Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It was a bright summer day in Chicago when a woman confirmed that she was pregnant with her first child. The telling of the families ensued, followed by the announcement to friends. The days began to speed up, her body began to change, and eventually the pressing question was finally asked. To know or not to know the gender of the baby, what would they choose?

Eventually they decided to go for the ultrasound and prepare themselves for her arrival.

Only what they discovered was not what they had expected.

With the conclusion of the ultrasound pending, the technician left the room with a worried look on her face. A few minutes later, a senior doctor entered and relayed the sad news.

The ultrasound showed an echo-genic condition. This particular cause for concern was due to the lungs of the unborn child showing up brighter on the ultrasound reading than the medical doctors felt they "should be" at that point in the pregnancy. Bright lungs on the ultrasound, they were informed, indicated a high probability of Down's syndrome. Understanding the repulsion that disabled children were in a state that Barack Obama served in, the conclusion was clear: this child must be aborted. So with all the grace of a semi-truck hitting a brick wall at top speed, the doctor flatly informed the baby's mother that in the state of Illinois, there were only a limited number of days to have an "induced labor procedure" (abortion). They strongly suggested that the mother and father consider and pursue this "solution" to the "Down's question."

The parents chose instead to pursue additional and frequent ultrasounds roughly every two weeks for a period of time to see if there were any further developments.

You see, in Barack Obama's twisted world, not to mention that of the medical and abortion industries in his home state, the push was on--test for Down's, and do an "induced labor procedure" (abortion). Additionally, in this messed up universe, Obama specifically and single handedly saw to it that if the child had struggled with the chemical process of the "induced labor procedure" (abortion) and survived, she would not have been allowed any medical care to save her life.

But that is the way of the world for Barack Obama, the medical practitioners that terminate pregnancies, and the hospital named "Christ" that performs these procedures. Oh and did I mention that it is Obama's own religious denomination that operates said hospital?

But I can't help but ask the question: "Why does Obama pursue such outcomes?"

Perhaps it's because neither of his children have had anything but a beautiful life, and a pleasurable home to experience. But do handicapped children deserve less from life because of some mental or physical limitation? The Paralympics are just around the corner. Does Obama believe we would have been a more just society if those athletes had each been aborted, or left to die in a soiled utility closet even if born?

Last week, Barack Obama called those of us who have told the truth about his position on this issue "liars." He said that we were misrepresenting this issue and he attempted to claim confusion and "multiple bills" and "procedures" to cloud the issue of his voting record.

All of which itself was a lie.

The record is clear: Barack Obama voted then, and remains now the only elected U.S. Senator to have voted in favor of denying life saving medical care to children who had been born.

PERIOD!

Last week, David Brody of CBN carried Obama's water for him when he said that saying such things amounted to over the top rhetoric. But what is over the top about being as specific as possible in telling the truth? Barack Obama voted in favor of infanticide. End of story. But why does it matter?

In a society that has continued to diminish the value of human life, perhaps Obama believes it won't matter. But for me it is very personal.

Because that little girl, who could have been denied life saving medical care, is named Eliza.

I've held her. I've hugged her. And I've kissed her forehead when she called me "Uncle Kevin."

She is three and half years old, and she is one of the healthiest, happiest, non-disabled children I've ever seen.

See, it turned out that the ultrasound machine and the readings it produced (which in turn had been the primary overriding reason why the abortion suggestion had been made so forcefully) was miscalibrated. Eliza's lungs were perfect, and her parents had a relatively normal delivery. And they have given her a wonderful childhood.

Barack Obama's indiscriminate political pandering may be a good enough reason to pick a running mate in Joe Biden, who openly thinks Obama's not ready to be president. But pandering is not a good enough reason for him to have been willing to let Eliza die. Not nearly good enough realizing now that there never was anything wrong with her. Not good enough at all!

But actually "not good enough" sums up Obama... pretty much... all the way around.

You just don't realize
"Uncle Kevin" that your sister or sister-in-law has been "punished with the baby". Bringing another human being into the world will play havoc with Barry the Boob's plan to reduce carbon emissions. How can you and yours be so unenlightened?

Obama's own words
"But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."

Keep Punishing Me
God punished me and my wife with two beautiful children, and they have punished us even further with 4 lovely grand kids, about to be 5. Keep it up Lord. I can take it.

Thank you for your beautiful article ...
There was a TV commercial the other day that featured the Special Olympics race. There were, I think, 8 children at the starting line. One little boy darted out, ahead of the group, smiling from ear to ear, then, he tripped and fell. Two other kids raced by him, but a little girl looked back, saw him down, went to him to comfort him. In no time, all the children were there and they all helped him get up and they all "raced" to the finish line.
The crowd roared their approval.

I have heard it said many times that children who have Down's Syndrome seem not to have been born with the "hate" gene in their minds. Yes, they may have medical problems, but loving is not a problem.

And, so, I have to wonder: if there is no gene for hating others, perhaps the rest of us "normal" people are not really that special after all.

OBAMA MAMA IS WILLING
TO DESTROY AN ENTIRE NATION !
WHAT IS ANOTHER PERSON ?!
ELVIS

Animal Kingdom
Obama is an animal in a merciless kingdom.

Alaska Gov Sarah Palin knows when a baby
Maybe we should let Obama get elected so that we can replace him in 2012 with a Bobby Jindal/Sarah Palin ticket. If they can clean up Alaska and Louisiana corruption, maybe they can change Washington D.C.

Labor Day With Family & Friends
This Labor Day would be a great time to talk to family and friends about socialism and the detriment to our standard of living. Talk about Obama's unmerciful position on children who survive abortions. Tell them about Obama's plans of taxing everyone into an equality of misery out of "fairness." Seek out the young adults in your families; find out if they are Obamabots and need to be rescued from the cult. Obama's campaign is preying on the young and uninformed; we need to get the word out so that everyone knows the truth by November. Labor Day Weekend would be well-spent laboring for our continued freedom.

Yeah...
... killing is such a great option to have at hand. Especially when you ain't got 'a lot of resources.'

Save America, eat a Liberal
I agree, He will be THe worst to happen to this country since Jimmy Carer. He, his beliefs, are staringly misguided and so wrong. Who casre how many houses someone owns, isn't this America and isn't with hard work and some descent descions, anyone can become wealthy, and should we be allowed to keep the majority of what we earn, instead of having some socialist government telling us that we are just to stupid to take care of ourselves and they'll handle it for us, PEOPLE wake-up, this ins't England and he is NOT Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men, He is a theif in the night comming to truly change the core of this Country, I cannot imagine anyone with any half witted sense, would think that to talk most of what you work for and re-distribute it to people that don't deserve, they haven't worked for it, and fact all those fat cats in the government that make their living for 20-30 yrs in Congress, should not be allowed to do that the majority of the stikin' libs have never had to do a hard days work or become self made men by having the ingenuity and guts it takes to start your own company, they want to punish people that do that, Wake up, whats gonna happen when there is no more tax base to tax?? You freekin idiots, they try and run every corp and business small and large out of here. Liberlism is the most dangerous thing that could happen to any one Country's government. it's right up there with socialism and Communisum, shame on us if OB gets elected. Pray and Pray and Pray again that God's will is to not allow these two crazies to get elected. GO McCain.

Obama is worried about the babies death

Obama is worried about the 'Death Certificate' - Obama could care less about a baby dying a cruel painful death.

If a 'Death Certificate' is issued showing the baby did NOT die during a medical procedure but hours later - all involved would have to answer to someone.

Why is a baby left alone so NO ONE knows when the baby died?

The failure of a physician to immediately submit the required form to the government (to trigger issuance of the death certificate) is often both a crime and cause for loss of one's license to practice.

Doctors just state it died during the Abortion.

Obama is a lawyer and time of Death is what worries him, not the pain and suffering of the baby!

Soldierswife
Thank you for what obviously was a heartfelt honest post. This country needs all the folks like you and your husband we can find. My thanks to you both for your service.

Barry Dunham lies about everything!
He suffers from Empathy Deficit Disorder.
That is not his only problem but....,you have to be one cold S.O.B. to listen to a nurse tell you how she cuddled a baby for 45 minutes until it died, and still cast your vote for no medical assistance to the little beings who managed to survive abortion.

Obama lied – babies died
Obama lied – babies died
B.H.O. is no reformer – he’s a gangster-style, old school Chicago hack. B.H.O. is not “The One” – he is by calculative composition a champion of his master’s agenda (Unions, Planned Parenthood, and Mr. Soros et al). B.H.O. will change our capitalist country into one, big union shop run by the Democrats; bent towards the left so far that his socialist European friends will recognize him for the Communist at heart he really is.
I do not fear him; I loathe him for the holocaust of the Unborn (and in some cases the Born) he so adamantly supports. I do not think is name is funny; I think his name speaks defiantly of his family’s murderous, African-Muslim roots.
The more his candidacy is vetted, the more we learn about the puppet-masters behind the scrim of the burka. The G.O.P. will have enormous crossover votes because we love to win, believe our country is the best the world has ever seen, and mightily disapprove of American apologists. We will elect McCain because he actually will put the country first – and has the alarming record of cavorting with Democrats to prove it. John may not have led the perfect, conservative life but no one has, eh? McCain’s life is an open book and Obama’s is shrouded in mystery, deceit, and dope.
See you at the polls!

Soldierswife
You gave my thoughts so eloquently. I pray every day for God to make His will known to us and I truly believe that our country will not survive a BO presidency.

Thank you for your husbands and your sacrifices for our country. The service people are my family's heroes.

I support abortion. But,I don't decide for women if and when they should have an abortion. This is the same position of Mr.Obama.It is the law of the land and it will not be changed. There are 145,000,000 orphans in the world, choose 1.Also,generation Y is not the "Savior" the Pro-Life group is living for.I know, because I helped form their thinking!!!

Killer, Ga
You have chosen an appropriate nickname for yourself.

Obama's Choice--America's Judgment
THE BLOODY CITY
(Abortion in America)

Children yawn and stretch, and are torn to pieces in an instant.
Cries for mercy fall on deaf ears, they are loathed, they are loathed.
Angels stand with swords drawn as the bloody city sleeps.

Awaken! City of power, city of light.
While you have slept foulness has covered your streets.
The stench of the blood and entrails of murdered innocents.
Strange voices from the air screaming for choice,
Perverted liberty--Louder! louder! to drown out the cries for mercy.

But the songs of the children go up before the Father for a testimony,
While angels stand with swords drawn as the bloody city sleeps.

MS

Good point, killer
"Also, generation Y is not the "Savior" the Pro-Life group is living for.I know, because I helped form their thinking!!!"

In 1935, in Germany, you'd have been an enthusiastic Hitler-Jugend squad leader, too.

IT SHOULD TAKE A COURT ORDER

.....FOR THE STATE TO END A HUMAN LIFE ...

.....Convicted killers have this right but not the yet to be born ...

.....If Duncan Hunter's "Life at Conception Act" (H.R. 618) ever reaches the President's desk and is signed into law, it will overturn Roe and provide 14TH Amendment rights to a baby at conception ...

.....A court order based on a pediatricians testimony and signed by a Judge would then be required to get an abortion ...finally the promise, to make abortions safe, legal and rare would be kept .....COLOSSUS

Mark-Idaho writes: "Maybe we should let

Obama get elected so......"

Might look good on paper, but if Marxist Obama is elected, in four years we'll be so far down road to Socialism/Marxism/Communism that we won't recover...

Marxist "Barack Obama voted then, and remains now the only elected U.S. Senator to have voted in favor of denying life saving medical care to children who had been born."

And this dovetails beautifully into Marxist Obama's plan for SOCIALIZED HEALTH CARE for us!

If, God forbid, the government is both our health care provider and payer, the government gets to make the call about everything concerning our health care... who gets it, or not, and for what.

The government can (and sooner or later WILL!) say:

You're pregnant, it's the law, you WILL have an ultrasound!!!

You're fetus (opposed to your baby) has a birth defect, no prenatel health care for you.

Your (born) baby has a birth defect, no heath care for your baby.

Far fetched? Nope! It's happening in England and Canada NOW!

Resonate
I chose "Vampire's Reflection" for a reason. That reason would be that right-wing rhetoric resonates as much as there is a vampire's reflection: not at all.

Why?

Let's just say for the sake of argument that what Kevin argues is "the truth" and cannot be contested.

Why doesn't his argument resonate with the public?

I ask this question because Republican's need to do some self-assessment if they are going to be effective moving forward.

I believe that starts with understanding why arguments that get trumpeted loud and clear like this one by the right wing media do not resonate?

Obama's pastor said "God D**n America"? That story was heralded on every right wing media there is, but to what effect?

The typical response as to the ineffectiveness of right-wing media is to blame the left-wing media and then again to blame Americans as too stupid to parse left-wing media for what it is.

Both are cop outs and blaming Americans as being easily fooled is unpatriotic.

I say the right answer is to take responsibility and admit failure and then to regroup and to try and understand why right wing messages are as visible as a vampire's reflection.

vampire: You probably don't realize it..

but that entire post was just so much rhetoric!

I say that you need to go back to from whence you came and rethink your position.

We've
got ya beat Ken..we were punished with 5 and then punished ourselves by adopting a sixth and
He further punished us with 15 great, magnificent, beautiful, gorgeous, exceptional
etc, etc. etc, grandkids, 23 yrs down to 6 mos old. What a punishment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.
God chose the adopted one for us so in reality,
He punished us a sixth time. It's been a raucous, delightful life, not perfect by any means but even when they strayed they came back, as scripture promised..Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.
People would look at us as if we both had two heads whenever we went anywhere with the gang,
I also babysat a boy that was like part of the family. Our adopted is bi racial, is black, puerto rican and caucasian..no arab blood..so
when people would ask when we had the 7 with us, if they were all ours and we'd say, "yep, all but one." And walk away.

Vampire Joins Kimberly
Welcome to Vampire, who spends his (her?) time writing non-sense. You should get on a liberal blog and spread your hate. None of your "reasoning" makes sense, it only convinces normal readers of your stupidity. Thanks for nothing.

WOMEN rule!!
I'm a woman..., but it never ceases to amaze me how educated, 21st Century Americans could "choose" to be shackled to some voodoo-mentality that a WOMAN has the right-of-execution - until she is forced to admit 'her belly-growth' is alive [right up to the date of birth, even]. HER logic: out-of-sight means no-jurisdiction for human status, so SHE gets to "choose" if it lives or dies!! Medical stats like heart rate, brainwaves, and other bodily functions notwithstanding, millions of deny-responsibility folks "choose" to cling to these immature superstitions, hedonistic beliefs, control-fantasies, etc., instead of "choosing" the obvious truths.

What a pity Roe v. Wade stops at birth for these zombies... WOMEN could then, without impunity, throw their kids off docks, lock them in cars to roll into lakes, beat and molest them into coma, death... And why stop there?! WOMEN should be allowed to execute their husbands and parents at will too, if they so "choose." Don't you believe this? Hey! Out-of-sight rule works on everyone!

Hitler would have killed (yeah, pun intended) to come back to be the leader of such a fine bunch of "Pro-Choice" kill-mongers!!

When you believe as Obama
does that a baby is "punishment" then murdering babies comes very easy to you. If this man becomes our new leader we are so screwed.

Biden should be strike two
I am not absolutely certain, but wasn't it Sen. Biden who said, when asked when a fetus becomes a human being, "When the mother say it does"?
That is certainly what most Dems believe. I used to think that people who would kill an abortion provider were wrong and evil. I grow more unsure of that decision by the day.

Stupid Article, Stupid Religious Nuts
What on earth does Obama have to do with the child featured in this article?

In the story, Obama had no interaction with the woman who was pregnant or her family.

Obama had no interaction with the doctors.

The "they" in the article accused of recommending an abortion are not named. It apparently is a single doctor who McCollough has conflated into the anonymous infamous but unnamed "they" who McCollough wants stupid people to assume includes Obama.

The choice, if actually offered to the woman, to abort was HER choice. There is no law in Illinois or the US that requires her to have an abortion. Yet the EVIL KEVIN MCCOLLOUGH has the nerve to claim "the conclusion was clear: this child must be aborted."

Maybe some unknown doctors conclusion, but not Obama's. He was no part of this decision. Certainly not the woman's conclusion or her family's.

Yet because religious conservatives are SO STUPID that they don't actually use their (supposedly) god-given brains, the PANDERING SLANDERING IDIOTS lap this cr@p up like it was manna from heaven.

If you ever wonder why social conservatives and liberals like me think you religious right wing nuts are SO UNBEARABLY STUPID just re-read this article. If you don't understand why, go back to grade school and get a teacher to help you with some basic logic skills.

Denny
You are correct. Down's kids and adults are so full of love.

When I was a kid we had a 'special' school at the far end of the playground. It gave me a lot of joy to be able to play with those kids at lunch time. Those kids and some adult kids were always happy. I felt more loved and accepted by them than by noral kids.

When I first met my wife, she was teaching 'special' kids. Many of these kids are very smart and some even go to college.

These kids and adults are neither Repubs or liberals. They just mostly live thier lives in happiness. We can learn alot from them.

if "sprigs" biden knows
when life begins his paygrade must be a lot higher than obrahma's. why isn't biden on the top of the ticket?

Boone
Biden's view is the reason why the abortion decision is by law the woman's only.

Sad, isn't it, that irresponsible women get to decide what is life, based wholly upon their own convenience, rather than the fact that the continuance of the life within her gets to go forward just because he exists and should have the right to his own self?

I am Woman, I can do anything better than you. But listen to me whine when I get pregnant!

My apologies for commenting on a personal exchange, but it is in a public space:

Just to say you might want to try 'doth equal' next time instead of 'do equalith.' Also, no witches were burned at Salem. Nineteen were hung, but none were burned. And there is no evidence that anyone 'cheered.'

Killing the unborn
Those who support abortion on demand insist that a baby is not human until after it has left the womb, completely. That last qualification is to allow "doctors" to pull out the feet first, and then destroy the child's brain while the child's head is still in the birth canal. They say it isn't a "person," it is just a "fetus" (Latin for "unborn child"), and so no killing is involved, just a "procedure." Wonderful weasel-wording is it not?
Think back if you will, to the mid to late 1930s and an equally humane and compassionate bunch of people(?) who objected to the very existence of a particular sector of the human race. "The Jews aren't people," they said. "They are untermenschen, sub-human creatures, so eliminating them isn't killing people, because they aren't people.
Oh, I know, this will immediately draw the hysteria of the pro-death crowd.

pb (in WA)
Typical liberal approach ala Alan Colmes:
If you can't respond effectively to an argument, change the subject!

Some thoughts for slacker
You are correct, at no point in the article did Obama have a direct say about what happened with Kevin's niece. There are, however, a few other factors at work here.

The doctor (certified professional) is telling the mother that it is better for her (or her child, the emphasis is not clear) that she not be born. The doctor does not consider that there might have been a misdiagnoses, but immediately proceeds to inform the would-be mother that this is best.

Having met several people who were assured the same thing, this isn't uncommon. What the pro-life community (both conservatives and liberals) is that life is preferable to death when there is an uncertainty.

Obama is criticized here because his record indicates that he thinks people who find themselves unwilling parents should be allowed to divorce themselves from responsibility by killing an innocent.

Be very careful when you allow a group of people to determine when a person is valuable. You will, almost assuredly, one day find that you, too, are disposable.

Thanks for the article, Kevin.

Obama Would Let her Die.
Barry says he is not a Muslim. However,he knows the Muslims beliefs. Many in his family are Muslims. Militant Muslims? Who knows?

Some Muslims will go so far as to strap bombs on their own children and let them die for a cause. Why is it surprising that Barry-O would not protect the life of an American child?

bravo!
thank you for a great column - well said and obviously from the heart of personal experience. an obama-lead nation is a frightening prospect at best...i shudder think of the worst. as was said in church just this morning, those who believe in the sanctity of life (among other things) have to continue to try to be a light in a dark world. thanks again.

This girl survived.
Muslim Hussein Obama has a whole lifetime of abuse for girls, starting with mutilation, continuing with beatings, isolation, and having to wear black over-all wool rags in the hottest weather.

Fla Storm #32
Muslim women should rule for a while. Let them beat the men for the fun of it, and cut off their pleasure organs. Let them make the men wear black rags all the time, and beat them for speaking or going outside wighour permission. Let them see how much fun it is. The only thing is, that, they can't impregnate the men, and beat them for having a child of the wrong gender.

kerath25
You are correct.

As a person under BO'S leadership who is about to retire in 21 months, will I be no longer considered valuable, because I will be a drain on society and be killed. Will welfare people be considered not valuable and be destroyed?

Liberal? #39 was addressed to another poster as a courtesy. It still exists. Maybe you're watching too much TV.

Vampire's reflection...AGAIN it's Ca.

Here's the deal. Did it escape your bloodless attention that this article was about late term abortion?

Please ....,go read an Anne Rice book and continue to chill.

Slacker
I am not a religious conservative but I am a human being. I know when something is wrong. It is wrong to let a baby who has survived abortion the further indignity of letting die unattended in a supply closet.

You are as empathy challenged as Barry.

FlaStorm
Amen Sister!

Slacker ...
Let me be the first, I presume, to let you know that you are a nincompoop!

Had you any brains you would know that your definition of logic fails the first test ... sensible.

Just because you want something to be so does not result in it being so. Obama is a person who wishes to see a change in the law related to abortion. He wants to see it become law that when the child is born, if the person giving birth (I refuse to say Mother) had decided to abort for any reason, but the child lived through the act, the the child should be allowed to expire, die, cease to live by being laid out in a non-protective manner until it became dead. Why, because the person giving birth wanted not to be a Mother.

Abortion Apologists
Being against all abortion,I would not want any babies to be allowed to die. Even if some grow up to be as cold ,unfeeling and souless as some of these apologists.

a different pro-life strategy?
i am against all abortions. but i don't understand why the pro-life movement makes its case around these late term abortions of oftentimes chronically ill babies. i'm glad that mccullough's niece was born healthy. that is a blessing. but i don't think the government should be in the business of forcing women to bring sick children that may not survive very long outside the womb to term. i think that decision needs to be made by the mother and her physician.
i think the case against abortion should be made around the far more frequent and far more frivolous early term abortions which are often just a complascent form of after the fact birth control.

Anne of 10:07
Anne, this country did not always exist. It was conceived in the minds of brilliant altruistic men, and born in the blood of heroes who caught the vision, fought and sometimes died for it. On paper, these guys and gals didn't have a chance, although they did have a prayer. Cheer up. The vision is clearer than ever and in a larger and more powerful majority than prevailed in 1776. Only one in 200 men in Afghanistan was Taliban but they took over based on a unified vision and willingness to bleed for it. Totalitarianism can not take over here. We have lots better odds than the Minutemen and its not the goblins who have the guts, its the good guys. Can you imagine Obama or Biden taking up arms to defend the virtue of their political beliefs?

Medicine is an ART
People seem to think that doctors know it "all." Not true! Our boys were diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when they were 5 and 2. We were pregnant with a third child.

Our medical team made an amniocentesis sound MANDATORY. I suppose the thinking was that if the third baby was positive for CF, then we would have the option to abort her.

We refused multiple, incredulous offers of amniocentesis. We knew that, no matter what, we would not abort our baby. Thank God we refused! In the six month, the amniotic fluid was over produced and I spent three months with an oversized placenta! An early amnio would have compromised the health of the placenta.

The third child, a girl, doesn't even carry CF. Definitely a small amount of divine intervention.

Don't believe what doctors tell you! Learn for yourself, get a second (or tenth) opinion, follow your instincts!!

Kevin, thank God your family didn't capitulate to medical pressure to abort!!

As Ann Coulter says, "why not err on the side of Life?"

LC You are as stupid as...
... a religious conservative.

You say,
"It is wrong to let a baby who has survived abortion the further indignity of letting die unattended in a supply closet.

I did not advocate that. Obama did not advocate that. No one in this article by the pandering, rabble rousing McCollough spewing his stupidities to idiots like you who seem to be totally illiterate is suggesting such a thing.

People like you make a sack of hammers look smart.

kerath25 You sound reasonable but...
... You are incorrect.

You say, Obama's
"... record indicates that he thinks people who find themselves unwilling parents should be allowed to divorce themselves from responsibility by killing an innocent."

I don't agree that his record says that.

I will agree that Obama is pro-choice. So is Clinton and the majority of democrats.

But that does not mean that they think of abortion as a form of birth control that should be permitted. They just beleive, as a majority of Americans do, that there are certain cases where abortion should be allowed.

Examples where I would permit a woman and her familiy to make such a decision are:

1) In cases where the woman was raped and did not want to carry her rapist's child to term even to give it up for adoption, much less support and raise that child. I understand you would like to force her to do that and I am not going to convince you that you are wrong. However, it is a difficult choice and I say it is up to her to decide early in the first trimester.

2) If it is KNOWN that the child will be born with a catastrophic illness that has no known cure and the parents do not have the resources to care for that child. I am NOT tallking about a doctor's OPINION or GUESS (as apparently in this anecdote from McCollough). There ARE indeed cases where this can be known from tests. Again, I know you disagree. But I say this decision is a private decision that the parents have to make. We need to leave it to them.

Again, neither Obama or any one else in this election is advocating abortion as a method of birth control, ESPECIALLY for economic reasons.

Obama has been outspoken - more so than McCain - on parental responsibility.

That's "It" die, loon
Regardless of what your feelings for that Down kid are now, it is not a person before it is born.

I see nothing wrong with aborting a fetus with Down's. You would stick people with a generational burden they are not prepared for just because you can imagine a growing clump of cells to be a human being? Because you are just so certain that a supernatural entity told you it is a human being? Ridiculous.

Wendy - you probably don't believe
That the Jews were fully human, nor the disabled as well...

NEWSFLASH to Wendy - to genuinely love ANYONE - there will always come a moment or two of "burden" - that's where real love is actually defined.

I do not understand how you can be "against all abortions", and then suggest that it might be OK to kill an unborn child because it is sick. Do you think (as Princeton bio-ethicist Peter Singer suggests) that mothers should have then option of euthanizing defective newborns?

What is the difference?

Robert
You are the only legitimate rationale for abortion.

Born Alive Infant Protection Act
To the poster who wrote that no such law ever existed, the law Obama helped to defeat was called the "Born Alive Infant Protection Act." It isn't difficult to find information about it on the internet, or in the legislative records of the state of Illinois. Obama fans are entitled to believe abortion is fine and dandy, but they should at least not lie about the issues in their efforts to get their anointed one elected. But because his poll numbers are dropping, the Obamites are no doubt getting restless.

Obama has never voted for any restrictions on abortions. He promises to suport and sign a federal law that will override ALL state abortion limits. (Apparently he believes the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution does not apply to him.)

If there is nothing immoral about abortion, why do liberals say the practice shuld be "legal, safe, and rare." Why must it be rare if there's nothing immoral about sticking an instrument into the skull of a baby and sucking its brains out?

What, if anything, have the liberals done to make abortions rare? Nothing that I know of.

What can't the media ask Obama questions that are any tougher than "What's your favorite flavor ice cream?" Why did it take a minister at a church to ask what the media should be asking?

Send the link to every liberal you know... it's certain to annoy them.

Slacker, you seem reasonable
... and I can see the rationale for your arguments. I've held the same beliefs myself in the past. I still have to struggle with them sometimes when a family member has to make such a choice.

As you put it (to your credit), we are not going to agree on the specifics outlined in your two points. These differences are due to personal beliefs and arguing them won't get us anywhere.

I'll also concede that Obama has spoken eloquently about parental responsibility. It is one of the great credits to his character.

Your blog post on the subject was well-written, even if I disagree with some of the finer points. However, Obama does not share your beliefs about limiting abortion. He has stated repeatedly that one of his top priorities would be to pass the Freedom of Choice Act, nullifying all laws (including the restrictions you mentioned). The full text can be found here:
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c108:S.2020:

With all abortion laws erased, take a look over the statistics mentioned in the articles you have cited. Is unrestricted abortion, covered by medical aid, the correct message to be sending the 90% seeking abortions for personal reasons?

I know I fall into at least one of those categories, as does my wife. We still discuss whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape, incest and especially mother's health (as our own children might fit this category someday), but we never, ever argue about the cases where the mother would be inconvenienced.

The truth is you can find a lot of lies on the internet. Everything you read is not always true. You have to use your brain to separate the truth from the lies.

THE TRUTH:

Obama never pushed legislation mandating ifanticide. The controversy to which you are alluding is his opposition to a "born alive" bill which tried to mimic an existing Federal law.

Obama opposed the Illinois bill. He was NOT trying to pass a bill. He opposed a bill that he believed was flawed. You may not believe the bill was flawed but he did.

Here is why he opposed the Illinois bill from a quote from a christian reporting source:

"I have said repeatedly that I would have been completely in, fully in support of the federal bill that everybody supported - which was to say --that you should provide assistance to any infant that was born - even if it was as a consequence of an induced abortion. That was not the bill that was presented at the state level. What that bill also was doing was trying to undermine Roe vs. Wade.

By the way, we also had a bill, A LAW ALREADY IN PLACE IN ILLINOIS THAT INSURED LIFE SAVING TREATMENT WAS GIVEN TO INFANTS."

The sentence in caps is important. This is a FACT. The Illinois Department of Public Health has said that not giving care to infants born alive is illegal. In fact the IDPH did investigate claims that this practice had ocurred in a hospital and found no evidence of it. Ask yourself why they would bother to investigate something that is not a crime.

No one is arguing that Obama is a right to life candidate. But stop getting your knickers in a knot over lies from Corsi, McCollough and other disreputable liars.

Here is a link to the truth, debunking the lies that the right wing is frantically fashioning to keep you from understanding the truth:

You are correct, Obama supports the FOCA. I will admit that I have not studied it in detail, but I believe it tries to do 2 main things:

1) Codify Roe v. Wade so that prior to viability abortion is a woman's choice. I assume but have not verified that by that they mean in the first trimester.

2) Allow abortions after viability only in cases of the health of the mother.

The second part is, of course, a can of worms, since I can imagine all kinds of legal shenanigans on both sides over the definition of "health". There is a bunch of other cr@p in the legislation that troubles me, even as liberal as I am.

So where I personally come out on this is that I do not think I agree with Obama that the FOCA is a great piece of legislation that I should want to see passed without some significant changes.

I am not so worried over this as you. For one thing, this issue is so hot and controversial that this act will never get through even a democratic congress without enormous debate and compromise. And probably not at all.

Second, Obama would have to be an idiot to waste much of his first term on such an effort. And dislike him as much as I know you do, one thing Obama is NOT is an idiot. There are WAY too many problems he will have to deal with immediately to put this bill anywhere near the front burner.

Finally being the good relativistic liberal that I am, I am not a one issue voter. I hate the idea of abortions, much as I abhor wars. However the world often looks gray to me. Sometimes wars are absolutely necessary in spite of the innocents that will die. Sometimes, in the minds of some women abortions are necessary. Who am I to demand that some woman sacrifice her life to avoid one. I will applaud & hono the ones who do. But I won't condemn those who don't and live for children they & husbands they already have.

cleverness of you
i do not think it is "OK to kill an unborn child because it is sick." but i am more sympathetic to the plight of mothers faced with the tragic prospect of caring for seriously ill children then i am to the problems of pregnant narcissists engaging in promiscuous sex. to me, it seems the government should ban abortion on demand, but the government should not be in the business of telling women whose children face serious health problems, and i'm talking worse than just down syndrome, i don't think the government should be telling these women that they must give birth. the worse the conditions of the baby, the more difficult the decision.
i know this opinion is sort of at odds with just about everybody. there seems to be more tolerance for early term abortions of perfectly healthy babies. i guess they don't look so much like people in the first couple of months. but this is how i see it.
do you have more sympathy for the women who commit early term abortions? or do you see them all as murderers equally deserving of condemnation?

manfredo - Relativism at work
There are no absoutes in this debate

I agree with your post,
"the government should not be in the business of telling women whose children face serious health problems ... they must give birth."

There will of course have to be some definition of "health" problems so the discussion will never end. What is "serious", "incurable", expensive today, may no big deal tomorrow.

And, the government if it wants to bias the decision in favor of the unborn child it needs to provide a guarantee of financial assistance to the family that makes a decision in favor of life. If it is going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to care for and provide real support for the child it is not fair to the child to demand it be born but refuse to care for it after it is and just let it suffer, just because the family is not wealthy or the parents have no medical insurance.

There are couples who go to fertility clinics and create many embryos that will never be implanted and born. Is a couple that creates a half dozen embryos at a fertility clinic but only brings one or two of them to life guilty of a crime? Assume they have two kids now thanks to the fertility clinic. Should they have been denied that because there were several other embryos that were sacificed in the process of creating them?

Its not all as black and white on either side of the discussion. There is no sensible legal position without compromise on both sides. There are no sensible absolutes in this debate.

Denny
Are you aware that on average, half of the children of people with Down's syndrome inherit their parent's condition?

"Finally being the good relativistic liberal that I am, I am not a one issue voter. I hate the idea of abortions, much as I abhor wars. However the world often looks gray to me."

You are indeed a relativistic-type but your characterization as being good is not.

This is the way libs play the game: they state the absence of absolutism such as God but then declare some type of professed they are the ones that are good, a clear absolutism statement (no gray area).

And they never have a problem with doing something so glibly in contradiction.

If we could rename "Liberals" as "Slackers", they would be easier to explain, wouldn't they?

Wendy the Soul"Less" Wonder
So now you are after the Downs Syndrome fetuses huh? My Cousin Theo has "downs syndrome" he is a very energetic, happy young man. Granted he may never marry or grow old even, but he makes my life a better place every single day. Who are you to deem him less than human. The depth of his humanity is far deeper than you could even comprehend, I find your position pitiful if not contemptuous. You need to crawl back under that little wet moldy stone you came out from............

Can someone reference the legislation and the vote referenced in this comment

The record is clear: Barack Obama voted then, and remains now the only elected U.S. Senator to have voted in favor of denying life saving medical care to children who had been born.

PERIOD!

Thank you

There really is no grey.
I have the privilege of going to church with the oldest living male with down syndrome. He is the most amazing person, as is the family who takes care of him.

I am 30 weeks pregnant with our sixth child, (thus 5carbonfootprints is a bit of a misnomer). We had our first ultra sound at about 19 weeks. It indicated that our child might have downs. I love living in a state where the doctor didn't even mention or even allude to an abortion. He knew that it wasn't even a thought that crossed our minds. The second ultra sound at 29 seems to show that everything is fine and the baby is developing normally. We were relieved, but it made no difference to us in the "humanness" of this baby. This baby had human rights the minute it was a human, when it was concieved.

Believeing in "grey" is a cowards way out. It relieves you from having to really believe in anything. I do not believe in grey, only black and white. This gives me and my children stability and strength. What a blessing.

WE NEED GOD'S MERCY IN NOVEMBER
As a born-again Christian I believe that it is up to the Church (the alive, God honoring Church) as a Body of Christ to repent before God on behalf of this Nation and ask for His mercy. He sent Israel a King when they complained about having judges in charge. They wanted a King like everyone else. He sent Saul, and it was the worst nightmare they could imagine. I pray that we do not receive what we deserve, but that we hit our knees and ask a loving God (who still has a purpose for the U.S.) to please forgive our national sins of abortion, and send us a reformer.
