Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

England? The country's socialist Labor Party now favors privatization and expects, within two years, to triple the number of private-sector surgical procedures.

France? Nearly 13,000 people died in the summer of 2003. Why? The number suffering from the heat so overwhelmed the French health-care system that hospitals simply stopped answering their phones and ambulance attendants told people to take care of themselves. The majority of the 13,000 died from simple dehydration.

To address the "crisis" of the medically uninsured, Moore follows down the same dreary path of those who wish to improve America's education -- ignoring the benefits of competition. Why, for example, do elective medical procedures -- those not covered by health-care insurance -- become increasingly affordable? Cosmetic surgery procedures, nose jobs, breast implants, hair grafts, facelifts and vision-corrective eye surgery steadily decline in price.

Stifling regulations, price controls and outright attacks on free market medicine make things worse. A decade ago, an entrepreneur who operates a for-profit medical school in the Caribbean island of Dominica attempted to build one in America. He scouted the country and figured that Wyoming's doctor shortage created ideal conditions for a for-profit medical school. Compared to the national average of one doctor for every 441 people, Wyoming had only one doctor for every 642 people.

But local doctors pounded the table, warning that the medical school would produce unqualified doctors. Never mind that 92 percent of students graduating from his off-shore medical school passed their U.S. basic level tests on their first try, a slightly higher rate than the U.S. and Canadian average. Wyoming doctors and the national accrediting agency for medical schools successfully fought the proposed school.

If you consider our current health-care system "Sicko," just wait until Dr. Moore takes charge.

Great comments, I am in a small business and have always found health care is a big problem. For those that work for large corps. and such always think that american health care is the best. Well hasn't been for me and my family and others like me. My daughter has needed a surgury for three years now but we can't afford it yet and we have insurance. Recently looked into getting that operation this summer and found out our insurance covers almost nothing. No let me correct that, it pays for nothing. All it does is negotiates a better price. But if you try to negotiate a price on your own you can forget it - full price only! The system is detached from its consumers and there is no real competition. It's broke!!

Moore is wrong, but . . .
I think Michael Moore feels at home in Cuba, because he is simply a communist. He seems to believe that life together means that the government should run everything and that they would run it better (for the benefit of all), especially if people like him (who really care) were in charge. Of course, he is wrong, because this system has been proven to be a dismal failure.

That being said, our health care system is a big problem for me. I am not particularly concerned about who has health insurance, I am much more concerned about the sky rocketing cost of healthcare. Why is the inflation rate in health over 10% when regular inflation is below 3%? Where is this money going?

If the rising costs are not figured out, we will have socialized system because only the top earners will be able to afford to pay. Insurance premiums have been rising to the point that people like me, (I have a masters degree, but work in Christian ministry so I do not make a lot of money), cannot afford to buy a house and keep good insurance for my family. Many of my friends with families are in the same situation. We live health lifestyles, but still end up paying $800/ month for health insurance with $500 deductibles and 80/20 costs after that.

Even if your work place does have group insurance, you still pay half the premium. This may not seem like much to someone making $75000 + a year, but for family people making anything under $50000 a year, health care is one of the major costs of life.

My wife and I carry a major medical insurance and are trying to put money in an HSA, but for the moment we are not succeeding. My 4 kids are covered by a state sponsored health plan, and without it we would be broke and have to sell our house.

I do not have a solution, because I do not understand why the cost are rising so much, but if they continue to do so, more and more people will be squeezed to the point that they begin to rely on state sponsored solutions. I realized that this puts even more pressure on those who are paying privately, but what are we to do. If the industry does not figure it out they will eventually all be working for the government.
