Pay to Play - Gambling With America's Future

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Let's not kid ourselves. The prevailing modus operandi of Washington politicians—Democrats and Republicans alike—is "pay to play." Money is the "mother's milk" of politics. Nothing warms the hearts of members of Congress as much as campaign contributions. Special interests invest in political campaigns as a cost of doing business expecting that, if they ride the right horse across the finish line, they will get a return on that investment. And what a return! Billions of dollars in bailouts, subsidies, tax breaks, immunities from liability, preferential treatment by regulators—the list goes on and on.

The AIG scandal is Exhibit A for the benefits that accrue to those who pay to play. TIME magazine reports, "The company befriended politicians with campaign cash—$9.3 million divided evenly between Democrats and Republicans from 1990 to 2008...." In 2008, AIG doled out more than $630,000 in campaign contributions to Washington's political elites. Recipients of the corporation's largesse included Senator Chris Dodd ($103,100), then-Senator Barack Obama ($101,332), Senator John McCain ($59,499), then-Senator Hillary Clinton ($35,965), and of course many others. While, at first blush, those sums appear hefty, they are trivial when viewed in light of the $180 billion in taxpayer money that AIG received at the hands of those whose palms it greased.

If only your 401(k) produced the same return on investment!

What is particularly galling, however, is that more than $120,000 was donated to the Washington political class after AIG received its first $85 billion in bailout funds. In other words, at that point America's Number One Corporate Miscreant was spending your money, not its own, in order to prime the pump to get more of the same.

And consider this: When the stimulus bill was under consideration in February, an amendment was unanimously approved in the Senate which would have placed tight limits on bonuses over $100,000 for any company that received federal bailout money. During the final negotiations on the bill, an amendment was put forth by Senator Dodd which made sure that the limitation applied only to bonuses issued after the passage of the bill on February 11th. This enabled AIG to pay the much-ballyhooed $165 million in retention bonuses to its executives even as the company took in more and more taxpayer cash. And yes, this financial boondoggle was engineered by the same Chris Dodd who took over $100,000 from AIG. He initially denied his role in the alteration, and when he was exposed he invoked the devil-made-me-do-it defense by claiming that the Obama Administration pressured him into it.

The AIG pay to play scandal is not unique. The same M.O. was pursued by reprobates like Bernie Madoff, Jack Abramoff, and others too numerous to name.

Is it any wonder Americans are outraged? The public no longer trusts that the government is doing the right thing. A recent poll shows 77% of Americans object to the government giving more money to AIG. President Obama's disapproval ratings have jumped from 20% to 30% in two months. The number of Americans who think Wall Street workers are "as honest and moral as other people" has sunk from 41% in 2006 to 26% today.

Even the New York Times—a usually reliable cheerleader for Mr. Obama and Wall Street—is filled with columns that are critical of the mismanaged response to our current economic crisis. If the media followed the exhortation "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all," newspaper pages and TV screens across the country would be blank.

Notwithstanding the public outrage over the current debacle, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner recently unveiled the Obama Administration's latest idea: a plan to purchase "toxic assets" from banks through a public-private partnership. In other words, Geithner will re-institute yet another version of the discredited Bush/Paulson plan by using approximately $100 billion of the $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Program to relieve banks of more toxic assets. Geithner's new plan will ostensibly involve private investors, but the government will guarantee them against loss. The plan, therefore, adds an altogether new meaning to the words "free market."

The more things change, however, the more they stay the same. A few thousand years ago, the prophet Isaiah railed against the excesses of the politicians in another capital city, Jerusalem:

See how the faithful city has become a harlot! she once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her.... Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them. (Isaiah 1:21,23 NIV)

Isaiah leveled charges against the political class which included hypocrisy, greed, self indulgence, and cynicism. The government had become tilted in favor of the rich. The poor couldn't get justice. Favorable rulings and laws could be purchased for the right price. The weak and vulnerable were being exploited. Unjust laws were being enacted. Innocent blood was said to be on the hands of the leaders. Their conduct was bringing the country to the brink of ruin. Men were calling evil good and good evil. Sadly, no one arose to avert the impending crisis and to lead the country in a new direction. As a consequence, Judah literally suffered the wrath of God.

Sound familiar? Some historians maintain that the corruption of today's Washington is not unlike the corruption of Jerusalem indicted by Isaiah. They also say that America is guilty of many of the same injustices that were present in Judah of old. If they are right, what will become of America? The Bible is filled with examples of nations that were judged because of such injustices, and history is filled with examples of nations that have fallen under the weight of their wrongdoing. Will we, like Judah, hear the indictment and fail to respond? Or will we take charge of our government, remake our leadership, and change our ways?

History awaits our answer.

Bankers bailing out bankers
Just ask Geithner: Where is the money going? How much more must go? You'll get the "eye roll". Our government is owned and until this changes, we are not free. Help edify everyone you can and stand firmly against any more bailouts. Much more to come...

Moral relativism
All this moral condemnation from the same folks on the Left who are usually so reluctant to label anything as "good" or "bad". I wonder how they feel about that principle now? I think they've finally found some morality in their darkened minds -- judging from all the moral outrage, that is.

Well, America, how do you like your post-modern (beyond Good and Evil) economy? You know, where economic Darwinism is on full display...where the Strong who can buy and sell influence, and the Weak who can't are left outside holding the bill.

Hmm, you don't like it so much do you. Well, get used to it. You hate religion, you hate ethics, and now you're going to hate the changes you're going to see. Enjoy what you've brought down on your own head...biblical judgement-style!!

I'd love to know how many of the swindlers and crooked politicians go to Mass, Synagogue, or Services every Sunday. And so much publicity about Republican enmeshment with Abramoff, but not so many indictments against Democrats with AIG, Lehmann, Fannie, and Freddie...why is that, I wonder?

Campaign Finance Reform
New plan:

Can't vote for em .... can't give to em

This is a plan hatched by a friend. I love the simplicity of this idea. Make personal donations limitless but provable.

This eliminates bundlers, lobbyists, corporate contributions, foreign money and most all of the "problem funds" that politicians encounter.

I am trying to post this all over the place to get a groundswell of public support for it. We have to MAKE them do this. They won't vote money out of thier own pocket unless we force them to.

What do you think?

If the Union, say. contributes a quarter
million for your benefit in one way or another and they influenced thousands of votes, are you going to turn your back after elected? Of course not. So there is no point in being surprised or p'd off when you find out.

Publicity is our only tool for reform.

We the people have been sold out big time. Don't get your hopes up, the obama trolls will never understand the relationship between morality and economics for one simple reason. They are incapable of it.(or you might say the public schools have achieved their goals)

LOL
" Just ask Geithner: Where is the money going? How much more must go? You'll get the "eye roll".
Well, that's because of course, some that come to the money window to partake in the feast, may not really need it, or rather, if others knew who they were, it might cause further panick and then they'ed need more to cover their downbgrade, so having the losers steal inflated printed fiat future tax obligations in the dark of night saves them the disastrous fallout when the light shines down and their crooked failing fingers are seen snatching the loot.
Yeah, it's that bad - we are absolutely told transparency will destroy those looting at the window, meaning it's so bad, and still so bloated on thin air, they just have to try to maintain a sense of 'noone knows for sure" - which of course is what started the gigantic ball of puffed up stock lies to begin with.
If they keep the ball puffed up and the geeks passing around sales on surface area of the gigantic balloon without popping it, they can keep stealing air from it as the crime blows the co2 pollution into it - expanding the surface area and increasing the take.
It's really quite an ingenious and sinister system.
Time to start blowing ! Heave that global warming pollution in (future tax dollars in this case). lol

Interest groups are forbidden from
using grant money and fed. loans to lobby.

But they all do it, and pols. look the other way. So, ACORN, that entity of free volunteers out the kindness of their hearts who were bused to *spontaneously* demonstrate against AIG employees will get $1 BILLION from the *stimulus* krap and doubtless will use much of it to keep lobbying for more fed. support.

And 3 Reps. voted for it: Arlen Spector, Olympia Snowe, and Susan Collins.

But they can be persuaded, because none of Spector, Collins, or Snowe voted for card-check to give the unions the power of no secret ballots.

So, keep up the pressure to say NO. Also, 31 *bluedog* Dems. in the House have told Pelosi they won't vote the budget. Tell them BULLY and they should change parties to Reps.

The only counter party to Dems. is the Reps. No third party will ever make a dent except unintended. Perot took 12% and 9% of the vote away from Reps. in 92 and 96 and both times gave Bubba a 43% pres. win.

No raising tax rates on anyone--$250,000 earners either as people or small businesses only make up 7% of fed tax payers; no more tax credits for those making under $50,000 who pay no taxes anyway. No *free* college for people who don't belong on any campus at any time. No NO NOOOOOOOO!!!!

Sebd tea bags for April 1. 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, DC, 20500; House of Reps., DC, 20510, Senate Dirksen Building, DC, 20500.

Tea bag demonstrations in Phila. at Ind. Mall on the 18th. In Trenton, the city that envies the corruption in IL, tea bag demonstrationg the 15th, unforunately during the week.

If we don't go to the streets like Sharpton and ACORN's *spontaeous* demonstration ag. AIG, no one will ever pay attention.

Obama is using propaganda
to implement his liberal policies and agenda..His "Acorn" group reminds me of the Brownshirts that were in the tank for Hitler..They are now rent-a-mob to picket where ever their Messiah needs to make our country "THINK" that the majority of Americans follow their rage and ideology. He and his Carvilles and Rahms have coordinated all this with Unions and Acorn on a daily basis..Acorn needs to be disbanded and defeated..I am sure George Soros also has his fingers and billions intermingled with this Dem led Chaos

I'm interested in helping with a more focused effort and leveraging the "truth forces" we have right here on TH specifically. A lot can be done online, but I'm not seeing the organization here on TH that is required to create and effective movement. Is there a single place here on TH that organizes activism campaigns and supports efforts of TH'ers that want to do more with a little infrastructure - a hub if you will?

I saw
a segment with Liz Trotta on Fox this a.m., talking about the canned joke of a press conference and the shutting out of the MSM from the questions. She was of the opinion that this is going to tick off a lot of reporters to O's
detriment. We can hope but they have so much in vested in the koolaide kid it will have to
be something really, really big to get them so angry they turn on their messiah.
Ken's last couple of paragraphs do speak of our
day and I believe what's happening is what David Wilkerson has said; we aren't in a recession/depression but are in the midst of
God's wrath. He believes we are on the edge of a major calamity that will scare the daylights out of everyone, including believers. This administration/Congress is like the movie, "Something Wicked This Way Cometh," these people who are euphemistically "leading"
U.S. are evil, plain wickedly evil..they have
shaken their fist in God's face with their jazzed up baby killing agenda..and We The People will pay for their crimes, this is so widespread that only God can sort it out and heal our land.

America's Future
Money needs to be taken out of politics; not an easy thing but it can be done if we the people take our country back. For starters: All elected positions in government should be limited to two terms and for senators, each term no more than four years. Then there must be pay-for-performance and they must not be allowed to evaluate themselves nor vote their own automatic pay raises and benefits. Pay and benefits must not extend beyond their term(s). A small retirement package may be appropriate if serial wrongdoing was not perpetrated while in office; this should save taxpayers’ beaucoup dollars. Their health benefits and all other benefits should not be substantially different than the working population in general. We must insist/demand transparency in proposed legislation and ample time to review their mess by independent citizen groups and citizens at large. The impeachment process should be streamlined to get the clowns out before they bring the country down. During campaigns, the same, frugal, and finite amounts are made available to each candidate and they get the same media exposure opportunities/time to get their message across. How well they do this with the moneys and media coverage they receive is a test of their managing abilities and the soundness of their “promises”. No other contributions from any other sources than the publically scrutinized and limited amounts would be allowed. The above would go a long way to clean up the sewer that is currently “politics”, especially from special interest factions. Voters would have to remain vigilant to make sure these scumbags don’t lie, cheat, and steal. The above also would attract people who are more trustworthy and true willing servants of the people.

GM CEO resigns at Obama's behest

The White House confirms Wagoner is leaving at the government's behest.

The Obama administration asked Rick Wagoner, the chairman and CEO of General Motors, to step down and he agreed, a White House official said.

On Monday, President Obama is to unveil his plans for the auto industry, including a response to a request for additional funds by GM and Chrysler.

Wagoner’s resignation was one of the remarkable strings attached to the new aid package the administration is offering GM, based on recommendations from the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry, headed by the Treasury Department.

* CALL TO ACTION * Press Congress NOW *
see http://activated.blogtownhall.com/ and act very quickly. Do not let up ALL WEEK. WE have to act as quickly as Obama is acting VERY QUICKLY NOW to get MORE spending passed this week. The new proposals are in the PIPE NOW and this week is another huge step off the cliff. I have sent 35 faxes today myself and plan to continue all week. It has Stop NOW
American's it is time to put a STOP to the injustice that is happening to our country from our Politican's.They are destroying everythng our Country was built on. They do what they want for personnel gain and not what is for WE THE PEOPLE who they work for. This has gotten out of hand, it is time to take back country one way or the other. Obama wants to put Muslims into office , sorry but America has not forgotten 9/11. They are slowly destroying the world with their agenda from within. Time for term limits with no extra incentives like they have today. WAKE UP AMERICA before it's to late.

American Vet is Right On Target
and you are too, Ken Connor. The campaign, election and administration of Obama is the most corrupt I have seen in my 67 years as a U.S. citizen, born, raised here and serving our country in many capacities here and elsewhere.

Enough is more than enough of the Obamas, his corrupt administration and the Lib Dem Congress. It was well before he even attained the Office of President of the U.S., even before the disaster of the Congress elected in '06.

It is past time for all of this to end. Please see my blog here at Townhall.com for "A Proposed Solution ..."
