Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

At the heart of the financial meltdown now bedeviling Americans is a simple and profoundly ignored fact that does not require an advanced degree in economics to understand: Our government spends more than it takes in—a lot more.

Sure, regulators could have done a better job but, in truth, politicians at every level have frustrated attempts to blow the whistle on bad loans, bad reporting and bad ethics. Why? Because politicians have been buying our votes with our money—and our future earnings—for a long time. And they don't want any interference from those they are "helping."

It's not just the naked bribes represented by "earmarks" for hometown voters; it is new entitlement programs like the prescription drug benefit, new rules governing the behavior of favored banks and investment houses and a headlong rush to buy the votes of the poor by guaranteeing home ownership, irrespective of one's financial ability to repay a loan. Lest we forget, let's also add up all the special tax breaks for favored contributors that have bloated income tax code rules to 67,500 pages. It's a bi-partisan betrayal of our future cloaked as concern for the common good.

Although our nation was founded on the principle that the citizen was sovereign, government spending increases and more and more taxes taken from our earnings, savings and investments have effectively transformed the American citizen into a serf working another's land for the privilege of taking a fraction of the fruits of his or her own labor.

Just Trust Us

"Trust us," we are told. "We have the best interests of the nation at heart." Citizens are now left with no rational choice to protect savings, college plans, and investments but to accept the new aristocracies' trillion dollar picking of our pockets to prop up institutions that must function. It is not the first time in recent years that we have accepted the grasping hand of the federal government in our wallets to avert a disaster not of our making.

In 1983 a "Blue Ribbon" panel of similar leaders including Alan Greenspan, Daniel Patrick Moynihan and others "saved" Social Security from another big collapse by dramatically raising taxes on earnings of up to $97,500 annually. The promise, then, was that Baby Boomers would actually "pre-fund" their own retirement with astoundingly increased taxes, decades ahead of time. It was also promised as relief to the coming generations so they would be free of crippling taxes. Sounded good.

Lo and behold, the trillions of dollars taken in since then—far exceeding promised payments to senior citizens—have since been spent on everything else. Turns out, that it was nothing more than a new tax levied on those with earnings below $97,500 a year so executive and legislative branch office holders could have more of our money to spend extravagantly on "us" so they could win new terms in office. The FICA payroll tax has become a major factor in keeping the poor that way, retarding new business growth and keeping middle-class earners from moving up. Worst, it also turns out that our children and grandchildren will, in fact, still be burdened an ever-growing and mind-numbing national debt AND unbelievably high FICA taxes to support their parents.

In yet another example of playing fast and loose with politics and our money, 1986 saw Congress reject the tax policies of the Reagan administration and as consequence, the Savings and Loan industry collapsed. Turns out the definition of the tax value of real estate holdings had been changed overnight by the House Ways and Means Committee and banks no longer met liquidity rules. That politically inspired cat fight cost American taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. And worse, we didn't learn.

It is past time--way past time--for hometown America to save America from our well-intentioned but criminally incompetent, at best, and cynically corrupted , at worst, national leadership. Do we have a moment to lose? Do we really need any more examples of how the new aristocracy can—and will—destroy the pursuit of happiness?

The reform that can save the nation and restore our identity as citizens who have empowered and limited government (instead of the other way around) is called the FairTax.

Because the FairTax allows every American to take home everything that is earned without any federal withholding, millions of distressed homeowners could actually afford home mortgage payments. The elimination of FICA taxes eliminates the highly regressive Social Security and Medicate tax but the FairTax provides a far broader stream of revenue into these faltering programs. Because the FairTax eliminates all exemptions, gimmicks and loopholes, Congress would be removed from the ability to buy votes with tax giveaways and billionaires pay taxes when they spend money. Because the FairTax makes nearly all federal government taxes entirely transparent, the sovereign citizen can know the score and put the brakes on extravagant new spending. Because the FairTax eliminates the price advantage now enjoyed by overseas producers, American jobs won't be leaving our shores. In fact, because the FairTax makes the USA the most favorable tax environment in the world, we can expect trillions of dollars of investment rushing into the US economy. With the FairTax, our money is ours first and only secondly devoted to government. Savings growth, investments and business decisions are guided by opportunity and real progress instead of tax avoidance tactics.

We've lost more than $2 trillion of our retirement savings in a week's time and our kid's future at college is in serious jeopardy. This didn't happen by accident but at the hands of the very same people who have given the FairTax a cold shoulder. Those candidates and incumbents of either party who would spend our future earnings to stay in office and who reject the FairTax for similarly self-interested reasons now need a strong reminder from voters about whose offices they occupy. Please pay attention to our voting guide and send that message.

Finally, our campaign needs your help—as always. We never have enough to do the job right. Send us a contribution if you can, even in these hard times. It may turn out to be the best investment you ever made. If you can't afford a donation, then help us by recruiting two new supporters. And keep your cards, letters, phone calls, faxes and e-mails going to incumbents and candidates.

The plain fact is, we either now save ourselves from our new aristocracy or suffer the consequences as modern day serfs in a nation never contemplated by our Founding Fathers.

Trust is earned
In God I trust, not any in Washington. This debacle took both parties, and the president to boot. Trusted is earned and three parties have lost it:President Bush, Speaker Pelosi, and Senate Majority leader Reed. Together they have blown up the size of government to beyond anything any one party have ever done. New agencies and entitlements that will never leave the face of the earth.Trust is something no one in Washington should tell the voting public. The only good thing out of this mess is people will be voting.McCain/Palin to be able to sleep at night.

Since FDR, when the country had NO DEBT,
we now have a debt of $109 trillion.

The unfunded Soc. Sec. *trust*--which was once in a *lock box* but which Johnson and a Dem. Congress removed in 1968--has an unfunded liability of $49 trillion.

The US GNP is $13 trillion.

The US fed budget is $3 trillion, but we have spent of it $700 billion on oil from mostly enemies, $700 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan, and now $700 billion for stupid bankers and their borrowers. Where the rest we are spending is coming from is a good guess.

O wants to spend another trillion and take money from anyone who makes it. 1/3 of my last paycheck went for fed taxes, and I make nowheres near the $250,000 the O thinks makes one wealthy. He's absurd. And the O wants to take more.

People who vote for this criminality are either parasites on the system getting nothing but state aid and support or they need a third-grade arithematic review.

Voters
The problem is that the people keep unwittingly voting these people in. I do not believe the average voter understands the ramifications of each of his or her votes. Most Americans do not understand what happened with the mortgage crisis, and they are content to agree with Obama and the mainstream media that it was the Republicans wanting to de-regulate everything, along with unfettered corporate greed. They have no real understanding. I believe in democracy, but I am not sure that age and citizenship are the best requirements for voter eligibility. It used to be that one had to own land, having a stake in their community and having proved to be productive, in order to vote. I do not know what the standards should be, or if we should even go about changing them. But, I do know that none of this will change as long as we have a culture that prizes youth, glamour and great rhetoric over experience, wisdom and a record of dedication to America and her interests. Our culture is becoming increasingly shallow. Perhaps it will take four years of an Obama presidency (God help us) to shake people up a bit into actually thinking about things.

Hey "Stupid"
The greatest reason for America's present "Meltdown", is the ignorance of it's people. Having an economic background would not hurt anyone but it might help to keep government "Honest". If Americans, don't embrace the need to learn all they can about their economy,it's a round-trip. I will see "US" at the station. SORRY!!!

Better cling to your guns....
The Bush Adm. just handed the Dems. another tool to keep americans on their Plantation. The strongarm deal to control the big banks will be their next push to make the world more "fair". As they "control" these large banks in their politiclly correct ways look for more unrest. As the democratic leadership feels threatened they will look to "control" guns (codeword for taking your guns) to make the country safe. If guns are outlawed 2 groups will have them criminals and the government.

Senator Government
What is amazing to me is so MANY people really feel that the right thing to do is take "Joe the Plumbers" money and let Senator Government decide what to with it.

When Senator McCain said in the Date last night;
" You know, when Sen. Obama ended up his conversation with Joe the plumber -- we need to spread the wealth around. In other words, we're going to take Joe's money, give it to Sen. Obama, and let him spread the wealth around.

I want Joe the plumber to spread that wealth around. You told him you wanted to spread the wealth around.

The whole premise behind Sen. Obama's plans are class warfare, let's spread the wealth around"

and

This really gets down to the fundamental difference in our philosophies. If you notice that in all of this proposal, Senator -- government --wants -- Sen. Obama wants government to do the job.

Sen. Obama wants government to do the job. I want, Joe, you to do the job.

I want to leave money in your pocket. I want you to be able to choose "

and at that point the debate should have been over. Sen Obama should have went home and got six votes, one from himself, his wife, his mom, Joe Biden and two fraud votes from mickey mouse that acorn registered.

The rest of America should stand up and say no to more government. But a majority of Americans think Senator Government won!

Tinsldr2@yahoo.com

The big lie
we have been sold is that debt is wealth! The federal government has promoted this lie and has set the example by continued deficit spending. Both parties are guilty and both should be rejected for the liars that they are.

The American people have had the greatest scam ever perpetrated upon them by the DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda machines. We have been told we have no other choice, nowhere else to go, that we must vote the lesser of two evils every election. In this way, the elites have kept power in their own hands, and we foolishly believe that by doing the same thing we will get a different result.

If you care to see how the elites have stolen our inheritance, I urge you to visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. The future we are passing along to our children is now mortgaged to the hilt. Is anyone ready to say enough? Thanks, Joe

Government business acumen

Back in 1990, the Government seized the famed "Mustang Ranch" brothel in Nevada for tax evasion and, as required by law, tried to run it. They failed miserably ....and it closed.

Now we are trusting the economy of our country to a pack of nit-wits who couldn't make money running a whore house and selling booze?

How dumb can the American public be electing these nit-wits? It's not the nit-wits fault. They are going to take everything they can if we are going to give it to them and we have been giving it to them by the truck load.

It's time to pay the piper and everybody who has ever had a democrat bumper sticker on their car can sit down and shut up because you now have EXACTLY what the democrats have been telling you they were going to give you. And if you like it so far, you are just going to LOVE what is coming next. And oh Yeah. There is a LOT of NEXT coming and you deserve EVERY BIT OF IT!

Starting weeding them out now...
Once the Democrats take over you can kiss the FairTax idea goodbye. Their whole platform is built around manipulation of the tax system. Once that system is gone they have nothing. The only way to get the FairTax passed is to vote out anyone that won't sign on to it and to not send money to a candidate unless he is signed on. It's not too late to start. We have an election in less than three weeks. We can start weeding them out now. Soon, the message will come clear to those resisting.

Kurt,

three groups will have guns, the government, the criminals and the resistance.

Kurt,
Youare right and we are absolutely helpless to stop it. Our Congress has supreme authority to make the rules that govern THEM. How did we ever let that happen? They should not have the authority to make laws on fundraising, earmarks and lobbyists. Ethics committees should not be comprised of their fellow cronies. This lack of separation of power has basically caused this mess. When a Senator can buy land and have a highway earmarked to go thru it, when a Senator can set up a sham non-profit business with earmarks, we should know we are in trouble. Funny how our elected officials, under the guise of public servants, become wealthy during their tenure. Yet, there is nothing we can do...

Trust is earned .........
Trust is earned through hard, consistent good actions over time. Trust can be lost in a blink of an eye. And trust lost is very difficult to regain. Our governmewnt cannot be trusted now! And our government does not appear to be interested in regaining our trust. So lets do what we should by replacing the untrustworthy with trustworthy elected & appointed government personnel!

A few problems with Fair Tax
1. Congress could add new federal taxes after Fair Tax is enacted.

2. The Fair Tax prebate sets up an expectation of money from the Federal government. This could be mis-used to redistribute wealth by a crafty congress.

3. Unless congress cuts spending and is forced to balance their budget no tax system will cure our ills. Our National budget should be cut by 20% then frozen for 5 years as a good start.

4. Not all Federal taxes will be replaced by the Fair Tax.

These problems are serious and should be addressed before installing a Fair Tax system. The prebate is the most dangerous. It would be better to not tax some items rather than prebate at the poverty level. If groceries, electricity, water, gasoline, heating gas and articles of clothing less than $50 were not taxed by Fair Tax the poor would be able to live largely without taxes making their lives impossible. The prebate is based on the poverty level that is set by the Feds so this reliance on Feds should be severed.

Fair Tax is a positive step but needs some finishing touches.

Silver Lion
And that's because not enough people are asking them to. Like the man said - ignorance is bliss.

I'm supposed to trust McCain or Obama. Or the GOP - or the Democrats. How does this work? 8 years of $500 B deficits, six of which were controlled by the GOP, and a government that increased spending by 75% in that same time frame. A bailout signed off on by both parties and the candidates, that begins with banks, extends to insurance companies and hedge funds, and will be followed by buying up foreclosures as well as renegotiating/buying non-foreclosed mortgages on homes whose value is less than the mortgage. Then, we will bail out state and lcoal governments whose property taxes have cratered, and toss more money at the auto industry. And, while this happens, Obama's health care plan is projected at $160 billion a year, or you can buy McCain's slightly cheaper version at $130 billion a year. And, of yes, forgive me, both parties are now working on "THEIR" version of a stimulant program. And next year, well, say "hello" to our first trillion dollar deficits.

But why worry? We can still run two wars, and pay for all of those entitlements we can't afford.

Now really folks. Who is that I'm supposed to vote for?

Deacon
Please, read the book or go to Fairtax.org it will explain your misconceptions. Over $20M. has been spent researching the ways that finally lead to the "Fair Tax" if all else fails look up S.R.25 and read it.
Budget cuts are another battle all together. With the Fair Tax in place we could force them to cut the budget.
I don't care if not all the Federal taxes are cut the ones that concern us the most are the personal and corporate taxes. I hope you realize that corporations cannot pay taxes they are inanimate objects, we give money to the company and the company then forwards our money to the government they are do not pay taxes.

Brian
The Fair tax prebate is my main concern. It is dangerous and it continues the dependency on the Federal governments monthly check.

I don't see how Fair Tax will allow us to force our government to balance the budget. Yes more people would be aware of how much tax they pay but that awareness may not translate into action focused on making congress behave.

Like I said the Fair Tax is a positive step but it needs some further polish.

Just Trust the Government?!?
Politicians are like children; you need to keep an eye on them or all the cookies will disappear from the cookie jar. Unlike children, of course, they use all kinds of nefarious methods to pry money from the taxpayers. They'd pick your individual pockets if they could get away with it and do it on a massive scale but taxation is plenty efficient for their purposes, which includes lining their pockets in the bargain. Simply disgusting!
Regarding the recent financial "crisis": Paulson is just trying to “bail out” a few of his big bucks buddies at taxpayers’ expense. America better completely disregard this bozo and look at the problem from a clean slate approach. Flow chart and diagram in detail the whole Ponzi scheme of the financial industry. Determine exactly what went wrong and why. Assign fair blame and seriously punish wrongdoing. Create new, better rules/laws to make the financial industry more honest, transparent, and accountable. Include “just right” oversight by regulatory agencies. This will take time, lots of time but if we don’t want a repeat of this or worse in 5-10 years then we need to do it right…now.

Just Trust the Government?!?
Questions, rhetorical questions: Will the taxpayer, who is being saddled so far with a trillion dollar bailout, ever get reimbursed? If so, how? The way I understand it so far is that money is being showered on these greedy incompetents/crooks on Wall Street with little assurance that we’ll recoup anything. Even if moneys will be repaid, it will be to the U.S. Treasury and, to my knowledge, no provisions in the bailout legislation addresses how the moneys returned to the treasury will be repatriated back to the taxpayer. What I strongly suspect will happen is that if by a miracle any moneys flows back into government coffers the temptation by the politico thieves will be to use the moneys to fund their programs or as a sludge fund to bail out some other government caused disaster without any of it ever returned to the originator, the taxpayer.

DEACON
I understand your reservations on the prebate portion of the FairTax, but it is the prebate that keeps the FairTax fair. When you start making exemptions for food, electic, gasoline, etc. then what is the next exemption.
Why should the person who owns the 5,000-6,000 sq. ft. home with a heated pool get to spend $500-$1000 tax free on heat, while the person living in a one room apt. spends $50-$100 for heat.
The person who wants to eat steak and lobster every night ought to pay more tax than the person who goes with beans and hamburger.
This is why the prebate works, and exemptions are not a good idea.
One more quick thought on the FairTax, what better weapon against class warfare that the democrats want to wage, money is worthless until it is spent on something.

Some states with sales tax do not tax food or clothing. Do these states know something that we don't? With that in mind I don't see why Fair Tax needs to tax food and clothing especially if the clothing were limited to $50 per article as tax free. I am sure many people that eat fancy foods also like to dine in restaurants. Dining out would be taxed by the Fair Tax. As to large families getting a break on food I am sure they could use a little help.

As to not taxing electricity or heating gas it would be easy to limit the tax free part to the first $150 per month.

Gasoline has a built in tax which is sufficient.

Yes, congress could adjust these exemptions just like congress could apply a means test to the prebate. If you don't trust congress you should choose options that put congress at a disadvantage. I think exemptions would be harder for congress to mess with since it woud affect everyone. Perhaps that is why when a fair taxlike proposal was made some years ago it was declined because it did feature exemptions. Means testing could be applied to what ever level of income they wanted.

The strength of Fair Tax is the removal of corporate taxes thus making the USA more competitive. Fair Tax would also treat foreign and domestic products the same. These are solid points and would make a huge impact on the job scene.

The Only Way to Pass the Fair Tax.....
FairTax.org needs to implore that all Americans that support the Fair Tax write in their vote as "Fair Tax". In other words, every ballot of every election has a line where you can write in your choice instead of marking it for one of the printed canidates.

If millions of Fair Tax supporters start writng in Fair Tax instead of voting for the politicians that won't support it, regardless of party, maybe it will get noticed by the press and politicians will look at the number of votes they could have had had they supported it.

If you keep voting for the same people, you'll get the same thing. Why should politicians support it when they can try to win on other issues? Both parties distract us and pit one American against another over lame social issues while both partys participate in robbing us blind with taxes and reap the benefits from lobbyist for tax breaks.

WAKE UP PEOPLE AND TAKE A STAND FOR THE FAIR TAX. I won't be voting for McCain or Obama Nov.4, I'll be voting for the Fair Tax. It's not a wasted vote, it's a strong message. If millions do it, politicians will hear it. Spread the word.

Economic Stimulus
Why aren't more of our elected officials explaining how are tax code discourages investment in our country? The FairTax Act is already filed in Congress and was written based on more than $20 million in economic research.

We acknowledge that our economy is on shaky ground. Call your members of Congress at 1-202-225-3121 and demand that they co-sponsor the FairTax Act (HR-25/S-1025) to revive our economy!

Tax and Spend
You are absolutely right that the soaring federal debt is a primary reason for our economic downturn. Isn't it ironic that the greatest contribution to that debt occurred during the Reagan, Bush and Bush administrations.

Why is the Republican borrow and squander superior to what they call tax and spend? Its not like the Republicans don’t spend – they spend on things like wars that weaken our military and create more enemies that harms our country. The Democrats spend on things like education, healthcare, infrastructure and research that made our country the world’s leading economy, which the Republican’s pandering to the wealthy is jeopardizing.

As for redistribution of wealth, the Republican’s are responsible for redistributing wealth from the lower and middle classes to the wealthiest individuals at record rates. Warren Buffet, the third wealthiest person on earth doesn’t think it’s fair that his overall tax rate is close to half that of his secretary, who earns on thousandth (that’s 1/1,000) of what he does. What Obama wants to do is return to the tax rates on the wealthy to what were in effect during the longest sustained period of economic growth in our nation’s history, in during which the national debt was actually reduced.
