Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

"Does Obama's victory, as a black man, make you feel that you can do anything?" Someone asked me that on election night.

It is a caricature of America that, pre-Obama, major obstacles blocked achievement. It is equally a caricature that Obama's win suddenly creates opportunity that did not exist before.

Hard work wins, my dad always told me. My Republican father, who disdained Democrats who "give people something for nothing," taught my brothers and me to work hard, stay focused, live within our means, and at all times avoid self-pity. My mom and dad always said, "Ninety percent of the people don't care about your problems. And the 10 percent are glad it's you."

Born in Athens, Ga., and eventually raised in Chattanooga, Tenn., my dad never knew his biological father. The only father figure in his life was harsh, distant and cold. His mother, because he made "too much noise" for her then-boyfriend, threw him out of the house at age 13.

So this penniless boy, living in the Jim Crow South as the Great Depression loomed, started knocking on doors. He finally got a job running errands and tending the yard for a white family. One day, the family's cook failed to show up. But my dad, having watched her in the kitchen, whipped up a passable meal. The family let the other helper go, and a cook was born.

Seeking more money, my dad applied for and got a job on the railroads as a Pullman porter -- then the country's largest private employer of blacks. He traveled all over the country, making a mental note of California because, he says, its beauty and warm weather seemed open and inviting, and the people seemed more fair.

World War II broke out. My dad enlisted as a Marine. He served as a cook and became a sergeant. The military ultimately stationed him on Guam as we prepared to invade the islands of Japan, an invasion that never took place because of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

My dad returned to Chattanooga, where he went to an employment office. The lady at the desk told him he walked through the wrong door, directed him back out to the hall, and told him to enter through the "colored only" door.

"That's it," he angrily told my mom, whom he had just married. "I'm going to California, and in a few days, I will send for you."

My father arrived in Los Angeles and went from restaurant to restaurant to find work. "Sorry," he was told, "you have no references." "Sorry, you have no credentials." "Sorry …" He, of course, knew why.

He went to an employment office. The woman said, "We have no openings." My dad said, "I'll sit until you do." He sat in that office from opening until closing for a day and a half. Finally, the woman called him to the desk and said: "I have a job. It's for a janitor. Do you want it?"

My dad worked at that job for nearly 10 years, while working a second full-time job for nearly as long and cooking for a white family on the weekends. He somehow managed to go to night school to get his GED and save enough money, while in his 40s, to start a small cafe near downtown Los Angeles.

He ran the cafe, which provided my brothers and me weekend and summer jobs, until he was in his 80s. One day, my dad and I decided to clean out the garage. We found a letter he wrote to my older brother, then 2 years old. My dad said he feared that if something happened to him, my brother would need guidance:

May 4, 1951

Kirk, my Son, you are now starting out in life -- a life that Mother and I cannot live for you.

So as you journey through life, remember it's yours, so make it a good one. Always try to cheer up the other fellow.

Learn to think straight, analyze things, be sure you have all the facts before concluding, and always (SET ITAL) spend (END ITAL) less than you earn.

Make friends, work hard, and play hard. Most important of all remember this -- the best of friends wear out if you use them.

This may sound silly, Son, but no matter where you are on the 29th of September (Kirk's birthday), see that Mother gets a little gift, if possible, along with a big kiss and a broad smile.

When you are out on your own, listen and take advice but do your own thinking and concluding, set up a reasonable goal, then be determined to reach it. You can and will, it's up to you, Son.

Your Father,

Randolph Elder

Dad is now 93 and, thankfully, still with us.

So, yes, Obama's historic victory makes a statement about the long, hard, bloody journey. Obama makes people believe. Some of us always did.

I loved hearing the professional
athletes talking about how now young black children have a reason to believe that anything is possible. What? Are there no minority doctors, lawyers, business owners or thousands of other professions that are respected and significant? Leave it to a pro athlete to miss the point of the election of Obama and his leftist illuminati ideals.

Great Story!
I think highly of Larry Elder. A lot of blacks call him an Uncle Tom because he believes that the white community owes him nothing but mutual respect. He’s a good family man with great values and sets a great example for the black community. He’s got an excellent out look on life.

His father set a great example for him. It would have been easy to have past bitterness on to his children. I’m appreciative that he didn’t.

Great story Larry.

Larry,
I wish I had had an opportunity to know your dad!

Thank you
Thank you for sharing your father's story with us Mr. Elder. It reminds me of my own Greek immigrant parents who lived the same story and gave me the same advice.

As I watched Sen Obambi last night, I felt vindicated in the principles that have always been the foundation of the Republican party that irrespective of religion, race or economic status, anything is possible in America if you have determination and are willing to work hard.

Thank You Larry
This is my first Townhall post. I have been reading daily for a number of years because the columnists are (usually) insightful and the comments are (usually) fair. I am afraid right now the tinfoil hats are a little tight on both extremes of the spectrum. I suspect that numerous conservatives who didn't even vote are here now venting but I am not certain that it is not actually left trolls making conservatives look bad. This is sad. Larry has written an eloquent and inspiring piece about the direction we should be moving in - toward personal responsibility and respect for personal property and accomplishment. I'm glad Larry is around to help with that needed transition.

God bless your dad, Larry
I bet if he met Maobama, he would kick his lying, arrogant, duplicitous a$$ for daring to pawn himself off as the embodiment of the African-American experience! Your dad has more honor, character and deceny in his pinky than that fraud has in his whole body!

Total admiration for Larry
Just have one minor correction foxfire22..Larry sets a great example for all of us, not just the black community. I think by now everybody would want to meet Larry's dad. God bless Larry

Yes
thank you Larry. Got me a bit teary eyed. It's a good reminder that regardless of race
there are good, decent people in this country.
God Bless your Dad, I envy you for still having him with you having lost my beloved Dad while in my 30's. Give him a hug from all of us, and our thanks for raising you and your siblings so well and for sharing you with us.

Larry's family is not unique

Larry's family is not unique. Many people of all races and background including me can cite their particular circumstance just as harsh and devastating but yet we thrive.

Why? Not because of some goverment hand-out.
Not because of some government program.
But because our fathers did not quit.

Well why didn't they quit? Character is a big part of the answer but so is the belief in oneself that if they continue to seek a better life, it will happen.

One of the problems facing black america and many non blacks today is someone is always telling them they are a victim. That no matter what they do they will never achieve greatness.

If you can convince someone that no matter what they do, no matter what skills they can brng to the table, it will not matter, We should not be suprised if they don't try. Many will even grow up and attempt to destroy the system they percieve as holding them down.

This is part of the damage Liberals have done to the minority community. We may never know what greatness could have developed but ended up spending his life in prision because liberals convinced him he was not good enough to succeed.

Blacks overly dependent on Obama
I always love hearing about your dad, Larry. This is the most comprehensive bio you've written on him yet. I'm glad I have him and your mom on tape when you hosted your TV show a few years ago.

What an offensive question you were asked last night!

The extreme exhilaration blacks are exhibiting makes me think they're falling back into a dependence on one person, as happened with Martin Luther King. The shock of losing that person promoted above Jesus Christ was devastating to the black community in 1968. Oprah Winfrey has promoted that dependence on Obama, calling him "The One" for several years now.

Learning of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's vitriol, and the shocking revelation of how many black leaders agree with him, has lessened my opinion of African-Americans in general. Fortunately, unlike many younger Americans, I've known older African-Americans who command my utmost respect. Their humble dignity generating respect, like your father, may end up being a thing of the past, not equalled often during these times and the times to come. My memories of them carry me through. What a sorrow to see the black community go backwards as they progress economically.

Tide Of Immigration
during the early 1900s brought people into this country seeking a better life, details vary but much of the hardships those immigrant families endured are similar to Larry's Dad's in many respects.
President elect Obama's story is really not made of the same stuff - the story of real family struggles are somehow growing dimmer with time.
Both my parents immigrated to America - my mother as a young toddler in 1905, my Dad as a teenager in 1912. I am the youngest by far in the family of 5 children. But I know their story well and stories of many of their friends and neighbors. Many families had as one of their goals to college educated at least one professional - it was understood that it was a family project - they did it on pennies.
The words entitled or victim were not even in their vocabulary - those words did not exist.
The rules were actually pretty simple -for my father the key #1 word was RESPECT for everyone and everything - including the law, truth above all, no waste of anything especially time, compassion for our fellow man.
Of course our faith was a big part of the equation. I guess you could say we were clingers.
Those were the rules practiced day after day. No one dared associate with people who did not appreciate or respect the law, had immoral or illegal associations. Somehow those parents got the message across - emblazened the rules right into the inner core of their children.
No thoughts were given to government as a source of any type of assistance - none what so ever - that was not even a consideration.
My three brothers all enlisted at the start of WWII. One had joined the Guard and was called up fast - the others could not stay behind.
We live in a different world indeed.

FATHERS
May God bless your father. I grew up in a home without love and I know how important a father's struggle and love for his children will be for the future.

I have no problems with a Black President, I just have problems with the Democratic Party. Ms. Rice should have run for President.

So when your detractors mention the Oreo Cookie to you, You can say yes, you are white inside, with the White Light of the Lord guiding you. Anything that is worthwhile will be a struggle. Anything that is too easy will be worthless. Going up the hard side of the mountain to the Lord will give you much more than a free ride. It will give you the strength to overcome.

Bill Badman, Not always saying what you want to hear, but saying it the same!

PLEASE
As if this makes it all better.

Yes, I believed
before president obama came upon the national scene. Being a black 40ish female, I knew the promises that America could offer long ago.

My mother raised the six of us by herself
and demostrated by her actions that we could succeed by our working to achieve the American dream. I raised my daughters to do the same.

He does not represent the dream of MLK, who said, 'I dream of a nation that will judge a man, women, black, white person by their character, not by the color of his skin'.

He has no characteristics that have any redeeming qualities, and those who voted for him will soon realize the same.

The people I know who voted for him say they did so because they felt he was the right man for the job...yeah right. I know they voted for him because of his color, and his charismatic leadership style.

Thank you, Mr. Elder for writing what other blacks have known all along.

Jindal/Palin 2012

The only thing Obama represents...
...is unGodliness. His hard work, your father's hard work mean nothing without acknowledgement of God's sovereignty.

Yes. Obama makes people believe ...that murdering babies (black babies included) is acceptable...that homosexuals have the right to dictate and infest God's standards for the family.....that associating with leftwing american terrorists can be shrugged off just because he speaks Harrvuud-like, is black, and wears a fashionable tie knot. ...OH....and let's not forget that it is completely ok to steal from the hard working wealthy to give to poor ole me and you.

Go on believing.

Larry Elder's Father
I just read Larry Elder's article about his Father, and tears of joy and inspiration came to my eyes. Wow...Larry's Dad is a real American hero.....as a white ( are Italian Americans white or sort of tan ?) person growing up in an Italian section of South Philly, I remember playing basketball, baseball and other sports with the boys in adjoining ethnic areas...there was a lot of tough games with some ethnic and racial curses, but later on, as we went to high school, we found ourselves double dating with guys who a couple of years earlier were " not of the same ethnicity or race "...guess what happened....we became friends...this was before the civil rights movement...somehow, through time and just being exposed to each other, backgrounds and differences seemed to melt away. One thing which at the time seemed normal to us, and many may not understand...Bobby was a black youngster who lived with his mother, also black, right in the middle of our Italian neighborhood...he was our friend, and one of the guys...of course, we teased him, just as we relentlessly teased each other.....but, if someone from another neighborhood did not treat Bobby with the respect we all expected, we would all fight to protect him...he was one of us....no government told us we had to give Bobby any extra consideration becase he was black.....he was one of the neighborhood guys !

Judge him by his character
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". - MLK

Congratulations Reverend King, that day has come. I judged President Elect Obama by the content of his character and found him sorely lacking. Therefore, I did not vote for him.

For this, I, along with millions of others have been branded as racist bigots.

Mr. Elder, you sound like the kind of man anyone would be proud to know as a friend. Keep up the good work and let the bastards have it right between the eyes every chance you get.

The color thing is getting old
I remember thinking a few days before the election that I was already sick of Obama; kind of the same feeling I've had towards President Bush these past four years.
I know that he says he's an African American, likes sweet potato pie, almonds, water and women faint around him. I still have no idea who this guy is and soon he is to be our President.
One of the five incidents Patriotic Joe Biden says Obama will confront appears to be Russia, so now we only have four to figure out.
I have followed you Mr Elder since I was exposed to you via your TV show. Your color was meaningless to me then as it is now. I did see character and a patriotic vision which you continually share. Your piece was interesting in that I enjoyed the family history and the thoughts of a wise man.
I wonder why people like you and Michael Steele don't get off your "asses" and run for office as two very qualified candidates who care about their country. I'll be able to see what color you are when I turn on the TV so no one will have to tell me.
When you engage in the type of class warfare that President elect Obama did; I'm sorry. I don't see this as any type of victory.
This race nonsence will begin to heal when it's not the first thought........

Yes!
Obama makes people believe that they can get something for nothing, very much unlike your father. Obama is getting something he did not earn, very much unlike your father. Do you think his supporters voted for him because he makes them believe if they work hard enough they can realize all their dream???? Absolutely not! We've had way too many years of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and now comes along this moron. Black people will never become unenslaved if they keep listening to imbeciles.
The democrats now have white people thinking they're entitled, just like blacks. I can't stand to look at him. I despise him. He has lied and smiled his way into the hearts of the New American--a gullible, glassy eyed robot. I'm ashamed of them all.

Mr. Elder.....please....
...gather together more stories like yours & your dad's, into a book, & pass it out appropriately.

What a wonderful way to look at life!
I certainly did enjoy your column Mr. Elder and it is a shame that your father had to go through those tough times he did.

At the same time maybe that made him into the man he is. I wish he was running for president instead of Obama. He would have got my vote. Maybe he could get Sarah Palin as his running mate;-) in 2012

Excellent
Wow. That is so real. Great column. And so ... American.

Scott
Can you guys get over Palin already? McCain's aids say she didn't even know Africa wasn't a country. She's just a hillbilly who got some nice duds, and can go back to home.

excellent article
excellent article.

i was at a mccain rally in nyc when three young girls came up to me and inquired as to why i was voting for mccain. they were obama supporters. so, i asked them to tell me why they were voting for obama. one replied, "why should i vote for mccain, what is he going to do for me.... what is he going to do for me personally". a little taken aback, i replied to her that mccain wasn't going to do anything for her and that she should do for herself, personally. unfazed she responded, obama will do things for me and that is why i am voting for him.
mind you, these were three well dressed girls with cell phones and all of the latest fashion accessories and hairdos at a street fair in an upper class neighborhood of new york city, yet even they were looking for some sort of handout from obama.

thank you larry for putting things into perspective.

Inspirational!
What an inspiring story! We knew Larry didn't need Obama in the White House to believe in himself and in Americans of all heritages. Now we know why!

GROWING UP
That's the kind of life all the elderly had. My parents knew that life also as many elderly still living knew.

Now the government wants to reward people for not working, setting on their fat can in front of a big screen TV, talking on their cell phones all day and the government will take care of them.

Hard work makes a person, makes them appreciate what they have and doesn't expect the government to support them. This election wasn't about race like the democrats played the race card and further divided the country. This country should be about the constitution, honor, respect, morals and life which which was totally ignored in this election.

This is what's it's all about
Every American needs to read this story. When the illuminati of punditry call Barrack Obama a "self-made man," I cringe. Randolph Elder epitomizes the American dream. Hard work (he showed up every day, I'll bet, never "voting present"). Strength of character (he understood that he would be judged by the company he kept, I'll bet). And my favorite, being a Marine veteran: he served his country during a time of war. God bless him!

Beautiful!
Thank You Mr. Elder.

THANK'S LARRY
Your wonderful reminder of the hardships of color bring many of us back to the table...after being the blunt of horrible finger gestures and language straight from hell itself while on the streets quietly holding a McCain/Palin sign (McCain was not my choice in this election, albeit he is a good man), I needed to be brought back into a clearer prespective of what it is all about- there are good people out there and there are bad...may God help us to continue to be the good, Larry, no matter what we face in the days ahead...

We did not need Obama to believe in anything but we do need good people to step up to the plate and fight for TRUTH in a dying America.

Thank you
Thank you Mr. Elder for sharing this wonderful story of your Dad. Your and my Dad must have gone to different schools together. My Dad always told me if you can't afford it, you don't need it. He immigrated from Poland to
Canada in 1914, did not speak English. Unfortunately he is not with us as he would be 126 years old. I agree with the post that would like you to gather more stories and write a book.
God bless,

Thank you
The story of your father is much like the story of my father. The obstacles he faced didn't make him hate, the hard work didn't make him bitter. He stayed by my mother's sidein adversity. He was a model that, unfortunately is not made anymore. My parents never rose to great heights, but they instilled in their children to reach higher through hard work and integrity, and to trust in God.

Subject:Taft
I think it is time for you to go back home-
You got your man- You got your Santa Claus.

Ummmm....I wouldn't pick on Palin though because I think you need more Geography lessons-
AFRICA IS A CONTINENT, NOT A COUNTRY!

Frightning- the dumbing down of America is taking over.

Thank you Larry
Thanks for sharing your dad's story, I wsh I could have met him.

There are many stories just like your dad's, of black men and women who took the worst that Jim Crow could give them, who had every reason to either give up or lash out, and yet they prevailed and came to represent everything that's great about this country.

The frustrating thing is that, with role models ranging from Booker T. Washington to the Tuskegee Airmen, so many young blacks choose to emulate rappers & gangstas.

Inspiring story
I wish everyone had Larry's attitude. It shows how important it is to teach your children by example. Today so many kids are spoiled and in for a big shock real soon.

The Greatest Generation
Mr. Elder,
Thanks for sharing your father's story. The racial prejudice back then sure didn't make life any easier. There must have been something in the drinking water back when your father returned to the States and started his family, because people of that generation believed in overcoming all obstacles and succeeding in what ever they set their minds to do. I really admire those super senior citizens; they deserve everyone's respect for what they endured during those tough times. The thing I have never been able to understand is why the majority of Blacks are critical of other Blacks who have been a success in anything other than entertainment or sports. Isn't just being a decent, intelligent, hard working and God fearing American enough to be respected by all?
God (please) Bless America again!

WHERE'S 'THERE'?
b.H.obama DECLARES, we will get THERE, it may take some time, but we will get THERE!

And where's THERE? Is it defined the same way as the interpretation of Clintons 'IS' is?

If I wanted to go THERE, I'd move. I prefer to stay HERE, where I've been, in AMERICA.

THERE, is not AMERICA. And THERE will be NO AMERICA, THERE.

WHERE'S 'THERE'?

Larry,

Thanks for this. I've been listening to you on sat radio for some time and wondered what in your life inspired you to be so insightful. Now I know.

Mr Elder, Thank you
Thank You for sharing your dad's story. It is uplifting and brought a warm smile to my face today. I did not write such a letter to my own sons, perhaps I will now.

YOUR FATHER
You should write a book about your Father.
I grew up in a tenement, we shared a toilet with three other families, we had no shower, the tub was in the middle of the kitchen. The family had to leave the room when it was time to bathe. Did not take my first shower till entered the Army. Today I am doing great and nobody ever held me back. I would not let them.

Strength of Character
What strong, strong family men the Elders are.
They "get" Booker T. Washington's philosophy of personal responsibility, hard work and commitment.

If there is a positive to Obama's election, it may be this: "No More Excuses."

We are all Americans. No more excuse to divide us into a "black" and a "white" America."
No more excuse to self-alienate by hyphenating oneself as "African-American."
We are all Americans.
Now let the culture clash over values begin.

Larry Elder - Always an Inspiration!
Probably most of the people here could tell stories of hardship. Life is not easy and it was not designed to be easy.

The road to success is long and hard, but once traveled provides riches far beyond mere money.

The wisdom, memories and yes, even humor that comes from a hard struggle would not be traded for a winning lottery ticket by most of the people who have had the experience.

Thank you, Larry, for getting my day off to a great start.

Do You Need Obama to Believe?
Dear Larry,

How blessed you and your brothers were to have such wonderful inspiring and supportive parents. That's where it all starts.

My day, who was white, had a similar story: grew up during the depression, abandoned by his father, he even spent some time as a cook during his teenage years! He fought in WW II and came disabled; his right shoulder was permanently injured to the point where he had to learn to do things with his left hand (he was right handed). He had other injuries, but he never used any of them as an excuse not to succeed or provide for his family.

He worked hard and instilled in his three children the importance of hard work and perseverance. All three of us worked and paid for our own college expenses. I'm sure he would have paid for our educations, if he could, but what a testimony to his ideals and expectations for us. We are forever in his debt for his sacrifice and example; he would have liked your dad, I'm sure.

Black or white?
If the world knows that a particular man is one-half white and one-half black, but looks white, how would he be described in the media; as a white man, or as a black man?

All sorts of questions flow from the obvious answer.

Jayhawk

Larry's Father
I'm old fashioned. No matter what is going on around me, it is God who defines me, not trends, movie stars, Oprah, or political leaders. "They" don't get to tell me what I can or can't do or what to believe in.

I LOVED your "father" story. Loved it and I love your father. My kind of "man", who I can be inspired by. Sounds like a man with a real godly heart.

IMO, Obama (who is not a real descendant of American Blacks) raised by whites had a rough childhood in that he didn't have a father "showing him the righteous way." He was abandoned by his father and indoctrinated by his white family into very liberal views, then further "educated" by left wing liberals. I feel sorry for him, but I don't respect him. He bought the election with dubious funds IMO, and he created himself as a "visionary" for people who don't seem to have a vision for themself or who want to control morality by destroying it. I don't respect Obama's belief system, or philosophy, and as a Christian I can't say I can call him a brother because I don't see the fruit with his views on abortion. A man who understands the plight of the black community, slavery and struggles wouldn't want to also support the MILLIONS of murders of black babies. It breaks my heart, and I'll pray for him to see a little bit with God's eyes.

Yes, Yes, Yes!
Thank you for such a great article about what it takes to be successful in this country. For me, it has been a "100 year" process. Grandfather raised in an orphanage with a grade school education, father who worked his way through college by mopping floors, providing me with a college education and a law degree. It wasn't easy for any of us but the opportunity was always there. It always has been. If your dad could do it, anyone could.

It's sad that so many people (of all races) have been so anti-American that they gave up that opportunity in order to complain about perceived wrongs.

YEA, ROSE!

Ready to work for conservatism?

JINDA/PALIN 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama
Obama is bi-racial he is not black and will not be the first black President.

taft
Don't have the gonads to go after Elder? Had to make a foolish attack on Palin just to post in this thread? You are a pitiful person, shoo.

Obama to believe
What an inspirational story. It should make all of us proud to be an American.

My father was killed in a work accident when I was five and my mother re-married. We were poor dirt farmers and the faimly never owned a home until I was away at college. I worked for a year and a half after high school and saved money to start college. My family did not have the finances to help me pay tuition so I had to work and go to school. I got a part-time job and soon a full-time job and eventually, working at a full-time job, earned a terminal degree. I thought that was the way that all people did it. I didn't think I was different.

Many today want something given to them. If it is worth having, it is worth working for.

Thank you Larry Elder!

Beautiful, Mr. Elder!
Thank you!

karthik,
What a jackass you are. "Taking things out of context" is a LIBERAL thing to do--just like calling a tail a leg by consensus and thus believing the tail has now turned into a leg. You either haven't known any blacks in a close way, or else you are one of the "poor poor pitiful me" blacks that this noble-minded black author fittingly named Elder has just put in their place. Either way, your words of ignorance are deafening.

Thank you!
God bless you and your family, Mr. Elder. I always enjoy reading your columns.

Great article..
I wish you and your father well and would like to suggest that with the wisdom your father has shown he should perhaps write a book for all of us to read and follow. Best wishes and please tell your father, I have always enjoyed his son's articles as well.

Inevitable Disappointment Coming
First, thank you Mr. Elder for sharing this quintessential American story. Americans of all races have succeeded in the face of overwhelming odds when they rely on God, family, and themselves rather than Uncle Sam.

Second, many blacks in this country naively believe that Obama's election will change their lives, and they will now be showered with blessings improperly withheld from them for generations. They are in for a rude awakening. But, with the media's assistance, they will no doubt blame whites and conservatives when their hoped-for utopia does not come to pass.

Larry's Dad
Simply Super.

Your dad got it in a way that the masses do not. What a wonderful Story. Thanks for sharing.

Mandate vs False Promises
I do wish President Pinocchio "well" but can not wish him success with some of his plans.

His personal "success" and what is good for America are not necessarily one and the same.

Any "mandate" is an illusion because it is based on President Pinocchio's false promises which will soon become flip flops.

BTW I am not holding my breath for health care any time soon either.

As a Christian I believe in giving through church and charity and not because the government forces you to give. I am a big fan of free will.

Do you need Obama to believe?
As I read this article, it reminded me of my mother who is now dead. I live in Jackson, MS and I took my mom to a Civil Liberties Museum. My mom, who grew up during the depression, looked at everything and as we were leaving she made this statement. "Everyone lived like this during the depression. No one knew where there next meal would come from and everyone worked hard just to have a roof over their head and maybe one meal a day." It opened my eyes, that even now I work so hard because I just do not believe in failing. The advice your father gave you is excellent. It is the same advice my mother gave me. I was the only child to graduate from college and I worked full time the whole way through. The only difference is that my mother was white. She was treated by my fater as a second class citizen. She was my father's property to do with as he pleased and things happend to her that should never happen to a human being.

My question to you is... Do I need a woman in as president to believe? We as yet have not seen this happen. But my answer to this question is NO!

TAFT: re: Palin
Wow! Palin, a hill-billy? That's hilarious on one hand...

On the other, it's enlightening. Being from the area of which hill-billys are known to occupy, I find it extremely liberating to realize hillbillys aren't just from "app-uh-latch-uh" anymore! They can be from anywhere!!!

Canadian hillbillys! Kenyan hillbillys! Chinese hillbillys!?

Thank you for giving me hope that location doesn't matter and that, one day soon, race won't matter any longer either!

Wow
Everyone should have someone in his past like Larry's dad. I had a grandma who was one of those tireless, uncomplaining forces, as well as a step-dad. They leave you with an internal legacy no government program can give.

You got it, Larry!
Your story is the American story. I won't pretend to know what it's like to be black in America, but as a woman, I know what "it could" be like to be a victim in America. I chose, like you did, to recognize the strong work ethics passed down by our parents, and to go forward and live the American dream. People need to realize that the Dem party will keep them followers instead of leaders.

truly inspiring
Now that is one of the most wonderful story I've read in the last three days. As a minority, to say that Obama make us believe in a dream is rather insulting. I believed in success as long as every day I wake up I am still in this great country. I believed in success because Ronald Reagan believed that WE can succeed. Obama's promise of change is not bbased on our ability to succeed, it's based on the government's ability to provide to those who have contributed nothing to society.

Stories of so many Americans
My grandmother grew up poor in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Born in 1915, she was the youngest of 13 children, and her mother died of scarlet fever when she was just 18 months old. Her oldest sibling was already 21 years old, and she was tossed from pillar to post, as one sibling after another tried to raise her.

She married my grandfather, who was a cotton broker, when she was just 19 years old. She raised my mother and three other children. Converted to Catholicism because she wanted to raise the kids Catholic.

In all the years I knew her (she died in 1995), I never heard her complain about a thing. She was the light of my life.

Larry Elder - 2012
The Republican party really needs to have a discussion about race and the party. While most of us abhor the very concept of affirmative action, and while it's hard to even bring up the subject without appearing racist, we need to discuss how to make the higher offices of our party more ethnically diverse without sacrificing conservative principles. We're going to have to figure out how to market our principles to minorities or we're going to be living in the wilderness for some time.

We (the Republican party) have consistently put out a bunch of old white men as our candidates, since we seem to have this seniority system in the party of "I guess it's your turn, you've been here the longest". It's like we're nominating a pope or something. While most of us don't care at all about race as an issue, we are consistently tarred with the blame of being racist since this has been the usual strategy.

Sarah Palin was a very refreshing change of pace. We need to groom the other up-and-comers in the party too to get some new faces and new ideas into the old white-man club.

I sincerely hope that the GOP leadership is going to take some time in the coming months to figure out how to appeal to minorities. I don't know what it's going to take, but we're sunk if we don't.

race factor
I thought this election wasn't supposed to be about race. It makes no difference to me what color our president is. I do not see Obama's election as a vindication of the colored man's fight for equality in the 60's. I am glad for all the opportunities colored people now have- Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, etc. I want a president who will protect this country with honesty and integrity- I don't care what color his skin is- his ideology is what counts. I would feel the same if we were marking the historic election of a woman as president too.

Larry's dad could have....
...mentored Martin Luther King because he went far beyond rhetoric without groups, marches, coalitions or committees to prop him up.

After all the hype, rhetoric, and adoration showered on personalities, people like Larry's father just get things done and that, with courage, a strong sense of honor, perseverance and determination.

It also sounds like Larry's father didn't buy into the black toxic tribalism that the majority of blacks kneel before today. That alone marks him as a real man, independent of restricting rules that would have kept him on some politician's plantation.

You were blessed to have that particular father God gave you, Larry. He was a REAL man.

Keep spreading the word, and please, run for office soon!

Illegal Donations
I suppose if you are a thug from Chicago, with very wealthy anti American friends sending contributions to your campaign, you could do anything at all. I joined the Nationalist Party and will paricipate in the demise of the ememies who have infiltrated our governmental offices.

Do You Nedd Obama TO Believe?
Larry it sounds like you are minimize the historic achievement that President-Elect Obama has accomplished because of your different ideas about how to run the country. President-elect Obama did exactly what your father told you to do. President-Elect Obama just had enough courage & fortitude to run for the highest office in the land and has now made history. Do you think voters did not vote for Victoria Woodhull( Presidential Candidate) & Frederick Douglass (Vice Presidential Candidate) in 1872 because of their party affiliation (Equal Rights Party) or their past associations (slaves & feminist)?

I BELIEVE... like I think most Americans believe... as it seems your father believed and instilled in you that if you work hard enough and the opportunity presents itself you can achieve your goals. It will not be given to you. This was not an affirmative action election. This was a general election and from all the account NOW being reported from Fox News about the Obama Campaign they just flat-out out worked the McCain Campaign. They made the calls, they knocked on the doors, one panelist said they called him twice and his a registered republican . This was as equal a playing field as it will ever be and a minority candidate won. There was no quota to fill nor did people fell sorry for him. Fox News made sure that wouldn't be the case by call him. in no uncertain terms a terrorist by association on each program that aired in the past 3 weeks. You can deny it but I watched it. And I have to tell you, Fox News' reporting and the McCain Campaign helped me mostly in my decision.

Instead of predicting his failure and the holes in his tax plan.... send him YOUR ideas on how he can improve the tax problems. You never know how your DIRECT opinion could encourage and inspire HIM to BELIEVE.

Respectfully

Michael Thomas

Responsibility
My grandfather came to America from Italy. He was obviously different from those in his community in a small rural part of Kansas. But, like Larry's father, he too believed in personal responsibility and hard work in order to provide for his family and hopefully pass to them a better life. The problem in America today is that there is no context for the word "responsibility". It's a dirty word. Nobody is responsible for their actions, nor are they accountable to anyone for those actions. And thus, the masses are drawn like a magnet to a splendid suit that promises he will be their Santa Claus.

Thanks
Your dad and family's story is what is great about America. As a Hispanic, thru the grace of God, I was able to educate my self and serve my country in the US Army. My culture is full of full of yellow dog democrats that blame thier place in life to the goverment and now have thier savior obambi to pay thier loans off and fill thier gas tanks. I pray he will succeed but he promised so much that I know he cant. Now he mentioned early that he needs a second term to suck all of our self reliance out of Americans. Bend over.

THANK YOU, LARRY. GREAT COLUMN!
(so many fine posts today,too)

TO ALL CONSERVATIVES:

We lost an election. To say the task ahead is difficult would be an understatement. The MSM, now to be known as "The Obama MSM", will continue to run cover for the new president. And that's just a small part of the problem. We got through the Clinton years. I pray we get through the Obama years.

Larry Elder and all the other conservative writers here at Townhall are needed more than ever.

God bless you Larry, your Dad and your family.

An American Success Story!
Thanks, Larry Elder! That's a fantastic, uplifting story, and forgive me for saying this but if you were running for Representative, Senator, or President I would vote for you based on that story. After all, that's what America is all about!

Larry, Great Column.
Awesome Larry, There are thousands and thousands of us who think like you, and admire you for stating the obvious.
Hard work and perseverance is at the core of being successful in this country, and a very important key is living within your means, which I believe is at the core of our current so-called economic crisis.
It's wonderful to see a Black President of the United States in my lifetime and hopefully this will inspire Black children around the world to strive inspite of.
However, a lot of us have already been striving for a lot of years, so this like I said earlier is wonderful, but it could've easily have been Colin Powell had he ran.
Anyway, everybody keeps refering to Barry as the first Black POTUS and I was under the impression that Bill Clinton was the first, which would make Barry the second.
Let's see what he does.

thank you
for sharing, it was beautifull.

Very comforting
to know there are people like Larry and his family and I know there are many. Thank God for them! What scares me are the ones who believe "I don't have to put gas in my car or pay my mortgage anymore now that Obama is president." They are in for a rude awakening - I feel sorry for them but people believe what they want to believe and that's how he won.

Randolph Elder is a Great American
Let me add my thanks to so many others for sharing the story of your father. He reminds me of my own father, who taught me the same things your father taught you, and of many other WWII veterans I have had the honor to know. No matter their race, creed or station in life, they all believed that it was up to them to make something of their lives, and that America gave them the opportunity to do so. God bless you, Mr. Elder, and you father as well.

Be a Maverick
Mr. Elder, the hisotry of the life of your Father and Mother in the past years of this America is one to be held in high esteem. Not because there was an overcoming of bias toward the black people, nor because Barrack Obama has in some way fulfilled a destiny for all black people.

The reason the story is so impressive is because your Father understood that he was not 'in slavery' as his ancesters may have been and as he said in the letter and through hard effort and much God-given perseverence and hope for the future, he too could and would overcome.

There was bias and bigotry then and there is bias and bigotry even today as it has always been in the world, no matter what country one may be in.

I hope that you may never run for public office as that may diminish the strength of your being a 'Maverick', in the news media for the future because there appears to be such a lack of integrity and courage such as yours in the overall media today. Thank you for being a person of integrity and upholding the virtues that your Father, like mine taught us about living and working hard and doing the right things right.

Thank you.

demigod
The demigod status given to obama is absolutely disgusting. I heard a woman say that his election can show black men what can aspire to be... So what does that mean? Thurogood Marshal was good enough? Jackie Robinson, WEB Dubois, Colon Powell, Bill Cosby, Micheal Jordan, Elijah MCcoy, Charles Richard Drew are n't good enough for any person to be inspired? If he wants to be an inspiration to people then he should encourage real change like inspiring dead beat deads to take care of their children and to stop creating kids they can't afford to take care of. In other words don't be like his father.

Mr. Elder: Thanks for your story.
Your father sounds like a wonderful Dad, Husband, and Person. A true testament to the American spirit. Smart. Dedicated. Hardworking. Kind. Determined. This story needs to be told again and again and again. You tell it to your kids and your kids' kids.

The answer to your question is "No." You don't need Obama to believe. You need people like your Dad.

The Headline of your story reminded me of this news piece on TV on 11/4. The reporter told the story of a 97-year-old black woman going to vote for Obama, explaining that this elderly woman had never voted before. I was supposed to be overcome with emotion and impressed, I'm sure, because this lady is finally voting, but I just kept thinking: "Well, it's a shame she's never voted before in all of her 97 years."

Your Dad has not only served the country, but he has served you and your family very well, indeed.

Inspiring Story
I doubt that the young people of today who have had it so good realize that it's the values of hardwork, sacrifice, and determination coupled with love of country that made America a great nation. Sadly that is slowly slipping away because Obama is the embodiment of everything that has gone wrong with America.

Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing your father with us...what an amazing man who set an astounding example for all of us, black, white and purple....

thanks
Larry, it's good for people to be reminded of how things were for blacks not that long ago. It's also good for them to be reminded that some blacks responded to racism in utterly moral and self-responsible ways. You were lucky to have the Dad you did. Our culture HAS improved, things are better than they used to be, but we've added a lot of baggage while making the improvements, and now we have to set about lightening the load on everyone, so that everyone can have opportunity to succeed.

to Larry Elder; fatherhood 1st, the....
to Larry Elder
Greetings,
Fatherhood 1st, the persevering work ethic.
I see that in your father I admire: being a father, being there for you & his family. My earthly father wasn't (I am white, but like you say, that makes no difference). My father (passed away)has a good work ethic but didn't persevere with his wife and us his children. Though I honor him because he was my father & because of Christ.
sincerley,
David H.

ps. I voted for: Life (including those who are just born but are left to die (murdered in other words; four thousand+ weekly in USA) because they as those in the womb are not wanted; Freedom: to speak & believe -which of course lip(b)erals are taking away for anyone with standards that are absoulute & unchanging; & thus for the US Constitution (& Bill of Rights, by the way).
It's time to fly our beloved flag/old glory half-mast in January 2009.

The difference
I'd point out that many white people back then were NOT prejudiced. If every white person hated blacks (as Michelle Obama seems to think), blacks would still be in the same situation as in 1940.

Obviously, Obama wouldn't be prez-elect if SOME whites hadn't voted for him.

Believing
Larry,
You are a light throughout the tunnel. Thanks for the wise and touching article about your father. Every conservative should read this as it enbodies the very basics of our beliefs. I grew up as a white boy in rural Alabama and can relate better than most to his experience. If only today's young people could have a father figure like you were so fortunate to have we would have a far stronger nation.

Chunk

No, no, no
This election wasn't about race. All those Blacks who voted for him because he's black and they thought he's going to save them..they're not racists.

Well, I have a message for them. He's not black. He's chocolate and he doesn't give a hoot about paying your mortgages or your car payments, Peg. He used you all exactly how the Democrats have been using you for decades. He used you to get elected. What's he going to give you? The opposite of what you think. What will you do then?

Do You Need to Believe?
The article put a lump in my throat. Mr. Elder's father and those like him are the silent minority who are the real backbone of the country. The unfortunate part is that the spineless, mindless, and loud majority is undermining the stalwart example provided by this minority and hence the country’s very foundation.

Conservatism, at least the unadulterated kind, recognizes as an axiom that nothing in life is free, you have to work for it; be it a house or your liberty. It’s an individual responsibility. This axiom requires that if excesses occur in any direction then a “correcting force” has to restore equilibrium; such as losing your house if you can’t make payments and losing your liberty if you violate someone else’s. This self-regulating mechanism in olden times kept people prudent and they did not live beyond their means as they knew the consequences. In this day and age of “liberalism/socialism”, caution has been thrown to the wind, people indulge in excesses of every kind, they think it is their due, and, in fact, seek perpetual indulgence from others (government usually but not exclusively), which is nothing more than living at the expense of others. Historically, this has been a recipe for weakening a Nation and its people to the point of collapse and then being subjugated by outside forces, usually physically by other more robust Nations but it can be by economic fiat, such as China collecting on our current multi-billion dollar debt. We then become a sort of slaves to these new forces and, of course, all indulgence stops completely and/or is dictated directly by the brutal reality of the forces themselves.

Larry, As Always, Great Insights
Excellent letter from your dad. Good words of advise to any kid.

Need Obama?
H@&L No!!!! We need more outspoken intelligent blacks like Larry Elder!!
God Bless Mr & Mrs Randolph Elder for bringing this man into the world!!
My Fathers' story is similar to Mr R. Elders', he would be 94 if still living. A black man growing up during the most "inhospitable"
times for black americans, and often worked 3 jobs to support 4 children(no gov't hand-outs for us,baby)I came along later in life when he was able to work for the "railroad"! So when I hear blacks say "it's the first time in my life, I feel proud to be an American". I wish they "all" could "instantly" be transported back to the "1920s"...and see how long these "whiners" would last.
They are not even worthy to "shine Mr.Elders' or my Fathers' shoes"!!!!

hard work wins
I know very little of Obama, but it seems to me that he did not really worked hard himself,he had many associates whom catered to him. I'm afraid that to say this, but when person is spoiled with other people's things,he really dose not value things himself.I hope that I'm wrong.

Please Elder, spare me the bootstrapping
story.

Mr. Elder has cited the story of his father many times, it’s a very inspiring story. The problem I have with Elder is that he acts as if only blacks of his ideology have stories like his fathers in their families.

My grandmother not only raised me, but also eight children of her own. She refused to go on welfare and cleaned houses all of her life for a living. Despite not having much money or help, she made sure that all of her children (including me), had clean clothes, food on the table, and got a decent education. She shared many of the same values that Elder’s father valued: hard work, self reliance and perseverance.

However, where my grandmother may have differed, was that in addition to instilling good values into her children (and me), she understood the effects, and was a strong adversary of anti-black/institutional racism . Because of the racism she experienced, she knew what her children would face in the world. It was because of her experiences that she encouraged her children to get an education. She knew that her children would need an education to survive in a racially hostile America. Unlike Elder, she encouraged her children to work hard because of the existence of racism, not BECAUSE OF ITS NON EXISTENCE. .

Unlike Elder, she condemned racism, and actively fought against racism.

Unlike Elder, she was not an apologist for anti-black racism, and didn’t consider people “victicrats” for identifying and combating racism they genuinely experienced.

Unlike Elder, she understood how historic inequity had hurt and angered African Americans like Jeremiah Wright, and didn’t consider people like him racist or hate mongers for expressing that anger. (In fact on any given day she may have sounded very much like Jeremiah Wright)

Please Elder...p2
Finally, unlike Elder, she never aligned herself with a movement that over the past 40 years has a history of caricaturing, denigrating, and dismissing the culture, history, and experiences of blacks in America.

Need Obama to believe
I would rather read Larry Elder's recollections about a hard working GOP father than Obama's lies about his.

Add my thanks...
to all the others here, Larry, who appreciate and can relate to your story of your roots. I too am tired of the imposition of race into our sense of what is important in those we choose to represent us. Character counts, and character and integrity are determined by one's actions and how they align with their words. Live long and well, fellow traveler. Would that we had more like you to vote for.

Betty
Thank you for lifting up my spirits today. When Whoopi said yesterday that as a black women she felt she could finally put down her suitcase, I felt sick. Of all people to say that after all her success and all the opportunities she has had of course she had to do it for herself, as your father would say, but it is possible to work and get ahead. Just to hear people say that Obama is going to pay their rent and fill their gas tanks makes me sick. Get out go to work quit wanting the goverment to take care of you!!!!!! Again thank you for your article.

Today Show Doing Smear Job On Palins
I have just turned off the Today Show and will never watch it again. They finally did one smear job too many on Sarah Palin for me to be able to stomach, calling the Palins "Beverly Hillbillies raiding Neuman Marcus across the country", something that is so against Sarah's characteristics, it's a laughable smear. But they are thoroughly enjoying themselves smearing the Palins and drooling over the Obamas and are not about to let truth get in their way ans spoil their fun.

They also took a lying jab at the Bush administration, saying they "might have to get their toes stepped on" in the transition, when the truth is that the Bush administration has gone to exceptional lengths to greet the Obamas and make the transition go exceptionally smooth, something that most decidedly was NOT done for the Bush's by the Clintons!

I urge everyone to send emails and letters of protest to the Today Show to knock off the lies and smears of the Palin family. They even appeared to be trying to revive the lies about the Palin baby Trig. I've had it with them. They make me literally sick.

The Today Show owes a public apology to the Palin family. They are embarrassing themselves. I urge everyone to protest their attempt at destroying the Palin family.

Enough is enough.

A great story, but some sad posts here.
A great story, and illustrative of the difference between conservatives and liberals. Conservatives (I mean conservatives, not Republicans disguising themselves as conservatives) have faith in themselves and want only the freedom and the opportunity to succeed. If the opportunities don't come their way, they work harder to overcome their difficulties. That isthe reason for America's historical successes.

Liberals have no faith in themselves or in others; they assume wealth is something that others have only if they stole it, and believe "faieness" means stealing it back. Thus, they are continually angry and bitter, because they are either in a state of envy because they don't have what they covet, or they have been given something but subconsciously know they didn't earn it.

America was built by men and women, white and black, who had the integrity and the ethics of Mr. Elder's father. What a shame that some posters here feel obligated to write hurtful comments about people of integrity. Your Santa Claus with his bag of gifts just won the election - and you're still angry and bitter. How sad for you to live your lives like that. And I have news for you, Obama is not capable of removing your feelings of inadequacy - you need to do that on your own.

Read "The Psychology of Barack Obama" at:

http://colony14.net/id58.html

If I were Black.
I would be ashamed of him because he is good at lying. First I say that because he lied to everyone because he promiced he would take publc funds and he changed his mind knowing that there wasn't enough money to buy the Presidency. Second he has lied where he was really born and it was not in America it was in Africa so he is African in the truest sence of the word. Third his name is not Barac Obama it is Barry (something) I don't know how to spell it because it is truely African.
Finally he really married his wife because he is African and he needed to marry an American to stay in this country and become an American the easy way and that is a fact.
I guess he needed Oparah to really get all the votes he got and that is a fact.

The First African American President.
Mr. Elder:

Thank you for sharing the great story of your terrific father and the profound challenges he encountered, endured, and overcame as a black man living in America at that time. My father was a white man about his age who faced and overcame numerous adversities also through hard work, determination, and perseverance, but he was never considered less desirable or inferior simply because of the color of his skin.
I believe that President elect Obama will be an obvious beacon of hope and inspiration to young people of color throughout the world as well as in America. Of course, it should be remembered that Barack Obama is a biracial man, having received 50% of his DNA from his “white” American mother and 50% of his DNA from his “black” African father.
Barack Obama looks more like his father than his mother because for unknown reasons the part of DNA that controls skin color, hair type, and other characteristics of physical appearance is generally more dominant in “black” DNA than in “white” DNA.
His father was very intelligent and passed that potential along to his son through the part of his DNA that directs brain building. His mother was also intelligent and half of her son’s brain building DNA came from her.

Victoria @ 11:18 AM
Amen, sister!

The MSM continues its propaganda even after the election! You need to understand that these people WILL NOT STOP until all right-wing opposition is gone, not merely defeated.

That's the goal of the left: as it was in 1917 in Russia, the Marxists will not stop at merely electing a socialist American president. They will continue to demonize ALL right-wing organizations and stifle any criticism of their messiah.

You ain't seen nothing yet . . .

Inspiration
Mr. Elder, the story of your father is a wonderful testiment of determination and most important how God can deliver if we trust him.

I believe that the accomplishment of Barack Obama reaching the highest office in this County is a remarkable thing. Understanding the struggles that Black people have faced in this Country should make it (my opinion) a celebrated happening regardless of whether his views/politics are agreed with.

The First African American President
cont.
Barack Obama barely knew his father who left when Barack was 2 years old. Young Barack was raised and nurtured primarily by his mother and his maternal grandmother, and he received a first rate education.
Perhaps the example of Barack Obama will help the human race begin to fully understand that each individual’s brain is built by a new combination of parental DNA, that new individual’s DNA, whose brain building capability is independent of whatever characteristics of physical appearance other parts of that DNA happen to produce; and once built, that new human brain, in combination with the nurturing, education, and experience it receives, develops functional capabilities that are also independent of whatever characteristics of physical appearance that individual’s DNA produces.
In short, the quality of brain building DNA provided by one’s parents matters; nurturing, education, and experience matter; but whatever characteristics of physical appearance that are produced by other parts of one’s DNA are unrelated to the functional capabilities of one’s brain. They don’t matter.
Since President elect Obama received 50% of his DNA from his “white” mother and 50% of his DNA from his “black” African father, it does not seem appropriate to call him “the first black president of America” simply because he looks more like his father than his mother. But having a “black: African father and a “white” American mother would seem to clearly qualify him to be appropriately called the first African American president.

Hope is an active verb
Thank you for sharing your family with us. I love hearing about responsible parents and loving families that are truly supportive of each other and understand the importance of the principles of hard work and self-dependence. I thank God that my family is the same.
Watching and listening to and reading the words of you and others who understand the value of conservative principles is inspiring and strengthening to me in the middle of a world where "Me First" is a common mantra and selfishness has been redefined as "fairness." Despite the disappointment I have felt that a man with few qualifications and questionable character has been elected to the highest office in the land, I have great hope for the future. This, despite a clear understanding that there is a long, hard battle ahead for the preservation of our Constitution and our freedoms.
Thank you for your grand efforts to educate Americans on the value of traditional, common-sense, conservative principles that will bring to us -- both individually and as a nation -- the true rewards no politician and no government ever can.

A Great Story
Your dad is a very wise man and has taught his children well. Thanks for sharing the story. God never said He would get us out of our troubles and trials; He just promised he would give us the strength to get through them. Your Dad is a great example of this. May God bless him.

but by their character.

Opportunity Awaits All Willing To Work
Thanks Mr. Elder for your inspirational column about your father. Your dad was much like my own. It's a story that more Americans need to read. I hope that we have not become a nation of voters looking for "what the government will do for them." John Kennedy would be so disappointed.

Your Dad
Thank you so much for sharing a small portion of your background. You father posessed the character that I wish all people had - both black and white. As a WASP born in the deep south (Savannah, GA) I always thought the black people were treated unfairly long ago. Now they are given every opportunity and so few take advantage. Most just clamor for more and wallow in self pity, living in the past. It is people like your father who are the real heros of our time, not the Barack Obamas. I have such genuine respect for your Dad - and for you. Thank you for your columns, which I always read. Keep up your great standards.

Thank You, Larry Elder!
I think Larry Elder sums up what we Americans have always known about our country and Obama doesn't because he wasn't committed during his youth to American schools and values and principles, but according to his grandmother on video, she was at his side when he was born in Kenya and a citizens until 1981. He then became a citizen of Indonesia per news reports and was taught Islamic teachings in a biblical school because that's they law and according to their law he had to denounce American citizenship at that time. So, upon re-entry to the U.S. - he had been taught as he stated to America that he doesn't want to wear the U.S. flag on his lapel because there are too many countries who believe that "America is an oppressive country" and that's why he didn't support our U.S. military men and women and the surge because he felt we were killing religious radicals who in his opinion was wrong, but I never heard him show any empathy for our U.S. soldiers or make a big deal about them lying in our cemeteries or the 3,000 or more Americans killed by the same anti-American terrorists at 911 who caused the war. Bush didn't cause the war. McCain didn't cause the war. His assoicates who he calls "professors" and distant friends are the types of people who hate our country and kill innocent Americans and cause the wars! Working hard and following the laws and getting an education or not is how people in America make it. The rest get the redistribution of wealth that is called "WELFARE!"

A great and inspirational story.
Mr. Elder,
Thank you for sharing that wonderful story. Your father is an inspiration to us all. The principles that he instilled in you and your brothers are the same ones that my parents gave us. Please keep up the great work. I love reading your columns. If you complied a book of such stories I would love to read it.

I love your dad!
Hard work never hurt anyone, we have 5 daughters and my husband taught them how to work, (responsibility)I thought his father was cruel when he told me about him, his car broke down and when he mentioned it his father told him there was a bicyle in the garage, needless to say he learned how to fix his car by offering to help for nothing at the local garage in town. He now can fix anything and if he can't he finds out how. My daughters are highly regarded by their husbands and employers because of the tough love my husband was taught by his father and he taught his daughters and now they are teaching their children. Thank God for fathers who know and teach their children life doesn't owe you a living. Not what the country can do for you but what you can do for your country. God bless your father and all fathers who worked hard and never gave up.

I'm a believer ...
Larry ... You just became a must read. Great article. A young black man I worked with shared a line from his father ... Son ... hold out you're arm ... see the hand at the end ... that's the only hand you should ever depend on.
My dad's lines were ... You have a good head on your shoulders ... use it ... have a good time (heard just before going to a party). Also ... work with your brain ... not your back. Obama ... will have to prove himself ... he's too green, and groomed by too many political extremes. Time will tell

BREAKING NEWS!
North Carolina has just been officially called for Obama!

So, let's see... what's the tally now?

North Carolina has turned blue.

Virginia is blue.

Indiana is blue.

Ohio & Pennsylvania are blue (PA is BLUE-blue!).

Colorado, New Mexico....

Ok, why bother to post the rest? We're an Obama Nation now! And we all wish the new president success!

Awesome story
This story is wonderful. So many people are looking to one man for their deliverance... yet if each American just took this kind of initiative for their life... and worked hard and pursued to improve their own future and raised their children with this belief and gave the example that your father did... just imagine what our wolrd would be like today. God Bless him.

Will (CA) @ 12:32 PM
If the situation were reversed (i.e., if McCain won), you'd be spewing your usual vitriolic hatred of the right, not calling for "best wishes to the new president".

Will = hypocrisy

First signs of Obama are bad
Obigot gets elected and the next day stocks fall 500 points, today another 350 points. So far that is 850 points stocks have fallen in two days since Obigot was elected. I had thought they had already factored in Obigot's win into the stock market. Buyer's remorse has already started.

Thank You
What a great story, your father is a blessing to all hard working people. Back in 1955 I married a Young man from Dallas, Texas. I was 18, white and raised in California, what a shock to my senses. I understand how black people were treated then, and at that time I was so upset to see how the Southern stated treated people of color. I was raised to believe we were all created equal. I do not fear Obama because of his color, only because of his choice of associations. I pray for our country, that it has made the right choice. Thank you again for sharing the story of your father.

I don't need Obama for anything
Obama is an affirmative action candidate - if he were white he probably never would have run. If he were white and did run nobody would have supported him -- Obama would have been lucky to get 5% of the vote. If Obama were white, blacks would not have supported him. Instead they would have supported Clinton. I am glad that the Clinton's, who thought blacks adored them, got to see how easily they were tossed aside when the choice was a black man.

I have no use for Obama or the people who voted for him based on race. I do hope that the next 4 years are very disasterous. People need to learn a hard lesson and I hope they do learn it. Voting for someone based on affirmative action is a sick strategy and it should never be adopted again.

Example of a useful idiot for Obigot
"North Carolina has turned blue.

Virginia is blue.

Indiana is blue.

Ohio & Pennsylvania are blue (PA is BLUE-blue!)."

Idiot, the entire country will turn blue when Obigot screws it up. Let the mayhem begin.

Mr. Elder
God Bless your parents.
If I were writing America's script, I would have made our first black president someone with your background.
THAT would be something our community could celebrate. Mr. Obama, unfortunately shares only skin color with most American blacks. Not culture or history. It's too bad, but he was chosen for the color of his skin, not the content of his character. Still, people are uplifted and happy about it. No one can deny the beauty of the tears streaming down black faces on tuesday night. Some things are more important than taxes, and that surely is.

I do still have a major issue with Mr. and Mrs. Obama, which has to do with their disdain for America. I am not sure I will ever be able to get past that to respect him. I am not sure what he could do to remedy that. Michelle ought to on-the-table apologize. Not one of those "if anyone took what I said the wrong way" kind, but a real apology. ONly if she feels it genuine tho. Otherwise, I'm sure I can manage to ignore her for 4 years.
I had a similar issue with Bill Clinton (for draft dodging) and was never able to respect him fully either.
Like I did with Bill, I will criticize his policies and actions when I disagree, but I will hope for his success (for all our sakes), will not trash him personally.

Bigotry Not Assigned to Color Only
What needs to be understood about bigotry is that it doesn’t just involve color. It involves differences.

Tall people are discriminated against, short people are discriminated against, fat people are discriminated against, disabled people are discriminated against, poor people are discriminated against, rich people are discriminated against.

Those who either covet a difference or resent a difference commit bigotry against those different. Bigotry does not have to show itself in actions, it can show itself in thought or attitude. My goodness even churches of the same denomination exhibit bigotry over minor issues. It’s not just a racial thing.

I for one am always thankful to see people who can judge on basis of character and look past outward appearances.

I’m happy that African Americans can see that the greater part of America can and have looked past color. It is a great day to have come this far in 70 years.

As many have said; it’s not president elect Obama’s color that I oppose, it’s his ideology.

WILLdrill4pooh
You say:Ok, why bother to post the rest? We're an Obama Nation now! And we all wish the new president success!
I say, why bother to post at all. And, yes, the US is offically an abomination now, just like your home state. Speaking of Queerlafornia, too bad they actually passed prop 8, eh? Looks like you'll have to marry your husband somewhere else.

Great story, Larry!
Thank you for sharing such a personal part of your life! If your father's wisdom were heeded by all, that would be change I would believe in!

Excellent--
Larry Elder once again writes an excellent column that proves what hard work and a solid family can accomplish.
My wife and I are the grandchildren of Skandinavian and Russian peasant immigrants who had to work very hard to feed their large families as nothing was given to them (they knew this before coming to America) so they along with many other immigrants raised their children to always be truthful, never quit, work hard, and nothing is free, so they had to take care of themselves and families.
If more people were like them and Larry's family there would be no "need" for imported and illegal workers. More people would be self reliant, have more solid families, and I believe that we would be in much better shape financially as a country.

Thank you, Mr. Elder,
for sharing such a beautiful story. What a great role model your dad was for you! If more Americans of all races lived life the way he did, I can only imagine how much greater our country would be.

HISTORY WAS MADE
YOU KNOW AS A FORTY-THREE YEAR OLD AFRICAN AMERICAN I ACKNOWLEDGE THE HISTORICAL ASPECT OF THE ELECTION. KNOW AS A CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE: DRUG FREE, DEVIANT FREE, DISEASE FREE, DEBT FREE, ABSTAINER FOR CHRIST. HE IS THE TOTAL OPPOSITE OF WHAT I WOULD EVER LOOK FOR TO HOLD ANY OFFICE OF PUBLIC TRUST. HERMANN STEELE OR JC WATTS ARE TWO AFRICAN AMERICANS I WOULD BE PROUD TO VOTE FOR. THE TEXAS SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICE JEFFERSON IS ANOTHER QUALIFIED CANDIDATE IN MY BOOK. WELFARE, NANNY STATE PROVISIONS, NO PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

Only black is beautiful
"I’m happy that African Americans can see that the greater part of America can and have looked past color. It is a great day to have come this far in 70 years".

It's a very one sided looking past color as whites split their votes between the candidates. African Americans voted over 96% for someone many of them would not have given the time of day to if he didn't pass for black. His ego unmatched by any accomplishment, his unwholesome mentors, his coasting upward with white help every step of the way while pretending that he suffered discrimination, his not knowing how many states there are in the country he wished to govern, nothing trumped the color of his skin with the black community.

A society with blatant racial bias expressed as "black is beautiful" with concomitant denigration of whites such as Obama expressed toward his own grandmother when trying to excuse Reverend Wright is far from a post-racial society.

Elder's Article
Wonderful story, that is inspiring. You were very luck to have such a wonderful Father as a role model. It sounds as the acorn didn't fall far from the tree.

Do You Need Obama To Believe?
Mr. Elder:

Your story ROCKS! Aside from being uplifting, it was also interesting. Interesting that your dad chose CA in the mid/late 1940's.

Val E. Forge.

Larry Elder hits the nail
on the head with this story. If more Americans were like Larry's father and believed that hard work and good morals will pay off, this country would be in a lot better place. Instead, we've got too many like Obama and his leftist illuminati cronies who think that the government should be involved in every aspect of our lives and should take care of all those poor souls who need a handout.

Whoopi Goldberg
apparently opined that she's always felt American, but only now feel she can unpack her bags. Meaning, I take it that she has felt an outsider in her own country (in spite of it being one that has given her considerable opportunity). So I guess it was whites who made her feel an outsider. Or maybe being the minority. Asians have not complained of that, but perhaps they feel it too. Apparently until barak's election, many others felt the same way.

I'd say to them now: time to either unpack the bags, or pack them for good.

Role Reversal
Do you think if we were about to inaugurate the first female Vice President we would be reacting like the Democrats? Sadly, no. We would probably still be cleaning up broken glass and towing the overturned, burned cars from election eve. Fortunately we don’t behave like spoiled children throwing violent temper tantrums when we don’t get what we want.
I reject the Democrats premise that I should be happy simply because a black man has been elected President. I would feel exactly the same if Gore, Kerry or Clinton were elected. I do wish him the best, and I will support him until he no longer earns my support.

Mr. Elder: My Father was a Democrat
and he worked hard raised a family and instilled in us morals and values.

you stated:

"My Republican father, who disdained Democrats who "give people something for nothing."

I find it really hard to believe that your father said that. I think youre lying thru your teeth. I totally resent your implication that if you are a Democrat that you "dont work hard or dont have any morals"..that is total bs..

This so typical of repub/con arrogance and the exact reason you got your arses handed to you on nov 4, 08 and why THE GOP IS OUT OF POWER.

Mr. Elder - my hero
Thanks, Mr. Elder, for such an eloquent living illustration of the American way: land of the free and home of the brave. I am an immigrant from China. Have lived in this great country for over 40 years. I am not blind to the flaws of the country. Like your dad, I too had suffered through racial prejudices. Also like your dad, I never complained, but instead believed in the goodness and generosity of most Americans. My wife and I made our living through hard work and perseverance, and have been rewarded for it. Therefore it grieves our hearts to see a new generation of immigrants that have picked up the 'entitlement' mentality. The overwhelming support of the Asian community for Obama amazed me tremendously. We have fled totalitarian and confisticatory governments to seek freedom and opportunity, only to vote for the same type of government in America? I wish you would publish your article nation-wide, for all minorities to read and to learn the truth about what made this nation such a desirable place to live. Thanks for the inspiration and candor. I thank God for you and people like you. Perhaps there is still hope for America?

Palin Is Your Better!!!
Taft:

You didn't have to say it. Your comments let us all know you are from California...most simpletons are. Just remember this, you moron. Palin has accomplished more in her short lifetime than you ever will, and she did it while raising a family too. She is, also, more man than you will ever be. So, go crawl off into your latte-drinking crowd and leave the real accomplishments in the country to the intelligent and energetic.

So Brian..you think
that if Sen. Obama had lost that election the other night that black people would've rioted?

Evidently you do because you just stated it.

So in other words in your opinion black people are not a civilized as whites?

yes or no?

you also state you reject "the democratic premise" that you should be happy just because a black man was elected?

Can you please provide a quote of one democrat who has stated that.

Respect Mr. Elder
nothing but respect, thank you for sharing this story. Please express my heart felt wishes for much more longevity to your father.

Kindel
As a white, I can only speak for my self and what I observe of the races. I agree that far more blacks seem to hold resentment toward whites for the past than whites hold bigotry toward blacks as in the past.

But, as to why, your guess is as good as mine.

Blacks have far more opportunities today than they did. There’s really no reason for a black who wants to apply themselves to fail in today’s culture.

There’s no doubt that entitlements have hurt in the area personal responsibility of all races, black or white, to obtain independence.

I attended college where grants were handed out to blacks and whites alike. They enrolled every semester in the same classes to receive there grants, black and white. So, is it a black thing only or a white thing only, or a low income thing that develops that sort of character?

People tend to point figures at a particular race when race has less to do with it than social issues.

There’s no question that blacks were discriminated against from say the 1800’s to the 70’s. But, that is history. My best friend in high school was a black Haitian. That was in the early 60’s. My parents were raised during that period when blacks had separate doors and fountains. I don’t really know how they felt toward my friend. He was welcome in my home, he eat at my table. I visited his home often. I never thought of him as black.

Anyone white person today that looks back on those times in the 50’s and 60’s can see how really stupid the stupid the culture was to have such policies.

To cut to the chase, I treat black with mutual respect. I do not owe any black for what my ancestors did. I resent being made to feel like I owe anybody for the plight my ancestors put them through. It’s time to get own with life and by all that you can be.

Thanks Elder
Mr. Elder this was the most touching article I have read today. This is an awesome story. I as a black male (who did not vote for Obama) have said the same thing. My parents always believed in me. They always said I could do anything I put my mind to. And I have and there is no looking back. Again..thank you.

role model
What an inspiring story....you are blessed to have such a strong family...
Too bad the first black pres doesn't have the same ideals ... I can't watch the news on tv..self imposed ban until sometime after January.....

Wow!
What a beautiful story! Those who seek "equality" will never find it since people are not all "equal". For every person with an IQ over 100 there's another one with an IQ UNDER 100! No matter how good the role models (e.g., Barack Obama) a lack of personal accountability will continue to keep most from truly bettering themselves. Larry's dad's values were what made him successful and not blaming anyone or anything else for a lack of success.

I hope that people who feel that "they don't have a chance" will accept the true value of EDUCATION, HARD WORK, and PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY in creating such a wonderful outcome!

Cause and Effect
The American electorate has spoken and our adversaries are lining up to test our resolve as a nation. We already know Obama will isolate the fragile government in Iraq. Israel will now be forced to take military action in Iran within the next thirty to forty five days because an Obamaized U.S. will not take the appropriate action to stop the Iranian nuclear program from producing a bomb. Iran has already declared that once in possession of a bomb it will be used on Israel. At $500 for a barrel of oil the price at the pump will probably settle around $18 to $20 a gallon. Unfortunately all of us will pay the price for the incredible ignorance in global affairs the American electorate has displayed.

Good Grief! How Stupid Can You Be?
Larry, from NJ:

I demand you tell me how Fox News accused B. Hussein Obama was a terrorist! I am accusing you of being a lying SOB!!! It never happened. Stick to the facts! I will say, the facts are that Obama has not yet provided a valid birth certificate and I am a member of an organization which is sueing him in court for a VALID copy of his birth certificate. It seems you and your ill-informed liberal friends have elected a muslim imposter who is also an ADMITTED Marxist. You prove me wrong. Obama refuses to provide a valid birth certificate. And as far as you being a Republican? No fing way. You are an ultra-liberal plant who is as easy to spot as dogcrap on a carpet. Go to another website where the liberals are easier to fool!!!

The truth about reaching goals
Thank you. As a seventh generation Californian I can attest to the fact that it is one of the least racist states in our union. I have friends of all races and religions and we all get along with respect and enjoyment. I am treated with this same respect as I give it to others and it shows in my eyes when I greet each new person I meet. Hardwork is the key and doing your own research and making up your own mind with your logic from the facts you have gleamed is so important. We all must think for ourselves and not be blindly led my others especially the biased media. Thank you again for you uplifting story of your families journey. It is indeed insirational for all.

"Obama Nation" ?
Ok, why bother to post the rest? We're an Obama Nation now! And we all wish the new president success!

Will,

This is the United States of America. We are not and never will be an Obama nation. This election just proves the old saying "you can fool all the people some of the time"..but neither Obama or you have fooled me. You are in for a terrible ride. Let's see what you have to say in a year from now, you goose-stepping moron.

Response to LeftAngle
Left Angle-
Please show me where I said "Black people would riot." You can't, because I didn't. What I did say, and still believe, is that Obama supporters, remember that not all Obama supporters are black, would have caused destruction. The reason I think that, is because the left does it all the time. Seattle, both conventions, IMF meetings, etc.etc. If they don't get their way, they break stuff.

Role Models
Your Father is an inspiration too us all. His never say die attitude is what all of us should aspire to. Jeremiah Wright’s message that my failure is someone else’s fault is shown up for what it is – garbage. Keep up the good work & take care of Him. Run for office and we will have a “real” role model to look up to.

Brian's comments
Left Angle:

Let me answer for Brian, if I might. I believe that if Obama had not won, the FAR LEFT LEANING LIBERALS (including some blacks) would have rioted everywhere. Why? Because I have seen it a lot. How's that for an In-Your-Face answer. You don't intimidate me at all. Go find a smaller sandbox to play in so you might intimidate someone.

felks/brian: Ignorance Is Bliss..
to think that "obama supporters" would have rioted had he not won is absurd. A statement like that is born out of pure ignorance, which makes it unsurprising that you would think something a stupid as that..lmao

Brian one more thing..
you stated it is a "democratic premise" that
"you should be happy just because a black man was elected potus"

can you please provide a quotation of any democrat that has said that?

Today's Irony
The story of your father's struggles & determination literally sent chills down my spine. Praise God that things truly are easier for minorities today. The irony is that although conditions are so much better the complaints are more numerous and louder than ever.

Conservatives of Townhall.

The most left-wing administration in the history of our nation will soon will be in place.

With the congress and the media willing to assist, nothing stands in their way. Under the leftist agenda, conservatives will be attacked like never before.

The left and their plan for America, land that they hate, is coming shortly. The plan? Change America into a weak, secular and socialist country. It's been their plan from Day One. It begins in two months.

Obama supporter wouldve rioted?
had he not won...funny thing I just did a google search and guess what? practically every artile was very "specific" about WHICH OBAMA SUPPORTES THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT. TO WIT:

"Some worry that if Barack Obama loses and there is suspicion of foul play in the election, violence could ensue in cities with large black populations. Others based the need for enhanced patrols on past riots in urban areas (following professional sports events) and also on Internet rumors."

Thank you!
Thank you for your article, that is exactly I feel and I don't need a hispanic president either to believe in myself. I commend you on your great upbringing your father gave you which is what every American should be opportunity has always been there.

Josephine Anita Gutierrez-Lehman

hey left angle
this hardly seems like a right wing website:

http://know4life.blogspot.com/2008/10/police-fear-riots-if- barack-obama-loses.html

These people believe that an Obama loss would simply be the result of a stolen election, so they would take over the white house until the election were overturned.

Will, I'm amazed at how well you type while bending over and holding your ankles.

Obama will take from you
I listen to you ea day on the way home from work

Looks like I'll be working for those who don't soon. I'll have to pay for others' healthcare and as my taxes are raised they'll take my money to 'spread it around'

Obama is the next Jack Kennedy That's what that idiot Dean said today

JFK lowered taxes, pal- Dean you are a mess

Thanks for tribute to your father
The moving words about your father are much appreciated.

My father worked at hard labor all of his life. He was out of a job just before Christmas when I was 13 years old. He took whatever job was available which turned out to be cleaning pens at a livestock auction yard. It was cold dirty work but my father always believed in giving his best for a day's wage.

I still recall the picture of my father cleaning the slop out of the pens in the cold rain. My father was not much for words but his actions spoke loud and clear.

LARRY ELDER AND HIS DAD
Thank you, Larry, you brought tears to my eyes,

Your Dad Is An Amazing Man!
Mr. Elder:

The story about your father truly touched my heart. I cannot begin to imagine the indignities he must have endured in his lifetime. From one man to another, would you please tell him how sorry I am for the way he was treated and how happy I am that he had the guts and the courage, and perseverance to never, ever, ever, ever give up! He is a role model to all of us, regardless of what our ethnicity may be!

He reminds me very much of my own father who gave me much of the same advice yours gave to you, although my father never suffered the same treatment! My dad passed away in 1999 and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him and remember something that he taught me!

If only our public servants had half as much class and character as our mentors, we would be in much better shape in this world, wouldn't we?

I am a fan and watch you every chance I get. "Keep on keeping on" with your messages!! You are making a difference in the world.

Sincerely,

Jack Minnier

Truly grand...!

What an inspiring article on the power of determination locked onto a moral compass.

Thank you for writing this and cudos to your precious, learned father!

Daniel

Sad for Obama....
that he did not have the Father you did, Mr. Elder. Your Father is a role model for the next generation and generations to come, and your life is a true reflection of the influence he had on you. I am truly afraid of the politics Obama expouses - things he learned from the wrong associates he used as substitutes for an absent father. I absolutely abhor his politics, but I sincerely hope President-elect Obama learns who to look to for guidance. I want him to be a success. I hope he meets up with you or reads your column.

Obama's First Order

All white republicans report to the cotton fields for orientation.

(this is fun)

Employment office
Why didn't Larry leave the unemployment office as soon as they said they had no jobs? Sounds like Larry's dad didn't accept the discrimination and stood his ground... for a day and a half. He didn't just move on and overcome he stood his ground.

Finally! A Black Role Model!
I'm still wondering why Justice Clarence Thomas, General Colin Powell, and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice don't count as black role models -- except, of course, for the fact that they left the Democrat plantation.

And, by the way, why isn't anyone pointing out the fact that Obama is actually our second black President? Maya Angelou, our former U.S. Poet Laureate, declared Bill Clinton to be our first. And she would know, right?

Anne on a Mouse (TX)
It's amazing to me that most blacks despise other blacks who have become successful in various fields (Thomas, Rice, Crosby etc.), yet they hold up a black sleazeball Chicago politician (financed with white money) as a hero.

Maybe some black will comment and explain all that.

Anthony Thomas
Let's see..,we have an absolutely beautiful column written by Mr. Elder. his father is a true American Hero. His story is the story of this country!

And then....,we have Anthony Thomas spewing his idiocy. So sad.

Mr. Thomas...,I have a feeling that you are one of the total voting disgraces who cast your vote to reelect the likes of John Murtha. Shame on you!

Man Of Character
Apparently, some our trying to represent Larry’s dad to be someone without feelings or pride. I’m sure that it hurt him to be treated the way that he was treated.

The man fought for this country in World War II. All that he wanted was to be treated with mutual respect. He wasn’t asking for anything unreasonable.

It probably made him mad enough bite nails and spit bullets. What really shows his character is how he handled it, and the character that he developed in his children.

Wonderful father.

Wonderful tribute to your father
Your father is a true inspiration. and you are too, Larry.

I too agree that you and Michael Steele should run for office, but who would want to put their families through the hell you would have to go through.

as far as Palin not knowing certain things, lets see, Obama said he's been to 57 states, with one to go. He said Iran was a tiny country that wasn't dangerous, He said we should all help the least of us, but he gives about %1 to charity, nothing to his brother and doesn't know his aunt, whom he lauded in his book, was living in the slums and is an illegal alien. He's so smart?

As far as the remark that Obama ignores skin color, obviously he doesn't. In fact he was the first one that brought it up and continued to do so, through his whole campaign. To say he is a uniter and a different kind of politician is certainly not true. "Bitter Americans, clinging to guns/religion, our soldiers are bombing villages and killing civilians" Yes, cumbiya.

Some of Martin Luther Kings own family did not vote for Obama, because they knew he was not the man for the job.

I did notice as I watched some of Obama's speech the other night, You'd think someone that has just made history and is now the most powerful man in the world, would show a little emotion, a little passion. But he did this speech the same way he has done them all, in monotone, almost the same words as he has spoken day after day.

And today I actually heard some of the MSM asking about his substance, "who is he really?" I was shocked, but I believe this is only the beginning. Though I didn't vote for him, I pray that he does well. But no matter what happens, I believe America will be ok, because, we are America.

Bless Your Dad
My dad was so much like that too. He grew up in Oklahoma during the dust bowl years. During the depression he would have to go stand in soup lines with his family. He enlisted in the Marines in WWII and was wounded in the Pacific battle. He came home and raised 8 children on hard work doing carpenter work and running a small farm for our own food and a little money. He taught us to be self sufficient. He hated the depression years. To him it was humiliating to stand in the food line like a beggar. It was a haunting memory to him that he vowed he would never have to do that again no matter how poor he was. He remembered having to wear overalls all the time and saw them as beggars clothes and he would never allow us children to wear overalls. When the government steps in and takes over our lives and the basics of living we become slaves to them and have no pride in our own lives.

Re: Muslim Upbringing??
Ever read the Koran? Well, one of the pillars of Islam is that you can lie to infedels!! Guess what, we are all infedels, and guess what Obamrxist did during the campagn and he will do as a president!!! Oh, it will be ok becuase he is a Dem. so do think the media will try to find out any truth to what this clown will say the media has'nt yet and they will not start in the future. Sing Heil!!!

Dressed for Success
One can be dressed for success or one can be raised for success. Larry was lucky enough to be raised for success. I'm going to print out this story and save it for the next time I'm talking to a "victim" who isn't getting what he/she is "entitled" to.

Fortunate are the children raised the way Larry was. What a wonderful, wonderful story. Thank you, Larry.

Obama supporters are ignoramuses
The best example is what I witnessed yesterday. I work with a young graduate, age 22. Yesterday, as he was celebrating Obama's victory, I said they will announced "Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama." He looked at me and said "Is that his middle name?" I was shocked. Here is a college graduate with an engineering degree who graduated at the top of his class, voted for Obama, and doesn't even know the man's middle name. Not knowing a President's middle name is nothing new. But, how can anyone who has watch one minute of the news not know his middle name, as much as it has been mentioned? My point is the supporters of Obama has no idea who they voted for, total ignoramuses.

The US has become insane
I don't know what started this, perhaps Wright and Phleger added something in the US water supply, but the general population in this country seems to be mesmerized to elect a black president. The blacks want a black president because of their racism but whites are crawling on their hands and knees begging for a black to vote for for president.

Did it ever occur to you people that the founding fathers gave us a vote to use for our best judgment and best interest of our nation? They never intended citizens to sit around and say "my black is better than your black."

You idiots who think you have to vote for a black because you can't find a way to relieve your guilt ought to do two things.

1. See a psychiatrist about your guilt problems since they are very serious and are affecting the nation in a dangerous way.
2. If you that does not work then have the sense to disqualify yourself from voting -- you are abusing your privilege.

Donald @ 11:15 PM
Well said!

Face it, there are a LOT of stupid people in this country. Some are stupid because they're too lazy to become smart. Some are stupid because their brains are wired wrong.

And some are stupid because it just felt so good to vote for Obama and that's what it's all about anyway . . . feeling good.

Blessing
You have a President who will try to put his socialist agenda in place at a time when the economy is not capable of recovering for several years. The Obama administration will make the Carter presidency look like prosperity. The hope will be just that, hope. The change will never come. After four years of suffering, the nation will have seen enough of the socialist experiment and will be ready for a conservative President. If McCain had won, we would get socialist lite, the worst kind because people would not have to go through the intense suffering they would see under an Obama administration, and most likely would give him another term. So, this is a blessing in disguise.

Great Story
I really enjoy when Larry Elder talks about his dad. I lost my dad when he was 92, in 2004. I'm glad such an emancipated and independant black man as Larry's father is still here to inspire us.

Fathers
Larry, I too love your stories about your dad. I wish more than anything that more children would get the message you received growing up. It is the greatest gift a parent can give and those words last forever.

True Healing
All of this talk about Obama being black-wow I didn't know that!! My eye sight has been bad and just now coming back. I mean I was a bit surprised that so many African Americans would vote for any particular candidate and now I don't want to think that it was because he is black, was it? I figured with a name like Obama he was Irish but honestly I never really cared what he looked like, I only care about what he stands for. I can not see much possitive comming from the most liberal Senator or someone who spent less than two years achieving such a "proud title"

You see, my point is lets get real and really start having an honest conversation about racism in America without others labeling us as racists because we are pointing out that racism is alive and well amongst all groups of distiction and when we isolate a particular group from having to confront thier part because we rationalize that they, given thier forefathers' experiences, we are doomed to rationalize thier racism while at the same time condenming our own!!

We are not doing anyone any favors untill we all take responsibility for this time bomb!!

Thank you
I just wanted to thank you for sharing your fathers letter with us. It was beautiful and touching.
You can always tell how someone was raised and what kind of household they came from by their manners and values.

Beautiful Heritage!
Thank your for the beautiful story honoring your father and grandfather. We need to hear and teach our kids storied like this!

Re: Thank you
I also wanted to add that I have been reading your articles for quite some time now but I signed up for the first time on Townhall.com to make a comment because of your story.
It was simple and yet, it sumed up everything.

What a treasure your dad is.
How can someone who had to endure those injustices have a better attitude than many people who have only read about it?

I kinda know ,at least partially, why but it's still a testament to a man who had his priorities straight. Wonder what he could have done if he had had all the opportunities he deserved.

I hope he realizes what an extraordinary person he is. I hope you are constantly telling him so.

Very touching
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I could not control my tears. What a great Dad you have.

WTF
So Mr Elder what is your point and who are you talking to. My parents and many other Black parents told their children the same mesage.

I don't beleive it has anything to do with what political party you belong to.

.........................................
I really beg to differ with both of you. It has everything to do with Party.
I am White, but German/English and only a 1st Generation American. I understand to some degree what Mr. Elder and blacks feel.
1) I am not a 'true American'both say, hel if your not an American Indian, neither are any of you, you are all immigrants, just like me. Only you've lived here longer.
2) I'm a Republican and I tell everyone I meet that is my party. Dems look at me like I walked through the WRONG door!
3) I graduted the school of life in 1968 GED in the Army, not because of parents or life style, Public schools bored me to death, and private schools where just snobs or worse snobby asses'!
4) Everybody is your friend until your broke, except close friends that know you like those in the GOP and family.
5) In the end we have nothing at birth, we work and die with nothing. We give to our childrens futures that what is made today, so why does the government and freeloaders want my money? Because they never let the first for reasons apply to them, it is better to play the simpathy card and leech off all of us!

You father is a tribute to all of us....
Who grew up with fathers that never let adversity stop them from being who they wanted to be.
God bless him Larry.

plain and simple.
you get out of life what YOU put into it.color does not matter.

Please thank your father for me...
Dear Larry,

Thank you for sharing your story about your father. I'm a newbie to the Republican Party and I know that I voted for the right candidate. Though I understand the jubilation, I never needed a black person in the White House to feel like I was somebody or could be or do anything I wanted if I took the necessary steps. I just wish that people displayed some happiness when Dr. Rice, Gen. Powell, SCJ Thomas, and a host of others broke barriers. Republican, Democrat, or Independent, we should celebrate and recognize that we have one life and it's up to each individual to be accountable for their personal and professional achievements.

Stay true to yourself,
All my best,
Hope

Your father is a wise man...
It's a shame that more people don't have the determination and belief in themselves that your father does. It's gotten to a point in thsi world where no one wants to make an effort for anything and therefore anything they actually manage to accomplish is valued far more cheaply than if it had been hard fought and won.

I've always said that this is the greatest country in the world because everyone does have the same opportunity to achieve success, if they are just willing to apply themselves and work for it. Unfortunately there are too many people in this country that don't want to make an effort to get ahead on their own and they expect someone else (namely the governement) to do all the work for them.

Let's hope that the attitude of self-reliance your father passed on to you and your siblings is catching, because this country sure could use a lot more of it!

Thanks Mr. Elder
What a beautiful article. I say, Mr. Elder, has your dear father considered a run for the Whitehouse?

He'd have my vote in a flash. God Bless him.

Hot Springs

I lived in Hawaii for 25 years.
Every time there was an election for governor, the powers-that-be would decide which ethnic group should have a turn at the office. Was this the year for a Filipino governor? A Japanese governor? A Hawaiian governor? Now Honolulu has its first Samoan mayor. This provides wonderful diversity but pitiful leadership. Once many of these people were elected, they found themselves in a position for which they had given no thought. Their only preparation for the post was their membership in the politically correct ethnic group. Today, Hawaii is governed like a banana republic. I had to move back to the Mainland and the greater United States. Now that I'm back, Barack Obama brings us a little piece of Hawaii in his "new" racial politics. I've seen the future and it doesn't work.

Great Story
Larry,

You reflect well on your father and mother!

Prior to the War on Poverty, which I supported in my younger years, black families were strong and raised good, hard-working children. Welfare, while thought to be beneficial, actually destroyed many black families and created the ghastly ghetto lifestyle of promiscuity, drugs and crime.

I take it as a great plus that there was no rioting after Obama's election. The inner city black population was genuinely elated and felt that they came into their own dignity.

Too bad this could not have been accomplished with a conservative leading the way. Now we have a president who has very scary associates who is filling his administration with Clinton holdovers of the most egregious sorts. We know that he has plans to require volunteerism (isn't that a contradiction?) as well passing F.O.C.A, etc.

Great Story
Mr. Elder:

I am a day late but really enjoyed the piece. I was in a foul mood after I realized that McCain-Palin had actually lost.

I was saddened the next day to hear the Whoopis and Oprahs of this country proclaim that NOW (only now?) black youth know they can achieve anything they set their minds to. They reminded me of Michele Obama's comments earlier this year.

But your column brought the smile back to this sixty-five year old black American. My parents (two of them by the way) taught me that I could achieve whatever my abilities would permit long before Mr. Obama was born.

Believe in yourself
Great piece, Larry. I put it up there with Clarence Thomas' book. I am white, so I don't know "the black experience", but I concluded a long time ago that hard work pays off. My dad used to tell periodically as I was growing up that "Nobody owes you anything. It's up to you to make a living for yourself." I guess I am reasonably successful, but I have always kept that bit of my father's wisdom in mind.
I have a black friend a little more than half my age (I'm 60). He came from a hardscrabble family in South Carolina. His mother drove him to excel in school. She would accept nothing but his best. He has 3 college degrees, including an MBA. He and I talk frankly about politics, work, and yes race. He also believes in making your own way, and that he can be successful through his own efforts, and he is. Our conversations are some of the most satisfying I have ever had. He is conservative in virtually every way. Yet he voted for Obama, simply because he is black. We discussed that in detail. That's OK with me. He has that right, although I think Obama was the wrong choice - and not because he's black, but because he's a socialist.
So there are some others out there who "believed" all along, and didn't need an Obama to get them there. My friend is one of those. But I think Obama's election makes him feel better about it, and if that's the case, I guess that's OK too.
Now what do we do about that damned socialist we've elected?

rene, placentia, ca
Larry,
Your dad's story was so moving. I would love to meet your dad. I miss your mom on the radio. It sounds much like my family story, though we are of European descent. My dads parents came from Italy with nothing but the clothes on their back. My grandfather found work learning to cut hair to support his 11 children and my grandmother made clothes for local dress and wedding shops. Their oldest son became a well known doctor, several others business owners. All served the country in WWII.
And now I tell my teenage son the same message. Work hard, take responsibility for your success, be kind and generous to others. Never give up, you are the master of your destiny.
Keep hope alive? How about keep alive the concept of a hard work ethic and that you are only entitled to what you earn (except dignity!)?

Believe in Obama or God?
I am white and I did not vote for Obama, but it was not because he is black. It was because I do not share his political positions such as abortion, gay marriage, more taxation, drug policies, and etc. However, I am happy for black America and their feelings of a renewed sense of hope as well as a gained sense of full citizenship. What concerns me most is that I'm not certain that Obama truly understands brave men like your father who faced injustice and rose above it. Your fathers life in America was very different than Obamas. Obama attended school in Indonesia and then when he returned to America, he attended private school.
See the wikipedia facts below
it.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama#Early_life_and_career
I am concerned that black America has placed a great deal of their hope in a man but I remain grounded in the fact that hope does not come from man, but from God.
As you know, many white Americans voted for Obama. My prayer is that all of us will understand that we all face struggles with injustice, evil and difficulties in our country. I have long felt that black America was selfish in holding fast to genralizing the cry against "White America" for far too long and very selfish in believing that blacks have been the only ones who face these battles. Maybe now there will be a funeral for that way of thinking and together we will come to the realization that the battle all along was not against "White America" but against evil and the evil one.
May God bless you and your father who is a true hero!

very good article
I liked your father's advice in the letter to your brother. What a neat person.

racism
I ran into racism in Kalamazoo when I became friends with a black man who had married a white woman. Being I was raised that we are all the same and all have red blood I was apalled. I became friends with this mans brothers and they were hard working hard playing good people and even though they were discriminated against the were not racist. I then moved to Alabama where racism was much worse. A man I worked with was grossly underpaid but doing the same work as I was, I found him a job at another shop where he could make a decent living and got fired for doing it. I then had crosses burnt in my front yard. I let loose with my gun and the cowards ran. I always carried a gun and was always aware of my surroundings so they were never able to catch me. I then moved to Calif. where I ran into more racism this time against the mexican population. To make things short I helped many of them and have no regrets other then I couldnt have done more. I have more black and mexican friends then I do white and some of my white friends have children who are interacialy married. Colin Powell greatly lost my respect when he backed Obama and I would never vote for Obama but would enthusiastically vote for Condalesa Rice if she were to run. How about a Rice Palin ticket or a Maulkin Palin ticket in 2012. God Bless America and get us through this socialistic government with out a revolution.Gene Oh yes I am white.
