Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Barack Obama allegedly intends to be a transformational president like Ronald Reagan. But now President Obama is raising taxes on businesses and retirees, socializing the largest sectors of America’s economy, and decimating state sovereignty and creativity. This is the polar opposite of what President Reagan did in the 1980s, and reveals Barack Obama as the Anti-Reagan.

There are parallels between 1981 and 2009. When Ronald Reagan was elected, the country was fatigued and weary. The outgoing president was unpopular and the economy was declining. People voted for change in 1980 by electing Ronald Reagan.

But that’s where the similarities end. While there are stark contrasts on everything from their beliefs on national security and social issues to their experience and preparation for the presidency, the controversy around the trillion-dollar spending bill and pork-laden appropriations omnibus show their opposing views on economic policy and the size of government. On taxes, expanding government at the expense of private businesses and individuals, and growing the national government to the detriment of the states, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama could not be more different.

People argue about the top marginal tax rate, which Bill Clinton raised to 40% and George W. Bush cut to 35%. When Ronald Reagan came to power the highest marginal rate was 70%, and he cut it to 28%.

This cut in the top marginal rates spurred capital formation, where people and businesses could accumulate resources to start or expand businesses and create new jobs. It’s how a business goes from five workers to twenty-five. This fueled our surging economy in the 1980s and laid the foundation for the 1990s.

In contrast, President Obama refuses to keep the 35% rate, causing taxes to increase after next year back to 40%. He also insists on increasing capital gains tax (which most people have to pay when cashing in retirement investments or college savings, which means that seniors and middle-class parents will get hit especially hard) by a third, from 15% to 20%. And he also demands new taxes on generating energy (the cap-and-tax program) that will raise the prices on gasoline, coal workers, and people trying to heat their homes.

President Reagan’s administration was the first in half a century where the government share of the economy decreased, as he slashed the growth rate of government while the economy swelled. Mr. Reagan used executive orders and administrative changes to abolish onerous regulations and obstacles to private business, such as abolishing the government censorship regime falsely labeled the “Fairness Doctrine.”

And Ronald Reagan tried to do more. He sought to privatize the Energy Department and the FAA, and to tackle federal spending and entitlements. But the U.S. House was controlled by a liberal Democrat majority, and the Senate never had a conservative majority, thanks to alternating years of Democrat control or moderate Republican control.

Again in contrast, President Obama is doing the opposite. He proposes almost a trillion dollars over the next two years to begin a government takeover the healthcare industry, which would doom us to the same substandard care that other nations have as government bureaucrats start making medical research and treatment decisions that they are utterly incompetent to make. He is also moving to restructure the energy industry, takeover the financial industry, have political hacks run the housing market, and pump countless billions more into the auto industry to pay back the big union bosses.

The final economic contrast is federalism. President Reagan strived to empower our fifty sovereign states. He understood that issues such as military matters, national security and diplomacy must be run by the federal government, but most matters are best left to the states. The best example of this is educating our children, where President Reagan tried to decimate the Department of Education and return control of schools to states and local school boards.

President Obama, by contrast, is using this falsely-named “stimulus” bill to create vast new government bureaucracies in the states, mandated by the federal government and overriding the states’ discretion in many areas.

So the Obama cheerleading squad (the mainstream media) can compare him to Ronald Reagan all day long, but the truth is the President Obama is the anti-Reagan, and his policies will bring us the same unemployment and stagnant economies that exist in the European countries that try these failed socialist policies, rather than the prosperity the real Ronald Reagan brought to America.

Ken
For shame, Obambi is trying to cut farm subsidies and Reagan only increased them.

A year ago, I read “An American Life, Ronald Reagan – the autobiography.” I thought there would be no better way to learn about small government, free market conservatism than from the Gipper himself.

I was shocked to read this on pages 344 and 345.

“Through it all, the farmers who suffered most were those who had been encouraged to overproduce by the billions of dollars available in federal subsidies.”

and,

“In the farm crisis of the mid-eighties we gave farmers more billions than any administration in history. Frankly, I didn’t relish giving so much of the taxpayers’ money away, especially when we were battling to bring down the deficit. But farmers were facing a real emergency, and since government had produced many of their problems, I believed it had an obligation to help bail out the victims, then to work to return farming to the free market.”

Wow, looks like we are still BAILING out the VICTIMS 25 years later. I wish the government would treat unemployed software engineers, like me, with this kind of conservatism. I could have collected a large unemployment check every month for five years and when my job skills had deteriorated, I could be declared a “victim” and President Reagan would mandate an even bigger check, a so-called “bailout” from the federal government, perhaps several hundred grand.

And now, in the year 2009, with farm subsidy handouts and ethanol mandates approaching $35 billion a year, we are well on the way to a free market in agriculture or the FINANCIAL SERVICES industry? The bailouts are only getting bigger.

It's a big shame that the vast majority of these farm handouts go to people who are card-carrying members of the Republican party.

Dear Ken
sorry to hear you are unemployed. I have trouble believing you "wish" for your own bailout, such as that in the farm industry.

No president has ever done everything just right. There's been decisions made that created unintended consequences along with intended ones.

It's time to focus on TODAY. It's time to deal with the fact even we employed people do not have the money to fund the current president's agenda. I wonder what will be read years in the future that could shock you even worse than pages 344 and 345. -- Odds are there will be more than 2 pages.

Our future and more importantly, the future of our children and grandchildren are at stake. The fight, whether dem or repub, is to do what's right. To stand on the principles that made this country great.

Perhaps the farm subsidies weren't right. But at this point, the 35 billion seems to be a drop in the bucket compared to what's on the agenda now.

Make sure to pay attention to the things President Reagan undeniably did right. Pay attention to how polar opposite those things are compared to the current democratic agenda.

Ken Blackwell points it out rightly.

Forget policy issues
Discussing differences in these policy issues is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

This is a philosophical battle.

By what right does the government take our money and spend it for their own agendas?

It is ONLY the power of the gun that enables them to do this. It doesn't matter how large a majority voted for these cannibals. Our right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness is not up to a vote.

Rightfully earned property is not there for the taking except by their immoral force.

That is the argument we should be presenting, not a difference of a few percentage points in the tax rate.

Obama is well on his way to being the worst president in US history and the Dem. Congress is an evil cabal.

OBAMA VS. REAGAN
President Obama and President Reagan are miles apart.

Republicans will never, never admit it but it was Reagan who deregulated everything in sight and brought on the financial crisis we are in today.

Reagan also cut funding for the disabled and the homeless population skyrocketed during his time as President.

Reagan was in charge when 274 Marines were killed in Lebanon.

Reagan lied about the Iran/Conta affair.

Reagan is adored by the right wing, but Ronald Reagan was one of the WORST Presidents we have ever had in the United States.

Can we all agree to put off the who was most responsible for the current situation talk and instead focus on how to fix the problem? What good is all of this talk without a cohesive plan to fix the situation? Everyone is talking about what they want, but no one is saying it. The solution is anti-corruption laws (an amendment would be better). And the tactic is a united (both liberal and conservative together) front. We can get back to the debate on what ideology is better and who is more wrong/awful later. But until the problem, the real problem is fixed the debate is counter-productive. And love the spirit of the Boston Teapot protest, but protest without intent is nothing. You need to have a plan. You need to have a tactic. You need to have an endgame. If you are interested in fixing the problem please email.

Ken Blackwell - Excellent Insight
Ken Blackwell tells the truth in this article. Obama is leading us toward the Leftist utopian dream of state socialism. Trouble with utopian dreams is that they are disconnected from reality. Which is why everyone reading this has lost about 25% of their net worth just since January. The market is doing a daily assessment of the direction of the new Administration and a daily verdict that it is the "wrong direction". So, ignore the DailyKos posters here with their inane comments, and think carefully about if you want your entire net worth to be gone. It will - if the Democrat agenda is pushed much further. Notice that Obama, Reid and Pelosi have not even noticed the market meltdown. They are in full implementation mode - the market be damned. That means every producer, every earner, every rightful homeowner (excludes those who have others pay their mortgages), every believer in the Constitution - be damned. Obama's goal is to replace the Constitution with the Manifesto. And he has conned a lot of people. But those whose brains were not checked at the door, will listen to people like Ken Blackwell, and study the legacy of Reagan, and our founders, and engage in the battle to turn our direction around and head us back toward the Founders.

BTW Ken, I sure wish you were the RNC Chair. You are doing yeoman's work.

The Bottom Line
"The final economic contrast is federalism. President Reagan strived to empower our fifty sovereign states."
*************************
And this is what I see as the bottom line issue. The national government is NOT about empowering the fifty States. It's supposed to be the other way around, IMO. The States grant power to the federal government by permission of "we the people."

Great article, Mr. Blackwell!

Bill
You so wrong. So Dodd and Frank are not in anyway responsible for Fannie and Freddie?
All Hail the State!
All Hail Obama!
What fools

Ken Blackwell :: Townhall.com Columnist
Ok, so remind me why Michael Steele and not Mr. Blackwell was elected to head the RNC?

This is exactly the stuff the head of the RNC should be saying and is not.

Bravo Mr. Blackwell, bravo.

Bill
Really got it bad for the COW, do you?
I guess you weren't at the Chicago Tea Party at Daley, were you?

I suppose you don't care that the porkulus has 9000 earmarks? That would be almost three per page...
And that none of it creates jobs?

And I really get that you do not hold the President responsible for his "No earmarks(9000), No Lobbyists(he hired at least 12), there has been zero transparency, and worse, he hired tax cheats.
Should I mention that his economic policy has caused the stock market to nose-dive or are you going to blame that on Reagan and Both Bush's?
You are a village idiot.

The question:
Is President Obama stupid or is he out to destroy the United States as we know it?

How to Protest
Don't buy anything you don't absolutely need

Dear Ken Blackwell,
Please run for PRESIDENT. You are the new Reagan for our time. You understand the great issues of our day. You speak with intelligence and true humbleness.

Your family upbringing is what our children need to hear and emulate.

I am glad your not the chairman of the RNC, you need to run for Pres.

Jason... re: united front:
Jason's wish will never come to pass. There are two competing philosophies... one that thinks government is the answer and the other that thinks that government is the problem. Even though both major parties tend to prefer federal government "solutions" to letting people work out their own problems, the Republican party, especially as epitomized by Ronald Reagan are associated with the government is the problem philosophy. So if there are 2 philosophies and only one can be embraced at a time, it is only good marketing to try and discredit the other philosophy. Anytime anybody proposes a solution from either camp, there will be less debate over the merits of the proposal and more recollection of how it failed when it was tried before. Unfortunately, the recollections have a way of being revised or taken out of context over time. And there is nobody left to tell what it was like when we were still a mostly free country, whether or not it is relevent to today.

The office of president...
...is certainly a powerful and important position in our country. But we should be more fixated on electing good independent conservatives to congress. After all, that election will be here soon. And collectively, the congress can neuter the president. Maybe Mr Blackwell would run for Congress. Could he win a seat in Ohio?

Wake up, Ohio!
The people of the State of Ohio are blessed to have Mr. Blackwell in our state. How do we 'thank' him? We elect an idiot to the office of governor (who's only positive move was passing a conceled handgun law that makes sense)and a criminal (now removed) to the AG position.

Sen. Voinovich is not going to run for re-elction in 2010. We desperately NEED Ken Blackwell in this seat!

In a rustbelt state, fraught with the corrupt democrat (union bought) leadership and the nut contingent like Dennis Kucinich, we NEED Ken Blackwell to fight for us.

Lastly, I find it exceptionally sad and somewhat racist that the same blacks that voted and railed for obama consistently refer to Mr. Blackwell as an 'Uncle Tom' because he is a conservative. Are you reading this AG Holder? What a F***ing joke.

Answer to Marion's Question...
The answer to your question, Marion, "Is President Obama stupid or is he out to destroy the United States as we know it?" is YES.

Marion
Post #14

Yes.

Roosevelt, not Reagan
zapdoodat - Farm subsidies began in the 1930's long before Reagan was president. Farmers have always tried to get the government to subsidize them or put up tariff walls to protect them.

Blaming Reagan for farm subsidies makes no sense unless you believe in time travel.

But then your last sentence reveals that you are just a partisan whose major concern is that only Democrats get the loot stolen by the government.

Appolo
Can we blame Newt Gingrich?

Yet another, in a long list of Republican Socialist policies, is demonstrated below.

When the Republicans got control of Congress in January of 1995 they took care of some friends.

Cotton Subsidies by year, Texas
1995-----$11,326,513
1996----$192,005,776
1997----$177,186,203
1998----$335,010,715
1999----$511,405,328
2000----$488,484,785
2001----$707,989,054
2002----$583,405,392
2003----$807,291,334
2004----$475,324,635
2005--$1,036,033,167

Total $5,325,462,901

That's 5 billion dollars!

Do you know that most of the cotton grown in the USA is exported. Just look at the label on your clothes for that information. Guess what country is the number one importer of US cotton?

You got it. China.

The US taxpayer is subsidizing t-shirt manufacturing in China. Is that patriotic? Tom Delay's district gets a lion's share of the handouts. Great work, Tommy Boy!

Obama is no Reagan
First thing Reagan did was make all Americans feel like we were winners fighting comunisim beating them economicly like we did was because he lowered taxes not raise them. Secondly Blackwell can win in Ohio I am here and we need him in the Senate. We Americans need to won't to win more than Obama wants us to fail which it seems to me he wants us to do. Wants to weaken small bussines growth and smiles while he says to our faces on tv. He has decided what wealthy is and if you ask someone who makes 250,000 if their I doubt they are they have kids, house a car that all requires money to pay for and now they will be penilized for being sucessfull.

zapdodat
Cotton: At least we are still exporting something. Congress seems to think that we can just buy whatever we need from other countries without needing to sell them anything. Several want to shut down the chemical industry in the U.S. - which exports more than anything else. If you don't have enough money coming in to cover what you buy, it's called a deficiet. But Congress doesn't seem to understand that term.

On the other hand, I do agree with garment factories. I can remember when the last closed here in the state because the companies could get clothes made cheaper in some other country. I've always tried to buy American if I can. The clothes fit better and last longer. Unfortunately I can't remember the last time I found any.

Picture:
Why is it that nearly everything I see a picture of Oblama lately he has Nancy Polousy at his elbow? Are they married now? Or just having an affair?

Zap...
Sadly, republican politicians have done a lot of things that conservative, freedom-loving republicans dislike. You do realize that Delay is gone from Congress, right? You do realize there is no Bush in the White House, right? You do realize that while Gingrich may be trying to keep his irons hot, he is on the outside looking in.

I would remind you that politics, as it is practised today, is about compromise and getting re-elected. Do you care to guess why that is? Perhaps it is because the federal government has grown to such monstrous proportions that it pays very well (especially relative to the work and responsibility) to be an elected (or high level appointed) politician. If liberals and conservatives would realize that the government (or at least the people running it)has become too powerful, then maybe we could get beyond which party is worse and get both parties to elect people who will scale it back. But demagogues will promise the world to ignorant voters and liberals, conservatives, and moderates will continue electing handsome men and women with the best hair and smoothest voices... usually also the most power hungry and self-serving in society with the possible exception of most lawyers and many preachers.

zapdoodat: Blame Gingrich?
You bet we should blame Gingrich and Bush too.

The Republicans started the anti-Reagan revolution that Obama is now completing. The Bushies always hated Reagan. Bush's father said that Reagan believed in "voodoo economics" and then undid the most of the deregulation and tax cuts that Reagan pushed so hard.

the premise is right
Some of the details are misdescribed, but the basic premise here is right. Obama seems himself as like Reagan in having the opportunity to move the country politically, but he is moving it in a very different direction.

That was, of course, the major issue in the recent election. McCain tried to push Reagan like policies, Obama pushed for change. Obama won.

Hopefully we will avoid the perpetual deficits of the Reagan years (although we will start with big deficits both inherited and those resulting from the attempts to fix Bush era mistakes) and the economy that leaves the poor and middle class behind, with the increases in crime, unwanted pregnancy and the like that was the hallmark of the Reagan revolution.

David at 8:22
TO answer your question, Blackwell was not elected because the Republican Party while having some within its ranks who are conservative, are truly not a conservative party and never have been. Even Reagan got behind social security, welfare, and federal involvement in healthcare. Tell me honestly here, how many Republicans do you hear advocating Constitutionality? I mean the real Article 1, Section 8 extremely limited Constitutionality. Think about that.

Excellent post Ethan (of OH)
The most obvious way in which Big Zero has proven to be polar-opposite to the D-grade actor is in Reagan's projecting "we are winners" vs. Big Zero's surrender-monkey (amply proved in Krakow and Ottawa already) mentality.

none of this matters
What's happening while we are bickering about Obama vs. Reagan is that acorn is getting funding in sufficient amounts to make it next to impossible for Republicans and dissenting Democrats to get elected. Add in the welfare state that is being created and the whining is over. Obama is not stupid, he knows exactly what he is doing. When we have one party totally in power and we are close America he will be in line to take over. Americas Hugo Chavez. Wake up people.

Lenard
I'd like to wish there were more education regarding the Constitution, but then I remember that Obama was a PROFESSOR of Constitutional Law, theoretically knowledgeable about the Constitution, and all he can do is complain that the founding fathers erred in not providing for more redistribution of wealth.

Do we think teachers in grade schools or high schools or colleges would do better? 'Fraid not. There are a few conservative teachers who may actually know what the Constitution says and how following its "rules" has resulted in America's ascendance from a bunch of rag-tag colonists to the richest, strongest country on Earth--and in just a couple hundred years!! The rest? "Unions are good and good for us. Corporations--indeed any profit-making business--EVIL. Wealth--even school supplies--must be collected by a benevolent superior and redistributed to achieve fairness."

QQ1...
Keep a close eye on your savings. Inflation or even hyperinflation is a very real and likely possibility given the way government is behaving these days. If inflation comes to pass, savings of currency could be decimated.

Polly...
...there are groups out there trying to get the message into schools about the constitution, free markets, etc. The heritage organization will send you a pocket copy of the declaration of Independence and constitution free for the asking. Mine is well worn and dog-eared. FEE, the Foundation for Economic Education is a good resource. John Stossel, who has a column on TH also has an educational outreach program with resources for schools and teachers. The Heartland Institute is another resource. But parents need to demand that school boards and schools use these resources or it is all for naught.

The Anti-Reagan Controversy Here
Mr. Blackwell's column points out differences. This is informative, however, a few of the posts appear to me to be "Argument for Argument's Sake."

Casting blame never ever has solved a single problem. I'm not denigrating anyone's point of view here. I do suggest that we not point fingers at any one person (President). This has been going on for years and years. Might I suggest that readers take a look at the online article that follows:

"The Return of American Fascism." Link to this article.

http://www.americanvision.org/article/the-return-of-america n-fascism/

Kind regards to everyone!

FeedFwd:
Thanks for the info. I utilize our low value paper money to invest in gold and silver coin. It is the only way to go in my opinion for the reasons that you stated. Take care my friend.

Return of Fascism
Read the article, Dr.Kent. Thanks. The struggle against fascism, utopian socialism, communitarianism, communism and other isms that subordinate the individual to the supposedly benevolent state is as old as time. At one period, the Greeks didn't allow children to know their mothers; they were reared in communes, under state control. That was for their benefits, because the state was better able to determine their needs.
Notice that the Leftist in the US can't get the children away from their mothers soon enough. The state daycare centers are presumably better for the children.
I disagree with you that we shouldn't cast blame. More blame and criticism of FDR's socialist policies, to counter the media adoration of FDR is a good start. Crediting Ronald Reagan for his successful policies is crucial. And most of all, even though Obama's plans were articulated by Woodrow Wilson and others, and even though they are not new, they should be fiercely opposed and defeated.

What you can do
He used the net to get elected by totally ignorant people. We can use it to pass info to everyone we know and possibly remove this person from office before he can do further damage.
Rather than dismissing those who believe Obama is not eligible to be POTUS, read up on it yourself and discuss it with your friends and neighbors. You can find good articles explaining a "natural born citizen" at http://federalistblog.us. Also, there's a great summary of the issue and applicable laws at
http://paralegalnm.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/barack-hussein- obama-a-natural-born-subject-of-great-britain.
Check out the dozen lawsuits insisting that he show proof of his eligibility, which he refuses to do. He refuses to let the American public view his original, long-form, "vault" birth certificate. WHY? Dr Taitz, a lawyer handling some of the legal action, posts at defendourfreedoms.us.
The rebellion against his destruction can start here, with us, just learning about the issue.

Wrat Wrangler
I believe you got it backwards . . .

Red Nan seems to be cracking the whip. Does she wear leather and high-heeled, hip-length boots too. Could be. Works for Obama!

Some Corrections on Reagan
Reagan also increased government spending on defense programs many of which were not needed owing to the fact that the Soviet Union was already well on it's way out of business.

The size of the federal governemnt grew under Reagan, he added a cabinet level department as well as other lesser executive level offices.

Immediately after Reagan cut taxes economic activity slowed. Bill Clinton raised taxes on the top earners and shortly thereafter we embarked on the best decade of economic growth since the 1960s. The influence of the President on the economy via tax ideas is less than clear cut.

B.T.W. retirement money drawn out of IRAs and 401Ks is taxed as ordinary income and not subject to capital gains.

Another difference

if I may, Reagen didn't have a me too congress and senate as comrade Zero has. I suppose Reagen could have done a lot better job of restoring our liberty if he did not have to fight its enemies within at every turn.

We delude ourselves by calling ourselves a free people. We have enslaved ourselves to a self serving, economically fascist government out of envy for our neighbors property. We are now reaping what we have sown.

and there are limits...
...to how much you can put into 401ks and IRAs, especially if you want to receive the beneficial tax treatment.

Defeat Obama

First ... Don't hate your enemy. Hate only clouds your judgement and leads to foolish and useless actions.

Second: Remember, this guy can not function if we take the Senate and Congress away from him as we did in 1994.

What we need to work at is the finding , recruiting, training and electing of good solid rock-ribbed Conservatives, not RINOs, CONSERVATIVES. They must understand that they will be personally, not professionally, personally attacked by the Left and be seduced to the RINO(Dark Side) fold by the Left at the same time. Gifts, dinners, praise from perky Katie Couric, all will be presented to them, and they must be trained to resist the overtures.

It will be hard, and we may not win all in 2010, but we must, for the sake of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren, work to defeat the evils of Socialism/Communism/Facism this president and his administration carries at its heart.

Worh Hard ... Defend the Constitution!

Like Rush, I hope he fails.
Though not just his policies, him as well. Send him back to Chicago where he belongs or perhaps to Kalifornia where he might be more comfortable.
No support here for this creature of evil and neither for his administration.

Yes, telling lies for not admitting that George W. and his cronies did already hand to Obama a completely and absolutely an anti Reagan America, in a form of speech.

Yes, and here comes Mr. Bombastic Rush Limbaugh hoping and praying that Obama will be forced to hand America back to the Republicans to fix America, when it was them that were not capable, more like not willing to avoid for America to become so anti Reagan!

In otherwords, Limbaugh wants an America even deeper down burried in a pit than what the Republican Party under George W. dug it in and handed to Obama. Yes, this is for him conservatism in action. First create the problem than hand it to someone to make it worse, than afterwards, happy to take over!

Yes Ron Paul, should and would sit in the Oval Office, if Republicans had any brains! Ann Coulter, do you agree?
