Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"Republicans, act more like Democrats!"

Actually, former Secretary of State Colin Powell put it somewhat differently when he offered his prescription to extricate the GOP from its "deep trouble."

Powell insists that Republicans must accept that the country has changed. "Americans do want to pay taxes for services," he said. "Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less." In other words, Republicans simply need to surrender to President Obama and the Democrats' outrageous and radical push/pull for more government in, well, everything. Or, as former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean snappily puts it, "I think we've had quite enough capitalism in the last eight years, and I think we need some regulation now."

Many, if not most, Americans do want a welfare state. Certainly, Americans rail against excessive government spending, but try asking, "OK, where would you like to cut?" Health care? Well, no. Education? No, not that. Aid to the poor? No. Social Security? Uh-uh. Disaster relief for those hard hit by floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, broken levees? No, too harsh. Unemployment benefits for those out of work during this severe recession? No, lacks compassion.

The problem is that Republicans have already been acting like Democrats -- and for a long, long time. In 2000, they nominated then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush. He promised to serve as the education president and signed into law No Child Left Behind, which further injected the feds into a state matter. He promised and delivered a prescription bill for seniors, which expanded Medicare by the largest amount since the program's inception. His dad, former President George Herbert Walker Bush, signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act, a hideous intrusion into the private sector rationalized by compassion. On the 10th anniversary of the ADA, George W. praised his dad's program.

Let's go back further. Republicans initially resisted -- and quite fiercely -- the New Deal programs passed during the Franklin Delano Roosevelt administration. And the Supreme Court, at least initially, declared many of Roosevelt's expansionary programs unconstitutional.

After Roosevelt's first win, in 1932, Republicans failed to recapture the White House until 1952. That year, a major GOP contender for the nomination, the "fiscally conservative" Sen. Robert Taft of Ohio, promised to undo parts of the New Deal. But even he accepted Social Security and public housing for the poor. The "moderate" GOP contender and eventual winner, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, not only accepted the New Deal but also used tax dollars -- purportedly for national security -- to construct the interstate highway system.

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie recently said that under the George W. Bush administration, spending got out of control. We hear this refrain constantly: Republicans spent too much; Republicans let spending get out of control; we need to return to fiscal responsibility.

But if, in fact, Bush erred in signing and the Republicans in Congress wrongly voted for the No Child Left Behind Act, shouldn't Republicans condemn it, repent and vote for its repeal?

But if, in fact, Bush erred in signing and the Republicans in Congress wrongly voted for the prescription bill for seniors, shouldn't Republicans condemn it, repent and vote for its repeal?

But if, in fact, Bush erred in signing and the Republicans in Congress wrongly voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, shouldn't Republicans condemn it, repent and vote for its repeal?

Americans like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. And President Obama won the election, in part, by calling it a "matter of neighborliness" to tax A for the benefit of B. That this creeping socialism defies the Constitution and weakens economic growth is of little consequence to many Americans.

Republicans can regain the White House by standing on principles -- and explaining their purpose and utility. The party needs candidates unafraid to convince the American people that the Founding Fathers designed the Constitution as a contract that restricts the federal government to a handful of important services, not least of which is national security. Republicans need to show how Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid -- to say nothing of the various entitlement programs advocated by the current administration -- will bankrupt the country. Republicans must make the case, however difficult and unpopular, for private savings accounts, a free-market-based approach to health care, and private charity for the needy.

Powell says the country has changed. If so, does that mean Republicans should simply stand by and accept it, offering only minor modifications? Or should Republicans summon the courage to explain how and why this "change" threatens no less than the very existence of the Republic?

I have a suggestion for you. Move to France.

paying taxes...
Mr. Powell says Americans want to pay taxes for services. I would question that. Where did he get that opinion? Just who wants to pay more taxes for services? What exactly are those services? Who are the users of those services? What are the taxes? How much are the taxes?

His comment needs to be cleared up. As it stands, Mr. Powell's advice is useless.

Hey Larry,

Americans want to help the helpless.

Only Liberals want to help the clueless.

Big Difference. We can help the helpless without putting the next generation in debt.

Not so much
This is about priorities. More or less government?
I know how I want to spend what I earn.
History proves government programs fail because the purpose is keeping democrats in office, welfare recipients dependent, while supplementing programs with working Americans' money.
Problem is middle class Americans run out of money. Will Washington be able to afford more "assistance?"
Washington looks more like a Turkish bath house everyday. They should just go clothing optional.

Stuck on Stupid!
Larry! Why talk about the decaying Republican Party? "The GOP lied. It died" Bury it - the stench is getting overwhelming!

We Conservatives need our own political party. Period! We are stuck on stupid if we think that the GOP can ever support a conservative agenda.

Did you see Senator DeMint's dememted statements that Republicans could be both for and against abortion - as long as they stayed with their conservative principles! They could be for and against open borders, One World Government, etc. as long as they paid nominal support to "limited" government! Yikes!

Larry, we need our leaders to help the Conservatives make an en masse move to a Conservative Party whether the Constitution Party (which has an existing national political party infrastructure) or to a new one. Help us make the move! It is what Leaders do!

Expecting the GOP to credibly change its stripes is being stuck on stupid!

Politics abhors a vacuum
Hendry B. is righton. America needs a conservative party. But more importantly it needs a center party as well, because somebody has to eventually form a legitimate, plausible opposition to the Democrats. Only a center party can do so because the conservatives have so thoroughly discredited themselves.

Wake Up
The Republican "party" is not some organism unto itself...its made up of you and me.

Quote: "We Conservatives need our own political party. Period! We are stuck on stupid if we think that the GOP can ever support a conservative agenda."

Well if you want a conservative party make the Republican party conservative by actively endorsing conservative candidates. Be a conservative in the Republican party and the Republican party will be conservative...there are more of "us" than of "them".

I hate to say it but the Democrats actually got this one right...they embraced the socialists and communists and wrapped their collective arms around the far left wing of their party and look where it has taken them. They didn't become "moderate", far from it, after losing control and becoming the minority party they turned hard left (with a few "moderate" stumbles along the way).

All those liberal-lite "moderate" Republicans and far left Democrats telling the Republicans to become more "centrist" (code for lean further left) do not have the best interests of the party or our Country at heart. Conservatives, Libertarians and Right-thinking Independents need to flood the Republican party and make it the bastion of Conservative ideals.

Attn Will
Rush will never run for political office, (though I;d vote for him in a heartbeat). He doesn't want to take a pay cut. And who could blame him?

Hero To Goat
Powell should have remained in his milieu - the military, where he was quite successful. Isn't it strange that Powell excelled in an environment where largely your success or failure is predicated on your performance. No one becomes a General because he or she is telegenic, cute or beguiling. People succeed in the military on their own personal achievements, one rank at a time, one mission, one task, one assignment at a time, building their career like a mason builds a quality wall - brick by brick - a succession of positive and productive actions. That would be the kind of environment full of conservative values, where those who achieve embody those values in everything they do, everyday.

Now, for whatever unfathomable reason he has, Powell decides he's more comfortable leaning left and he wants us to believe the country favors more government. Even if he actually believed that was a valid observation you'd think it would not be in confluence with his principles and he wouldn't tout it openly.

Powell, you had your day in the sun and served your country proudly, professionally, efficiently and effectively. It appears to be time for you to withdraw from the field - your recent actions do a distinct disservice to a free people and lessen your accomplishments as a once-great defender of the Republic.

Mike
Couldn't have put it better. I have been sadly disappointed with Gen. Powell's public service. He seems to have Arlen Specter syndrome. When the Repubs are in the oval office, he is on call, ready to spew the Repub mantra. When the tide had turned and it appeared a Dem would take the office, all of a sudden he is a leftie. I agree, he needs to retire and spend time with his wife and grandkids. I am sure over the years he has sacrificed his family for the good of his public service. He has his health and his marriage is in tact. He needs to spend the rest of his years getting to know his wife all over again and repay her for putting up with him all these years.

lilly
I choose freedom over security. If you do the opposite you will neither have nor deserve either.

A New Capitalism
The problem is Conservatives have to recognize there are flaws in the old Capitalist model. Limbaugh, et al., believe corporations are run by competent entrepreneurs.
Sorry guys, those days are long gone. Our large corporations are run by people who know little about their businesses. The CEO of GM has probably never worked a day in a factory. Nor, does he have a clue how to improve productivity to compete in a worldwide market.

The system has produced generations of bean counters whose only solutions are to move jobs off shore.

The people are correct. This old Capitalist model is a failure. We need to acknowledge that as fact and fix it. There are free market, conservative solutions that can make America competitive again. Think out of the box. America has the talent. But neither the old Capitalism nor Obama's Socialism is the answer.

Mike
Sadly, I have seen officers that were as useless as teats on a boar hog. Yes most officers gain rank by performance only, but some have caused the deaths of some very good men just because they thought they knew more than combat experienced men when they themselves had no experience themselves.

Constitution as a Curiosity...
The US Constitution has become more of a curiosity than a document that needs to be followed. Both parties are at fault for this left turn to distruction. The republicians choice for president, John McCain, was a joke. I'm not putting the man down. His service as Senator is admirable but he was a poor choice for the presidential seat. Which is why he lost. The republicians need to revisit the values that were once the foundation of this great country. If we don't, we'll become as blind as Lilly. France would be a good place for Lilly to relocate.

RJBjr
With all due respect son, We do have a perfict solution for CEO who don't do a good job. Ready? It's called failure, and bankruptcy. We don't need more rules, or regs.
Kirk

FREEDOM
Thats what this is about and what the Republican party needs to be about. You libs need to ask yourselves, why are you so anxious to give up your freedoms? CVN65 said it best, I choose freedom over security. If the government allows me to be free to care for myself I am more then happy and willing to take care of my own security...believe me!

Its sad but we as conservative republicans need to remind people of value freedom!!!

RJB
If you believe Capitalism in ANY form is a failure then you dont know what capitalism is.

You wrote: "The system has produced generations of bean counters whose only solutions are to move jobs off shore." I have 2 questions for you. 1) What is the main goal of any business? 2) Why would a company want to move jobs off shore?

RJB
Capitalism ALWAYS works but ONLY if, as Kirk correctly pointed out, people are allowed to fail. Failure is an essential element in capitalism, its what promotes innovation, growth and most importantly competition. So if by saying "This old Capitalist model is a failure"(from your last post) you mean the capitalism where businesses get bailed out then yes you are correct that model is a failure. BUT thats not capitalism.

THIS is the way forward! FUNNY, TRUE!
Check out this black conservative's idea of the way forward here. http://theblacksphere.blogspot.com/2009/05/republican-solu tion-to-winning.html

Finally a guy who makes sense!! HILARIOUS too!

The Failure of Capitalists
The failure of Capitalists was to allow the Socialists to screw with the system. Once you introduce socialism into a free maket it spreads like a cancer gobling up resources and destroying incentive. This entire economic crisis was created by the socialist agenda...starting with the New Deal up to and including the banking bailout debacle. I blame both the Republicans and the Democrats for this mess.

However this country runs on a 2 party system and the best way (IMHO) to bring a conservative agenda forward is for the Conservatives to subsume the Republican party. All this complaining about the Republican "party" being too this or that is nonsense...its made up of people, just like you and me, and if the overwhelming majority of those people are conservatives then the party will "be" conservative and espouse conservative ideals.

Third parties serve to highlight specific issues but rarely affect an entire platform of policies. The only way to push for ALL of the conservative ideals is to "own" 1 of the 2 major parties and seeing as how the Democrats seem to be taken I believe that leaves us, the conservatives, with the Republicans. Conservatives actually outnumber Liberals and, if we band together, we would certainly outnumber the "moderates" within the Republican party.

I am not saying to the Liberatarians or the Constitutionalists or the Right-thinking Independents to give up your principles or your identity what I am saying is to gather beneath the Republican banner and fight as one for our conservative ideals.

Will
That was actually funny. Problem is, most true conservatives would agree with you and, if they didn't know you, would think you're serious.

And for once, you didn't try to stand-up for butt-plugging. Congratulations.

'That One'...Conning Us Again.
Obama has decided not to release the evil pictures of the horrible torture our troops did to the Muslims.Wonder why?

Certainly not because it was the patriotic thing to do. He is not familiar with that word.Is it because he is getting more publicity from NOT releasing them than if he did?

If he thought it would make him look better in the eyes of the socialist/Marxists in this country,he would show them himself. Evidently,he is disappointed that they are not as bad as he had hoped.

No,I contend they are not so distasteful as to make viewers recoil in revulsion. He will take the weeks of media hype about how he is 'thinking of what is good for the country and our troops',even if it is a lie.

Also, what business is of his to release or not release pictures? Oh I forgot ,he is the Alpha and Omega of of our lives, now.

RJBJr;

The CEO of GM that was recently fired and replaced by Obama had 31 years with GM. I will bet he knew more about the auto industry than the person he was replaced by. What do you think? As far as jobs going offshore, well the new CEO of GM said that after they file for bankruptcy they plan on moving their operations offshore. Strange?

Thanks Larry, lets see & hear more you!
I always enjoy your common sense, informative articles Larry, which I post regularly on facebook. Speak out more, make more of a presence: tv, T.E.A. rallies, etc, we need to hear more from you. I read in a Boortz book that, over the years, Democrats have drawn Black & Hispanic Americans out of convincing them the Dem. Party was the one of compassion. But you reminded us during the election that the legacy of the Republicans (Lincoln, Martin Luther King, etc) has been the Party to fight for individual Liberties for all. America needs a truthful history lesson, which includes the history of the Rep, Dem. & other political parties-what they once stood for, how they've changed, what they are now. You are a key voice in Conservatism - raise your voice loudly, Americans need to hear you!

Socialist schools
"No Child Left Behind" does not further inject the feds into a state matter. It injects the feds into an individual matter. We should make sure all children have an education by providing vouchers and then getting out of the way. Socialist (government owned) schools are not even close to what is possible.

Slavery
It is not neighborliness to tax A for the benefit of B. It is permanent part-time slavery of A to B.

Airborne82nd
Obama does not fret that they are going overseas. He longs to be President Of The World. He is a globalist and what is good for the globe is good for him.

Much of the money he has allocated has gone overseas. That is the reason we have not been given the straight story about where the money went.

Everything he and his handlers are doing is for the New World Order he is anticipating. We must be brought to our knees before that step can be consumated.

Let Republicans Be Republicans...
I agree with Mr. Elder's advice to the GOP, which is in effect:

Let Republicans BE Republicans...

As this article so firmly establishes republicans can only be themselves when they stick to their conservative guns and reject any tenets of liberalism. They must reject, fight against and seek the removal of any programs within the federal government that were born of liberalism, no matter how popular they are with the american people.

If dems/libs are in control of the federal govt
and the majority has rejected the gop and conservatism, the way to defeat them is to become MORE conserative and rid the party of moderates rino's. Ideas on solving the nations are unnecessesary because that even though the majority voted for change by electing the dems to lead the federal government they are all
blind sheep who are being lead to slaughter by their messiah Prez Obama who is a closet dictator, is committed to destroying the U.S. system of capitalism and replacing it with
marxist socialims/capitalism.

This is not the change the american people voted for and when it inevitably fails the majority will come back on bended knees to the gop, begging for our leadership.

Did I get it right repubs/cons? lmao

New capitalism?
What old capitalist model is a failure? Fascism is what failed and caused jobs to move elsewhere.

Fascism is a system in which individuals are the owners while government sets all the important policies and procedures. When the government policies fail, the individual owners also get the role of scapegoat. For example, the high gasoline costs caused by regulations amounting to fascism, but "evil" speculators got blamed.

John McCain is not a RINO
Yes, I said it. Allow me to explain.

The usual definition of RINO is: a card-carrying party member whose views & actions are wrong for the party - that is, too far left.

But if the GOP was a truly conservative party, it wouldn't be in the mess it's in today.

Look at the way the party has behaved the past generation - the continual leftward drift, the submission to so much of the Democratic/socialistic agenda. This could not have happened if the party leaders had been conservatives.

But they aren't, and their behavior forbids anyone from thinking they are. They're opportunists, social democrats, or people who feel that taking a stand one pace to the right of Obama makes them "good conservatives."

John McCain is not a RINO, nor is Olympia Snowe, George Voinovich, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc. These are Republicans In Full - members in good standing with their party. These are the movers, shakers and policy-makers within the party.

The true RINOs are the likes of Tom Tancredo, Tom Coburn, Jeff Sessions. These are the ones who are out of step with the GOP and what it stands for.

Let's consider Arlen Specter for a moment. He bolted the party because he thought he'd lose the primary to Pat Toomey. But remember, the last time Specter went up for re-election, he could count on support from within the party - from the president, no less! - as he tried to hold his senate seat against a truly conservative challenger.

Can anyone here doubt that, if McCain were president, he'd be throwing Republican weight around to ensure that Specter would be safe from all challengers?

Think about it – Toomey had to wait until the GOP leadership was weak to make headway against liberal Arlen Specter.

Are you a red-blooded, red-meat eating all-American conservative? My hat's off to you, - America needs more of you. Now, do you want to see the face of a RINO? Look in the mirror. You're the one who doesn't belong on the Republican Party.

Smaller government?
Perhaps the GOP's message of smaller government would resonate better with voters if they stopped trying to legislate peoples personal lives? You can't be a social conservative and a small government conservative. Its a contradiction.

BK
Interesting observation and you are correct. I do not belong in the Republican Party because it has changed into Democrat Lite, and I stayed the same. Whether it will change back or be replaced is yet to be seen.

BTW, on many issues, bipartisanship is just another term for collaborating with the enemy.

lithium dangle, permanent black victim
so the welfare loser chips in with more advice for repubs.

Seems you are another who has to worry about getting his lips cut when the messiah pulss up his zipper.

In your pathetic world all victim groups are entitled to more handouts, and like all the leftists losers in this country you fail to understand the responsibility of taking care of your own mistakes and bad choices.

But again fool, the country didn't vote for your love obkect, the fool from chicago to force socialism on america.

But we do see that flap ears remains a world class liar. He claims he will put childish things behind him and then laughs when your typical black comedian expresses her hatred towards whites, as sykes fully voices the same attitude your messiah and his horse faced hateful wife share, thanks to the rev hatred.

Flap ears promised to be the great unifier, instead he tells repubs you aren't needed for my socialist revolution to get enacted.

The truth for the country is that we have nothing more than a socialist/commie who is determined to make gov't the sole arbiter of every aspect of life. But why would you care, you are both too lazy and too stupid to make your own choices and need more handouts from gov't just to survive

But the country didn't vote for him to change the country, a majority of voters voted for him to be president expecting him to work with both parties in congress and to compromise on all issues.

Instead we see another loser who thinks he is dictator and acts without consulting congress through executive fiat.

But how will the leftists losers like you justify his loss at the polls oin the next ewlection cycle.

Like your typical black, it will be labeled as racist for turning against your messiah, and not the real cause that he is both clueless about the country and dangerous to the economy

IT'S TIME!
IT'S TIME WE TAKE EVERY DIME.THE 250,000 DOLLAR LIMIT,THAT'S NOTHING.LET'S GO ALL THE WAY!THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE WORTH BILLIONS,LET'S TAKE EVERY FRICKEN DIME.ALL OF IT!THEN LET THE GOVERNMENT PASS OUT THE APPROPRIATED, FAIR AMOUNT OF INCOME.HOW ABOUT THESE MOVIE STARS MAKING 20 PLUS MILLION PER MOVIE,TAKE IT ALL.THESE PIGS OF OUR SOCIETY,TAKE IT ALL!
THEY ARE ALL A MUCH OF BIG DOLLAR,BLOOD SUCK'N SOCIETAL THIEVES.

Taxes for services
Americans don't want to pay taxes for services. Americans want others to pay taxes for their services.

Why was Bush hated?
Not because of the Medicare Part D, or the idea of no child left behind! He was hated form day one because the liberals wanted Al Gore and claimed that Bush and the Supreme Court stole the election!
Second, Bush openly stated that he followed Jesus Christ's "philosophy". The liberals hunted him and the religious right all throughout his presidency.
Third, the just war against the terrorists who attacked us. I still consider it a genial strategy to wage this war off US soil in a country that was already world-wide denounced for support of suicide bombers and similarly widely suspected of owning and manufacturing WMDs. Eventually this war was used against his administration to destroy all reasonable Republicans, influencing even faith based Republicans to turn against him.
I am telling all of you Republicans who are so dead set against the likes of G W Bush, that there will come a time when we’ll wish another president like him would lead us. The man was a compassionate conservative as he always claimed to be. He also was a gentleman who from day one of his presidency never blamed anyone else for whatever went wrong during his administration.
I am sick and tired of Bush bashing, even from so-called conservative Republicans. Wasn’t the issue of unaffordable prescription drugs for seniors the raging issue in 2000? So Bush did something about it. Compared with what this administration is doing fiscally, foreign policy and sociologically, Bush was a conservative’s conservative!
Count your blessings that Bush was your president during 9/11/2001 and you are still alive today!

BK is Right
The Republican Party is now the other party of big government and there will be no push for individualism and the free market until the Republican Party joins the Whigs in the history books.

The Republican party is like socialism: it doesn't work and it can't be fixed. It has to be abolished.

poorgrandchildren @ 10:34
My money's on the party being replaced. Have you
ever tried quoting Goldwater to a 21st-Century Republican? It's like quoting the Bible to Epicsopalians - it just embarrases them. The GOP
has gotten too much socialism ingrained too deeply to save it now.

Conservatism lives - or to put it more bluntly, Americanism lives. We just need a party to apply conservatism in the political arena. If the Republicans fail to do so, it's time to go shopping, and let the GOP go the way of Pan-American Airlines and Rambler automobiles.

Life Is Dangerous, Lilly!
Lilly: "I have been keeping house in the United States of America for 56 years. Never in my life until these recent years of Republican orgy did I have to worry, when I go to the grocery store to buy food, that I would come home with salmonella-contaminated hamburger and fish, or with cookie filling full of some Chinese chemical, or with salad greens that would have us all in the Emergency Room Vomitorium by midnight."

Lilly, don't step out of the house you might get hit by a meteor and we don't have a shield up over the earth yet.

I think you're ready for a nursing home where doctors and nurses care for you under Obama's proposed new health care program.

But, wait, even the government will be forced to ration health care and the elderly are going to be left to die, not from poisoned food and global warming, or meteors, but just from the withholding of life-saving drugs.

Lilly, the universe is a dangerous place and nobody and no government can protect you from all the potential life-killing dangers.

You should have learned that decades ago.

And you should also have learned that the Government's embrace can kill you. Just google the USSR, Hitler's Germany, and Mao's China.

Go to France
Lilly probably prefers to bring France here instead of going to the effort of moving there. If that is her plan, right now, it is working.

lilly
You are an idiot! Period.

Apollo @ 10:47
Let me run this idea past you - when someone asks me if America needs a third party, I say "No, we need a second party. We only have one, the Democrats and their Republican auxiliary."

*sigh*
There is a distinction to be made here, yes. It is the distinction between proper regulation and government ownership.

The bottom line though is that the poor outnumber the rich by a wide margin, and there's never been a world in which a person seeking power has not seen to utility in offering more to the poor in exchange for their support.

Guess what Republicans. You better start paying more attention to the poor, one way or the other.

First, I think we should take a crack at changing corporate law so that boards automatically include members representing the interests of the workers in that company. That's not socialism. That just makes it where people don't have to pay protection money to the Labor Unions to get a seat at the negotiating table with the company any more.

It would be built in.

Hendry B
I have been a Republican for a long time, but I am close to agreeing with you. Just when I start having a little hope that our Party leaders have finally "gotten it" they slide back into the usual spinelessness. I had hopes for our own GOP Senator Cornyn, then he rushed out to endorse Crist in FL. As for Colin Powell, whom I once held in high esteem, he now has a strong liberal odor. I don't care how many "GOP" stickers he might place on his door I believe he is subverting conservative values.

Taxes
Well said article. WE all want to do our part. But signing 1100 page bills without reading, when half may have been sufficient is insane. Too many people want to make drugs legal, so they can do what???? Vote for more bills they have not read. Then they would be too stoned to understand. That is what this country needs - MORE TOO STONED TO COMPREHEND PEOPLE?????

BK
Can you name one issue Obama and McCain disagree with each other on? There is a difference between an ideologue and a crony. An ideologue puts his or her's ideology before party. A crony is one who blindly votes for party no matter what it thinks or does.

Democracy only works if parties and individuals are based on ideology and follow their ideology. It is insane to say "I am Republican/Democrat no matter what." That's cronyism. In democracy with ideologues there is compromise, but if both parties start looking identical (again name one issue Obama and McCain disagreed on) than going out to vote is demotivating at best. Conservatives responded precisely how they should have.

But I agree with Yoshi, conservatives have to decide what is more important. State's rights or conservatives values. Because if you are a true conservative than you don't believe conservatives values have a place in national elections. You believe they are state issues and should be solved by states. Not this greedy powerful desire to impose your values on everyone just because you think it's right.

Lilly is right
And she clearly struck a nerve. Balanced regulation IS NOT COMMUNISM!

Get that through your heads, or expect to keep losing elections, Republicans.

And I say this as something of a Republican ringer. I simply will not vote Democrat until they stop being the party of immorality, but I can at least see the writing on the wall here.

Now, you might make some hay pointing out the Dems have been a big part of the mad rush to deregulation, but pretending the poor, misbegotten filthy rich among us are the ones needing a break is just getting old old old old old old old.

Mel - I was once where you are
I spent a couple decades crossing my fingers and praying that the GOP would actually make the right turn it advertises with each election.
I hung on and held out, and I'll tell you, it was hard for me to admit I'd been betting on the wrong horse for so long.

Allow me to make a prediction, sir. When you see the GOP senate members tamely, courteously vote in favor of Obama's upcoming SCOTUS nominee, that'll be the day you've had enough.

We the people
We, the people, are more to blame than the corporations for the loss of jobs, not the corporations. The corporations provide a product that comsumers must buy for it to remain in business. If the consumers are not buying the product made by the corporations using labor in the USA, but will buy the same product made by labor from Mexico, because it is 15 to 20 percent cheaper, then the corporation will produce the product in Mexico. Now if the consumer paid the premium associated with manufacturing the product in the USA, the the corporations would not move the jobs off shore.

Consumers must buy the Made in USA product regardless of cost to keep the jobs here. Consumers must reject the Made in China product no matter how cheap it is. Consumers must demand that the retailers provide a choice to buy a wide variety of products that carry the Made in USA label.

I will vote for the conservative no
matter what the political party. Any takers?

De-mob-ocracy
Yes, the poor outnumber the rich by a wide margin, and those who want to control everyone seems to outnumber those who want to live and let live.

Our country's founders saw these problems, learned from the Greeks, rejected democracy, and mandated a constitutional republic in Article 4, Section 4. However, the mob wanted our government to degenerate into a "wonderful" democracy. Now persons seeking power have to offer more to the poor and the control freaks in exchange for their support.

The Democrats deliver more loot and control than the Democrats Lite, and due to the rules of de-mob-ocracy, they are in power.

Jason @ 10:58
Can I name one issue Obama and McCain disagree with each other on? As I recall (and I confess, I've gotten rusty on their stands since the campaigns ended), there was something to choose between them in the area of national security. But even if McCain talked a good conservative talk last year (which he didn't), I still would've had a hard time trusting him to walk the conservative walk in office. Or even if he tried, his party wouldn't have joined him in the political stuggle.

If you're aking if I've settled into voting against the GOP from knee-jerk force of habit
and nothing else, well, I believe I've avoided that trap so far. I do still search the party
for signs of conservatism. But I also see how the powers-that-be in the party treat their conservative RINOs. It keeps me far from supporting the party.

Regulations
It is true that balanced regulation is not communism. However, the excessive regulations we have in America amount to fascism.

Lilly, fascism is a "right wing" evil, so can I assume you are against it?

"A democracy, when corrupted, becomes
the worst government under the sun." (John Adams)
Aristole observed that democracies
fail when power hungry politician purchase power through ever-increasing programs of wealth
redistribution.
Look at Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and Europe as examples of the masses affection for government largesse.
The Founding Fathers attempted to blunt that problem by limiting voting rights to taxpayers only. Unfortunately, liberalism now encourages the vote of felons, illegal aliens, and those who would enslave others via the vote.
Bush was a Bozo in regard to spending==Obama is ebeyond that--his programs are unsustainable.

Teaching comes first
You are correct. Even many of our legislators don't understand WHY positions are right or wrong. Like the effort to tax AIG execs at 90%. Many Republicans voted for it, even though it was clearly violating the spirit, and likely the letter, of the law.

Paul Ryan said "I wouldn't have voted for it if I had known it was unconstitutional". Well if he doesn't know, he should learn more before voting. Or, if a measure doesn't CLEARLY SUPPORT the Constitution, vote against it.

We need a prolonged period of education about the importance of liberty versus the siren call of personal security. People are too used to given the government control over their lives - now Cheerios can't even say it's healthy, because the FDA says it's not a drug. It's time to reinstill personal responsibility into the discussion.

Thats The Problem
Quote: "I spent a couple decades crossing my fingers and praying that the GOP would actually make the right turn it advertises with each election."

It takes action and strong advocacy to change the direction of a political party. Joining a 3rd party and "croosing your fingers" will get you the same result. Be a conservative, suupport conservatives, make your conservative values known and shout the from the rooftops...it wont make a difference unless you take control of 1 of the 2 major political parties in America. If the conservatives can't band together and take control of the Republican party how do you expect a fractured 3rd party to take the control of the country? If conservatives can't "fix" the Republican party how are they going to "fix" the federal government? The answer is for conservatives of all makes and models to join together under the Republican banner and set the agenda for the Republican party...make the Republican party your party, the party of conservative ideals.

Control Freaks Unanimous
What is the Democrat exit strategy from the quagmire of the War on Poverty?

What is the Democrat Lite exit strategy from the quagmire of the Wars on Drugs and "Deviant" Sexual Orientation?

Re: Kuddos!!!!
But highly stress staying with the prinicpals of limited Gov., Low Taxes , and CUT SPENDING!!!

Self-destruct
History shows that the party in power will eventually over-step and fail from within. If Obama fails to turn the economy around, or has a major failure in national security, he and the democratic party will fall from power.

The Carter administration is a prime example of what can happen to the Obama administration. With a known tax cheat as Sec. of Treasury, a dilusion woman as Sec. of State (sniper fire, remember), and an Attorney General that thinks we are all racial cowards, there is a high potential for the administration to self-destruct. Just give it time.

Tax Wealth Instead of Income?
"Now, you might make some hay pointing out the Dems have been a big part of the mad rush to deregulation, but pretending the poor, misbegotten filthy rich among us are the ones needing a break is just getting old old old old old old old."

One thing to keep in mind is that there are more liberal millionaires than there are conservative millionaires.

The problem we have is that we tax "income" and not "wealth" as much. This allows people like Ted Kennedy to pay taxes on his $250K income from his senate seat, when he's got millions, if not a billion, in accumulated wealth. The "ruling" class in Washington are a bunch of rich folks who have accumulated wealth but don't have all that much income to declare on an annual basis.

Also, the problem we have with "taxing" the rich, who supposedly are anybody making more than $200K/yr, is that many small businesses declare their incomes as personal incomes and are easily above that threshold. Again, if we switched to taxing wealth heavier than we tax incomes, we might make the above statement a little more true. Then, people such as Ted Kennedy would be taxed heavier than people are when Ted and PBO come up with new laws to more heavily tax incomes.

We are one of the more heavily taxed countries in the world now. Our corporate tax rates are certainly amongst the highest. This is one reason we have lost some of our competitive edge and have seen corporations move operations off shore. And guess, what. Corporations love government laws which force smaller businesses to provide benefits for employees. They know it impacts the smaller businesses more heavily. Those smaller businesses compete with the large corporations and any impact on the small business profits benefits the larger corporations, who can more easily afford it and can also afford to move more of their operations off shore, away from heavier government mandates and regulations.

Not nearly far enough
Elder doesn't go nearly far enough. Republicans need to repudiate ALL of the policies he identifies. Period. They must persuade the American people to REJECT the liberal ideas that are the justifications for Social Security, Medicare, Obamacare, and every other entitlement program ever created. This can't happen until and unless conservatives realize
that they stand at a historic juncture in American politics. Never, in our entire political history, has there been a major party that is truly on the Right, totally, from the deepest conviction. The conservative base of the Republican Party has the opportunity to transform their party into a true party of the Right.

This change would bring the party and its leadership into alignment with its base. The base must, so to speak, command the leadership. The base establishes the parameters of what is and is not doctrinally consistent with conservatism. The strategists just have to adapt if they want to win.

But ideological change depends on personal change. All genuine conservatives must REFUSE to take any 'benefits' from the federal government. Don't take that Social Security check. Don't enroll in Medicare. Don't take that home mortgage interest deduction on your income tax. In fact, don't pay your income tax except some fraction of it that goes for national defense, and be man enough to take the consequences. Don't use any drugs that have been approved by the FDA, don't use any bank that is supported by the government, and do not do business with any corporation that has 'benefitted' from Obama's bailout. Pay your own way through life, and accept no entitlements!

If y'all don't do these things, then we liberals will know that you're the big pussies we think you are.

John @ 11:28
The big reason I will no longer go with the idea
of fixing the GOP is that it's no longer fixable. To make the Republican Party into a conservative party would be to destroy the party as it now exists and put a new, conservative party in its place. But before that can happen, the Republican powers-that-be will fight tooth and nail, clean and dirty, to keep conservatism out.

So, I thinks it's better to bypass them and their party. Instead, let's proceed directly to the work of establishing a conservative party, which would not be a "third" party, but more truly a second party to oppose the liberalism of the Democrats and their tame Republican appendage.

If conservatives waste time trying to take control of the GOP from Nelson Rockefeller's ghost, Democrats will use that time to maintian and strengthen the hold they now have on the country. THAT'S the enemy conservatives and true Americans muct resist. Let the GOP leaders lead their party to oblivion. It'll make no difference to liberals or conservatives.

D-Fayette: Praying For Failure...
Is a losers proposition and highlights that it's possibly the only way for the gop to win elections in the future because they have absolutely no ideas on how to solve the nations problems..The democrats are not going self destruct and if you are relying on that you are a fool. I dont have one doubt they are going to be successful.

The majority that elected prez oabama and the dem congress are overwhelmingly in approval of the job they are doing. there are already signs the economy is turning around. with the wars in iraq and afghanistan winding down that will have a positive effect of suburban soccer moms, dems having overwhelming support among the major minorities blacks/hispanics and splitting the difference with white males.
HOW are you going defeat that in 2010 & 2012?

BK @10:54 AM EST
You're right. I should have said "the Republican party is the other half of the party of big government"

It's not like they don't really tell you what they are, it's just that they try to make it sound palatable. With all the posthumous praise for Jack Kemp people forget that he advocated many expansions of the federal government. His "enterprise zones" was just the government picking winners and losers with tax policy.

The Democrats shifted hard left and won everything so the Republicans think that by running one quarter inch to the right of the Dems they can pick up more and more "centrist" votes. What they don't understand is when they say "we're just like the Dems, only not so much" they merely inspire the voters to go for the "pure" version.

You can't concede principles and then say that the principles should only be partially followed. That's a formula for a permanent defeat.

To Joel's post @ 11:36 AM EST
I agree one hundred percent. Taxing wealth is the way to go. Some years ago, Warren Buffet commented that his secretary paid more income tax than he did.

If Obama really wanted to redistribute wealth, his sponsors would now be forking over billions. But Oprah is out bragging about her fossil fuel intensive, CO2 spewing private jet, where's the logic there?

Isn't odd, the likes of Oprah, Gates, and Buffet, while they claim to donate huge sums of money, never give enough away to drop them from the richest Americans list. They like their status, so their support of a wealth redistributionist is a little suspect.

Democrats Fell as Recently as 94.
In 94, the democrats were in a similar situation as they are now. They controlled both houses of Congress, they had the White House, and they had recently taken the White House from a "Bush" Presidency. But they fell from power in 94 and the Republicans took the Congress and limited Bill Clinton to moving back to the center to govern, for the most part.

Already, we've seen Obama and the democrats move to the center on several issues to try and keep from falling from power again. Obama has now decided to not release the prisoner photos after promising complete transparency. He has changed course on the assault weapons ban. However, on fiscal issues, he is moving hard left. If the economy doesn't turn around soon, he will be in trouble.

The republicans overspent and were rightly chastised for it by conservatives. Even liberals chimed in on how Bush and the GOP overspent. But Bush and the GOP are pikers compared to the democrats, who have controlled congress since 2006, and Obama. He has spent more money in his first 100 days than both Bushes, Reagan, and Nixon combined. The democrats didn't even bother to read the spending legislation which they overwhelmingly voted for. If it was big spending that was the topic, then they were for it and didn't need to waste time reading anything about how much was being spent, or when, and on whom. Or for what, for that matter.

If the GOP got trashed for overspending, then the Democrats should be buried in a landfill for the amount of spending they're doing. But don't worry. It's our kids and grandkids who will have to pay the bills when they come due. For now, we can party because Obama, Reid, Pelosi, George Soros, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Joe Biden are "In the House". Give it up folks. Give it up in your kids taxes that is.

Apollo @ noon
"What they don't understand is when they say "we're just like the Dems, only not so much" they merely inspire the voters to go for the "pure" version." Yes, I agree. But Lord! - if they don't understand by now, how can anyone have faith in them?

In a twisted way, I actually admire the Democratic Party. They can always be counted on to deliver the liberal goods as far as it's in their power to do so. But the GOP not only doesn't advance conservatism an inch, it seems as if their leaders have Nicholas Romanov's instinct for precisely the wrong thing to do in any given situation.

A question on BIG government...
you conservatives keep railing against BIG government and here is the problem.

the federal government IS BIG...no matter what party is in control of the white house or the u.s. congress.

you know all these politicians dem or repub run AGAINST washington and you know what? once they get here they find there is a ESTABLISHED POWER SYSTEM ALREADY IN PLACE AND TRY AS YOU MIGHT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO CHANGE IT...So therefore you adjust to it rather then the other way around. In washington power has it perks whether you are a majority or minority party member and go along with the system.

So how are you going to change that?

hold on republicans
Larry
I have seen you in debates before and have always been impressed with you knowledge, principals,& debating skills
With that being said, everyone here, is way off base, the conservatives biggest fight is with the corrupt media that fuels the liberals agendas using the illusory tactics, there is not one single program that the progressives has implemented into our society, that doesn't face bankruptcy or flat out doesn't work, and for the first time the American people are sounding off in a big way, and democrats know this, that's why they use illusory tactic and the media day after day, and why they have so many things going on at one time,(keep the public confused) they know there time is already running out, they are like spoiled brats in a candy store, they what everything in the store no matter if it is health for America or not, plus they want someone else to pay for there candy, and if they don't get there candy they run to there best friend the corrupt media.
The republicans will be fine, 2010 elections well change everything,(the republicans are leading in every poll for the 2010 elections) but they must allow the dems to run off the cliff, its a train wreak that is inevitable.Stay focused conservitives we will have the last laugh.

A question on spending...
I somehow get the idea that you repubs/cons think that 95% of the money Prez Obama and the dems are spending is on PORK, other totally wasteful expenditures and that absolutely none of it is being spent on pertinent operation cost of the federal govenment. I also get the impression that you believe that republicans do not participate in "earmarks". Do you have any proof of any of this?

A Question for Left Angle
Are you insane?

Left Angle
When you say "adjust to it," it means (correct me if I'm wrong) adjust to unlimited and unaccountable governmaental power.

Let's take a look at what you wish us to adjust to. It's been well-decribed.

"The Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn

"Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account" by Brono Bettleheim

"Tortures and Torments of the Christian Martyrs: The Classic Martyrology" by Reverend Antonio Gallonio

"Mayada, Daughter of Iraq: One Woman's Survival Under Saddam Hussein" by Jean Sasson

I could go on . . . and on. And even if you're right about he futility of ever cutting the government back to its proper and constitutional
role, there's a phrase to meet the situation - permit me to indtoduce you to it:

Live Free Or Die.

I suspect
That any of us could sit down with the federal budget and a highlighter and in a couple of days this budget would be balanced! Probably a surplus to boot and everybody would get a tax cut. Unfortunately that won't ever happen, to much big statist politics from both parties.

So much has been lost since the enumerated powers set forth in the constitution 250 years ago.

Education is the answer
Take a few minutes and read the Constitution. It's not very long, and it's really quite straight-forward.

For perspective, read the 10th Amendment before you start. (You'll find it near the end, in the list of Amendments).

Keep in mind as you read that all powers not expressly delegated to the federal government are reserved to the states and the individual.

Now, carefully and thoughtfully, without spin or preconception, look at our current government and see how closely aligned we are with the conditions of the Constitution.

Health care? You won't find it in the Constitution without twisting the meaning of the words. Abortion rights? Not there. Gay rights? Non-existant. Americans with Disabilities? Outside the realm of the feds' authority. Education? No.

That's not to say these issues are not important and don't need to be addressed. But the States have the authority over these matters.

So why does the federal government makes laws concerning issues that are reserved to the states and the individuals? Because the states and individuals allow it, and in some cases, even demand it.

We will never change the government in Washington until we change the ideas and attitudes of the citizens.

We have to start with ourselves, weaning ourselves from government handouts and programs, and then teaching those around us to do the same.

Then we have to carefully and intentionally pass our values to the next generation. Otherwise, our grandchildren will live in a country where freedom is just a memory.

Part Of The Problem
Good observations. It goes back to what Bush said when he asked are you part of the problem or part of the solution. As a conservative, my complaint is that our leaders complain about this and that all the time, but actually offer no real solutions to what they complain about. If for instance Social Security is one of the problems, what is their solution? If having a third party payment system for medical care is the wrong thing to do, what is their alternative? My suggestion is, don't just tell the American people what they think is wrong, have a solution to what you think is wrong. It is relatively safe to throw rocks at something that you think government is doing wrong, it is an entirely different thing to be willing to stick you neck out, which may get cut off, and provide an alternative to what you are complaining about.

Maxim
"Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good."

Some conservatives are purists,to the point that they stay home on election day or support an obvious loser on the ballot. We need to recognize that Ronald Reagan, whom we admire, had to compromise and scale back some of his agenda in order to accomplish other of his plans.

Jack Kemp was mentioned on TH as a lapsed conservative who advocated more government spending. I consider him a conservative, but a visionary, and he foresaw that the Black race was doomed if radical changes were not made, because thousands of minority children lived in dismal, crime-ridden housing projects and had parents who could not find employment in the inner-cities. He conceived of housing vouchers to get these kids away from the projects and into decent schools. He conceived of tax breaks to corporations for locating in inner cities where jobs were needed. Tsk tsk! Bad boy, according to conservatives.

I consider myself a fiscal and social issues conservative, "up to a point." (to use George Will's 4 most important words.) I do support visionary Republicans who propose solutions to seemingly intractable problems such as deteriorating inner cities, abysmal public schools, illegal immigration, health care costs, American's increasing use of drugs, the breakdown of the family unit, and others. Newt Gingrich is one of those visionaries.

Conservatives in 2009 seem to spend most of their time doing nothing about these serious situations when they are fully empowered, and serving as obstructionists when voted out of power. I'm glad they are Just Saying No to Obama, but they need to be more active in developing solutions and more vocal in recognizing the obvious problems we face. If they had done that in the last election, we wouldn't be facing new liberal appointees on the Supreme Court, which makes the job way harder now.

Great posts! I couldn't have said it better myself.

On another note, there is a Kevin from MO that particpates on the TH Boards. He is actually a fellow conservative named Kevin Jackson, who often plugs his blog, the Black Sphere. True conservatives should check this blog out, because his insights are great and if you think that we drive the liberats batsh*& on this site, you should see what he does on his! Besides being insightful, his writings are witty, (especially when he responds to libs) and the cartoons are hilarious!

10th Amendment
Good reminder! It is crucial to elect visionary Republican governors who are innovative in solving some of the seemingly intractable problems. Not sure how it is working, but Mitt Romney found a way to get every Mass. resident health insurance, ensuring that more hospitals don't have to close, and the uninsured do not jeopardize the rest. Some Republican governors initiated workfare, which was a needed innovation.

States that pioneer solutions to problems serve as models for others. That's the proper way to go. Government shouldn't be meddling in functions constitutionally delegated to states. Obama has embarked upon a blitzkreig of meddling.

I have recently started reading Kevins blogs........

Dam good stuff he writes......

Its Not That Easy
Quote: "The big reason I will no longer go with the idea of fixing the GOP is that it's no longer fixable."

As I said if you can't "fix" the Republican party what chance do you have of "fixing" the federal government?

Quote: "To make the Republican Party into a conservative party would be to destroy the party as it now exists and put a new, conservative party in its place."

No "destruction" needed. It would simply take a majority of conservatives to elect conservative leadership within the GOP who would then nominate conservative candidates and push a conservative agenda.

Quote: "But before that can happen, the Republican powers-that-be will fight tooth and nail, clean and dirty, to keep conservatism out."

So you don't think that both the Democratic party and the Republican party (sans conservatives) would then fight tooth and nail to keep an obscure 3rd party from entering debates, getting on the ballot or doing anything else that might usurp their power? And which parties do you think would get the lion's share of funding and national recognition? Which parties could call a press conference and actually have the media show up? As a 3rd party you'd be fighting not only the Democratic party machine and the liberal media but also the "moderate" Republican party which would no longer be tempered by any conservatives.

stilla
Great post.

I would consider what Kemp did as espousing conervative values as well. IMO, there is no reason not to support inner cities as long as governments do not take a suckling view of private industry and start milking them for higher and higher taxes.
Inner cities and projects are products of government intervention as well.

I disagree with your statement about GOP being able to win the last election....too much vested interest in MSM, liberals, moderates, etc, etc to see a black man in the white house.....too many kind hearted people really believed that this was a type of moral cleansing for themselves...an opportunity to show themselves that they are open minded.......

Gestell
The federal government also built the interstate highway system, so I guess you're also suggesting that conservatives should eschew the use of any interstate highway. And there are many other such examples I could name. And to such an idea I say: NUTS! I was forced to help pay for the interstate's construction and maintenance, so I'll be darned if I'm going to forfeit the use of a commodity I've paid for and have every legal right to use.

Social Security is NOT a "benefit" from the federal government: it is a FUND that I have PAID INTO - and was given no choice about being able to do so short of taking a job in the limited number of fields that are not subject to Social Security withholding. Why should I voluntarily forfeit my claim to a fund that I have a share of? That would be like telling me that I shouldn't take possession of the television set from the store to which I just paid money to purchase it. Or that I shouldn't accept the payout when I'm retired of the 401(k) fund that I've been contributing to all these years.

The more honest argument regarding your point on Social Security is that the government should allow people the option to contribute to it or not to contribute to it and leave THEM the decision on whether they want to trust the government to provide them an income in their old age or let them use the money that would otherwise be going to Social Security to try to finance themselves their retirement if they think they can do it better than the government - and then have to live with the consequences of their decision.

By the way, I don't know where you've been all these years, but the notion that one should withhold one's taxes to the government because one doesn't like some of the uses the government makes of that money is a talking point that in my lifetime I've seen almost totally confined to LIBERALS, who try to dress up their unhappiness about having to pay for national defense in such a fig leaf.

BK: The Perks Of Power...
youre off course..What I am talking about is the "culture" of Washington, D.C.

What you repubs/cons dont understand is that the
U.S. Congress in both houses is a "insider club"
with it's own rules and regulations, perks and priveleges, regardless of what party you are in.
There is a power sharing arrangement already set up before a new member even arrives here and those who campainged on "changing washingtoni" are in for a rude awakening when they get here if they indeed think they are going to CHANGE the system..I just dont work that way. NOT AT ALL.

The USA is in big trouble
We can not simply vote our way out of this mess. That notion is like a terminally ill patient thinking he can change doctors and suddenly be cured. The problem with America is that for years now the country is becoming increasingly morally corrupt. We are following the same sort of decline the Roman Empire died of. Things will improve when the American people repent and start obeying the Ten Commandments.

Simple Illustration Larry
Larry, Coming from a staunch fiscal conservative here........I think its rather easy...

One needs only to point to the liberal bastions of NY, CA, NJ, MA and others like to to so clearly illustrate the point of what liberalism gets you.......

Precipitous drop in Manufacturing Activity....
Private Enterprise leaving the state due to excessive taxation............
In many cases, native residents leaving the state......
Overstuffed social programs........
Transition of business out of states that bow to unionization to states that support right to work laws.........
Bloated budgets........

Its rich with opportunity....

What about Social Security??......well the recent news that it will go insolvent sooner than expected should be news enough to show its broken.........
There should, by all accounts, be trillions of dollars sitting there....for the public.....
But there is nothing there but a bunch if IOU's....money gone...taken by the federal government to spend on other pet projects......
Yet one more sign that the beneficial government has no interest in the welfare of the people........the fact that the money was spent for other things means that We the People, after being promised by the government to be stewards of the money that is rightfully ours.....have been lied to and stolen from.

The federal government has played kick the can down the road for too long.....that does for Dems and the GOP.

We are at a point now that the answers lie in truly painful realization..........

Colin Powell.....essentially has flushed his good name down the toilet with the public.....

Okay BK
Let's assume that the current GOP is permanently mired in the mud, and it may well be. Now comes the hard part. At some point we would have to get beyond just talk. Who is going to form the new party? Or do we join the Constitution Party? In other words what about some practical suggestions for action. Where do conservatives go from here, other than the continual griping many of us are so good at?

Granite eagle
Because of his views, he's obviously a racist, too! ;-)

Georgann, if I were from CO, I wouldn't be throwing stones at people from "rural Wyoming"! Unfortunately, I've had dealings with moonbats from your state that are just like you, because they're flocking here! You liberats just hate people that tell it like it is. Oh wait, unless it's one of you dolts that is saying it.

Georgann
Any Republican who lauds Dick Cheney as a warrior and patriot will lose handily in any forthcoming election.

The problem here Georgann is tha the MSM will incessantly hound any GOP candidate about whether they supported the previous administration..........
So a campaign that might be about.......

Shrinking the federal government.......
Supporting lower taxation..............
Supporting sustained economic growth...

May very well become a campaign where the candidate is forced into answering questions about whether or not they liked Cheney, liked Palin, Liked McCain.......

Conservatives. Stick to your principals

I support Conservatives who stick to their principles and drive liberals out of the Republican party. Only threw creative destruction of the Republican party will we get a new centrist party. The American political structure needs a revitalization. It need more political competition. I wouldn't mind seeing the Democratic Party go threw a similar disintegration and our electoral process be represented by three or more smaller parties creating make shift alliances to shape policy.

Left Angle:
"you know all these politicians dem or repub run AGAINST washington and you know what? once they get here they find there is a ESTABLISHED POWER SYSTEM ALREADY IN PLACE AND TRY AS YOU MIGHT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO CHANGE IT...So therefore you adjust to it rather then the other way around. In washington power has it perks whether you are a majority or minority party member and go along with the system.

So how are you going to change that? "

You raise a good point. How are we going to change what has become a corrupt, national, govt.? I don't have a direct answer, however, one thing I do know is that growing the beast by 2X as Obama is doing is NOT the answer. It will compound the problem and make it so that our children and grandchildren will pay such high tax rates that their own power and freedom will be virtually non existent. When you lose the power over your own labor, how can you ever be free? When the government demands that you hand over a majority of the value of your labor to them via taxes, you will have been enslaved by that government. For you will then be left with only enough to provide for the bare essentials, if even that. We already have a significant portion of our society that so depends upon the federal govt. that they could not make it on their own should the federal government cut their subsistence. The feds want even more of this dependency and PBO is trying to deliver. Is that good for America and our offspring in the long run? Not in my opinion. They will be nothing more than indentured servants to the federal government.

My Post continued:
As for what to do, that remains to be seen. The people who were protesting the tremendous growth of the federal government via the tea parties were ridiculed by Obama and the liberals who are now in charge. Of course they were ridiculed. They stood up to have their voices heard against this travesty and in hopes that others would join in the protest. That's what the first amendment allows for. They were concerned about the future generations.

Their one fault is that they may have waited too long to sound off. It may be well beyond anyones power to really stop it. We'll have to wait and see. The liberals are for increasing power in Washington, so they'll be of no help in fixing the situation. They love this situation. Why would they try to "change" it?

ShaneRoach sprayed
A "mad rush to deregulation" during the Bush Administration? If only! During the Bush years the Code of Federal Regulations was 8,000 pages longer in 2007 than it was in 2000. As a fan of regulation, you will be delighted to learn that that 2007 edition totaled 145,816 pages in length. I trust you and Lilly have carefully studied all of them.

Appropriations for federal regulatory agencies increased during the Bush years from $27 billion in 2001 to $44.9 billion in 2007 - a 44 percent increase in inflation-adjusted dollars. The total staffing of regulatory agencies went up nearly as much, from 172,000 employees to over 244,000 - a 41 percent increase.

Under your and Lilly's doctrine, that should have ushered in a prosperity boom. It didn't, because your premises are wrong in theory practice.

Joel: Repubs & Dems Dont GET it...
Look, I live in this area and I observe the game up close and personal and like I said, the u.s. congress is a "inside club" for ALL it's members whether you are a republican or democrat
with it's own rules, regulation, perks and priveleges.

There ARE Power Sharing arrangements between the parties depending which party is the majority or the minority.
Coveted assignments of influential commitees or panels are doled out on a seniority basis or WHO YOU KNOW withing your party structure or favors curried.

After that the name of the game is to "bring home the bacon" that means getting as much money
assigned in appropriations bills to your district or state as you possibly can for pet projects.

How good you are at this game determines your influence/power you have within your party and if you get re-elected.

Once you get comfortable within this system, it doesnt matter whether you are repub or dem because you are IN THE CLUB...and with all its perks and priveleges of POWER and INFLUENCE WHY IN THE HECK WOULD YOU WANT TO LEAVE?

btw: your screed on obama is irrevelant..it really doesnt matter because repubs spend just as much as dems in the long run, they are just better at hiding it. like i said it's all about how much bacon you bring home.

Term Limits you say..fo get about it...lol

democrats, facts are there enemy
How many democratic presidents have served 16 How many republican presidents have served 28 if the republicans are so bad then WHY are there almost twice as many republican Presidents, and why has there only one Democratic President that has served two terms? while there has been 3 Republican Presidents that have served two terms in the last 50 years?

The information the public receives is through the Media, until the mainstream media is in lock step with society instead of a party, we will continue to get half truths or no truths at all.
The republicans are NOT in the trouble the media would like you to believe, the democrats are NOT as power as they would like you to believe, both parties simply win and lose elections, we citizen understand this and except it as a democracy.

Left Angle
"How are you going to change that?" You change it by voting every non-conservative encumbent out!! You change it by sending them a message that we are not going to live by the socialist standards you seem to approve of.

easlake joe..you still dont get it..
it really doesnt have a lot to do with political philosophy..politicians are voted in or out of congress by their ability to "bring home the bacon" for their districts or states.

comprende?

Right
Isn't it the core principle of a Democracy to let the people choose their own leaders? If the people consistently elect those who support, or at least condone, government programs, is it hard to believe that maybe that's exactly what the people want them to do, hence their vote? Obviously, you're always going to have a certain percentage of uninformed or single issue voters. It's extremely hard to believe that over the last 75 years of policy that was covered by the author that the people have voted for candidates who do not dismantle these programs on accident, or because they were misled.

Americans want a certain level of government and government services. Obviously, the desired level differs depending on who you talk to, but if the conservative idea of limited government was really what Americans wanted, I think they would have voted for it by now.

Lilly: You must be kidding!!!
RE"Never in my life until these recent years of Republican orgy did I have to worry, when I go to the grocery store to buy food, that I would come home with salmonella-contaminated hamburger and fish, or with cookie filling full of some Chinese chemical, or with salad greens that would have us all in the Emergency Room Vomitorium by midnight"

You REALLY think that the GOVERNMENT can fix all this?

Was going to ask you if you were out of your mind? But what's the point, has never worked before.

I know, Barack looked in your eyes through the tv set and personally told you that HE would fix it all.

John @ 1:27
"If you can't "fix" the Republican party what chance do you have of "fixing" the federal government?"

Perhaps none. But I don't care to start a major repair job with a broken tool like the GOP.

"No "destruction" needed. It would simply take a majority of conservatives to elect conservative leadership within the GOP who would then nominate conservative candidates and push a conservative agenda."

If this ever happened, then call it
reformation, evolution, transmogrification or whatever term you wish, but the GOP of today would be no more. The GOP of today wold not tolerate conservatives candidiates pushing a conservative agenda.

"Which parties could call a press conference and actually have the media show up?"

None of them. First the voters show up and elect
candidates from a conservative party, then the mdia will show up on their own

To the rest of your final paragraph, everything you say is true about the uphill fight of a new party and the list of enemies out to crush it in the cradle. But we can reduce the enemies list by not trying to eject the liberals from their entrenched positions of power in the GOP.

If I gave the impression that I think any of this is easy (title of your post), I didn't mean to and I apoloize. It's not going to be easy. But it is simple. Consider the task the revolutionaries had to undertake: remove the British from the colonies. It was a huge task, and hugely difficult. But the goal was not complicated.

What's happening here is that I've put my foot down and said "I no longer trust the Republicans!" while you reply, essentially,
"Hold up buster! There's life in the elephant yet. Mend it, don't end it." Fair eneough - it's
a judgement call. But let me ask, how far leftward can the party slide before you refuse to go with it any longer?

Money Talked and Obama Got - elected
Money bought media time and internet time and newspaper time and TV and radio time - after Obama didn't keep his promise to McCain and accepted campaign donations from unknown sources across the oceans and unprecedented donations. Doesn't anyone remember even anti-American foreigners cheering for Obama in their countries - have you ever seen that happen in our history - even people praying for him in far off and remove jungles!
Obama won because of money and 24/7 media time - the media fell in love & got chills up their legs- anti-Americans fell in love around the world - The mecia said Obama was the first African American to win the presidency, but his dad is a Kenyan and Muslim and his mother is White - oddly, the White race doesn't claim him as White, though - and held him up as the African American which represents slavery, injustices, discrimination and prejudice and the fight for civil rights, but Obama didn't live through any of their pain and suffering
on U.S. soil
So, if Jesse Jackson was crying, maybe it was based on the fact that he'd hoped that Martinn Luther King or some other African AMerican could have been elected vs. a bi-racial man who didn't march for years in America nor suffer through the civil rights movement, but lived a privileged life in foreign countries. It was a fantastic fantasy with all the bling and promotion based on skin color, money, and media and remains an unprecedented pre-election and the most expensive taxpayer inauguration ever. Ironically, after using the media to his advantage, Obama's administration wants to silence and control or eliminate conservative media and those who oppose his agendas through the Fairness Doctrine. And, as everyone knows, there's nothing fair about the Fairness Doctrine.

Left Angle:
"btw: your screed on obama is irrevelant..it really doesnt matter because repubs spend just as much as dems in the long run, they are just better at hiding it. like i said it's all about how much bacon you bring home. "

It is "relevant". Obama is set to double down on the deficit's that Bush ran. In other words, he is spending twice as much at least as Bush did because Obama is also raising taxes over what the Bush taxes were. Now, that doesn't mean that revenues to the federal government will increase. In many cases, raising taxes eventually lowers the revenue's coming into the federal government, and vice versa. When Bush cut taxes, revenues increased. Same for Kennedy and Reagan. When Clinton agreed with the GOP to cut the capital gains tax rates, the economy picked up steam and revenues increased. But the problem is, the politicians on both sides of the aisle, always find a way to spend all of the revenues and more, meaning they have to borrow money. This is a problem and robs us of our freedoms. It will certainly rob our offspring of more and more freedom as they have to pay the massive bills through ever higher taxation. So don't tell me that Obama's spending, and Bush's spending as well, are irrelevant. Obama + Bush = Ear Elephant.

reply to Standhisground #19
I see you've managed to reduce conservative principles to the old argument that if you paid for something you have a right to use it. The point of being a principled conservative is to take a stand, not whine about getting what you paid for.

As for Social Security, I hope you don't think it works like a savings account. It hasn't done that since WWII. If you drew down on the amount of money you've contributed, you'd run out of money in just a few years. Social Security is an example of a transfer payment--money taken from workers' paychecks to pay the recipients of the program. In other words, it's a welfare program. A principled conservative would neither support it nor draw money from it.

As for not paying income tax, I'd hoped that some conservatives would think outside of the box. Granted, many leftists used to make this argument because they were opposed to defense spending, but why not apply it to what you right-wingers are interested in?

Look, if all things governmental are as evil and awful as you guys claim, you should be champing at the bit to stop feeding the monster, which means you also should want to stop getting fed by the monster. Of course, I assumed that folks like you were trying to be principled conservatives, and that was probably my biggest mistake.

Mel @ 2:00 (and something for John too)
http://www.politics1.com/parties.htm

The link is to an online compendium of American political parties, big and small, serious and frivolous. Run down the list, and you'll see several conservative parties. If you read their platforms, they all seem as if they were written by the same drafting committee, with only differing empahases on religion as a motivation. This makes sense, as they all draw from the same inspiration - basic American conservatism.

Taken together, these are the "fractured 3rd party" John referred to @ 11:38. We need to meld
them into a unified conservative party. And to answer your question directly, I began voting with the Constitution Party when president Bush set up No Child Left Behind - find authorization for THAT in the constitution, if you please.

Left Angle @ 1:51
If you're right, then the republic is dead and we're all just wasting words here.

But, we'll be okay. If history is any guide, we have a while to happily eat our bread and attend our circuses before imperial tyranny becomes explicit governmental policy.

Joel: the way I look at it is...
it cost a LOT of money to run the federal government and a LOT of money is going to be spent doing so. Can you actually give me a figure you think is the norm?

what baffles me is that you repubs/cons seem to think that 95% of that money being spent is on things that are worthless and on things of which there is no return for the dollars spent.
that is total bs.

I'll tell you what. I am not economist but I am willing to bet that when Prez Obama ends the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and their trillions of dollars of cost that those deficits you speak of will drop dramatically.

Left Angle:
"I'll tell you what. I am not economist but I am willing to bet that when Prez Obama ends the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and their trillions of dollars of cost that those deficits you speak of will drop dramatically."

Are you sure he's going to end the Afghanistan war? He's building up troops. Pakistan may very well figure into the equation as well. As for Iraq, that war was already on it's way to ending before Obama took office. Yes, it will save some money to have our troops out of there, providing that we don't send them someplace else. We should probably bring our troops home from Europe, Japan, and South Korea as well. That would also save us a bunch of money. Why can't those modern countries defend themselves now? They have economies large enough to provide for their own defense. They need to step up to the plate for their own citizens and defend them.

Federal Spending.
It does cost lots of money to run the federal government, but the federal government has involved itself in too many aspects of our lives. The states and local governments should have much more power than they do now and the feds should have less.

You can't tell me that there isn't massive waste in federal government spending and earmarks. When something gets too big, you lose control over it, similar to a fire. It's great to warm you on a cold night, but not if it gets out of hand and causes you to lose your house.

Bridges to nowhere. Community centers for local communities. Light rail lines for local cities and municipalities. How do those expenditures fit under federal spending requirements? A light rail line in Minneapolis, half funded by the federal government provides no benefits to someone in Fargo, ND.

Interstate highways are a different animal. We can move goods more efficiently around the nation with our interstate system. That benefits everyone. It could also benefit national defense in the case we'd have to move troops and equipment to defend the nation in case of attack.

Most conservatives DO NOT believe in no taxes or no federal spending. That is just ignorant liberals trying to define conservatism in a manner that makes us all look like extremists. We believe in limited and focused federal spending more in line with what the constitution provides them the power to do. We are not really a nation of united states any more. We are nation with states who pay into the larger, controlling federal government in hopes to get a little money back for education spending, roads, welfare, unemployment, etc.

The Kings Edicts

I wonder if anyone else is as sick as I am of every day like clockwork,King O comes out before the mic and teleprompters to tell us of his latest revelation.

He has delusions of grandeur as he makes his announcements. Each one is driving us deeper in debt. Each one drives me deeper into depression.

Since about half the population of the country are riding in the wagon and the rest are pulling it,what happens now that King O is taking away the wagons?

Conservatives need to unite.
Conservatives for far to long have been sitting on the sidelines silent, thinking that Americans love their country and will make the right choice for what's best for the country.

But unfortunately we have a new breed that hates Capitalism and the America we all know and love, and they lust for power.

We've been foolish thinking that no one could sneak in, in the dead of night and usurp power in our country. Not in America.

Well, not only have they usurped control, but this country is on the brink of losing it's identity and it's place in the world.

We don't need new ideas, because Conservative values are just as relevant today as they were two hundred years ago. They are absolute truths and timeless. Maybe we could dress them up a bit to make them look fresh for the young but they will never grow old. Again they are timeless.

All Conservatives need to get involved NOW and stop standing on the sidelines letting someone else do the work and hoping for the best. HOPING FOR THE BEST IS LIBERAL NONSENSE THINKING.
And we need to clear our ranks of RINO'S.

YOU CANNOT HAVE A CONSERVATIVE PARTY WITH CONSERVATIVE VALUES WATERED DOWN BY LIBERALS.

Either you are a Conservative or you are a Liberal. You cannot be both. We can't have people limping along on two opinions.

Maybe the majority of people don't want Conservative values anymore, and if that's the case, well then we've lost our country and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it. But you can't have it both ways. It's one way or the other.

And sitting around trying to figure out what to change to attract Liberals doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of succeeding. Either we are Conservative or we are not.

Courage
The GOP would benefit greatly by following the example of Carrie Prejean.

The Limb
Republicans aren't going to get out on that limb because they know they are nothing but Moderate Democrats. You think it is about SS, Medicare, and all the stuff they should repent and vote against. I totally disagree. It is about if you say you believe marriage is between a man and a woman, then do not vote for Civil Unions or Gay Marriage. If you say you are for low taxes, stop voting for punitive taxes on Smokers, Sugar users, Fat People, and for breathing the air God gave us. And if you believe in America and the Constitution, stop acting like Cowards like John McCai and the rest of the Torture Freaks.

IT'S TIME TO START ANEW!
The leadership within the Republican Party doesn't get it. Here we have a Party who contacts me regularly wanting money so my hard earned dollars can go to people who think it's a good idea for John McCain, of all people, to be running his mouth on "listening tours". A man that, as far as I'm concerned, threw last November's election not only will not go away, but continues to plague the base of the Party with his very existence. Like heavy intestinal gas you can't get out of the room we can't get rid of him! Why can't he, along with Colin Powell do like Specter did and join the Democrat Party. I'll swear, what the Republicans are doing right now is one of the stupidist things I've ever seen. Dear God, it's SO WAY BEYOND TIME FOR A 3RD PARTY! Thinking Americans who still respect The Constitution need a place to call home.

Colin Powell:Welfare King
Just like MOST of the criminals in DC, Colin Powell never worked a single day in the private sector! He was a career Army man after benefitting from racial quotas in college, a policy he still advocates. So, government has been his whole life. It was even his convenient escape from horrible racism. It has always been his refuge. He even advocated its un-Constitutional principles of Empire because it guaranteed him a lucrative job at the Pentagon. He continues to not give one thought to those of us on the outside of government actually paying for the insanity as it sends our country off the cliff and kills his fellow soldiers needlessly. He's just another pimpdaddy who has played whitey - the MAN - just like the Democratic Party which has played his entire race and both criminal parties in DC which have played and betrayed an entire nation.

Reverse It Out
Republicans need to explain to Americans how all of those Bush I and Bush II programs were a mistake and begin the process to negate the offending legislation.

Quit Your Beatchin'
It's too late. You guys had your chance to join a 3rd Party, the Constitution Party, but you didn't believe in them because YOU DIDN'T BELIEVE IN CONSERVATISM YOURSELVES! Now, we hear on Glenn Beck that the Chinese are getting ready to purchase $1,000,000,000,000 trillion dollars in gold from the IMF. What do you think they plan to do with all ofthat gold? They're going to cash in their unreliable poor-returning investment in US Treasury bonds. What do you think other nations bankrolling our debt will do when they see China making its vote of no confidence??? Yes, they will follow suit. What then do you think will happen to all of your bank accounts, and your Stocks, your pension funds, and ANYTHING else thast depends on the precious value of the US dollar??? Yes, THEY WILL ALL BE WORTHLESS OVERNIGHT!!! I'm not playing games here. Chinese Premier, Hiu Jintao, has said before the Chinese Communist Politburo that he has serious misgivings about retaining unprofitable investments in US Treasury bonds curently returning only about 2.5%. He was followed about a week later by the leader of the national Bank of China sayingthat he believes the dollar is too unreliable and therefoire the world should shift to a "world currency" citing a clause in the IMF that does allow this under situations of duress. In the midst of this crisis, all you hear from the MSM, Sean Insanity, and Rush Bimbo is that Nancy Pelosi knew about the torture; excuse me, but what's wrong with this picture???

Gestell
It doesn't MATTER whether at present I support the Social Security system or not, because right now, I'm going to be paying into it whether I want to or not - unless I stop working altogether, and I'm not going to do THAT just to avoid paying Social Security.

In fact, as I recall, conservatives for a number of years have been trying to replace the present Social Security system. It's you LIBERALS who have screamed bloody murder about making ANY changes to the system. If you offered conservatives right now the chance to opt out of the SS system and not have to pay into it anymore and let them use the money they would otherwise be paying into it however they saw fit - but also by opting out that we'd walk away from all benefits due us under SS - a LOT of us conservatives would gladly TAKE that deal. But you liberals will do all you can to see to it that we never have that option.

And it is indeed conservatives who want to stop feeing the monster of big government: it's NEVER been liberals, for example, who have proposed abolishing several federal departments like the Departments of Education and Energy. Once again, however, whenever conservatives propose ANY downsizing in the size of our federal government, you liberals scream bloody murder about it.

DARN RIGHT I have the attitude that if I paid for something, I have the right to use it! It's called contract law: ever hear of it? Actually, though, as a liberal living in Massachusetts as you do, I shouldn't be surprised at your ignorance in this realm. When you have a governor suing a tire-store chain with outlets in New Hampshire to try to make it collect sales tax from Massachusetts residents who shop in its N.H. outlets, I'm not surprised at the warped understanding Bay Staters have about basic provisions of civil law.

Moderates helping liberals destroy
REPUBLICAN MODERATES ARE HELPING LIBERBALS DESTROY THE COUNTRY. NOT ONLY WITH THEIR IRRESPONSIBLE SPENDING BUT ALSO WITH THEIR MORAL TURPITUDE. IT IS NOT JUST LIBERALS THAT SUPPORT MURDER BY CHOICE, BLACK GENOCIDE AND INFANTCIDE THAT WILL ENABLE PLANNED PARENTHOOD TO HAVE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF PROFIT. CONSERVATIVES MUST UNITE EITHER IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY 2010, OR AS ANOTHER PARTY FOR 2012.

The SS Stormtroopers

http://www.thomhartmann.com/2005/07/06/greenspans-fraud-how -two-decades-of-his-policies-have-undermined-the-global-eco nomy/

George H.W. Bush was the first to raid the Social Security lockbox. He has been followed ever since by both Clinton and Bush Jr, who actually told Al Gore he would not raid the SS "lockbox. Greenspan along with Reagan in 1982 came up with a "solution" to handle the impending problem with the retiring Baby Boomer generation. This solution required sharply increasing the SS FICA tax while telling the nation they were getting a tax cut. O, while they cut the federal income tax, they sharply increased the SS FICA tax. How's that for playing tricks with the electorate??? And you guys thought Reagan was a god? Today's Senior citizens paid faithfully nonetheless their share only to have this money STOLEN by BOTH PARTIES OF CRIMINALS IN DC. Of course, if either party ever followed the CONSTITUTION in the first place, we would never be paying this "TAX" in the first place, but such is the nature of servitude to government thieves.

I don't know what exactly has changed...
I guess we have a dictatorship now. The president did this, the president did that...
I'm so sick of EVERYONE telling me the president makes all these legislative decisions and then "does them".
What I believe REALLY HAPPENS is the CONGRESS has their kingpins of each party and they have their agenda and plots, and THEY FEED THEM LIKE WILDFIRE DOWN THE THROAT OF THEIR PARTY'S POTUS PICK.
Then their potus pick galavants around the nations for a few more years till he or she is finally "elected".
Then the CONGRESS starts "obeying the president", which merely means they force their puppet puke parrot to do their will on the stump.
On rare occasions same party perp and mob of perps disagree, but we never really see that 2 second squabble, anything public is some maneuvering for desired effects and outcomes.
No, the potus doesn't do jack diddle, the CONGRESS DOES IT, and everyone is a lemming retard because the split sides of congress " OMG ! can't override a potus verto or POTUS LEGISLATION !"
Yes, potus legislation, that's right, check it out, ALL THE BABBLING MORONS BELIEVE IN IT, but have never produced a document.
Same kookball crudola on the "budget".
Shocking that mr potus dorkohead can't spend dime one. Not a perp here, the majority, believes it.

will, you liberal MORON
The DEMOCRAT congress has a 12% approval rating:
" We need more Joe McCarthy's in our party. (oh, the good old days!). We need more Jesse Helms and Jerry Falwells! Where is the firm, strong conservative?

Let's draft Dick Cheney for president! I know he has only a 19% approval rating, but WE MUST HOLD TO OUR PRINCIPLES! It will send a message."

Dick Cheney would make an EXCELLENT POTUS, far better than any other in MY ENTIRE LIFE.
Dick Cheney knew the facts, and articulated them very well, and never backed down for libtard press or the libtard party.
He is far better than any Bush.
What your problem is will, is you believe the libtard press, like the idiot republicon quacks culling the libtard press polling, and calling for a new communist direction.
A McCarthy nowadays would be so busy, we'd have 100's of executions from capitol hill to carry out. That is just the plain truth. Treason is now commonplace, just like police abuse and courtroom crime by the authorities.
The rule of law has become the rule of asinine enforcement and insane jackboot retardisms.
The commonest response is the captured nazi regimes plea " just following my orders " morphed into "just following the law".
I sure wish we had a McCarthy and a well used firing squad wall.
We aren't going to have that, though, we're going to have the new world of One.
Oh, gee, it's already unfolding, and none of us know if he's even a legal citizen.
Yes, get that much straight at least, none of us can even be confident that Obama is a legal US citizen.

The Republicans should apologize for
BOTH Bush Presidents. Republicans should return responsibility for schools back to the states and local governments. Yes, Republicans should apologize for going along with Social Security (the worlds largest and longest living Ponzi scheme -- that will implode some day, just as Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme imploded). And so on...

Every one of these terrible programs have free market alternatives that are likely to (1) give people what they really want and (2) cost less.

The problem with "compassionate conservatism" is that it buys into FORCED ALTRUISM under penalty of law from the Government.

Americans are mostly kind and generous people. They look to help those in need. People SHOULD get medical care that they need, and so on. The problem is that politicians, instead of trying to offer whatever harebrained scheme (with tons of unintended consequences) that seems to "solve" the problem (while creating dozens of new ones); these Politicians have to learn from Flo down at the diner, to say, "It's not my table."

Instead of seeking power, the politicians should be pushing power and decisions back down to the lowest practical level of government and when government isn't the right choice, they should say so.

Ronald Reagan had it right: Government isn't the solution, Government is the problem.

The Way Forward for the GOP
STRAIGHT OVER THE CLIFF! Thanks a lot for absolutely nothing. GOP-RIP! You had your chance, so now we're back in the business of continuing the destruction you have begun. Hopefully, by the times the Dems have completely destroyed this nation, a new Revolution will insure that neither you or the Dems ever see the light of day for CENTURIES!

LeftAngle
No, YOU don't seem to get it! After the way the liberals on both sides have spent us into the crapper in the last 100+ days, even a lot of the people that voted for O-man are now against him. People are calling for his head on a platter. If you have kids 5 years old, your grandchildren will still be paying it off, if not your great grandchildren!! Check out what a little town in Georgia has done if you want to know how bad it's gotten. google Obamma/treason.

Take Back the Government
LBJ was the first to attack Social Security to hide the expenses of the Vietnam war.

http://www.factcheck.org/specialreports/lies_in_the_e-mail_ part_2.html

Pete
Where were you during the first half of Bush's presidency? Was your head stuck in the sand? Bush came out and said that social security wasn't getting it done and tried to set up a different plan. The dems were in such a tizzy over it, that it didn't pass. And if you are talking about from the start, check out who started this mess.

The Republican's only hope
We need a constitutional amendment term limiting Congress. Thank God we have the 22nd amendment term limiting the president. Now we need the 28th amendment term limiting these good for nothing politicians in Congress. Republicrats or Demicans they are all the same. Let them go back to their states and help fix the problems in their local communities and let's get some problem solvers in Washington that will look out for our great country and not their reelection. That is our only hope.

The Blame Game
It is a weak and dishonest person who will not accept blame when they are guilty. Always blame the other guy.

There are things Bush is to blame for and we all know it. No one denies that he did some things wrong. His failure to speak out when falsely accused was one of his mistakes.

I never heard him or any of his people blame the Clinton Administration for any problems he was left with.

I have heard almost every Democrat talk about the problems they 'inherited'. That will work for a time. That time is past.

Why The GOP is RIP
The GOP is DOA because nobody believes them anymore. They NEVER WALK THE TALK. The secret's out; THE GOP IS NOT A CONSERVATIVE PARTY. A party that has consistently, since Reagan, put up the likes of George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, and John McShamnesty is not one bit CONSERVATIVE in the least. You can try rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic 20 different ways, but your ship is still going to sink if you refuse to acknowledge the iceberg that is today's Conservative electorate that is tracking you criminals in DC like a hawk. Your games with us will no longer be tolerated. That you haven't figured this out since before 2006 is laughable. Looks like you've just bought yourself 40 more years in the wilderness like sinful Israel. Yes, you will desperately try to repackage your garbage like you did in 1994, telling us more sweet lies at election time, but we won't be buying it again this time.
We're now your belligerent ex.

Conservatives, Please listen
All of this article is true but we have to focus. We can inundate Americans with all these knowns and allow the dims multiple fronts to counterattack or we can use the Tea Parties to drive home one message. This one message resonates and will continue to resonate. Governments from the feds on down are wasteful, corrupted and bloated jokes. Politicians that promote this waste, specifically dims, have only one way to win because they're on the wrong side of every issue. The majority of every state vote against gay marriage yet the courts, dims and the pmm (Propaganda Media Machine aka msm) promote it as a civil rights issue. They know Republicans want cheap Mexican labor but their constituents want the border closed so the dims blame Bush and McCain, rightfully, and keep the borders open and will pass shamnesty to improve their voter base. They've used the indoctrination of students to build on bad America, bad corporations, bad Christianity and bad and dirty energy. So they shutdown drilling, coal and nuclear to cleanse the earth and the indoctrinated think everyone gladly pays higher utilities, fuel costs and everything else because all businesses will pass through utility and fuel costs. In reality the country goes bankrupt while the rest of the world chugs away into the atmosphere on cheap energy.

If we use the Tea Parties to bring home this nonsense that Oblaba, Peloser and Harry Fraud intend to perpetrate to drain each and every person's pocketbook we can turn the tide.

With all due respect, TBtG
Republicans will always win when enough people are left with the option of a bigger evil dim with their hands in peoples' pockets and kowtowing to cutthroats.

Indy
I believe you underestimate the anger at the GOP out there. It is palpable. Many stalwart Conservatives either didn't vote at all in the Presidential election or did as I did and voted 3rd Party - voting my Conservative principles and conscience. We refuse to have NO CHOICE anymore or to buy into the belief that our vote does not count if we vote 3rd Party. We instead have made the choice to vote for Constitutional government, the return to which is America's only hope. Any other vote is a non-patriotic vote for the CONTINUED DESTRUCTION of the country. Both of these parties in DC are CRIMINALS - systematically destroying this nation everytime Congress is in session and every time the jackass President walks up to the podium because they both have defecated time and time again for MANY, MANY YEARS NOW on the US CONSTITUTION. If We the People do not STOP THE MADNESS< WHO THE HELL WILL??? - CERTAINLY NOT THESE GODDAMNED POLITICIANS!!!

Colin Powell knew
Colin Powell knew that it was his Undersecretary of State, Richard Armitage, who told columnist Bob Novak that Joe Wilson's wife was Valerie Plame and she worked at the CIA.

Powell knew it was not Karl Rove, Scooter Libby, or Dick Cheney.

Did Powell tell his boss, the President of the United States? No.

Instead, Powell, Armitage and Novak all remained silent for nearly two full years while "bulldog" Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who was told that Armitage was the leaker two weeks into his investigation began, ran amok amidst the administration with repeated grand jury subpoenaes of our country's highest officials during time of war over a 'crime' that had already been solved.

Powell knew this was going on and remained silent.

Powell knew Scooter Libby wasn't the leaker, and remained silent while Fitzgerald grilled him under oath three times, and Rove four times.

Powell knew Armitage was the leaker and remained silent while reporter Judith Miller spent 50+ days in jail for refusing to betray the confidence of a source that was NOT the leaker.

Powell knew Libby wasn't the leaker and remained silent while Libby was tried and convicted of perjury and had his career ruined; while the MSM reporting made it look like Libby was the leaker but could only be nailed for perjury.

It wasn't until AFTER all this damage was done that any of them, Powell, Novak, Armitage, came forward with the truth; that Armitage was the leaker.

Why? They all opposed the Iraq war.

Powell's great and honorable career means nothing to me now. He stood silent and watched an innocent man convicted. Let him join the Democrats. His honor takes second place to his politics, just like the Democrats. He's always really been one of them.

I totally agree and I no longer respect Colin Powell. I've always thought him to be a RINO but now I know he was a closet Dem. He should be happy being "OUT."

We need Healthcare
I am torn between this issue of free health care. Right now I have a job that pays about 45k with free healthcare benifits. But if i ever had to pay out of pocket to cover health costs of my wifes cronic illnesses i would be paying well over 100k.

Personally i think healthcare should be as affordable as auto-insurance. Why not adopt a similair system? Allow insurance agencies to work across state lines and throw out accessive costly lawsuits against our medical establishments. We should also get rid of the lock that the FDA and has on prescription drugs sold in this country. There are many other countries that have similair safety standards, (canada for one). Many states have laws requiring people to have auto-insurance in order to use the public roads or else face a fine, why not have simmilar laws for our hospitals?

Anyone else have any ideas? cause im just throwing mine out there.

Our Health Care system is what keeps this country broke. We will never get an economy that is workable and stable until we do something about the rising costs and the increasing unaffordability for people like yourself.

Here's one example: Now let's extrapolate this approach to other sectors of the economy. As of 2008, annual health care spending in the United States reached $2.1 trillion or 16 percent of the GDP. Most of that money -- about 54 percent -- comes from the private sector. That's $1.13 trillion dollars that American companies are spending on health care each and every year. This is more than the national budgets of France, Canada and the UK combined. If that isn't a drag on our competitiveness, what is?

People without health care are also a drag on the economy. Somebody pays for all those emergency rooms that are used as clinics, most likely you and me.

Good, affordable health care is good for you, for the rest of us, and for the country.

my, my, my!
Let's see, Kathleen Parker, Michael Gerson, Spector, Powell, etc. etc. etc.

So humorous so watch conservatives cannibalizing their own.

Upside Down America
Terrorists/Illegal Aliens Above The Law
In this upside-down world of Obama and Company, the only enemies of the United States are us hardworking men and women who actually support our own families, go to church, believe in traditional values, customs, traditions and the U.S. Constitution of this Great Republic.

Under the Obama regime, we have a Justice Department that believes Foreign Enemies and Terrorists have the same rights as U.S. Citizens and are protected under our constitution, while at the same time this same so-called Justice Department is trying to deny Legitimate Rights protected by our Constitution to the legitimate citizens of this country.

Under the Obama regime, they hand out all Citizen Rights including Entitlments of welfare checks, food stamps, free medical care, social security to tens of millions of illegals who have invaded our country and are driving up our unemployment rates and drive down our wage rates.

It is time that patriots get busy and demonstrate against this upside-down administration and congress who are willing to go to any lengths to gain power at the expense of the citizens and the U.S. Constitution. Illegal aliens, terrorists and other asssorted Criminals are above the Law, and we hardworking citizens are being put under the Boot of these Socialists who are busy undermining the very foundations of this nation.

Neither name you mentioned is a conservative and haven't claimed to be.

Fred
What is the population of those three countries and here? I believe the population here is about equal to those three combined so we should be spending about what they do combined.
What health plan do you think Piglosy and Screed are going to be on? I'll guarantee they won't be on the same as you if it goes socialized. Do you have kids? Are those two more important than them? If they are then you wouldn't be much of a parent. I don't even have to think about it to answer no as far as mine!

Oust Obama and all Liberals
Great Article Mr. Blackwell. You describe it so sublimely how corrupt and amoral Obama, Sebelius and the entire Liberal Establishment in this country are. And, these same Humane Liberals, will sit outside prisons and cry, chant, pray and moan over the impending death sentences of some who have tortured, raped and murdered children, but fully support the torture and dismemberment of unborn children without shedding a single tear for the fetus or for the would-be mother who has lost her soul, and in most cases, the taxpayers are forced to pay for these procedures that most civilzed people do not agree with.

God, help us all, if Obama and his diabolical schemes actually succeed. Obama and his entire administration and his cohorts in the U.S. Congress need to be exposed and removed from office. The only means that, We The People, have to do that is to Unite and Vote in Record numbers to replace these morally bankrupt individuals from office, and for the MSM and their talking heads such as Oprah Winfrey, The Nags on The View, and others, they need to be boycotted and their miserable shows that support and promote these Scoundrels and the Despicable Acts that they condone, will also disappear from the airwaves, and then Oprah and these other Immoral Feel Good performers can disappear into the dark shadows where they belong.

72 IS THE NEW 65
at the minimum. I'm 63, and have never considered collecting social security until the mandatory 70 point 5. it's not that i couldn't use the dough, it's that retirement is not an option for me, and, inasmuch as i plan to live to a hundred, i'd just as soon keep working, along with the fact that i need to.

don't have me no health insurance. i've seen my doc about twenty times in the last four years. SHE gives me 20% off for paying cash, so i'm out of pocket to the tune of about two grand. had i not opted out of my blue cross catastrophic only policy, that figure would be over ten thousand buckeroos.

car insurance - liability only, and i drive defensively.

so my social security mantra (see subject line) is one thing i'd like to see Republicans get behind. Also UNLIMIITED OFF-SHORE DRILLING 35 MILES OUT. (being from southern california as you, my sage of south central, i'd propose an additional fifteen mile arc out from the back side of Catalina)

what else? fifty or sixty new nuclear plants. suck ANWR dry, of course, that's goes without saying.

Feds out of "education" entirely. state by state votes for vouchers. (what would be good for california [my opinion] might not be necessary in north dakota)

pray al franken's kidneys fail before rush limbaugh's. [jk.....almost]

redistribution of wealth? how about swapping whatever non-toxic assets fannie and freddie might have for whatever our private banks would care to unload? (obviously clueless in the whole derivative/mortgage backed securities issue, i'll take this one back...but wouldn't it be nice if frank raines redistributed some of his bonus cash, like, yesterday?)

these issues, and more, in 2010. and, lastly, good Republicans, come together on who's going to take over for the sitting (duck) one-termer in the White House.

Powell's comments
Mr. Elder, your article is right on the money. Where is the leadership??? Where is the voice of reason and the "loyal opposition"? There is none. There needs to be a massive public education effort, but it takes true leaders to accomplish this. We have none. We have only politicians and crooks in Washington. We will never have leaders again if we continue to allow legal bribery in the form of lobbying money. Imagine Chris Dodds everseeing Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac while accepting $120,000 in money from their lobbyists? I truly believe that if a leader emerged who was a fiscal conservative, a limited, Constitution based governemtn advocate, and a person not afraid to leave social and abortion issues OUT of politics (very consistent with a personal responsibility/choice/limited unobtrusive government position) they would have overwhelming support. Colin Powell is a fool! We do not tell our own family members we will provide no matter what. What the people "want" is beside the point, unless of course you are a politician.

Government and healthcare
I saw someone ask for ideas regarding healthcare. Not exactly the main topic of the Elder piece, but I am a practicing physician and surgeon, and I have spent the last six months developing a template for a private sector solution to our current system. With the people I have worked with, we started an organization called United with Solutions for American Healthcare USAH and our website is USAHEALTHalert.org. I have posted a position piece that lists a template for saving what's great about our care, and fixing what's wrong with our system. The goal is first to stop the fast tract rushed socialized medicine bill that Obama wants by July. This will only happen if ordinary people like you and me bombard elected DC officials with NO to federalized healthcare and YES to private sector solutions. The second step is to get the best minds in economics, healthcare, business, physicians, and ordinary people in a private sector summit that could be sponsored by any number of think tanks. They could come up with the details, etc of a template such as mine and prsent this to the American people and Congress. The crisis mode and the behind closed doors planning on the healthcare legislation has frozen most companies and individuals into inaction- it seems hopeless. But, it is not UNTIL the legislation is passed. Check it out. Take action. I am working to do everything I can to let people know they really don't want British or Canadian style medicine. Ask Natasha Richardson's family where they would have preferred she had her ski accident.

If the Republicans think
they can recoup power by moving left (thats what they have been doing) they will find themselves with a new label. "Almost the new socialist party" you have alienated you active base realize it and move right. If you move right you may actually arrive in the center.

ACTION ALERT – CAP & TRADE
The commissars in DC are consigning us to third world status. I originally thought it was out of ignorance now however I believe it is a purposeful attempt to damage America: Got this from the Fishkill Tea party site:

Cap and Trade Bill To Be Voted On By Memorial Day Weekend
Posted May 20th 2009 at 8:34 pm by Todd Welcome to the first blog entry from Fishkill Tea Party. We start off today with a very important action alert from the Tea Party Patriots in Atlanta. If this is not acted on immediately, our lives will be changed forever.

HR 2454 is almost a law. Congress is fast tracking Cap & Trade so we need to fast track our phone calls, faxes and emails. This bill is out of Committee and is being voted on Thursday, 5/21 and Friday 5/22. They want this done before Memorial Day weekend.
