Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The following letter should have been written, but was not, by an illegal alien:

Dear American People,

I entered your country illegally. Several years ago, I paid thousands of dollars to a "coyote" to sneak me out of Mexico through your southern border.

I broke the law. I did it out of desperation -- desperation to leave a corrupt country whose socialist economic policies make it impossible for me to earn a decent living for my family. Most of us illegals come into your country to earn a living, with many sending money back to Mexico and other Latin American countries. In fact, the Mexican economy depends on these remittances, and would collapse without this money. I say this not to justify my illegal entry into your country, but to explain it.

While I left my wife and children behind, I know that some illegal aliens entered your country with the intention to have children, so-called "anchor babies." Under your laws, these children become automatic American citizens, eligible for welfare benefits.

I can understand your rage at being taken advantage of. After all, we aliens paid nothing to build your infrastructure, and contributed nothing to the welfare programs, the education system or the health care system that many of us now take advantage of.

Studies conflict over how much we aliens cost your country. Some say we cost a lot, although other studies say our hard work reduces the burden on the American taxpayer through cheaper goods and services. In any case, a first generation "illegal" undoubtedly takes more out of your country than he or she puts in. And we cut the line in front of those attempting to enter your country the right way, and threaten the livelihood of some so-called unskilled American workers. Again, I understand your anger.

When your House of Representatives passed the commonly called Sensenbrenner Bill, making it a felony to be in your country illegally, many of my fellow illegal aliens took to the streets, some waving the Mexican flag. Some of those in the streets steadfastly refuse to learn English -- however long they have been here -- even going so far as to demand "bilingual education" programs in American, English-speaking schools. These illegals were demanding our "rights." What rights?

This sense of entitlement understandably angers Americans. I hear many fellow illegals say, "I didn’t cross the border, the border crossed me." Our schools taught us as children that America "stole" the Southwest, including Texas and California. Therefore many illegals foolishly believe that crossing the border and entering your country actually represents a "recapture" of lands to which we feel legally and morally entitled. Never mind that through war, conquest and colonialism, the boundaries of most countries become drawn and re-drawn, with America no exception.

Because your country, unlike my country, does not thoroughly guard its borders (Mexico places the military on its border with Guatemala) illegals from Mexico and other Latin-American countries leave trash on your border, violate the private property rights of Americans living at or near the border, and sometimes threaten American farmers with harm. Also, through your border, Mexican drug dealers smuggle not only people, but drugs and guns, and make a mockery of your territorial integrity.

Some illegals commit crime in addition to the illegal act of entering your country. This includes the drug dealers, gang members and other criminals. Nearly 600,000 illegals live in America while under orders to deport, many of whom entered through your southern border. Others sit in your prisons and jails. This costs American taxpayers both property damage, money and, all too often, even lives. Your outrage is justifiable, and, speaking for myself, I can only say that I am sorry.

Your country stands as a beacon of freedom, having helped save the world from fascism and Nazism in World War II, as well as saving the world from communism during the long, costly "Cold War." And now, your country sacrifices blood and treasure in the war on terrorism against Islamofascism. This makes securing your border not just a matter of economics, but a matter of national security.

Finally I want to say thank you, America. Bless you for allowing us to enter your great country, and to earn a living, an opportunity not available in the countries where we were born. Bless you for not deporting us, for our humane treatment, and for allowing so many of us to take advantage of your educational opportunities, as well as social programs including welfare and health care.

So as you debate immigration reform, please understand that we intend to accept the outcome, and simply hope and pray that the kindness and generosity of Americans can permit most of us to stay. If you allow me to remain in your country, I intend to show my gratitude with hard work and appreciation, so that one day I may call myself an American. Sincerely,

An illegal alien -- and I approved this translation.

My response:
Go home to where you came from. Get in line just like everyone else. Take your turn. Apply legally. If you meet our criteria for entrance, we'll let you in. If you don't, good luck in your home country. If you don't like things in your home country, change them.

PS
We did not do what you wrote: "allowing us to enter your great country, and to earn a living, an opportunity not available in the countries where we were born"

You broke our laws, jumped our borders, and we're not "allowing" a damned thing. If I see your sorry butt, I'll do everything I can to get it shipped back out of the country.

ONE DINKY CHECK MARK!

Oh Brother...
Sounds like the type of letter a thug on trial writes in order to obtain leniency from the judge.

Sorry I broke into that home, stole their belongings, and raped their daughter. But I have so little, and women just won't pay attention to me. So please cut me some slack rather than toss my behind in jail.

Boo Hoo
Just go home

"Kindness and Generosity"
Another pseudo conservative invoking liberal themes of kindness and generosity (AKA compassion) in the law. The law is not supposed to be kind and generous; it's supposed to be firm, unwavering, and dispassionate. To a liberal that might be seen as unkind and ungenerous but in fact allowing the rule of law to be circumvented and ignored is far more cruel to the far more numerous citizenry that follows the law. Kindness and generosity in the law is what has given us a Constitution that is basically meaningless. Kindness and generosity in the law is what undermines our freedoms, sovereignty, and individual rights.

Sawgunner nailed it -- this mock apology foolishly crafted by Mr. Elder has all of the sincerity of a lawyer-crafted prepared statement being read by a thug at trial in a transparent attempt to gain leniency. Spare me the contrived contrition and send this farcical illegal back to his fictional homeland south of the Rio Grande.

Nice try though Mr. Elder, you're already stated support of amnesty is not made any more palatable by trying to humanize the perpetrators of this cancer on our society. Many pseudo conservative amenesty supporters have already adopted the liberal tactic of lobbing charges of racism against anyone opposed to amnesty; now Mr. Elder wants to adopt the liberal tactic of compassion. I'm not sure which tactic I find more traitorous to the mind, body, and spirit of conservative thought.

A letter that will never be written by i
Brian,'

While I agree that "they" should go home, I do not want anymore from south of the border to "get in line and do it right." The reason...as more and more Hispanics pour in, they will eventually vote as a block and we're out! Is the State Department only allowing Hispanics In? Seems that way. If not, then the invasion is much greater than anyone knows.

"SHOULD have been written"
When Larry wrote that this is a letter that "should have been written, but was not," I interpreted that as saying that the illegals SHOULD be grateful and humble but do not seem to be.

If Larry has advocated blanket amnesty for illegals, I have missed it. In fact I don't ever remember his advocating for ignoring existing laws, even the laws against "recreational drugs," with which, as a Libertarian, he doesn't agree.

By the way, does it seem odd that the same bunch of lazy, cretinous Congressional louts that are eager to surrender to the terrorists because "70% of Americans want it" (and Bush doesn't) had to be bludgeoned into dropping an anmesty plan that OUTRAGED at least 70% of their constituents? What's wrong with this picture?

gratitude
The lack of gratitude from the illegals is what bothers me the most. You would think they would learn enough English to stop an American every once in a while and express their gratitude to us. It's the same with older folks on medicare. I've never had an older person thank me for working and giving up some of my hard-earned money to help pay their healthcare. I guess the illegals are just following our idea of entitlements.

BULLSH--T
THE LETTER IS BULL ,SOME CROSS AND DO THE RIGHT THING,MOST COME HERE TO GET A JOB AND BE CONSTRUCTIVE, THE REST JUST PLAY THE SYSTEM BECAUSE THEY CAN..STOP ALL WELFARE COMPLETLY TO EVERYONE.STOP FREE HEALTHCARE,AND SCHOOL FOR THEM,THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE AMERICANS THAT PLAY THE SYSTEM TO,GETTING WELFARE FREE MEDICAL HELP AND SO ON.IM DISABLED AND CAN NOT AFFORD INSURANCE FOR MY WIFE ,BUT I CANT GET WELFARE AND I STIIL HAVE TO PAY TAX ,,FOR THEM TO GET FREE STUFF ,SO THEY CAN KISS MY AMERICAN .................BUTT

the basis
of this letter is intended to bring about emotions that would excuse the behavior of criminals.

Sorry, I refuse to excuse any criminal activity especially from illegal border crossers. To give this a pass is just plain ridiculous.

OBEY THE LAW! For F#@*s sake what is so difficult to understand here, why do we continue to debate this?

The outcome of allowing this to continue and not punishing those who have committed the crime will have an impact on our country that will in given time make this country no better then the one they are escaping.

Prosecute those that hire them, fire those that allow the laws to be spat upon.

CHEECH
When I was a child I remember an old man who use to sit on the sidewalk in the downtown area of my town. He had no legs, and he sold pencils. When I got older, I always thought “welfare” was for people like that. People, through no fault of their own, who found it almost impossible to earn a living. Isn’t it strange that we hear “hire the handicapped” campaigns in the media because the handicapped want to work, and yet the perfectly able bodied who don’t want to work are the ones who demand, and receive, welfare. Whatever happened to common sense?

Here's the real letter
(This of course had to be translated into English)

Dear America,

I have absolutely no motivation to make my homeland of Mexico a better place to live. I have no desire to rally and protest and come together with my fellow brothers to change the status of this corrupt government. That would take too much effort.

Instead, I decided I will illegally cross over your borders and take advantage of what so many of my brothers have already. And what are you going to do about it? Nothing.

I will continue to get jobs, I will never pay your taxes, I will never need to register or get a driver's license, I will never buy health insurance. I will use that money for myself and my immediate needs and not contribute to your system or your society. And what are you going to do about it? Nothing.

I have impregnated my wife again, my kids are legally US citizens under your laws, ha ha ha, isn't that funny? I have no intention on teaching them your language, or learning about your history. I refuse to become Americanized because I hate the white man. What are you going to do about it? Nothing.

I will live the way I want to live, and not by your laws. I will take advantage of every benefit your country has given all of us whether we come here legally or not. And what are you going to do about it? Nothing.

Thanks for the free pass. Viva La Raza.

Medicare Recipient Responds
spiritof76 Thank you for continuing to pay your FICA tax as I did for over forty years. It is good that the younger worker is now financing this. While the specific medicare tax was implemented in the last years of my employment, I too paid into the fund. I hope when you retire and no longer earn sufficient funds to pay for your personal health insurance that medicare will be there for you. I do not misuse medical services but am glad to know they will be available when needed.

Please do not lump senior American citizens in with people here illegally who have never contributed to the welfare of citizens who also paid and paid into the system.

Illegal means illegal

What part of ILLEGAL do you not understand, Larry? The American people have spoken. This debate is over.

Deport them all.

Pat in NC
"Please do not lump senior American citizens in with people here illegally who have never contributed to the welfare of citizens who also paid and paid into the system."

Of course we wouldn't do that. My father is retired and is on Medicare too, and because of people like him and you, who worked your entire life and paid taxes, Medicare is something that all seniors who retire are entitled to.

And like you, I hope it's there for me when I retire, in about 25 years :(

My fear is that if we do nothing about the illegals coming in and still give them free healthcare, my worries are that there will be nothing left for me and other US citizens who contributed to it all their working lives.

The real translation
"Finally I want to say thank you, America. Bless you for allowing us to enter your great country, and to earn a living, an opportunity not available in the countries where we were born. Bless you for not deporting us, for our humane treatment, and for allowing so many of us to take advantage of your educational opportunities, as well as social programs including welfare and health care."

Real translation: Thank you for allowing the geographical cesspools south of the border to dump thousands of their human garbage into your country. We sure do appreciate the taxpayers footing the bill for medical care, welfare, and education we did nothing to deserve. We also like all the bleeding hearts and radical "reconquistas" who make it easier for us not to assimilate into your adopted country. Viva la illegals!

How sad
I used to love Larry and often tuned in to his show. He seems to have lost his senses on the illegal immigrant issue however. I continue to be dissapointed in his stance. One of the arguements he has used is that "well of course the social services that draw aliens here should be discontinued, but we need them all here for their labor", huh? Give me a break Larry. He has also spent a great deal of time covering for Johnny Sutton. When a caller asked him the other day if Mike Nifong could abuse his position as a prosecutor in the Duke case couldn't Sutton do the same Larry was positively aghast. "Oh no...that was an isolated incident...I've had Sutton on to explain..." Again give me a break Larry. Mike Nifong continued to argue that he was right for almost a YEAR!!!!

Stephen W. Browne
Dear Mexico,

After many years of having you dump your potential troublemakers and revolutionaries on the US, so that your corrupt oligarchy can continue lording it over a society stuck somewhere between socialism and feudalism, we have had enough.

We are going to take the following actions:

1) We are going to get serious about border security.

2) We are going to round up all illegals and send them back to Mexico. If you think this isn't practical - you might remember that this was in fact done once before during the Eisenhower administration.

But to show that there's no hard feelings, every illegal upon exit will be given several weeks rations in the form of surplus Army MREs - and an AK-47 rifle with a thousand rounds of ammunition.

Have a nice day!

http://rantsand.blogspot.com/

Mr. Elder
Tsk. Tsk. As my Grandma would say. But it is good to see that you have placed a higher price on the life of a Mexican Citizen than that of an American Citizen. Because really that's what all this schmaltz boils down to.

When we allow Illegals to degrade ALL of our national systems (welfare, education, medicade, etc.) through endless slowbleed and look the other way when crimes are committed by them, and then try you make what they do sound noble and good--you, sir, are telling me that the life of foriegn born is worth more than mine, and every other AMERICAN citizen. The lives of their children are worth more than my childs life. There will be no American dream anymore if we continue to give illegals this sort of emotional collateral and forget to give Americans the same emotions.

Time to look at some hard facts, and then determine our emotions about them. Let me ask you Mr. Elder, in L.A. how many black students are going to schools (that where hanging by a thread financially, and academically before) that are now having to teach bilingual students who are 3-5 years behind grade level? Do you think that the black American child is falling through the cracks? How does that make you FEEL? Makes me pretty disgusted.

And when that same child goes for a job--that might just give his barely stable family in L.A. a chance to move into a new apartment--will he get hired? No, because an illegal will get it at half the price. Now the black American child in L.A. has a cruddy education and not even a minimum wage job. How does that make you feel? Makes me pretty disgusted.

And when that same black kid is walking down the street and is killed in a drive-by by illegal drug runners? How does that make you feel? It disgusts me.

When trying to give a human face to your argument do not think that we are so stupid as to think that the Americans do not have the same human face. Those of us against illegals see the humanity on our side as well, and have decided that AMERICAN children are where our loyalties belong.

It's the attitude dude!
"When Larry wrote that this is a letter that "should have been written, but was not," I interpreted that as saying that the illegals SHOULD be grateful and humble but do not seem to be."

Correct, The whole debate and issue would be 180 degrees from what it is IF, there was "a sense of gratitude for an attitude."

It might have once been that way, now - these people rightly or wrongly fully believe that they are as "entitled' to the fruits of OUR labors since that IS the American Dream, as they dream it, as they were sold on it.

Nearly EVERYONE of us, readers of this site (TH) were born here by luck and chance, and foresight of our families to come here. Immigration HAS NEVER been easy or without hardship. Most of the American population are descendants of LEGAL immigrants. Immigration IS GOOD, illegal acts, including illegal immigration is NOT GOOD.

If you are willing to break ONE rule of law, what others are you willing to break? Because in your little village "back home" you can have 20 people living in one residence -- why not expect that you can do the same here? It's what's done right?

"Tenement apartments" were not always rats nests and vermin warrens, they were once "nice" apartments that were crowded by over occupancy. An apartment that a newly married couple might have been able to afford in the city in the late 1890s, was in a few short years, subdivided into cubicles for dozens.

Tenements did not start out as bad, and many a suburban community, many a neighborhood street are turning into "tenement districts" and many a single family home is now a multi-family warehousing.

It is getting to a point, and it IS NOT an inner city problem, that is why Middle America, both sides of the "middle of the road" protested and called, wrote, and visited their congressional representatives and senators. It IS in our backyards now.

The first two comments
by BrianR said it all.

I see no evidence at all that illegal aliens have any gratitude or appreciation whatsoever. I don't even know why I read Larry's entire column, because it was a ridiculous fanstasy from paragraph 1. These people BEGAN their journey in America by breaking laws. And because we don't post armed guards at our borders, they think it's fine to cross, destroy land and traffic drugs? Who in heaven's name would want this caliber of person in the U.S. to begin with?

My feeling, increasingly, is -- round 'em up and send 'em home.

No moonbats yet
Though I anticipate Lilly at any moment -- this is one of her favorite leftists sob-stories.

Personally, all I'm asking for is equal protection under the law. If the illegal immigrants can get away with breaking the law for 20 years -- the date of the last amnesty -- can I choose a law to be exempt from for 20 years? And can I have my taxes back for the last 20 years, while you're at it?

Shells
Would your parents react negatively to what you wrote? Though my Mom is fairly liberal (MSM Training), she does not like the illegal immigration that is occuring (though I'm sure what she watches and listens to blame Bush for it). She actually has many conservative ideas but has been so trained by the MSM that Conservatives are backward monsters, that she cannot fathom not being a dem.

Love ya Larry
but no sale on this one, bud.

Should have but WASN'T
Yeah, it was a sweet letter, but it wasn't written by an illegal. Their attitude is "this is our country, you move, you learn Spanish". And every time I press 1 for English I know they are winning.

Seal the border, repeal the anchor baby law. Stop money flowing to Mexico (we don't let money go to Cuba) Fine the Holy BeGEEEZUS out of those that hire illegals, and I for one, believe we can deport 20 million people.

And I say that
because, after living in a border community for over ten years, it seemed that those who came here, mostly illegally, think they own the place. "Land of the free" doesn't mean everything is free to you.

First few comments
ditto....BrianR said it all.
I have no problem with LEGAL immigration.
Radlad writes: The fault is squarely on the shoulders of "We the people".
Once we vote them out......look who is standing in the wings, drooling to get into the system. Do I see anyone eagerly and truthfully ready to do the will of "we the people"? With the media and congress as it is, will anyone with common sense and decency run?
When candidates are spouting immigration-reform while stumping global needs, global economy and international systems, you can bet they they are pro open borders.
I agree with Newt....the whole system needs over-haul.

Hey Larry,...
...ask the ghosts of Will Harbut or Eddie Sweat what they might think about illegal immigration.

IF this letter had been written
If I had heard these words from illegals at or before the beginning of this debate, the humanitarian argument probably could have swayed me. I didn't hear anything like gratitude from illegals and their supporters, only demands. The hell with it, deport 'em all.

Similarly, If in late 2001 and early 2002 I had seen "the mass majority of peaceful Muslims" protesting, not against this country but against the terrorists, I would have been inclined to believe Islam is a "relegion of peace". I didn't - what a shame.

This fight
has only just begun. we killed the bill but now it is time to force them to have some common sense and do what is right by the American People. Of course no illegal is going to write this letter. They didn't earn what they have so they therefore do not appreciate it.

KEEP HAMMERING CONGRESS!!!!! DON'T LET UP!!!!!

USMCOCAN
My sentiments exactly. They had time to choose a side and they have chosen the wrong side. Wonder when Americans will be tired of being the world's whipping boy?

Dear Illegal Alien,
While your desire to come to the U.S.A. and seek the prosperity one can achieve being here is understandable, you need to take the time and effort to do so legally for the citizens of this country to accept you as a legal immigrant.

By breaking the laws of this land to come here you show disrespect for the laws and to the people whom you wish to live amongst. It is not a good way to show the citizens and legal immigrants of the U.S. that your intentions are good and trustworthy.

As for your desperation, the people of America were once desperate too. Our forefathers tried to escape the rule of socialist and monarchy governments by coming to this great land, but they found out that once they arrived they were still subject to the same corrupt and controlling government, but now had even less representation as they were no longer part of the governing country but rather in a colony a great distance away.

In the end they decided that fleeing was not the answer, instead they needed to take a stand and fight for what they believed in. The first step was what created this great nation. Their next step was to encourage those they left back in their home countries to rebel and revolt against the corrupt and controlling governments.

As a nation we would rather support your efforts to improve your country of origin rather than allow a mass migration to destroy our nation from the inside out. In order to stay a prosperous nation we must regulate immigration so that our population growth does not out pace out financial growth and our social ability to sustain the population.

There are some in this country who wish to establish the same type of corrupt and socialist economic policies in this nation which you are running from. They thrive on having a poor population who relies on government handouts to justify the institution of their policies. By coming here illegally you actually help that type of government gain power which you seek to escape.

There are also employers who want the cheapest labor they can get. They want to take advantage of your illegal status by paying you less than a legal citizen would demand for that type of labor. You are in essence making yourself into a sub-class which borders on indentured servitude. Do you want to be slaves or free legal citizens?

I'm willing to accept you as a citizen of this nation once you immigrate legally via the proper process. Return of your own free will to your home country, go through the process many other legal immigrants have gone through, and return with the proper legal status. The only exception to this are the criminals who come here and prey on others. Those such as gang members, robbers, drug dealers, rapists, child molesters, and murderers will not be welcome even if they go through the process of legal entry.

A beacon of freedom
The Statue of Liberty asks, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

But now many people say, "Give me your English-speaking, educated, documented immigrants with respectable jobs waiting for them after they fill out a mound of paperwork and prostate themselves before the immigration officials."

When our immigration procedures are no longer a byzantine maze of forms, documents, interviews, and degradation, then you can talk to me about "apply legally and then we'll let you in." Until then, demanding "legal" immigration from most countries of the world remains nothing but a sick joke.

Wrong.

Many people say; "Give me those willing to put fourth the effort to become American by being willing to learn our language and culture, abide by our laws, and work hard to provide for yourself instead of living on social services".

The one point you do make that I partly agree with is that the process to apply and gain legal immigrant status is a maze of paperwork and forms. Like many other government processes it is bogged down with paperwork and red tape. It would be nice to see the process made easier and more effective, but despite the complicated process many people every year manage to apply and gain legal entry. Those people have demonstrated, by their willingness to go through the process, that they are willing to abide by the law of this nation and work hard to make something of themselves once they get here.

Whats this crap
Is this susposed to make us compliant? Is this susposed to make us Sympathetic? No it angers us. You admit entering this country illegally. You admit to taking jobs (susposedly we wont do). And you say thank you for the right to be an Illegal and in my country.

You are either stupid or just an imbicile. This doesn't make us accept you, you illegal a$^ho*9 it makes us despise you more. I don't accept your appology or attempt there of. What I do accept is your unconditional surrender and deportation back to Mexico. If I have to shoot you in the head myself to make sure your not in this country I'll pay Bush to do it since he's your biggest champion. Stay away from me or my family and if I see you in a job I or others Americans should have I'll break your arms or legs to make sure they get it. Fk off. You illegal scum. And fk this stupid writter for publishing something like this. This only incites us and it doesnt appease us you ignorant illegal scum. fk you all!!@!!!!!

Liz they dont have the right to vote cause their illegal. But I know both sides are trying to get them votable as with the New Haven ID's. We should all protes NH as well untill it gives up. But knowing that they will have 1 mil plus illegals in a few days and can't support thenm but we can deport then makes me feel much better. Of course I haven't heards anything from the DHS that says they will deport all the illegals comming for the ID. Why is that? There will be millions showing up? Why cant they-who say they can't find them- be there to arrest and deport the millions that will come. I thin the movies line is, "If you advertise for illegals..they will come to be deported." If the DHS and the gov doesnt do whats right now they never will and the whole gov has to go even if we have to overthrow it. Thata the only option left now.

Bush
Our beloved President likes hispanics, legal or not, because his family once had a hispanic au pere who was an angel. Working under the proposition that "All Indians walk in a straight line; I know because the one I saw did" Bush has made no secret of his desire to create tons and tons of new Democratic voters. And, incidentally, he and the Republican jellyfish, have probably given the election to Hillary and eight more years of the Clintons. I am fed up with all this and intend to suspend voting for the next eight to ten years, or however many years out country has left to it.

Shells
Your post impressed me. But here is what it really says:

We came here in 1492, white and of the Spanish race. We took over and stole all the land from South America to half of America. We mixed with the indians (not of American Culture) to become Mestisos. We fought you for the lands we really didn't own cause we took them, but your to stupid to know that, so we want them back. We've been invading your country agressivaly for years now to take back what wasn't our, but since we cliam it in the name of the Billions we killed, it should be ours. If you dont give it to us..We will just wait for GW to do it since he already promised. so fk your society..oops..I mean my society. Make way for the stealers of culture cause we stole this and other countries and now want it back cause we know you beat our a^& once for it and could do it again. Sorry but I cant stay in my corrupt country with all the illegal activity there as I make no profit. So I will brings drugs or myself there to take away your jobs at your Presidnts will and send all you economy back to my despised homland. Who says Mexicans..oops Spanish decent cant rule for ever? This is you punishment for our Armadas failure.

Signed,
The Ungrateful Mexicans who hate you and your country.

Shame on you!
It would have been better if you had written a letter from a legal immigrant that is thankful for being allowed entry, is still waiting for his/her spouse to be granted entry, and the difficulty in understanding why Congress is trying to grant special privileges to someone who broke the law that is not available to those who obey the law. Instead you try to play an emotional argument to allow illegal immigrants to stay while a retired veteran cannot bring his mother-in-law into the U.S. without a 7-10 year wait.

Shame!

oh please!
Is this supposed to tug on my heartstrings???? Well, it doesn't! Having been raised in El Paso, Texas, and being a 'gringa', I think I am qualified to say illegals coming across the southern border have no respect for this nation. Mexico is corrupt-I won't argue that. But abandoning Mexico to leech off of us isn't going to fix matters in Mexico! It is NOT, as they will have us think, that they are looking for a better life here. It is that we have made it easier for them NOT to improve conditions in their own countries, particularly Mexico. Even if we did help them to improve living conditions within their own countries, that won't stop them from continueing to steal from us. They have no desire to stand up to their own governments and demand that the corruption cease. They are themselves corrupt.

The words on the Statue of Liberty were put there by the FRENCH.

What I WANT TO KNOW
Why do we ALLOW those from la raza to talk? Why do we not deport them? Are they not illegal??

I will believe we are getting serious when the spokesman/woman from any of the various groups that support illegals is arrested for aiding and abetting a felony!

Mr Elder has written some good columns - this ain't one of them!

Honestly, I could only guess that my parents, who live in Arizona of all places, turn a deaf-dumb-and blind eye to what goes on there regarding illegal immigration. And by the way, they still won't speak to me!

If Michael Moore or the MSM say Illegal Immigration is good, then by gum--it must be!!! No need to look further!

What's the Point?

Am I supposed to feel sorry for this hypothetical illeagal, and say, "it's ok, we'll sort you out and you can stay?" Personally, I could care less about the why. If we're going to say you can stay because your poor, I've got news for you, there are places and people were it is a whole lot worse tha good ol' sunny mexico

images worth a thousand words
In early 2006, there were ILLEGAL alien street demonstrations demanding their "rights." I was amused that the (remote from Middle America) PC MM saw those and predicted that they would compel Congress to act. Oddly enough, I was delighted by those street demonstrations waving foreign flags and brandishing signs about the Reconquista. It had taken a while really to rouse Middle America, but suddenly citizens began to rattle the cages of Rush, Sean, Glenn Beck, etc. who helped get their attention in Congress. What started out as "comprehensive immigration reform" and arrogance about "we won't tolerate racism against the undocumented" suddenly became a reckoning that the rule of law and actual citizenship really ought to matter, and that euphemisms like "undocumented" and sophistry such as "just doing those tough jobs that Americans won't do" really did not fool anybody in Peoria.

There are a number of myths bandied about referencing ILLEGAL aliens... I will follow with a few. They do come here for jobs, BUT also welfare. The vast majority will take (per Heritage) a lot more on balance than they contribute because of their socio-economic profiles (uneducated and net users of tax dollars) and concomitant social pathologies (propensity to crimes, gangs, illegitimacies, dropouts, pandemic health care problems, eventual welfare dependency, and chain migration of more of the same).

WHAT THE HECK IS SANCTUARY???
THIS LETTER NOT WRITTEN BY AN ILLEGAL BUT APPROVED BY AHHHH......

LET'S DISCUSS SANCTUARY.

FIRST OF ALL WHO ARE THESE TWITS THAT SEEM TO THINK THAT THEY ARE THE STATE DEPARTMENT, ARE THEY QUEEN NANCY PELOSI'S OR SEN. JUNKETT BOXER'S? NO! THEY ARE TOWNS, CITIES, ORGANIZATIONS AND CHURCHES MADE UP OF EITHER VERY STUPID PEOPLE OR TOTALLY DICONNECTED ALIENS. MAYBE THEY JUST LIKE FOREIGN FOOD BETTER THAN REDNECK AMERICAN FOODS. MIGHT BE A CULINARY THING, WHO KNOWS?

HERE'S HOW A LAW ABIDING XENOPHOBIC, RACIST SUCH AS MYSELF SEE'S THIS FRAUD PERPETRATED BY OUR ESTEEMED MISINFORMED. SANCTUARY SHOULD BE, WE WILL HELP YOU GET BACK TO YOUR LEGAL COUNTRY OF ORGIN AND MAKE EFFORT TO HAVE YOU RETURN LEGALLY TO OUR COUNTRY AND BECOME A FULL FLEDGED AMERICAN. THESE FOLKS OUGHT TO BE ABLE TO MANAGE THIS ON THEIR OWN OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES, THERE ARE A LOT OF RICH LIBS OUT THERE YA KNOW.

Stormy
Your take on it was quite interesting.

But I wasn't thinking of it in terms of what happened in 1492 and there on. I'm thinking of my great grandparents fleeing Russia and Poland for their lives to make it to the USA for better opportunities and safety.

They came legally, they registered, they went through exams, they tried their best to learn the language. They were Jews and were also discrimiated against. No one needed to hire them if they chose not to, no one needed to be fair and pay them for hard labor. They were poor, lived in ghettos, and raised their family to be honest, hard working, and stressing education.

They thrived. They did it legally with no handouts, no riots, no protests, no benefits, and no laws to protect them.

So, when I see today how easy the illegals have it today with all the perks and the laws protecting, I find it insulting.

Sorry, Larry...no sale
I don't see that much gratitude. It's more a sense of entitlement.

My hope
My only hope is that these illeagal immigrant rights activists keep up their diatribe. Every time they open their mouths, more of the uncommitted see this for what it is. They want to break the law "just because.." and be forgiven for the same reason. It ain't gonna work guys, all you are going to do is bury yourselves and tick off the rest of America.

You might have had a chance before the May Day celebration, but you opened a lot of eyes back in 2006 to just what a problem you have created.

To One and ALL

I don't remember when we have had such a bad column with such GOOOOD posts. I am awe struck.

I wrote Larry Elders directly so I have nothing to add to your posts. My cup runneth over.......

Congratulations to ALL.

PS: I have been trying for 10 minutes to get this to post.. Who decided the posts are to good and tied a can to our tail.??.

Was that a real interview you posted?

Honestly, I believe it. That just about sums it all up now, doesn't it?

Bank of Mexico?
The Bank of America now offers a line of credit to people with no social security number for the soul purpose of attracting illegals and their money.
No wonder we are losing this war.

Hi everybody!
Just because no progressives, liberals, leftists, "moonbats", socialists, Democrats, or even any nice people have posted on this article yet today, and all of you ultra-right-wing conservatives have had the place to yourself so far, and you may have forgotten:

Yes, the rest of the world still thinks you're crazy. And yes, your rabidly anti-illegal immigration opinions are still racist, xenophobic, hyperpatriotic and, well, racist.

Sorry to interrupt your love(hate)fest. Just wanted to remind you you're nuts.

Everyone have a great afternoon!

Thanks for stepping up to (moon)bat, TL
"Yes, the rest of the world still thinks you're crazy."

"The rest of the world" thought up Nazism, Communism, jihadism, and Maoism too.

"And yes, your rabidly anti-illegal immigration"

You are, then, PRO-illegal immigration?

"opinions are still racist,"

What "race," precisely, is involved?

"xenophobic, hyperpatriotic"

Exactly what do you mean by "hyperpatriotic?"

"and, well, racist."

You DO realize you were reduced, in one reasonably short sentence, to repeating yourself?

BTW, you have a great afternoon too...

DocNoleCat
I wasn't going to interject any further, but since you asked a few questions...

You wrote: "The rest of the world" thought up Nazism, Communism, jihadism, and Maoism too."

The rest of the world also "thought up" democracy, liberty, all our 1st Amendment freedoms, monotheism, Protestant Christianity, the Industrial Revolution, the abolition of slavery, the free-market economy, military structure, and on and on and on.

And this also helps illustrate the definition of "hyperpatriotic": (Webster's: fanatically patriotic); of or relating to a loyalty so intense towards ones nation of origin as to cause the subject to develop a selective view of history, favoring the contributions and successes of that one country above all other countries, even when historical fact contradicts such beliefs.

Americans who believe the US is the world's first or only free Representative Democracy are a perfect illustration.

The push for English to be America's official language is also hyperpatriotic.

The general disdain for multiculturalism among American conservatives is hyperpatriotism.

"You are, then, PRO-illegal immigration?"

I am pro- an easier path for legal citizenship for all people who desire it. Without having to pay $5000.

Look, if your beef is that they cost so much in American resources without paying taxes, isn't the only way to get them paying taxes to make them legal citizens?!? And since that's what they want, and they'll be working and paying taxes like all of us, won't everyone be happy?

"What "race," precisely, is involved?"

Oh, please. If white protestant french-canadians were crossing our border in droves illegally, white, protestant American conservatives would not be this upset (you know, xenophobia?). It's been obvious in conservatism before.

Berlin and Hamburg could never have been Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We could never do that to White people!

illegal aliens
I warned Larry about all this 10 years ago. I knew what was happening, what was going to happen, and I know what is going to happen in the future. Larry thought his libertarian principles accounted for open borders. He was wrong.
This country is fighting for its life. I do not know how this will all work out, but I do believe that there will be trouble of some kind no matter what we do or don't do now. That is the price this country will pay for having been so stupid as to let itself get in this mess in the first place. Larry was part of that problem.
We should send the illegals home and set up a guest worker program. That has always been the answer. This is surely the last chance that our country will have to reassert control over its sovereignty and destiny.

Christopher Parisho:
"The words on the Statue of Liberty were put there by the FRENCH."

Wrong. They were written by an AMERICAN poet, Emma Lazarus, as part of an art auction to raise funds to build the pedestal for the Statue. They were not attached to the statue until 17 years after the Statue was opened, due to a campaign by AMERICANS who wanted to recognize the Statue as a monument of hope and symbol of welcome to "the outcasts and downtrodden of the world" who were entering the US at Ellis Island.

By the way, when immigrants were entering the US at Ellis island, they were subject to a physical examination lasting less than a minute, a series of questions (such as name, occupation, and destination in the US), and a total wait of typically 3 to 5 hours. Only 2 percent were rejected and sent back to their home country.

Yet somehow we survived and prospered.

The immigration system we have today is an absolute nightmare and an insult to our heritage as a nation of immigrants.

Umm, I think you should check your facts
Hey Madbishop,

I'm pretty sure that the words on the Statue of Liberty are the words of Emily Dickinson, not Emma Lazarus.

Just sayin'

ok - my bad
I just double checked and I was wrong - it WAS Emma Lazarus.

I have thought forever that it was Emily Dickinson.

Sorry, I'm now going to the library...

One bad opinion from Larry
I usually like Larry Elder, but on this issue he is beyond wrong. The letter should also say how we Mexicans hate the United States and only use her like a cheap Tijuana whore. We Mexicans send back 20 billion dollars a year to Mexico instead of using this money in the U.S. Our most infamous group is "La Raza" or the THE RACE because as you all know we are populating your country with anchor babies that will soon make up the majority of your country. Stupid gringos! I want your country, I want the land, I want all that you have done to make the U.S. great, but I do this knowing that America will soon look and feel like Mexico. Corruption rules!

Shell; Larrys subtle point
Yes, the big unanswered question is why aren't "they" grateful? Why aren't the "moderate Moslems" stepping up? Hell, you know why!

Like a kid growing up whose parents indulge their every wish, our "gushing (almost drowning")
abundance we pour over them, without even being asked to do so, and the PC types flaying of those who suggest all obey one set of rules buys us nothing but contempt for our weakness!

Madbishop...Statue of liberty, immigrati
Madbishop,I like your general sentiments re: immigration, but you really do have a genuine-and major-problem. You make no distinction between controlled, legal immigration, and uncontrolled and limitless illegal immigration. All the sentiments expressed by Lazarus (aimed at Jews being persecuted in a Russian pogrom) are fine, but they should only refer to legal immigrants. I wish everyone on the planet had a shot at the good life. I do understand and sympathize. But that's emotional. Policies must be based on logic, and my logic tells me that every human on the planet who wants a better life cannot come here to have it. It's not 1907 anymore. We are now 300 million people, and we have simply reached that point in our history where we can no longer do "business as usual" with regards to illegal immigration. A better approach would be to export the dream, not import all the people.

Illegals may suffer from credit collapse
Interesting that Peter Schiff from Euro Pacific Capital talked about a housing collapse for many years. Illegals have been taking these construction jobs illegaly.

Now the real estate bubble has popped, illegals may leave.

Controlled and Uncontrolled
I am not at all "making no distinction". I am saying that our current immigration system is byzantine, confusing, and degrading to the point of absurdity. In the past only 2% of travellers to this country were turned back. Now we turn back the majority of those who apply legally, because we insist that they *prove* that they will go home, even if they are simply applying for a tourist visa. People going through the legal route often end up hiring attorneys and spending thousands of dollars just to make sure all of their forms and applications are submitted perfectly - because any mistake, any missed deadline, can result in a permanent rejection.

Even though I would love to live in a beautiful country like Brazil, where I have visited multiple times, they don't make me *prove* that I am going to go home after my trip. They trust me to do so. Why is the US policy so arrogant as to say that everyone who comes here is coming to stay unless they prove otherwise?

If our immigration and tourism policies were reasonable and simple, and didn't require gross outlays of cash just to get through the process, then immigrants would probably be glad to follow the rules. If we didn't have absurd "quotas" for how many people are allowed in from various countries, we wouldn't have people sneaking in because they happened to not get the lucky lottery this year.

Reasonable immigration policies have made this country strong in the past, and they would make this country strong now. We may grumble at first generation immigrants for not assimilating and learning English, but these same complaints were made against the Italian immigrants, the Polish immigrants, and the Chinese immigrants. They may have holed up in Little Italy, Little Warsaw, and Chinatown, just as Mexican immigrants stick together in the barrios of Los Angeles.

But the children and grandchildren of those Italians, Poles, and Chinese didn't stay in the ethnic neighborhoods, and neither will the children of the Mexican immigrants.

Think about what you're saying. A lot of immigrants that are on tourist or work visas, are a huge percentage of illegal residents to America. It's not the quotas that are the problem.
There is only so much the infrastructure of a given place and accomodate, and only so many people who can be ACCURATELY put through the system.
Other countries's lack of record keeping make it possible to do the background checks and accurate identification of visitors.
Initially, the 9/11 hijackers had legally entered, but didn't leave when they should have. And Mohammed Attah, one of the ringleader's visa was renewed months after he died.

Our system is going to be limited, however state of the art it is because the populations of our cities swell even WITHOUT legal immigrants.

The world's population who wants to be here, can't be here.
Los Angeles alone swelled in population by one million in just over a few years time.
I can't begin to tell you how bad it's made EVERYTHING to live here now. The crowding is terrible and those of Latin descent make EVERY Latino suspect when it comes to this situation.

And we can't keep giving immeasurable favor to Mexican, or Latin American immigrants without all the other demanding the same accomodation. It's ALL unworkable and our country needs a serious breather from this invasion.

Maybe where you live, you don't feel it so much. I don't know. But California in many ways is a standard the rest of the country will reach in a short time.

I think we should cut off ALL permanent immigration for five years and tourists MUST be compelled to leave.
With so much outsourcing of industry and manufacturing jobs, INSOURCING more people is foolish with so little assimilation time, if any.

It's nothing personal against immigrants. It's the numbers of them. They are overwhelming, and our government, whose job it is to protect us from wanton invasions like this, let alone exponential ENABLING of such, is hard pressed to be motivated to do ANYTHING to stop it, let alone deport those who didn't come here legally.

Bad, all the way bad.

oops typos
I meant to say other countries make it IMPOSSIBLE to do accurate background checks and identification of who is here.

Madbishop---immig.
You are right about things being screwed up, but that is irrelevant. The situation of the US is unique. Brizil does not have millions of people trying to go and remain there every year-we do. Also, you may not know that our legal immigration quotas are by far the most generous in the world. Why is that not enough? We are not a great big empty country that needs millions of laborers anymore. Pointing out that some people always complained about immigrants is true, and is also irrelevant. That was then, this is now. Living in the past may be comforting, but the old excuses and explanations don't cut it anymore. We have never experienced anything in our immigration history like we have now. We are actualy establishing a "Hispanic Quebec, we are now 300 million people, facing global warming, shortages, urban sprawl, etc. When do we get a break? Why are we bad people if we say "no" to illegals? Isn't it best for countless millions of people if they reformed their systems so they can all have better lives? We can't solve the problems of the world by trying to bring everyone here; we can only destroy our country in the foolish attempt. That is happening now.
No one can dispute our right to set and enforce laws that are in the best interest of this country. If we just enforced our laws the way Mexico does, we wouldn't even be having this conversarion.

Columnists are being paid massive money
Columnist can support the "war" and be bought off by "illegal immigration" issue.

Go Larry! Go!

The Freedom of Migration Act
Dear Mr. Elder,

Waste of ink (it would be bytes on the internet, I guess) and time; such nonsense.

As most of Americans, you simply do not know the current immigration laws. Your understanding of economy is skin thin. Political concepts that are foundation of our political system are foreign to you. If you want to learn how immigration should be seen by someone for whom the letter and the spirit of the Constitution is native, go to http://www.henrykkowalczyk.com/immigration.htm .

If you prefer watching, I have a few videos on the subject as well at http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=hak1010 .

Sorry for being so blunt – next time before writing on immigration, do your homework first.

Yes, the letter should have been written by an illegal immigrant. It was not. It would not. It could not.

Where is that attitude of gratitude? (By the way, what is this, an AA meeting?)

Where is the evidence of gratitude in waving a Mexican flag in the faces of U.S. citizens?

Where is the evidence of gratitude in lining up for routine doctor visits at a hospital's emergency room?

Where is the sorrow and dismay when those emergency rooms close because they cannot operate for nothing?

Where is the gratitude in demands for all signs, all recorded messages, etc., be in another language besides English?

This could go on and on. No doubt Mr. Elder has a generous heart. Heaven knows his mind is expansive in knowledge.

Most Americans, however, are not quite ready to say, okay, it's all right. No problem. We'll take the reins from here. All you have to do is exist.

No, we are not ready for that. Our gratitude will be evident when the stupendous messes created by the illegal alien problem are cleaned up. Let's not hold our breath.

AND BY THE WAY ---
Some of my ancestors were here on American soil -- and had been for unknown generations -- when the first of my English ancestors set foot here before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Needless to say, I feel right at home. Always have. Always will.

But first we need to take care of that I.A. mess.

****************************************************

NOTE: I did not write that about the words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, wiseone did (Thursday, July, 26, 2007 1:17 PM).

As for the rest of your post,

How did we manage to "survive and prosper" despite the immigrants who passed through Ellis Island?

Well, Ellis Island opened on January 1, 1892 and was closed in November 12, 1954. In the 62 years of operation it processed only 12 million immigrants, or an average of 193'548 immigrants per year. So the immigration rate back then was not as out of control as it is today. Today we allow almost 1 million people to legally immigrate each year, and if you take the worst case scenario of 20 million illegals who have entered the U.S. since the Simpson-Mazzoli Act passed in 1986 that is almost another 1 million per year. Imagine the situation if we had today's rate of immigration (approx 2 million a year total) back when Ellis Island was operating.

Oh, and we managed to also have the worst depression in our nations history in in 1929, 37 years after Ellis Island opened. And in that 62 year span we also fought in 2 World Wars and the Korean War. The depression and those wars resulted in the loss of many U.S. citizens lives so the immigrants helped offset the short life expectancy back then. Our life expectancy today is much higher than it was in the early part of the 20th century. In the 1890's the life expectancy was about 43 years old. By the 1950's it had risen to about 68 years old. And today it is up to about 77 years old.

So we do not need as many immigrants today to offset the lives lost at early ages or in wars like we did 100 years ago, yet we are allowing (either legally or illegally) 100 times more immigrants into the country each year.

Could we be setting ourselves up for yet another "great" depression, maybe even one that makes the 1929 one look like a minor dip in market trends?

Breaking news
The Senate approved $3 billion for border security. YAWN.

Excuse me for not getting too excited. How many miles of fence have they built? 13 or something like that.

Bush's writing hand must be getting tired. He has vetoed more spending bills in the last month than he has in seven years. When it comes border spending, Bush is a fiscal hawk.

A little advice from an old timer!
Folkartblonde, You forgot to mention that we might ask Larry Elder if he would like to return to Mexico and live there. Start throwing the employers of illegal aliens in jail, and fine them plenty. Next, vote the Senators and Representatives out of their cushy jobs and pass a law that no former elected officials, can hold a lobbyist job for ten years from the time their government employment is over. This will help some of them understand that they are not obeying our laws either, just like the illegal aliens. Should you ever be confronted by one of the elected elite who supported amnesty for these felons, turn your back on them and inform them you do not shake hands with traitors. STand up America and fight the Beltway Bullies and treat them as they should be treated, like your employees, and that is exactly what they are. Americans treat their elected officials like visting royalty. Your built their egos, now see if you are smart enough to tear them down. Toss the illegals out of America. I use my debit card often, and i am in a deep Sooth state, while my bank is in California. It takes on the average of ten seconds or less, to confirm the transaction. If Mastercard can keep track of my account in under ten seconds, then we should hire them to keep track of our illegal alien population. It is easy, but Americans are easily told and persuaded, that it is a huge problem to keep track of illegal aliens. It is not. Remove their jobs, take away the welfare, stop the free medical, stop educating their children and witness their massed millions moving toward the border, like the buffalo of old, they too shall pass into history as the illegal immigration that failed.

Beyond the pale
I much admire your more than adequate reply to Mr. Elder. You covered it all very nicely and this article will reduce his readership greatly, and I am one of those he just lost. Mr. Elder has quite possibly lost his identity and feels more in step with those from South of the Border. Got news for you Elder, they read La Opinion and not your syndicated rags. You step well when you march with the MSM, Larry, just keep on marching right on over the border. I feel that the market will show today that one Thomas Sowell is worth at least 50,000 Larry Elders. Thanks beyond one, you did better than good.

Sorry Abby
While I am not in any form of agreement with the Mad Bishop, this dude has his facts on Ms. Lazarus correct. Look it up in your Wikipedia. It is one of my favorite poems. Sorry, give credit to this crazy cleric...

I see several problems with your example. First, the reason they don't make a person travelling on a US passport to "prove" that you are going home is because they assume that an American will want to return to the US and that Americans in general obey laws. Second, you failed to provide the Brazilian policy on people from other countries and whether they have to "prove" that they will go home. This is similar to Mexico whining about the US having border security and wanting to detain and deport illegals while at the same time they have border security on their other borders, detain, and deport anyone that enters Mexico illegally.

Yes, before the United States was even established, "the rest of the world" had many good ideas. (Although you might want to double-check the "ALL our 1st Amendment freedoms" claim; I suggest you start by googling "history of Anglican church.")

The point was, SINCE the establishment of the US, all of the philosophies I mentioned have sprung up. (Well, of course, jihadism is as old as Islam itself, but they weren't able to anything about it until the Carter administration.) So being considered crazy by the "rest of the world" TODAY is, I admit, not an extreme concern for me.

I thank you, BTW, for actually providing a dictionary definition of your term. Most leftists don't. To address your points that followed:

It may be "hyperpatriotic" believe the US is the world's first or only free Representative Democracy, but since I never claimed that it's irrelevant to this discussion.

Deeming the movement for English to be America's official language to be hyperpatriotic is a logical fallacy.

Disdain for "multiculturalism" may or may not be hyperpatriotism, depending on the definition of multi-culti.

Then, I asked,

"You are, then, PRO-illegal immigration?"

TL: "I am." (You then appended a lot of pro-illegal verbiage, but I'll spare the readers a repeat.)

DNC: "What "race," precisely, is involved?"

TL: "Oh, please. If white protestant french-canadians were crossing our border in droves illegally, white, protestant American conservatives would not be this upset (you know, xenophobia?). It's been obvious in conservatism before."

With all due respect, you're a liar and a hypocrite. You are accusing conservatives (and by extension me personally) of xenophobia, with zero evidence from my part, while indulging in xenophobia (of conservatives) yourself.

TL: "Berlin and Hamburg could never have been Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We could never do that to White people!"

V-E Day was May 8, 1945. The first A-bomb TEST -- not working weapon, TEST -- occurred on July 16, 1945. PERHAPS that might have had more to do with the non-use of the bomb against the Nazis. (You might also google "Dresden", while you're doing research.)
