Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

On the eve of Halloween, stories are dotting the mainstream media landscape about the sleazy costumes for young girls this trick-or-treating season.

From a front page article in The Washington Post, to a feature on Newsweek.com, and similar stories in outlets ranging from phillyBurbs.com, WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York, and even the Globe and Mail in Canada, the plethora of skanky, smutty costumes seems to be the story du jour this Halloween.

* Page 18 of the November 5 print edition of Newsweek: “One version of a Little Bo Peep costume for preteens, on sale at Buy Costumes.com, has a corset and knee high stockings. An Army-girl costume is labeled ‘Major Flirt.’”

* Page 1 of the October 30th Washington Post: “Gabby Cirenza wanted to be a referee for Halloween. The outfit she liked had a micro-mini black skirt and a form-fitting black and white-striped spandex top held together with black laces running up the flesh-exposing sides. She looked admiringly at the thigh-high black go-go boots that could be bought as an accessory. And she thought the little bunny on the chest was cute. ‘Absolutely not,’ said her mother, Cheryl. ‘That is so not happening.’ Gabby is 11.”

The costume choices for young girls this year are making parents cringe. Several of the media reports on this story focused on the tug of war between parents and daughters. Some reported that parents caved in to the kids’ desires, others like the mom and daughter featured in the Post’s article detailed the parents’ victory for modesty.

However, all of the media outlets report the same sad bottom line. As The Washington Post stated: “Bawdy Halloween costumes … have become the season’s hottest sellers in recent years.”

The online Newsweek feature took the story into a broader cultural context. The story quoted a costume buyer from “catalog giant Lillian Vernon,” who said the sexy costumes are “simply reflections of pop culture.” The buyer, Jackie MacDonald, followed up by saying, “We don’t want to say they’re sexier, just more confident.”

Newsweek reporter Matthew Phillips dug deeper, interviewing representatives from the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls. The APA released a report in February of 2007 saying girls are depicted in a “sexualized manner” by mainstream media throughout U.S. culture.

It is no surprise, given the sexualized media messages that inundate them, that these same girls want to be “Midnight Fairy Rock Girl” or “Scar-let Pirate.” Folks handing out candy to trick-or-treaters tomorrow night can expect to see lots of young girls showing skin on their doorstep.

In the Newsweek feature, sadly entitled “Eye Candy,” the reporter does cite findings from the APA’s report that should serve as a wake-up call to parents and media producers:

“But what might be news is the increasing evidence of the negative impact an overemphasis on body image has on girls' lives. The APA task force's team of psychologists linked oversexualization with three of the most common mental health problems for women 18 and older: eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression. And there is evidence that the effect is trickling down the age brackets. ‘Clinicians are reporting that younger and younger girls are presenting with eating disorders and are on diets,’ says (APA’s Eileen) Zurbriggen.”

Maybe Halloween costume retailers who market smutty costumes to little girls, and the parents who pay for them, should read Celia Rivenbark’s 2006 book: Stop Dressing Your Six Year Old Like a Skank. On her Web site, www.celiarivenbark.com, the author discusses why she wrote the book. In a video, she holds up a t-shirt made for a seven-year-old adorned with a picture of a muffin with metal studs on it. The shirt says, “Wanted Stud Muffin.” Rivenbark quips, “They actually have a name for these clothes and the kids that wear them. They’re called ‘prosti-tots.”

most of the girls i know think the whole point of holloween is to dress as slutty as possible they think it is funny or something and get really excited about it. but that is college coeds for you

Disgusting
As the mother of a 3 1/2 and a 5 year old, I guess I should consider myself lucky that they still want to be Disney Princesses for Halloween. I've read the Newsweek article and the Washington Post article and one thing is clear: PARENTS MUST PUT THEIR FOOT DOWN! If there is a demand for this trash it's because parents are giving in. If next year my older daughter wants to dress like trash, the answer will be simple: NO! What's also frightening is that who decided to put these kind of costumes out for sale in the first place . . . pedophiles?!

Just a thought
Before buying these outfits, the parents might want to check out what sex offenders live around their neighborhood. You might be surprised.

I'm going to dress up as Britney Spears
I'll shave my head and pin fake vomit to my shirt.

I just simply can't imagine what these girls will be like in the next 10 years. Most of them will be having girls of their own.

Who needs Halloween
when you can go to your kids' sporting events and see young females dressed like streetwalkers? Worse, is knowing one of them (at a recent sport event for our daughter) to be the daughter of folks we regularly see at church! Go figure!

nick38
For any who may not know, they can go to CriminalCheck.com and by typing in a zip code can get a free list of convicted sex offenders in that area. I looked up an apartment building where I used to live and found an offender living in an apartment on the same floor with friends who had a son then 12 years old. They did not know he was there. The man had used a fake name and somebody else's Social Security card as ID when he rented an apartment in the building. The boy's father moved heaven and earth but could not get the offender moved out.

As you suggest, parents might want to find out who is lurking in the neighborhood before sending their young daughters out dressed like the town wh***.

Lilly
I've done that and there are two (too many) in our neck of the woods; we, however, never allow our daughter to trick-or-treat without one of us as chaperone. I would hate to be the parents who live in the sections of town where these perverts seem to be at their highest concentration. No doubt it's partly why so many come to our neighborhoods to do their trick-or-treating-and we're glad to see them. Thanks for the reminder! :)

If my 8 year old
Sorry, but I'm one of those parents that knows the meaning of the word NO and will say it loud and clear if my daughter ever thought that it would be a cool thing to wear something that made her look like she wanted a career as a street walker.

the slutting of young girls
what is wrong with parents when they allow their children to be put on display to every creep who lives for child porn. Parents have used the lame excuse that that is what their kids want. Dressing children as porn queens is as disgusting an act as goes on in today's society. These are afterall children and are supposed to dressed as children and play like children. Children are not minature adults. Let children be children and not some creep's fantasdy. Btw where are the feminists and their outcry about children being exploited as sex objects

Lilly's link is good and its usually
accurate and updated.

I had a group of girls (14-15 yr.olds) come in today to show me the costumes they wore at a party Saturday night. The pictures were taken at the party with their cell phones. One was a french maid in a micro mini whith thigh- high fish nets; another a playboy bunny in a deep vee/ thong back bathing suit and heels; a lady bug in a red bikini with black spots and paper wings; lastly a "pot fairy" with a green body in a leaf covered bikini. We've come a long way, baby.

let us remember that
these young girls are the grandchildren of the love generation.

How wrong we were, and now we are paying the price

'If it moves, fondle it'

'If it feels good, do it'

ad infinitum

Feeding the depraved!
The pedophiles and perverts are thanking this "self-centered" generation for raising their daughters to please every last one of them. Will the King Middle School be dispensing its BC pills into the prosti-tots' goodie bags?

wildwest
I think that I know where the feminists are on this one;

Perhaps they are of the opinion that 11 and 12 year old women should not be stifled in their quest to empower themselves, sexually.

No, these 12 year olds are shouting to the world
I am woman hear me roar.

Oh vomit...

As for Halloween...
...we have more fun making up our own costumes. This year we have Link (from 'Legend of Zelda'), Dead Cinderella (she was run over by the carriage), and a witch ( what can I say, she likes black). All of the costumes are modest, and not gory. Why don't parents get more involved, I'd like to know.

What we have in this country
are wimpy, morally confused parents that either don't care about their kids or who have lost control of them.

Thanks Lilly
Florida has FDLE's database to check, but I am happy to see there is a larger one.
When I first saw my zip results I went on red alert. Not Mr. Roger's neighborhood!

What kind of parents would allow this?

Shouldn't
the title of this article be 'Whoreoween 2007? Just wondering...

Much more then Halloween
When I was home on leave, I was walking through the mall in Savannah GA and amde the same type of comments to my wife. IT wasn't halloween just another weekend in the mall. And there were girls much younger then my 14 year old son with miniskirts and the lewd slogans on them. I told my wife how glad I was we had a son and thought their parents who walked next to them should be beaten.

When I return from the Dessert I can tell you that guys like me definately appreciate American Women and the way they look but that is WOMEN pre-teen and teen Girls.

But if I was a parent I would no more let my daughter dress seductive then I would let my son dress in clothes with a foul message, a racisit slogan, or a pro-hillary t-shirt.

Of course the level of stupidity expressed by the main stream sheeple never ceases to amaze me.

Slutty Halloween Costumes
A common sight this week downtown Iowa City are the co-eds dressed in the "French Maid" outfits looking like something that stepped out of a men's sex fantasy magazine. They look like they are trolling. Why do women think that's a proper "costume"?

Our country is full of sickos
And adults who see everything in a sexual manner. Just look at how kids in grade school ( some as young as five ) are being accused of sexual harrassment. People have went stark raving mad! These are the same folks who think they have the right to hand out birth control pills to eleven year old girls and then when they don't take then properly and wind up pregnant, take them during school hours for an abortion. ALL WITHOUT THEIR PARENTS KNOWLEGE. These people should be arrested for child abuse. Citizen x is right on about where the feminist come down on this.

Tinsldr2
"clothes with a foul message, a racist slogan, or a pro-Hillary t-shirt"...

"foul message" and "pro-Hillary" are redundant.

I saw...
...a little girl, maybe 9 or 10, walking beside (I presume) her mother in a crowded mall. The little girl was wearing a mini-skirt and a short T-shirt (lots of midriff). Upon the T-shirt was inscribed, "My mom is a MILF."

Believe me, she wasn't.

Hollywood Braindead
Britney and the cast of Hollywood Braindead seem to be attracted to two legged pets as the new fashion trend. This is all that can be deduced from the recent parade of unmarried starheads showing up decidedly pregnant. This is the type loitering around LA that calls their Agents daily just to find out what their schedules should be that day: "I'm bored - What can I do?" "Go shopping!" "Where?" " Rodeo Drive at 1:30 - carry the baby - I'll send photographers!" CLICK

Selling potato chips???
Much of the stuff looks like it was intended for the San Francisco - Castro District crowd and for selling potato chips on street corners.

I remember some pretty skanty stuff from when I was a kid -- but that was marketed for ADULTS that ought to know better, this is for the kids (or grandkids) of folks my age...

Sheesh!!!

Between the "cheer" costumes for tots and tweens, and now Halloween, so glad our DD IS in her 20s now.

SEX-ED DICHOTOMY

.....Let's see ...young girls want to wear Halloween costumes that make them look like sluts ...how in the World has this come about? ...

.....How about this ...

...1. Sex-ed classes that go from kindergarten to K-12 teaching sexuality to young children ...
...2. Schools passing out condoms and birth control pills without parental notification ...
...3. School girls getting abortions without parental knowledge ...
...4. MTV dancing that simulates sexual intercourse creeping into school proms ...
...5. Pornography on the Internet ruled as "Free Speech" ...
...6. Brittany Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton becoming role models for young girls ...

.....Need I go on? ...BTW do fathers bring their daughters to the Mall to buy these costumes? ...

.....This Free Love Sexual Revolution began in the sixties and we are reaping the whirlwind ...

.....Abortions that were supposed to be legal, safe and rare ...and limited to rape, incest or the health of the mother ...have balooned into abortion on demand and a multi-million dollar industry to the tune of 1.4 million abortions a year with enough money and political clout to influence societys mores and school curriculums ...

.....A dramatic increase in pedophilia and a child porn industry has been spawned by this sexualizing of young childern and robbing them of the innocence that used to come with childhood ...

.....As those old Virginia Slims ads used to say ..."We've come a long way baby." .....COLOSSUS

Hillary vs foul slogan
Jeeves writes:"foul message" and "pro-Hillary" are redundant.

Not exactly same thing, if he says a foul word he gets mouthwashed with soap, if he says Sen Clinton for President he gets spanked.

Tonight being Halloween I may put a Hillary for President sign on the door. I can't imagine anything scarier.

Banks
Thanks, you won another bet for me!

How long before someone blames Bush for dressing our daughters as sluts?

I'm snapping that nice new $20!

My poor Canadian guest is in shock.

The "Lingerie Barbie" dolls
I recall that circa 2002, Mattel started a controversy when they started marketing a series of Barbie doll costumes with really adult themes, with captions like "Barbie exudes a flirtatious attitude in her heavenly merry widow bustier ensemble accented with intricate lace and matching peekaboo peignoir":

http://i1.tinypic.com/6g2ctbo.jpg

Looks like Barbie is getting ready to seduce Ken in that outfit.

Mattel claimed that these Barbie dolls were intended for adult consumers only . But given that they are displayed on their own website accessible through a "Barbie" link, just like all other children's toys on their website, that kind of blurs the distinction.

The times they are a-changing
I tried to post on this topic yesterday, but the Internets ate my post. Bob_C, I saw a little girl (5-6) one day wearing a T-shirt that read, "Future MILF In Training." Too young to have bought the shirt herself, so that means someone bought it for her. The mind boggles.

I graduated high school in 1988. I mention that because in just 20 years the mores and values have changed enough to make me feel like an old relic, shaking my head at "these kids today." When I was getting ready for my junior prom, my grandmother was going to sew my dress, which was quite modest by today's standards. I wanted emerald green satin, with black lace overlay. My mother said absolutely NOT. Black was a "grown-up" color, and not suitable for a high school dance. And since Mom was buying, I had to find a second choice!

My mom and I share disbelief in the near-garments that pass for prom dresses these days. Things I'd have been ashamed to wear in front of my own mom, let alone in front of friends or peers. These things do not happen without effect, and the cheapening of our young girls is something we will all have to pay for eventually.

A good point
I almost forgot: my husband and I were recently discussing this very same subject. My husband attended private Christian schools, where uniforms were required. I went to public school in a small Southern town, where clothes were fairly conservative.

My husband made an excellent point: he said these clothes that girls are wearing today do not inspire respect. Even a teenage boy who's been raised right and taught to respect girls is still a teenage boy, with eyes and hormones. The parents of these girls really need to think about how their daughters are being perceived and what qualities are being celebrated.

Argh!
My comments keep vanishing. I was just going to say that my husband, who attended private Christian schools where uniforms were required, said that these clothes girls are wearing nowadays do not inspire respect, and I think that's the heart of the matter. Parents need to think about how their daughters are perceived, and what qualities are being celebrated when they give in to the demands of what's "in."

banks
the message from hollyweird has been sleazy for generations. The message from the movies, tv shows mtv et all have far more persuasive effects on the young who have been continually told that self indulgence and if it feels good, do it. Where have the feminists been throughout this debate. They insist on telling women they must take charge of their sexuality and dangerous activities like hooking up is to be standard behavior. That standard of morality madonna has long had as her largest followeing 14 year old girls. The typical airhead teen that is following the lifestyle of the modern day person of no morals could probably cite every aspect concerning the pathetic lifestyles of paris hilton and brittany spears but couldn't name various state capitols, couldn't identify the names of past presidents or list any significant event in our history. And still you libs blame the president. Why not look at lib hypocrisy that values nothing other than finding more victim groups to champion and teach that accountability means nothing

Halloween sluts? Thank you, Left!
Thank you, liberals, for 50 years of tearing down what you perceive to be a repressive society, so you can "do your own thing", everyone's I'm OK, you're OK, and it's so groovy.

Except now, you're parents, and little girl wants to be a whore.

Enjoy the irony.

How the Greatest Generation produced the Stupidest.....

Hillary delenda est.

Why single out the girls????
Calm down and try to lighten up nervous conservative sheeple. Why are you all so uptight about what's really a pagan festival celebrating the end of summer. And why are girls singled out for wanting to wear really outrageous costumes? Were are all the burkas and and veils all sold out? Females just can't win no matter what--you're all the same religious fanatics who think Muslims are jailing women by swaddling them in head to toe robes.

Libs. can't wait to eliminate virginity
from the lexicon.

They want 11 year olds vaccinated with Gardisol, allow 12 year olds to get abortions without parental consent in NJ, and have books read on two mommies or three daddies in kindgarten.

That 15,000 die a year of AIDS or 1 in 7 teens have genital herpes isn't enough for libs. They can't wait for more converts and more disease and death.

Nothing counts but sex and abortion and more sex. Childhood? Forget it. It's never too soon to start. It's all FOR THE CHILDREN.

renny...

My "registered child-rapist" neighbor... already has his porchlight on.

And the Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker, is still on his van.

Waiting at wal-mart
While sitting in the parking lot outside Wal-mart tonight I saw one slutty bumble bee, two sexy spider ladies and two sexy witches, in 15 minutes.

Only one of them looked to be over 16, that was the mother of the sexy witch, who was by the way the other sexy witch. Yes, matching mother and daughter slutty witches.

I just don't know what we can do.

Renny
"They want 11 year olds vaccinated with Gardisol..."

and

"They can't wait for more converts and more disease and death."

They suggest 11-12 year olds, since Gardisol, which prevents most (about 70%) types of cervical cancer (from the HPV virus) needs to be injected BEFORE sexual exposure.

Hardly a battle cry for diseases and deaths!

Mary C.

Didn't see it
Having heard all the hype, I followed behind my 11 year old daughter and her friends Halloween night and can report, I just didn't see any "skanky" costume wearing young girls. I literally observed hundreds of trick-or-treaters and not one single example of these sleazy costumes about which the talk show hosts are hyper-ventilating. Maybe Atlanta suburbs are just more conservative but I really think that the pack journalists of the main stream media successfully put out a big cultural "boo" and a lot of gullible conservative columnists and talk show hosts went screaming from the room.

I just didn't see
DMZDave comments - "I just didn't see any "skanky" costume wearing young girls."

Dave,

I hope you don't take offense at this, but...Duh!

Sk_nk-wear is party-wear. Of course they don't wear it out to go door-to-door, they wear it to parties were they will have close and prolonged exposure to hormone-fueled boys.

Come on man! Where's your common sense?

What happened to making costumes?
I don't see any reason to take kids shopping for skanky Halloween costumes. Wouldn't it be easier to do like my mother used to do & make them from outgrown outfits, old sheets or whatever than to take them shopping for flimsy costumes than make them look like Jerry Springer rejects? Save your money by making something unique for Halloween. If they don't see costumes you aren't buying for them, they'll be satisfied with whatever you put on them.

WoW
So, in response to a lot of the liberal bashing I felt I needed to say something. For the record I'm a registered Democrat. I'm a pretty left wing bi-sexual whom prefers to date women, and has a drag-queen who is a professional dominatrix for a room-mate. I've also been dating the same guy for almost a year and I'm helping him raise his 19month old son whom he took responsibility for when he and his ex split. I'm also only 18 years old fresh out of high school and taking college classes. That doesn't mean I have no morals or sense of right and wrong. It simply means I chose to live differently than the norm. Now, knowing this of me... you can listen to what I have to say.

I was not allowed to wear any form of a high-heel until I was 10. And even then I wasn't allowed to wear anything above an inch (so really it was just a half an inch higher than normal). I also wasn't allowed to wear makeup unless it was a very special occasion, and even then it was minimal. AND I'M GLAD. It was my childhood; sure I wanted to grow up fast... "I wanna wear big-girl shoes and big-girl clothes and makeup like my big sister" but I wasn't a big girl, and due to certain events in my life I had already grown up too fast. But my parents forced me to realize how much more fun it is to be a kid while I was a kid. And I know down right that these costumes shouldn't even be on the market. Someone wants a slutty costume for their kid they should have to make it at home... not the other way around. The smuttiest costume I ever had was Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin. (I had a leotard underneath)

WoW part 2
The worst part about this whole thing though. Is this... It's the parents' fault. If they weren't buying it then there wouldn't be a market for it. Obviously the companies made money off of it. They've been trickling these slutty costumes in for years. (and I’ve thought they were atrocious for years) but this is the first year they've been SHABAM LOOK AT THE SLUTTY LITTLE GIRLS because they knew they could get money off of it because they were hits. If parents didn't buy the costumes then the market wouldn't market them. It's simple supply and demand.

If you’re a parent take the authority and say no to your kids... next year when it happens even worse take charge be a "b*tch" to your trick-or-treaters. if you get a trick-or-hooker don't give them candy. Find a way to make the costumes less appealing. Don't just say... DO... sure for Halloween this year I was a pirate lass, and yea I wore an unauthentic skirt. and I had a corset on and I was carrying a baby, but unlike the little dinky costumes in the malls I dressed it up I had a long-sleeved shirt with ruffled cuffs, poofy arms, and the breast ruffles (which incidentally made sure my breasts were covered), and it was a long skirt that had layers to it and was floofy (it's so a word) and I had coin pouches pinned to it and I had it kind of gathered in the front for easier walking. And then the baby was a pirate too. And yes I could have been classified as "sexy", but not slutty. It was the modest side of sexy. (Yes it still exists people just don't use it as often. much like they don't use their brains as often)

One last thing... I believe that Halloween costumes should be designed around your coat (of course I live in Colorado but still) if you can't incorporate a jacket into your costume because it covers too much than you are SOL.

(and now I'm going to go write my persuasive essay for class about this)
