Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Why does John McCain hate the GOP?

Furthermore how does he expect to win their support for 2008?

Complaints are many from those of us who might be inclined to support him. He sought to author the end of political free speech with his unconstitutional campaign finance reform efforts. He seems clueless when it comes to one of the issues that his base voters care about – the protection of marriage. And he seems to be forgetting that an energized base is what he will need to win the GOP primaries much less the actual general election for President in the next go around.

In this month’s Vanity Fair John McCain seems to have further twice insulted those he seeks the support of. The ten-page tediously detailed profile delves into the Senator’s inconsistencies on the protection of marriage, his feelings on the war on terror, and his near hostility towards protecting the border.

"I think the fence is least effective. But I'll build the goddamned fence if they want it."

In those seventeen simple words the “maverick” (which the media invented through him) has all but signed his political death wish. Republicans can not trust McCain, and neither should the nation at large.

Need reasons why? His most signature work in the U.S. Senate sought to undue guaranteed protections for free speech – particularly in an election cycle where free speech is of most importance. In his own efforts to leverage power in Senate proceedings he purposefully disrupted the will of his own majority party and further slowed down the needed debate on judges. In helping to orchestrate the gang of 14, he stymied clear consensus candidates to the courts as appointed by the President.

But in the Vanity Fair quote he demonstrates something not seen before – direct hostility towards his own base of voters.

McCain, though a champion on fighting the effective fight on Islamic fascists who seek to kill us, has seemed unplugged, uninterested, and yes hostile to voices who are calling for secure borders. He stood by as President Bush locked out John Kyl – his fellow senator from Arizona, and a true champion against illegal immigration – from proceedings that were designed to brainstorm solutions to the border dilemma.

But his statement takes on an even more sinister tone.

John McCain has spent a good deal of time and resources attempting to convince faith-based conservatives that he is the real deal in recent months. Hiring an evangelical blogger to argue his case, appearing at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, and seeking audiences with other evangelicals, McCain has attempted to say to the GOP’s most valued voting block that he is one of us.

It is interesting that the one statement reveals consistency in McCain’s character in two ways – yet neither of them helpful.

If McCain were serious in his efforts to reach the faith-based voter, taking God’s name in vain is a stupid thing to do. Evangelicals, Catholics, even serious Jews all believe that God’s name is sacred and combining it with the idea of hellish damnation is in fact defamation to the Creator.

It may come as a shock to McCain, but some people are actually, truly offended by such a muff.

But in using this style of communication he heaps mountains of contempt upon that same base that is rightfully worried about who, what, and why people are crossing our borders without us knowing anything about them, why they are coming, and what they are bringing with them.

At one point in the Vanity Fair piece the author observes that McCain is not good at talking about social conservatism, and that he is even worse at faking it.

Both aspects of that statement are not only readily obvious but ripe with an aroma that has already caused most faith-based voters to look elsewhere for the GOP candidate of choice in 2008.

McCain of course is only one of the problematic three that are all facing tremendous uphill battles in aspiring to be the party’s mantle bearer. Guiliani fiscally strong and far more consistent in his politics day to day – but is firmly entrenched on the wrong side of the abortion and marriage debates to win any or all of the bible-belt states. Romney is right on the issues, yet his own faith of Mormonism is scary, strange, and apostate to the same block of voters that McCain and Guiliani have also spurned.

John McCain’s voting record could have helped him in the outreach to pro-life voters. But his denseness, arrogance, and lack of discipline have all but done in him in the election before the election.

It didn’t have to be that way. There may even be time to correct course.

It seems terribly unlikely though that a man who has earned the bulk of his praise through being so far removed from the base of his party’s voters, will now suddenly see the light and embrace them sincerely.

I guess however, one can always hope….

Huh?
Did KM say that there may be time for McCain to correct course? That is an incredible statement to make after reading this article. McCullough lists everything that makes John McCain unsuited to become the standard bearer for the Republican Party, and then suggests that a change in course would make him OK?

As long as he is active on the political scene he will be unacceptable. When he is no longer there I will remember him with disgust. Kevin must have been sleepy when he wrote this one.

Kevin you were...
right on till the last couple of sentences. There is no hope for McCain, at least not as far as I am concerned. I don't believe the other two are any different.

I won't vote for a liberal Republican anymore than I will vote for a liberal Democrat.

McCain
If John McCain is the best the Republican party has to offer, we are in big trouble. I don't even understand why he is a member of the GOP with his liberal inclinations. I echo Farmer's Wife in that I won't vote for a liberal Republican.

farmer's Wife
So you'll be sitting out the presidential election, then?

I'm relieved that we finally have GOP candidates who aren't boot licking sychophants for mega-churches!

Another Shameless Plug...!
My blog is updated with cool pix of the newest Russian fighter, and some silliness from North Korea...you gotta see it to believe it!

Maybe we'll get lucky...
...and Mr. McCain won't be around for the nomination. Given his age and his anger management issues, perhaps he'll blow a gasket and die first.

Just a thought. I, too, would not vote for him. At this point, I'm not seeing anyone I could vote for. But it's still relatively early yet.

To change the subject, (shameless blog plug), have you ever asked yourself what politics would be like if there were an open frontier (like there was until about 1912) and we had some place to go start a new and better life in a new country built on sound economic, social, and political principles? I have just posted a survey proposed by an Aussie, Kim Peart, who'd like to get a campaign going to educate and interest at least ten percent of the world's population in developing a Solar Civilization.

Before you tell me that's impossible, the Fall Edition of Ad Astra, the magazine of the National Space Society, had an article about China's Spring Festival being all about space. There is a huge chunk of humanity already getting serious about space development. If we don't want to look at a Red Moon, we'd better get serious, too.

So check out Kim's survey, and definitely check out http://www.nss.org and the Space Settlement section.

Then ask yourself if chewing old soup--i.e. moaning, groaning, and complaining about the lack of viable candidates for the conservative point of view in 2008--is really worth your time and energy.

John McCain doesn't even pretend to
be conservative. He not only disagrees with most Republicans, he often comes out publicly to oppose us.

His poor choice of sponsers in George Soros could have been excused as naivete, but since Soros' megalomaniac intent has become apparent, McCain should have denounced him publicly.

The other issue was in relation to Abu Grabbe, when McCain went around denouncing the US being involved in "torture," as if that described what we were doing. On this issue, he became the darling of the hate-America-first talkshows, and did his best to stab the Republican Party in the back.

Once again, if this was due to naivete, then how can he be trusted as leader of the free world in such troubled times?

And if it were due to calculation, how can he be trusted as a man of character?

Rose
Not that you weren't practically saying this, but naivete at McCain's age IS a character flaw.

Just another reason to NOT vote for him
McCain is the media's pick for the GOP. He would lose against ANY candidate the Dems want to put up.

RE: Choice for 2008
As an Independant voter, several months ago I was leaning towards John McCain, and John Cox as a second runner up in my view - I definitely will NOT be voting for any Democrat as any of them are way too far left, liberal, and out of touch with true American values and morals!

And just why does Rudy Gulliani consider himself Republican? He's really a Democrat in "Republican's" clothing!

However, not being totally convinced of my choice, I started really studying Mitt Romney...and because of McCain's age, temperment, and awkwardness in public - I am now 100% in Romney's favor! McCain has truly turned me off!

GO MITT!

Jacosta

Why is McCain
even running? Did he do his strategy session like the other candidates? Who supports this man? So far I've seen no one on this site who would support him.
It must be an MSM driven campaign to make sure Hillary or Obama wins.

The MSM will indoctrinate all of those people who don't have access to other forms of media like the internet to get a real sense of who McCain is. The MSM will play up this guy for all its' worth to make sure he is the candidate. What's new about the media taking sides and helping to steer the elections?

McCain has been the media darling for quite some time now. That should tell everyone where this guy has his feet grounded.

a vote for McCain is a wasted vote
Currently that media darling McCain is listed as the front-runner in all the polls. I have often wondered who the media interviews in all these polls. Particularly since they are more often wrong than they are right. Among all of the conservative and libertarian blogs that I read, McCain is viewed with absolute distain. To celtic-dragon; I will never vote for McCain either and I am no friend of the “mega churches” and no I will not be sitting out the next election. If McCain wins the Republican nomination I will vote for the Libertarian candidate (or some other non-liberal). Before you say that this is a wasted vote, based on what I have seen of McCain I don’t think there is any difference between him and Hillary so, in effect, a vote for McCain would also be a wasted vote.

Where is our Churchill
McCain, he couldn't win before and he can't win now. He tries so hard to please everyone, he pleases no one. Is it any wonder the media has been hyping him lately as the best hope for the GOP? McCain running against Hillary would be a gaurentee that Bill would be first lady come 2009.

Another media darling, Rudy Gulliani, is hyped because for all intensive purposes is a social liberal Democrat. Rudy can pull a lot of votes from the blue state urban areas on his record and could possibly pull a win, but on every issue that matters to conservatives, other than fiscal, he is in opposition, no matter how he tries to hide it. If he wins, we have abortion on demand, gay marraige, and every other nightmare conjured up by the socialist left. He's also a member of the internationalist club like our present administration, os we will have continued uncontrolled immigration and further amnesty for illegals. He might be good for some aspects of foreign policy, but if we can't fix our problems at home, there won't be a United States left to have a foreign policy before long.

Mitt Romney, another case of Rudy'ism, without the fiscal advantage. He has put on a good front of appearing as a social conservative, but behind the scenes, he is anethma to the family and any sense of social conservativism. From what I've read about him, it appears he puts up a lot of protesting about gay marraige but does little about it. By the Mass constitution, gay marraige is still not legal, and Mitt could have overturned their decision easily and even removed certain members from the court for overreaching their authority, but did nothing except have press conferences. Mitt recieved a lot of money from gay lobbies and aint going to anger that loud pushy base.

No, none of the players on the field for the GOP even recognize a soveriegn USA, and have bought into various globalist day-dreams. Is this what we have come to, where Presidential elections are reduced to which candidate will destroy the USA more slowly? How depressing.

McCain enjoys huge support
in the military establishment and that is a good thing in these times. I've met the man and I served under his father and I am not so quick to write him off.
I would like to think he's more conservative than he appears, but I truly do not know. I know this, dems will vote for him, even with the hildabeast in the race. We conservatives cannot allow the libs to take the WH in 08,if McCain can win and I believe he can, we need to forget the small stuff and remember who are enemies are and who would be the best man to take the fight to them.
Until they find a way to clone TR, I still believe JM is our best bet in 08.

Newt in '08!
Yeah, yeah... I know. A lot of negative baggage which the MSM would have a field day with, but if we want a real, Reagan conservative who "gets it", Newt could be our best candidate.

If it came down to Newt vs. Hillary in the general election, Newt has fewer negatives (polls) so he could definitely win. And in debates, I think he'd emerge as the clear winner to mainstream Americans (even though the MSM would try to spin it toward Hillary).

But if he's thinking about a run... he'd better get started soon.

Mr. McCullough,
please stop saying Mitt Romney's Mormon religion is "scary." I can buy "strange," but when you write "scary," you sound 'scary,' and ignorant. Again, as a MA witness, Mitt has a lot of faults, probably more fluff than stuff, but his theology played zero role in his administration of this state. As for how he lives out his religion, as far as we know, and there is daily microscopic attention, there are zero skeletons, which is better than most. And I still urge my fellow conservatives to at least look into Sam Brownback's candidacy, before writing him off.

Dems and MSM like McCain
because he is arrogant, petty, vindictive, stubborn, and prone to childish temper tantrums, JUST like they are. But mostly because in the past he's attacked Bush, the GOP, and evangicals, the necessary triad for dhimmicrat candidates. The fact that he is strong in opposing Islamofacists is a slide for them because HE has the necessary military credentials.

Here in AZ, we are reduced to only one Senator, Jon Kyl, who is of the highest quality and an exceptionally bright representative. We used to have two, but the other guy took our votes and money and began to represent the enemedia and liberals, who saw how easily he could be pulled over to their side (McCain/Fiengold & McCain/Kennedy) and used against us. When his usefulness as a thorn in the GOP's side is done, they will discard him like a dirty napkin.

I believe McCain is a meglomaniac whose goal in life is to surpass the rank of his Admiral father and grandfather. Since his career was stagnated by 7 years in the Hanoi Hilton, his ambition is to be President, or at least SecDef is the driving force in his life. Being volatile, prickly, abrasive, and mentally unstable, he wouldn't be a good fit for either job.

We also have a lot of Mormons here, and some of the very best people I've known throughout my life, were members of this Church. There is no reason for anyone to be nervous about Mitt Romney's personal faith, anymore than Kennedy's should have been a concern in 1960. As goofy as some of their traditions are, like most Christian assemblies, they aspire to His kingdom in heaven, not dominating a kingdom on earth.

I haven't settled on Romney, as we still have quite a long road to go, but he is interesting, though not as smart as Newt. I like Rudy very much and don't hold his personal religion (pro-choice) against him. He's probably p-whipped by a woman into supporting baby-killers, same as I was with my first wife.

At least
I could vote for Rudy, although my first choice is J C Watts. Rudy has lots of flaws, but seems to have some solid core. McCain is a plastic man, driven by the prevailing winds. No telling what he would do. He shows very little signs of intelligence. Newt is my sdcond choice.

Let's get Mr. Magoo to run.
As a conservative who has become increasingly disenchanted with the GOP(though I did vote GOP for my governor and congressman), I have not yet made up my mind about McCain.

Don't like Campaign Finance Reform. I do applaud McCain's awareness of the threat posed by Islamism, altho I can't understand why he refuses to see the threat a porous border represents. He is just as wrong on the border issue, as is Bush or the democrats.

And, speaking of the border, I find it incongruous that many posters here harpoon John McCain on this, yet give Bush, the most influential GOP leader, a complete pass.

Bush sets the tone, or did anyway, on most issues. I just find it strange that so little hostility is directed at Bush on this issue, compared to McCain.

So what if Bush is not on the ballot? He still sets the tone.

It is almost as if some republicans would sooner undergo a root canal procedure, than criticize this president.

Anyway, that aside, I believe that as the possibility of a Hillary presidency becomes more viable in the minds of some republicans, many will "hold their noses" and vote for any republican that is capable of frustrating another Clinton presidency, even if it turns out to be McCain, Giuliani, Romney, or Mr. Magoo.

various
Seawolf: McCain enjoys huge support in the military establishment because, unlike Kerry & Murtha, he did serve our nation admirably.
However, as has been stated by many WWII vets: "Serving admirably in the military doens't necessarily qualify one for the position of Commander & Chief - otherwise we would be president of the USA". (McCain can't be trusted by conservatives - he is indeed a RINO.)

gently99: J C Watts is one of the better representatives of conservatism available. His electability is doubtful due to his mild support of affirmative action.

Lydia (& Primus54): These days Newt is cautious not to use language that reveals him as a globalist. However, he hasn't really changed from that position. (Conservatives vote for what appeasr to be the least of evils while liberals vote for what is the greatest of evils.)

Lydia
Evil? You have no idea, my dear! *said in a ridic*lous Transyvanian accent* Let me see your neck...

roadmaster,
I like that "dhimmicrats," I'll 'borrow' that if you don't mind!

Pitbull
You are correct. The comment was divisive and unworthy. My apologies. I feel that the current President has addressed concerns of only a narrow segment of Christianity, so I should have phrased my views in another manner. Again, I apologize for any hurt I may have caused.

I agree Primus54
I love Newt in every way except for his personal issues that the media will bring up over and over. And to be honest, normally I wouldn't even consider voting for someone who has been divorced as often as he has been. But these are dangerous times and I truly believe we are in a fight for our very lives against Islamofascists. Whatever it takes, we must win this fight. Even if I have to vote for someone with a questionable personal life, this is one election that has to be won by someone who knows we must win the war against these terrorists.

In my opnion, so far Newt seems to be the only one who truly gets it. All those other issues are important but they just don't matter compared to this very fight for our lives right now.

Newt in 08
Primus, you're right about Newt having some "baggage". However, we need to remember that, come election time, any Republican will have baggage, either real or manufactured by the MSM. Newt is a bright man, and has proven that he can advance a conservative agenda. I don't see anyone better at this point, I'm afraid.

J C Watts
I'm a bit surprised at how often I hear Watts mentioned as a possible candidate in '08. He is a true conservative that I would gladly support. My biggest problem with him was disappointment when he chose not to run for re-election to the House. That decision suggests to me, though, that he might not have the "fire in the belly" needed to win.

I would enthusiastically support a Watts/Gingrich or a Gingrich/Watts ticket. Either would be my idea of a conservative dream (and, better yet, a liberal and MSM nightmare).

On the subject of McCullough's column: McCain/Feingold and McCain/Kennedy. Nothing else need be said.

Gently 99
I'm with you, JC Watts I would truly support, as I would Newt.

I have voted Republican almost all of my life starting with Barry Goldwater. The only time I voted Unrepublican was the second race of George H W Bush. But I didn't vote for Clinton. If McCain or Guilliani are the Republican candidate I will not vote for either of them.

Alex
Yes and yes.

I am afraid a true patriot cannot get the publicity and financing to mount a serious campaign. (Odd, since it could be successful, see 1994.)

What has McCain become?
Seems to me as if McCain is the Republican Party's own Jesse Jackson....shooting off his mouth and unable to hide his true agenda.....He needs to "get over" himself as does Jackson....both are living in a dream world that makes them believe they are the great emancipators of the truth! Pul-lease...we are SO OVER their ilk and both are so non-productive...outliving their purpose)(if they ever had one). They need to go away before they do some serious damage to their "causes".

islamofascists,
or 'jihadists,' the term I prefer. Although I am primarily a pro-life, original-intent-judge conservative, I agree that this war is issue #1. Has anyone read "Because they hate," by Brigitte Gabriel, born in Lebanon, immigrant to USA? Powerful personal testimony, although the book is poorly edited, lots of misspellings, etc. We must take them at their word, they blatantly explicitly brag of their plans, they hate us, they are out to achieve world domination, they're deadly serious, the've demonstrated it over and over and most in US don't take them seriously, because our secular culture cannot and won't try to comprehend the category 'religion.'

Scary?
Is townfather the only poster beside me to be completely disgusted with the "his own faith of Mormonism is scary, strange" blast of bigotry?

I have lived in Utah for 20 years, the past five in the most heavily-concentrated county of Mormons in the world. While I have some reservations about the power of the church as a non-member, with two elementary school kids, the terms "scary" and "strange" to describe Mormons are so ignorant, devisive and prejudiced, that I can only surmise the author's conclusion is based on some type of mythology unrelated to any real-life experience with the Mormon community.

Any of you who call yourselves conservatives should protest this vile and evil description of
Mormonism, a community that reflects conservative values and moral principles as much or more than any other in this nation.

Shame on you, McCulloch.

Barack Obamanation
just picked up this nickname from Doug Giles' article, probably old hat to many.

The only thing
that can make any R candidate viable is some sort of disaster. Another 911, or some such highly visible corner turning event. Otherwise the election is the D's to lose. Despite some kooks in there, so far they doing just fine. Play for time, do nothing except nonentity eyewash like raise minimum wage, keep all the hot potatoes in the air. Clinton did just fine doing this. Bush had 911 and had to make a decision. The voters reward only success, which, for whatever reason he has not had. If something similar happens in next 2 years, and D's look as ineffectual as Bush, almost any R candidate would be hard to beat. That would be a time to nominate Newt or Watts or some other soldi conservative. By the way, Watts has supported AA, but nobody is perfect. Its a nagging worry, but if he was a closet RINO, why be an R in Oklahoma?

It's interesting that you omitted religious out of your above list of social "brave new world" principles. How long do you think it would take a "new country" to fall apart without religious principles? How long would this "new and better life" remain better?

The problem with all utopian societies begins when they begin leaving God out of it, relying upon themselves. This is because mankind wherever he goes, whatever he tries without God, takes himself with him, the arrogant, disobedient, sons and daughters of Adam - a man's self rapidly becomes an arrogant disaster demonstrating over and over various ways to act out man's inhumanity to man. Those of us who imagine we differ, we're better, more "humane," less selfish, are simply proving my point!

And incidently, I use "man" in the pre-Fem Lib. manner. It does, as it once did, in English, refer to both men and women. The post Fem. Lib. use of the words "male and female" to refer to men and women I find offensive. A male and female (what?) could refer to giraffes, or beetles: there's no doubt what a man and woman are. Related to this, whatever happened to "Ladies and gentlemen?" The terms speak volumes from their omission in American language today. No longer ladies and gentlemen, or men and women, what have we become? We're being symstematically dehumanized, for the cause of glorifying humanity, but more importantly for the cause of its deviations and estrangement from The Word and The Light.

Scare the left
If you can't get Newt to run and drive the left insane, how about a Tancredo/Santorum ticket? That should make the left foam at the mouth.

Jude
There's only one religious principle and that's a belief in a higher power, which is an irrelevant principle in a civil society, since a society's principles are conceived and implemented by men.

scary
I did not respond because they way it was worded made it appear to be directed at people besides me, however you are right. It is condescending to assume that anyone else finds Mormonism scary. What I find scary about Romney is that the indications are he is another closet liberal. He can not support the Constitution and also support Gun Control.

Honesty?
How you can muster that word while seeming to agree that Mormonism is scary shows that you don't take the word seriously.

utahnotmormon
Obviously you have no understanding of the Scriptures or Cults.

Not McCain
There's no way I could support McCain in '08.

I like Newt, but I think he's got too much baggage. Tancredo would be great, but he'll be portrayed as a racist. I question Romney's commitment to conservatism. Brownback has a love affair with criminal immigrants.

Sawdust is right, any Republican will be attacked for anything and everything they've ever said.

Tancredo/Watts anyone?

Scriptures and Cults
By all means, anti-socialist, enlighten me as to why I have no understanding of these terms.

IF WE BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME

IF WE DON'T BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME.

The fence. The one that's supposed to keep more illegal aliens from sauntering over the border and staying here as though they belonged.

Money was appropriated for that fence. It may not deter all illegals; it may not deter most illegals; but it will deter some illegals.

So far, not much else is being done. In fact, it seems that acts to keep illegals out are being thwarted by the government right and left. Two border agents have been prosecuted, found guilty of shooting a known drug dealer in the buttock, and of not reporting the discharge of a firearm, and are both due to begin sentences of more than a decade long.

Yes, Senator McCain. I want that fence. I have wanted a "fence" the size of the Great Wall of China protecting our borders, and sometime in the past several months I wrote my Congressmen to express exactly that opinion.

I would also like to have armed National Guardsmen assisting border patrol agents in attempting to stanch the flow of illegals into my country.

I have a distinct memory of armed National Guardsmen in the city of New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina. Isn't protecting our border from illegals just as important as protecting whatever it was that was being protected in New Orleans about a year and a half ago?

Whatever we can do to keep illegals out and to deport illegals already here should have been done many yesterdays ago.

Some of the most trustwothy...
...and solid folks I have known in my life have been crusty characters who had a problem w/bad language. I don't hold McCains verbal gaff against him. I made up my mind long ago that I could not trust or support McCain. However, if he gets nominated I'll probably have to vote for him. The primaries are going to be so very important in this upcoming election. Thats where we separate the wheat from the chaf. Every Repub voter needs to show up on Primary day. As for McCains contempt for the GOP base. Thats nothing different from the present administration. I have some opinion pieces on my blog about this phenomena. Check 'em out if you have time DD

Geneva Convention
My husband was in the Vietanum War, we have been married about 18 years. At the beginning for about the first 8 years of marriage I saw some flashbacks of the war, as he cussed the government for lying to the public,as he said while they were reporting the news here casulities were few he said he was stepping over dead bodies of Americans by the hundreds and one particular nightmare where he had his buddies head and was looking for his body. He has only been able to sleep in a bed for about 3 years. The horrors of war are something every president should check and double check before leading us to war. Enough said about that, McCain when you buckled to Bush and helped rubber stamp him on the Genevia Convention I dare say you have lost any vote from any soldier alive from the vietanum war.I have read your book and the horrors you encountered while being a prisoner of war I beleive you know had it not been for the Geneva Concention you might not be alive. As you bucked Bush at first as we heard in the news we were all saying horay. Then the next news was it might hurt your chances for president in 2008, you buckled to Bush. When that news came out my husband went into one nightmare of a flashback. It took almost 2 days to come out of it and was a horrifying thing to watch. As I went downstairs to wake him there was broken glass and things turned over he,d peed all over himself and was bleeding were he cut himself and swinging his fists and fighting with Charlie [the vietanam enemy] saying Charlie I killed you once I,ll kill you again. Now ypu,ve witinessed these horrors in person, how could you buckle to this mentally challanged president we have and his corrupt administration, you have lost our vote. A Concerned Citizen

Candidates for Election
Tom Tancredo would make a very conservative candidate and any man must grow into the Presidency. If he does not do it, then he will be out of office when his term ends. To me, our most important two issues are the war in Iraq and our problem on the U.S.-Mexican border. I believe that both parties should make progress on these two fronts, and when those are done, take on a couple more large issues and defeat them. Put a little on our plate and make sure it is gone before we seek more for the plate.

We need less fussing, fighting and feuding, and work together to get the saving of America foremost in our minds. All our minds!

Now about that candidate McCain? I am not going to make an observation on him, just a quick statement that he will not get my vote. By the way, do any of you remember seeing a picture a few decades back, called "The Manchurian Candidate?" Good picture, I recommend that some of you get hold of a copy and view it!

Frigglesnitz
Continuing from one of your previous posts, i'm curious. why do you find it hard to believe i'm a teacher?

As for the fence, its a stupid expensive eyewash boondoggle. Strict enforcement of existing law is all it takes to solve the illegal alien problem. This would include jail time, like maybe a week, for employers, and internment for arrested aliens. Lest someone make the stupid remark that we can't intern 12 million people, we can't jail all the people who want to kill someone either. When we jail/execute the ones we catch, the number who actually do it goes down. If the punishment is draconian, perpetrators approach the vanishing point.

Tancredo
He doesn't have a snowball's chance, because there is way too much money from the Republican business community that wants the status quo regarding illegal workers, and grass roots fund raising for a presidential candidate is virtually impossible in this country.

You do realize that's why Bush and McCain are illegal worker friendly, don't you? It's all about the Benjamins.

Gently: instead of 'jail time, like maybe a week', how about a $500-100,000 fine PER IMMIGRANT, with the fine being used to deport the illeal & his/her family?

We need to remember that the Constitution does NOT grant citizenship to anyone born here. The 14th Amendment grants citizenship to anyone 'born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof', thus excluding anyone here illegally, or the children of diplomats. Sorry, if little Juan or Chang or Helga is born here, but mommy & daddy are illegals, they're not citizens!

Common sense lost !!
Even though Senator Mccain might not be the man for the job, show me a Republican who is not trying to kiss the boots of the mega-church far right which to the American people is a big mistake weather you believe that or not.We need a moderate politician not tainted by all the good ole boy liberal or far right bible thumpers. We need a Republican with common sence who knows the difference on black and white and the gray areas. We need this Country protected from anybody who wants to do harm to the american people,we need to stop paying out billions to foreign Countries to make deals at the expense of the American people, the American people should come first.
We need a strong Military,we need to take care of our old, disabled, hungry, jobless. We should never sell jobs to anybody that is not an a American, the far right thinks that the only way is pro-life but who is going to feed the extra mouths when we can't feed all the people now, common sense, this Country is spinning in the bowl and if we don't stop Washington Politicians and special intrests we are going to become weak and China,India and the radical islamic terrorists are going to take advantage,so its time the American people need to take our Country back and make it what our fore fathers intended it to be,to lead the world by example and not kiss the back side of anybody period.

Seawolf
You say, "if McCain can win and I believe he can, we need to forget the small stuff and remember who our enemies are", etc.

Small stuff? Almost everything this guy has done identifies him as an enemy. He, along with arch-leftist Russ Feingold, has severely damaged the First Amendment. He does not support thr Second Amendment. He destroyed the opportunity for Republicans to smash the Democrat tactic of filibustering appointees to the Courts, and by doing so probably eliminated the opportunity for a more conservative Supreme Court.

He has not been supportive of stopping the invasion of illegal aliens across the Mexican border in his own state. Did I forget anything?

John McCain is the enemy.

Kevin,
I'm not as disturbed by McCain's "goddamed fence" reference as I am by his apparent inconsistent positions on the best way to defend our country against barbarians who want to kill us. How can one be a Hawk on national defense issues while refusing to defend our own borders? If radical Islamists can use passenger jets to firebomb some major economic and political centers in the U.S.,why can't the sleazy bastards walk across an unprotected border with WMD in tow?

I don't understand
the meaning of cult as it is being presented evidently.

My knowledge of Mormons isn't extensive except that I have worked with them, for them, been their friends and neighbors for 20 years.

Now my 12 year old daughter decided she wanted to be baptized two years ago, since most of her friends at school were Mormon. I neither encouraged nor discouraged this decision, she was baptized, went to church a few times, and occasionally goes to Achievement Days and a few other church activities and is officially on the role.
That means if she ever decides to get married in the temple, I would not be allowed to attend, nor would anyone else without a temple recommend. That's kind of exclusionary and cultish I think.
Since there's no strong family tie to to the church, I doubt that would ever be an issue, but that's pretty slim grounds to brand the LDS church as a cult. Don't you have to be a Catholic to take communion? Is Catholocism a cult? I once attended an Assembly of God service where they were "speaking in tongues," which seemed a lot more cultish to me.

Jerabaub
No-one here is afraid to criticize, it's the pukes who don't understand the difference between criticizing and accusing that get my hackles up.
Dems consistantly whine that they are treated harshly for their "criticism", when it's patently NOT.
I don't criticize John MCcain for his positions, I accuse him of blunt inconsistancy in his rhetoric, followed by a track record of knee-capping his party and the President in the name of "bi-partisanship".
If the fence doesn't get built, MCcain isn't the only one leaving politics.

Primus54
Newt doesn't have a Chinaman's chance (Sorry, Hop Sing) of winning the Presidency using his current strategy. He's going to sit on the sidelines until Labor Day before he makes a move, and then only if no Republican candidate has moved soundly to the forefront. While this may get him the nomination over a weak stable of repub candidates, by then the Hildebeest will have taken the Village, will have stowed over 200 mil for the big push, while lip-biting Bill, with zipper at half-mast, will have charmed a deeply feminized MSM out of its collective panties.

Goodby GOP, it's was nice knowing ya.

B.R.
fines are fine, and should have teeth. A week in jail has additional advantages. Let's say Oprah (no offense, Ms. Winfrey) who makes like 40 mil/year gets caught with an illegal maid and gets sentenced to a week in the slammer. At her salary, thats like a i mil fine. But the publicity and deterrent vaue would be enormous. There are lots of wealthy folks out there not worried about any fine they are likely to be assessed, but the possibility of a week in jail would get their attention. And the CEO of Swift & Co. Do you think they would be hiring illegal aliens by the hundreds if it would cost him a week in jail besides the monetary fine, which costs him nothing? As for deportation, it is useless. The average illegal alien goes home once or twice a year to see the family anyway. Deportation just saves him transportation costs, and he's back here in a couple weeks. Internment in Alaska in tents behind barb wire, building roads with mostly mosquitos for guards would be cheap and so nasty physically and financially that few would risk it, particularly if a strictly controlled program for legal workers was in effect.

McCain
Although I am no John McCain fan, this article is just another attempt, by a media personality, to determine the politics of this country. Since the mid-term elections, it's been interesting to see media personalities, who have national media exposure, align themselves with politicans who are going after the conservative vote. They do this in hopes of reaping the monetary and professional rewards that, too often, go with unethical media politicking.
My quesion is, when will people wake up and realize that they are being manipulated by those who believe their audience too uninformed and ignorant to realize they've (media) been doing and turn against these self-serving manipulators? Otherwise, it will remaim business as usual, with the only winners being those who do the manipulating.

Wake Me Up
When McCain is a Southern governor.

Proud American
Umm...America feeds the world, we have no starving children in this country who aren't victims of neglect, in fact, the biggest problem currently facing the poor is obesity.

Taking from context
Kevin McCullough does not state his belief that Mormonism is "scary, strange, and apostate." He states, "Romney is right on the issues, yet his own faith of Mormonism is scary, strange, and apostate to the same block of voters (faith-based conservative Christians) that McCain and Guiliani have also spurned.

There are many voters in that block who do not feel that Mormonism is "scary, strange, and apostate." From my experience of having an LDS teammate in high school, to several in my platoon in the Corps at the Reservoir in 1950, to having several through the years on my teams, to my present day neighbor, who has performed surgery on me, I can state without reservation that they love my Savior as much as any of my fellow Catholics. Or my Methodist, A.M.E.,Southern Baptist, or Lutheran friends. Or my friends of any religion.

I can also state that growing up an orphan I received as much Christian love and charity from my Jewish friends and their families as from any Christian.

Perhaps Mr. McCullough is in our block of faith-based conservatives. From this article it is impossible to know his true feelings regarding LDS members. It seems he is correct in his assessment that even in this "enlightened" time in our history, he has no more chance of gaining the nomination, let alone being elected, than did his father, George.

Airgun
You need to take that even further. If, as Bush says, we need "guest" workers to take the jobs Americans can't or won't do, then there should be zero unemployment in this country and zero welfare of any kind to any American who can't or won't work.

We all hear the horror stories of anchor babies, who allow entire tribes of illegals to stay in this country, but where is the protest against single unwed American mothers on welfare who continue to have babies and swell the welfare rolls?

I say unless you can't walk or talk, the government doesn't give you a dime unless you have a job. The problem is that employers love hard-working Mexican illegals as opposed to lazy, welfare dependent Americans that the Great Society has created. Maybe if we take away their food stamps, housing and medical benefits, we can actually find the lost work ethic that used to be the strength of this nation.

Geneva convention
I too am a Vietnam veteran and I completely disagree with McCain’s and my own Senator’s (Lindsey Graham) position on how the “unlawful combatants should be treated. When McCain finally “knuckled under” I think he was probably seeing feedback from the base. As to the Geneva conventions, the only country with which we have ever been at war that made even a fig leaf show of following them was Germany. The Geneva convention had absolutely no effect on the NVA or the VC and they certainly have no effect on terrorists who behead people. As far as I am concerned the people at Guantanamo should be shot after we get all the info out of them that is possible. The only real effort that should be made in their behalf is assuring that they are, in fact, terrorists.
All that being said, I will still never vote for McCain.

The media calls McCain a "maverick" ...
... I call him a nutcase. All ego and no principles.

No way am I voting for the "Manchurian Candidate" in 2008.

Money was appropriated for that fence. It may not deter all illegals; it may not deter most illegals; but it will deter some illegals."

I was just at the Zoo. They have fences that have an electric wire that shocks the animals when they touch it.

The animals don't go near the fence.

Of course the same Dem-dimbulbs who whine that we don't have water in the desert for our unwelcome guests will undoubtedly hollar over an elecrtified border fence.

But all of the important issues have one thing in common: the thing that prevents us from carrying out the most effective solutions for anything from Border Secutity to the War in Iraq, is our fear of the Whining Weenies.

And what does this have to do with McCain?

He is one of the Whining Weenies.

Oh yes, and if fences aren't effective, then why didn't he escape from the Hanoi Hilton?

McCain isn't worth dog squeeze
Johnny boy, shouldn't look towards the White House, he should more aptly look in just holding his Senatorial seat, because anyone with common sense knows the Republican purge is not over yet.

Hillary, McCain, Obama, Giuliani,... it just doesn't matter. They will end up doing the same thing by breaking different promises. They are bought and paid for by the same money. It's all about money. IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY!! Sometimes things really are that obvious.

I didn't get the impression that Mr. McCullough was calling Romney's faith "scary" but that he was saying that it was scary " TO THE SAME BLOCK OF VOTERS that McCain and Guiliani have also spurned" which may or may not be true.

Additionally, McCain's comment concerning the fence would be appropriate if he truly feels that it is the least effective means of border control and his agreeing to build it would be consistent with his understanding that the electorate, rightly or wrongly, determines policy. I see nothing wrong with the statement as such.

I will never vote for McCain, NEVER!
If you ask me, McCain is Bush-lite.

He doesn't care if 150 million Mexicans enter the country illegally (which is what IS going to happen).

He will give ALL 150 million benefits (just like Bush wants to do) just because they made it here (illegally).

He talks tough on terrorism, except, oops, you can't yell loudly at a terrorist because you may scare him...and that would be against his rights.

He won't get rid of the IRS. He won't rework social security...he'll expand it to cover all of Mexico.

No way I will vote for McCain...and you would be crazy to vote for him too.

Personally, I am glad that McCain made such a rude comment, insulting the very people he would hope to vote for him in the primary.

It shows his true colors and removes all doubts that he does not deserve to be President.

I might consider him for Dog-Catcher, because it doesn't involve National Security, and besides I don't like to see stray dogs Water Boarded.

Stop The Rhetoric: McCain Has Virtues
Kevin McCullough begins his column with the question "Why does John McCain hate the GOP?" That is a completely false start. John McCain does not hate the GOP. Quite to the contrary, among many things, John McCain was one of the hardest campaigners out there for the GOP this last Fall campaigning for GOP candidates in 2006 elections. That Kevin McCullogh begins his column on John McCain the way McCullough does and continues in the column with the use of a lot of adjectives against John McCain reflects the wholly excessive rhetoric concerning John McCain that is too often seen from some conservatives; and I think that it is high time to stop that excessive rhetoric. It is not warranted.

John McCain's overall voting record shows him to be a conservative. John McCain is a fiscal conservative. John McCain is a defense and national security hawk. John McCain, the son and grandson of U.S. Navy Admirals, knows the military and has its respect. John McCain is pro-life. John McCain is a patriot from a family of patriots; his own war story in Vietnam as a Navy pilot and then P.O.W. demands respect. John McCain's books on courage and character are excellent. John McCain has voted for and pledged to appoint conservative judges.

Campaign finance reform? I think that he went down that road with good intentions, wanting to reduce the influence of money on politics. When your family's focus has been on military service to the country, a desire to cut back the power of money is understandable. Of course, we know that campaign finance reform laws have had undesirable consequences and do infringe upon First Amendment freedoms. Sure, I would like to see John McCain back off of campaign finance reform. My own view is that the future of campaign finance reform laws will be in the hands of the courts. Good judicial decisions are what is really needed on this subject.

Immigration? John McCain has essentially the same mind set as President Bush. Both are from states bordering on Mexico. Both think that steps other than border security alone are more important in dealing with the issue of immigration.

"Gang of 14?" By the compromise that was worked out, John Roberts and Sam Alito have been elevated to the U.S. Supreme Court (with John McCain voting for their confirmations). Do we really know that the nuclear option as to judicial nominees would have worked? Would Bill Frist kept the likes of Lincoln Chafee and Olympia Snowe in line? And with Democrats now in power in Congress, might preservation of minority filibuster rights work to GOP benefit at some point?

In short, you can respectfully disagree with John McCain on certain issues, but overall his record and positions do not justify the kind of rhetoric used by McCullough -- far, far from it.

It is important for the country for the GOP to retain the White House in the 2008 election. Let's use some better sense that what is reflected in Kevin McCullough's latest column.

et al
First, I do not understand how McCain is supposed to be the front runner, when every 99.+ percent of every blog post and comment from the GOP base reveals how deeply despised the man is. He's perhaps almost as hated as much as he hates.

Second, anyone who is scared of Mormons should be asked if he's terrified of Ken Jennings, or if he wakes up from nightmares, screaming that Donny and Marie are trying to get him. They are all LDS.

Phil Byler- Campaigning or Shilling?
The amount of time that Mr. McCain spent on Dinosaur TV, bashing Republicans more than cancelled any campaigning he did.

Just reveals his character, which was so aptly described by Donald, above Phil Byler's post.

Pitbull :)
Haven't seen you at my blog in awhile...

ghh- go, Mr. Mitt!
I wish that people would forget that Romney is a Mormon.

Don't you think his values are closer to yours than some CINO (Christian in name only)? These slimy politicians carry their brand-new Bibles to church for show, and never crack them open. Besides, they all go to what I call "good hands" churches, were the feel-good, meatless sermon has nothing to do with scripture. After all, sitting in a garage does not make you a car. Sitting in a fake church probably keeps you from being a Christian.

Please vote based on his positions and his values, not based on the LDS Church, whose members I have more in common with than the Methodists, Angelcans or the Presbyterians who have allowed the Left to infect their doctrine.

Why John McCain is Finished
I have read many of the postings, and I agree with most opinions regarding John McCain. As was said in one posting "McCain is for McCain." Another pointed out the truth concerning campaign donations--Bush and McCain are for the "Benjamins"--the big lobbyists with money.
Regarding the Current Law concerning traitorous American employers of illegal aliens, none of the postings have even given a hint that their authors are aware of Title 8, U.S. Code. I invite you to go to Google or any other credible search engine and look up U.S. Code, Title 8. You will find that Law imposes a penalty of $2,000 on American employers for every illegal alien hired. Repeat offenders are subject to bigger fines and jail terms. Furthermore, anyone who harbors, transports, aids, and abets importing illegal aliens are subject to having their property confiscated by the Government. Are the Congress, President Bush, and the Department Homeland Security enforcing this law? The answer is a resounding NO! Yet, it their sworn duty to support existing Law, i.e., Title 8, U.S. Code, until it is repealed. Folks, we don't need any additional laws. Our elected officials and our Government Agencies just need to enforce the laws already on the books! If they did that, we would see the downward attrition of illegal aliens through enforcement of current laws.

Just Say No
To John McCain. No way, no how, no thanks. I will vote no in the Iowa caucus and the Iowa primary (as if the primary matters). I will actively campaign against him at the caucus. This man is poison and is in it for himself. He does not have any concern for our country in his desire to become president. So far all the candidates are egotistical and narcissistic, even Romney. No thanks.

There is a good answer to your question...the LIBRERAL media supports McCain. He is practically a liberal...thus, they will encourage his campaign. I guarantee that the numbers on any conservative will be lower because they will make it so.

What does he stand for?
Republicans are supposed to be defined by issues, ie. limited govt., reduced spending, lower taxes, strong military, etc. What does McCain stand for? Having a reputation for being a "maverick" is fine when attempting to hold your party's feet to the fire to its core beliefs, but when you consistently sound like your opposition on "core" issues, how can you expect the members of that party to support you...because you were a Viet Nam vet? I admire his survival instincts and am grateful for his military service. Despite that, McCain does not fulfill the requirements for getting the nomination of his stated party, if for no other reason than he doesn't agree with them.

Mountain Rose
Nah. I still don't see anything wrong with the statement. Absent the blasphemy, of course.

However, upon further reflection, considering who the ire and frustration is directed at *IS* revealing, isn't it?

The only childish you remind me of is Baby Huey, a cartoon character of the 50's. Huey's mother barely came to his knee, while he was still in diapers. Huey stooged around in his innocent way and foiled bank robbers, car thieves and so forth. I thought he was cool.

The sad thing is
If John McCain decided to run as a Democrat, he would probably be our next president.

Mountain Rose: Keep your God
And I will keep my gods.

There hasn't been a president since Herbert Hoover who took Christ's words seriously. Why on earth would one swear on a Bible if one was a Christian? What did Jesus say about that?

Since I am not a Christian, I am free to make whatever oaths I want. And I have a special relationship with Odin, Thorr, and Ullr (who I read National Guardsmen in Colorado resorted to sacrificing effigies to after the snowstorm).

Bipsy Quee- Blasphemy is not great

And I am for laws that protect Border Guards against frivelous procecution for shooting a drug runner in the patootie!

If he wanted my vote, he would have come out for every measure that protects our boarders. Individually they may not be so effective, but if we did them all, we may have some success.

But that comment shows how blase he is about the invasion from the south.

He probably lives behind a gated community and has a chauffer, so he can be reading the papers when his limo goes through the Barrio, so he can play "out of sight, out of mind."

einhverfr - Hmmmmmmmm
I don't recall talking about swearing on the Bible. You must be looking for Dennis Prager's column.

I think we were talking about John McCain's swearing, as in CURSING, when he took th Lord's name in vain.

If you want to see my comments about swearing on the Bible, go look up Dennis Prager's column in the archives.

Mountain Rose:
I have yet to meet a preacher who place later Apostolic traditions above the Bible as a divine source.

For example, Apostolic Christianity suggests that Christ released Christians from the Law, but Christ's own words contradict that. He clearly saw himself as fulfilling the law, i.e. instructing people how to lead lives within the confines of Levitican law.

Further evidence for this reading is found in the passages where Paul condemns homosexuality. Rather than referring to what Christ actually said about heterosexual marriage being a divine law (in answers to questions about divorce), Paul returns to Leviticus for support. Rather than using established Greek terms for homosexuality, he chooses to use a term previously unknown which might translate as "man-layers" referring clearly back to Leviticus as an authority. So Paul saw Levitican law as still applicable.

Finally, why is it that the first thing that our supposedly devout Christian Congressmen do in office? They take a photo op as an opportunity to violate what Christ instructed, i.e. take an oath on the Bible. Christ was very clear that oaths were not to be taken.

So having said this, who are you to judge? Except to say that Jefferson was perhaps pretty much spot on about mainstream Christianity having "no redeeming value."

gently99: CATCH & CARRY -- ILLEGALS

That's pretty much my motto: catch 'em and send 'em back.

As for my surprise at your being a teacher, it related to English composition, punctuation, spelling, etc. I did not copy your comment, so I have no details before me. It was just an observation.

The fault lies in my having worked as a legal secretary for 40 years. Lawyers are known for writing abilities. It's a little-known fact that there are some old battle-axe secretaries out there who help or have helped them along in that pursuit. My bio states it best.

I was known as Hawkeye. Mistakes -- others' mistakes -- jumped off the page at me. My own mistakes lay sleeping like hibernating bears. And there's the rub. Nobody's perfect.

To Ralph; To All: Commander In Chief?
Ralph: the unwarranted rhetoric has obscured what McCain does clearly stand for and how he has voted. McCain does stand for a strong military; he has been a defense and national security hawk; and while you can criticize McCain about support of campaign finance reform laws, he can fulfill the role of Commander in Chief. McCain does stand for reduced spending; he has been one of the most active people in Congress against pork barrel spending. McCain's voting record is a conservative one.

To All: let me make this one personal. My older son is US Army Lieutenant (with officer "blue cord" and "Ranger tab") serving In Iraq. My younger son upon graduation will be commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Marines, having graduated from both junior and senior phases of OCS at Quantico. I am focused on who can be a good Commander in Chief. I can easily see John McCain as the Commander in Chief. All of you who must wish for Hillary Clinton to be elected President are, in my view, totally nuts.

Mountain Rose
My point was that nobody in Congress takes Christ's words seriously. Go back and read Matthew 5:33 if you don't remember this bit.

James 5:12 also addresses this bit.

For this reason, Herbert Hoover refused to take the oath of office and instead merely affirmed his responsibilities.

To einverfr
John McCain could not run as a Democrat. As much as it may seem that he gets along with media people who are Democrats and maintains a cordial relationship with Democrats in Congress, McCain is a pro-military, defense hawk and fiscal conservative who has no place in the cut-and-run and tax-and-spend Democrat Party and could not get the Democrat Party's nomination. Let's also not omit to consider the fact that John McCain spent more hours campaigning for Republicans this last Fall than most anyone.

McCain a Vietnam vet?
Wasn't he shot down on his first mission? Then he spent the whole war in prison in N. Vietnam. That was difficult and humiliating, for sure.

He probably was shot down through no fault of his own, just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And I pity him for his experience. It was horrific, but it wasn't "military" in the sense that it made him an experinced, tough, respected leader.

The merit of a war vet is in his experience as a leader and a follower, day after day facing death with resolve and courage while killing the enemy. He has developed successful strategies and managed men and materiel to achieve goals.

Instead, what McCain learned was how to survive as a caged animal. To obey and not give offense. To fear and respect people possessing absolute power over him.

Pityful. Be we shouldn't be picking leaders based on pity.

einhverfr - there are two different
definitions of swearing.

Taking an oath is not the same as cursing, though some refuse to take an oath because they confuse the two.

Leaders are generally not people of the finest character. I am sorry for that, and wish it were not so.

But when a man blatently stabbs the base of his party in the back over and over, he has gone too far and deserves to be shown the door.

Live Free or Die
"McCain a Vietnam vet?"
*****************************

Thank you.

You have stated what everyone is afraid of saying.

How can languishing in prison make you a War Hero? But everyone is too afraid of looking like meanies to point theis out.

Besides, look at Eisenhower. He was a real war hero, yet everyone calls him a "do-nothing President."

Mountain Rose
The New Testiment is clear that oaths and swearing are not permitted, while the 10 Commendments covers cursing with divine names (words like s#$t and f$%k are not covered by the Bible, nor would a strict reading prevent the Quebequois cursing phrases/words such as "Tabernak!").

Christ is crystal clear that one should always say what one means (let your yes be yes and your no be no) and not use oaths to separate them out.

Mountain Rose: Who to snub
In a parliametary democracy you would be right about snubbing one's party. The only people that McCain needs to worry about snubbing are his constituents. After all, we elect senators as individuals based on state.

McCain, like him or not, has over 80% approval rates in his district.

MaCain is a buffoon
He might be able to run for the White House as a democrat but he can forget about it as a repub. This guy is disgraceful in his bending over for illegal invaders from Mexico. Now he wants to hand over Social Security dollars to these criminals. When are the people of Arizona going to get a clue and send this traitor into retirement?

America feeds the world (airqun)
been to West Virgina or maybe some of the small towns in the south, they are hungry and did not see many fat ones-but I agree with giving all the welfare all of the jobs that most lazy Americans are above, maybe they can teach there children that hard work was what this Country was all about once a long time ago and maybe they can build the wall across the border(to hell with a fence)my dog can get under a fence. Our Govorment is the problem and have taught a generation of Americans how to be fat and lazy and to expect the Govorment to do it when we should be self relient, once apon a time 50 yrs ago we could build everything no matter the race ,sex or Religion and worked together with American pride now we are a service oriented let somebody else do it Country. We have three political parties that have failed the Republicans,Democrats,The press, erase the board and start over and do it right this time for the future of the best idea that Country has had freedom, justice, for the people by the people and on and on,lets not let America become a third world Country.

Live by the Pop Media...
I have always said McCain as a national party figure and Presidential hopeful, is a media prostitute & a pop media creation. They encouraged him with puff publicity whenever he attacked Repubs, opposed Bush, or championed one of their causes such as the shut-everybody-up-except-"news organizations"-during elections act. Whenever he stood with Republicans or conservatives (unless, as recently, it was a strategy to repair his own poor image as a candidate) he was ignored and disdained. When he conceded the 2000 nomination to GWB, the pop media nearly stopped covering him, at least until the next session of Congress after the election.

I still believe that if he were nominated in 2008, he could be in for a nasty surprise. The media will run after Obama or Hillary with puckered lips, and start asking McCain tough Q's about stuff they never considered newsworthy before, like the Keating 5 scandal, or even criticisms of "McCain-Feingold."

However, I will qualify the foregoing in that it could turn out McCain might be THEIR pragmatic best choice for actually getting someone they like elected in '08, who will mostly do what they like and almost never do what they don't like. Meanwhile, Obama can be getting built up for a gig as Willie Clinton II (or 2.0) for 2012! If that project goes well, Pres. McCain will start noticing an increased media interest in the Keating 5, or scrutiny and questions and unfocused editorial carping about almost any decision he makes. After one term, McCain might get his nasty shock, the pop media & Left's "Dear John" letter!

Mountain Rose--Eisenhower
According to wickipedia, "As a Republican, he was elected the 34th President of the United States (1953–1961), serving for two terms. As President he ended the Korean War, kept up the pressure on the Soviet Union during the Cold War, re-orientated the defense budget toward nuclear weapons, launched the space race, enlarged the Social Security program, and began building the Interstate Highway System."

The media labeled him a do-nothing-president because he didn't want to do what they wanted. Their favorite photo-op was him swinging a golf club, trying to imbed a do-nothing image into the public's mind.

I didn't know that about the SS system. Not sure that was good or bad. Intersting too that Kennedy became viewed as the "father" of the US space program instead of Dwight.

Where to begin?
First, I know that many Evangelical and fundamentalist Christians express bias toward other religions. Mormonism and Catholicism are two prime examples. I think that bias is unfortunate, and gives ammunition to those who paint ALL Christians as bigots.

So Romney is a Morman. What do people think he will do as President because he is a Morman that will negatively impact on the nation? I am wary of him because of his previous liberal positions.

One poster has stated that McCain is a strong supporter of the military. That is good. What I can't see is how that balances all of the negatives he represents.

I think he is too egotistcal and short tempered to be in the Oval Office, except as a visitor. He is notorious for his short temper. That makes me uneasy, when he would, as President, have his finger on the red button.

Destroying the First and Second Amendments do not recommend him. Destroying American national sovreignty by promoting amnesty for illegal aliens, and on top of that, wanting to grant them all Social Security, would have a catastrophic effect on that system.

Contemptuously dismissing the fence offers further insight into his disregard for national security on our Southern borders. No matter how much he claims that he supports our military, it is insane for him to nullify their sacrifice by allowing the enemy to come into America behind their backs.

I fully understand posters who warn that not supporting a McCain, Juliani, or even a Romney, for whatever reason, will assure the election of Hillary, or some other Democrat. That does bother me greatly. I have only one answer.

I know that voting for McCain or Guliani is not something I can do. I never want to have to look into the mirror and realize that my vote helped elect a politician who has done irreperable harm to this country. Not when I knew that they were no good.

If Hillary is in the White House I will really feel terrible. Nevertheless, I will also remember that the leaders of the Republican Party have a respomsibility to present a choice to its conservative voters that they will be able to support. So far they haven't done that.

McCain v. Gingrich
Re: McCain's service, I think it is certainly laudable, but doesn't make him infallible nor does it earn him a free pass forever (see Murtha, John).
So he does get credit for opposing pork barrel spending and for supporting a strong military. Otherwise, it seems that Skip pretty well nailed him in his 11:51 AM post.

Republican power in a RINO is not Repubican power, at least not conservaticve power, so the election of a RINO like Mccain is simply Rep voters fooling themselves. Also, the MSM will have supported McCain because his nomination creates a win-win for them....Dem or GOP (Hillary or McCain), we get a liberal Prez.

Re Newt Gingrich, there is a possibility that he might bring some new ideas to the race, and I would like to see that happen.

Our present approach to problem solving in this country (by both parties) seems to be: Problems? Throw money at 'em. Still not fixed? Well, throw EVEN MORE money at 'em!

Newt's Contract with America offered a different approach, and it is possible that he has more to offer. Was it totally successful? No, but it represented a different view...a fresh approach. Newt, too, has his warts and I agree that there is something of a "bull in the chinashop" feeling when he approaches foreign policy, but it ain't like we're doing so hot there anyway. I do think that the US would be more respected, and, yes, even more feared.
You decide if that is a good thing or not.
And, I have to think that a Gingrich/Watts ticket would be an interesting one for the Dems to have to handle.

P.S. Phil Byler, thanks to your sons (and you) for their service. Godspeed.

Choices
If the republicans put up a liberal in the presidential race, the office will belong to the democrat, even if that is Hillary. We seem not to be afraid to save our vote for another day. Here in Massachusetts many of us were disgusted hearing from the republicans running for govenor. So, now we have Deval Patrick and we'll suffer again before we wake up again. Memories are short, unfortunately.

This Republican is NOT in his corner
During the recent election, I contributed to a Senate candidate for the first time (and I'm 58): Steve Laffey in Rhode Island, who was running against Lincoln Chaffee. Unfortunately, he lost. But what makes this especially interesting is that I don't live in Rhode Island.

When I got an email from Senator Dole soliciting money for the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee, I told them I would consider it only if she could guarantee that no money would go to support Chaffee. She didn't respond, and I didn't contribute.

I feel almost exactly the same about John McCain as I did about Lincoln Chaffee.

I agree with you in essence. However, religions are social phenomena, therefore fit under social principles. Also, the biggest benefit of having a frontier is to provide an environment in which people can learn what works and what doesn't in terms of creating organizations that can survive whatever that environment throws at them.

It's my personal belief that those economic, social and political values espoused by folks like Jesus, Adam Smith, Ludwig von Mises, the founders of this country, and so on, are more likely to be successful in the long run than are those economic, social, and political values espoused by the likes of Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Hitler, and their many followers in deed if not name.

But since those who follow the Totalitarian impulse are very unlikely to set aside their need for control, far be it from me to tell them their ideas will fail. I don't know that. The experiment that is humanity hasn't fully run its course yet.

Better just to encourage everyone to stop chewing old soup and look up. Out there in the Solar System (to say nothing of the rest of the universe) there is plenty of elbow room, far more resources than any one person could possibly use, and all for the cost of access, which is beginning to drop rapidly as companies like Scaled Composites and Virgin Galactic prove, yet again, that private enterprise always does things better than government when given half a chance.

Hope this answers your question.

Ad Astra per Levitas Nostra!
(To the Stars through our own High Spirits!)

What did he say?
I would like to have gotten to posting on this topic earlier, but I found it necessary to attend to duties in other areas where I found the conversation less likely to evoke my baser emotions.

I happened upon a post by Hugh Hewitt which linked to a conversation with JM, and Bill Bennett. Unless I missed something, BB gave JM a pass when JM spent considerable time on the "out of context" theory without even mentioning the so-called irreverent comment.

It is certainly JM's prerogative to make it clear that he is not intimidated by God, but he should at least be willing to admit he made the remark as it was indicated by Vanity Fair. It is even more alarming that BB did not attempt to challenge him further.

Mountain Rose
I am not sure of the facts but I seem to remember somebody familiar with McCain's service and they said that if it wasn't for his retired admiral father he would have washed out of flight school long before getting his wings. Perhaps someone with research experience would check this out for fact/fiction.

McCain
John McCain has consistently demonstrated why many cannot vote for him. The McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act may be the worst piece of legislation ever. It restricts speech at precisely the times free speech is most necessary. Pelosi's plans will also call for additional restrictions on speech by attacking small groups who organize to fax petition their congress. No matter which side of the aisle you are on, restricting speech is just plain wrong. And creating obnoxious rules & reporting requirements is a form of free speech restriction. Look for this in the newly proposed "ethics reform plans." Seems the only ethics politicians are interested in restricting, are those that affect the average person.
McCain has numerous other failures that make him less Republican, and less acceptable as President, than the few mentioned here. America needs a uniter, and we need a president who does not hold ANY of the public in contempt. McCain's comments on the fence, show he is once again making promises he does not intend to keep, once he has what he wants.
Personally, I'll vote for Duncan Hunter if he can last out the primaries. At least he stands by his positions as opposed to so many others.

Where will it stoop?
12 Million illegals have invaded our country and no one in power seems to care.
12 Million illegals have come here and one of the first things they purchase is a firearm and no one seems to care.
12 Million illegals have come here and are stealing the blue collar jobs from Americans (jobs no American will do because they drive wages down so low an American cannot make mortgate payments, insurance payments, feed and clothe a family and pay for schooling etc.) and no one seems to care.
12 Million illegals are here, living in the population and they are mostly all unvaccinated against the myriad of diseases the United States eradicated in the last century. And no one in power seems to care.

and furthermore
And not only did his campaign finance bill have unintedned consequences but he is also trying to hold internet service providers responsible for content in an attempt to get a handle on controlling child pornography on the internet, and not having learned from the campaign finance experience, the unintended consequence of that will be to close down the internet, to close down blogs because it is extrememly difficult for a service provider to be in control of everything that is said on a blog, and to carry it even further, it could be applied to make bookshop owners responsible for any speech in any book they sell, which makes John McCain the all time biggest anti first amendement guy that ever ran, plus showing that he doesn't anticipate and he doesn't learn. After saying that, he does seem to be a good guy, but intentions are not everything.

Buck
When immigration is illegal, only illegals will immigrate.

This is why the guest worker program is so important-- we need to gain control over who is crossing our borders and take money out of the hands of the drug cartels that smuggle them.

Our immigration laws are screwed up because they create a huge market for illegal immigrants. This does nothing except make money for the Mexican drug lords, who now operate with military-grade weaponds and technologies.

Come to think of it, let's oppose the guest worker program. The human and drug smugglers work really hard to amass the fortunes they do and the whiny no-nothings who want better enfocement (i.e. higher fees for smuggling) are really the drug dealers' best friends :-)

John McCain
The one thing to get me actively involved in a campaign again would be the candidacy for John McCain. I would have to throw my support to any Other GUY , McCain as President would be a disaster!! I cannot stand the phoney...no wonder he and Kerry are such fast friends...both as phoney as 3 dollar bills!

Vote McCain or stay home.....
hosekuervo says many will vote for McCain as the alternative to Hillary because she is Hillary.

raidencraig says NO.

I would admit that I did not vote for my own Rep last November because I will no longer be taken as a stooge. As long as both major parties speed and spend us down the garden path to the end of the core of the United States political heart, as it was once established, I'll opt out.

Until a major party loses there are never any changes in it's direction. No need for change as they think they have a proven formula. Look at how the Dems have rewritten their playbook to get over the last election!

Now I did not support the Dems last election either, nor do I believe they will do anything differently in the long run. They only have to convince the general population that they are doing something to win again next time.

It was the Repub's who convinced me they were doing plenty of things for the last 12 years. Like expanding government, spending, welfare, corporate welfare and worst of all, not getting anything done!

Where was the tax code reforms? Stopping the illegal aliens invading? Social Security and Medicare fixes? Tort reform to cut medical expenses? Energy independance by increasing domestic production? They couldn't even get the nasty baloney weight-loss industry ads off the public airwaves!

All I remember now is two supreme court judges got done without much of a fight and a few very temporary tax cuts. That's it for twelve years. THAT is why I stayed home. Both sides became one side, and my side (the American public) was still losing.

re John L's comments
Gingrich is smart but he's a jerk. He also has a short fuse. A good president would use him as an advisor. I don't think I would want him to have his finger on the button.

Romney made negative comments about the ACLU and that is a plus both on his courage and his judgment.

If between John McCain and...

Hillary, then I have to go with John. Rats!

Obama, Again, I have to go with John. Double rats!

Why is my choice for Commander in Chief always between the lesser of two weevils?

Frigglesnitz
We all have to deal with cognitive dissonance -- a reluctance to recognize our own mistakes. As for mine, i must resort to the lazy man's bailout, namely, i have a lackadaisical attitude. I try( and fail) to correct my spelling, but i don't use a spell checker or look anything up. Clumsy composition has to get pretty bad before i go back and correct run on or lack of clarity. Takes too much time. My small i's are a lazy idiosyncracy. Actually, the level of literacy is quite high here. Some exceptions of course.
By the way, you did catch i was a retired engineer, playing around with a second career, which probably also explains sloppy English.

Marc of Ca
Posts like your and some others indicate the Reagan majority is still out there, just not voting for turncoat idiots even with R after their name. It would be nice if some people picking candidates for the R's would show the same political savvy Schumer did by picking conservative condidates for the D's. Until you have that majority, you have no power. As much as Chaffee was a pain in the rear, he was probably as far right as a person could go and be elected in RI.

Watts who?
No one has heard of Watts out here in the west. I wouldn't vote for someone who was in favor of affirmative action. That is like saying that African Americans are inferior and it like saying that a child of Oprah, or of Tiger, or of Bill Cosby, need a break getting into college as versus a white kid from a West Virginia coal mine town, and it also means not letting Asian kids get in to places where they worked to get to.
I don't know Guiliani well enough.
Any chance Lieberman would run? He has stood up for principles when all others haven't, and he recognizes the Islamist threat, and he's not in the pocket of the oil people, like the Gores and the Bushes, and he's not a democrat. He probably has supported Bush more than McCain has.

hoskuervo:
You are entitled to your opinion as to whether conservatives would flock to the polls if it was a choice between McCain and Hillary Clinton. I kind of suspected that would happen at the last election. I was wrong.

At least if the posters on TH were truthful in stating that they did stay home. It is entirely possible that the Democrats are in the majority now because so many conservatives were disgusted with the Republicans in Washington.

I concede that we will be facing a truly horrible dilemma if Hillary Clinton is the alternative to John McCain. I still say that I will not vote for McCain.

At this point it isn't even about McCain and Clinton. It is about being fed up with the whole D#*^*d process. It is about a gut feeling I have that the politicians don't really care what we do. I think that they are playing their own game, and only paying lip service to the American people.

We are a long way down the road to a situation in which it will make absolutely no difference which of these two Parties are in power. Come to think of it we may already be there.

As I said, you are entitled to what you believe, but I you don't know me. I assure you that I will not vote for McCain or Guliani. That is the end of the discussion.

Pasadena Phil writes:

"Sure our guy is bad but...
look at THEIR guy...we can't vote for that..that.. Hitler!!" That's the way it's been since Reagan left the scene. I can't believe we keep buying into it. There is only one thing to do. Re-register as an unaffiliated independent.
======================
so, at least register with the Constitution party even if you vote GOP or dont' vote the power of millions of people leaving the GOP, not for independent since that could be either liberal or conservative, join a party that stands for Constutitonal government.

Again, vote anyway you want but, if you leave the GOP at least do it in a way the really hits them between the eyes and Constitution Party membership from millions might tell the GOP to move right, not left as "independent" does because it usually votes "moderate" to "left" as a group.

einhverfr & Mountain Rose
As regards oaths and "swearing in".

The Constitution of the United States:
Article VI, Clause 3.

That's all you need.

(Man, them founders were smart!)

McCain in 2008
Will result in a democrat in the Whitehouse.

That won't be the worst. Money to the RNC, RNCC, RNSC and other republican committees will take a nosedive.

Losses to winnable house, senatorial, govenorships, etc. races will surely follow.

What do you just think happened in November 2006? Pent-up disatisfaction with RINO's, whimps and enuchs in the republican party.

HE IS OVER---AGE, HEALTH, LIBERAL
SPEAKER NEWT GINGRICH is the MOST qualified man to be PRESIDENT. DEMOCRATS are scarred of him. I hope he runs, then for the first time in many years I will be enthused about a candidate. HE should never have quit as SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE.

Dearth of Leadership
Without a Libertarian stepping up to the plate, I'll go Newt.

He is Conservative.

McCain in South Carolina
Here in South Carolina McCain already has Senator Linsey Graham sewed up. According to the included linked article from the State newspaper he also has all the "big money" sewed up. If ya'll remember back to 2000, it was SC where McCain was knocked out by Bush. That will not happen this time. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Cognitive dissonance -- I love it!

As for the level of literacy "here," I'm assuming you mean Townhall.com bloggers and commenters in general. However, it could just as easily mean yourself; I certainly have no quarrel with you there.

As for my own "second career," it's retirement, thank God. Retirement, and practicing writing on Townhall.com, writing letters to the editor, and letters to the government and other entities.

Retirement has many rewards. Writing is one of them. I'm happiest when stringing words together as a form of communication. Music may be the international language; writing has to be somewhere in that line.

Getting back to fences, electrifying them is an electrifying idea.

The State paper
I meant to also include the warning that this newspaper is about as liberal as the NY Times so take the story accordingly.

Third party choice
Having a choice of a third party would be nice, but it ain't gonna happen. You might as well stay home. A third party would be viable only if some major hitters in the Repub party break away and form a new one. People won't vote for unknowns, no matter how good they sound. They won't contribute the kind of money needed either. Even with seasoned, well known candidates running in the new party, of course the Repubs will simply co-opt their positions just long enough to win reelection. Once defeated the new party would lose credibility and support. Look at Perot. All he achieved, with all his money and publicity was to get Bill Clinton elected. No body wanted to take a chance on that again and he dissappeared from sight.

Not to mention all the barriers to new parties that already exist at the state and federal level. Nope. The Republicrats have it all sewed up.

What ever made you think this was a free country, anyway?

2008 or 2012?

I would like to see Newt run for president with John Cox as his running mate.

That way, if Newt is unacceptable in 2008, Cox would get a great chance to show the American voter who he is and what he stands for. Cox is not well-known and is under funded at the moment.

But, like Reagan, he needs to get before the public so people can hear him express his views and he could be the conservative nominee for 2012.

I know
two things about John McCain:

1. He is as devoid of integrity as Bill Clinton.

2. He is an enemy of the Constitution.

That's all I really need to know.

McCain Can Win?
If they thought that McCain could win the election the Republicans would unanimously endorse him. The same is true for any other candidate including Giuliani, Romney and Gingrich. If they thpught that Fidel Castro could win they would run him too.

This party has betrayed and marginalized the entire limited government wing of the party. The party needs to die and be replaced, it is corrupt beyond redemption.

Republican not necessary.
I hope somebody's party runs a real conservative candidate who I can vote for.

McCain as military leader
I served in the USAF under President
Nixon, President Gerald Ford,
"Carter the Incompetent GI Killer".. PRESIDENT RONALD W. REAGAN, GIANT SLAYER AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF EXTRODINARE; President George Bush Sr. and that low morals dirt bag Clinton. I could have stayed in for 8 more years and earned a much better retirement under Clinton. I chose to put in for early retirement after Clinton humiliated and disgraced my military leaders. I walked over to the Base Personnel Office to put in my paperwork. By the time I returned to my unit there was a group of about 8-10 Senior Enlisted Personnel lined up waiting to congratulate me on my guts and sacrifice for "Voting With My Feet." My early judgement of Clinton was correct [1993]. He only got worse as time went on. I "Red Lined" Clinton's name on my retirement paperwork and put in RONALD W. REAGAN. That got a few laughs. Now you know where I am on politics, military, and morals... I respect McCains military service, but he is in NO WAY qualified to serve as President and Commander in Chief of the United States Military!!! Morals and competence matter! I have been asked more than once to run for political office but declined. I simply don't have the political skills and experience necessary. Isn't it about time that McCain learned about his shortcomings? Old Sarge

Yes to third party
Live Free or Die, Yes a third party choice can now work if all of those reading TH would create the momentum. This is a different time than Perot. We are no longer under the thumb of the MSM. We can either let the MSM shove Shillery down our throats, or we can work together through this media to support our own candidate.

Splaying the First Amendment
It would be hard for me to pull the lever for McCain based, if nothing else, on this evisceration of the First Amendment. Those calling him a "RINO", however, must have a pretty interesting definition of such, since he votes the party line about 80-90% of the time.

As to the cursing, I remember reading something by William F. Buckley a few years ago about how using the term "goddamn" as a modifier was not the same as using it in a blasphemous way -- that to say "it is goddamn cold" is far different than "goddamn your soul to hell".

And Phoenix Lady, your comments about hoping for him to die before the election were truly despicable.

McCain, the best candidate for the Dems!
But you have to admit, when McCain takes a bribe, he takes the Savings & Loan industry down with him (McCain - Keating 5, ring a bell?).

He's a great choice for Republicans if you are a Democrat supporter.

McCain
He may be voting along party lines recently, but those same party lines got a lot of Republicans out of office recently. Morals DO matter. Guts DO matter. Ask the out of office repubs if being a liberal kissing weenie helped them!!

John Cox plus
I looked him up. Yep John Cox is an outsider all right.

I looked up Perdido's reference to the constitution article V1 clause 3 and this is it, just so other people don't have to search:
"The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."
As regards Romney, people liked his father who was Mormon. We went through the whole thing about Kennedy being Catholic. Aren't we over stuff like that? It could prove to be an advantage. Some Islamists say their religion is the real religion because it is the latest among Judaism Christianity and Islam. Well, Mormonism is later than Islam so it steals their thunder on that point.

einhverfr: "Who to Snub"
einhverfr writes: Sunday, January, 07, 2007 4:55 PM
"Mountain Rose: Who to snub
In a parliametary democracy you would be right about snubbing one's party. The only people that McCain needs to worry about snubbing are his constituents. After all, we elect senators as individuals based on state.
McCain, like him or not, has over 80% approval rates in his district."
*******************************

Fine.

And whether or not McCain likes it, I will never vote for him, and as you see, most of the posters here will not vote for him.

MOUNTAIN ROSE MENTIONED RESEARCH
ANOTHER TOPIC THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO IS WHAT HAPPENED DURING McCAIN'S IMPRISONMENT. THE ASSUMPTION SEEMS TO BE THAT HE WAS STARVED AND TORTURED. BUT WAS HE?

REPORTEDLY, HE WAS BADLY INJURED AFTER BAILING OUT OF HIS AIRCRAFT. BUT HE RECOVERED AND THIS MEANS HE HAD TO HAVE HAD GOOD NUTRITION FOR A TIME AND IT ALSO MEANS THAT HE GOT VERY GOOD MEDICAL CARE IN PRISON. PEOPLE WHO ARE SEVERLY DEPRIVED AND SERIOUSLY TORTURED FOR FOUR YEARS GENERALLY ARE NOT HALE AND HEARTY AT 70+ YEARS OLD. GENERALLY THEY ARE DEAD BY THAT AGE OR VERY SICK.

WAS ANY TORTURE CORROBORATED? WAS HIS DEBRIEFING AFTER LEAVING THE PRISON EVER MADE PUBLIC? REPORTEDLY, AT ONE POINT HIS CAPTORS INVITED HIM TO LEAVE AND HE REFUSED. IF SO, WHAT KIND OF PRISON LETS YOU REFUSE ANYTHING INCLUDING LEAVING. THE VIETNAMESE KNEW THAT McCAIN WAS AS CLOSE TO ROYALTY AS WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY. DID HE GET SPECIAL TREATMENT? IF SO, HOW SPECIAL?

IS THERE AN UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY OF McCAIN OUT YET? THESE QUESTIONS ARE GOING TO BE ASKED AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL THERE ARE ANSWERS.

Perdido
My post was not about the requirements but rather the idea that there are members of our governemnt that follow Christian teaching in its entirity. This was in response to Mountain Rose's concept of judgement of the religious qualifications of individuals.

I am well aware of the option of affirmation. I believe that I already mentioned that Herbert Hoover took that option, perhaps though that might have been in a different conversation.

Phil Byler
I served in the Army during the Viet Nam era and have spent my career of 33 years in a semi-military environment as a Fire Captain. I know leadership when I see it and McCain "ain't" it.

Thanks Gunner
Title 8, U.S. Code.

Most do not take the time to research facts. As many times as I've posted 'links' to same info, they still do not even bother. YES we already have laws ON THE BOOKS to cover what needs to be done. Yet, EVERY elected official - neglects their 'oath of office' to UPHOLD the laws of the land.

In fact, EVERYONE of them could be removed from office because 1)they REFUSE to uphold/enforce the laws AND 2)have broken their "oath of office".

Ralph
FUGGIN "A" SKIPPY!

Good leadership is doing the RIGHT THING and SAYING THE RIGHT THING even when it's not convienant to do so.

McShame is a RINO. A compromiser. Just an older version of The Centrinator Arnold Schwarzenegger-Schriver-Kennedy.

Irony!!!!!
Only in Modern Amerika do we see our elected leaders eagerly supporting the protection of other countries from internal and external enemies. And yet, these same leaders refuse to protect the home land from enemies foreign and domestic.

It is time to flush the political toilet and get change the way this country is governed.

Allen
Did you read ANY of the prior posts????

The information is there for all to read. For anyone who faults faith based groups only, did not read McCains lousy tract record. He is a liberal republican (RINO) and does not represent to 80+% (based on polls) of the voting base. The 'informed' voting base would NEVER vote for him for POTUS.

Dorlmorg-missed the point.
Politics and religion don't mix and watching what has happened over the years should be able to show that.I'm Catholic and don't have a problem with good people doing the right thing but show me anybody in Washington politics where stabing the American people in the back and then going to Church on Sunday is apples and oranges. You can't be a crook all week and on sunday say its all right and then go back and be a crook the next week over and over you see and our fore fathers knew that when they wrote the constitution so why have we not figured out it dose not work.Keep Religion seperate, believe what you want but don't mix the to together because its a oxy-moron.As i said at the first Common Sense is all it takes.

Re: Proud American
Proud American said "As i said at the first Common Sense is all it takes."

Unfortunately, when you mix a lust for power with common sense you get our present mess. We need to clip the wings of our powerful politicians so they cannot do the damage they presently can.

We need a much smaller government, politicians that are not professional or life long and well formed common sense for the people we send to represent us in government.

Deacon
two words. Term limits.

If a GOP'er stepped up to the plate and said that he/she was for term limits, smaller government, and social security reform, they'd be a shoo-in for POTUS!

I know I'd vote for em!

Two words you'll be hearing a lot of:
Mitt Romney.

Far more former governors have been elected president than senators, and for that we can all be greatful. Even virtual no-names, at the time, were able to defeat their opponents (see Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton as two such examples).

The Scary Mormons
I am mormon and it frustrates me how much we are put down. We are Christians and share the same values as other Judo/Christian orgnaizations.

I can not tell you how many times I have know conservatives and shared all the same values and ideas with them. They knew me as a Christian through our conversations about Christ and our values in this world. Down the road they hear the term LDS as being my Church then they freak out and think I kill chickens in the night or something... even though they have known me and shared many conversations about religion. It just shows how ignorant people can be I guess.

The point is valid that being LDS is scary to some people. They have taken in a ton of propoganda and lies about the LDS church. There are many people who seek to advance the lies and persecution. Unfortunatly a lot of these people are so called "conservatives" some of which post here and some of which write articles here such as Mike Adams.

Mitt might be a good man, but I do not know about a lot of his politics yet. His religion should be a non factor but it is a sad day when we have Christians attacking other Christians saying they are not Christian enough (Sunni vs Shitie anyone?).

McCain is a lib just like Bush. We do not need another guy like him in office.

Rudy and Abortion is a deal breaker for me. Abortion is murder, plain and simple. People do not have the right to "choose" murdering their child.

Newt is my personal favorite. However the MSM hates him with a burning passion and he will have a tough time. They will slander and libel him at every turn and constantly spin him as the bad guy. However that is only because he is the BEST guy we have for the job. He is a true conservative with actual ideas! He can speak well in public and convince others of our ideals. Newt is my #1 man for 08 by a long shot but I fear the MSM will doom him from the start.

Re: GunnyG
GunnyG said, "If a GOP'er stepped up to the plate and said that he/she was for term limits, smaller government, and social security reform, they'd be a shoo-in for POTUS!"

Finding a polititcian who would say that may not be hard. Finding a politician that would implement those wonderful goals is the hard part. Until the electorate gets the idea that the present government status quo has to change and they start to throw the rascals over board at each election we will continue to have the sorry representation we currently have.

Finding a politician that...
supports the three things above, and is sincere about them, and recieves enough campaign contributions and media coverage is impossible. That is not how the system works, you aren't supposed to vote for virtuous people, you are supposed to vote against the other schmuck, and as long as the American people support the two major parties that is how it will stay. The oligarchy will remain unthreatened and not feel that change is necessary. To believe otherwise is fantasyland.

Mcdean 1978
I was raised as a Quaker in Central Utah. I have a unique perspective on the Mormon Church because, as my father was a physician in a small town, we were valued enough to be perpetually invited to all the social gatherings and made to feel like an honorary member.

While I am now a Norse Pagan, I value my Quaker upbrining as much as these two religions can appear to be at odds (though IMO, this is more appearance than substance)

Quakers, like Mormons, are at least partly non-Apostolic branches of Christianity, and lack the hieratic succession back to the Catholic Church. For this reason, I think, a lot of other religions look upon Quakers, Mormons, and other groups in the same position, as "weird," "not really CHristians," etc. when at most there is just a different emphasis put on priorities derived from scripture.

The Mormon Church IMO has a number of very positive lessons to teach this country, particularly in maintaining the bonds that hold society together. Certainly no organization is perfect and the Mormon Church has their own social problems, but we shouldn't stop looking for the good in others' religions.

jcdean1978
Gingrich is still my dark horse pick for the nomination, eventhough I don't like him. I think his support for a big brother society aren't conservative at all. The man is a low regulation authoritarian. I hear he and bubba dryhump the ECHELON servers in his free time. But I still think he will win.

As far as the LDS issue. America is not ready for a Mormon President and maybe never will be. Just like the Gingrich thing, its not my personal view, its just that I think the grind of the Presidential campaign and that issue combined is too much to overcome. Once he gets into the forefront they will start bringing up the long johns and other things and it will be too much to overcome.

jcdean1978

Don't Mormons have any faith?

If God wants a Mormon or Newt as president, why aren't you praying for that? God does answer prayers. As for Newt vs. the MSM, God can overcome that as well. Hey, be positive. God is the final "Decider" anyway.

Faith
Oh I have faith that what is supposed to happen will. I also know that we must be active and work to secure that future that we believe is right. We can not just sit back and put God to the test asking him to do it all. We must activly work with God's help to create a better future.

McCain
I WOULD NOT VOTE FOR HIM ON A BET - HE IS JUST LIKE ALL THE LIBERALS. I think he is over the top and that he will crack. He has no love for this country and its people. I know he is a Vietnam war POW but what happened to him during those years. He is not really a stable person. Besides he is too close to the otherside to be trustworthy.

McCain should go away
I know he won't do it, but I sincerely wish that John McCain would just retire and go fishing. He is respected as a person who served along with thousands of others in Vietnam. He was captured and managed to survive that horrible ordeal. However, that doesn't make him presidential material. His views towards illega immigration alone make him a person not worth voting for when it comes to the presidency. He and Bush don't give a hoot about border control when it comes to lawbreaking illegals. They have bird feathers for brains on that issue. McCain will cater to "anyone" he thinks may help get him in the White House. The man has no pride nor shame when it comes to politicking. I guess that just makes him one more "politics as usual" person in Washington.

John McCain: Manchurian Candidate
Extraordiaire. None of the brainwashed Chicom automatons have risen as far as John McCain. Imagine the power Peking would have with him in there (whitehouse). Flash a Queen of Diamonds and make a suggestion, not that they would really have to, John's pretty much quite capapble of destroying America all on his own. On second thought, I dont suppose he could be any worse than Big Bush, Hellray & Bilk Linton, and Little Bush. They all have seemed to take their orders directly from the Chicoms. Stuff enough B1B Immigrants into our sensitive defense plants, and well, it isn't long before some Chinaman or Hindu gives away the store and we are facing stealth bombers, hyper accurate neutron weapons and super quiet boomer subs.

Stop Immigration, deport all foreigners, close the Mexican Border, outlaw Mohammedism and concentrate our Mohammedans & illegal aliens into internment camps while we consider what we will be doing with them. They certainly can't be allowed to run loose in our country, ever again.

Damn the foreign devils and their puppet dupes like Bush and McCain. With them in office we may as well have Vincente Fox and the Ayatollah up there. Oh, yeah, we are fixing to do that with Clinton/Obama....anyway.

Faith

jcdean1978

The type of faith you are describing sounds more along the lines of how a fatalist believes.

One doesn't work to have the future be as he sees it, but how God sees it. If you are led by the Spirit of God, you will be active doing those things that glorify Him.

In the final analysis, EVERYTHING will turn out according to His plan. We are co-workers appointed by Him to carry out what He wants us to do and say.

I have faith that He will lead me daily to do those things that I have been created to do.

McCain and Saddam
I will vote for McCain any day of the week only because he was against the execution of Saddam Hussein, for John to stand up for this guy say's alot in my book. McCain in 08'.

Anyone but McCain
Rudy, sure. Newt, why not. Mitt, great.

Anyone but John McCain.

Anti-Second Amendment
One negative for McCain seems to be missing from the debate. One constant for McCain has been his great passion for gun control. Even Al Gore was smart enough to admit that it was his anti-gun stance which caused him the election in the south, including his own home state of Tennessee.

I am afraid though that McCain will be the GOP nominee due to the influence he has accumulated after spending a hundred years in the Senate. Bob Dole, anyone?

SAD
I may not be the smartest man alive but as I have really watched the election process for the the President or even any other election It has become clear that MONEY rules the day! More amazing is that it seems to have been that way for a lot longer than we want to admit. The other fact seems to be that no matter what once elected the President has no choice in how he is going to do things. Our rights have been bought, sold and sold and bought more times then I care to think. In the end we will have only the rights and things they want us to have: the elected and the MSM will prevaile in the end. And we will be the ones who are to blame!

Raiden Craig: Guest Workers
I know quite a number of guest workers (H1-B holders). The ones I know come from a wide range of places: Canada, China, India, and Peru. WHile they aren't quite the same thing as the farm laborer issue, they may not work always at the location of their original sponsor (half of those I know do), but they are required to pick up another job in their field if they get laid off in order to keep their visas.

The issue is that our current system does nothing except give money to drug lords. My proposal includes:

1) A guest worker program to ensure any labor needs can be met legally.

2) Granting limited amnesty to those who have been working in the US (and paying taxes) for at least five years. These people would be allowed to be sponsored through the system but would not be granted any additional benefits.

3) Granting limited amnesty to those who were here less than five years and are willing to cooperate with US agents in bringing human smugglers to justice. They would be

4) Working with embassies around the world to ensure that when we deport families with US citizen children those children can have transparent citizenship procedures in the countries of their parents (the children would still be able to return by themselves at a later time as US citizens). With very few exceptions, everyone born or naturalized in the US is a US citizen under the 14th Amendment.* And unless amended, the Constitution will continue to make such a requirement.

* THose exceptions include those who enter into the service of a foreign government, and those born with diplomatic immunity, such as the children of ambassadors or foreign ministers. It is also possible to opt out of citizenship. For more details on that process, please read your passport. You do have one, right?

5) Actually prosecute human smugglers ideally with penalties higher than we give to drug smugglers (who are, in reality, mostly the same people).

finished
he is finished because hes a rino,if we wanted a dem we would vote for one so mccain and gulinai can take a hike.

jcdean1978
"Abortion is murder, plain and simple. People do not have the right to "choose" murdering their child."

Anyone who shares this sentiment - and I dont really care what the religious label is - or none - is a friend of mine. Sure, there are "liberal Catholics" who dont share this view. But ultimately, I have FAR more in common with you than my "liberal" immediate breathren. Same goes for evangelical Christians.

And when I see these groups and natural allies taking disrespectful potshots at each other on this or any other forum, it bothers the heck out of me. On top of everything else, it is just plain stupid.

On top of which, should a POLITICIAN have the courage to make the above statement in public, he would never lose my support. Romney seems like someone I could support, but some of his past statements bother me.

In that I'm not quite sure if his present positions on a number of issues are principled or political. This is a serious question, but it is the ONLY one which I consider to be of merit. His Mormonism should be completely IRRELEVANT.

Lydia
Gezzzz.... sounds pretty serious!!!

Who steps in?
If McCain is done, who gets the nomination?

Rudy? Three marriages, two mistresses, gay roommates, gun control, illegals get amnesty, etc., etc.....

Romney? The Evangelicals tolerate a Mormon? Don't bet your last Donny & Marie LP on it.

McCain is all the GOP has right now..... get used to him.

I'd vote for John McCain
and so would my boyfriend. But, we're a gay couple who are also in favor of open borders.

Mitt - utahnotmormon
I'm with utahnotmormon - I'm from Tennessee but have had the previlege of working with many fine people from the LDS world in Utah - they're religous beliefs are different but by goodness they are good conservative people (that no coffee rule troubles me).

I think Kevin was trying to point out that in the South Mitt's religion is very foreign and like Catholics have historically been demonized by more than a few evangelicals (not so much anymore but in the last generation or two-I've set in a few of those pews).

That aside it looks like Mitt is the only conservative choice we have. And a better choice than McCain any day. Besides any Republican with a conservative background that can get elected in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts has to be pretty tough.

Trouble maker
John McCain has never been anything in my eye other than a trouble maker.

That's why the liberal press love him so much.

I'd be tempted to vote for Hillary over him. At least we know where she is coming from.

Personal injury lawyer on a banana peel?
http://www.givemetheinfo.com/blog/blogger.html

McPain = Aaron Burr + Tom Daschle
John McCain is the GOP equivalent of Aaron Burr & Tom Daschle rolled into one. He is a dangerously ambitious politican who runs a very liberal campaign back home to get elected every time.

My question is: Why do the good people of Arizona keep electing a man so viciously opposed to our country's border security?

Anyone?

McCain
Vote for McCain and he will make us proud Americans again, he won't lie about WMD's like the current occupant of the White House.

John McCain
John McCain is one of the very few Republican senators who has supported President Bush. How can it be said that a Republican who supports a Republican President "hates" Republicans?

Furthermore, John McCain is one of the very few senators who has consistently placed principle and the good of the people of this country above partisan politics.

It is truly sad to see so many people villify him by bearing false witness against him.

Wake up, Terry
Is it bearing false witness to say McCain voted for amnesty?!
Is it false to say he voted against Americans' right to free speach with his scandalous 'campaign finance reform' bill?

Wake up!

McCain is THE prototypical RINO.
He symbolizes the ideological quicksand the GOP has gotten itself into!

ROMNEY 2008
Mitt is the only one in the race who has said that amnesty is not the answer. It won't matter in the least whether it is Hillary or McCain that sells us out with amnesty, it won't be our country anymore. The Republicans who are cooperating with this sell out of America are insuring that the Republican party goes the way of the Whig party. I for one will never again vote for anyone who will not uphold the law. I would not have voted for Bush again if I had known about the totalization treaty with Mexico. I'll be looking for someone to run a primary challenge to Sen. "Amnesty John" Warner in 2008. He voted for the Senate amnesty bill last year and lost my vote after having voted for him since I started voting in 1978.

McCain
McCain is one of the few Republicans that is not afraid to take on the Hitler-Cons, he is an honest and open man and thats something the rest of our party needs, Limbaugh and Hannity, Coulter and the rest of Hitlers troup can stick-it with their criticism of McCains voting record, McCain votes with the rest of us and thats just the way I want him to.

Maybe
Maybe my vote would go to McCain because he is the only Rebulican on my straight line party vote ticket but that's the only way.

The more JM says, the less I find him genuine. I will NEVER vote for him unless he is the only republican candidate.

Newt is the one. I preferred the old lion Newt to the recent Mr. Nice Guy Newt, but he should be more electable now. Thus, the reincarnation.

I would love to see he & Pelosi go at it. Harry Reid would have to run to his hole & hide at Newt's approach. Murtha would cut & run from confrontations. Precious!

Politics would be fun again, as opposed to disgusting, as they are now.

RINOs out - Conservatives in. Traitors and law breakers prosecuted w/o plea bargains (gotta make examples!).

Lydia, re "preview"--
Have you ever heard of proofreading?

Campaign Finance Reform
Why does McCullough refer to campaign finance reform as "unconstitutional" when it has been explicitly HELD CONSTITUTIONAL BY THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT?

McCain's Conservatism
I find the question "Why does John McCain hate the GOP" to be absolutely ludicrous.

McCain has been THE staunchest defender of the War on Terror, and has refused to back down in the face of electoral pressure. While other GOP senators are backing off because supporting the war right now is politically unpopular, McCain presses on, reminding us all of the terrifying consequences of a defeat, and the necessity of victory.

Few, if any, Republicans have done more than John McCain to raise money and campaign for other Republican candidates across the country.

Further, McCain has been the only Republican to stand up to and call out the pathetic and unwieldy fiscal liberalism and big-spending, big-government ways of the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress. Our party has lost its way on fiscal conservatism, and McCain is the leading voice admonishing us to return to our principles.

I really feel that all this "RINO" talk is more a result of personal dislike of McCain than anything else. The man is as true a conservative as you will find.

McCain
I have never liked McCain. Does anyone else not see that huge chip on his shoulder? I can't say that it surprises me the language he used. I remember very vividly when he was so rude to Maria Shriver when she tried to talk to him during his campaign in 2000. He did not know that what he was saying was being broadcast at that moment. He basically told he he didn't have time to talk to her, but he was quite nasty in how he said it. This was all after it was clear he was out of the running. He showed his true colors to me in that 20 second spot and that forever made me dislike the guy.

LIAR McCain, not in congress in l980-

VOTE RON PAUL-not the lesser of 2 evils
I refuse to believe that the rank and file of the GOP is supporting this lunatic. Conspiracy theorists may be generally reviled and mocked, but what happens when there is a real conspiracy? Even Fox news has reported on the susceptibility of the new voting machines and ballot counting machines. The machines can be pre-programmed to count every so many votes for the pre-chosen candidate.

There can be no plausible explanation for the McCain wins than fraud at the polling places, when there is almost universal contempt for this pathetic little megalomaniac. We must wake up to the fact that our liberty and our very lives are at stake when we have no more voice in what the Federal Gov't does.

Mitt is the only hope
I guess the GOP mainstream, wants us to think about John Mcain, the way he thinks about border enforcement. "I think Senator Mcain is least effective. But I'll vote for the goddamned Senator they want me to" He is gonna get crusehd in the general, just like his buddy Bob Dole.
Wake up Huckabee supporters you are giving this Rhino the election.
