Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Possible problems with President-elect Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan must be thoroughly vetted. While only a few details are known, one overlooked issue is that it could create a major electoral advantage for Democrats at taxpayer expense. That would be unacceptable for what is being touted as a nonpartisan measure, and gives Republicans yet another reason to oppose it if not restructured.

President-elect Obama is constantly emphasizing the need for Congress to pass his stimulus plan. The details are vague. All that is certain at this point is that it is approximately one trillion dollars and Mr. Obama says it will create three million new jobs.

Government cannot create self-sustaining jobs. Government doesn’t create value; it takes it from us as taxes. While a government job involves work and earns a paycheck, every government job is a burden on the private sector because it takes money away from the people. While some of those jobs, such as military personnel or FBI agents, are essential for our nation, it’s no secret that government is full of countless bureaucratic and wasteful jobs that the private sector can better perform.

Indeed, massive government spending sometimes destroys more jobs than it creates. Every dollar the government takes in through taxes is a dollar taken out of circulation from the economy. It’s a dollar that does not go to your local restaurant, or hardware store, or movie theatre. When government spends massive sums financed through taxes, it can destroy more jobs in the private sector than it creates in the public sector.

The only other way to finance massive government spending is through simply printing more money. Government can do that; it controls the printing press. However, creating money out of thin air doesn’t create wealth. If the money supply rapidly expands while the amount of goods and services being produced declines (the definition of a recession, which America is in) the result is massive inflation. This inflation penalizes saving and investments and burdens long-term financial planning and capital formation, worsening the economic situation.

So whether it’s through massive taxes or massive injections of new money, a major spending bill entails consequences. And when this amount of money is at stake, the sheer size of it could make the consequences severe.

But what may be most objectionable with Mr. Obama’s plan is its potential for political mischief. The first such shenanigans come from earmarks. One of the proposed projects to receive this federal largesse is a museum on organized crime located in Nevada. Doesn’t Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid live in Nevada? Is that the kind of project that requires emergency federal funding? Is it irrelevant that Mr. Reid is facing a tough reelection next year?

Even if the earmark issue is somehow resolved, however, there is another issue that it seems no one is discussing.

A week ago, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, mentioned Mr. Obama says his goal is for 80% of these three million jobs to be private-sector. That means, Senator McConnell continued, that 20% would be public-sector, meaning this bill would create 600,000 new federal government jobs. For comparison, Mr. McConnell noted this would be the size of the entire Postal Service workforce.

Once government creates a job, it rarely eliminates it. Government swells by nature, feeding on tax dollars taken away from private citizens and employers until it becomes a bloated, sprawling bureaucracy.

So if Mr. Obama creates 600,000 new government bureaucrats, those jobs should be expected to be kept around permanently, long after this economic crisis is resolved. After all, eliminating those jobs means laying off 600,000 people. Who wants to take responsibility for that?

But most federal employees, that are not political appointees, vote Democrat. Since Washington, DC is the seat of government, whenever new federal bureaucrats are created many live in Maryland and Virginia. In 2008, Virginia went Democrat for the first time since 1964, and Mr. Obama won it by 130,000 votes. Creating 600,000 new jobs might help cement Virginia in the Democrat column, making it harder for Republicans to retake the White House.

So this bill, as currently designed, has serious flaws, some of which convey a partisan advantage. These must be thoroughly discussed and understood, and any major legislation cannot be allowed to benefit one party in what must be a bipartisan solution.

I have a solution for unemployment
Why don't we give all unemployed people a government job. Then we can have 100% employment and live happily ever after. ;)

Yes We Can - 'Whitey' will pay STEALTH!

Republicans do not have the moral courage to oppose anything Obama wants because he will use the economy as a weapon of defense for any and all socialist/redistribution goals. He has a senate with 59 members who will vote along party lines and 5 Rhinos will give it the 'bi-partisan' stamp it needs.

Let the people get what they want. They wanted change and they got it. When Obama is done redistributing wealth (and to his credit, he said he would), 'Whitey' will have paid for the opportunity cost created by not giving 'blacks' a seat at the table. Barak believes the Warren Court did not go far enough, his economic policies are the beginning of completing what the Warren Court was not willing to do.

Black Liberation has begun - and the new name for it is - economic stimulus package. Over tax the working class (predominantly white) and freely give to community based programs and urban schools (predominantly black).

Give Obama everything he wants! His ideas won the american people's vote. When they finally catch up with his mischief and redistribution agenda - they too will know what the 47% knew on 11/4/2008. Change is all americans will have left when he is done 'saving us' from ourselves.

I can't wait.....
to see 5 or 6 government workers standing around watching 1 worker do the work on the road, bridge, or whatever.

Isn't this what we witness now? Imagine all the "standing around" watching jobs that Obama will make appear with the wave of his magic wand!

RINO's
I for one am ashamed of the "Republicans" that sit and give their congressional approval to Obama. We will remember you all. You are the main reason that for the first time in 34 years, I am a registered INDEPENDENT!

Seven-gun Mensa!...
It's funny to read the imagined political motives that Blackwell sees from Obama's stimulous...The prospect of 'ol Kenny trying to out-think POTUS 44, is downright painful..Let's hope the "kool-aid" drinkers put their cups down and stop this fight before anybody enters the ring...After about a year of this, I'm afraid that Blackwell's head might explode...There's two decent choices for RNC head: Anuzi or Steele. That means we can be sure that the "faithful" will choose their next leader from the other 4 losers..This is the same bunch that thinks that Bush's biggest screw-up was passing the NCLB bill. After another 4 years of weeding out "RINOS" and "CINOS"; we can look forward to booking the next Republican National Convention at the Doubletree Suites in Peoria.

"Stimulus"
"one overlooked issue is that it could create a major electoral advantage for Democrats at taxpayer expense..."

You're assuming that Obama's stimulus is going to work and not, in fact, have a detrimental effect. When we got Bush's stimulus last year, gas prices hit four dollar a gallon. The Fed was pushing that inflation to its highest level to pay for it on top of the other spending going on. Obviously the Fed has let inflation fall, temporarily, as gas prices have fallen, but it won't last. Eight hundred billion has to come from somewhere and the easiest thing for government to do is to print it.

Great column
As usual, the spending will create its own democratic constituency and then Republicans will need to become even more LIBERAL to "keep up," though they forget that they will never win another election in that manner.

What party has the guts to tell the folks in these new jobs that govt. spending must be cut! Prepare for the great inflation and unrest coming our way. The time for revolt is now.

Outlook
When Obama gets into office next week, just imagine with all his promises, all your dreams will come true.

collapse
An economic and social collapse is inevitable. I expect the Union to break up. Anybody else agree?

OBAMA AND ALASKA'S OIL RESOURCES
While the Congress spends billions to revive the economy, it dismisses and ignores one vital resource to alleviate foreign energy dependence.

Remember, one factor that started the present economic downturn was gasoline prices.

While we spend millions on Obama's inauguration, his first act appears to be to give the homosexuals a prize in mandating the end of Don't Ask/Don't Tell. His first act should be to develop Alaska's oil reserves!

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/news.php?id=1603

Reality
"An economic and social collapse is inevitable. I expect the Union to break up. Anybody else agree? "

I do. Think this is why Obumma keeps comparing himself to Lincoln?

And to top it off
The Obama's w/mother in law in tow are going to redecorate the White House at our expense!!!
This is what happens when you elect a Totally Unqualified person to the highest office in the world...Those of us who have worked our whole lives, not living off welfare and Barney Franks freebies are up Sh...creek w/o a paddle...With no where to turn, because by 2012 we will belong to the Chinese, where NOBAMA wants to borrow money to pay his bail out bills from. Democrats are idiots....

I gotta wonder if
he plans to fund Public Allies with some of this money. Can you imagine 600,000 new community organizer types going into the cities and making sure people are aware of every dollar they can suck from the government, especially if they don't work or want to. Just think of all the loyality this will buy the DemoRats.

Did any of you watch some of the DemoRats saying they supported this bailout since Obama had final say on how it was spent. Somehow the fools thought this meant the money would be wisely spent. What tools.

Donna, MD - What's Next?
"The Obama's w/mother in law in tow are going to redecorate the White House at our expense!!!"

What's next? Milk crates, or in NOLA-speak "corner chairs", on the lawn?

Used cars sales people ................
Used cars sales people use the same techniques: vagueness combined with lies! I cannot understand why more of Congress are not used car sales people!

The White House Decorator
Must we spend millions every 4-8 years to redecorate the White House? One of the first actions of Mr. Obama's presidency is hiring a decorator. How much is this going to cost? From where is this money coming? In a recession, I do not want to have money spent to change the drapes and the wallpaper which will be changed again by the next administration. Now millons being spent on the inauguration. Have a buffet in the East Room and get on with it.

Redecoration
Donna,
All of the Presidents redecorate the White House upon moving in. It has nothing to do with Obama being unqualified and everything to do with the wasteful culture in Washington.

George W. Bush spent $42 million dollars for his inaugural celebration, or rather the Inaugural Committee did, and they are planning on spending at least $40 million for Obama's inauguration.

Granted most of the money for inaugurations comes from donations, but it still demonstrates wasteful Washington has become. These are the people that we trust with our money to 're-stimulate' the economy?

We could all have $250,000
which should solve all the ec.'s problems if last summer's *stimulus* krap, the TARP boondoggle, and the current $1 trillion giveaway were given to US heads of households.

FDR created ec. chaos and prolonged the Grt. Dep. until WW II, Japan lanquished in recession all of the 90s, and now we are preparing for another decade of ec. loss with Obamanics.

Maybe by 2010, the public will be tired of unemployment, recession, and the inevitable inflation from the Treasury just printing money, as there's not enough now to provide for all this *stimulus.*

interesting approach
Blackwell's critique of Obama's countercyclical stimulus plan would be more convinicing if Blackwell gave evidence that he understood what a countercyclical stimulus plan is.

Certainly as the stimulus plan gets filled in (the congressional version has more details, and as with any legislation the details will be finalized only as it goes throug both hoses) it should be scrutinized.

But is the Republican policy really going to be that they should oppose any plan that is likely to help people, because people who are helped by the stimulus plan are likely to vote democratic? Way to put the country first.

Lon - I Already Helped AND Will Hose
This morning, I "gave" to the garbage jockeys along with crisp $10 bills to each of them.

They "axed" if I "be" from Ireland because I don't speak "like from around here". Not only did they offend my King's English learned in NOLA-area private schools, they kicked my French and Spanish to the curb.

"the congressional version has more details, and as with any legislation the details will be finalized only as it goes throug both hoses"

God, I hope that both HOUSES are HOSED. "We The People" should supply our garden hoses.

Lon
“is the Republican policy really going to be that they should oppose any plan that is likely to help people, because people who are helped by the stimulus plan are likely to vote democratic?”

If that's your attitude, why don't we just have the Fed print out about $10 trillion in worthless paper money and send it to the entire population. Then, we would all be millionaires! Certainly that would get the Democrats reelected and make everybody joyously happy besides! Never mind that the next 50 generations of Americans would be paying for it. Just so you get yours, you really don’t care, do you?

I Imagine that if the same game were played by Republicans, you would have another whole spin on the idea.

Title actually double-entendre
Also accurately readable as '0bama IS trojan horse', due to his being Soros' "sleeper" president!

Bush enlarged government jobs
The biggest joke in Washington was the rate President Bush increased government size. The Democrats never complained because all that meant was an increase in union size. Republicans tried to be nice to president until the damage had been done. All members of Congress are the ones that allocated the funding for the increase of the federal government. Wasteful civil servant unions well miss President Bush for he increased there numbers in ways they never imagine.

Bacteria - It's "HOOVER"
I suppose that you have a gooberment job. It would be natural.

How are those Farsi and other Arabic language classes working out for you?

Ouch......
"While we spend millions on Obama's inauguration, his first act appears to be to give the homosexuals a prize in mandating the end of Don't Ask/Don't Tell. His first act should be to develop Alaska's oil reserves!"

I see quite a few "Accidents" in the future of the military.....

Stimulus Projects
I believe the biggest problem with the stimulus plan is how to prevent the private sector from stealing the funds. If we act too hurriedly we will have the same situation we encountered in Iraq where American soldiers were electrocuted by faulty wiring by nobid contractors. According to reports some of the largest national contractors stole us blind in Iraq.
Lest we forget,it is the private sector that landed us in the current financial mess. Excessive greed has brought us to the brink of disaster. The Government cannot possibly do worse.

There are plenty of areas in need of investment from failing bridges to an electric grid that breaks down at every snow storm. Improvements to this kind of infrastructure will have lasting benefits.

THOUGHTS ON A GREEK TRAGEDY

.....KEN WROTE: ...

....."Creating 600,000 new jobs might help cement Virginia in the Democrat column, making it harder for Republicans to retake the White House" ...

.....Obama is just following in FDR's footsteps ...FDR's goal was to make the Democrats the dominant Party and he was very successful as evidenced by the awe and respect he gets today as one of our "greatest presidents" ...

.....FDR was a populist demagogue who put millions on the dole and established the Federal Government as Big Momma's Teat ...

.....The Private Sector is the Host and the Public Sector is the leech ...what happens when the leech gets bigger than the host? ...

.....In this drama, who gets to play Hector and who becomes Achilles? .....COLOSSUS

Govt Waste
What this article is about is rampant government waste. The government does NOTHING better than the private sector and in fact relys upon the private sector for much if its successes.

IE........I was meeting with a former government employee yesterday.....

He Said.....Every year we bought new laptops for our employees.....even the receptionists.

I said.....Why?

He Said.....We had the money, and if you don't spend it you lose it. Your budget for the next year drops by at LEAST that amount, if not more. Offsite meetings were always held in incredibly beautiful resorts or cities...you had to spend the money somehow.

Government....good...for.....nothing......

PS.
I love the moonbat responses here.......typical...if you cannot make a point...tear down the person.......or come back with a doozie like....."yeah, well you did it too".......the miserable love company.

Hung Like A Trojan Horse
The government is going to have to confiscate all of the Viagra made to stimulate the economy.

Obama
obamacrimes.com
It is urgent that we American's go to this sight and read the press releace and letter to congress. It was to long to post on this sight.

Please Republican Representatives
Do something right this time. Do not vote for this spending bill. And talk very nasty about it,please. DON'T BE NICE. There are plenty of places in public to discuss the harm it will cause. You don't have to discuss the Socialist Party and it's leaders but you can talk about their bad ideas and you can apologize(and explain how and why you screwed up) for the mistakes you have recently made. And Republicans if you are also socialists go and join the Socialist Party. Get out of ours.

Political Trojan Horse
The “recovery plan” (aka, bailout) and the “stimulus package” (aka, mega load of garbage) is nothing less than an advanced taxing scheme without representation.

The Nation's economy is already in the red and the red ink is being financed by other countries like China. Adding a trillion dollar “stimulus package” is pure idiocy and will place the Nation’s “neck on the chopping block”. There is a very real probability that our economy, and by extension, the country will be completely at the mercy of outside entities, our creditors, and they do NOT have our best interest at heart.

Pandora's Box has been opened wide and panderers of every ilk have their hand out. Moreover, the president-elect has a socialistic mind-set and is not shy in spending taxpayers’ hard earned moneys. This is a recipe for disaster. Bernanke, Paulson, Franks, Dodd, or any of the supposed “oracles” don't know how to solve the crisis and what they are doing to "fix it" stinks of absolute incompetence based on pure guesswork. In addition, there is far too little proper accounting of where and how the moneys are being spent; this is not only gross incompetence but it borders on outright intentional theft.

Joycey- I'm Trying
This former Conservative Republican is now a current Conservative.

And, I am trying to be as "nasty" as possible. In NOLA-speak, "I be a wittier" not "sarcastic" or "nasty" even though there is a lot of nastiness in my criticism.

The problem is that those in Government don't listen to or care what "Smelly Tourists" think. I don't know where you come from, but down here "Smelly Tourists" are considered (for some) as employers. I would imagine that you would classify them the same way.

Joycey
I bet you voted for the chimp twice didn't you?
Bush is a stupid clown who's fiscal and foriegn policy were a absolute failure.

Good Article
Good article; Bush did enlarge the government and with that I didn't agree. Free enterprise and jobs in the private sector will be the only thing that will work.

Enlarging the government any more will not work. Enlarging the Postal Service workforce; what a joke when mailing is going down with our ability to send emails and pay bills on line. These people are idiots and can not guarantee a package delivery unless it has a DC# and or is insured. (I'm still waiting for a priority box sent from FL. on 1-2-09.

Didn't obama promise us to veto any bill with earmarks? Let us see if this is many of the many promises he will keep as the stimulus package waiting for him is just loaded with earmarks and pork.

I pray the unions are broken up, they are killing our larger businesses. But, fear it will only get worse and more unions will come out of this.

Jimmy Carter nearly drove us to the edge and we made it. What doesn't kill us only makes us stronger.

Would love to see Steele as the head of RNC.........Drill and be energy free, tired of paying Iran for oil and others who would love to see us fall on our face.

Just waiting to see if obama will do any of the vague things he promised on the trail, you know he really never said anything except to point out his hatred for Bush, is this enough to make him a good prez?

Worked for FDR
FDR bought a ton of votes. Despite destroying America's ability to recover from the Great Depression, he managed to take 4 easy wins for the presidency. Too many people counted on his New Deal to provide the paychecks.

Not that this stimulus is any differen than the past 60 years. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, HUD, etc all cemented huge voting blocks for the Democratic party long ago. Just continuing the more of the same trend from Mr. Change.

vamtns41
writes, "Used cars sales people use the same techniques: vagueness combined with lies"

Not all of them. There are going to be liars in every industry and job under the sun. At least if you fall for a smooth talking car salesman, the result is a slight overpayment or a less desirable car than you wanted. That is the total extent of their power.

If you expect a car salesman to know everything about how a car was driven and cared for by the previous owner. If you expect them to use a crystal ball to determine the condition of the piston rings, cylinder walls, main bearings, etc. then, you expect what can never be. If you demand answers to questions that can have no accurate answer then, you are demanding to be told a lie. Quite a common occurrence btw.

And, Gore and Kerry would have been better?

The Inventor of the Internet and Global Warming/Climate Change/Global Cooling would have had economic consequences that would have caused even bankrupt California to revolt.

And, after Gore finished with the economy, "the-triple-Purple-Shot-In-The-Arse", the "foriegn" policy of Kerry would have finished off the rest the country.

Selbourne
I have no way to understand how you logically came to your conclusions. You really ought to spend more time in seriously looking at what has happened through other angles rather than just the main stream media and moveon.org. They are very socialist in world view.

very insightful thank you

Tea Party
my favorite thing in the world is tea!

George Soros is like Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes. I don't know if I spelled that right.

The last James Bond movie had it right. Whoever that hidden guy is behind all the evil doings in the world.

I lived north of Lake Ponchartrain for 7 years. I understand something of NOLA. But who can really?

Catch a Clue
Bush tax cut package had a 1.3 trillion dollar
price tag and the Iraq war cost the US another Trillion. Bush added more then 5 trillion to our national debt with nothing to show for it but a housing crises, failing businesses, stock market crash, and runnaway deficits.

I know you Republicans have an attention span of a fruit fly. But under Clinton the housing market was stable, Businesses were prosporous,
the DOW went from 3500 to 10700 and we had surpluses by the end of his presidency.

What will you stupid pathetic neo clowns do when Obama turns our economy around?

Soros fingerprints
Always knew someone else was the puppet master for obama-nation

Call it what it is
Good article. I don't know how many voices it will take or even if being heard is enough. It doesn't take much of an economist to figure out that the trojan horse is economic suicide for our country. But wait - when we stop listening to foreign communication and free the terrorists from Gitmo, isn't that security suicide for our country? When the Freedom of Choice Act and homosexual marriage are the law of the land, that will be moral suicide for our country. No wisdom society in the history of man has ever been able to overcome immorality.

I'm waiting for something that has a glimmer of hope for our country. I will continue to pray.

The truth
Tell me stupid neo clowns did Bush's tax cuts increase manufacturing jobs? Did it help the stock market, did it help reduce our debt.

Tell me when has supply side economic policies worked?

No vetting
It will certainly not be vetted by a mainstream media who worships all things Obama. They are still too busy vetting Palin and Joe the Plumber.

http://libertyshout.com/apps/blog/

Ken, Obama Wasn't Vetted!
Ken, why should the stimulus package be vetted when the DNC and Congress and Senate and U.S. Justices and the entire government refused to protect the welfare & safety of the American people and the national safety of our country in my opinion since Obama was never vetted? To-date, the DNC, Justices, Congress, and Senate refused to do a thorough background check and provide a public confirmation to remove all doubt knowing Obama will take an oath as U.S. President while he's in violation of Article II of the U.S. Constitution, so how can anything he executes into law be legal? (even as a constitutional attorney he swore to uphold the constitution, so this is a slap in the face for every American who must follow the laws including law enforcement who must prove citizenship to work) while the average Joe goes to jail if he refuses to give his name to a police officer. So, why do we arrest illegals and ask legal citizens for identification if the Justices don't uphold the U.S. Constitution and provide proof of identity of a U.S. President? Even Osama Bin Laden, who security said on radio produced a valid audio tape recently inferred that Obama's a Muslim and that he has a Muslim name, so who do we believe anyone that he's a natural U.S. born citizen without the proof? Why bother spending our taxes for the arrest of illegal immigrants? And, why is a U.S. President allowing the government to waste tax dollars for an unprecedented amount of tax spening in the amount of $160,000,000 for a inauguration party instead of using that money to create jobs in America during hard economic times or filling the food banks with food or helping people keep their homes? This is such a sad commentary for our entire country.

Think NationaL Debt
When I hear about government wanting to spend a whole lot of money on anything, that they are not going to pay for out of revenue, I think national debt. An increasing national debt means that those who are now around, are getting basically a free ride, and that free ride is on the backs on those who will someday have to pay the bill. It is pure selfishness, when you want government to take care of you, at the expense of someone else. In this case the someone else, will not be those who are living now for the most part, but those who will be living in the future. And even that is not completely true, since those of us who are around today, pay for that large national debt by the interest that debt incurs. And that interest is like when you keep buying more and more things using your credit card, it just gets larger and larger, preventing you from spending your money on something else. And we already see the evidence of that, when you see that the interest cost to service that debt is the third largest component of the federal budget, and the way we are going to going to someday be the biggest component of the federal budget. I am sure that makes sense to some people, but it sure as heck does not make any sense to me.

The Ultimate stimulus
We the people pay all taxes, and we are the only ultimate source of all tax revenue. Regardless where government initially collects the money, all tax money ultimately comes from us, the people.
Since we the people are the one and only source of all tax revenue:
There should be only one tax to collect all tax revenue.
It should be a single, simple, fair, direct, graduated, individual, full-income tax levied on living persons for each level of government: One Tax and Done.
The best thing that government can do to help the country, the people, and even government, is to repeal all of the many hundreds, or thousands of existing taxes, fees, and charges. These taxes are the federal deficit. These taxes are the high price of everything. These tax eliminations are spending cuts. Every tax that is eliminated is a tax that we the people no longer have to pay. These taxes are the difference between the price we pay for health care and everything else, and the price we would pay if these taxes were repealed. Eliminating these taxes will remove them from the price paid for everything by everyone.
One Tax and Done will provide many benefits to all, even government:
One Tax and Done will reduce the price paid for everything by one-third.
Congress can use the money saved to pay off the national debt. Taxpayers can use the money saved for retirement, college tuition, home purchase, etc., all of which will cost one-third less than they do now. This includes the barrel price of oil.
One Tax and Done will make milk and other essential foods affordable.
One Tax and Done will provide a greatly simplified tax form.
One Tax and Done will let the railroads build fast, nationwide, passenger service, taking the pressure off the airlines.
One Tax and Done will end economic slowdowns caused by existing taxes.
One Tax and Done will give us proper Social Security funding.

Paul & "Spread the Wealth"
Paul, honey-child, when BHO speaks of spreading the wealth, he is talking about INCOME TAXES. BHO can't get around the Takings Clause to get to wealth. Even if he was to look to the Kelo decision on Emminent Domain, what is the value of taking $1? Darling, $1 = $1, not an IOU.

If I decide to never work again nor take interest from my investments, I could live off of my wealth and never pay a falling-dollar's worth in taxes quite nicely, thank you.

If Dumbocrats are so concerned about the poor, why don't they share THEIR wealth or give it away?

Good grief, even the homeless and the shelters are being told that they must leave the DC area during the Immaculate Conception Inauguration. Geeze Louise, and we got criticized for closing the Crescent City Connection after Katrina.

We ARE trying. We kicked Babineaux to the curb and replaced her with the Oxford Scholar, Bobby Jindal. It took a frozen $90K in an Eggo Waffle Box to get rid of Dollar Bill Jefferson. Alas, we are still stuck with "Dropped on his noggin" Nagin, but he's finding himself astew in steaming cow manure.

And, for all of those, who criticize Bush due to the failure of levees, for decades the Dumbocrats have led the New Orleans Levee Board. I can still smell the Dumbo cologne emanating from my nearby table at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse on Broad, which was the unofficial levee board meeting place.

very socialistic...
Ron, your plan sounds a lot like "...from each according to his abilities to each according to his needs..."

Sounds very nice, but it doesn't pass the smell test. It is immoral and given human nature, it creates a motivation not to work, but rather to "free load" and inevitably leads destitution. Ask the Russians. Ask the Pilgrims. Ask the settlers at Jamestown.

If you tax something, you will get less of it. Nobody denies that. With income taxes, you get less motivation to work and less productivity. And if you give something away, there will be more people wanting it. The government inevitably increases demand for health benefits, retirement benefits, education benefits, transportation benefits, nutritional benefits, etc., etc., ad infinitum. And as a result, people learn to suck at the government teat rather than provide for themselves. If I take from you and even if I don't keep it for myself, but give it to somebody more needy, then I am a thief and I go to jail. But some slick politicians with Harvard law degrees and nice hair do it and they get re-elected with the expectation they will do even more. Where is the moral outrage?

Just do a simple calculation for me. Take the total US debt and divide by the number of men, women, and children who are US citizens. Think about how much each of us owes one another (and all the other government creditors) and tell me if you think you have gotten a bargain from the federal government.

furthermore....
Let Paul and Joycey and the others argue whether democrats or republicans are worse. It doesn't matter. They are all tax and spenders. The only difference is who bears the largest burden of taxes and who benefits most from the spending. And the dirty secret is that it is always the politically and financially connected who benefit at the expense of everybody else. It really isn't rich vs poor at all, political rhetoric notwithstanding. That is why politicians love income taxes. It makes it more difficult for those who earn a living to ever become rich and protects those who already have wealth from having to face taxes. And furthermore, it gives politicians an excellent tool for pandering for votes and performing social engineering.

I always believed there are 2 approaches to politics. One assumes people are to stupid and/or immoral to manage their own affairs, so we must identify "leaders" who will tell us what to do, ensure we have our needs fulfilled, and protect us from ourselves. I belong to the other camp that believes that with few exceptions, we are able to manage our affairs honorably and can be self-reliant without government support and guidance from cradle to grave. It amazes me that those (from either party) that choose reliance on government over reliance on self inevitably shriek in horror when the other party gains control. Doesn't that say something?

Rose post #53
You couldn't have said it better. It will be a sad day in America when God is taken out of the picture and the morals of our country are destructive when they should be productive. There is nothing productive about homosexuality. I am not even a against them as my brother is homosexual. Not my place to judge.

We must be a productive country in all aspects.

Who wants ice cream
Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and fifty-two percent of the people reacted like nine year olds. They want ice cream.

The other forty-eight percent of us know we're going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess.

set me straight
So Mr. Blackwell, your problem with this plan is that might give Democrats an advantage? You don't think that all the good for nothing "Republicans(Seriously what is a Republican anymore)" who seem to have no idea about Congress's Constitutionally defined limits in Article 1, Section 8 are giving them a big enough one anyway. Mr. Blackwell I looked at your Conservative Resurgence Plan and saw nothing giving us candidates who will be adamant and unyielding in holding Constitutional government. It's becoming quite clear that the GOP is done, I am looking for a viable 3rd party. The Libertarians won't do it and neither will the Constitution Party, but, maybe the Jefferson Republican party. Any good ideas folks?

You must be either a farmer or a rancher in that you know where milk comes from and the effort in obtaining same. There are only three places to get it: Pull a teat, buy it or steal it. I suspect there are a lot of folks who post here who think there are only two ways to get it: buy it or steal it. Buying it is OK, but a lot of folks think the government should pony up the cash. Stealing it OK too, according to a lot of folks on the left -- all they have to do is take the money from productive folks, some of which pulled the teat.

Contest participation
I know how to fix the electoral issue:

Treat elections like a contest, most contest prevent employees, vendors, and relatives of such from participating in the contest.

All government workers would be prevented from voting thereby ensuring a fair election without any sway from those who live off of or benefit from our taxes.

Response to Maxstake @ 14:48
Even with that change, the title would be a double-entendre!

For Teaparty @ 12:00--you must mean Blofeld (main villain in at least four Bond films--and played by multiple actors including Don Pleasance, Telly "Kojak" Savalas, Charles Grey and Max von Sydow) rather than Goldfinger (met and eliminated in one eponymously-titled film).

Puzzled
Spending usually goes up when the Republicans are in office.

More gov't spending means more jobs for the gov't workers.

Most gov't workers vote Democrat.

????????

Then again, no one ever accused gov't workers of being very smart.

Doug...
I'd be happy if they limited the vote to those who paid taxes, whether they worked for the government or not.

What happend to "trickle up" Economics?
What happened to all of Obamma's rhetoric about "tickle up economics?" This reinvestment package is nothing but trickle down economics. HOwever, instead of the money trickling down through the privately owned enterprise of productive americans, he is proposing that the money trickles down through government spending programs. IF he was really interested in getting the money into the hands of the American worker he'd simply call a tax holiday and let us keep more of our own damn money instead of taking more of it away from us. "These times require sacrifice..." Yeah, sacrifice from everyone but the government! BHO is nothing more than another slimy, corrupt, Chicago-style Politician!

He has NO concerns about the success of the american economy beyond what it can do to provide him with the means to buys votes.

If you are unwilling to give up your cozy job and work outside the economy, then there is still something you can do to express your anger at the socialist agenda that will be implemented Wednesday morning. At 9 AM, email every government office you can find addresses to; call a government office in DC; send a fax to a government office; use multiple tabs and go to as many us.gov sites as your browser allows. Keep at this for as many hours as you can. Spread the word - with thousands of people doing this, we can shutdown the servers and render congress and the whitehouse without communication for a noticeable amount of time. Let them know we won't stand for their socialist program. BUT don't send to or call the Dept of Defense, it is the only vital function of government.
Write in the emails and faxes: "No to Socialism! signed John Galt"

Obama's Inauguration Speech
A Messiah is the supremest thing on Earth. I am God’s lieutenant on earth, and sit upon God’s throne.

I am parens patriae, the politic father of my people.

I shall exercise divine power in America. Like God, I have the power to create and destroy, make or unmake at my pleasure, to give life of send death, to judge all and be accountable or judged by none, to raise low things high and to make high things low at my pleasure.

I shall make or unmake my subjects, for citizens of America are now my subjects. I have the power of life and death, of raising or casting down, and shall be accountable to God alone.

I can exalt low things and debase high things. Like men at chess I can make a pawn take a bishop or a knight.

And to me is due both the affection of the soul and the service of the body of my subjects.

I wish you, my subjects, to carefully avoid these things:

First, that you do not meddle with the main points of government; that is my craft. To do so is to lessen me. I am now 47 years old and I have governed in Illinois for some years and have served in the senate for 4 years. I have accomplished my apprenticeship in government. I shall not be taught my office

Second, I would not have you meddle with the ancient rights of mine as I have received from my predecessors. I should be sorry for my vetoes to be overruled. All novelties are dangerous in the human body, likewise in the body politic and I would be loath to be quarreled in my rights as your Messiah.

Thirdly, I pray you beware of exhibiting any challenges of established law. It is undutiful for subjects to press their Messiah, wherein they know beforehand he will refuse them.

What to do.
Great article! The most important tast now is to speak to the Washington Republican elite in clear concise terms that will prove the case for free market capitalism, individual rights, and personal integrity. We, as Republicans can not defeat our enemies, the Socialists, without defeating those within the party who conspire with them. If, there are Republican's who do not want to adhere to the party platform...then get out of the party!

What a JOKE!!!

You sad disillusioned conservatives have already transferred the GOP MESS, YOU helped create, to Obama!!!

Next comes your 'victim' act.

Lone
It would appear that you have been sleeping for at least the past two years. The Clinton Administration imposed the regulations on banks to give mortgages to people who could not repay them, and when those concerns were raised by GOP senators, the Democrats who received money from Countrywide (Senator Dodd) and the former Clinton cronies who looted millions from the till refused to allow stronger oversight. Then, when the inevitable happened, your alleged journalists at MSNBC and CNN refused to do their job, preferring (like the DEMOCRAT controlled Congress...Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid presided since 2006, and still do) their own political power to the best interest of the country. There is no buck passing going on here...you broke it, you own it, pal.

Stimulus and the Private Sector
Mr. Blackwell may be a Senior Fellow of several impressive sounding organization, but he also seems to be a silly fellow.
He says
"Indeed, massive government spending sometimes destroys more jobs than it creates. Every dollar the government takes in through taxes is a dollar taken out of circulation from the economy. It’s a dollar that does not go to your local restaurant, or hardware store, or movie theatre. When government spends massive sums financed through taxes, it can destroy more jobs in the private sector than it creates in the public sector."
This is such a silly statement. If the government decides to rebuild a bridge over a river, it will employ a contractor from the private sector, hopefully local. This guy will employ local workers who will spend their money in their usual pattern. The only thing changing is the identity of the person hiring the contractor.
Mr Blacwell seems to think that our society exists for the benefit of what he calls the private sector. Actually I believe that a democratic society should strive to create the greatest good for the greatest number and not worry about the private sector.
Take health care. We spend more per capita than any other country in the developed world. The private sector which runs this service claims we have the greatest health care system in the world. But across the board Cubans have a longer life expectancy and a lower infant mortality rate than we have. By every measure of efficiency and effectiveness the government controlled systems in Britain and Europe provide better healthcare to a greater percentage of their citizens at lower cost than our much vaunted private sector.

Dear God, PLEASE let me live a shorter life than the average Cuban.

The Brits and Euroape-a-Dope does not provide better healthcare. I lived there and still have many friends that both pay astronomical taxes AND hop the pond for healthcare.

Only recently, an English woman was forced give birth on the floor because the rationed hospital beds had already been rationed out.

selbourne
Wow!! What a historically ignorant statement.Try comparing your statement to what almost every significant individual in the formation of this country said. If you don't like the form of government codified in the Constitution move to one of those countries and stop trying to change this one. This country is about the individual and thus the private sector.
A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor and bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.
Thomas Jefferson

Selbourne...
Are you saying you would be better off living elsewhere? By all means, feel free to emigrate to Cuba or wherever. You may not be missed.

You are right, the money will still circulate. Mr Blackwell may not have been clear. There are some things more desirable and/or more scarce and hence more valuable. The federal government may indeed provide valuable services and cause money to circulate in the economy. What is not seen is the opportunity cost. How much better would it be for an engineer to develop a more fuel efficient engine than say for a professor to study the mating habits of American Bison? How much better would it be for the government to rebate taxes to all taxpayers to the tune of 300 billion than to give it to prop up failing businesses like Wall Street banks and auto makers. Who's to say? If you are a professor seeking a grant or a Bison breeder, you might feel differently than if you are a research engineer or car buyer. The point is that the economy is incredibly large and complex and it is simply ridiculous to think that the Messiah or even a cabal of brilliant financial and political geniuses can know the answer. Hayak called it the fatal conceit. The way to ensure scarce resources are disbursed in both the most utilitarian and moral way is to allow people to freely offer and bid those resources in the market place. Liberals and those who fear/despise the free market point to the loss of manufacturing jobs. Even noted conservative Pat Buchanan is vocal at how government is costing us manufacturing jobs. Yet the answer seems to be grow government (and government jobs) which produce nothing but hassle for the rest of us.

oh
BTW I don't have the space to refute your lies concerning health care (where in Constitution, anyway?) but why don't you pick up a book by Sally Pipes?

about those jobs...
As long as those 600,000 new jobs are all in the military, I say let's do it!

Cubans are starving
Cubans fear opposing their *leaders* or not showing up for *rallies* because they lose rationing cards and their gamilies suffer.

Where Cuba gets the lib. rep. for wonderful health and ed. is merely propaganda. There's no car on Cuba more recent than 1960. No infrastructure is kept up. Entire cities are disintegrating. Cuba has NO GNP.

The commies took an island with one of the richest ec.'s in the Americas and turned it into a desert with a starving population. In Cuba, you get a quart of milk a week, a loaf of bread a week, and two chickens a month. Young girls go to the docks to sell themselves for meals, to save their families from feeding them. Whadda a socialist paradise.

But as China is drilling for oil off Cuba, Castro, but not the Cuban people, will be getting oil money soon.

As to England's National Health, there are strong restictions on treatment for the elderly. No kidney dialysis or heart operations after 70, which we would think is young. Anyone who wants serious treatment and can afford it, comes here.

And EVERYONE in the US can get free treatment in any ER right NOW, as it is the law to treat for charity, which is why hospitals along the Southern border are going bankrupt caring for illegals.

Now It's The Dems Problem
Starting next week, President Bush and the republicans will no longer have a target on their back. All you whiney Dems will have to start blaming your own for all the problems. Let's hear what you have to say when all the levers of power are being pulled by the Dem majority and there is no one else to blame for everything that goes wrong. Be careful what you wish for. Who cares what happened in the past. The past is over and gone. We are in the here and now. The future looks bleak, but who knows. Maybe Obama can do some good, but I suspect he will be constantly fighting his own in congress to get anything done that will be good for the entire country.

Paul
Hey Paul,What you YOU clowns going to do when the economy goes south under BO - Blame Geroge Bush?

Bush/Obama regime
More madcap spending. Not much difference between these two. Let's hope we can survive until the next election.

Thanks for your post. Well put.

Ms.Aries
shame on you! Is this really the kind of person you want to be? I and I'm sure many others are here to dialogue in a way to better others if but on the political, social level(we might disagree on exactly how), not tear people down, but hopefully tear down false narratives and perspectives, but your vitriol does not do that. Do you want to be treated in the same manner as you seem to think it's okay to treat someone else??

End Of A Rope
If the policies of the Democrat/Republican Socialist government continue, people like me or the people in the government will end up at the end of a rope. Only time will tell.

"The One's stimulus package?
Get out the "KY Jelly" and bend over.
It's going to be painful regardless.

Change?
Mr. Obama promises 'Change', but has yet to define it. As an Independent, I believe that's a dangerous problem.
Mr. Obama is having coins printed with his face on them, yet he hasn't taken the oath of office yet.
Mr. Obama demands money be released to him, but has NO PLAN whatsoever.
Mr. Obama will immediately do away with 'waterboarding', which he defines as 'torture'. Tell me. If your daughter or son was kidnapped and taken to a secret place, and you dicovered that your neighbor - who hates you - knows where your daughter is and what will be done to her, to what length will you go to find out what your neighbor knows?
Mr. Obama will close Gitmo. If you are in favor of that, perhaps you won't mind if one of those 'nice' men move into your home with your family.
Mr. Obama will grant the twenty + million illegal aliens amnesty. Who gets the 3-4 million jobs then?
I can understand loyalty, but it's becoming clear that many of you have lost any trace of common sense. If you love Socialism, move to a Socialist country and find out what it's like to live without Constitution rights. I guarantee you would long for the freedoms you are voting to give up.
I truly wish the President-elect well, but he doesn't exactly promote confidence.
NOTE TO MS ARIES: You stand for everything that Martin Luther King tried to change. You demand your first amendment rights, but resort to name-calling when Mr. Blackwell does the same. If you continue to assume that 'everone' is out to get you, you'll accomplish very little.

obama is not ready
First i would like 2 say its nice to see an african american who doesnt support Obama. I was accused of being racist by fellow democrats b/c i voted republican this time. but there were some solid reasons behind my decision one of which is highlighted here. obama has no idea what hes DOING. He has no plans or even ideas. he condemned Hillary Clinton 4 her healthcare plan in the primaries then adopted it in the election as well as saying he wasnt sure he could have the troops out by 2013 then in the major election promising to have them out in 18 mths! And his voting record or lack thereof speaks 4 itself. he was too busy campaigning to vote and never voted on 95% of the issues he supposedly believes in. Hes more worried about his image than telling the truth. Is that kind of president this country needs? No we need someone w/experience and plans and loyalty to this country not a fraud who cares more about image than the american people . I wonder what kind of man is hiding under that mask? out

The Republican Trojan Horse
Ken Blackwell has it backwards. It is the Republican Party, the party of the right-wing, that has given itself a partisan and electoral disadvantage. By adhering to an outdated and outmoded economic theory, laissez-faire capitalism, it cannot solve the major economic crises of the day. Problems of massive unemployment, inflation, poverty, lack of universal health care are simply left to the unregulated, unfettered market place. What Ken says sounds logical enough, but in practice “trickle down” theory does not work. Chaka Z.

do we need so much government?

Just look back the last couple of yeard, you can redlly see how our government is so, so overloaded.
How did we operate without all the candidate from congress being absent from their positions in D.C.? It's almost inconceviable to calculate what money the TAX PAYERS were charged for their salaries and other expenses that go along with their duties in congress. Their being absent from their congressional responsibilities shows that government can function with many less people. Also think of the many, many staff people involved with each candidate? Every body is cutting employment numbers,so why not government???

First the Republican Party is hardly right wing, it's mostly moderates and of course to disparage those who are conservative in the party, which is a minority, liberals demonize us. Second, and really so many articles have been written at this site showing it so, capitalism is not the problem. We do not have honest to goodness capitalism here because of so many special interest power blocs hindering it. Third, SHOW ME universal health care in the Constitution!!! If you do not like the codified law of this land as given in the Constitution move to another country, but please stop trying to destroy this country through distorted, bloated government. It's really that easy, you're here then go with the Constitution, you don't like what we have there are countries such as England, Cuba,Sweden and Canada. The United States (or any other country for that matter) has never practiced pure capitalism. Our economy has always been a "mixed economy" with some free market aspects and some centralized aspects.

While socialism has it's flaws, capitalism has it's own faults too. The best compromise has always been a balance between the two, using the strengths of one to mitigate the flaws of the other.

Bush's policies over the last eight years pushed this balance too far towards capitalism, allowing banks to create the Collateralized debt obligations which started this whole economic mess. If it takes a more socialist approach to restore balance to our economy, then I'm all for it.

How can they not print money
Where can the government hope to borrow an extra trillion dollars in under a year? To attract that kind of money,it would take higher interest rates which would work against economic growth.

The dot com boom was based on a gamble by investors that companies in the dot com related businesses would grow forever. Whoops! The real estate boom was was the government's fault. Had the government pushed down interest rates and and nothing else, the boom would have come much slower, but on more solid ground. What we did not know was that the government was forcing lenders to lend to unqualified buyers so everyone could own an affordable house. But the combination of low interest rates and unqualified buyers created a situation where the were more buyers than sellers which drove up the price of real estate. So much for affordable housing. It all fell apart when prices peaked and they could no longer hide the condition of Freddie and Fannie. It looks like ALL the wealth created during the real estate boom has evaporated. Now the government wants to solve a problem it created by printing money. Next time it will not be Fannie and Freddie that go bust, but the US Treasury.

capitalism
Camanintx until we have unhindered free market policies (no, I'm not saying no regulations) how can capitalism be judged in this country? The government sets minimum wages which is not in the Constitution and hinders free market. The government takes our money and has set up an almost virtual monopoly on education which distorts college tuition, and with the teachers unions promotes foot in the door instead of results. What if these teachers really had to compete, and the schools had to compete? Also, our tort system, and the allowance of frivolous lawsuits takes away from free market. I could go on, but please consider but a few examples.

Lenard asks:
What if these teachers really had to compete, and the schools had to compete?
---------------------------------------------
Wouldn't the best teachers then be drawn to the schools which could afford to pay the most? Wouldn't that be schools in the most affluent neighborhoods that charge the highest tuition? So instead of everyone having the opportunity to learn based on their abilities, you have a system where only those who can afford it can get a good education. How exactly is that better?

Whatever validity you may have in your argument,
now is not the time to make it. Obama has to
do something and he has to do it now - thanks

Premature Objections
Aside from the usual mantra of lower taxes, what are the Republicans proposing to creatively offset this nation's extraordinary job loss of 1.2 million jobs last year alone? Many of us are waiting for some fresh, creative Republican ideas, I would be interested to see your specific plans on recovery rather than your rather weak and premature objections to a first draft proposal that still has a long way to go before becoming a bill which Obama promises will be a result of input from both sides of the aisles? Only yesterday Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell praised the incoming Obama team for seeking Republican input on the proposal and working closely with the Republican team.

However, your article was most disturbing in its transparent political maneuvering urging opposition to the plan for POLITICAL reasons. You write, "... one overlooked issue is that it could create a major electoral advantage for Democrats at taxpayer expense. That would be unacceptable..."

If Republicans wonder why life-long Republicans voted Democratic last election, look to your article for evidence. Many of us former Republicans are sick of the Rovian tactics seeking to win an election by any means. I would think, during this incredibly challenging time when we are faced with widespread unemployment, economic plight, and two ghastly wars, Republicans could set aside briefly the "electioneering" for the good of the country, aim at working with the new administration to strike meaningful compromise and foster a more collegial working relationship than what we have seen in the last eight years.

My post wasn't intended to get into a boring tit-for-tat with you; it was directed at those who study basic economics.

WE WANT TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've gone through all of the posts that you guys have written and it seems that all of you are missing something important. Right now there are 12.6 million people who are unemployed in this country who would like one of those 3 million jobs that a lot of you are against creating. There are also 25.2 million underutilized workers out there who would also like a shot at one or more of those jobs, and I happen to be one of them.

I have been out of work and looking for any job I can get for six years now. SIX YEARS!!!!!!!!! To hear some of you guys tell it, it sounds like you don't want people who are in my situation to have a job!!! What, would that not fit into your precious ideology? Would my having a job prevent some of you from critisizing me for not having one?

Let me bottom line this for you...none of you here seem to be interested in a solution, you only seem to be interested in making the problem worse. Meanwhile guys like me are going to keep networking, keep looking in our local fishwrap, keep looking on Monster and CareerBuilder, keep going to job fairs, and we are going to keep trying to get someone, ANYONE to hire us. Because at the end of the day when the smoke clears, the day is done and the bills are pilled up to the celing, we will still be out here trying to figure out a way to keep our homes, keep the heat on, and keep food in our children's stomachs.

Think about that the next time one of you says that creating jobs is Socialism, or that hiring someone to work is the same as giving them a handout!!!!!!!

In my experience, conservatives tend to study and follow economic thought. Yours may differ.

Joe
Real jobs can only be created where wealth is created. Governments do not create wealth. Governments cannot "create jobs", they can only take wealth from those who've created it and transfer it to those who didn't. Slick politicians can call this scheme a clever phrases like "job creating" all they want--and many in the idiot citizenry may swallow their tripe--but it doesn't change the underlying reality.

If you support stealing wealth from producers and subsidizing non-producers, if you support rewarding failure and punishing success, if you support the forces of tyranny within the government seeking to establish these polities, than just come out and say so--but please spare us the Orwellian propaganda-speak. Not all Americans are morons.

Let me guess, you supported Ron Paul, didn't you?
