Seattle’s Guilt-Tripping Battles

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?


Thanks to Seattle Public Schools’ race-obsessed, guilt-tripping, finger-pointing bureaucrats, it can’t seem to stay out of the news.

The beleaguered school system had a policy of using skin color as a tiebreaker to achieve an arbitrary racial balance when assigning students to schools, in violation of the Equal Protection Clause and a state law barring the practice. The case currently is before the Supreme Court.

The system is looking for a new superintendent, and school board member Darlene Flynn, who is black, caused a stir when she recommended that superintendent candidates have a “clear understanding of institutionalized oppression,” according to The Seattle Times (“Racism tough to tackle – or even talk about – for Seattle School Board,” 3/29/07)

At least one of Flynn’s colleagues, board president Cheryl Chow, wanted to know what institutionalized oppression looked like. “What would be the correct answer? A correct answer in whose definition? I don't know if there is a 100 percent right answer.”

Reason prevailed, and the board toned down the job description to “institutional factors contributing to the achievement gap.”

Seattle is only one of many government school systems across the country caught up in race-obsessed, pseudo-intellectual, indecipherable, vacuous claptrap about “institutionalized oppression,” and its bureaucrats are no strangers to pushing incendiary and unsupportable assertions.

Last year, head of the school system’s Office of Equity and Race Relations Caprice Hollins, also black, caused a flood of criticism when she posted an inane statement on the web site called “Definitions of Racism.” This language, found under “Cultural Racism,” provoked the most outrage (emphasis added):

Those aspects of society that overtly and covertly attribute value and normality to white people and Whiteness, and devalue, stereotype, and label people of color as “other”, different, less than, or render them invisible. Examples of these norms include defining white skin tones as nude or flesh colored, having a future time orientation, emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology, defining one form of English as standard, and identifying only Whites as great writers or composers.

In other words, long-term planning, goal-setting, and speaking proper English are white traits that shouldn’t be foisted on blacks, and it is racist to define these things as beneficial. This is what passes for intelligent discourse in government schools, and your taxes pay for it.

Has Hollins ever wondered if racial disparities like the achievement gap exist because some blacks fail to speak standard English, plan for the future, save money, set goals, and accept personal, individual responsibility?

Doubtful. People like Hollins enjoy spouting high-falutin’ rhetoric for its own sake, crafting nonsensical statements, and trying to make whites responsible for black students’ underachievement. After much ridicule, Hollins removed the original statement (retrieved from The Internet Archive) and replaced it with a benign yet equally silly statement.

Hollins recently admitted to The Seattle Times that even she, a die-hard, diversity-obsessed devotee, could not find an institutionally racist program in the system. With nowhere else to turn, she pointed to summer vacation – summer vacation – as “an example of systemic problems” because black children fall even further behind.

Bureaucrats like Flynn and Hollins are living in a fantasy world. Hope for closing the achievement gap lies not in guilt-tripping whites but in promoting good study habits, encouraging individuals to work hard, be responsible for their own behavior, and learn to express themselves clearly, while urging parents to get involved in their kids’ education. All of this requires long-term planning, goal-setting, “individualism,” and speaking proper English.

But those are “white” values, so nevermind.

As a nurse...
it has been my experience that the Black community is a myth. Just sit in a busy emergency room and see how many black Americans have friends or family stay with them vs. dropping them off and leaving. Compare that to whites, hispanics and asians.

Summer Vacation?

Doesn't everyone fall behind during summer break? I mean, doesn't everyone lose a bit of their knowledge during that three-four month period - including whites and Hispanics? Do they mean to say that blacks should go to school year-round to gain some kind of advantage?

This is typical bureaucratic feel-good mumbo-jumbo: the problem is not the student; it's the oppressive societal mechanisms.


Pure BS
Political correctness is going to kill any achievements that ANY kid can make. For crying out loud, they are all not Einsteins and they certainly don't learn at the same pace.
But, if we keep giving in to stereotypes and such, why even bother to waste education dollars when we already "know" they will fail because of societal labels? Get it?

It IS institutional
There is nothing more "institutional" than the bigotry of low expectations.

Is ther any "institution" that "devalues people of color" than the Seattle School System?"Devalued as delicate floweres requiring special attention?

Hollins is correct, but not for her expressed reasons:

Collective ideology
The "collective ideology" mentality prevalent in Seattle schools was a prime factor in my daughter and son-in-law moving from Seattle to Nebraska. They wanted their children to learn how to compete and succeed. Their son came home from kindergarten having played a new game. It was "musical chairs", but no chairs were ever removed. They just marched around and then all sat down when the music stopped. That was the clue it was time to leave.

Why Da'Juan can't read
Flynn and Hollins are glowing examples of a description I first heard applied to the late Howard Cosell, a person educated beyond their intellect. Exempting children from educational standards because they are "racist"(Not) only plants the seeds of entitlement and victimhood deeply in the fertile minds of little kids. "Is school work hard? Don't worry, you don't have to study, in fact you should drop out ASAP, cause school is just the man's way of conditioning you to life in prison". At least the Seattle school board isn't the train wreck that Detroit's is. Most of that city's school buildings are falling apart ant the new ones are so full of shoddy construction they are not useable, while board members ride in limos, attend conferences first class, and pocket as much bling as they can get their hands on.

New Candidate
Their new school board candidate must have a "clear understanding of institutionalized oppression." Does that mean they are looking for an oppressor? A few come to mind, the ayatollahs in iran, kim il sung in korea, is bull connors still around?

Bad parents
Said it once, and I'll say it a thousand times: only bad parents (or poverty stricken) send their kids to public schools.

A question of Framing
If one works hard, stays our of trouble, studies intently, works towards and acheives goals, maintains perspective, speaks properly, and takes responsibility for their mistakes, are they exhibiting sucessful behavior or "acting white?"

If you want the sucess white people acheive, one would think the best way to get it is to do what they do. Alternatively, you can reject it and create a fantasy definition of sucess/oppression. Since that's what's been done for two generations now, one has to ask: "How's that working out for you?"

A fundamental question
to paraphrase Tammy Bruce:

"If your power comes from being a victim, where is your incentive to become a non-victim? To do that is to lose your power."

Victimhood is a self-perpetuating behavior with nowhere to go but down.

Re: "Black" English
Communication is the first fundamental of human relations. Humans created language to serve this function.

It is typical and indicative of the self-defeating agenda of racial victimhood hustlers that they complain about cultural segration at the same time they are insisting that "black" English, or ebonics, be treated on a par with grammatically correct English.

This insistence is so pervasive that many blacks won't even use the word "ebonics". They have altered this to "u-bonics".

Our Constitution is written in English. So is the Declaration of Independence. So are all of the laws, codes, regulations, standards, and executive orders that have been enacted since these two founding documents that have promoted and ensured the freedom and equality of blacks in this country (including the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965).

If American blacks want a separate culture within our borders they can retrace their roots from Africa, using DNA if necessary, and import their ancestral culture(s). Another acceptable alternative is to join the melting pot and Americanize themselves (those who choose to do this will find it has enormous advantages).

What is not ever going to be acceptable, and what will not ever work, is to insist on creating a new, separate culture for all people of African dissent as if all black-skinned people are homogenous (all the while complaining that white people think all blacks are alike), doing so in purposeful defiance of the predominant culture of the land, and then complaining that this new, artificial "culture" is not treated as "equal" to the predominant melting pot culture that immigrants of allother cultures have accepted or joined.

Darlene Flynn and the School Board are among the worst RACISTS in Seattle. Racism is racism no matter which color someone is racist against. Flynn is anti-white racist. She should be ridden out of town on a rail by decent people.

Job description for Prison Guards?

Institutional Racism
There is an excellent example of institutional racism in America; bilingual education. The underlying philosophy of bilingual education is that the children of hispanic immigrants are not as intelligent as their european and asian counterparts. Therefore they require additional instruction in their native language (spanish) that is not necessary for the other immigrant groups.

As an american of hispanic descent I find this attitude by education system in this country both demeaning and completely unnecessary. It's high time that the minority communities realize that the 'institutionalized racism' in this country actaully comes from the political left, which has a vested interest in keeping minorities at the low end of the socio-economic spectrum for political power.

Yet another reason - - -
- - - why it's called the Socialist Soviet of Seattle --- the fact that they entertain nutcases like this constantly. Oh well......

And that's just another part of the equasion why I chose to depart that sorry city/area....

The Elected School Board
My presumption is that the quoted school board members were elected to their positions. Throughout our country, responsible, thoughtful, and motivated adults who have a pro-active interest in our young achieving an education that prepares them for the future are opting out of participating in the public school system. They withdraw their children from the local public school system or move to that rare community with an outstanding public school system and tend to participate on boards of private or charter schools.
What's left for public school elected positions all too often tend to be creatures of teacher unions, academics from pc colleges, and single issue ideologues. All really are isolated from the children who are not seen as individuals but as pawns for their particular points of view.
In Ms. Barber's article, one sees no thoughts for the children in any of the vapid commentaries by the school board members. Poor Seattle!!!

Racist Seattle?
The irony is that Seattle must be one of the least bigoted cities on earth. We have a woman governor who succeeded a Chinese-American governor. We have two women senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell. King County, which is the county that Seattle is in, just renamed itself Martin Luther King County, and the county logo is the image of Dr. King. The King County Executive, Ron Sims, is African-American. A former mayor, recently replaced, Norm Rice, is African-American. The retiring school superintendent, Raj Manhas, is Indian-American. This city is a great and diverse city in the best sense of the word with large populations of immigrants from all over the planet. This is not a "some of my best friends are black" city. The people who complain about our institutional racism are race-baiters who make their living by being dissatisfied. Their complaints about oppression are simply a way to advertise themselves and secure their positions in a highly competive victimhood industry.

So.......
.....I am wondering what Hollins must think of the success of people like Representatives Chisolm, Conyers, J.C. Watts, Rangel and others in addition to General Powell, Maya Angelou, Chief Justice Marshall, Robert McNair, Michael Anderson and their fellow black astronauts as well as Stanford alums Tiger Woods and Secretary of State Rice. The late and great coach Eddie Robinson's players were talented individuals whose only 'collectiveness' was on the playing field. It sounds to me that she must have been one of those who had one of those long summer vacations! SHEESH!!!

Can anyone help me understand ...
how it is that "having a future time orientation" and "emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology" can be listed among the evil characteristics of an oppressive society? It is as if these were values forced on the exploited by the exploiters in order to maintain the status quo and keep them in subjugation. And yet are these not among the values honored by the founders of our country?

"Future time orientation" and "individualism" in this context sound like code words for two out of a constellation of attitudes which create and sustain a racist society. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how that could be so. Whether or not you agree with it, can any of you help me to understand the rationale?

Hmm... Maybe Dr. Leno Graglia was right
When I attended the Univeristy of Texas, a major contraversy erupted in 1997. This is about the time when the Supreme Court had decided the Hopwood v Univ of Texas Law school. The Hopwood case was a reverse discrimination case and the Court decided that UT Law must not use race to decide admissions. The Texas State Attorney further interpreted the decision to mean that no Texas public universities could use race as a factor for admission.

Liberal student groups tried to urge UT to defy the the State Attorney and reinstate the race based admission policy. The Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) was formed that year to oppose the liberals on that and many other UT liberal nonsense. The YCT had asked Dr. Leno Graglia, a tenured UT Law professor to be their faculty advisor. When they had their press conference to announce themselves, the media focused on a statement that Dr. Gaglia made in answer to a question. He said (I can't quote directly) that in minority cultures, failure is not condemned and success is not encouraged.

You can imagine the storm that erupted. This was a white man who dared to speak the truth. The PC police came out in force, brought Jesse Jackson to campus to wag his finger, and even tried to get Ricky Williams to quit the football team (that was the year he won the Heisman).

As a black man, the whole incident was disturbing to me. All Dr. Graglia did was point out a possible fact that should be rationally examined. But rather than honestly participate in the arena of ideas, the liberal PC police tried to stifle debate and murder messengers. The question I kept coming to was: "What if he was right?"

Until we black americans honestly deal with our our faults and stop blamming white americans, we will always be passed up by other minorities. Thanks for pointing this out again Ms. Barber

Diversity is Balkanization
Multiculturalism and Diversity are code words designed to "guilt" Americans into buying into the notion that all cultures and societies are equal and that an "American" society is no better than any other. This ripping apart of the fabric of a "nation" into small, ethnic enclaves serves only to weaken America. Our strength lies in "unity" - a unity of language, of values, and of history. But those who decry America as a superpower and seek to bring us down to a lowest common denominator cannot allow a national unity. Ergo, the worship at the altar of multiculturalism and diversity.


The legitimate goal of diversity

There is a legitimate purpose of diversity. If an individual is exposed to many cultures, many different kinds of people with many different kinds of backstories, experiences, attitudes, and ideas, the individual has a wider range of choices to make in his own life and presumably will benefit from one or more of these additional choices.

Also, the liberal concept of "tolerance" is true in theory. Children raised in an environment that includes a diverse group of people are less likely to be racist.

Unfortunately, the left has perverted the true concepts of diversity, just like it does with everything else, and in the process turned the potential advantages into disadvantages.

Instead of mixing kids of diverse cultures together so each can learn which aspects of other cultures can be used to improve their own lives, schools preach the victimhood of minorities. This teaches minority children they can never hope to fulfill their potential and teaches white children it's their fault.

The result is the reduction of all participants to the lowest common denominator. White kids learn victimhood and minorities learn to be racist.

Flesh-toned is not racist
I'm an Indian-American - my parents are from India but I'm American. While I am proud of my Indian heritage and still do some culturally Indian activities, I am an American.

Anyway, for tan or brown or black people, obviously the word "flesh toned" to denote a pale color is ridiculous, but it's also ludicrous to somehow decide this is part of institutionalized racism. It's like deciding that the name "Friday", which is derived from the Norse Goddess Freya (I think) is a form of institutionalized Teutonicism.

The English language has its quirks. Since we all speak English here, I think it's more important for us various brown-skinned people to become articulate in proper English so we can succeed than to focus on a few seemingly racist quirks.

As Lanny's post makes clear, and as the examples of many, many great "people of color" such as Maya Angelou, Justice Thomas, Condi Rice, and so on make clear, race is irrelevent when it comes to achievement and intelligence. If people, regardless of race, used their energy to develop their skills and character instead of wasting time on crap, think of what we'd accomplish.

Who opens more doors for minorities?
Is it the consummated collectivists, ideologically driven, small talented bureaucrats?

Or is it the talented individual personalities that do not narrowly focus on ‘racism’ the ones that open increased acceptance and inclusion for all minorities?

Maybe; for the betterment of all, we ought to re-examine how much we cuddle, isolate and protect, kids from confronting those who may not like them simply because of the color of their skin.

The victimology of the Left has more to do with those who specialize in the art of the shake-down and the whites who want at all cost to separate themselves from even the appearance of discrimination than, the real needs of people of color who knows that what does not kills you makes you stronger.

"(H)aving a future time orientation" implies that one plans for the future. "(E)mphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collectivist ideology" is self-explanatory. Translation; the speaker is opposed to individual initiative and accomplishment, and wants both ruthlessly suppressed in favor of rote collectivist learning and ultimately collectivist action, all carefully "guided" by an "enlightened elite'", i.e., people like the author of those words.

Which is what you get from trendy neo-Marxists masquerading as "multiculturalists". The end always justifies the means. Since the end is a sort of Soviet-style state (but run by the "enlightened" progressivists, of course), any action that can be taken to squelch the aspirations of the individual not only can, but must, be used. And the sooner they start, the better. Since they can't start when the child is in the cradle (yet....), they'll settle for starting with daycare and kindergarten.

Marx and Engels would be so proud of them.....

Seattle & Diversity
Though some dislike hearing it, Washingtonians are California wannabes....so many of them came from California, just like Oregonians, both are fully stocked with California escapees. I'm one myself, I just went even further up.

Seattle's penchant with "diversity" is well reflected by MarkMcLemore who drones on about how they've become the World Center of Wonderful. Yeah, let's go for a drive in all the affluent Black communities like Bellevue,Mark, show me all those upscale communities of Diversity, why don't you.

The first Black State School Superintendent in the USA was Wilson Riles in 1970. Jerry Brown was the Governor, he failed in his run for the Presidency and eventually became the Mayor of Oakland when he endorsed Ebonics.

After some years of teaching and as a school principal, Riles joined the California State Department of Education in 1958 as a consultant, its first ever African-American professional employee. In 1970 he was elected state superintendent of schools and was reelected in 1974 and 1978. He left office in 1983 to form an educational consulting firm, Wilson Riles and Associates, Inc.

He was the first African-American ever elected to a state-wide office in California and the first elected African-American state superintendent of schools. At the very least,they didn't have to import him from Philadelphia.

I'm one of the category of "minorities" which is sick and tired of seeing the bleeding heart liberals using the minority issue as a stepping stone to their agenda of government control of
our lives as though we lack the capacity to do so for ourselves.

Enough with this phony forced diversity,it comes down to individual desire to succeed, not your color, your race or your religion. There are hundreds of thousands of people in the USA who, as I did, are living proof that we didn't need Government to get us there and they are of every race, heritage and economic background.

She is courageous for writing this. She will be vilified and verbally assaulted, at least, by the self-proclaimed "tolerance" crowd for daring to write such things.

I'd bet a lot that you've never read anything she wrote. Many people feel she has been given too much credit just because she's black.

Just because Oprah likes someone doesn't mean she is actually *great* at what she does.
