Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The latest figures on out-of-wedlock births should be setting off alarm bells in every corner of the country. After a number of years at the wholly unacceptable level of one of every three births out-of-wedlock, the numbers in the last three years have lunged to 40 percent. This is a crisis direr than the economy, more dangerous than foreign enemies. America cannot remain a superpower abroad with a crumbling family structure at home.

The crisis these new numbers represent is a crisis in male-female commitment. We are facing increasing gender rejection. Something is deeply and dangerously wrong between the sexes. Young American men are increasingly unable to commit to the mothers of their children.

In 1965, Daniel Patrick Moynihan saw a 24 percent out-of-wedlock birthrate in the black community and sounded the alarm. All the great gains of the civil rights movement were threatened by the breakdown of the black family, Moynihan warned. He suffered then the fate of the prophet without honor. As the messenger bearing the bad news, he was very nearly stoned. His unheeded warnings about crime, drugs, educational failure have become the collection of pathologies that all Americans know too well. Today, Moynihan’s distinguished public career is honored, but his message is too little heeded.

What is driving these menacing numbers? Why are 40 percent of American children being deprived at birth of their fathers? By the time they reach age 18, fully 60 percent of young Americans have seen their mothers and fathers break up. This comes either from divorce or from the breakup of cohabiting relationships. Or it stems from never-formed families. How can the young learn commitment if their parents remain uncommitted?

This lunge toward a 40 percent out-of-wedlock birthrate is the sign of a culture unraveling. In its wake will come a blighted future of increasing crime, educational failure, drugs, and poverty. It is not poverty that is driving these numbers; the out-of-wedlock birthrate is driving poverty.

What can be done? First, do no harm. Or do no more harm. We must recognize that federal family planning efforts have contributed to this crisis. All data shows that young people who have multiple sex partners are less likely to marry and, if married, are less likely to remain married. Why then should our tax dollars subsidize a “hook up” culture?

We are shoveling money at groups whose sole purpose is to facilitate out-of-wedlock sexual activity.

Second, we must recognize that religious attendance is positively correlated with marriage, family formation, and family stability. The federal government can never directly fund churches and synagogues, but it can observe the “do no harm” rule.

The administration’s announced plans to tax major givers could deal a crippling blow to religious institutions. These are the primary beneficiaries of larger donations. The administration’s pre-K proposals may not be designed to pry children away from church-based child care, but they will necessarily have that affect. Churches, especially those in inner-city neighborhoods, play a crucial role in helping many fatherless children to escape the snares of a host of social pathologies. Let’s not fire on these ambulances of the poor.

Finally, let’s sustain marriage as a social institution. Too many spokesmen on the left and the right have made marriage a political football. When a libertarian radio talker calls for the state to “get out of marriage,” he is encouraging the further breakdown of the family, the only institution that can supply the needs of children. As Prof. Michael Novak memorably put it: The family is the original department of health, education, and welfare.

For libertarians to call for a laissez-faire policy on marriage is to guarantee a greater role for the federal government in a futile attempt to stave off the disaster of family breakdown and to deal with the predictable consequences.

Family Research Council’s Mapping America project provides the hard social science evidence of the importance of family structure and religious attendance to the national well-being. There is virtually no area of public concern—education, health, avoidance of criminal behavior, abstinence from drugs, even bullying in schools—that has not been studied and reported on by Dr. Patrick Fagan’s project. I urge all concerned Americans to read the study on the Mapping America website.

By taking timely action now, we can reverse these dangerous trends. That, more than anything else government could do, will be the kind of change that will bring hope.

Foundation being undermined
Your referred to churches helping “many fatherless children to escape the snares of a host of social pathologies. Let’s not fire on these ambulances of the poor. “

It appears that is just what Obama’s policies are intended to do. Cripple the churches’ ability to minister to families, especially those with critical needs.

Obama’s policies seem more in line with atheistic thought than that of church es or any faith based organization involved in compassionate helping ministries.

Atheist Matthew Chapman (former Hollywood screen writer) said to the Atheist Convention in Washington, DC.

“…Obviously religion provides something which atheism does not. …If a church works well, a member can get help when he or she is sick or hungry, solace during hardship and grief, and eventually the church will bury them and honor their death. The church takes care of its people. How does atheism compete with that? It can’t…

“The better a country takes care of its citizens, the less religion there is.
I don’t believe atheism can succeed in a country as primitive as this
one now is, …Without gigantic social change, the church will remain the only place where ordinary people can go to find community and equality…

“I’m not saying that atheism as an organization needs involve itself in … [helping people] … it probably shouldn’t, but unless these changes occur, atheism does not stand a chance.”

Chipping away at the Foundatioon
Good article.
Public education is chipping away at the Foundation.
There is likely nothing that would help our nation, our culture as much as getting the federal government out of education. The only reasonable alternative is taking children our of public schools. And the Congress is making sure that doesn’t happen in DC.

Public education is indoctrinating children to believe homosexual behavior is normal and good and right and that homosexuals should marry and adopt childen. It is indoctrinating children to believe that their parents are destroying the earth, it is enlisting them in a green politically correct army just waiting for the call from President Obama’s National Civilian Service Corps.

There is nothing happening in this President’s administration that looks remotely like support for strengthening marriage and the traditional family. If fact, we are told, traditional families are not “sustainable” according to Agenda 21 , the curricula for UNESCO’s Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). Sally Ride has written 2 children’s propaganda books on climate change and she said the kids are teaching the parents. Better find out what the children are learning.

In NC, the legislature is overruling the Abstinence Until Marriage Law that required schools to teach AUM as the primary emphasis in all sex education courses. Comprehensive sex-ed will now be inflicted on students. Parents who do not know the difference should learn quickly.

Think about it!
Has Obama yet gone to church since he was elected President? The answer is a resounding NO! The National day of prayer which is today will NOT have any Whitehouse events connected to it. HR1388 for mandatory volunteerism for our nations youth has specific rules about not being religous while a "volunteer". This could be interpreted to not wearing a cross around your neck. Lets face it this Obama is a "fake"
Christian. This administration is atheist as they come.

Our Foundation is Crumbling
Taken in isolation, these pathologies might seem amenable to corrective political and social actions by the citizenry, but taken collectively, they have the air of Biblical judgement and finality.

And as long as we avoid making the obvious connection between the rise of these pathologies and the rejection of the Lordship of Christ and instead think they are amenable to political or social remedies, they will only get worse.

Abstinence Rhetoric HYPOCRISY
Ballot blasting Kenny said,....
"What is driving these menacing numbers?"
(the last three years 40 percent out-of-wedlock birthrate)

SIMPLE! Abstinence rhetoric.

Abstinence is "not realistic at all," said Bristol Palin, on FOXNews in February, BEFORE joining the Candies Foundation abstinence group.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,495244,00.html

A 2008 study among teens found "abstinence pledges" were ineffective and counterproductive. Teens were JUST AS LIKELY to have sex but LESS LIKELY to use condoms or other forms of birth control. The percentage who took precautions against pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases was 10 POINTS LOWER for pledgers than for non-pledgers.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/1 2/28/AR2008122801588.html

I do agree with Kenny on,
"We must recognize that federal family planning efforts have contributed to this crisis."

Sounds like we save $175+ million easily and aid our children without the worthless abstinence-focused sexual education.

Lonerules only half right
"A 2008 study among teens found "abstinence pledges" were ineffective and counterproductive."

But then fails to point to anything even resembling an answer to the problems. I suspect he is young and/or immature in his thinking.

Correct. "You cannot put new wine into old wineskins" but taking delight in their failure is a sign of spiritual vacuity at best and moral depravity at worst.

History
repeats!

With government handouts why should a person work and if a person does not work they must do something.

That something is to be irresponsible because the government sees to your needs.

This gives people plenty of time to get laid and, so what if a woman (young lady) gets pregnant, the government will provide,

REMEMBER, a government big enough to give you everything you need, is also a government big enough to take everything you have.

DEMONcRAT handouts and all for the vote of the unsuspecting, the future slaves to the government when the handouts stop, and stop they will, obama will see to that. He favors other countries and people over Americans.

Now, don't all you fools who voted for obama feel warm and fuzzy?

It's Too Late with Worldwide Abortions!
Obama's push for worldwide abortions by Executive Order and his voting for infanticide justifies to young people that life isn't sacred and can be easily disposed of into the garbage truck. Google "The Mother's Act" or google http://www.uniteforlife.org and you will see that our government is attempting to pass a law or maybe they have that requires pregnant women to take a psychological test to determine if they are emotionally fit to keep their babies. Children for sale? Babies for sale or for the taking and to do what with them? This is a very quiet and secretive piece of legislation that probably 90% of the American people know nothing about. It also has to do with the psychiatric for-profit profession and the pharmaceuticals as pregnant women have been prescribed Rx drugs during pregnancy and after without being told the side effects according to news reports that have caused them to feel suicidal and homicidal according to the news reports. So, there's more to this sexual orientation push into law then meets the eye, but most people are blind or too lazy to investigate and research or read or question the legislatures.

OVUM OFFICE
Wasn't barry conceived 'out of wedlock'?
Just as illegitimate then as he is illegitimate now.

The Obama Virus
Barry Obama exemplifies what happened in the black community and is now happening in the white majority community. His parents came together and then separated with the purported father, who is eulogized in Obama's book, leaving his mother and the baby to fend for themselves.

That pathology has spread to the whole country and marriage has been diminished even more by the homosexuals pretending that their "marriages" should be treated exactly like a union between a man and a woman.

The destruction of marriage as a union between a man and a woman prefigures the decline of civilized culture. The Muslims, who still believe in legal unions that admittedly encompass multiple wives, are sitting back and laughing at us for they know they will inherit the civilized nations. Unfortunately, gays will not be a part of their civilization.

Ken, very good, but the main.....
.....possible solutions are even harder to grapple with. When a very poor teenage girl/woman has a baby, she essentially has $10,000 of medical bills paid by others (workers obviously) who pay dearly for medical insurance.......often $15-20k per year for family coverage. Right? Why should she get $10,000 for free, to have that baby? This starts the cycle of dependency and govt handouts for her, to even house and feed her baby, right? I'm referring to the poor, single mom cycle.
My idea, then (which will never happen) is to put strings on her handouts. If she and the father don't pay for her $10,000 delivery, then she'll have to pay some consequences.......to discourage her from doing this again. Her life for the next few years should be, yes still aided by the taxpayers, but should be an ascetic one, with minimal handouts, but just enough to be sustained for living. You see where I'm going with this. It has to be an obviously undesirable lifestyle........but instead, our "govt" entities hand out too much.

The Blind Leading the Blind
Let's just say what needs to be said. The government has interfered in family relations because children have no self identity when growing up in a matriarchal society. This provides "sheeple". It's time to get the homosexuals and neurotic women out of politics. They have contributed nothing but weak kneed policies and a free for all mentality. This made room for a usurper whose third world background intends to murder.

Simple
Family structure has broken down because there are no penalties for sexual promiscuity. Its simply a case of why buy the cow when milk is free. Maternal and relationship drives are powerful in teen age females, who are totally ignorant in how to handle either. Our culture no longer educates or supports these girls in their quest to grow up successfully. Boys the same age are totally irresponsible, incapable of being responsible even if they wanted to, and at the peak of their sex drive. Understandable but dangerous folly is rewarded more and punished less, so it increases. What is so strange about this?

Dysfunctional Society in America

The truth is we live in a Dysfunctional Society in America.

Dysfunction = abnormal or unhealthy interpersonal behavior or interaction within a group.

Albert Einstein stated that "Man must cease attributing his problems to his environment, and learn again to exercise his will - his personal responsibility."

Former President Clinton grew up in a chaotic world of alcoholism and irresponsibility, he could only 'Feel Comfortable' when he created chaos and dysfunction around him.

President Barack Obama was raised in a dysfunctional and chaotic family with NO father figure and his only male role models were Frank Marshall Davis (devout Communist) and Jeremiah Wright a 'hate filled' black separatist who hates America.

Clinton and Obama are the example's of what we are facing today with Liberalism.

These men who are dissatisfied with themselves and the world around them, project that dissatisfaction onto others.

Men and women who are dissatisfied with their natural roles, blame others for their own dissatisfaction - it is that simple.

The 'natural role' of a woman is very difficult - mother, nurturer, wife - many females 'bristle' at that role and wish to be something else, other than what they are.

The 'natural role' of a man is very difficult - father, provider, protector - many males 'bristle' at that role and wish to be something else, other than what they are.

Why?
Quit trying to blame everyone and everthing but the true culprits in this drama. For years I''ve the question: "Why do women sell themselves so cheap?" when they ultimately hold all the power. We can only reestablish matrimony when women decide to forego sex without commitment. Hard to imagine? I don't think so.

Lonerule
With friends like you, the family doesn't need one solitary additional enemy.

Crumbling for decades
Our foundations have been crumbling for decades, but recent events are rushing to destroy any remaining integrity of what foundation is left to support what was once a great nation.

I agree that the cement in our foundation is the family but two other ingredients make up our foundation.

The sand in our foundation is our Constitution that is overtly being violated by our legislative, executive, and judicial branches of our government...in other words we are destroying our foundation from within.

The water in our foundation is the American people. The water is what gives the foundation it's strength. Without the water, our foundation is just a mixture of cement and sand--a mixture that has no strength. If held in one's hand it whould flow through one's fingers with less strength than a sandcastle.

When the water--the people, is added in the correct amount the mixture changes to one that can be molded and formed into a solid foundation.

The people must act now before our house crashes down.

So Right
Bravo, Ken, bravo! This issue needs much more exposure. It is an issue that affects all races and cultures, though the black community suffers most of all. I put as much onus on the girls as on the guys. I worked part-time with two young women who had children out of wedlock. They happily referred to the fathers as "my baby's daddy" and had absolutely no interest in marrying them or even committing to them. Neither of them attended church, either.

We, as a nation, desperately need to return to our roots.

Totally Wrong AGAIN
Wow, talk about Deja Vu. How many times have I seen this article before? Somebody says America is falling apart because the family is falling apart? Didn't they make this same argument in the late 60s, mid 70s, and late 80s? And yet we're still here and society has improved.

This is a classic example of a moral panic. Someone takes a fact and extrapolates wild conclusions with now basis in fact. It also shows a horrendously poor ability to check facts. Here's a news flash, Ken, teen sexuality has gone DOWN over the past several decades. Compared to the late 60s, today's youth is much more prude. Michael Medved himself wrote about it on this very site for crying out loud!

And a lot of these out of wedlock births and teen pregnancies come from areas like Texas, which has the highest rate due to it's total lack of comprehensive family planning.

And if religious attendance is correlated with family, then how do you explain higher rates of spousal abuse in religious families? And how do you explain the decline in crime?

You clearly haven't checked the facts, Ken. You're lamenting about the younger generation like everybody does. It's been going on since the Sumerians 3000 years ago. To keep droning on is to just beat a dead horse. The bottom line is societies, families, and cultures are all subject to change. Just because you don't like where it's going doesn't make it wrong.

that's not why
America is crumbling because our political leaders on both sides care more about themselves than the people they no longer serve. One side wants total power and control of everything and everyone and the other party is about 4 paces behind them.

How different
Would our world be today if we still stigmatized sex out of marriage. Think about it, would there be out of wedlock births of 30 to 70% depending on ethnicity group. That single parented child is more likely to drop out of school, get hooked on drugs and or alcohol, go to jail and have more children out of wedlock.

This "if it feels good do it" society has some chickens coming home to roost!

unwed parenting
The government has taken more and more of our tax dollars to fund P. Parenthoods sexual education programs and responsible sex education which encourages sexual activity. Oh but, You say "they encourage using 'protection' 70% of those seeking abortions say that their birth-control failed them. No form is 100% in preventing pregnancy & very few (such as pills) protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Wh at is responsible about encourageing immature young people (or anyone) that the can engage in sexual activaty without consequences? By doing it young people and older, give in to pressures to be sexually active and increase their activity, thus increasing their risk and pregnancies. It is a lie. Of course, the abortion industry is doing it because the can profit from providing abortions. Yes, the profit hugely, even the they are registered as a not-for-profit organization. Hmm, why is my tax dollars ever going to them under any circumstances? For one, if the believe in their lies, they can fund them out of their profits. For another thing, they have failed miserably with their programs. Unwed births, abortion rates and sexually transmitted diseases are on an ever increasing rise. The societal consequences of abortion are showing up in studies around the world. Increased crime rates, breast cancer rates have doubled(yes, take time to get the facts) due to abortion. Child abuse, tubal pregs also increasing stats(hundreds of %). It is true. You can find out if want to. All in all, if you lib. radicals want these program, YOU pay for them. You aren't helping people and it is immoral to insist on using others money for things that not only do we not believe in but,Don't WORK! We are willing to help people with our own "wealth" but, now the great pretender, wants to cut down on charitable donations and use more of our taxes to fund this failed programs of the radical, left-wing social terrorists.

Jack from VA

Jack wrote: "...And yet we're still here and society has improved."

I am certain you will share with us those ways Society has improved.

A list would be helpful.

No one wants to hear this
I totally agree with this article but the other thing that isn't being said is that, most of this is due to the feminizing of America. Especially the men. While I understand that the early feminists spoke out because of abuse and injustice they saw in the homes during the 1940's-60's, it has gone way too far to the left. Because of the divorce rate and out of wedlock births, men and women don't know what their roles should be anymore. The lines are now so blurred many people, especially our young people, now think that being a homosexual is perfectly normal. This is not what God intended, I guarantee that.

Retired Geek
I think Jack will take a while to get back to us on that!

What is Marriage For?
The question to ask, in order to provide a solid foundation to all arguments about marriage is this:

What is marriage for?

Is it for adult companionship, pleasure, and convenience? If so, then what we have now -- marriage as a purely optional possibility, lightly entered into, lightly gotten out of, completely divorced from childbearing, and extending as a "right" to any number and/or combination of consenting adults -- is the inevitable result.

If the current situation is not desirable then marriage must have some other purpose than merely as a pleasant possibility to facilitate companionship among adults.

In the traditional understanding of marriage, as practiced by every society humanity has ever produced, marriage is much more -- it is a formal, permantent, legal (and often, but not necessarily, religious), bond between male and female that serves multiple functions.

1. Marriage obligates both biological parents to participate in raising their offspring. This drastically reduces the number of children thrown onto the community to be supported via taxes.

2. Marriage obligates sexual fidelity -- harnessing biological drives and channeling them to productive rather than destructive purposes. This drives down rates of both sexually transmitted disease and the depression and other mental problems which plague the promiscuous as they continually form, destroy, and re-form relationship bonds.

3. As a corollary, by assuring that each child's parentage is known marriage improves the next generation's ability to find suitable, un-related mates and the raising of blood-siblings in the same household makes incestuous attraction unlikely. This is biologically healthy for the human species.

...

What is Marriage For? Cont.
...

4. Marriage ensures mutual support through the difficulties of life and the vicissitudes of fortune. Families and extended families assist each other in a myriad of ways that no other community, however well-intended, can duplicate. Friends may have other obligations. Neighbors may not even know each other. But couples, siblings, cousins, and even in-laws are there for each other because that's how families are.

5. Marriage provides beneficial connections to extended family groups. Few things are rarer and more remarkable than for a mere friend or acquaintance, much less a stranger, to help a young couple with the down payment for a house or a car or to provide other financial support to help set a new adult on his/her own feet. Few things could be more commonplace than for family members to do so.

Many people gain their first, valuable work experience that sets them on a lifetime of productive employment in a family member's business. They might not have taken a chance on a completely inexperienced stranger, but since its a nephew, a cousin, or your sister-in-law's sister-in-law the connection makes a difference. The old saying is true -- you don't just marry your spouse, you marry the family.

So we need to recognize that the formation of these social bonds and connections -- things far removed from mere adult companionship -- is part of what marriage is for. Indeed, in many societies, these literal or figurative tribal connections are more critical for the ordering of society than local, regional, or even national politics.

...

What is Marriage For? Conclusion
...

6.Marriage provides for the orderly transmission of both wealth and culture from one generation to the next. The first through financial support AND education while the parents live and through the inheritance of property after the parents die. The second because despite the efforts of government schools and tax policies that often force mothers into full-time jobs children still learn their values at home.

A child raised by his/her married, biological parents is better off by every measure of success than a child raised in any other living arrangement.

Marriage is not for "two adults in a loving relationship". Marriage is bigger and grander and more ambitious. Marriage is for nothing less than the perpetuation of human civilization.

And the social pathologies that accompany family breakdown -- whether this involves never marrying at all or uncommitted marriages resulting in serial polygamy via too-easy divorce -- prove that we need to recapture the proper understanding of marriage if the US is going to survive in any recognizable form.

lets be honest
I live in LA. The hispanic illegitimacy rate is now 50% and growing. This is creating a huge underclass that will drain our nation financially.

A hispanic freind of mine from Mexico noted that illegitimacy in Mexico is almost unheard of, yet when Mexicans immigrate to the US they are introduced to the "joys of the welfare state" and now half are born with no fathers around.

This is the single biggest issue that confronts our nation, yet the political correct leftist media will not touch it because it confronts "oppressed minorities" behaving badly.

Long terms for short thinking...
Yes, it may be deja vu; this problem is not one that lends itself to instant diagnosis and solution. This is an ongoing process, not a singular calamity- though I suspect there may be one in a not too distant future. This is an old liberal tactic when faced with FACTS that are inconvenient; to minimize it as "old news," while assuming a smarmy superior attitude. This contributes nothing to a solution, only points up the speaker's intellectual impotence.

While the fabric is still unraveling, Jack, the key point is that the destruction is accelerating - though I suspect you knew that, despite the dismissive tone of your post. Liberals point out the percentages are only slightly changing (34% to 39%) but what is not evident in your cavalier dismissal and attempt to divert the subject is that the actual amount of enabling funds has doubled since the 1990's. Financially, each new b*stard (and that is the exact term, despite the norming of society downward) costs the taxpayers almost twice the amount in constant dollars it did two decades ago. This trend cannot be sustained. The societal costs of successive generations of men being raised by women unwilling or unable to form a commitment with a man are, and have been quantitatively established over and over.

Jack's comment reminds me of a man in a burning building who when told it is on fire, does not deign to leave, because he has already been told.

You pay for teen sex decisions
although you are nowhere near them.

They produce high numbers of STDs, preg., abortion, depression, suicide, and single parenting:

and it produces high numbers of drug use, school drop out, crime, unemployability all freuent results.

And are people happier over all for all the sexual activity?

Not in the taxes we pay and social disruption we have.

I doubt all this is worth it so a few teen boys can get their selfish rocks off.

I mentioned this yesterday...
and I wake up this morning and find it the headline on worldnetdaily.com ---the title reads, "HOSTILE BLOGGERS FACE FINES, JAIL?". The Obama administration announces they need to shut-down the internet or tax it heavily, and low and behold, they now just want to put you in jail for speaking. Put you in jail for freedom of expression. Here comes the Gustapo!

Dick,
I've been asking that same question for ages as I've seen classmates, workmates, and relatives flit from relationship to relationship and being taken advantage of again and again and again.

If a man hasn't PROVEN that he's the right guy for forever, if he hasn't PROVEN that he's committed to you by putting that wedding ring on his finger, if he's not the one you are willing to harness yourself to for the rest of you life why on earth would you let him into you bed?

What on earth is a woman THINKING when she moves in with a guy -- becoming dependent on him for food and shelter while cooking, cleaning, and catering to him -- while leaving him completely free to walk out when someone else catches his eye?

Feminists called marriage a prison but as a result of their actions young women have become mere concubines and mistresses rather than honorable wives whose husbands are bound to them and to their children with mutual, reciprocal obligations.

Girls -- instead of offering yourselves as whores so cheap you don't even expect to be paid, have some standards!

And by the way...
Jack, the deterioration of marriage and family was NOT a big topic in the sixties and early seventies. Not so much even in the early eighties. The "Great Society" programs only came to life in the late sixties, a way of helping minorities to cope with their self destructive lifestyle choices. (And buy the eternal underclass vote.)

Senator Moynihan was prescient in that he understood that government assuming the role of father/husband/breadwinner only if the man was not around would lead to the wholesale abandonment by men of their families. This turned out to be the base of the present problem- basically, we paid men to inseminate and leave, and wonder of wonders, they did. One of the few times a government program actually worked... of, course to the total detriment of the individual (no change there) and society as a whole.

At the time, it was considered "gloom and doom" thinking that the programs would encourage this behaviour. Senator Moynihan got in real trouble for wondering aloud if the behaviour would spread from minority groups to the mainstream. He was openly vilified for suggesting. "...whites would stoop to that animalistic behaviour."

"Ya gets what ya pays for," to subvert an old saying.

Jack,
You are completely missing the point. When people issued those warnings in the 60's and 70's and 80's THEY WERE RIGHT!

Today's social pathologies -- rampant out-of-wedlock births, the total disintegration of the black family in the urban environment, the increases in child abuse and child neglect that result when large number of kids are in households with teen and adult males who are not blood relatives, etc. -- are the direct result of the social trends you're trying to pretend don't matter.

Because people like you dismissed the early warnings we're in the 3rd and 4th generation of family dissolution. There will come a limit where American civilization simply cannot stand.

"Abstinence Rhetoric"
Here's a little comparison. When Patrick Moynihan concluded his findiings in 1965, black illegitimacy rates were only about 24% and abstinence was the predominant philosophy that was taught. Today, black illegitimacy rates are at 70-80%, and "safe sex" predominates in today's pedogogy. So yea, I guess abstinence education is the problem.

I'm going to sound
really old-fashioned but we need to teach our daughters what girls used to be taught. That they should value themselves enough to demand a commitment before they have sex. Young women need to stop having sex outside of wedlock period. This would immediately lower the rates of illegitimate births (there will always be some). We need to bring shame back in our culture -- we have no shame anymore for behavior that in previous generations would have been shocking. Boys need to be taught to revere and protect women. Girls also need to be taught to value the masculine roles of protector and provider. And no-fault divorce needs to be done away with once and for all.

Spot on!
Mr Blackwell Is spot on. It is so refreshing to read something that correctly identifies one of the greatest plagues of our day. Great Societies always fall when the individual members of that society no longer take personal responsibility for their young.

Birth problem
I agree with you that this is a growing problem that is doing great damage to our country. I would like to ask, though, if you were able to sift this information through the reports I've heard of the lowered Abortions?
Unwed births are still a problem, but we don't want to change the good news about abortion. Can we not somehow promote adoption, especially among child mothers? And if we can, we must be vigilant about who is adopting. Not, (please God!) to Gays, "married" or otherwise.

Mother of 4
Please, it would be as bad if women had just made themselves into mistresses and concubines. They have made themselves receptacles. A hooker deserves more respect as she gets paid. We have created a generation of young women with so litlle self-respect that there is now a hook-up culture and junior high girls go to those lipstick ring parties (I can't remember what is called exactly). No wonder men don't respect women or stick around and commit.

Bill
Obama going to church does nothing. It takes him at least 20 years to hear the message.

Obama lies, the country dies.

Obama lies, the country dies.

Obama lies, the coutry dies.

Mr Blackwell
You left the reservation with your comments that the gov't should be involved in marriage. Otherwise, you and I have acheived the 80% agreement required to be of the same mind.

God ordained marriage - no legislator gets to redefine it, overrule God, or be involed in any way other than respecting it. This aplies no matter what we wish gov't would do to protect marriage, dissolve it, or apply restrictions and licensing to it.

It is, once again, and again, and again - outside the scope, boundaries and constitutionality of our federal servants to interfere or legislate on marriage. They can call civil unions marriage if they want to. But because marriage is a right bestowed from our creator, who does not respect homosexual unions - marriage of gays will never be the = of man-woman marriage. You can't legislate God to accept it. The intent of any politician to conceive of trying is very telling.

Why Marriage? (part 1)
Mother of 4 is asking a very pertinent question. Marriage is a unique and very special institution. It's very much worth asking, why would a society have such an institution?

Consider the power granted by marriage. It's a lot more than a "commitment ceremony" -- a declaration of really, really, good friendship.

Marriage grants various rights and privileges, such as hospital visitation and control over medical decisions when the patient can't decide for him- or herself.

Marriage grants automatic inheritance of property and custody of any children born in the marriage. By default, each partner is granted the right to use the other's property.

These are actual legal rights that accrue upon marriage.

Why marriage? (part 2)
Another astonishing privilege is immunity to coerced testimony in court. A person cannot be compelled to testify against his or her spouse! This privilege is not available to parent/child or any other family relatonship. The only other area where this privilege exists is in certain professions, such as doctor, lawyer, and clergyman, and then only when actually acting in a professional capacity. Why would this be granted to "really, really good friends"?

Immigration rights accrue with marriage. A partner who's a U.S. citizen can prevent a spouse from being deported. If the spouse resides outside the country, he or she goes to the top of the list for immigration, bypassing any number of obstacles. Why should anyone have the right to pick a "really, really good friend" to bestow this privilege upon?

Marriage creates in-laws. It doesn't just bind together the husband and wife, it creates a whole set of in-laws: mother and father in law, and some number of brothers and sisters in law. Why should a pair of really, really good friends be able to bind the rest of their families together in this fashion? (Granted, this doesn't seem to have the force of law, but its an extremely strong tradition in our culture.)

Advocates of redefining marriage reject the notion that marriage is about reproduction. They want it to be nothing more than a matter between two consenting adults. But if that's all it is, why involve the government, the families of the consenting adults, legally required witnesses, and indeed, you and me as we are legally constrained to observe the rights and privileges granted to these consenting adults?

The privileges granted through marriage are huge. Reason demands that they carry inherent responsibilities to the culture, otherwise there's no reason to support it in our legal system. Supporters of same-sex marriage have been dancing away from those responsibilities. That's the last thing they want to acknowledge.

Karl
Those rights can be granted by civil unions as well.

In-laws
N.B.: I'm not a lawyer. All I can say is, "As Far As I Know" in-laws don't acquire any legal rights or obligations toward each other as a result of becoming in-laws. But since I'm not a lawyer, my legal advice is worth just what you paid for it.

Any lawyer reading this who knows differently is welcome to chime in. I'd be interested to hear.

Barack Obama 'Epitome of Arrogance'

Barack Obama spent over 20 years in a 'Hate Filled' church.

Barack Obama had his children baptized in this 'Hate Filled' and racist "Church".

But, Barack Obama won't take time to visit a Prayer Group on the National Day of prayer, which was declared by Congress in 1952.

Barack Obama's message is coming through loud and clear - time for everyone and everything bu his declared faith.

Real Solutions for Out of Wedlock births
As a product of a broken home, I experienced first hand the very simple and straight forward difficulties regarding broken homes. Mine was a fairly ideal situation as far as such things go, but there was very real jealousy and resentment from both my biological and step parents alike as my very existence complicated their lives. I have met folks with much worse experiences as well.

Real solutions though will have to include a culture that does not cause our children to have to wait until they are 25 to get married and have a chance at being able to afford family life.

LuLu, yes, but...
we have a huge "hip-hop"(rap) culture that teaches young men that women ain't nothin' mo than b*tches. And they should be used and treated like the b*tches they is. I don't get it, because that "hip-hop" crap ain't nothin mo than ice-smoking thug music. The message in all hip-hop music is always, "You f*ck wit me and I'll cap yo sorry *ss". Silly ho's! It's the "hip-hop" culture that teaches young, black boys/men(as well as white) that getting educated is "trying to be white". They promote stupidity. They cherish ignorance and foolishness. To that culture, learning is stupid. And all women are whores. Life is rejected, Death is celebrated. If your daughter listens to "hip-hop", you better watch out. Because she's letting the boys get the best of her. Move out of state if you have to. Is your daughter not worth it?

There is NOTHING cool about hip-hop
unless you are stupid high-school drop-out, a whore/sl*t or a drug-dealing gang-banger. That about sums up the entire hip-hop culture.

Joey
I think you nailed it.

LuLu
I was listing stuff on Craigslist.com the other day, and, for the pure enjoyment I clicked on the "women seeking men" site. What I found was disgusting. These "women seeking men" talk like little trashy sl*ts. One after another. I read from some women-seeking-men who posted things like "no women, strictly d*i*c*k here!" and "I just want someone to sleep with", and "take me to the bed and let's have a good time!", and "looking for a lover". They all sound like prostitutes and dirty whores. They have zero respect for themselves, and I feel the same way.

Civil unions and rights
Fuzzy:

Some of those rights can be granted by civil unions. I don't know if any civil union law has granted anything like the spousal privilege in court. Can one member of a civil union be compelled to testify against the other?

And, I don't believe in-laws are specified in any of the laws regarding marriage -- it seems to be purely a cultural phenomenon. That means, if the families of people joined in a civil union are going to accept each other as in-laws, they have to accept that civil unions bind them together the same way marriages do. I don't know if that happens with civil unions today.

Again, I'd love to hear from anyone with specific knowledge on this point.

When Governments Decide what is human

Remember when, the National Socialist Party in Germany decided Jews were NOT human?

Remember when, the Communists in Russia decided Non-Communists were NOT human?

Remember when, the Supreme Court in the USA decided Blacks were NOT human?

Remember when, the Supreme Court in the USA decided babies were NOT human?

Remember when, Barack Obama decided babies who survived an abortion, separated from their "Mothers", were NOT human?

It's the ethnicity, stupid
What Blackwell doesn't point out is that Hispanics, rapidly increasing in proportion to the rest of the country, have about a 40 percent out-of-wedlock birthrate. And blacks always, even 50 years ago, have had a much higher illegitimacy rate than whites. The "family breakdown" we've been hearing about for years is much more connected to race and ethnicity than people wish to know.

As for religion, believe it -- there are plenty of screwed-up dysfunctional religious families, female- or male-headed. I don't want the government promoting religion as an Rx fro allegedly ails us. I don't want a traditionalist "nanny state" any more than I want a Leftist one.

Although it looks ethnic
Although it looks ethnic, I think its something/hope its something else. Having just moved from south carolina where this is a phenomenally huge issue, it is a how low is the bar and who can we blame besides ourselves issue. I would go to neighborhood meetings and listen to them complain to the school board about how bad the education was. I would stand up and say how well is your child doing in school? Do you go to parent/teacher conferences? The board member said in the school in question that only 30 parents showed up. There were 200 there to complain. They always had an excuse why they couldn't go. I told them there is a direct relationship between their kids grades and how close their foot was to their kids behind. Pregnancy is the same thing, the uneducated just let their kids out not knowing where they are and what they are doing. I honestly don't know what the answer is but it isnt throwing more money at the school system.

Poor Logic
I personally prefer to see people be married when they have children, and have been appalled and saddened at the effect of divorce on children, or what happens to them when their single parent has serial live-in boyfriends or girlfriends. That said, I challenge the logic of Blackwell's statement "We cannot be a superpower abroad when we have a crumbling family structure at home". (The word "crumbling" might be applied to this logic.) I take the word "superpower" to be about military strength and economic and moral influence on, even control over, other countries. Let's take this apart.

First, let's look at military strength. It doesn't make sense that a good husband and father makes a better fighting man than an unencumbered single man---the opposite might well be true and could be argued. Second, our military family population has a hefty share of domestic abuse, divorce, extramarital pregnancy, domestic debt, and other aspects of questionably-healthy family strucure. So are we talking about only non-military families setting a good moral example to the rest of the world, or what?

Third, look at moral example. When our national honor has been so stained abroad by some of our tactics (how about carpet-bombing Vietnamese villages with old people and children in them, or imprisoning indefinitely un-proven Iraqi "terrorists" who have then been tortured by a government that lied about the existence, frequency, and extent of the torture)---when we do all of that, why would the world give a damn about our family structure? And what has one to do with the other?

To Joey
Craigslist has been challenged in the law for it ads soliciting to provide sexual services. This was a big issue a few weeks ago in Cook CO IL (Chicago area)---Craigslist got in trouble--- and I saw something on TV yesterday about---I think it was---North or South Carolina doing the same thing.I wonder whether maybe other jurisdictions may be taking on Craigslist. I haven't googled this but I bet you could find something.

To Shirley
If you google you may be able to find details about this. A few years ago the state of Florida celebrated the best "Foster Parent of the Year", a male professional nurse who knew how to give the medically-required care of children dying of AIDS. He took in a number of them and loving nursed them in the last weeks and months of their young lives. BTW, he was a gay man. So why would you ask God to grant (as you have done in your post) that this man not be allowed to adopt, say, disabled children? He sounds as if he would be unusually committed to and skillful at caring for them. Personally, I would not want the job, nor would I know how to do it---but I am straight. Does that qualify me?

lilly
I have served, but I'm also dedicated to the truth, so here goes.

I believe Blackwell's point was not who made a better fighting man per se, married or unmarried. I think you can make a compelling case for both sides- unmarried men are usually younger and more vigorous, while married men may (but not always) be older and know why their fighting. I believe he was saying that a traditional family represents the foundation of our society, and our ability to project power must necessarily be hindered by its disentigration. It seems to be axiomatic that stable families, by and large produce a higher percentage of stable, productive citizens.

For your second point, you're right about that- there is a high percentage of what you described; probably higher than you know. I can tell you that if we had more numbers of stable families, the military could stop spending resources on this front and devote them more towards what we're trained to do. I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience I saw tremendous amounts of resources (mostly positive) devoted towards helping families. The military realizes that a man (or woman) unencumbered by family difficulties will be that much more effective. I believe military families reflect general societal trends, to a degree. Therefore, if society had more stable families, then military families, which are representative of them would be more stable as well.

As for your third point... A complex question of bombing reduced to a sound bite, not to mention a questionable premise. Bombing completely 'peaceful' villages? Doubtful. Sending men in on foot to clear said villages greatly increasing the risk to their families? Try telling that to the soldiers' families and making that decision. It needs to be done sometimes, but I don't envy the commander who does. Torture and indefinite detention? Read the laws of land warfare and the Geneva accords. Saying the government lied? Needs more proof.

Thanks for your post.

There's more to it
I agree with much of what is said in this article. Fact is: our foundation has been crumbling for some time and there are a lot of reasons for it. I will give 3.
1) Our children in school are not taught that they are special members of God's creation. Rather, they are chance by-products of an evolutionary process that stands on much theory and little proven fact. So their sense of self worth is devalued.
2) We are too often told our birth is due only to a physical interaction between a man and woman. With that in mind, there are no morals or religious values involved. Now, substitute economics and/or personal situations around pregnancy with a government yielding to pressure that some pregnancies "just weren't meant to be" and you end up with our abortion laws.
3) Movies, television, and all forms of media entertainment are filled with messages that family and Christians are to be mocked and belittled. At the same time, the message is: serve your self, do what you want, engage in meaningless relationships as long as you are satisfied.
What do we expect?

Why is anyone surprised?
What's happening in the US has already happened in Europe:

-Effective, cheap birth control has reduced the fear/risk of pregnancy and eliminated one of history's barriers to female promiscuity.
-Rampant promiscuity, which really took off in the 60s, eliminated one of history's major motivators for men to get married...no wedding ring, no sex. Why buy the cow when the milk is free?
-The shifting culture which has actively sold out-of-wedlock births as an acceptable "lifestyle" choice has completely replaced historical cultural restraints including shame, moral censure, and ridicule.
-Welfare. Yep, it's true. Studies have proven some women are influenced somewhat by the increased availability of various social welfare programs for women with illegitimate babies.
-Decline of religious faith/values. Religion was a huge cultural influence in pressuring people to marry, have children and to keep the family intact. Although most americans still believe in god, they've rejected religion...or at least that portion of religion which they find unpleasant.

Intellectuals are well aware of these trends and are trying to fix it through socialism. Massive centralized govt power combined with a scolding Nanny State to force people to do what's "right". It won't work; hasn't worked at all in Europe and it sure won't work in the US.

I'm convinced the West is in permanent decline and will be surpassed (economically, technologically, militarily, etc.) in the next 100 yrs by the East.

The argument made simple
This will be torture for our trolls to watch, but it will do us all good to revue what the conservative right stands for: the Republic, the Constitution, the rule of law, republicans.

It also clarifies what the left actually is: fascist, communist, socialist, oligarchy, democrats.

I disagree with this 100 percent
"Our Foundation is Crumbling"
=======================

Never
People may crumble who will not stand up for the Founding Principles, but the principles are eternal truths that cannot ever be destroyed.

Only the courage to live up to them is the only thing crumbling

A Relevant Article,
Victor David Hanson wrote about how the left-liberals want to have it both ways about food, energy, and national security today: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MTVmOWQ0MzhiMGZjNDcxN jE4OWUxZDM4YzE1NGFhMzE=

Lefties have the same mindset in regard to marriage issues -- they proclaim to *want* children to be raised in good family situations while doing everything possible to make creating a good family situation difficult.

They go on and on and on about how everything is "for the children" while continually undermining the family and social structures that are actually good for children -- gaia forbid that anyone might have to exercise self-restraint for another's benefit!

And par for the course from people whose collective definition of "liberty" boils down to the "right" to go to bed with anyone at any time without having to deal with any possible consequences of so doing.

Get off your butts pastors
I think the pastors should get off their big butts and get out there and engage the youth. Lazy pastors! Palin must have belonged to a congregation that had a lazy pastor... tend to your flock!

Geek you've got a helluva nerve
I'v seen your hate-filled rhetoric toward anyone who didn't think that McCain/Palin were the solution. you've said yourself - that a person who votes liberal is not a person at all, or is; pick one these, stupid, retarded, insane, ignorant, smells bad. So, don't play the pious card here -- you're just as bad as all the people you harbor your hatred for.
Kudos to Blackwell for a column that makes sense, focuses on an important issue without hurling insults at 75% of the population who think Obama is leading the country in the right direction.

You judgemental twit. I have a very normal, healthy marriage. Many of us don't, but then we have pressure that you civilians could NEVER understand. One of which is people like you who accuse our spouses of "carpet bombing" people when you know NOTHING about war. The media always makes the military look worse than it is. Like citing the homocide rate for Iraq/Afghan veterans 18-25. The headline was how many vets killing people, but BURIED in the article was the fact that the military demographic had a LOWER rate than the civilian population.

Thanks Ken
Good article. One of the biggest targets of so much of the left now is the Judeo-Christian foundation of the Country. Knocking this foundation out destroys just about everything else that American has heretofore stood for.

Lilly
IN FACT more military get divorced AFTER they LEAVE the military and become CIVILIANS"

http://paa2008.princeton.edu/download.aspx?submissionId=816 96
Preliminary analyses for all three stages of the project have been completed.
Linear probability analyses of the entire military population 1995-2002 indicates that
compared to comparable civilians, military men and women are more likely to get
married, and that military men are less likely to get divorced while serving in the
military. Relative to comparable civilians, military women are more likely to get
divorced. However, upon exiting the military, both veteran men and women have higher
rates of divorce than comparable civilians, as indicted in the NLSY-79 using fixed effects
models. Taken together, these findings suggest that the military provides incentives to
marry (for men and women) and remain married (for men), but that once the
servicemembers return to civilian life and these incentives are absent, they suffer higher
rates of marital dissolution than comparable civilians. This suggests that the military may
encourage unions that would not normally be formalized into marriage in a civilian
context, and are consequently more fragile upon exit from the military.

Mr. Blackwell
Follow the Liberals and America Haters and kick God out of every aspects of life in America and this is what you get. Follow Conservatives and America Lovers, and kick God back in, and I believe your nightmare will come to an end. Follow RINOS and America Takers like Colin Powell,John McCain, and Arlen Specter, and you want be able to tell the nightmare from MSNBC.

It has all been predicted
What is happening in our once beautiful and blessed country has been predicted and will happen. I personally don't fight it anymore.
When Our Blessed Lady appeared to the children at Fatima and sent
the world a message in the 'miracle of the sun' where even the atheists couldn't miss it, she said Our Blessed Lord has been offended time and again in this country He blessed in the past.
She said 'our Blessed lord must not be offended any longer, or a greater chastisement will occur.'
When you contemplate how a fifth rated politician from Chicago, Illinois has become the president of this once beautiful country and is doing the things he is doing; that couldn't have just happened. I believe God is behind it all. 'Whom God loves, he chastises' and the chastising has just begun
By the way, Janet Napolitano, I am a rightwing extremist who loves this country. God Bless America!

Can't blame Libertarians
Ken, that's really pushing it. If you really want to start to pinpoint when marriage began to break down as an institution is when it started being treated as a financial and tax construct than a social one. As with anything the government pushes for, you end up with unintended consequences. When looking at marriage statistics, even if you assume every last couple that is atheist ends up with out of wedlock children or divorcing with children, the vast majority of them fall into the categories of highly religious individuals. Religion is clearly not a precursor nor is a state sanction.

With American tax structure and the regulatory environment, there is too much pressure to simply get married for the financial convenience of it. The government has this "marriage at all costs" policy that tends to not care of it is a stable or viable relationship. Remove the various pressures and you remove the breakdown. Simply eliminating the income tax will drastically change the stability of marriage in America.

Marriage is little more than a contract between two consenting individuals. The state is not a father and we are under no obligation to ask the state for permission or pay a dowery for the bride.

As a tree is bent so it grows
In 1980 I wrote letters to the editors, and churches, etc...I gould see the demoncrat party was destroying the moral stability of America..I also know God's impending judgement was coming soon...I knew the abortion, homosexuality and godlesness was not going unnoticed by our Heavenly Father..
We have reaped payment today for being alseep for the last 30 years.
Satan was clever. He had the insane justices of the supreme court deprive the youth of America of any mention of god in the school system...."GET THEM YOUNG".hE ALSO BEGAN THE ABORTION JIHAD AGAINST aMERICAN BABIES. The jihad fight is easier before they are born..Muslims in the meanwile have reproduced of up to 50 per man..
Under the quise of equality satan has caused the masses to believe homosexuality and abortion are both good..God doesn't mind..

It is not above my pay grade... The first commandment God gave man was "Be fruitful and multiply" This outlaws both homosexuality and abortion I guess Obama is not smart enough to understand or maybe he does understand completely and it is Americans who are in the dark..
We have called evil good and good evil so God in his wisdom has seen the most evil man of all and we are calling him good. Apt punishment but believe it, it will get worse.

Blame the Feminists
I blame the feminists who have done every thing in their power to criminalize heterosexual male behavior, destroy marriage, and convince women that they should be justifiably outraged at everything male. At this point, women hold all of the reproductive cards. She alone can decide whether to abort, drop the baby off somewhere, put it up for adoption, or have the baby and make the man pay. The man has the choice of keeping it in his pants or not. Many women don't even really care about the baby, just their own selfish wants (think Octomom). Frankly, I, and I think most men, have lost all respect for and actually fear the "me me me" version of modern womanhood. That's why men men are so hesitant to commit (for good reason). Thanks alot feminists!

Conservative Immorality
We have seen that the crumbling of families and increase of divorce has been a result of Conservative culture which has spearheaded the increase in out-of wedlock child bearing.

Conservatives have been very unfriendly to families by opposing children's health care, keeping the minimum wage at slavery levels, allowing corporations to steal investors funds and default on pensions, but also by failing to adequately regulate at the FDA to protect the health of Americans.

Let's not forget Conservative icons of morality:

*Ted Haggard who cheated on his wife, his family, his church and betrayed God by having meth-fueled Gay Sex.

*Jimmy Swaggert also sinned by wagging his finger at our nation for its immorality while having backroom escapades with the secretary and cheating on his wife.

*Palin's daughter is another showpiece of moral hypocracy with her sin of sex outside of marriage which shows Sarah Palin's was a bad mom.

*Bill Bennet (Mr. Virtue) who is agambling addict, glutton and alcoholic yet is quick to crticize the moral shorcomings of others while continuning his own sins.

Conservative's are also America's Divorce leaders with their infidelity according to the Barna Group. In terms of divorce and infidelity they have a much higher divorce rate than Atheists and Agnostics proving the moral bankruptcy of Conservatism definitively.
Here's the link you check out yourself:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm

Turns out that the most moral Americans are the Atheists and Agnostics and are much more faithful to their families.

W in Colorado and Ruth in Ohio
I could not agree more! I am a woman, but I hear W's cry against feminism, and I too see the judgment of God that Ruth mentions. Even so, come Lord Jesus!

DON'T BLAME ME
I voted for McCain/Palin.

First
Could you be anymore idiotic? Seriously, illegitimate birth rates were far lower in this country before we had much if any social safety net.

It used to be that good girls didn't have sex before marriage, and those that did who turned up pregnant either married ASAP or put the child up for adoption.

Now we have multiple generations of women who have chosen to get pregnant without benefit of wedlock (and it is a choice with birth control not to mention they choose to have sex). Many of these women have children with different fathers and feel no shame.

We also have produced several generations of unbelievably sefish and immature women who are probably unfit to be wives let alone mothers.

W
I see your point. I believe we should go back to common law. Meaning if you get pregnant out of wedlock the man has no say in the raising of the child or if you put the child up for adoption. At the same time, the man is not responsible for one penny of child support.

I, also, believe we should go back to at fault divorce and the guilty party (adultery or abuse) loses all rights to the chilrden, the family home, any savings etc. If we allow no-fault divorce it should work like a contract breach by the party who files -- meaning if they have no legitimate cause they lose all rights to any children, any property, and any other accumulated wealth.

W
>I blame the feminists who have done every thing in their power to criminalize heterosexual male behavior, destroy marriage, and convince women that they should be justifiably outraged at everything male

I agree. I also agree in our endeavor to be "free" sexually like men we have become the object feminists have fought so hard against. I remember a study how female are different biologically- the can't have casual sex. Their body releases the same hormone after sex (in smaller doses) that it does so that we bond to our babies. This is the reason woman suddenly "love" they guy they were having casual sex with. We are not programmed for that like men. Feminism has destroyed all the protections women had by pointing out our differences.

To LuLu in VA
So Lulu,

How do you explain the fact that icons of Conservative Culture from Rush to Reagan, Newt to Henry Hyde, Sweatty Sinner Swaggert to Ted Haggard have been adulters and cheaters against their families and churches? It sure looks hypocritical to most Americans when those who decry the fall of the family and morality are themselves serial offenders of lust and sin.

How do you explaing the Conservative study that finds that Evangelical Christians are America's Divorce Leaders and are much less faithful spouses than their Atheist and Agnostic Counter parts? Read the Barna report for yourself to see the stats:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_dira.htm

To millions of Americans, actions speak louder than words. When Americans witness the hypocracy of Family values Conservatives such as Mark Foley and Larry Craig along with the paragons of vice who have no integrity mentioned above all credibility is lost.

I'll believe Conservatives again when their words meet their actions.

I fear it's all too late
How long has this trend toward family destruction been going on? At least 50 years? The people who lived and live correctly are overwhelmed now by those who worked diligently to destroy our culture. I hear people say "we shud do this" and "we shud do that" but the traditional Americans are now virtually powerless. We are witnessing the REAPING for WHAT WAS SOWN (OR ALLOWED TO BE SOWN). I don't comprehend why bad behavior prevails; I don't comprehend why bad consequences seem to go unfelt (many learn NOTHING from them). Worst of all, there's many who show DELIGHT over the triumph of evil. WHERE did love and commitment and responsibility and sanity GO?

Idiocy ad Hominem,
Being unable to come up with any arguments to defend the social pathologies of family breakdown as good and desirable First is reduced to the idiocy of ad hominem insults.

As if the ability or lack thereof of any given individual to live up to an ideal had the faintest relevance to the merits of that ideal.

The point that First and his ilk miss is simple -- those "conservative icons" who failed to fulfill their marital and moral obligations were WRONG. And no conservatives are offering up any excuses for any such wrongdoing beyond the following, ...

Only one perfect person has ever walked the earth ...

And the howling mob crucified him for it.

Atheism and well being
“The better a country takes care of its citizens, the less religion there is.
I don’t believe atheism can succeed in a country as primitive as this
one now is, …Without gigantic social change, the church will remain the only place where ordinary people can go to find community and equality…

TWO Points

1. Have you looked at the birthrates of these countries - in 2012, the median age in Japan will be 55. All of these countries are in the 1 plus area - not even replenishing their populations. They are paying people in France and Quebec to have children, and the illegitimacy rates in Sweden, Norway and Denmark are higher than here, where we have more poverty. Europe is basically a socialist state, and the orient, while its people are very humble, is not a place I would want to live as a woman.

2. These atheistic countries have taken good care of their people only after they whacked about 200 million people beforehand
(like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Ceucescu, Hojxa, Hirohito, Kim Jong Il, etc.)

It would take between 200 and 2000 years of the worst crime waves in the U.S. to repeat their destruction....

Morality & Christianity
You can have good morals and still not be a Christian, but you cannot be a REAL Christian and not have good morals.
To the commenters who throw up the famous people who have failed, have you ever thought of this? "You can stand in your garage all day long but it doesn't make you a car." likewise so goes the nominal Christian.
When Madelyn Murray O'Hara fought to take prayer out of schools, there were no Statemen present to show that what she did was Unconstitutional. Where were the Statesmen in Alabama when the court forced Judge Roy Moore to remove the 10 Commandments from the Court House? Where were the Statesmen in the States of Massachusetts, California and Idaho to challenge the Constitutionality of favoring one group over another?
There was once a morality in this country that even non-Christians had respect for the Church. That no longer is true. And that is why we have school boards, and even Churches (The Diciples of Christ- Obama's old church who ar toying with the idea of handing out condoms in Sunday School to it's Children.
My God people! State authorized gambling is a sin (lotteries). Dr. Billy Graham said years ago, "If God doesn't punish America for her sins, he will have to apologize to Sodom and Gommorah."
This nation needs to fall on it's knees and confess that we have sinned and ask God to forgive us. If we do, the most of what we are now experiencing now will be greatly curbed. I am not foolish enough to believe it will stop completely at this stage of the game but it will certainly be an improvement to the promiscuity of unfaithfulness in the family of today.

First - in eroding values
What happened to the moral foundation of this nation? Read First's gleeful tirades against conservatives. However, if he actually started naming his "ateist and agnostic" heroes, let's start in Hollywood, First, the word count would require scores of posts to name just a sampling of them.

Then, First, look at your liberal politicians. Edwards is a good current hero for you, isn't he?

Clinton, Kennedy, oh, well...

First and those who hold his views are the reason for the erosion of moral values.

Is he a good representative of the "let government take care of it" crowd, or what?

Not long ago--
It wasn't that long ago when more families were families (man and wife at home), and were very protective of their children, especially daughters. I know that when I was in my teens and beyond, the parents of a girl I was going out with would make it clear to me and the same to my male pals that "you treat our daughter with respect" , Because if you did not, and the parents found out, you ran a good chance of having to physically confront the girl's father or and brothers.
I knew a couple of friends that ran into this problem, and it wasn't pretty. That was more true in the 50's and 60's so I am told. It still should be happening if more families were solid and demanded respect.

So true-
Freddy Krueger got his from a group of Fifties parents. Yeah, I know -you liberal twits out there ready to pounce- it's a movie, but the plot was not unreasonable on its face. Today, good ol' FK would hold a tenured professorship in interpersonal relationships at an Ivy League college and any critics of his somewhat antisocial behaviour would be dismissed as "haters."

Christian Right Pastors $$$
It is about the dollars for some of these big name pastors. Instead of being invested in their congregations, they are making big dollars.

going to church does not stop divorce
here are the divorce rates for Christians

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Baptists have the highest divorce rate of any Christian denomination, and are more likely to get a divorce than atheists and agnostics, according to a national survey.

The survey conducted by Barna Research Group in Ventura, Calif., found that 29 percent of all adult Baptists have been through a divorce. Among Christian groups, only those who attend non-denominational Protestant churches were more likely to be divorced, with a 34 percent divorce rate.

Alabama, with a population of 4.3 million, has more than one million Southern Baptists and a majority of evangelical Protestants. The state ranks fourth nationally in divorce rates, behind Nevada, Tennessee and Arkansas, according to U.S. government statistics.

Barna Research Group interviewed 3,854 adults from the 48 continental states, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percent. The survey found that while just 11 percent of the adult population is currently divorced, 25 percent of all adults have experienced at least one divorce, the survey showed.

Twenty seven percent of those describing themselves as born-again Christians are currently or have previously been divorced, compared to 24 percent among other adults.

Its true. So many Pastor Swindlers out there who take advantage of naive Christians and some are making millions (like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell Sweatty Sinner Swaggert, and Joel Osteen) who are essentially smooth con-men posing as holy men.

Some pastors do plow their profits back into the church. Others (Falwell and Dobson build regressive empires and have tentacles in politics to pervert social progress) Others Pat Robertson just make a fortune for themselves. Others Ted Haggard (spiritual advisor to Bush) squander it on meth and gay sex.

Christians have been burned repeatedly by these con-men and should to avoid conflict of interest problems in the future regulate salaries of pastors to $10K a year to prove that they are really godly men and ward off the rip-off artists who use churches like their personal casino.

Allow Me To Speak For "Jack"
Er, uh, that is, well you see, we are better off because, uh, I mean, you know, there's the Internet, yeah, the internet, and, uh, the new X-Men movie is really cool, man, and, uh, lets see, what else could you want. Cars are cleaner, yeah, cleaner, and we're fighting global warming, and Bush isn't president any more, and I'll get back to you with more as soon as I remove my cranium from my sphincter.

Make a choice
I know many of you love to deny reality but your denial does not actually change reality. The reality is a majority of people are going to have sex outside of being married. Cry, scream, beg, and threaten all you want, it will make no difference. That being said (and true) you need to decide which is more "harmful" to society... single parenthood or abortion? If children being born to unwed mothers is as damaging to society as the author and most of you claim then I would think you would be demanding that any unwed female that get's pregnant be forced to have an abortion. If you feel abortion is the greater evil then I would think you would be happy that so many women did not allow being single make them decide to abort. I know you want your cake (no unwed mothers) and to eat it too (no abortions.) But unfortunately for you that is a totally unrealistic, utopian fantasy. So what's it going to be?

What more can be said?
Those who believe that you can separate God and His ordained traditional family from society and still have a civilized world are naive and hellbent on self-destruction. In a world where I'm number one and there is no number two, other than number one, we have bought into hedonistic self-rape. Those who loathe the traditional family/God based value system are like drug addicts and the drug is hedonistic pleasure at the service and deep commitment to no one but self. Why is america dying, indeed?

Sol_Invictus
I agree. And, I'm not sure why Mr. Blackwell thinks that Libertarians "encourage the federal government guarantee a greater role for the federal government". That is sheer lunacy. Libertarinas want the federal government out of marriage for the same reasons they want the federal government out of just about everything. I've aid it before here, if the republican party wants to be a contender again it needs to stand for three things
1) Less federal government and taxes
2) Strong national defense not based on foreign incursions and preemptive wars
3) Personal liberty.

I could have been a feminist becasue I lived that era, but I never did. My daughter is trying to find a man to setlle down with, but with so many cows, dispensing milk for free, no man is willing to buy the cow, that may need tending, as well. You can blame feminism all you want, I know the truth. My son, whom I raised also, would not take advantage of a woman's feelings with cheap promises he would not keep. But, my daughter seems to come accross men whose words are meaningless, and they just leave behind broken hearts. No, women don't hold the power, not for traditional women: a man has to ask a woman to marry him, not the other way around.

if you look at statistics
for divorce and out of wedlock births, you will find most of the top 10 are red states.

why is that?

i have no answer but it says something about the hypocrisy of those who blame it all on liberals.

Odds are you are more likely to get married in a red state than co-habitate like in a blue state. You are also more likely to have a child than abort it. No, conservative Christian has ever claimed perfection. We leave that up to you christian liberals who keep judging us with the hypocrisy label. See if we were "perfect" we wouldn't need Jesus. THe difference is we keep plugging along trying to keep his standards even when we fall short. We just don't throw them out and claim they are outdated when they don't fit our lifestyle.

copy and paste the link and look at it.

there is an assumption on the part of some conservatives that liberals want to throw things out as outdated.

that is not the case.

we are interested in what works.

for example, if the states that have the highest out of wedlock births only teaches abstinence while the states with the lowest rates teach sex ed comprehensively, than maybe there is a connection.

it one thing to have values quite another to have values that hurt society.

bristol palin is a perfect example.

she was home schooled and taught abstinence only.
now that would seem to be the conservative answer to sex ed.

it did not work.

so who is to blame?

the teenage mother or the parents who taught her so-called values that don't work in the real world.

i am a devout Christian and pro-life but when it comes to some things like sex ed, the simplistic answer of "just saying no" is simply not practical and ends up hurting those it is supposed to help.

U posted more than a few times so I'll give U a *shotgun* response>> SPOT ON!! for the most part..The problem is NOT RACIAL, although it would appear to be at a cursory look.. Around these parts, and I live in North Central WV, whites outnumber blacks by MORE than the National Proportional Average.. I'm virtually sure of that..BUT the Problem is, in my opinion , WELFARE, and the fact that the more *Younguns* the more $$$!! This subsidizing ILL BEHAVIOR has to STOP!! Until SOMEBODY in a position of Responsibility (Not to be confused with Posit of Authority)will we see any MEANINGFUL CHANGE.. We don't need any more EMPATHY!!!! Somebody, somewhere, HAS to stand up and declare: PARTY IS OVER.. CLEAN UP UR ACT!!
C'mon TROLLS, Tell me that's a POLITICAL STATEMENT!! CHEERS!!!

Sir,
I am painfully forced to agree with your assessment. 'Unravelling' is exactly what is happening. The meaning of'Family'has become vague to the point of being anachronistic. Too large a part of society knows the definition but not the value of family. Children are herded into schools where basic morality is avoided at any cost. We have been spiraling down this path to an abyss for decades. It may be too late to turn back even if we chose to do so. It will take a 'revolution of mindset' and focused action to turn this country around.

Two points:
1. Ken Blackwell's thesis makes a strong, but no doubt unintended, case for gay marriage. If marriage is the key to social order then gays must be allowed to marry.

2. If we have to depend jfor social order on belief in the illusions promulgated by the 'church' then we're in worse trouble than Blackwell knows.

>there is an assumption on the part of some conservatives that liberals want to throw things out as outdated.

No, as a conservative there is an assumption that you don't know what the heck you are talking about.

bristol palin is a perfect example.--- WHICH MAKES MY POINT

>>she was home schooled and taught abstinence only.
now that would seem to be the conservative answer to sex ed.

She left school for a few months in which she was was ill. She was not home schooled, nor did her school teach abstinence ONLY. She admits that. Alaska's school system puts focus on abstinence teaching, but are taught all the other goodies that planned parenthood endorses. Thanks for playing. Maybe you should get your news from some place a little less bias.

Lib Notice that AK teaches Sex ed
http://www.kff.org/youthhivstds/upload/Sex-Education-in-the -U-S-Policy-and-Politics.pdf

Even within an individual state, there may be
diff ering policies
governing mandates for education about contraception or
abstinence and instruction on HIV/AIDS and other STDs. In
fact, more states require schools to off er specifi c HIV or STD
education than general sex education. It is also common for
states to have diff erent requirements for students in diff erent
grade levels. These policy distinctions among and within states
are often lost in the larger debate about sex education.
As of September 2002, 22 states require that students receive
sex education and 39 require HIV/STD instruction:15
• Twenty-two (22) states require schools to provide both
sex education as well as instruction on HIV/STDs (AK,
DE, FL, GA, HI, IL, IA, KS, KY, ME, MD, MN, NV, NJ, NC, RI,
SC, TN, UT, VT, WV, WY).
• Seventeen (17) states require instruction about HIV/
STDs, but not sex education (AL, CA, CT, ID, IN, MI, MS,
NH, NM, NY, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, WA, WI).
• One state requires sex education, but not STD
instruction (ME).

Family Security is National Security
"The foundation of national morality must be laid in private families. ... How is it possible that Children can have any just
Sense of the sacred Obligations of Morality or Religion if, from their earliest Infancy, they learn their Mothers live in habitual Infidelity to their fathers, and their fathers in as constant Infidelity to their Mothers?"
