Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Henry Louis Gates Jr., director of Harvard University's W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research, retained a lawyer. Why? He claims cops in Cambridge, Mass., racially profiled him.

Here's what happened.

Gates, "one of the nation's pre-eminent African-American scholars," writes The Boston Globe, was arrested about 1 p.m. at his home near Harvard Square by Cambridge police investigating a possible break-in. "The incident," says the Globe, "raised concerns among some Harvard faculty that Gates was a victim of racial profiling."

"Friends of Gates," writes the Globe, "said he was already in his home when police arrived. He showed his driver's license and Harvard identification card, but was handcuffed and taken into police custody for several hours." The Globe posted redacted arrest reports on its Web site. But for reasons unknown, the Globe removed them less than a day later.

The Cambridge Chronicle, however, still posts the reports on its Web site. The Chronicle's article also mentions a few things the Globe omitted -- including that "during the incident, Gates accused Cambridge police officers of racism."

The Chronicle writes: "A witness had called police when she saw a black man, apparently Gates, wedging his shoulder into the door, trying to gain entry, according to the arrest report. ...

"In the arrest report, police said Gates initially refused to step onto his porch when approached by (Cambridge Police Sgt. James) Crowley. He then allegedly opened his door and shouted, 'Why, because I'm a black man in America?'

"As Crowley continued to question Gates, the Harvard professor allegedly told him, 'You don't know who you're messing with.' When Crowley asked to speak with him outside, Gates allegedly said, 'Ya, I'll speak with your momma outside.'"

Crowley says he responded to a call of a possible break-in by a woman on the sidewalk, who said she'd seen a black male "wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying to force entry." Crowley reported he "could see an older black male standing in the foyer." He continued: "As I stood in plain view of this man, later identified as Gates, I asked if he would step out onto the porch and speak with me. He replied 'no, I will not.' He then demanded to know who I was. I told him that I was 'Sgt. Crowley from the Cambridge Police' and that I was 'investigating a report of a break in progress' at the residence. While I was making this statement, Gates opened the front door and exclaimed 'why, because I'm a black man in America?' I then asked Gates if there was anyone else in the residence. While yelling, he told me that it was none of my business and accused me of being a racist police officer."

Crowley's report, as well as that of another responding officer, describe Gates yelling repeated accusations of racism while asserting that the officer "had no idea who (he) was 'messing' with" and that the officer "had not heard the last of it."

After initially refusing to produce any identification confirming his residence, Gates finally supplied a Harvard ID. By that time, a crowd of officers and passers-by was outside. In front of the house and "in view of the public," Crowley states he twice warned Gates that he was becoming disorderly. But Gates' yelling and "tumultuous behavior" continued, causing "surprise and alarm" in the citizenry outside. Crowley then placed Gates under arrest.

Crowley "asked Gates if he would like an officer to take possession of his house key and secure his front door, which he left wide open." Gates said "the door was unsecurable due to a previous break attempt at the residence." (Emphasis added.)

OK, the cops overreacted. Cops' training involves dealing with verbally abusive citizens. They could have walked away, written a report and allowed the prosecutor to determine whether to file charges. But Gates overreacted, too.

Last week, about 2 p.m., while driving a nice car, I got stopped by a police officer about a block from my home in Los Angeles. The officer asked for license and registration. "Yes, sir," I said, handing him my license. Before I could retrieve the registration, he said, "Mr. Elder, do you still live at this address?" I said I did. He said: "OK. I stopped you because you rolled through a stop sign. Two pedestrians saw you, and they gestured to me, as if saying, 'Are you going to do something about that?' So I felt I had to stop you. I'm not looking for area residents. I'm looking for people who don't live here who might be committing crimes. You're fine."

I did roll through the stop sign. He could have ticketed me. Rather, he responded to my politeness with politeness. Besides, don't we want a proactive police department that, within the law, doesn't just react to crime but also tries to prevent it?

Cops routinely deal with conflict, angry citizens and quite often the worst of the worst -- while going to work every day willing to take a bullet for someone they don't even know.

Even Henry You-Don't-Know-Who-You're-Messing-With Gates should understand that.

Cops are human beings, too.

Why Mr. Gates was arrested?
Have you ever been confronted by a dog that doesn't know you? If you have I'm sure you noticed that as long as you faced the dog and did not back down the dog barked but did not approach but as soon as you turned your back all of a sudden he got brave and approached.
Mr. Gates was at his door, meaning the Police were outside. Maybe leaving?
Read the report. It's on the Internet. Mr. gates did not contest the content, he just said it was a racially motivated.
I don't know if he ever said,"thanks for earning your pay by checking on the security of my home".
I don't mean to be picking on you but you may need to straighten your cap and your thinking.

Absolute Tragedy!!! Miles, Have you taken time to think that the Informant that sent the police to her address just may have been light black female, 5'8", short hair?
Goes to show, you can't trust everyone.

Respect and Innocent
Simple fact, Cop says jump, you say how High? After you jump you say WHY?!

Another sign of an uncivilized society
I have been saying for years now, that police get up everyday and strap armor on their chests to protect us. they put themselves between the scum of the earth and all of us for little pay, disproportionate scrutiny and most importantly, diminishing respect. they are unfairly characterized in the news and fictional media as abusive thugs who seek out blacks and latinos to arrest for no reason; just for the fun of it. well i personally know many police officers, highway patrolmen and sheriffs deputies. each and every one of them would enter the fire to save any person in danger from an old, rich, white male to a young, poor, black woman. AND EVERYONE IN BETWEEN. educated adults have a powerful responsibility to teach the young that police officers are on the streets to protect us. their job doesn't give them the ability to read minds, see behind them or predict the state of mind of a person before they encounter them. police officers arrive on the scene with no information except what is reported. it is their job to investigate and keep everyone calm. if a person, especially one who is innocent, as gates purported himself to be, acts irrationally, tumultuously or otherwise "disorderly" they are getting arrested, (or STOPPED) until the officer can get all the facts. this is the power we entrust the officers with. if an adult, like gates, can't comprehend this, what on earth is he doing teaching college level courses?

White not black in America...
From everything I've heard and my own experience being stopped by police, whether black or white American citizen, can be a troublesmoe ordeal. What's more, I'm sure that minority people get it more often, but in either case people must go by the police actions--especially if he/she is not belligerent. I'll bet many can attest to Larry's situation where the police were very friendly and respectful...but he opposite is true too, so one doesn't need, for his/her own benefit, to make a bad situation {the stop} worse by getting so upset! All people have had good and bad experiences with the police, but do you ever bad mouth them when they assist or save you from a criminal? Simple.

gates didnt break any laws
yelling at a police officer is not breaking any laws, thats why they dropped charges...GATES had a right to scream and yell on his on front porch if he thought he was being trated unfairly...its not like the police dont have a history of racism..something you racists on TOWNHALL conveniently forget..but knowing y'all , y'all will just blame police brutality on blacks..lol

I rolled one too
I am a married white woman living in a town that has been known for problems with police pulling over blacks because "they don't belong". Well that's bologna!!!! I also was pulled over for rolling a stop sign. I even live in the neighborhood and still got a ticket. I paid $150 and have this on my record. All I can say is...you break the law you pay for it!!!! Black, white, green or yellow!!!
Mr. Elder is a man who understands life and what it means to take up your own cross.
Thanks for being such a great American!!!!!

Racism?
Their is no law against a private citizen being stupid, ungrateful, or racist. If the officer had immediately handcuffed the citizen in order to ascertain who he was, then I woudl have no issue. The police offier's restrain was admirable. Heperformed very professionaly, in my opinion, until the point where he arrested the professor. He should have diffused the situation by leaving instead of escalating. - But the police officers I've run into would have arrested me much earlier in this situation - and I am not a classical minority. If I make the mistake of criticizing a police officer, I know I'll be arrested. - So despite the ungrateful, ignorant, and yes racist behavior of the private citizen, I believe the officer made a mistake by arresting him at the end - despite how much he must have felt abused for only trying to do his job. There was no racism displayed on the part of the police officer. If we want to discuss the relationship between private citizen(s) and police officers, then Bravo. But the only racist in this scenario was the private citizen.
By the way, when am I going to have the privilege of listening, once again, to the sage from South Central on the airwaves of NJ?

Larry's Right...as usual!
Another great column Larry, thoughtful & concise.you were right on the money with your analysis, these are the kinds of topics we were lucky enough to hear you talk about here in LA for 15 years...as always you enlighten & entertain us. keep 'em coming & for god's sake will someone wise up & get the "sage from south central" back on to the airwaves where he belongs before my head explodes from all the pitiful excuses is see & hear covering these stories?? larry you rock...

Stupid Gates, Race Hustler
Gates just wanted attention and seized a perfect oppening. He's just like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and their ilk. Race hustlers. They are stupid and don't have anything else to offer, so they yell racism every chance they get. He'll get his 15 minutes of fame. If there's a lawsuit, it should be thrown out. Don't waste more taxpayer money on such as this. I'M SICK OF IT! Political correctness has ruined this country. Destroyed education. We should not be confronted with this tripe on a weekly basis...some joker of a black LEADER hustling for a buck because he's too stupid to do anything legitimate. Whites didn't do anything to blacks that they haven't already done to themselves. They've destroyed themselves. White guilt is just ridiculous!

Bigotry thy name is Miles
I say, gates should sue---what will happen is the ranting angry elitist arrogant snob will be held to account in a court, while the calm, polite police officer (who turned on his radio to record the angry ranting racist) and the black and hispanic police officers there arresting Gates will be vindicated.

Since 1960 the entire American Legal, government and corporate systems have bent over backward to support and enable blacks in America. Routinely not firing complete incompetents who are black for fear of a law suit.

It is pathetic that in a system whereby a white person who is just doing his job is immediately accused of racism, white lacross players are immediately accused of rape, a white lawyer is knowingly and wrongfully accused of rape by Al Sharpton (Sharpton was found guilty)

But when someone asserts we should wait for more information they are accused of being racist and having racist grandparents and parents.

Bigotry thy name is Miles.

are blks allowed 2 complain about racism
according to the racists on here we're not...you want blacks to suffer silently and then when we dont, you accuse US of playing the race card....you learned well from your racist parents and grandparents...

the cop was stupid
thats why they dropped the charges..if they had anything on him they wouldnt have dropped the charges...the cops knew they were wrong

conservatives hated martin luther king
if KING was living right now republicans would hate him like they hate SHARPTON and JACKSON...LIMBAUGH ,y'alls hero would degrade and tell lies on him to make his white supremist audience happy..y'all would call him a communist and racist just like your parents and grandparents did.....conservatives have always been against rights for minorities...

cops are dirty
here in atlanta 2 white cops killed a 92 yr old black woman last year...then the white butchers tried to plant drugs on her... i guess you republicans have no problem with these kind of racist murderers...

to notmyprez
stop lying u raCIST...u wont hire blacks because u r a straight out raCIST...and u say OBAMA is not your president because hes black...i hate when u cowardly little peter white boys lie about your racism...i guess your family passed down their hatred of blacks to you...

if GATES was white
if GATES weas white he never would have been arrested..they dropped the charges because they knew they were wrong to arrest him...

Gates & New Hate Crimes Act
Hey Kids - There is a new hate crimes bill headed towards Obama's desk. Should Gates be worried?

A new Hate Crimes bill, the Mathew Shepard Act, was just passed and now awaits the president's certain signature. This new bill greatly expands federal authority to prosecute a broad variety of hate crimes. In fact, it expands federal authority so much that the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights actively opposed the bill.

Reading the Gates police report it sounds like Gates behaviour falls squarely under the newly passed bill.

Since Obama thinks Gates arrest was stupid what does he think of using the new hate crimes bill to go after somebody like Gates?

Any reporter brave enough to ask Obama.

I think most people know MLK was a minister. He is referred to as The Rev. King as well as Dr. King.

You will not find a single article from any major news paper or from the TV News that talk, or mention Dr King as a Christian.

Another point on the Democrat party is the switch on race attitudes changed after these times.
======================

No, they changed their language but are still the racist party they were that fought for slavery and Jim Crow Laws.

Republicans are still the party that oppose the racist democrats

It was bound to happen

For years we have heard feminists and blacks decrying the "white good ole boy" network in government.

Well, I guess Gates has made it official with his "you don't know who you're messing with" remark. We now have a "good ole black boy network". Headed up by no other than good ole boy Obama. Of course, I'm sure the black community is okay with that. It was the "good ole white boy" networks they found so offensive.

I can just hear Obama now defending these black racists by claiming "oh he's not so bad, he's just a "good ol black neck boy".

And Gates can even write a new book and entitled it "You might be a black neck if you teach black history at an east cost ivy league college." Probably be a best seller. :)

"You don't know who you're messing with"

Typical black activist liberal. On one side of his mouth he's decrying social injustice and reminding us that the constitution guarantees all men are created equal under the law. On the other side of his mouth, he is boasting "You don't know who you're messing with." Meaning of course, I'm special, I have friends in high places. I'm going to have your job, whitey.

What a hypocrite.

Larry you are a racist!!!
I think Man Vannity goes way to far in hero worshiping all police. But Larry this is BS and you know it. There is a fine line between throwing a temper tantrum and breaking the law. This clown of a so called professor by his actions was challenging the officer to arrest him, and he abliged. The fact that people get away with shooting their mouths off to other people free of any reprocussion is not a right. Personally I think the officer should have put his finger in Mr Gates chest and told him to shut his mouth, or he would be arrested.

Cops put up with enough of the "black communities" BS. The majority of black families want society to raise their kids for them which is exactly why they populate prisons in such high numbers.

QUIT using you skin color as a handicap!!!

"I didn't realize he was trying to discourage prostitution. My date did. She was furious, but kept her mouth shut. I was puzzled as to why she was so angry, and didn't figure it out until much later."

Nice to see that the black police immediately assume a black woman with a white guy must be a ho. Black-on-black racism/sexism there!

Bill Maher and Robert DeNiro better avoid that neighborhood.

Talent Scout
I think most people know MLK was a minister. He is referred to as The Rev. King as well as Dr. King.

Another point on the Democrat party is the switch on race attitudes changed after these times. Some came from Northern Democrats against racism like JFK. Most of that racism was from southern Democrats, who supported segregation. Many switched parties later on.

It would be rare to see a Republican president taking the lead on civil rights today as Eisenhower did in the school desegregation orders in the 1950s. Granted, today black people do not have the legal impediments to advancement that existed back then. Eisenhower also saw the effects of segregation in the army during the war and was against it. I have surprised many ultra-liberal people who are ignorant of Ike's involvement in civil rights. It was Truman, a Democrat, who desegregated the military, after all.

Things like this incident
I own a small company. No, let's say VERY small company. I have no employees at the present time, but at some point I hope to. I do have people work with me on an occasional basis, though, and have had a young black gentleman work for me a couple of weekends. He did a great job, my customers like him, and he was a pleasure to work with.
But when I see things like this incident, it makes me wonder if, just to protect myself, I should try to avoid hiring anyone that is black. It seems that it would just be inviting problems, hiring someone who could play the race card against me in any type of dispute over job assignment, promotion, firing, etc.
I don't believe black people are inherently bad people. I believe many have been turned bad by listening to Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the like. Why would I want to hire someone who might have the "victim" mentality?

King fought against Institutional Racism we all know as Jim Crow Law.
He did not fight the white race.

The reason Dr King was a Republican is because the Democrat Party were the ones that passed all those Jim Crow Laws against our black citizens.

The other thing people are ignorant of today, as in ignoring a truth about Dr King is he was a Christian.

Not only was he a Christian, he was a Minister, a Preacher, a Pastor who had applied CHRISTIAN Principles to his fight against Jim Crow, the Democrat Party and Institutional Racism passed into Law by Democrats

Absurd
Now you make an accusation at me from you being a racist.

Not only do you blame all whites for a crime by a white person, you also accuse complete strangers of supporting crimes, if done by a white, as if no white ever gets prosecuted for crimes.

You are the racist miles, as is Gates

HD's psych
Disorderly conduct covers a wide range of behaviors and can be handled with a summons. This is a common practice which is based on the officer’s discretion.
An elderly man who needs a cane to walk, who is unarmed, who is not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and has no record of any prior criminal activity is very unlikely to pose a threat to society. In the immediate sense, shouting may feel threatening but in of itself is not.
Yes, police are under great stress and are human like everyone else. I made this point earlier. However, they are also trained professionals and as such are held to a higher standard. That’s not fair, but that’s life. This is why it takes a special kind of person to be a police man.
And yes, like me, you did not wait until all the facts are in before you start criticized anyone. You have judged in favor of the officer based on your bias. That’s perfectly normal. We all act according to our bias. That is why I choose to error on the side of caution as I said earlier.
At 16 you are fully capable if grasping the injustice of life but you lack the perspective that only time can provide. For example, you acknowledge that the officer may have over reacted and that the police make mistakes. Your empathies may change over time, the more you see this happen.

miles
You do know that the Chief justice of the supreme court who helped to get the civil rights laws past was a prominent republican right?

Conservatives didn't hate MLK, unless you mean fringe elements which aren't conservatives but nuts. Also, the nation wasn't fully ready for MLK's ideas, so to suggest that only "conservatives" had an axe to grind with MLK is disingenuous to say the least.

"why didnt the cop leave as soon as GATES showed him his ID?as soon as he saw this he should have left"

What gives Gates the right to be verbally abusive to a police officer? I wish they would have tazered him!

Police have to treat everyone as if they are armed and dangerous. If I have to choose between my life and your feelings, your feelings lose. Sorry!

Quit being so selfish and put yourself in the cops shoes.

Gates may be a Harvard professor but he acted just like an inner city thug.

You cannot act like a dumb animal and expect to be treated like an intellectual.

Gates is lucky he was treated as he was and not tasered as soon as he became non-compliant.
Imagine the headlines if the police didn't investigate the call and Professor Gates' house was burglarized: "police don't respond to crimes against black people" or some similar variation. Professor Gates is just looking to make a headline

Gates and Obama
Had the shoe been on the other foot; Black police officers being ridiculed by a white guy while trying to do their jobs, the white guy would have definitely been labeled racist.

What Gates should have done was respectfully explain to the police officer who he is, and then thank the officer for helping keep his property secure. Of course, that wouldn't have made quite as good of headline, but that's how it should have played out, and probably how it normally plays out.

Regarding Obama's commentary on the matter: Clearly the president acted stupidly by remarking without knowing all the details.

This is as un-presidential as it gets.

Obama: The real hater comes out
Like the poster "The Unforgiven", I agree that Obama has revealed himself to be a racial hater.

Well, at least he has come out of the closet on this issue and has given us a little "transparency" on how he feels about white cops. Sorta like Sotomayor's comments on a "wise Latina woman" versus an old white guy.

Obama was raised in a very weird family, surrounded by communists, socialists, way-out liberals, possible drug-dealers, and people of suspect mental stability. Later he lived and studied with people who used drugs, attended marxist conferences, and who generally opposed the "establishment", but who took a lot of money from that establishment when it suited them. Terrorist Bill Ayers is one of them.

Just look at how much money Michele Obama got in her various jobs, esp. when Obie started to move up the ladder in politics.

Obama's Chicago friends and neighbors include(d) a leftist Rabbi (Wolf), two unrepentant terrorists (Dohrn and Ayers and their spawn), a race-baiter and hater/anti-semite, Rev. Louis Farrakhan, and a minister who was, like Farrakhan, a race-baiter and hater, anti-semite, pro-Castro supporter, and black theology/reparations activist.

It there anyone around Obama who is pro-American, level-headed, politically moderate, rational, and not delusional?

When you answer this one with a resounding "NO", you'll understand why Obama is the way he is, a racialist/marxist, Joe Stalin-in training.

If there was true tranparency in Obama and his administration, it would show that the emperor not only doesn't have any clothes, he also doesn't have any honesty, integrity, or rationality.

We've got a real live nightmare in Obama and it's destroying America, one institution (banks, Wall Street, auto industry, insurance industries, health industries, the military, education, immigration controls, and now, law enforcement).

white police murders 92 yr old blk woman

Tyler
A neighbor called and reported a robbery in progress. Three police officers responded (One Black, one white and one hispanic). The officers approached the 'broken door (from a previous break-in) and asked the inidividual who was in the house if he wuld step out onto the porch. At that point, the police didn't know if he was a thief, if he was armed or who he was.
The reports were written by the white and hispanic officers. They asked for identification repeatedly as the DISTINGUISHED Harvard Professor made references to the officer's mama, called him a racist and wouldn't calm down.
'Watch 'cops' just once, then question how people get arrested in their own home...like when their girlfriends is bleeding or their children have black eyes, OR major attitude. Fact is, the police often remove the 'attitude' because they know that as soon as they leave, the person who called 911 will probably be beat again. Oh, and these 'attitudes' are all colors.

Obama is a racist
The koolaid drinkers proclaim that Obama will bridge the racial gap and we will all sing kumbaya. What a friggin joke. He chose to surround himself during his formative years with a vile racist preacher, an unrepentent domestic terrorist and others of anarchist or socialist beliefs. This pretender to the throne will set back race relations decades. He admitted not having all of the facts en reference to the Gates arrest and then turns around and makes an inflammatory statement. He ia an ignoramous with horrible judgement.

MikeR
Please explain to me how :

1. Disorderly conduct doesn't warrant an arrest.

2. The police officers on the scene would have known " Gates does not pose a threat to society in himself ", given the way he was acting.

It seems to me like the police officers were just trying to do their job, and given the circumstances, did what they thought to be best at the time.

Could they have overreacted in arresting Mr. Gates? Sure. But like I said before Mike: Police officers are under a tremendous amount of stress, and they are Human; they are going to make mistakes.

And unlike you, I am going to wait until all the facts are in before I start criticizing anyone, especially those that put their lives on the line everyday to protect us.

Obama's Stupid Remark
If Obama is calling the Cambridge police officers stupid in regards to his pal the angry black guy getting arrested for disrupting the neighborhood and spewing racial remarks, then Obama is STUPID, he had no clue on what was going on and needs to keep his trap shut. Obama is a racist along with many he associated with, such as Jerimiah Wright and many others. Obama is reckless and very unpresidential in his remarks and should formally apologize for his stupid idiotic remark. Or better yet, Obama should be IMPEACHED!!!

Will liberals ever realize
That nonsensical racism accusations like this make it harder to identify and deal with the real ones?

Probably not: they are, after all, more concerned with fueling their anger than with actual social issues.

If You Are Dead

If you want better health/medical care, then use the road-building money to pay for Med/Mal and individual insurance premiums or use the Stimulus funds to cover those uninsured.

Seriously, what good is a bridge or road, if you're dead?

How did the officer
not act stupidly? Answer that

Keep in mind, the guy was in his own home and showed ID.

America's new Racism
When something like this occurs involving a white and a person of color, the assumption always is that the White person is acting on his inherent racist tendencies. Assigning expected behavior based on nothing more than race is exactly what the white officer was subjected to by the brilliant professor, and seconded by no less than our President (who confessed not knowing any other "facts"). That is racism at it's finest. He's white, therefore, like all white people, he's obviously driven by racism.
It's never going to end as long as there are race hustlers like these two at work.

Police Unions...

"Bad Cops" remain on the street for a good reason... Their Unions Protect them!

So, are we all in favor of banning 'Government Employees' from joining Unions?

Well Democrats?

So much
for the neighborhood crime watch program! I believe Elder hit the nail on the head, there was over reaction on both sides. If Gates hadn't had that initial reaction when being told that the police were there investigating an alleged crime this would have turned out very differently.

Hey Boone...George Bush had nothing to do with this, I'm quite sure he wasn't in MA when this took place.

The DJIA
The DOW could reach 100,000 and it would not benefit you nor would it help Obama.
