Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Despite the fact that some in both parties strongly disagree, I believe the twenty-one month campaign cycle needs to become the norm, not the exception, and that in doing so we might actually get to shape elections that truly matter.

Not everyone agrees.

When Karl Rove utters an opinion regarding political cycles the room usually goes all E.F. Hutton. But when he offered his opinion on 2008 recently, it seemed like nobody was listening.

"I think it is going to mean that people develop a persona earlier and wear out their welcome earlier than they would," he told The Politico in an interview. "I think there's going to come some point this year where people are going to basically be saying: 'I'm largely disinterested in the contest.' "

I'm not sure about the last part of his theory, it seems to me that the closer we get to the actual voting the natural ramp-up will be what it needs to be - fever pitch. But to the matter of candidates "wearing out their welcome," let me be the first to say, “I'm all for it.”

In my estimation for far too many election cycles the primary elections and the voter’s lack of involvement in them have given us some less than stellar choices for the general election. Every grassroots group in America should be out in the marketplace - TODAY – pushing, hounding, and stalking candidates on where they stand on every issue we can think of.

I'm personally tired of lending my permission to be led (my vote) to people that have only allowed us to see what they wanted us to see. It seems to me that if I am going to hire someone for a job as important as President - especially given the magnitude of the crises facing us today - I want to kick the tires a little bit to see how she holds together.

We should be asking, even expecting, to see these candidate be run through the ringer. Not because we're masochists and want to see them self-destruct, but because we have the right to know how they will handle stress, how they respond when they make mistakes, and what the tenor of their true operational value system is like (not just the platitudes they give us with carefully styled hair at staged events.)

The longer the courtship, the better chance we have to know that the person we elect will be more like the person that begged us for our vote.

After all it’s not like they're applying for a job at McDonalds.

They are asking our permission to run the biggest economy, strongest defense, and best trained military in the world. They are telling us - or they should be - how they are going to seal up the borders, fight terrorists and jihadists aggressively, and not waste the money I send them out of what I'm earning to care for my family with.

We have the right to see if the consistency of what they say over a long period of time stays parallel with the thinking of the framers of our Constitution - not to mention our Creator.

We have the right to know if they view some humans as less than humans. We need to be shown, when they promise compassion and care for the hurting, if they mean to help those who are hurting towards complete recovery, or if they intend to make them dependent upon their handouts as a way to increase their power base.

If character is the true measure of a person's leadership ability, then the candidates need to have a longer incubation so that under the heat lamps, we can take confidence that they make righteous decisions - not expedient ones.

In the election cycle of 2008 we've already seen cracks in the veneer.

When John Edwards hired two bloggers - whose idea of humor was to attempt to describe upstanding Bible-believing Christians as some sort of sexually repressed, deeply disturbed group of fornicators longing for incestuous relations - we learned that the candidate is not at all worried about associating with people who should not even be allowed to be around most people.

When Hillary Clinton screeches and squawks at Barack Obama for not jumping into the middle of an argument over her ability to tell the truth with David Geffen, we see that Hillary prefers to play the victim rather than lead through proactive confidence in her convictions.

And when John McCain declares it open warfare on men in the administration who had the courage to look 9/11 in the eye - and never blink, only to follow it up with a serenade about how Bush is ignoring "global warming," we see how anger and maverick insanity have all but cost him the nomination.

For the American voter, the individual who says to the Government - you have my permission to run the nation for now, it will never be about finding a candidate who is without flaws. Rather for "We the People" it is about the gritty, not-so-glamorous, way of handling those flaws, and more importantly responding to them that we need to see. And we need to see more of them - not less.

If we did - we might just see higher turnout in our state primary elections. As a result we might get more competitive races, more sharply refined debates, and a contest of ideas that truly deserve the attention of a great nation.

So keep these extended election cycles in place, those that enter the waters will know what they face, and "We the People" will have a better chance to make the best decision possible.

And that just may mean - less buyer's remorse!

Good work Mr. McCullough
It would be really great to get to vote "for" someone rather than "against" this election but I don't see a candidate I can get excited about yet. We need a statesman who is concerned about national security, securing the border, projects strength and no-non-sense boldness, with a veto pen to stop the ridiculous spending.

That said, roughly half the people in this country appear to be insane. What issue could appeal to them to get such a man elected, and where/who is he? Mr. Sowell has not indicated he will run. Any leaders w/ guts out there? WE need yOU.

I AGREE, but.......
A few days ago I said much the same thing as this column in another post and it is nice to see I am not alone in my thinking.

This guy Kevin is pretty smart, I don't think I mentioned that though.

No need to go over his points again in detail but I do like the extra time to review all the faces out there. Give some time for more alternatives to come to the surface so-to-speak.

Unlike Steven Speilberg I cannot afford to run back-to-back galas for Obama and Clinton. But I want to hear about Tancredo and Paul and others too. Maybe give some time for the moneyed to flesh out their "vision", if they have any vision beyond the title and power.

I understand the unfortunate need for massive amounts of money to compete for a national election. I don't like it, but you have to play with the big boys, especially since McCain-Feingold stifled individual's speech.

Maybe a universal Primary Day could cut the power into 50 pieces, not 2 or 3? Public funding, ONLY, of campaigns is repugnant to me. [Give money to politicians for their personal campaigns? YUK!] But it would even the playing field somewhat?

However with the Internet, and some decorum in the discussions, I think we would all benefit from protracted discussion and candidate examination.

Oh, and let us not forget that never seen but much needed option on the ballots; NONE OF THE ABOVE.

You may have something Kevin
And on the bright side, if the politicians are all out on the campaign trial. They won't be in Congress passing bad laws and screwing things up.

As Will Rogers said:
"This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer."

Already
I've eliminated every candidate in the dim party. That was a no brainer.

Then, like LadyRebel said we have half of the population who appear to be insane, so none of the deep flaws that come out on these politicians will make any difference to them. How long have we seen the flawed "Hillary" and parts of the population still like this candidate.

It looks like Obama will run on the anti-war platform. That's all a percentage of this population wants to know. If he is ever seriously challenged by any of the media, I would be shocked.

Well, on with the show. It's a longer show and we will be entertained a bit longer, but whether this length changes any minds on the left is questionable.

How?
How can we really understand the role, contributions, affects and entanglements of being The President? I am pretty sure I do not. If I do not understand the job description how can I determine and support a choice? I hate it but eliminating obvious scoundrels seems to me the only tack.

Money
Candidates have to get the support of big contributors before they're committed to another candidate. That's why it starts so early. As usual Kevin missed it.

Hillary better than Obama
Of course I am for any republican over any democrat (preferably a Brownback or a Huckabee or Hunter, but I'd settle for Giuliani), but I think we conservatives have a duty to make sure that Obama is not the dimmocrat candidate. The biggest issue is the war against the jihadists, and I think Hillary is tougher, meaner than Obama, if god forbid a dimmocrat has to win.

my 2 cents
"Wearing out their welcome."

THAT part I agree with. That's why I keep bringing up the name of Evan Bayh. The dems are going to knock each other out over and over and sooner or later even THEY have to realize how dumb they look and then Bayh says - "how about me?" Middle of the road candidate from a REPUBLICAN state.

You all have my word that if I am right I will jump to the highest rooftop and say "I TOLD YOU SO" and if I am wrong I will pull an Emily Latella - "never mind".

leaders
Who really cares? they are all a bunch of elitists who don't care about the people anyway. And whose to say this country will survive two years of President Pelosi. If Bush had the courage to reject the Democrats agenada on every bill they pass, I'd believe their was hope for the country, but it won't happen. I don't see anyone capable of leading this nation. It is one of God's judgments on a nation to take away its leaders. Who knows, maybe we've already killed all the leaders through abortion, but man in his finite wisdom knows best.

To Town father/Don't go For Mrs. Clinton
Don't kid your self that Hillary would be better than Obama. She would bring back Victomhood and the Welfare State. Aso her triangulating about the Iraq War should not give you comfort that she would be tougher. All she would do is take a poll and which ever way the political wind is blowing is the way she would go. She is the epitome of a "Windmil Politician".

Kimberly
When I read posts like your latest, I get this vision of a witch hysterically cackling over the steamy cauldon as she conjures a vision of her victim falling into every trap her noxious spells have created.

Clearly, the insanity of liberalism has taken hold of your mind, and will only be satisfied when it finally captures your soul.

Such a pity...

Is Kimberly really Animalgirl?

....Kimbat ...are you really Animalgirl posting under a pseudonym? ...

.....I cannot imagine two seperate entities encompassing the same identical slavic worship of Liberalism and the mindless devotion to the Socialist causes of the Democratic Party ...

.....are you twins seperated at birth or the result of an evil cloning experiment gone awry? ...

.....I love it when you point out all the character flaws of Giuliani ...flaws that you would defend to the death if only he were a Democrat .....COLOSSUS

Primus54
When she says..."We WANT a leader that takes part in our country's security efforts and it's bomb drills - not some clown out riding his bike while others face security issues."

She is evidently unaware that the President (any President) Has preset security plans that he must follow. He has no choice in the matter. As the secret service takes complete control over him, the first lady, and VP. Whisking them away to parts unknown.

The security drills be conducted are for Public benefit and safety.

Talk about grabbing at straws!

Opps
Should be.. drills being conducted.

The real method of
ellimination is to get rid of all the socialists, but sometimes that eliminates ALL of the candidates. During the 2000 election after eliminating all the socialists there were no candidates, so I voted for what appeared to be the least socialist, GWB. As it turned out, he was still pretty well eat up with the socialist bug. In 2008, I will not vote for ANY candidate who is a socialist. Not this time.

"a leader/country's security efforts"
I'm sorry, was she saying that she supports the border fence and border patrol, wiretapping, stopping illegal immigration, the war on terror. She must have done a flip flop somewhere and I missed it.

Kimmie
What about your idol Bubba Klintonista who received his less than honorable unmentionables in the oval office? What do you call that?

What of Hillary who to this date is still under a cloud for illegal activities as a lawyer?

Edwards is an ambulance chasing two-bit lawyer who has made it almost impossible for OBGYNs to practice medicine.

Obama has no credits to his name other than he's against the war and is a big socialist promoting partial birth abortions for all.

What a crop of dems there are!

How do you eliminate
all socialist candidates when half the country has turned socialist?

I am looking for a candidate who will:
a)Aggressively pursue American interests around
the globe, especially in regards to crushing
militant Islam;
b)Extend and deepen the Bush tax cuts, and
begin work on simplifying the tax code;
c)Close the border with Mexico and rationalize
our immigration policies, excluding people
with no intent or interest in assimilating;and
d)Appoint judges who will interpret existing
law, rather than issuing fiats from the bench.

I don't see that candidate yet.Maybe an exten-
ded presidential campaign will produce one.

Article points to a need.
Starting earlier COULD have the affect of giving grassroots more time to voice opinion so the people can make the choice for candidates rather than MSM.
In addition to McCain/Finegold;
McCain is trying to silence grassroots politics.
http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewPrint.asp?Page=/Politics/archive/200702/POL20070214b.html

Where MSM can swiftly reach many people, Grassroots takes much longer to reach all the people but has much more credibility.

Vic
Good morning, Vic.
Glad you are up after your crowns last night.

I agree. I will not vote for another halfa**t RINO.
But after you and Lynne went to bed last night (separate of course) some guy on another site started crticizing anyone who would stay home as unpatriotic.

What do you say?

To RODVAL
What did he mean by "stay at home"?

congressional ethics
I, for one, am discused with our congressional reps spending our money "salary, junckets, fact finding missions, etc." politicing for their next step up the power ladder. They are hired"elected" to take care of business at a specific location D.C. I believe that the day they declare a run for president they should resign and let someone take their place that may be interested in tending to business. This means dems and repubs.

Peppermint
Bubba Klintonista? Huh? Explain that one, please

Vic
Stay at home and not vote for either candidate.
If we can't support Hillary or McCain what do we do?
Stay at home?
Is that just giving the libs victory?
Does it matter if the libs win if our guy is just as lib?

To RODVAL
I will never "stay at home" and not vote. The Republican party elite don't get the message that way. Look at what they are saying now after the 06 election. If McShame gets the nod for the Republicans (low probability) I will either vote for a 3rd party candidate or a write in candidate.

Besides that, there is a lot more on the ballot than the president.

Vic
Allright I agree, but most people equate stay at home with third party vote. Rush for example says a vote for a Libertarian is a wasted vote.
I disagree. When given a Hobsen's choice you can't vote just to win. The win is not only hollow but it is my contention that I would rather be hung by my enemy than my "friend". Therefore if I were forced to vote and choose between only Hillary or McCain I would even vote for Hillary. At least the failures would not be blamed on conservatives. The failures would naturally be covered up by the MSM and Carvilles (it's only sex and everybody lies about that) but people still ultimately see the truth whether they admit it or not.

Vic
People who voted for Perot elected BILL CLINTON.

McCain is a Manchurian Candidate who wants to destroy our Constitution and create a Dictatorship.
Hillary is a Stalinist who wants to Socialize America into a European 3rd World nation.

If either were in office it would set the stage for a military coup and most of the people would favor it!

We have to find better choices.

MyOpine
"People who voted for Perot elected BILL CLINTON."
Agreed.
"McCain is a Manchurian Candidate who wants to destroy our Constitution and create a Dictatorship.
Hillary is a Stalinist who wants to Socialize America into a European 3rd World nation."
Agreed.

So what do you do if given that choice?

I hope
that we do get someone other than what they are called the three front runners now.

I am not supporting anyone yet as I am waiting to see what else shakes out.

I do not agree with a lot of things Rush says. There really is no such thing as a wasted vote. And true, if there is no difference between the candidates, other than a (R) after one's name, what have we gained by voting for the (R).

Sad sad sad
When I think of how much the people in the states which elect Ms Clinton, Teddy "let-er swim" Kennedy and all his ilk from MASS. are so very duped and stupid enough they cannot see the light of day--- well I can only hope and pray that a longer lead-in time will indeed, allow the country the chance to assess some of these do-does who are running. Mass. is beyond hope, and there are far too many others that are in the same boat. Perhaps the longer lead-in time would make people sit up and take notice, and not allow these 'big-daddy-government' idiots to continue in control.

RODVAL
What would I do if given a choice between Clinton & McCain?
Probably vote for Clinton.
If America is going to be destroyed by a Communist, it might just as well be a real Communist instead of a cheap plastic sellout.
This is why;
http://www.geoffmetcalf.com/mccain.html
Attacks on our 1st & 2nd Ammendment are further cause.

Rather than choose between two evils;
I would rather vote FOR Tancredo.
http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=50703

bullgod
I share your goals of a candidate. Let me know if one surfaces.

What's Not to Like
If your liberal democrat neighbor came to you and said, "John, I've been looking at things over these years, and I've come to the conclusion that perhaps I have been mistaken. I can see now that my liberal friends are wrong on most issues, and that the conservatives have the only answers that makes sense," you would no doubt embrace him as a convert to the conservative cause. Your new-found friend could probably make better arguments to liberals than you could. And you would hereafter count him as a sensible person.

So I'm having trouble seeing why conservatives are not excited about Romney. Given his financial acumen, both in turning around the Olympics, and in turning around the Massachusetts deficits, is there any doubt he's not a good administrator?
Given his record against abortion and gay-marriage as governor, is there any doubt he isn't now pro-life? (Google "An Open Letter Regarding Governor Mitt Romney")
What is there in his background to be embarassed
about? MOrmonism? Surely you jest. Show me where he's ever used that to anybody's detriment.

IMO, we finally have a candidate that we can trust. I don't buy into the media hype that he's a "flip-flopper." If someone is an atheist, and becomes a believer, we don't say they "flip-flopped," we say they've converted. We need all the converts we can get, especially competent ones.
The lenghtly campaign will give us a chance to really get to know these candidates. Given that you won't agree with anyone on all the issues, I think we've got a pretty good choice.

In case you're interested...
Just heard...

Ron Paul WILL be on Lou Dobbs on Monday evening. My understanding from what was said is that he will be discussing his possible bid for President.

concord2123
Bubba Klintonista is Bill Clinton. I couldn't get back on until now so sorry it took me so long to answer your question.

Peppermint
yeah, I get who you're referring to, but how did you arrive at "Klintonista"?

Peppermint
I find a simple "Beelzebubba" makes a shorter nickname, and conveys all the love I have for our former philanderer-in-chief.

Kevin Mc.
...more sharply refined debates????

How about we just get back to REAL DEBATES?
I for one am tired of the 'scripted' format that has become commonplace.
Let us watch the candidates exchange ideas, facts, insults and, maybe even a few punches if necessary. Kinda like here at TH.

AND lets have more of them too! Considering this cycle has started plenty early by anyones standards let's get some real debates going, soon.
The 'moderator' should only be given the job of turning off the microphone of any candidate who attempts a filibuster, nothing more. Run the same format for both parties seperately and everyones happy.

There is plenty of time now to have as many one on one debates as it takes for all the candidates to confront each other individually in a 'round-robin' style event.
Though I'm leary of allowing TV ratings determine who gets more air-time in a second round of debates, it would make substance a premium for every candidate.
They would have to get their platform out before the first round is concluded and hope it's what people want to hear or THEY GO HOME.
Kind of a political "American Idol Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" type 'show' and, may even get the younger generation to pay attention to what's going on.

At the very least it would eliminate, or at least curtail the undue influence big money has on elections because even the little guy would get serious face-time on TV providing a forum to put their ideas to the American voting public. Allowing us to then make an 'informed' choice.

But the bottom line is that it's got to be better than what we've had going on these past couple of decades.

Utopia is a funny place...

andrews
see, now that's clever. I don't agree with the sentiment, but nevertheless, I like it.

Too much, too Soon?
What this writer is proven is the fact that America in reality has become its own outhouse, where money has America truly on her nose and in reality, morally; nothing but lies and lies from the so self-proclaimed Bible reading and praying Christian President, and on down the line and everywhere, who in my view thinks he is God, like all previous Emperors, with a direct line into heaven. Nothing, but nothing will ever reverse America's immoral trend, but a disaster bigger than herself; no different than all previous Empires. However, in the case of America, nothing will stop her invasion of the world and spreading human suffering with its ever more inhumane and horrendouse war machinery, but the final intervention of God himself. For the record, I am a Staunch Conservative Christian Republican, and became one shortly after arriving, because, of the decency of Dwight D. Eisenhower, as a legal, yes a hundred times I wish to say it, as a legal immigrant from a ruthless dictatorship 51 years ago, to an America that now seems to be gone forever. Yes, this President invades a nation whose murderer dictator was once a bedfellow with America for oil, and now this is behind it again, while, God only knows how many men, women and children including unborn ones, this guy killed while in a warm bed with America, whose envoy was none other than Rumsfeld. Yes, no outcry over this absolute ungodly act by America, especially those Conservative Christians who are hot in support of the present American intervention there! Oh yes! Falwell needs his ever bigger SUV to drive to Church to preach God's love, with him the only one in that monster and so things go! Yes, American women actually claim th have it better than the Iraqui women while more American women now live without a man in the house than do! Yes, if children are wanted the e-mail, is ready to supply human eggs or sperms from overseas, because it is more economical. This America rsembles more and more that of dairy farm where cows are running the show where not even an actuall bull is needed anymore. The fewer and fewer children on top of it end up in daycares centers, no different what the Soviets had in mind in their haydays! Yes, America women more and more, have man on the run for cover even as a woman living alone with no man in the house travels the world over telling in essence for man to get lost. So, here are my thoughts! I know some will curse me and some may say: God bless you may son! You have spoken truth for this time! By the way, I am absolutely certain that I am speaking for the Founding Fathers. However, were they to rise, they would even used harsher language than mine ever can. Those men gave their very life to bring forth a nation out of the ruthless British Empire, but now would find an even more ruthless one in such a short time.

Rodval and Vic
Regarding your conversation, you should take a look at my blog essay "Principle versus Expediency", as I address the issue of the liberalization of the Republican party. Just click on my name.

Frankly, if the Rep candidate ends up being either McCain or Giuliani, I will withold my vote for President.

At some point, the R party needs to wake up and smell the coffee, or we're going to end up with a system like Britain; do you consider their "Conservative" party conservative? Is that the choice you'd like to have as we move forward?

I can't believe I agree with a NeoCon
Yes I agree the longer the campaign the better we know who and what were voting for, and longer to expose the stupidity of most candidates have when it comes to the Constitution.
Remember that piece of paper that is the rule of law for even politicians.

Romney put SC to sleep
I caught Romney for the first time on C-span "Road to the Whitehouse".
He was really dorky when he tried to get the South Carolinans to get excited about his campaign. If Romney hopes to carry Southern Conservatives he got a Uphill battle.
It was as if a foreigner from a different country were speaking to the people in SC.

Now Ron Paul would have been accepted as right at home with them southerns down in SC.

How Romney has star power is beyond me unless your from NY or LA or some other northern coastal city, but in the South he's going to put them to sleep.
Guiliani may do a little better even though his personality is lacking too for the southern man and woman.

Is it them or us? It's them, right?
Like many conservatives, I am having a hard time getting excited about the Republican candidates who have announced their candidacies. I must admit that at different times I had experienced some initial enthusiasm for both McCain (in 1999) and Romney (in recent months); however, my excitement for each diminished considerably upon reading much of the negative press about them in news reports and conservative columns. I suppose this disillusionment has happened to many other conservative readers.

Are we unenthused because the candidates are so unappealing, or because we conservative voters are too picky, too negative, too spoiled?

We almost universally admire Reagan, but our love for him may be a somewhat idealized memory. He had his faults and made his missteps, yet we overlooked them and still dearly loved him. Maybe that was as much a sign of our youthful trusting nature and optimism as it was his remarkable leadership.

Have we changed? Will the generation of conservatives who most energetically supported Reagan ever be willing to jump on the bandwagon for another conservative candidate, or are we too cynical now?

Cynicism has, unfortunately, soured the support of the current President. Based on the dismal approval ratings I keep reading about, I feel like I must be one of the few Americans left who still admires and ardently supports President Bush. While I disagree with a few things he has done, I have never expected him to be someone he is not. I realize he has views that sometimes differ with mine, but I appreciate the many convictions we share. I also appreciate the untold personal sacrifices he makes in order to serve honorably in the most difficult job in the world.

If the problem in this extremely early stage of the next election is truly the lack of a dynamic, authentically conservative, electable leader among the current choices, then we need to recruit the right candidate. Shall we share some possible names? What do you think of Oliver North or Bill Bennett as possible candidates? What about taking another look at Steve Forbes? I'm eager to know whom my fellow conservatives want in the race. It's early enough to find the right person if he isn't among the current pool and ... IF HE EXISTS.

Even so, there remains the sobering possibility that, because of our unrealistic expectations, there is no living American with enough experience, talent, intelligence, character, charisma, organizational support, leadership skill, political conservatism, and bona fide Nicene-Creedist Christianism to unite the Republican base and enough of the rest of the electorate to win the White House.

If that is the case, it might be that we conservative voters have some more growing up to do.

Here here..
Here here..

Let's not forget to add to that list above Mrs. "Otis" Hillary's scary, and downright insulting, attempt at Christian womanhood at a recent gathering in the South for Bible believing ladies.

I, for one, would like to see a permanent list made, (somewhere online perhaps), of all the injurious, and misguided, efforts of folks like her which pander to Conservatives and Christians by the likes of these sundry and various "techniques".

You know the ones, like above, where the candidate's voice changes, or they suddenly get a quick dose of "faith". They begin to whine and drone old hymns, or use catchphrases they picked up visiting a token Bible class, or by watching CBN..

Personally speaking, I think sudden "religion" is the lowest of the low, in terms of those running, and in how they express themselves on platforms to the people.

It does one of three bad things.

It insults the listener/viewer.

It degrades the presenter.
e.g In these cases, people like Mr. Obama and Ms. Shrill, pretending redemptive faith.

Finally, it polarizes both sides even further on issues of great debate.

Maybe that last one isn't so bad. I might even say good for it.

My biggest concern is naive floundering Christians, and those who aren't clear about the candidates, their stances, the issues.

These are the folks who get hoodwinked by Clinton and Obama's theatrics.

Of course, these are the votes they are hoping to win..

It will take immense clarity on these candidates, what they are saying, where they truly stand, and about one's own moral barometer, before all is said and done in these races..if voters are to make enlightened, responsible, and moral decisions come next November..
