Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Last week, in the midst of President Obama's efforts to push unprecedented expansions of federal regulatory authority through Congress, North Korea's bellicose threats of nuclear annihilation, and the Iranian regime's brutal campaign to suppress political dissent, the American public's attention was focused elsewhere.

On June 25th, 2009, the nation plunged into mourning upon learning of the tragic deaths of Michael Jackson—inimitable King of Pop—and Hollywood's original "angel" Farah Fawcett. In the time it took for a commercial break, the coverage of the Iranian protests, the debates about cap and trade and healthcare reform, and the diplomatic efforts to recover two American journalists being detained in a North Korean prison all but disappeared. It was eclipsed by footage of distraught fans, video montages, musical tributes, celebrity elegies, and speculation about how the Obama administration might respond.

This lopsided allocation of media attention and public focus is an ominous indicator of how shallow and superficial we've become as a nation, and calls into question whether a nation fixated on entertainment possesses the maturity, discipline, judgment, and civic virtue necessary to preserve freedom in an increasingly hostile world.

While the deaths of two pop-culture icons are certainly newsworthy, the amount of news coverage devoted to America's celebrity obsession is grossly out of proportion in light of the weighty issues confronting our country at this hour. Have we become so shallow, so superficial, SO celebrity-obsessed that Michael Jackson's death is more upsetting, more real to us, than images of democratic protesters bleeding in the streets—that participating in the shameful exploitation of Jon and Kate Gosselin's crumbling marriage on TLC is more important than watching congressional debates about the future of our health care system on C-SPAN?

In the introductory chapter of his book, The Roots of American Order, Russell Kirk discusses the concept of order and how it relates to the success or failure of any society. According to Kirk, "[the civil social] order signifies the performance of certain duties and the enjoyment of certain rights in a community." He suggests that "a disordered existence is a confused and miserable existence. If a society falls into general disorder, many of its members will cease to exist at all. And if the members of a society are disordered in spirit, the outward order of the commonwealth cannot endure."

American society appears to be suffering from a disordered spirit of the kind Kirk describes. One can’t help but wonder if we have lost our capacity for serious engagement with the world around us, and thus our ability to engage with society in a dutiful and conscientious manner. We are increasingly drawn to digital or virtual venues that allow us to escape the humdrum realities of everyday life in exchange for a fantasy world that titillates our senses and tickles our funny bones. In the process, we are losing the ability to distinguish between the important and the inconsequential in our society. Who has time to follow the confirmation process of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor when the American public is busy keeping up with the Kardashians? Who wants to hear the depressing details of the starvation and poverty plaguing the Third World when we can watch wannabe celebrities starve themselves for money on the latest season of Survivor?

Is it any wonder that only 22% of people polled can name the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, while 66% can name at least one celebrity judge on American Idol, or that more people can name all five of the Simpson family members than can name the five freedoms protected under the First Amendment?

This misdirection of energy and attention cannot be without negative consequences for the future of American society. Much as Rome's rejection of the fundamental social, spiritual, and cultural components that made her a mighty empire precipitated her downfall, America's preoccupation with "bread and circuses" to the exclusion of more important matters portends a bleak future for our republic.

Who is responsible for this unfortunate phenomenon? Many blame the media for our obsession with entertainment. After all, the media bigwigs—the proverbial wizards behind the curtain—decide what to broadcast and what to leave on the cutting room floor. Are these behemoth corporations, in their quest for ratings, feeding America's baser instincts? Are they exploiting our prurient nature in order to make a quick buck? Even if this is the case, the American people are still left holding the bag of responsibility. We choose what media to consume, which websites to visit, which books to read; we choose how to allocate our time and attention. We are the ones who find reality TV and celebrity culture more entertaining, more fun, less boring, and less hard, than the real world.

But reality TV is not reality, and the truth is that many celebrities' lives are plagued by drug abuse, domestic scandals, and professional failure. From Elvis and Marilyn Monroe, to Anna Nicole and Heath Ledger... the lifestyles of the rich and famous often end in desolation and despair. Yet our society has deified these individuals and glamorized the lives they portray, leading more and more Americans to feel that the only kind of life worth living is a life lived in front of the camera.

The price paid for this delusion is that our society is increasingly losing its ability to celebrate what English writer, philosopher, and Christian apologist G. K. Chesterton called the really human things—those things required for a just society to endure. And as our spirits become more vacant, more disordered, and more obsessed with titillating drivel, we run the risk of suffering the same decline as our forebears in the Roman republic. As Kirk noted, "The late Roman world, then, was a culture spiritually impoverished and disordered, lacking a common core of belief. It has been called a dead world: a time in which the old Roman virtues had been lost by the mass of men.... It was a world spiritually and intellectually bored. Mankind can endure anything but boredom. Because men could not order their own despairing souls, the order of the commonwealth could not be saved."

We Americans must ask ourselves whether we are prepared to suffer the fate of our Roman forebears, or whether we are wise and disciplined enough to learn from their mistakes and make the changes necessary to get this great nation back on the right track.

Huxley called it
"Soma." Let the brave new Americans invent the game "centrifugal bumblepuppy" and prove where the nation has sunk. After the final loss of any will to think or resist, Orwell's vision of a military boot on everyone's neck, in 1984 may actually come to pass.

Lastly, in the words of The Borg, "resistance is futile."

Extend your hand or forehead and receive a mark for buying and selling. If you have ears, may you hear.

It is revealing on so many levels
that the details (so far as they are known) of MJ's death and now his upcoming memorial (Gawd help us, what a circus that will be), are FIRST in the news, rather than last, where they should be. OK, he's dead. Tragically so. But...we'll all be dead someday. In the meantime, the Gargoyle from NK is shooting missiles in defiance of UN sanctions. Who cares?

Not the cases of arrested development who publicly swoon and boo-hoo over a man-child they've never met, much less knew.

And the article does not even discuss
the swooning, fawning idolatrous press coverage of the Man They Would Have Be King.

Addiction to the Cult of Celebrity
One of the results of this addiction is that Americans have given over good sense to mindless entertainment. And they now allow themselves to be lectured by the likes of Janine Garafalo, Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, et al. Jay Leno and David Letterman become authorites on the talents and qualifications of Presidents.

When even the more serious media caved to the excess reporting of the events surrounding the death of a talented but bizzare man, we became painfully aware of just how far we've sunk.

Then again the election of the current occupant of the White House has already brought that fact painfully home.

Partisanship blinds
Laura Hollis: "And the article does not even discuss the swooning, fawning idolatrous press coverage of the Man They Would Have Be King."

No worse than FAUX News' servile coverage of the Bush regime, Laura.

Glenn Beck
Glenn Beck did it best. He would start each show with....
Yes......Michael Jackson is still dead.
Now to the REAL news.

Jon Stewart -- the most trusted name
samplin: "When even the more serious media caved to the excess reporting of the events surrounding the death of a talented but bizzare man, we became painfully aware of just how far we've sunk."

Jon Stewart has become the most trusted name in news ... because he adroitly makes fun of it. Mark Russell served that purpose twenty years ago, hoisting Dems and 'Pubs alike on their own petards.

If you really want to know the truth about a man, ask his ex-mistress. Read Daily Kos for the truth about Republicans, and Townhall for the truth about Democrats.

Don in NV
whassamatter donny BOY? Did the huff n puff or the kos kids kick you out for the day? So, you figured you would just come over here and be a whiney pain in the A $$

Chuck Norris?!?
samplin: "And they now allow themselves to be lectured by the likes of Janine Garafalo, Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, et al."

Townhall's columnist line-up includes Chuck Norris ... who didn't even attend college. Exactly what in his background makes him worth listening to on matters not involving martial arts?

I fear for Glenn Beck's sanity, but....
Bobby: "Glenn Beck did it best. He would start each show with.... Yes......Michael Jackson is still dead."

While I share Stephen Colbert's fear for Glenn Beck's sanity (
http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/04/stephen-colbert.htm l ), I have to give him props for this one.

Daily Kos
Bobby: "whassamatter donny BOY? Did the huff n puff or the kos kids kick you out for the day?"

They banned me permanently ... for bringing up uncomfortable topics like illegal immigration.

Neither side has a monopoly on intolerance for competing views.

Rubbish....
"This lopsided allocation of media attention and public focus is an ominous indicator of how shallow and superficial we've become as a nation..."

It's an indicator of the media and the culture that gives rise to it. Point fingers at the Liberal intelligentsia. The "nation", as a whole, has nothing to do with it. Personally, I think coverage of government and all this foreign conflict stuff is way overblown and overexposed and overrated itself. Michael Jackson only dies once, but we have hear or see something of Obama everyday he's in office. It gets tiresome.

I watched in vain
for news about the July 4 TEA parties. Even FOX had hours of Michael, Michael, until I had to leave in disgust. If it wasn't Michael, it was Sarah. I love Sarah. I belong to Team Sarah. But did anyone notice the massive protests people gave up their holiday for?

Apparently not. Hero/ heroine worship trumps real news and produces ratings. Remember who was producing the ratings this time last year? The Big O, and look where that got us.

Dumbing Down America
The media does non-stop reporting, in full details, of the celebrities to the point I turn off the station. Our local TV station never mentioned the House of Rep.'s Cap and Trade Vote. The media IS controlling the events and keeping the vast majority dumb.

miket and farah
Neither one of them did anything to compare with what Ed McMahon did.He and Johnny entertained us nightly for many years.Unknown to most Ed was a true war heroe.

sad state of affairs..
How long has the king of poop been dead now ? A
week ? And there is still a huge crowd of simpleton's hanging out in front of that pad that Jacko rented for a hundred grand a month !!
What in the sam hill are those people doing ? Hoping to catch a glimpse of Janet or Jermaine ? What are they gonna do if they see a coveted family member ? Pee thier pants ? Don't
these people have anything better to do ? Like, maybe go home ? Isn't there a rerun of American Idol on TV this afternoon ?

Princess Diana and Mother Theresa
Princess Diana died August 31, 1997. Mother Theresa died 5 short days later. Princess Diana was just a figurehead and what many considered a beauty queen. Mother Theresa was a woman who sacrificed of herself to help others in an extraordinary way. Yet who got, and still gets, more news coverage? Our news media has been screwed up for many many years. Fun and fantasy gets more attention than reality.

Anything better to do?
Don't they have anything better to do? Like w-o-r-k, for instance? Or like contributing something positive to society? Or doing something meaningful, engaging, rewarding or satisfying to someone other than their brain-damaged selves?

Ken Connor - I cringed as I read line by line what you said, not because of any disagreement, but simply because you were dead on-target and the truth of what you say is so devastating.

Somewhere along the line on my way to my early 60's I realized as a nation we had lost our way. It is, of course, impossible to set an exact date due to the collapse being gradual. The crystallization, for me however, was the election of the Usurper, the Marxist Maggot currently occupying the Offal/Awful/Oaf-full Office. That single circumstance sounded the death-knell for the American Republic.

When 1.2 million citizens are so vacuous, vapid, insipid, base and shallow as to make it a priority in their lives to obtain Child-Molester-Jackson funeral tickets there is not much hope for a successful continuance of this once grand Republic.

Hollywood training film

A teenager is made to sit in a hard chair in a drafty room, next to people he doesn't like, watching a scratchy picture on a small screen, and the teacher's union will tell you he is learning, learning, he's learning.

Later that same day, that same person is sitting in a comfortable upholstered chair in an air-conditioned room, eating pop-corn and drinking a coke, sitting next to his girlfriend, watching a technically perfect picture on a huge screen, and we are told he is learning nothing, he is being entertained.

Why is it a surprise that a person who sees hours of the trash and filth shown on TV, in computer games, and in movie theaters, has their style of life changed? And don't say your child saw those same films and programs and killed no one. Millions of people saw a commercial for a new car last night, and only a very, very few bought the car.

Repeated and constant exposure to computer games, TV programs, and movies can and does influence a life. Can Hollywood be proud of what they teach?

This whole MJ mess
is a fiasco. I couldn't belelieve that two different reporters on FOX said, "This is as big as the day Princess Diana died." and "This is a shocker on a scale not seen since the death of JFK." Honestly! How could FOX cave to this poppycock? I wouldn't be surprised if the Jackson family mummifies MJ and puts him on display in a glass coffin for the world to see whenever they want so that they may contiuously mourn. This family seems as bassackward as they get---- bury him already! This circus is not honoring him in any way.

MSM reports drivel
The MSM is in the tank for Obama and reports what it is told to report. The reason for such celebrity drivel and other brain-dead news coverage is a distraction so the people won't be aware of important issues like cap and trade legislation. They want us to watch one hand while the other hand is busy doing vile things.
My grandson will never know liberty as I have known in my life, thanks to that marxist usurper and his evil minions, Pelosi, Kennedy and Reid. I could almost believe he is Hitler incarnate, except that I don't believe in reincarnation. He just chooses to follow Hitler's example.
I am surprised that Michael Jackson and Barack Obama's fans haven't asked Obama to resurrect the dead Michael Jackson.

Sanford was the beneficiary
No one benefitted more from the Jackson death than Mark Sanford. His public confession about Miss Argentina and his other inappropriate liasons was pushed to page 10. But take heart. Sarah Palin's dead fish rambling resignation kicked Jackson out of the news. What a country.

We're not in Kansas...
anymore Toto. Mr. Connor hit the nail right on the head. Many of my friends and I have been boycotting T.V. news altogether (given the caliber of reporting) and opting for internet reports where we can pick the stories that are relevant to our lives and to the goings on in the world. The constant bombastic bombardment of "cult driven" reality is tearing apart the social fabric and mental state of this country. We have become desensitized to World affairs unless they involve our favorite Idol. Wake up America, we're being lead down the Primrose path to our own demise. It's time for the masses to think for themselves, although it is easier to follow the drone of boobtube......
"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtian", because if you look close enough you will see that he is just A FRIGHTENED LITTLE MAN.

JACKO FANS BEWARE!
Don't read my piece: Mangled Michael the King of Flop. It will fill you with rage.

Thank You, Mr. Connor
It would be great if all people could read your article and really grasp what you are trying to tell us. I have always shared your views on this subject and have ignored cult-followers like the plague. I have witnessed people who I considered fairly intelligent turn to jelly when meeting some public figure. They seem to be awe struck and speechless as if they were worshipping at some God's feet. Having met and talked to Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Pavarotti, Don and Phil Everly, Harry Belafonte, Mark and Antoinette Hatfield, Wayne Morse and a number of other well-known figures, they were just people doing their job and nothing more. I certainly never asked for an autograph from anyone. They didn't ask me for mine, why should I ask for theirs? Like you, Mr. Connor, I live in the real world and am fully aware of the challenges our nation faces and keep up daily. I can truthfully say that in my seventy-five year life span, I have never been bored and I owe most of that fact to sixty-six years of straight and hard work and a determination to provide for my family. If I extend my hand, it is either to greet you or perform some task and has never meant that I wanted a handout from anyone, ever! I owe everything to this great nation that has allowed me to be my own man. Nothing replaces honor and pride, certainly no Hollywood production in California or at the White House.

Clifton L. West, a Democrat for 54 years

Very good indeed..
This article has been bouncing around my mind for days- yes even before it was written the same ideas have been percolating inside my head. The shallowness of this country is awe inspiring. When fantasy becomes primary and reality becomes secondary a country is in steep decline. History shows it- but history is part of reality so those engaged in fantasy will never understand. This trend has been going on for decades but is now in full ascendency. Obama himself is a media cult celebrity who fits into reality as a fantasy figure- an individual who can do no wrong and is glorified with god like reverance. Even he is becoming uncomfortable at times- at the correspondents dinner he seemed almost contemptuous of those who have blindly followed and covered him (though he undoubtedly accepts and utilizes it to his own advantage). This is the nature of this stuff- the more fantasy the less satisfaction and the more hardened and cynical people become. I really thought after 911 this country was awakening- but like children in a secure playground where reality intruded only for a moment (no matter that the moment was so horrid) they revert to playground activities and fantasy takes over again until the next terrible awakening (of course then they will be totally unprepared).

That doesn't make sense

You sounded like a real person, not a demo. I could have written the whole thing (except you are a youngster), except for that closing statement.

Clifton L. West, a Democrat for 54 years

Article expresses my feelings exactly
When MJ popped up in the news because of his death, it hit me, that he and Obama were so much alike. To me they are both repulsive, and they both have a cult following. How many of the people that voted for Obama had a clue what he is about and what he would do in office. I thought I knew what he wanted to do, and yet every day I learn more and more of how his plans will destroy this country.

Shame on the Media!
The American people are concerned about the greed and immorality and failure of the liberal public servants in office to uphold the U.S. Constitution, but those in public office don't seem to care what the people think or even vote for as they trample on their freedoms and refuse to uphold the laws for some. They hand over millions of dollars to groups like ACORN so they can be "struggle free." They hand over millions to Planned Parenthood so they can be "struggle free." They hand over millions to AIG so they can be "struggle free." They hand over $20.3 million to the Palestinian refugees tied to Hamas so they can be "struggle free." They hand over millions to abort unborn babies worldwide so those unborn babies can be "struggle free" from experiencing struggles in life and their parents can be "struggle free" and never have to support their babies. They hand over millions to promote amnesty so those violating our laws can be "struggle free." They hand over millions so Pelosi can be "struggle free" from flying coach.

Yes, Obama has done what he said, he is creating a "struggle free" society for those he favors, but for the U.S. taxpayers, I believe that your "struggles" have only just begun. Where's the jobs and the redistribution of wealth you were promised before he printed up the trillions to save you from losing your jobs?

celebrity worship
Is a symptom of a sick society. I don't think the majority are affected, but certainly the vocal left has the megaphone.
They don't even realize how ridiculous they are.

Hollywoodites circulated a petition right after the election in which they "Vowed to serve President Obama".
Sick.
Same with Michael Jackson.

It is because they eschew religion, making it all the more ironic (gotta worship something).

Sorry, you're sick if you swoon, mourn, worship a person you've never met and only seen on the magic screen.

M. Jackson & OBama
Regarding Jacksons demise. I cannot see why one would idolize someone of his character. There is no one in the entertainment business that has any importance to me. They simply are people pretending to be other then themselves.

I have also had more than enough of our daily saturation in the media of OBama's photo Ops and speechs. I hope we still have a United
States Of America that can recover from his presidency when he goes out of my White Kouse..

Music stopped when Fred Wariing Died

Any thing since, is spewing the

Sewer Sounds of the Garbage Generation.

I have never listened to a complete garbage song (I hate to use that word here), and never will.

I didn't know Elvis could sing until after he died when I found the CDs with Elvis singing Hymns. They are great.

Let the music play

My harp will not turn to mourn for any of their deaths, its a given for all men.

Let the media mourn, America has already forgotten who he was.

Don:
The ONLY thing about you that makes me uncomfortable is your incessant WHINING!!! But, the Second Amendment guarantees you the right to freedom of speech. So, in the order of he Bill Of Rights, blather away!

Let Us Enjoy It Now.
I know, I know we are a celebrity obsessed culture and I say lighten up, let us mourn Micheal and Farrah and Karl Malden, because when the Muslims take over all that celebrity kaka goes out the window, and we'll have to put up with Mullah Government sanctioned pictures of Rosie O'Donnell in a Burqharkini.

Shalom! Here's go nuttin . . .
skdee #29: I think you're on to something!

Ken #32: Pertaining to OBama I must ask, WHAT character?

Jim #33: I'm 56 and so I'm not that much younger than you are. Every generation has its own music and their poor parents always maintain that their music is MOISE! My parents didn't care much for my music and I'm not awfully fond of my sons' noise! All we can do is fold our hands and say. "ho hum". To criticize only causes the gap to wander! the

Can we talk about something
other than the creepy, child molester, Michael Jackson? He was a pop star. He died. OK. Done. News reported. Enough already.

I agree Mr. Connor,
the media has a large share in driving this cult of celebrity. But, the government schools are equally to blame. How many children even learn civics today? They are too busy learning how to put condoms on cucumbers, how wonderful the homosexual lifestyle is, and how to be green.

But the fundamental reason our society is so shallow is that we've turned our back on God. What is the old saying? "Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die." If you do not believe in eternity, why not fill up your life with pleasures and triviality?

My eyes! My eyes!
" pictures of Rosie O'Donnell in a Burqharkini."

How could you describe such a horrid image to people reading this column, particularly those who agree with you.

Now, like other truly insidous brain worms, I will never be able to erase that image from my mind, or from my soul.

Me too, Andrea in WI !
You are right on target, Mr. Connor and Andrea!

Mr. Connor
America's cult of celebrity is annoying. But America's biggest problem is its buy now, pay later attitude. On the personal, corporate, and governmental level we have spent ourselves into the poor house. In a highly competive world, can we stay on top?

celebrity news
The people in my crowd are equally mystified at all the coverage. I would assume that as soon as the first 24 hours passed, the people who wish to loose control over the matter would already be aware.

I really think the media remains as star struck as teenagers and that accounts for the incredible amount of coverage. Where would you rather be, Iran, in danger of your life or Santa Barbara, Calif? There you have it.

America's idolatry will destroy us...
Just as ancient Israel had to face the consequences of their relentless idolatry (read the Old Testament and you'll see exactly what I am talking about), America is about to take that same plunge into judgment. Instead of focusing on what is important, our media and society wants to see trashy celebrity gossip 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

God help us to cleanse our minds and our hearts of this horrid abboration.

Celebrities
Like Clifton said above, celebrities are just people. I've met Carl Maulden, Johnny Bench and Kevin Costner. I spent a few years with significant exposure to Clint Eastwood. They're just people, they all have foils like everyone else. They aren't better than us, they don't live charmed lives, they have their own set of problems they have to deal with.

The problem is that we see celebrities through the fantasy of the camera. We only see the people they pretend to be. I like to call entertainers people who have a professional identity crisis.

A couple of family friends were very good friends with Clint Eastwood for decades (hence why I spent significant time around the man) yet when the chips were down, they were snuffed by the man. We see their fortunes and fame and assume that they don't have issues. While we worry about balancing the checkbooks, they worry about who their real friends are. Money problems are just replaced with other probelms money can't solve.

I'm lucky. I had the celebrity exposure when I was 12 and 13 and it had a positive impact on my life. I know that they're just people. I remember Clint Eastwood not as Dirty Harry Calihan, but as that tall old guy that didn't like it when I was watching Hot Shots Part Deux because he didn't like the movie.

Odd to see that
in largely-literate (at least by commonly-stated statistics) America, there is a duplication of the celebrity-worship found in largely-illiterate (no question about that, the number of illiterates there exceeds combined US/Canada total population) India!

But What Is It Really About?
At last, something liberals and conservatives can agree on, the Michael Jackson coverage has been excessive and silly. But can't we still play sociologist and wonder why roughly a million people will try to attend his funeral tomorrow and why millions more will watch it raptly on television? What's the connection?

Several days ago there was an article in the NYT arguing that Jackson's popularity lies in his having been the appropriate spokesman of an era when many adults regressed to childlike behavior. Examples given were of parents abandoning parental responsibility, people accumulating unmanageable debt, and the public preferring fun (Dancing With the Stars) to information (Meet the Press) and recreation (video games, shopping) to serious education. People are reading less print media of all persuasions.

Dress was mentioned, and I can tell you that in downtown Chicago it is common to see middle-aged men dressed like children (shorts bagging down below the knees, T-shirts with pictures, backwards caps) going to doctor's appointments and restaurants, situations where long khaki pants and a neat polo shirt would be more "grownup" summer wear. I knew of a middle-aged woman who attended a funeral in "hot pants" (very short shorts) and a halter top.

I am impressed with the many on townhall who object to following ordinary rules (helmet laws, speed limits, no smoking areas) and see the customary laws of civilized society as infringements on personal liberty---they sound like children saying "you can't make me". FOX did a piece on people getting a ticket for running a red light and the FOX anchor called the ticketing mechanism "more evidence of government tyranny".

Jackson's schtick was staying a child. That seems to have reverberated with a lot of people who don't want to act like grownups.

To Don
It's something about people awarding authority to those they admire. I remember seeing somebody ask Princess Diana what should be done about the AIDS crisis. And I recall, about forty years ago, a friend moved into a subdivision where the most admired local residents were volunteer firefighters---so other neighbors consulted them on every matter from marital problems to crabgrass.

Have you noticed too the number of people who lose their invested money because they take financial advice from their brother-in-law (who isn't a finance professional) rather than a professional financial adviser (who is)?

Or who accept as true the most preposterous, Bizarro World political statements as long as they're uttered by someone we personally admire (eg Obama is training a corps of baby-eating monsters to invade our homes and devour our infants)---not much of an exaggeration of what appears daily on right-wing websites.

Carl Maulden?!
very funny.

worthless article, mr. connor.

dead celebs are, at least, news. coverage of the bs coming out of washington is slanted and boring. the focus here is correct. from david carradine, up to, and including, mr. what's his name...the quarterback...mcnair...all were eclipsed by the lad from encino, by way of detroit. an american icon, sick though he was, is probably receiving less attention than he deserves now, partly because he got more than he deserved while alive.

It's nothing new.
America's celebrity culture is nothing new. The same sort of emotional outpouring followed the death of James Dean in 1955 and of Rudolph Valentino in 1926. Supposedly, several women comitted suicide over Valentino.

Dear President Obama:
Sir, first of all, I would like to tell you that you are the poorest excuse for a U.S. citizen as I have ever heard speak. And, to think that an Un-American traitor such as yourself is actually the president of this great nation that was born of the struggles, blood, sweat and tears of many men and women much superior to yourself, that you have the audacity to go around the world Trashing This Great Nation and It' Great People and Accomplishments of this Great Nation. And, going around the world Praising Communist and Terrorist Dictators and claiming that we are not a Christian Nation. I fully understand that you are no Christian, and that you go out of your way to express and demonstrate this to your Godless Communist Buddies, and to your Islamic Terrorist Buddies, but you do not speak for me or for the Vast Majority of the Christian Citizens of this nation who are not ashamed for this nor do we apologize for this.

So, Mr. Obama, if you are so Displeased with This Great Nation and believe that we Need to Apologize for our Greatness and Goodness, why don't you pack up your U.S. hating wife, Michelle and your little darling daughters and move to your Native Land Of Your Birth, Kenya and join your Brother in his hut. This is all you deserve, if that. You, a man who has never had a real job in your life and has never served in the military, have the audacity to Apologize to Dictators for our Greatness, and at the same time to dismantle the military. No, I do not believe that you even deserve a hut. And, I doubt that your brother would much approve of you either, given the ingrate that you truly are. Mr. Obama, you are a disgrace to this nation, and I am sickened by the fact that you can go around the world Posing As Our Leader.

Too much MJ
It's a good thing that the media went over all the details of Farrah's life before she died, because she almost got lost in the shuffle when MJ trumped her death. We went on a week-long camping trip right in the middle between MJ's death and memorial, and we didn't miss a thing. It seems like MJ is even bigger than Diana. MJ was talented, but he became bizarre in the last decade or so. Not quite as bad was John Lennon, and then even Elvis was getting a little weird, but no one can top MJ. There must be something about extreme celebrity that makes a normal person go whacko. I needed my news fix and talk talk talk about MJ just didn't do it.
