Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

An energetic and forceful Fred Thompson sat down with me last week on "Kudlow and Company" to talk politics and the economy. The former Tennessee senator was in good form -- more animated than I've seen him and definitely a different person than the one I interviewed six months ago.

I asked him about Dick Armey, the former Republican House majority leader. Armey recently predicted that Hillary Clinton will be the next president, reasoning that the GOP has departed from the first principles of limited government and lower taxes. Armey said budget overspending and the proliferating corruption of earmarks are what led to the landslide defeat of Republicans a year ago. To date, Dick Armey is unimpressed with the circa 2007 GOP message.

And Thompson agreed. He said, "If we don't tend to business we are going to be in big trouble. Pendulum's swinging against us. We are down in the polls. Independents are leaning the other way (where they) used to lean with us. So we've got to ... adhere to the principles that made us a great party and a great nation."

That was a strong dose of honesty and self-examination. Good for Fred Thompson.

Speaking of limited government and budget overspending, I asked if a President Thompson would veto the $300 billion earmark-pocked pork-barrel farm bill now before Congress. He called this legislation "disgraceful," and noted that it wouldn't even help small family farms and that it would block the expansion of world free trade.

When I asked him about Warren Buffett, the famous investor billionaire, Thompson turned up the heat. In testimony before the Senate last week, Buffett advocated a whole series of tax hikes, such as an increase in the death tax, higher capital gains and dividend taxes, and more taxes on private partnerships, hedge funds and private-equity buyout firms.

Thompson labeled this policy dead wrong. He said Buffett is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the Democratic Party. He argued that the wealth of the government is not the same thing as the wealth of nations and that history proves lower tax rates promote economic growth.

And he said Hillary Clinton and the other Democratic candidates are blind to all this. He noted that the top 5 percent of income earners now pay 60 percent of all tax collections; that the tax code is progressive enough; that there's plenty of economic mobility in the country; that for those who have fallen behind, the problem is poor education, not tax rates; and that America is the freest, most prosperous, most powerful nation in the history of the world.

We talked about his controversial Social Security reform plan, which would slow down future benefits by indexing them to inflation rather than wages, while providing for add-on private savings accounts with a government match, Lower benefits? Isn't that the proverbial third rail of politics? Not according to Thompson. He said big problems ought to be tackled: "If you can't do the right thing, say what you believe and what everybody really basically knows, why do it? Why bother? Life is too short for the aggravation."

Thompson wants to tell the truth about Social Security and force everyone else in the game to respond. This issue is a real character-building definer for Fred Thompson. No one else on the campaign trail, in either party, is willing to discuss Social Security in such frank terms.

But that's the revitalized Fred Thompson. The more I challenged him, the more animated he became. He simply refused to stand down.

Some people say Thompson doesn't have the fire in his belly to go the distance. I don't think that's true. And I'm not picking or endorsing any candidates here. But Thompson has an honest, clear, straightforward message of economic freedom and problem solving.

Then I brought up the CNBC-Wall Street Journal debate of a few weeks ago, when Thompson slammed Rudy Giuliani. I asked if he intended to continue to pound Giuliani on the campaign trail. He said, "I haven't pounded all day." And yesterday? He replied: "Well, we're pointing out some policy differences. (Giuliani) believes in federal funding for abortion. He went to court to stop our bill outlawing sanctuary cities. He's never met a gun-control bill he didn't like."

A sharp-edged Fred Thompson.

Can he win? His campaign strategists told me they are pouring tons of money into Iowa advertising. They see a strong opportunity for a Thompson surge in the state, undermining Romney and inflicting damage on Giuliani. Walking off the set, Thompson told me this election will be about peace and prosperity. And he intends to fight hard.

Fred and the BgMick pledge
Saw Fred's ad on Border Security, so he seems to meet pledge 2. "DEFEND our Southern Border against the Reconquistas."
If Kudlow is speaking Truth Fred MAY meet pledge 4. "REDUCE the size of the FedGov 3% each year of Admin. in real absolute terms, not mere slowed growth.

So where is Fred on Pledge 1."WIN the War against the Sandnazis on ALL Fronts."
How about Pledge 3. "RESTORE Constitutionalism by appointing ONLY Strict Constructionist Justices from a consensus list of the Top 10 Most Strict Constructionist."
How about the recently added Pledge 5. "PROTECT my Sacred Franchise by establishing an Iron Clad, Fraud Proof Voter Registration, ID, and Polling System.

WIN, DEFEND, RESTORE, REDUCE, PROTECT. All or nothing, no equivocations, in public and in writing. OR I vote for Hillbama in the confident expectation they will shove the Republic the last inches into Socialism and in the HOPE THAT will finally bring on American Revolution Part3.

the big mick

FDT
I support what Fred has written here at TH. He seemed to have disappeared from public view and caused me to doubt his desire to actually run.

This column has given me hope that he is 'for real'. He's got my vote if he is still in the primaries when I get a chane to vote.

You gotta get back to Tennessee Fred
"Tennessee Fred" is an overhyped dud who fizzled on impact. Bit he would free trade us into oblivion for his rich buddies in the Council on Foreign Relations if he gets the chance to actually become president. It is time to turn to an America first candidate rather than the now tired globalist agenda candidates representing the elite. Furthering their ambitions to make money at all costs to American sovereignty and to the American people is just so Hollywood and so typically Fred. If he wants influence, he should go back to lobbying for Planned Parenthood. Its his lack of values, stupid.

Fred has to make a move...
...to win a voter like myself back. I was a Fredhead, but his underwhelming speeches, and commitment to Federalism, even if it comes at the exception of justice, disturbs me. As such, I've become much more interested in both Romney and Huckabee.

If the nominee, I'd definitely vote for Fred, but at this point I'm disinclined to think he represents the best person for advancing the social conservatism I desire.

Sgt Relic
As you say, all or none is just silly. The rub comes as to where does one draw the line. At some point the GOP candidate, say its Rudy, has to convince me he is a big enough distance from the DEMs to make me vote for him instead of going the BigMick route, voting fringe, and hoping for impeachment, revolution or major longtime antagonism towards the Dems that screwed up.

CFR
That REALLY bothers me. As far as the " Global Economy " America is routinly given the shaft. Free Trade has really screwd us and there is an obvious bias against the U.S. by other countries. The result makes it nearly if not entirely impossible to compete. It becomes like comparing apples to oranges. The problem lies in the fact that our leaders seem to think there is nothing wrong here.

That being said he was okay with Steffonapolis this Sunday. Now I hate to be non-PC, but bear with me, as I must: Someone should have been kind enough to give Fred the advice to get a little plastic surgery on those bags under his eyes. They make him look SO TIRED. I don't mean to say looks are everything, but they are SOMETHING.

Only conservatives need apply

Well, I'm waiting Fred. I need some courageous lies if you want to convince me.

Right now, Fred, I'm stuck on Romney and Hunter or is that Hunter and Romney.

Com'on Fred, Fess up, do you or don't you and how badly. I need some good, intelligent lying to get this old man turned around.

Screw.. them all..

Now Fred, ol'boy.........

.......and I do mean old as in old. Do you really want to duke it out with that alley cat from Chicago.??. Do you really want to get up early and go to bed late everyday for at least four years.??.

How bad do you want to lie to us and who are your owners.??. Besides that young vivacious wife of yours, I mean.

Just think Fred, you can go back to Tennessee and just shoot pool or lay out by the pool and drink or cuss and no one will care to report it. You can hang out with whomever you wish and say any dastardly thing at all, if you aren't president.

Are you really, really sure you want it because I wouldn't, and I don't think you do either. No I've heard that your wife wants to be first lady. Tell her to take a hike. Tell her there's only so many hours in a day and she needn't expect you to keep it up for ever and a day. Keep up the preamble that you're the best man in the world and the most powerful. Explain to her that if you were so privileged by the citizens of the USA as to become president that you would only have about thirty minutes a day for attention of all kinds to her.

Com'on Fred, now you know that is not a good package for any man, honest or dishonest, a word you surely understand better than most even if you don't use it often.

Onceamarine I think...
you are right about Fred. I am with you on Hunter, not too sure about Romney yet!

Happy Thanksgiving to you way down south of the border! It is raining leaves today here at my house and is COLD!

Anyone but Hillary!
I prefer a real conservative (maybe Fred could be that) but I definitely don't want Hillary. Eight years of Clinton 1 was enough drama and scandal. Our country doesn't need HRC to furhter drag us into the soap opera, "As the Socialist Purrs."

Christmas wish
That Duncan Hunter, Fred Thompson, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, and Tom Tancredo would pow-wow and draw straws or something for ONE of them to stay on and the rest drop out. This is the only way one of those best conservatives is going to get a chance to beat the Romney, Gulliani, McCain bunch of misfits. Romney maybe excluded.
Say what you will about any of them. They all have good points and bad. I just don't want any more of Bush, Nixon, Ford, Dole style republicanisms in the White House.
The splitting of the conservative vote just about assures us of getting another Rockerfeller Republican as the nominee. I sure hope not.

Christmas
Fred will not have a campaign by Christmas unless he discovers IA and actually campaigns instead of meandering around the country doing a few talk shows, writing white papers that nobody reads (except die hard Fredheads)and maybe raising a few funds which so far he has not been spending on things that will get him any votes.

Big Gov
I would take Huck off of you list of conservatives. I have seen enough of his past and current ideas on immigration, taxes (the UNfair tax), and corruption to know this guy is a Republican version of Bill Clinton without Monica.

Romney has changed some positions but at least he was smart enough to get on the right side of immigration and the UNfair tax. Further, he has no ethics violations that I know of. Huck claims the corruption charges are all partisan politics. I would note: there are more Dems in MA than in AR. The Huck gave the Dems the corruption gun to shoot him with.

BG
You should read the immigration position paper. It's right on target.

You are right about Huckabee, he has also come out with a new immigration position, which sounds good, but is full of holes. The big difference is that Huckabee means no amnesty the same way W. meant no amnesty.

Fred has a great message
he's suffered from some previous staff ineptitude and an unwillingness to shout his message from the rooftops.

I've always liked what he had to say, he just needs to turn up the volume, a lot.

There's always room for..Conservatism.

Fire in the Belly
Sorry Larry,

Fred's fire is too often a smoldering smoke. He's a good guy, but time has passed him by.

In the 90's he was quick and articulate. That was the era for him to run for Presdient, not now.

One day to the next
the positions change for other candidates, and I don't trust any of them, except Fred. Slow and steady is fine with me, like the rumbling of thunder getting louder as it gets closer.

Too many of you are reading and watching MSM (which includes FOX) that clearly are reluctant to show anything Fred, or like the Iraq war, anything positive. As Kudlow has written, before he met with Fred he was a bit skeptical; now he sees the hope that we supporters of Fred see in him. I see way too many clouds over any other candidate, either Dem or Rep, way too many faulty positions one way or another, and too much pandering to any singular group to trust any of them. In this pivotal moment in USA history, we need a candidate who will stick by his guns, and there is really only one candidate for that, Fred Thompson. The tortoise did beat the rabbit, after all.

Fred
Fred has got plenty of fire in his belly - just look at his career. He helped bring down a crooked Tennessee Governor, he helped bring down a crooked President, he built a sucessful law practice, he built a sucessiful acting career, and he was elected to the United States Senate. He is also aways tring to improve himself, and he speaks his mind.
The author is right. Other politicians steer clear of Soccial Security Reform, but Fred jumps right in. When the election is over, we will know exactly where Fred stands. As for the other canadiates, we may never know.

What!???
The wealth of the government!??

What wealth! The government has no money of its own, no assets of its own and it produces absolutely nothing! The only "wealth" that the government possesses is what it can forcefully take from those that DO produce under threat of imprisonment.

Wealth of the government indeed!

Give me a f--in break!

Walter
We will know where the other candidates (at least the one who wins) stand on the issues because they will then attempt to carry out their positions. Unfortunately their posistions will likely be different from what we heard during the campaign!

Good ol' Buffet
He says that the death tax has to be higher while he just gave a huge amount of his wealth to a foundation so that no death taxes (or even capital gains taxes) will be due. So until I see him put his taxes where his mouth is I will discount anything he says regarding my taxes!
