Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

On the April 11 episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, self-admitted atheist Maher slandered Pope Benedict XVI in the name of comedy.

Maher said Pope Benedict is the “cult leader” of a “child-abusing religious cult.”

Regular viewers of his program were not surprised by the verbal assault since Maher has made no secret of his loathing for religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular.  The comments are just the latest in a long history of hate-filled “comedy” from Maher.

On April 11 Maher compared the Pope and the Catholic Church to the polygamist cult in Texas that has been in the news recently. Here is a partial transcript of what Maher said:

“Whenever a cult leader sets himself up as God’s infallible wingman, here on Earth, lock away the kids. Which is why I’d like to tip off law enforcement to an even larger child-abusing religious cult. Its leader also has a compound, and this guy not only operates outside the bounds of the law, but he used to be a Nazi and he wears funny hats. That’s right, the Pope is coming to America this week and ladies, he’s single!

“Now I know what you’re thinking: ‘Bill, you shouldn’t be saying that the Catholic Church is no better than this creepy Texas cult.’ For one thing, altar boys can’t even get pregnant. But really, what tripped up the little cult on the prairie was that they only abused hundreds of kids, not thousands, all over the world. Cults get raided, religions get parades. How does the Catholic Church get away with all of their buggery? Volume, volume, volume!”

Maher went on to say that before Benedict became the pope he “wrote a letter instructing every Catholic bishop to keep the sex abuse of minors secret until the statute of limitations ran out. And that’s the Church’s attitude: ‘We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.’”

As the Catholic League for Religious Freedom noted in a press release April 14, before he became the pope, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger “had absolutely nothing to do with the policing allegations of sexual abuse until 2002, after the scandal erupted.”

Branding the Pope a Nazi is another of Maher’s slanders.  As a young boy Pope Benedict was forcibly conscripted to join the German Youth organization, as all young German boys were at the time.  This is a matter of public record which the Pope has himself addressed.  For Maher’s “comedy” truth is irrelevant. (For the Newsbusters analysis of this issue, click here.)

Maher’s attacks on Catholicism are nothing new. Even the death of Pope John Paul II was fodder for Maher, who just days after the pontiff’s death in April 2005 said on his program:

“For those who did not make the funeral, the Vatican has asked that in lieu of flowers, just stop touching your d---.”

“People waited in line for 24 hours to see the pope’s body and when they got to see the pope they smelled worse than he did.”

In 2002 Maher publicly stated, “I have hated the church way before anyone else.  I have been pounding religion for nine years on this show.”  The show he referenced was Politically Incorrect which then aired on ABC.  ABC dropped the show from its lineup and Maher took his bigoted routine to HBO.

The Culture and Media Institute, with the help of the Catholic League, has compiled a list of some of the vitriol Maher has directed at Catholics.

·        November, 1999: “Catholics practice what they want to practice.  They go to see the Pope ‘cause he’s a big celebrity, but they go home and they masturbate….”

·        August, 2000: “Priests, a lot of times, molest boys, okay?  They are celibate and it’s a magnet for homosexual pedophiles.” Actor William McNamara used Maher’s show to say the Catholic Church should allow priests to marry “to give the altar boys’ rectum a break.”

·        March, 2002: “Before puberty, I would say nobody caused me more pain than the Catholics … I apparently was not attractive enough to be hit on [by priests].”

·        May, 2002: “… I offer this modest proposal that the Catholic Church just drop the pretense and just go gay.  Just come out of the confessional.  Preach the sermon on the mountain. Embrace it. Let the straight people be Baptists.  It’s high time you gay Catholics stood up and announced to the world, “We’re here, we’re queer, get Eucharist.”

·        May, 2003: Maher had a limited run on Broadway with a show titled “Bill Maher: Victory Begins at Home.”  In it he included these pieces of scripted “humor.”

“The problem is they drill religion into your head when you are very young.  Well, when you are four years old you believe in Santa Claus, too. Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, the Virgin Birth, sure!  When you’re a priest everyday spewing this bulls--- about the apple and the snake etc. you can see him just saying, ‘Ah, F--- it, just blow me, kid!”

“It’s so gay, the Church!  With the robes and the smoke and kneeling in front of the priest with your mouth open eating God.”

·        May, 2007:  “And it's easy to start a religion! Watch, I'll do it for you: I had a vision last night! A vision! The Blessed Virgin Mary came to me – I don't know how she got past the guards – and she told me it's high time to take the high ground from the Seventh Day Adventists and give it to the 24-hour party people. And what happens in the confessional stays in the confessional. Gay men, don't say you're life partners; say you're a nunnery of two. "We weren't having sex, officer, I was performing a very private Mass, here in my car. I was letting my rod and staff comfort him. Take this and eat of it, for this is my roommate Barry. And for all those who believe there is a special place for you in Kevin."

·        January, 2008: You can’t be a rational person six days of the week and put on a suit and make rational decisions and go to work and, on one day of the week go to a building and think you’re drinking the blood of a 2,000-year-old space god.  That doesn’t make you a person of faith … that makes you a schizophrenic.”  On a different show he said, “…UFOs are a lot more likely than a space god [that] flew down bodily and you know who was the Son of God and you know had sex with a Palestinian woman.”

Maher’s anti-Catholic, anti-religion rhetoric is part of his schtick as a comedian.  It has also been given a very public platform, first by ABC and now by Time Warner and HBO.  Offensive material like this is also the cornerstone upon which Maher will build the publicity machine for his upcoming “anti-religion documentary” Religulous, due to be released in theaters in July.

His agenda in all of this is clear: to tear down religious belief and believers.  In so doing he attacks a clear majority of Americans and a foundation of American society. When confronted by the Catholic League on why it continues to give Maher air time, HBO stated that Maher’s anti-Catholic remarks were a matter of “creative freedom.”  One wonders if HBO would be so sanguine if Maher’s vitriol was regularly aimed at Muslims.

Shells, c'mon!
You say you're not religious because your "leftist liberal" parents "detest God" and kept "it" from you? Really?

Why don't I believe you? You sound pretty religious to me. And while I'm aware lots of people don't believe in god...I've never met anyone who detests Him. Leftist liberal? In the words of Col. Nathan Jessup, is there another kind?

Oh well. Taking you at your word, if indeed there is a hell I hope it's reserved for presidents who invade countries without provocation, torture prisoners, spy on Americans without warrants and behave like kings instead of heads of representative democracies...not comics who get a little carried away.

There You Go Again ...

... clinging to your guns and religion, all you bitter, bitter people. ;-)

For the Record.
"One wonders if HBO would be so sanguine if Maher’s vitriol was regularly aimed at Muslims."

Just for the record, it is.

Given how much hatred and derision is heaped upon atheists on this site, one has to wonder if this just isn't a case of being able to dish it out but not being able to take it.

post holer
When pray tell did Maher say anything about Islam that is anywhere near as offensive as what he has been saying about Catholicism?

When and what?

George W. Bush offends Protestants
http://catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=12329

"One, he speaks for millions,” the president said. “Two, he doesn't come as a politician; he comes as a man of faith; and Three, I so subscribe to his notion that there’s right and wrong in life, that moral relativism undermines the capacity to have hopeful and free societies. I want to honor his convictions, as well.”

I find this comment highly offensive on many grounds.

1.) The pope doesn't speak for me, I'm Methodist.

2.) The pope is not the moral leader of this country.

3.) The president is not the moral leader of this country. He is exactly what the Constitution says he is: commander in chief. Given that then politicians and heads of states should be accorded the highest honors.

4.) I'm deeply offended as a Methodist. What does Bush think Protestants were protesting if not the bogus moral teachings of some human's notions over another? Protestants firmly believe that it is every persons personal relationship with God that defines morality as taught by the Bible.

Quite frankly, Kristen Fyfe should be far more concerned with the elevation of the Pope by the conservative party in this country as something higher than an other man in this world. Bill Maher is a joke. The president treating the Pope as something other than any other Christian is insult to all protestants.

If American Catholics took it seriously
--
...there might be something to get bothered about, but apart from the exceptionally obsessed (like the people in the Catholic League), most of us don't care about guys like Maher.

Remember, America is very much a Protestant country, and Catholic immigrants - from southern Germany, from northern Italy, and then later from Poland and *il Mezzogiorno* (my bunch) - have had to get used to a lot of crap about our religion.

Maher is just more crap.

*Shrug!*

One thing, though.

I was trained as an altar boy prior to Vatican II (and therefore had to memorize the Mass in Latin).

Five years of Sunday services and Holy Days of Obligation and First Fridays and a change to the English vernacular and they turned the altar around and people used to come to the 9 o'clock mass just to see me trip over my cassock and go arse-over-elbows down the steps....

And not *ONCE* did any priest make a pass at me.

Some buncha pedophiles....

--

Bill Maher is a stooge
Bill is very proud of his vegan diet and his atheism. Good for him. But he is not very smart.

Christopher Hitchens hates religion. I disagree with him on that point, but at least I can take his arguments seriously. Hitchens is a serious thinker.

Maher would like to believe he is smart too. But he is not.

Hey Bill?
I happened to watch that episode of Real Time.

I know you were raised Catholic and your mom was Jewish. Ask your Catholic and Jewish pals if they believe in evolution. Most do. Most believe the world is billions of years old (and even the Vatican does not dispute that).

As for the Catholic Church and pedophilia, he overstates it but has a point. The Church did make grave mistakes and frankly some of its members should answer for their crimes with more than just civil settlements. But Bill is not going to be subtle, he will overstate the issue because he still has baggage from being an ex Catholic.

No, Joe...
...Hitchens is the poser. Maher is smart, though I'm curious to know why you think he's not...other than the only-conservatives-are-smart thing, of course.

Maher's an Idiot
This Pope is against Bush's war and thinks muslims and Christian should work together for peace, no one should attack him.

You confuse observation with
slander.

You need to remember: there's no such thing as the right to not be offended.

Love Bill Maher
but he does make some stupid comments at time. But his show is excellent and of course real!!!!

End of Discussion? NOT!
You're full of it. The church does NOT protect pedophiles as a rule. Some rotten bishops did. The pope cannot control every bad decision some bishops or cardinals make.

If you left the church because of some sinful priests, you're an idiot. That's like leaving the church because Judas betrayed Jesus.

The most important point
For the sake of this discussion, it doesn't matter if Maher has a "good show"; it doesn't matter if there were or are pedophile priests in the Catholic church; it doesn't matter if Pope Benedict was a member of the Nazi youth organization as a child; what matters is that Maher is a vile, awful person, consumed by hatred. How can there be even one who would try to defend him?

He Did Lie About The Pope Being A Nazi..
I do think Bill Maher should at least apologize for lying about Pope Benedict about being a Nazi. He had done it out of fear of being persecuted, and in his heart was against the atrocities that were being caused by the Nazis.

That said, however, Maher hit it on the nail at how much the Catholic Church itself has become so corrupt. If it isn't for the hypocrisy of the pedophile priests, it should at least be about Pope Pious XII, who did support Hitler's campaign at exterminating the Jews. Well, that's what my father told me. He happens to be Jewish and a devout supporter of Israel, so much so to the point that he views all Palestinians, including women and children, as subhuman monsters who hate the Jews. Well, maybe Hamas, but still...
I've come to the conclusion that my father is a very bitter man who happens to hate the Catholic Church. I certainly have learned some of his bitterness and have had a hard time to come to terms with it every time these ignoramuses at the CMI and the Catholic League make a whole lot of something out of nothing.

Pope, Nazis, etc.
Maher knows perfectly well that the 14-year-old Ratzinger was not a Nazi the way Goebbels was a Nazi. It's called a joke, people.

I will say, as an atheist, I do think the Church has gotten a bit of a bad rap over the sex abuse business. Most of the "abuse" involved willing teenagers, not little kids. Those willing teenagers by and large kept their mouths shut about it for years or decades until the smell of free money brought them out of the woodwork. However much I dislike religion, I dislike the systematized extortion that this so-called sex abuse scandal represents a whole lot more.

Atheists
Perhaps he would like to take on the subject about the atheist-communists (there is NO other kind) killing 100s of millions this century and past. But he'll probably deny reality like a good liberal and continue to use disinformation like a good liberal.

Bill Maher is a woosy...
...he doesn't have the gonads to say the same crap about Muslims. They'd have a fatwa on him before the show was done.

Buck - All the ''pedophilia'' noise...
--
...came to my attention only in the last six or seven years, and I was raised in the Roman Catholic Church, attended parochial schools through 12th grade, matriculated at a Jesuit college, and spent my Sundays as a youngster either in the choir, as an altar boy (the parish was always short of volunteers for that miserable job; my cousins dragooned me into it), and as a lector.

I never once experienced or even heard the faintest rumor of a priest approaching any kid for any purpose other than corrective (as in a swift whack upside the mastoid process) measures.

The Fathers were our teachers in school and in church, very much in loco parentis every damned place church activities ensued, and clobbered us with great vigor and regularity for the good of our souls.

We would no more have admitted the possibility of fraternization with those men than I would at present consider striking up a cordial relationship with a member of the Democratic National Committee.

Those priests were The Enemy.

We knew it. *They* knew it.

It was the natural order of things, and if I had to characterize my sentiments toward any one of the many Reverend Fathers in my life, I would have to reach back for analogy to a Hukbalahap insurrectado's regard for a member of the Kempeitai.

If it were as common as has been bruited about, I'd think that if I hadn't any personal experience therewith, you'd sure as hell have reason to believe I'd at least have heard a rumor or two about such gropings.

Nada. Niente. Bupkis.

Reminds me of the time in my early adolescence when I snuck access to a copy of *Forever Amber*, read through to the end of it, and wondered:

"*THIS* is what they've been making a big deal about?"

Inconsistencies
Shells wrote:

"Yes the Church has had their issues, and actually Pope Benedict made sure any cases of abuse were dealt with and the priests removed."

… and atheling wrote:

Would both of you please wake up and smell the communion wafers? Ratzinger is giving sanctuary to Law, the very guy who know for years that the abuse was going on, and whose only response was to shuffle paedophile priests around so they could keep molesting children. Law should be in MA, dealing with the legal consequences of his negligence (to say the least) instead of enjoying a cushy job at Santa Maria Maggiore.

So, no, Ratzinger didn't make sure everything was made right and yes, he is responsible for what happened because he's running the RCC.

Moreover, you're equally deluded if you think child abuse by Catholic priests is over. They continue to bugger kids worldwide. The only thing that sets the US apart is that many of the guilty priests got caught and the scandal was made public.

Check with Canonic Law experts, Roman Catholic authorities and other church insiders in the rest of the world, if you have access to them. They are freaking out about the volume of abuse that continues unchecked. My data comes from Latin America, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were exactly the same in other regions with large Catholic communities.

In view of this, Ratzinger is not only guilty of shielding one guilty Cardinal who got caught and ran to Rome instead of facing consequences. He's also guilty of turning a blind eye to many others who still hurt children.

So what?
I'd rather he be slandering the pope, a god wannabe, then our President.

You think because you have a subjective personal philosophy in life that is upheld by some guy in a dress and a tall hat, that everyone is supposed to give respect. You're wrong.

Respect comes to those who deserve it from those who wish to bestow it, you don't have a "right" to it like Liberals like to think about their almighty healthcare.

You want to be offended?

For what purpose do you seek to be offended?

What's your motive for being offended by someone's free speech?

Free speech is free speech; we have civil liberties to hear what we want to hear and to walk away and not hear what we don't want to hear.

You don't have a right to infringe on Bill's free speech civil liberties.

You can have all the distaste is the world for it, I support you in that quest - but you don't have a right to insist on any respect for anyone or anything simply because it exists.

Acknowledgement of another human being is all that is requested of others, but not required and not desired by some.

This is the problem Conservatives have, they want to play victim and demand something that is not theirs to demand. It's unfortunate because you start to sound like the crybaby liberals when you do.

Buck up!

Get a grip!

If you're not victimizing yourself you seem to think you're not living.

Just like the loon left liberals.

How pathetic.

Bill Maher
I don't know why anyone would be surprised, offended,or else even CARE what this person, thinks or says.He is just another entertainer. No better or worse than some of the others.

He is on a premium channel on my cable system.I long ago cancelled that station on my TV.If you don't like what he says, turn him off.

I dare say,if a conservative would say anything even close to being that offensive to another person, all h#ll would break loose.A liberal can do it without a peep from the masses and even be treated nicely by Larry King, etc.

If some of you posters have never watched him and listened to him,you have a treat in store. He will show you just how low and how depraved humans can get and still be called a "star". THAT IS IF YOU ARE A LIBERAL,LEFT-WING DEPRAVED PIECE OF GARBAGE.

Intolerance
Atheists are the most intolerant people; Preachers of hate. Postholer, Perry White, scooternyc, I could care less whether you believe in God or not. Most Christians don't care either. But your intolerance for people of religion is pretty childish. You make gay jokes about priests, but you liberals love gays. You make pedophelia jokes about priests, but you push for shorter sentences for child rapists. Have you been hurt by a Christian? Did you hear a Christian stand-up comic spewing hatred for atheists? Why do you hate Christians so much?

Perry White
"You say you're not religious because your "leftist liberal" parents "detest God" and kept "it" from you? Really?

Why don't I believe you? You sound pretty religious to me."

___________________

You don't know me, first of all, and I don't care if you believe me or not.

I'm a Jewish agnostic, if there is such a thing, and I never went to Temple as a child nor did I go to Hebrew school.

My parents trained myself and my siblings to mock religion. God wasn't real, God is fake, God is phony, and anyone who believes in it are weak minded. My brother and sister gave a lot of sport attacking anyone who happened to wear a cross or say anything like "God willing..." or what have you.

I happen to not believe in attacking people who have faith, I find it weak and vile. My family always felt vindicated making people cry, get red in the face, or feel humiliated simply because they went to church and prayed. My family enjoyed telling people their faith is a myth and a waste, which is not their annointed place in this world to do to others, although they felt like it.

I watched them and learned a lot. I learned it's very ugly to be a jerk. I have no belief system except that it's better to be kind to others instead of an antagonistic jerk.

Satisfied?

FD
Tell me, has the Catholic Church cornered the market on child molestation?

Trust me, I am no sympathizer for anyone who abuses a child. For me, they all deserve to die and I don't need to quibble over the details to decide this.

Back to my point, do you believe the Catholic Church has cornered the market on child molestation? I think not. Yes, it can and will continue because this world we live in produces sick b*stards everywhere in all walks of life and not just in the church.

Bill Maher gets his ratings on being a sensationalist pr*ck, it's called capitalism, and I'm all for it, I just refuse to watch him. Because if he attacks the church and the pope for child abuses, then is he telling his audience he is an advocate of children's rights?

If he is an advocate of children's rights, then why hasn't he attacked every public school, sports coach, camp counselor, father, uncle, brother, cousin, or men in general? Because as we know, and not trying to conjure a side discussion, primarily, men abuse children sexually.

So why hasn't Bill attacked men and only the Church for child abuse?

Has he given money or his time to any children's funds or movements to protect kids? Is he all about locking child molester's away and throwing away the key? Or just if they are priests?

I don't watch the show, I only come across the vile crap he spews in articles, so tell me, is he a champion of kids? Or is he just another atheist celebrity liberal who enjoys attacking anything religious people feel faith towards?

The Golden Rule
Scooternyc:

You say religious faith does is not required to value or believe in:

7) The Golden Rule.

From your comments, it doesn't appear that you do value or believe in it. Maybe you should take that off your list.

Bill Maher...
...like Al Franken, is a sad little man who is about as funny as a rotting corpse.

I'm an atheist and Maher's vicious attacks upon those who he hates - which is just about everyone but Rosie O'Donell - is apalling to me. Bill & Rosie are turds in the same cat box: tiresome, bitter, self-absorbed and clueless.

SJ Doc
I was also educated in Catholic schools from grades one to eight. I also never experienced any, nor heard of any, sexual abuse in school, church or bible studies.

I can't say the same for the four years I spent in public high school. Two teachers were fired for diddling students - one diddled underage girls, the other diddled an underage boy.

You are Right Kristen
Your last sentence says it all. Had Maher gone off on Muslims instead of Catholics HBO executives would have had a cow on the spot. I don't know whether this is preferential bigotry or the fact that some Muslims will kill you for dissing their religion whereas I don't think most American Catholics or other Christians will resort to violence. I work with a man who will debate hard and often on how bad religion is for society, how we are better off living a secular humanist type of life etc. However I notice his criticism is always directed towards Judaism and Christianity. He has expressed great respect for and defense of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and other non-Western oriented faiths. If you are against religion should that not include all beliefs or did I miss something?

Not to worry folks......
Bill Maher is, I believe, a baptised Catholic and half, or partly Jewish! That is the info I have on him!! That's why he hates himself so much and it explains his hatred for the Catholic Church.
But, the Catholic Church will still be standing tall and strong long after Billy, little nasty boy, is standing before his Creator, in Whom he doesn't believe, or, I should say, kneeling before his Creator and hearing Him say: "You rejected me on earth and now I say to you go where you have chosen while on earth"!! What a terrible rejection that will be for BM!!
Remember that every single person that lives or ever lived or will ever live will, at that future time, have to bend the knee and confess that JESUS CHRIST is LORD!!! And then, when it is too late to change their minds, will have to go to the "place" they have freely chosen!!

Let's just pray to God for BM (those initials fit him perfectly); that he will soon experience a complete Spiritual healing.

God's Church
It amazes me that if God does not exist, as atheists contend, why do they spend so much time defaming Him, attacking those who believe, and deending their position?

If there is no God, how can there be evil in the world? The fact that there is evil is proof that God exists.

Judaism and Catholicsm, with its links to Judaism, are the only faiths that trace their origins back to God, not to a human. God's church, our religion, just like a family, is made up of imperfect human beings. We support each other to learn and spread God's word, and to help each other live our faith and free ourselves from the mortal boundaries of this world.

Despite the endless efforts of those who persecute and hate, God's church has survived and continues to thrive. Those who hate only see bad in religion and fail to see the good, which greatly overshadows the bad.

I pray for those people who live in the slavery of hate, that they may be freed to live life more abundantly.

Easy Fix
Why dont the Catholics take a page from 'The Religion Of Piece' and generate an angry violent mob burning pictures of Mahr in front of the studio where his show is taped. The Pope could call for his assassination and promise the assassin front row seats in heaven. The editors of newspapers who show any support for free speech could be similarly threatened. Then sit back and watch the groveling apologies follow when these spineless cowards realize that they might have to stand up for their beliefs. The only reason these middle aged closet cases have the nerve to scream their diatribes at the church is that they know that there wont be any response; partly because nobody is watching or because people have become so jaded to this boring crap that it doesnt get any response.

Consider the source....
Take it for what it's worth.....from Maher. Haaaa. It does seem suspicious that he can get away with disrespecting the Pope and President Bush and of course HBO lets him get away with it. Sensationalism. Now.....IF.......he were to dis Islam, we all know what would happen. Not PC.
Even though catholicism's not so pristine past history still doesn't merit his verbal garbage.

Attn Bob C
"Bill Maher...
...like Al Franken, is a sad little man who is about as funny as a rotting corpse."

Al Franken is running for the Senate. That means people are going to vote to validate this kind of crap. Can Mahr be far behind if the retards in Minnesota reward Franken with a Senate seat?

funny thing
The funny thing about Maher is that he began his tv talk show career with Politically Incorrect which as the name suggests was primarily a vehicle for poking liberal dogma to show how intolerant liberals are. It ran into the problem that liberals aren't actually as intolerant as the silly myths about out of control political correctness suggests. The result is that he was able to generate much more publicity with less outrageous comments about the right than the left.

This may partly explain why he seems to have gotten more liberal over time. (In reality he is a bumper sticker libertarian, which is to say a libertarian whose values center around issues that make good applause lines). Another possibility is that the ineptitude of Bush has made him appear more liberal.

That Maher gets more attention for his attacks on Catholicism than his attacks on Islam is a result of the fact that Catholics have a better lobby in this country than do muslims. He is equally vicious in attacks on feminists, and other groups (although his animal rights position protects those groups when they do the same things that outrage him from feminists) but we hear about the attacks on catholics because of who squeals the loudest rather than because he is singling the one group out. Although his Catholic background may make him particularly sharp in his criticism of Catholicism.

Obvious poster lies
It is self evident for any who have ever watched Bill Maher that most of you have never watched his show and are commenting solely based on the nun wannabe's complaints.

For the Record:

Maher is frequently not funny.

He frequently asks and questions on public policy and actions.

He takes all religions to task. The pope, In the minds of many Americans, has yet to respond adequately on the Church's cover up and abetting of child rape. Maher has not been accused of Child Rape but you are slamming him because he is not respectful enough to the leader of an organization that abetted and covered up that child rape. I think some people in Town Hall have their priorities mixed up.

More, why are good conservatives paying to watch a liberal comedy? I could understand it if you paid to watch a conservative comedian like Dennis Miller - wait, I forgot. He's not funny and not on TV.

Bill Maher
I agree if Bill Maher talked about Islam the way he talked about Christianity/Catholisim he would be out of a job. There would be protest and treats of boycotts against Time Warner/Aol and any of there advertisers. Where is Brock Hussien Obama in all of this? If I recall correctly it was him who was the first to call for Don Imus's firing a year ago when he made the comments about the Rugerts Women's Basketball team. Rusty

Bill Maher is an entertainer
no more, no less!!!

Rock solid?
Lighten up, o believer. If we Americans are truly rock-solid in their religious faith, then no comedian, funny or not, will affect us.

Why are so many people afraid of Maher? It's because deep down they fear that audiences will question their faith upon encountering his routine. In other words, perhaps the "faithful" in this country aren't so rock-solid in their convictions after all. Comics such as Bill Maher and George Carlin expose that unpleasant possibility -- which is why, of course, the Catholic League finds them dangerous.

Bleeding Heart Liberal
Excuse me...Dennis Miller is funny (to me) and is on Fox,occasionally.Miller was once a 'bleeding heart liberal'..ahem...he was not funny then. Now he has changed some of his thinking, maybe come to his senses.Anyway,he is on the Bill O'reilly show one night each week.I think he has a radio talk show, too.

I agree. Why should a conservative PAY to get pummelled each week on Maher's show? He does have an 'equal opportunity ridiculing show',though and pokes fun at any and everyone. If it is what he thinks is funny,he will use them, and makes no exceptions.

Bill Maher...
...is a pathetic, but fairly typical, left-winger, who wants everyone to believe he is an intelligent voice worthy of public attention. The fact that a foul-tempered, ill-mannered, but slick clown like him is on television is more a comment on viewers and programmers than it is on him. Without a godless network and millions of godless sycophants this man of limited talent would not be in a position to continually outrage. Were he anything but a left-wing loon, apologies would be demanded and achieved and he would be censured by his employers or fired.

Maher
Over the top as he may be, Maher's probably closer to right than the pope.

Bill Maher
Is not that funny. I used to watch his show on ABC and it was mildly amusing at best. He is about as entertaining as Lewis Black and the recent efforts by Penn and Teller. If you want left-leaning humor that is not angry, jaded and mean-spirited then turn on John Stewart and The Colbert Report. I'm quite conservative and take exception to the leftward bent of the politics but they do make me chuckle and even laugh out loud sometimes.

Will
Wow are you a hypocrite. Maher saying all of these inaccurate, nasty things about Christians, Catholics and the Pope apparently really excites you. After all, it is just freedom of speech, right? But, boy, let someone say or write something similar about homosexuals and you will become the poster boy for suppression of "hate speech" and for boycotting, applying economic and political pressure on program sponsors, etc. It's always different when it is your ox being gored. We Christians are just intolerant of other person's views, right, Will? And you are not intolerant, but enlightened. Please illuminate the world for us poor, ignorant conservatives, we just can't figure it all out on our own. Try this, next time Mike Adams writes an article against the GLBT agenda why don't you keep your trap shut and ruminate on his first amendment rights? We'd love to NOT hear from you.

Bleeding Heart Liberal
Your comment...:" The pope, In the minds of many Americans, has yet to respond adequately on the Church's cover up and abetting of child rape"...indicates that the problem in the Catholic Church is one of poedephilia . This is an incorrect assessment of the problem. The problem in the Church, as well as in many social and/or religious organizations, is one of a "homosexual disorder".
Would that the pope call the problem for what it really and truly is: the EVIL of the gay and lesbian agenda, ie.,the "lavender mafia" that makes up a large segment of the clerical body of the Church!! It is a pathetic situation to say the least!!!!!

CVN65
You're right. I should be more tolerant of anti-gay humor. This IS a free country.

However, Mike Adams is not aiming for mere "humor" in his columns. He has an axe to grind, and the constant sound of his desperately grinding that axe & putting forth his bigoted propoganda makes me rebel. Allow me that much, please. I feel the need to rebut. And that is MY freedom of speech.

Charles
There is no difference in Charles and a Godless imbecile.

I am pretty sure there

is a higher percentage of pedophile offenders in the U.S. Congress than there is in the Roman Catholic priesthood.

scooternyc's "wonders"

"1. The power of sound and light"
And the Lord said "Let there be light" and he saw that it was good. Been there done that.

2. The beauty and power of nature
Only man can appreciate nature because he was elevated above it. Hippos in a mud hollow on a hot sunny day don't think to themselves "I can't believe its only Tuesday".

3. The awe of this universe and the possible multiverse
This is what God has made and it is indeed wonderful, and waiting for man to discover its beauty.

4. The existence of a collective consciousness
Catholics call this "the communion of saints"

5. The power of the mind
Only the human mind can wonder and ensoulment is the ability to wonder.

6. There is much to this world which is unfathomable and presently unknowable
We call that faith.

7. The Golden Rule
Jesus said it 2000 years before you, "The most powerful commandment is this, to love your neighbor as yourself"

8. Social contracts
You mean marriage, and "what God has joined, let no man run asunder."

9. Life...is a most precious gift, and to lay down one's life for another is the greatest of gifts.

I am rather disappointed in you scooternyc, you sound more Catholic than even me!

The Catholic church has done evil?
In the name of evil? What about all the wonderful things that the Catholic church has done throughout its two thousand year history?

Catholic charities feeds more hungry and shelters more homeless than all government programs put together, and more than any of the two thousand sects and offshoot religions post reformation.

During the dark ages, the Church and its monastaries were the worlds libraries, keeping and translating all the great written works of the ancient world. It taught the people to read (albeit in Latin).

Gallieo wasn't suppressed because he was telling the truth, but that he was preaching it to an audience that was uneducated and not ready to accept it. The Catholic church believes in evolution, all the hard sciences, and has no problem with the bible as allegory, not verbatim history.

A better world:
This world would be a far better place if everyone it lived their lives as if there was a God and eternal happiness or eternal punishment and dying finding out there wasn't one, than to live our lives believing there was no God or eternal reward, and dying to find out there was.

My perspective on piranhas
Bill Maher and the piranhas attacking here and on every other blog, with their endless drivel about pedophile priests is a smokescreen. They want to make it impossible for the Pope and everyone else that takes their religion seriously, to address the real problems in the US, specifically divorce and abortion. Anything a man would do to pressure or force his wife to not divorce or not have an abortion is abuse. Nobody has the right to tell a precious princess she can't have an abortion, a divorce, or anything else. Watch them run like the moral cowards they really are when you suggest if Moses was the Pope he would have stoned to death all the pedophile priests, especially the gay ones. In Supreme Court of the US Gonzales v. Carhart April 18, 2007 Justice Ginsburg, Justice Stevens, Justice Souter, & Justice Breyer join dissenting - Continue to define and defend the legitimate authority of the state respecting the right of a slave owner and the state to hire a hit man to use a noose or a gun to kill their slaves, because it is a safer procedure for the slave owner.

Will
Will exclaims "I LOVE Bill Maher!
I'll defend him to the death. Laughed my *ss off at that show."

Well, Will, we all know here on TH just how low your standards are, both morally and politically.

Billy Maher
...has short man disease. 5 foot nothing and angry as h-e-double hockey sticks.

Oh Willie
"However, Mike Adams is not aiming for mere "humor" in his columns. He has an axe to grind, and the constant sound of his desperately grinding that axe & putting forth his bigoted propoganda makes me rebel. Allow me that much, please. I feel the need to rebut. And that is MY freedom of speech. "

---------------------------

I agree with you on Adams, however, what makes you think Bill Maher has absolutely no agenda and no axe to grind?

Of course he does. He uses his medium as a way of reaching audiences country wide to promote his own type of hate speech against conservatives and their value system.

Mind you, no one has tried to boycott him, take him off the air, make him apologize for his opinions. We just prefer not to watch the putz.

Eh.
If you do not like Bill Maher, then don't watch his show.

Neal Boortz puts it well:

"You have no Constitutional right not to be offended, and I'm here to make sure this non-existent Constitutional right is honored."

This goes for people of all political views (liberals, conservatives, democrats, republicans, whatever) who seem to constantly be "offended" by things, I think.

Charles....sigh....Part 1
"How is merely pointing out that the Catho-lick church is a cult that molests children classified as "Hate Speech"?"

--You insinuated yourself in a conversation I was attempting to have with Will. We know each other very well, and if you knew our history of discussion, then you would not question my questions to Will, which do apply based on what we've shared with each other for over a year.
Since you do not, butt out.

"They are no different than the Moonies, Hari-Chrishnas, the Branch Davidians or The Rev Jim Jones."

-I beg to differ, even myself being an agnostic, can see the difference. You as a caustic antagonizing atheist would see the similarities.

"And what is up with all the gay robes, funny hats, smoke, majic crackers and crappy wine?
Sounds really Liberace to me. Oh, and not to mention all the boy f*cking."

-Wow, I'm humbled by your intellectual observations. You must really have a way with people.

lastly Charles
Tell me, Charles, one thing we can both agree on, is that we both hate child molesters. Now, work with me here...We have learned that there were abuse issues going on in the church, cover ups, victims who never were vindicated. That is a horrendous thing. But it doesn't equate to every single church, every single priest, and every single young parishoner. These are isolated incidents when you compare it to the size and population of church goers.

So, it's obvious you dislike religion, which is your right. You chose to attack it based on abuse cases. Ok...

So, do you hate children's teachers too? They molest children.

Do you hate fathers, brothers, uncles and cousins? They've molested too, even raped and killed.

Do you hate all men? Why aren't you frothing and spewing at any man for molesting? Oh, wait, not every man is a child molester....just like not every priest is either.

Or is it just easier to harass people who are religious because they wouldn't attack you back as you attack them? That says to me, you, Charles, are a coward.

Or are you a true Champion of Children and give money and your time to worthy causes to help children from being victimized? Somehow I doubt it.

I just think you're simply a petulant coward.

My perspective on Maher...
I like following Bill Maher's logic...

There are 1087 registered sex offenders in Hollywood, CA and Bill Maher is one of Hollywood's stars... which makes him a "cult leader” of Hollywood which is a “child-abusing religious cult...”

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Charles
I too have my doubts about organized religion. Not being raised on religion, I find going to church or temple alien to me even today.

I feel if one wants to be in touch with God, they only need to look no further than their own backyard. One can pray anywhere. One can feel inspiration anywhere. I do.

Some people desire the organized way of it being handled and donating their money, and I won't argue it. That is what they desire. That is what they need. I won't mock it. It's the same as me who would rather see a Grateful Dead show live than listen to a bootleg. Everyone has their preference and I refuse to mock it.

As an agnostic Jew, I too am unhappy with past atrocities that the vatican covered up or aided. But those who commited those crimes are long dead and gone.

If I chose to hate an entire group based on their history as you do, would I be vindicated hating every German now, even newborns, simply because they are native to a race of a core group of Nazi who hated people like me many years ago?

I chose not to hate races, religions or genders in total, simply because a core group bastardized or exploited someone. There are good persons and then there are jerks. I can separate the individual from the entire movement they are attached to. I chose not to hate or poke fun at people who have deep faith. It's ugly, it's immature, and it's nonsense.

You have the right to feel as you do and speak as you do. It's just not winning your argument with the others who are very religious.

Bill the Altar boy
Guess what Bill! I just guessed why you constantly insult the Catholic church. Tell the truth now, you were an altar boy and you got thrown out when you told the priest you wanted to get on your knees.
Get over it, you're in Hollywood. Nobody will say anything if you're caught on your knees.

Charles-Poster Child For G.D.S.
Angry loser with a challenged vocabulary and a strong fear of God. If he REALLY believes God doesn't exist, he wouldn't feel the need to spew his irrational rage any & every time God is mentioned. One of the worst cases of God Derangement Syndrome I've ever seen. He KNOWS God exists & is frustrated he can't prove otherwise.

Libby's know...
that if Bill Maher blasted Jews, Muslims or Hindu's like he did the Pope there would be hell to pay. Maher is an idiot, and so are the hypocrites who think it is okay to slander the Catholics.

Bill Maher
I watched 'Politically Incorrect' a couple times. I gathered the same impression of him that I did of Michael Moore somewhere along the way. They are both 'Mommie's boys.' I grew up in a large city & went though Catholic school back in the '50s. Irrespective of religious belief, both would have had a rough time in my neighborhood. Maybe they did in their's and are trying now to get even... because nobody played with them.
As for all the harping above about Freedom of Speech & 'get over it'... sorry, I'd still like to see him fired. Anything to get rid of the smirk & send him home to Momma.
BTW, his Catholic-bashing might have met with more than a meek turning of the cheek back then.

It doesn't go away...
Maher and other secularists think if they keep attacking and tearing down the Roman Catholics, that somehow Christianity will go away. Their mistake is that religion is an essential part of being human like music and language. The only reason they fight religion is secularists are human and all humans are religious...

If the secularists are successful in tearing down the Catholics, who are connected to a two thousand year tradition, who have unity with all other Catholics, who are rational and reasoned, defending their faith everywhere in the world against every other way of thinking...

It doesn't go away, it just morphs into the already 29,000 denominations of Protestants, Baptists, Evangelicals, Charismatics, and Pentecostals, who have no understanding of the two thousand year tradition, who barely have unity in their own little tribe, who are irrational and unreasoned, who couldn't defend their faith if their life depended on it, who's religion is based on a chill that ran up their spine, who think they invented Christianity...

If secularists keep attacking and tearing down the 29,000 denominations, someone gets rich writing another Harry Potter…

But it doesn't go away...

the pope
The pope is a vile hypocrite and is, directly, involved in the pedophilia cover-up.

Upland Patriot
---Libby's know...
that if Bill Maher blasted Jews, Muslims or Hindu's like he did the Pope there would be hell to pay---

Like the way the pope and some of the authors on this website slander scientists, women's rights activists, liberals, homosexuals and atheists.

Did you hear...
... about all the Catholic Riots directed at Maher's Comments?

Or about all the Catholics burning down the studios of "Politically Incorrect" and the HBO offices?

Or about the Bishop delivering a fatwa saying that "Bill Maher and anyone associated with him must appologize or be killed. Praise be to Allah"?

No?

Didn't think so.

Anyone else want to say the "Religion of Peace" is no different from Christianity?

Bill Maher...
....is so self-righteous about the Catholic Church and pedophiles......but where is he when the Boy Scouts try to prevent the same sort of stuff? Along with the rest of the liberals screaming about "homophobia" and "gay rights" and trying to disenfranchise the BSA.

not just Catholics
I have a friend whose Mormon (LDS) bishop got her pregnant. She did not make charges because the small town she came from the church leaders would have pressured her to say nothing. If she had pressed charges they would have ostracized her family. He has never been punished.
She protected her family from the church.
How many other churches have the clergy betrayed the trust of the parishioners?

We are not supposed to put people on pedestals. Are these priest any more despicable than the doctors, police, teachers who betray us? The kids don't think so.

No the church is not perfect. It is run by men, men with feet of clay.

As for the fallen away remember it is GOD we are supposed to worship, not the other people. I refuse to allow the selfish clergy, whoring nuns -- those stories are something else. Sorry "girls" but it is your conduct that keep the young ladies out of the convent.

It is the conduct of the religious that is keeping the 20 to 40 years olds out of the religious orders.
It is the lack of teaching the religion that the young adults see no reason to be a part of nothing.

Bill Maher
He is the left's cross to bear. I wish he would
dry up and blow away. Or get some religion.

The truth behind Maher's Allegations
Maher may be prone to hyperbole, but he generally gets his facts straight.

Ms. Fyfes attack on Mr. Maher overlooks the fact that his basic accusation is true. The current Pope, when he was a Cardinal, orchestrated a coverup of the widespread pedophilia among priests. Here is a link which "sources" that allegation:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2005/apr/24/children.childp rotection/print

Bill Maher/ HBO
I didn't like the slander of the Pope so I cancelled the HBO poetion of my cable service. Saved me $17/month.

Christian country
The USA was founded as a Christian country, remains a Christian country, and will ever be a Christian country.

What we, as Christians, define Christianity as differs, but we all know that our Saviour is Jesus, and the only way to heaven is through HIM.

Mr Maher is offensive to 90% of America, but HBO can collect from the other 10% and make money.

Godless
Despite popular belief, the Vatican and the Pope have very little say-so on our the orders and the Dioceses run and administer thier own affairs. This is one of the reforms (for better or for worse) of Vatican II. I suggest you educate yourself on how the Church actually runs instead of cherry picking slanted articles in the Guardian.

The Bishops themselves are to blame. There are over a thousand bishops and a billion Catholics in the world. There is absolutely no way the Vatican can centrally manage each and every Parish, or each and every priest or seminarian. Each Diocese is a self-sufficent entity run and managed by the local Bishop. Yes, the Vatican selects the Bishops, but normally they select a priest or Bishop at the reccomendation of other local clergy already in place. Rarely will the Pope select his own Bishop with no input from a Bishop already in place.

Maher's absurd, but not everyone gets it
The problem here is that there are a handful of uninformed people out there who will actually believe Maher's absurd comments.
Anyone who can think clearly will realize that, like in any other field (school system, etc.), you are going to have some wackos. It just happens. That does not mean that the entire school system or, in this case, the entire Catholic Church, promotes or supports child abuse. It does not. Granted, some of it's leaders perpetuated the problem by not stopping it immediately, but the blame should fall on them and on the individuals who were so twisted as to abuse trusting children. It should not be extended to the entirely incorrect assumption that the Catholic Church finds it acceptable.
Most of us can view Maher as a ridiculous man trying to make some money off of his so-called "humor," and ignore his childish insults. But this does have to be treated as a serious issue because some people will be ignorant enough to take his rhetoric as fact.
And, incidentally, it has already been said by some but I'll repeat it, the Pope was forced into the military.
