Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey anointed him presidential heir-apparent on "Larry King Live." Three-thousand adoring fans clung to his every word in New Hampshire. His new book sits atop the New York Times bestseller list. Over on "Monday Night Football," he announced, after "a good deal of soul-searching," that he is ready (wink-wink) . . . "for the Bears to go all the way!" (How's that for free advertising?)

Barack Obama is on a big-time roll.

In a Washington minute, the Democratic senator from Illinois has the media saying, "Hillary Clinton who?" But every honeymoon must come to an end, and I can think of a few reasons why Wall Street might want these nuptials annulled fast.

Last Sunday, while stumping -- er, speaking -- in New Hampshire, the young senator delivered an interesting line. Attempting to explain his sudden rock-star ascendancy to the pantheon of presidential hopefuls, Obama said voters wanted a new vision: "It's a spirit that says we are looking for something different -- we want something new."

Trouble is, there's nothing "new" or "different" about Barack Obama. Behind that charm and charisma -- a media-entrancing appeal worthy of Bill Clinton -- is an extremely liberal-left politician.

Just look at his record.

Obama voted against the Bush tax cuts on capital gains and dividends, justifying his anti-growth stance with the old class-warfare saw about tax cuts for the rich. Of course, these are the very same tax cuts that spurred economic expansion, created record job growth and reduced the deficit, as revenues flooded the Treasury.

The young senator also voted against repealing the death tax. He dismissed it as a "Paris Hilton tax break" that would give "billions of dollars to billionaire heirs and heiresses." Try telling that to the owners of farms, ranches and small businesses who are forced to sell their legacies because of this tax.

He swings a nice protectionist bat, too. He has voted against free trade (CAFTA) and U.S. energy independence (drilling in ANWR), and has opposed lifting a $0.54 per gallon tariff on Brazilian ethanol. "Ethanol imports are neither necessary nor a practical response to current gasoline prices," he claimed. Nonsense.

He's also strongly opposed to personal retirement accounts for Social Security reform and prefers instead that the government steward your money. As Amanda Carpenter wrote in Human Events, "When speaking out against various tax cuts, Obama has likened the 'Ownership Society' -- which entails such things as personalized Social Security accounts, health savings accounts and school choice -- to 'social Darwinism.'"

The George W. Bush way has been to work toward ending the multiple-taxation of savings and investment -- to lower taxes and put the people's money back in the people's wallets. It's all about capital. Simply put, the economy can't grow without capital to fertilize the soil of new technologies, jobs and businesses. But Obama scoffs at such notions.

The senator is liberal to the core. He voted against Supreme Court Justices Sam Alito and John Roberts. (Even liberal Sens. Russ Feingold and Pat Leahy voted for Roberts.) He said no to Patriot Act wiretap extensions, despite their proven effectiveness in halting terrorist attacks over the past five years. He collaborated in blocking John Bolton's appointment to the United Nations. He earned a perfect 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America. He voted against a ban on partial-birth abortions twice as a state senator. He opposed the Defense of Marriage Act and stood against the Federal Marriage Amendment, despite acknowledging his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Let's remember that Democrats won their congressional majority by doing their best impersonation of Republicans. In securing their November sweep, the Democrats captured a huge margin of independent Ross Perot voters -- fiscal conservatives who favor balanced budgets, an end to deficit spending and strong national security. Obama fails these independents on each account.

Do Democrats really want Obama to take them on a U-turn back to the left?

If the Democrats really want to embrace a rising star, they need look no further than Harold Ford, the young African American congressman from Tennessee who nearly captured a Senate seat last month. Ford appreciates free markets and capitalism. He has boldly crossed party lines to vote to extend the investor tax cuts and expand tax-free savings accounts. He avoids class-warfare platitudes and embraces the Ownership Society. He's optimistic -- Reaganesque. And his pro-growth vision stands in stark contrast to Obama's nanny-state predilection.

The good news for Obama is that there are about 700 days until Election Day 2008. If he decides to seek the Democratic nomination, he has time to change his message -- perhaps after a few chats with Harold Ford.

Gee go figure
a libdolt politician against SS reform, tax cuts, is a unionist, and probably anti-military but is too smart to say that...yet.

Republicans are fiscal conservatives??
Republicans are fiscal conservatives and they like a balanced budget? You could have fooled me. The truth is no one party can claim fiscal conservatism when neither has been fiscally restrained. Bill Clinton did balance the budget, albeit with a republican congress.

It's funny when neocons claim such moral high ground on every issue affecting our country, but refuse to take a serious look at alternative source of energy. Not one neocon has called for fuel efficient cars out of the big three, yet we are told that you like to conserve. I know, you want to drill in ANWR, but what if all that is said of green house gases are true? What if it really does have an adverse effect to our health and the earth? I am not proclaiming to be a know it all, but it is prudent to ask those questions now. It is only a conservative thing to do – and I am a liberal.

I don't care about a lot of the simple minded diatribe of yours - except the partial birth abortion deal. That not withstanding however, I will vote for him for president. You did vote for dubya after all.

Donaldd
It takes more energy to produce ethanol than the ethanol produces. The reason there is a $0.54 tarrif on ethanol imports is to artificially inflate ethanol prices and get votes from grain producing states. Wouldn't it be better for the working man to have cheaper fuel to get to and from work?

Obviously you weren't reading news papers or were spending too much time watching cartoons when the government shutdowns during the Clinton administration occurred. The republicans were blamed for the shutdowns.

Harold Ford is
not only a better choice because of his stand on issues, he's waaaaay better looking than Barack. Ah, well, isn't this what Barack's popularity is all about? Hmmmmmm?

"and probably anti-military but is too smart to say that...yet."

He just hasn't spoken to the right crowd yet.

But that speech!
He gave that really great speech at the convention!
Don't you remember that? He's wonderful.
BULL!

You're right. He'll be yammering before Code Pink before too long.

No, we will not achieve energy independence by importing ethanol although it is much, much cheaper than foreign crude, especially if we remove the protective tarif. Do you remember recently when there was a shortage of domestic ethanol to add to gasoline causing the price of gasoline at the pumps to rise? We are searching for a sufficient quantity of ethanol to meet government standards and if like crude oil we can't produce enough supply we must import to meet demand.

Also, while importing ethanol does not make us independent, neither does prohibiting drilling for new sources.

It's the Charisma Stupid
The change Americans are yammering for is charisma and, like it or not, it has been painfully absent for about 6 years.

In the marketing of candidates style almost always trumps substance (Bill Clinton anyone?)and this dude has boatloads.

The only reason this star is shing so brightly is that he is being compared to the others. If charismas the thing, he wins.

FrankB

"He reaches across the aisle"
I have heard, a number of times, that he is a positive voice in politics and that he "reaches across the aisles". When has he reached across the aisles? He's left of center on everything. The only time he reaches across the aisle is when he's shaking hands with those on the right are moving left towards his positions, like immigration.

Also, so far as the shut downs back during Clinton, those happened when Clinton wanted more than the republicans would give him, NOT when Clinton wanted less than the republicans proposed. Clinton was trying to force republicans to increase certain parts of the budget.

Obama is the poster boy
for 21st century socialism.

He'll be Hillary's steppin' fetchit guy. That's a given. Hillary/Obama in '08. Yuck.

The question is: Where is the Republican champion who should be saddling up right now to come riding in on a white charger to save us from the evils of the socialist-democrats?

Beware the Swoon Factor; The Obama Drama
I'm sure you've all been hearing and seeing all the hoopla related to the latest Democratic "Rockstar"(yes, I've heard reporters, liberal mind you, using this term) Barack Obama. It's what I call the "Swoon Factor", just like Clinton before him, a virtual nobody in politics, save for a couple of years in the senate? This site has a terrific breakdown of where he stands on the issues:

http://www.ontheissues.org/Barack_Obama.htm

But aside from all this politics, which is more important than any of the rest of it, Obama has "it". The factor that helped catapult Clinton to unbeleivable rockstar status, all the while engaging in behavior that was to be his downfall. To recap the Clinton rap:

What the Left never seem to get about Clinton and his Lewinsky behavior were 2 things:

1) You don't have sex in the workplace, people get fired for that behavior. You especially don't have sex in the workplace while speaking to another President of the United States and in the Oval Office.

2) When you're caught, you don't lie under oath

I didn't care if Clinton wanted to have a 1000 affairs, that's his business. But if his workplace is an office for which I am one of the millions of "bosses" and it's in "my office" - in the words of Donald Trump - "You're Fired". The Hellary fallout is all on him, I don't care. But then to make the matter worse he LIED about it under oath. If you can't understand either of these points there's nothing else that could be said to you to make you understand.

Which brings me to BO - (does it stink yet? we're about to find out in '08).

What excused Clinton's behavior WAS his rockstar status. In the face of his completely inappropriate behavior he still had a high approval rating from....the "bobbysoxers" (if you understand who the bobbysoxers are then you get the swoon factor).

Unbelievable.

They excused his cheating on his wife. They excused his disrespect for the Presidency. They excused his disrespect for the Offic of the White House. They excused his disrespect for our courts and his profession by lying under oath.

We should have learned from that experience that "Rockstars" are fun but at the end of the day we want someone who is serious in politics and not using their histrionics in the guise of sexuality to entice voters, sway opinioin and make the women AND men swoon. I could swear that Dan Rather was trying to flirt with Clinton. But I digress.

Keep a watchful eye. You heard it hear that the BO Swoon Machine is in motion and will do their best to create puff pieces, shrewd appearances, and an aura of being untouchable. All of which are the leading indicators you DON'T want when it comes to the serious issues our nation faces and voting someone into that prestigious office.

"We have serious issues that need serious solutions and your 15 minutes are up"
Michael Douglas, An American President

The word Liberal by Definition
Liberal (literal definition):

"favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties."

"favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
(often initial capital letter) noting
free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant"

"open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc."

"Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded."

Ok so then Mr. Kudlow goes on to say about Mr. Obama:

"Trouble is, there's nothing "new" or "different" about Barack Obama. Behind that charm and charisma, a media-entrancing appeal worthy of Bill Clinton,is an extremely liberal-left politician. Just look at his record."

So therefore according to Mr. Kudlow and conservative republicans that think like him the word "liberal" obviously has a definition that doesnt correlate at all with the generally positive definitions of the word in your average dictionary. In other words they have twisted the word "liberal" into being something negatively abhorent, especially in a politician. In other words the word is a "slur" on a up and coming politician like Mr. Obama, meant to defame him as his popularity rises. Repubs and their dirty tricks operatives are already looking for ways to bring him down.

Obama's America = Africa's Mugabe
Want to see a future America with Obama, then just look at Africa with Pres. Mugabe. Under Mugabe, Zimbabwe has been reduced from agriculturally independent to famine. Civil society has been broken down. Like Lebanon, no functional government exists, only the authority of "strongman" Mugabe.

If America is really in decline as Mel Gibson has suggested in his recent movie, then we could elect leaders who would take us into the darkness and turmoil of Africa.

You can bet Obama will be sold to democratic voters only on his personality. Watch him avoid any serious discussion of issues. A close look at his voting record would indicate the kind of politician voters would otherwise avoid. He will be electable as President only if he is more deceptive than Hillary.

Left Angle
Your definition may be correct, but in today's politics Liberal has come to stand for those that wish to change the foundations of our nation by imposing other forms of government that are not in alignment with Democracy.

The many government programs are a great example. The unwillingness to turn over Social Security, for example, to the individual taxpayer by which each person can choose his/her future by investing, is irresponsible. Yet, it was not endorsed by liberals. Under your definition shouldn't they have?

There are other topics I'm sure that we could debate in terms of the responsibility factor of Democrat Liberals. But my first paragraph really gets to the heart of the matter.

re: ethanol subsidies and "liberal"
First of all, sugar is not economically grown in the US. Subsidies to sugar farmers and refineries and tons of pesticides are required to keep domestic sugar production going.

Ethanol production in the US is heavily subsidized also. Because sugar is so economical in Brazil, producing ethanol from sugar production by-products is also extremely economical. To protect American "farm" ethanol producers (mainly large corporate interests like Archer Daniels Midland, a major contributor to BOTH parties), steep import duties are placed on Brazilian ethanol.

The US government decided to move up by one year the planned phaseout of MTBE as a gasoline additive in favor of ethanol. In doing so, the change was made before the infrastructure was in place to support ethanol addition, causing supply & demand problems that forced the price of gasoline up. Reducing or ending the import duty on Brazilian ethanol would have helped defray some of the cost and resulted in cheaper reformulated gasoline. So basically, money was taken from the taxpayers so that they could pay more for gasoline. Thanks, government.

As to the dictionary definition of liberal, that's not what the American political definition is; however, it IS why you'll hear many libertarian-minded people refer to themselves as "classical liberals" -- we are in favor of free market economics and individual liberty.

Geronimo
I suspect that you are close to the mark on that one.

Look how fast Zimbabwan's jumped on Mugabe's land reform deals. Take from Whitey at gunpoint and redistribute it.

Nice fat handout right?

Only one problem, they either did not want to work the land or did not know how. Guess what?

Famine came to town.

Count on Osama promising the world to the core liberal voters through the joys of Socialism.

Why is this guy so loved by liberals?
He's only spent 2 years in the Senate, and he is emerging as the Democrat frontrunner for the libs. Is it because we've badly beaten all their usual players, so its time for a new face of socialism in America? I can't imagine America voting for someone with the experience he's missing, but then again, I am never surprised at what ridiculous things liberals will do.

poweredbyreagan.com

Mugabe? puh-leeze!
I guess everyone's entitled to his own truthiness.

Re: Ethanol
The major corporations in agribusiness are allowing farmer owned cooperatives to build up an infrastructure of corn based dry ethanol plants. When most of them are operational, these same well connected corporations will then import Brazilian ethanol through the Central American Free Trade Treaty, and wipe out the small producers. Once that happens, they will buy the coop ethanol plants for a few cents on the dollar and then crank up the prices and subsidies for ethanol. Thank God for the Free Enterprise System and Free Trade! For those of you who doubt this scenario, Cargill has already established a molecular sieve plant in El Salvador to do the dirty deed. The Minnesota Corn Growers are upset, but how much money do they give to the Republican Establishment?

Obama has charisma???
You must be kidding or drunk. Just by looking at him, I can easily tell that those who proclaim that the guy has charisma must be drunk or plainly stupid.

The liberal media are trying picture him as charismatic and charming.

Yeah, and some conservatives pundits buy that without thinking.

Honestly, can you see charisma in this guy?

Gee, the US president?

Reagan must be laughing at his grave.

Not to worry about Obama.
As my father used to say about trendy things: 'They have the shelf life of a f^rt in a skillet'.

Wait until the Clinton machine goes after him for raining on Hillary's annointment.

scooternyc: That is YOUR definition
thats exactly what I was saying. Repubs/Cons have twisted the word "liberal" into meaning something that it doesnt. Only in the minds of
those people does the word have a negative connotation. That's exactly why when repubs/cons attempt to label a democrat as a "liberal" we look at you like youre crazy.

btw: that strategy doesnt work any more.

Left Angle is dillusional
if he thinks the term 'liberal' does not emote a negative image. Otherwise you would see dem politicians(outside of safe bastions) proudly proclaim their liberalism. Instead they hide behind the label 'progressives' or they disguise themselves with conservative campaigns (ala 2006).

No, liberals are wise to avoid or obscure that moniker.

accept reality: youre correct..
the label "liberal" does have a negative connotation because repubs/cons have twisted the definition of the word to mean something other than how it is literaly definined...in other words look the word up in the dictionary and then compare it with YOUR repub/con definition.

L.Angle=Rt.: Most Dem's aren't liberal!
It strikes me that we've largely had a reversal in which party is liberal in the classic senses that Left Angle wants to use. For example(s), under his/her definition, one would expect true liberals to be in favor of free trade, opposed to intrusive government, and hostile to the dogmas of political correctness. (One also senses that many a Democrat yearns for the class solidarity of the 1930's. Tell me again who's progressive and who's recidivist?) And it isn't typically Republicans who shout down campus speakers they don't approve of. Perhaps in one of his/her later posts, Left Angle is admitting as much when he/she says, "That's exactly why when repubs/cons attempt to label a democrat as a 'liberal' we look at you like youre crazy."
