GOP Needs a Compelling Vision

In the aftermath of the 2008 election, the Republican Party has begun going through the litany of reasons that they lost. While the GOP must do many things better, the one thing that it must do if it wants to win back power is to put forward powerful ideas that persuade today's voters.

President-elect Barack Obama won a decisive victory over Sen. John McCain. Despite Mr. McCain's extraordinary record and his centrist credentials, Mr. Obama's twin themes of change and hope caught fire with American voters, and will now take him to the White House.

Recriminations are naturally flying around the GOP. Some are condemning this campaign as one of the worst in history, without a clear theme or overall strategy, inconsistent and reactionary tactics, a staff that excluded some of the best talent available, and a woeful lack of organization. Others are blaming the candidate, who despite his exceptional courage, honor and service, ruled certain topics and tactics off-limits that could have been devastatingly effective. Some blame missed opportunities. Some blame President Bush. Others blame Sarah Palin. Many blame the response to the economic meltdown.

But the truth is the only way the Republican Party can regain power is through having better ideas. State constitutional amendments protecting traditional marriage passed in several states, including liberal California. Other conservative measures passed in various states. These show America is still a center-right nation. Voters have not rejected conservative principles, and in fact still favor them.

In one sense, elections are simply mathematics. If the GOP wants to regain power, it must communicate an agenda in such a way that it gets more than half of the voters to vote for it.

The electorate, however, is changing. Hispanics voted overwhelmingly for Mr. Obama over Mr. McCain. The Obama campaign also made gains among Catholics, immigrants, churchgoers, women and young voters. If Republicans want to retake the White House and Congress, they must find ways to appeal to those voters.

Republicans do not need to abandon their principles. Americans prefer lower taxes to higher taxes. They prefer strong national defenses to weakened defenses. They practice their faith and respect other faiths; they support marriage and the Second Amendment; they want strong families and strong homes. Americans also want personal liberty and economic opportunity. The Republican vision of Ronald Reagan can still win elections in this country.

But it can only if those principles express themselves in bold and innovative ideas, ideas that are reflected in a coherent series of specific policy proposals that are persuasively communicated to the voters. The Republicans did not do that in 2008, and lost.

Republicans lost more than the White House. For a second cycle in a row, the GOP suffered massive losses in the House and Senate, and in state races as well. The GOP appears to too many voters to be self-serving and ineffective. This appearance comes from the negligent and even criminal actions of some, actions that betray the principles Republicans are supposed to uphold. These actions are in turn a reflection on ineffective party leadership and a lack of party discipline, which is something the rank-and-file members of the party must remedy immediately.

Republicans will not regain power by becoming Democrat-like. They must instead come up with new ideas and proposals that will appeal to Hispanics, working-income families, women, young people and older people. They must communicate an agenda that effectively addresses education, retirement, jobs, the environment and the economy.

We don't just need better candidates and better campaigns. We do, but those will be insufficient if they are not built on the foundation of better ideas that embody our principles. Republicans lost because they deserved to lose. As a result, the American people have chosen to put the Democrats back in control of all of the levers of power at all levels of government.

That is the challenge facing the Republican Party. It's time to quit whining, acknowledge the problem, and then find a way to solve it. Republicans must offer a compelling vision of the future. If they do, the voters will trust them again and put them back into power.

We already have a vision Mr Blackwell...
and it starts something like this:

Robert is correct....the GOP is finished as a party, and they can go the way of the Whigs in 19th century as far as I'm concerned, and take the RINO martini-sipping fossilized, deflated-football leadership with them.

However, conservatism is here to stay...and as such....the small momentum for the "new conservative party" (NCP) must pick up steam. There should not be anymore "reaching across the asile" to people who despise what you are and stand for....no more compromises of principles to the leftists. Younger, invigorated leadership must begin at the grass roots level...and play the Demorats same game AGAINST them....massive voter drives, proper utilization of MASS COMMUNICATION, no public campaign financing...etc..etc...

When demo-rat policies and consequences of those failed policies come to fruition in the next few years....then conservatism and principle will reassert itself in this nation.

Stop bigotry
First it was blacks, then hispanics, now Muslims. If we carry out this simple-minded outgroup bias, we will again be in the wilderness for another 40 years. Let's say it all in unison, including fellow Christians, Muslims are not evil. There's a difference between a fundamentalist and a Muslim; and even a difference between fundamentalists and terrorists.

This is why GOP lost...

US voters are sick and tired of partisan bickering that has produced squat over the years for the betterment of "quality of life" issues. An effective and efficient government machine can only occur with bi-partisan efforts given by all.

Keep pushing that same button and the GOP will continue to be outside looking in during the next election.

Unfortunately, many of your brethren do not feel that bigotry is a problem in the GOP party so your excellent point will probably go unheeded.

What the GOP needs is...
...a serious house cleaning. To purge out the RINOs, moderates, and posers that have abandoned the principles of true conservatism and given us the budget-killing, deficit multiplying mess we are in now. It would be prudent at this juncture to recall the sagely admonition from a voice of yesteryear:

You are correct many including me don't believe bigotry is a problem in the GOP. That is because it isn't.

We are aware that bigotry exists, but its not the government's job to micro-manage the thoughts of its citizens.

Government can help by ensuring equal protection and opportunity. Those laws are already in place.

Bigotry is more of a problem for the Liberal left. Liberals honestly believe that Blacks and some other minorities can not succeed without lowering standards, quotas, and minority set-asides.

The result has been many are reluctant to hire a minority because they don't know if they got their college degree because they actually earned it, or were standards lowered so they would complete college.

I am addressing you as the probable head of the Republican Party.

First, I think you are right on target. The first thing the GOP needs to do is develop a clear, conservative message.

Also, the Republicans need to realize what they are up against. The Dems have no scruples - they fight to win. Read Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" to understand them. Also note that they are going to criminalize political differences by prosecuting members of the Bush administration. The Republicans need to toughen up and aggressively counter attack in an intelligent, strategic way.

Finally, the Republicans need to develop outreach approaches that enable isolated conservatives to become part of a movement and community. Obama is doing this in many ways.

Keep up the good work.

I submit three ideas for you and the bloggers to consider:
1. Everyone wants as control over their own destiny as much possible ... which is why Capitalism is the correct system ... it incorporates the right incentives. Have you ever noticed that all the pols have been and are obsessed with jobs, jobs, jobs? We should instead be focusing on wealth creation through business starting and building, i.e. entrepreneurship. And wealth creation can happen at point in the economic hierarchy! Oh, and (incidentally) that whole process creates jobs.

2. We need to challenge the Left everytime they righteously talk about “taking from the rich to give to the poor”. The proper phraseology is “stealing from the more productive to give to the less productive”. And we shouldn’t let up on that challenging.

3. We need to confront the Left’s use of manipulation by guilt at every turn. For example, there is no objective meaning to the word “fair” ... it is used consciously to disarm an unsuspecting opponent. There is no such thing as “fair housing”, “fair wages”, “fair profit”, etc. The use of the word “fair” in any context implies conformance with some societal norm. All of this reminds me of an article in the NY Herald Tribune a number of years ago by Walter Lippman in which he invented a concept called Society (with a capital “S”) and advanced the notion that we should prioritize our every action so as to benefit that entity ... individualism be damned. By the way, “politically correct” is nothing more than an extrapolation of “fair”. Insist on using “mutually acceptable” instead. I’ve given seminars on the subject and stopped Leftists cold in their tracks by not allowing “fair” to creep into a conversation. Oh, and I don’t know of any objective meaning to the word “greed” either.

WHO LOST WHAT?
Just like major league sports, win or lose, the players are still paid handsomely. It's the 'fans' of both teams, who lose everytime.
The American people, being forced to pay for the political sporting event during the 2 year period of 'practicing' for the 'big game', emptied their pockets doing so. And now, the 'fans' of both both political teams, are going to LOSE THEIR SHIRTS, while the 'parties' go right on 'partying'.

But a Repub. strategy must take into account un-"PC" TRUTHS and not fear to act:
For example:re Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims:
It has become a tribal Third World over here. NOBODY except white people and Native Americans, it seems, feels like AMERICANS first. (Wonder if that is related to the fact that they FOUNDED and DEVELOPED the country.....)

In any case, Blacks have to stop malingering and obsessing with their identity and trying to CHANGE us so that we hate our own Euro roots. Hispanics have to learn English and American History and remember that they are Christians and Americans FIRST and give up their anti-white bias, and Muslims have to give up on ideas of spreading their WARLORD FOUNDED religion rather than attempting the impossible task of repackaging an apple as an orange.
Most of their beliefs run DIRECTLY CONTRARY to American values and beliefs and system of government. It just AIN'T compatible,so becoming a supporter of ISLAM means you are AGAINST AMERICA.
This is NOT to say all should give up their ethnic heritage in private celebration.

No, The GOP needs to take off it's blinders!!!

The GOP has lost all credibility with conservatives and values voters. The disgusting candidate the DNC ran won because of it.

No sugar coating, no excuses..that's it in a nutshell.

Sarah was the best thing to happen in politics since they passed the 22nd article of the Constitution that states no person will serve as POTUS for more than 2 terms..we need an article that says the same for Congress and the Senate as well.

Sarah reminded people that this country was built by the brightest and the best of it's citizens and not the ones with the most clout with special interest backing.

Wake up America, learn the Constitution or lose it..

Bigotry NOT a problem for Conservatives
Repubs don't need to worry about BIGOTRY.

BIGOTRY does not mean realistic criticism, any more than RACISM does not mean honoring ones birth ethnicity.

Issues of race and relligion should be private. Enough has been done by Government to help assure equality of opportunity. Groups that cling to victim status do so to continue to benefit from apportionments and handouts.

Jews don't get handouts and they manage to be very successful through hard work and study, and absolutely NO "Jewcentric" curricula needed. Could that be why they are hated ??

Its MORE THAN TIME for conservatives to stop apologizing for things they are not guilty of.
And it's time for minority conservatives to speak out more loudly about their desire to move on from the politics of entitlement and grievance. Talk about negativity !!!

Conservative principles do NOT mean "bigotry".

What they do mean, however, is putting AMERICA first and acceptance of the Western Civ. ethic this country was founded on.

Some ADJUSTMENT is necessary to join, or become Conservative. One must put TRIBAL loyalties aside, and accept MORE responsability than Liberals, for the outcome of your actions.

SO it's a HARDER to be conservative. And EASIER to hate conservatives.
Attracts more IDEALISTIC people as opposed to IDEALOGUES of the LEFT. The reverse of what people think.

We may indeed be doomed but its a doom with HONOR, a term we don't expect most liberals to understand.

When I had earned my Ph.D., my academic professors said I should accept that no mainstream school would be hiring a white male over minority racial and gender applicants. So I said F-you idiots, this white boy will get as far away from academia as he can.

Obama didn't come up with any new ideas. In fact he didn't come up with any ideas on his own at all. Marxism, socialism and fascism... under whatever name... have been around since the 1800's... and have failed and bankrupt every country that went down that deadend road. And it's the same crap Bush, Obama, Biden and McCain continue to force feed us! So there's no change to it.

Chanting two words "hope and change" is not an idea. They're just two words. Chanting "Yes we can" are just three words. The 5 words combined aren't ideas either.

What this brings to mind ...
is a comparison between the GOP today and the Church, if I may be so bold. The emergent church movement is seeking to refine its methods (not really THE message, we hope) to reach a generation that has been poorly taught by its elders. Same with the GOP and conservative principles. Tinker with the method, if need be, but never the message. We don't need some self-proclaimed illuminati being new messiahs for either. Look to the founders for inspiration and truth.

Why the GOP lost
The GOP lost not because they failed to reach across the aisle, because if you really look at it, they are the only ones that did.
They did not loose because they are conservatives either.
The GOP lost because they reach across the aisle and turn their backs on their base at the drop of a hat. It is hard to tell the difference between Republicans from Democrats from the way they speak. In election cycles, they both sound alike.
The GOP lost because they let Liberals choose their candidate. McCain is only a maverick in the Republican party because he spends more time as Liberal than a Conservative. In the Democrat party, he would be just another Democrat.
When Republicans start standing by their principles both before and after the election, they will find much more success. Sadly, the Republican leadership keeps pushing to the left, not realizing if they are going to the left anyway, why not just vote the left.

Voters have been disgusted with hypocritical Republicans who have outspent tax and spend liberals.

While Republicans lost in Indiana, North Carolina, and Virginia, conservative issues won in California of all places!

When Republicans champion conservatism instead of their selfish egos, they will succeed.

John Boehner needs to step aside as minority leader.

Mike Steele needs to win the RNC chairmanship.

And Ken Blackwell and others of integrity, have to win back Ohio for conservatism.

Listen to the people
They need to quit putting the Ron Paul's and Pat Buchanan's and their supporters down. He said the GOP needs to get back to it's roots. And to be honest he has been more truthful to the people than any other candidate. And the people know it now. As long as the GOP puts people down who want their Republic back and call them crazy and nut cases. They will still lose votes and credibility. People are waking up and see the ideology and hubris for what it is.

Bill Clinton was right ...
... as much as I have to admit it. When the Democrats lost big time last, he said they had to "change their image." People don't vote ideas; that takes too much thinking. Besides who wants to invest all that thinking into one vote that is worth no more than a dunce's?

Neither party has really changed its position on the issues substantially. 0bama won because of his image. And what is the image of a blank slate? Whatever the individual voter wanted it to be.

Article has wrong focus
With all due respect to Ken Blackwell, the party doesn't need to regain control, the country needs to regain sanity.

The reproductive freedom folks have hijacked the word "freedom" and in fact have hijacked the English language.

And the whole nation is coming on board. For example, sexual freedom and sexual experimentation and sexual identity are all expressions of, if truth be told, sexual license. "Freedom of choice" has spilled over into "cultural choice" which translates today to "cultural license." It is not only about sexual license, but a declaration by people who want nobody exercising (any kind of) authority over them: nobody at all. Obama's mantras of "hope" and "change" resonated with a population that wants no authority and all kinds of license disguised in the palatable term "liberty."

Republicans as a party will not be able to overcome such a cultural mindset, no matter how well they package their message.

If we do not abandon our cultural license and turn back to the One God Who gave this country to us and blessed it with abundance, we will lose it. If we do not teach children and adults alike that authority comes from the Divine and is "authored" by the Divine, we will not rescue the nation from herself.

Ain't gonna happen
The GOP is stuck on a few ideas, and unless they shake them, they are doomed.

First of all, you need to get serious about alternative energy. Everyone knows that fossil fuels are unsustainable. Drill baby drill makes you all sound like a bunch of ignoramuses.

Second, you need to shake this absolutist capitalism, all government is bad mentality. France has better healthcare that covers all of it's citizens at about half the per capita cost. Something is wrong with our current model. Something like 70% of the country wants universal health care. Trying to convince them they are wrong is a loser strategy.

Third, you guys need to stop being so arrogant internationally. You need to drop the bully attitude. We need to lead the world by being a positive example of how a super power behaves when it is the sole super power. We need to act with the kindness and maturity of a loving father to the rest of the world. I know that sounds awful to you folks. You'd rather be the bully. But it is an ineffective foreign policy. It doesn't work. It doesn't make us safer or more prosperous if the rest of the world hates us and resents us.

GOP should go the way of the Whigs
When my last choice for the GOP nom went to the biggest lib in the party, I decided to support the Constitution Party candidate, whether it was Chuck Baldwin or Alan Keyes (a vote against Barack-I must be a racist!). When Sarah P. came on board, I thought there was hope and worked the phones for her VP run (Sarah Pa. and that white-haired guy).

Well GOP, if you monitor this blog, you had better take a hard turn to the right and show it clearly by June of 2009, or you have already received my late vote, my last dollar, and my last phone call.

CONSTITUTION PARTY IN 2010
...because I want to pay for MY mortgage
...because I don't want to pay the UAW's pension
...because I cling to my guns and my faith
...because the Constitution is more important than the Party.

Perception
The article, Ken, is great and right on point.

Just as Bill Clinton diminished the integrity of a President by his self-serving interests that gave him sexual satisfaction, so the Republicans under the name of "Conservatism" have diminished the integrity of what they were elected to do. We saw the foot under the toilet wall loss of integrity, the representative using pages for sexual pleasure loss of integrity, and the spend more and big government trend by Republicans loss of integrity.

These forefront and noted actions seen by the "Center Right" voters made us stop and question, are the Republicans any better than the Democrats they rave against? And the resounding answer was no.

This is what the Republican party needs to regain is the integrity of courses of action like "Contract with America" and Ronald Reagan's forthrightness to stand and be honest in making a mistake and then correct it rather than hiding it and acting like the Democrats that are were very able to hide their direct connections with Fannie Mae and Freedie Mac and blame it all on Bush.

We all should be ashamed of the way the media and the leftist Democrats and the right wing Republicans trounced on the President and diminished him for boldly defending and keeping our nation from being attacked again under his watch. I believe one of John Kerry's former campaign leaders wrote of this in the Wall Street Journal. Funny it comes from a Democrat.

And we all should hold the Main Stream Media to account for the complete lack of journalistic integrity it flaunted during and before this campaign. Katie, Gwen, and all the rest should be really held accountable for their lack of professinal integrity, just as Foley was as a representative in his fiasco.


The Rebound Vote
Republicans need to change strategy, that's clear. However, concern over the demographic shift from past elections could be contributed more to "the rebound vote", that a change in principles.

Like a rebound in relationships, it is often emotions-based and a statement or protest to an idea or the person who came before. This election was unique. A candidate of color, economic crisis and an unpopular administration. It would have been a difficult climb for ANY Republican.

Now is the time of opportunity. I'm actually excited to see what our youngest, brightest and most visionary will bring to this party. This change has been a long time coming.

How to re-build the party
Ken; We lost because the croissant and tea croud got a hold of our party, with the help of the liberal press. We had the pussyfied, pantywaist group tell us what we are suppose to believe in. Who were McCain's friends in Washington? Well, let me see. There was Lyndsey Graham, a sheep in sheep's clothing, John Warner, someone who can't decide which side of the bed he can roll out of, Olympia Snow, a woman who would get offended if she wasn't invited to the Washington tea set, etc, etc, etc. It's all too true, you are known by the company you keep. These people who couldn't say $h!t, if they had a mouthful of it. We need to re-build the party from the ground up, but most of all, we need a press that is at least fair when dealing with both parties.

I have to wonder about Americans that voted for two vague words.
I have to wonder about Americans that voted for someone they did not know at all. We don't even know if he was born here. Someone who lies with every breath he takes. Someone that believes in death so much he would rather see his own grandchildren dead than have one of his daughters burdened with inconvienance. Someone who has accomplished nothing except smoking crack and hanging out with unmentionables. But wow he sure looks and sounds like a rock star.
If more than than 50% of this country has gone stupid what are we supposed to do. You can't reason with fools.

First of all taking advice from those who oppose us isn't a recipe for success, so ignoring your ideas or even doing the opposite would probably be most helpful.

Your first point is a perfect example of this. Drill Baby Drill is a powerful message which large swaths of the electorate strongly support. Notice how the dems had to let the drilling ban lapse to avoid ticking off the voters right before the election. Not to worry though, I am sure they will reinstate their supply reduction (in other words price increasing) policy of restricting drilling. While they are at it they will continue to prevent an expansion of nuclear power--one of the most effective sources of energy available. Instead they will seek to pour untold millions into unproved dreams that may or may not actually work.

Contrary to what you seem to think, conservatives and the GOP are not opposed to alternative energy. They are for an all of the above approach. We should pursue all forms of energy. Limiting the supply of proven enegry sources when there is no certain replacement is not a good idea. Entrepeneurs know that there is a fortune to be had if someone develops effective clean energy and are searching for that goldmine. The government doesn't need to help them out in any way other than perhaps reducing their tax burden so they have more money available for research.

Capitalism, like every other system involving humans, has flaws no doubt. The answer is not to abandon or seriously curb the system that has done more to promote productivity and prosperity than any other system. Many of the failings attributed to capitalism have their roots in well meaning, but misguided attempts by government to fix problems. The current financial crisis is firmly rooted in manipulation of the capitalist system by more or less forcing banks to make bad loans. The strength of capitalism is that is takes advantage of human nature. People want lots of stuff and capitalism allows those who work hard to get it. Socialism on the other hand just gives people stuff whether they work for it or not. When the choice is to reward productivity or punish it, there isn't really a choice. Only one will have a lasting positive impact.

Capitalism only is bad if you take too narrow a view. Ups and downs are a natural and unavoidable part of the process, but in the big picture Capitalist systems steadily trend upward. The same can't be said for socialist systems.

They are meaningless if they cannot be communicated or have been so demonized by lies and propaganda that they are dismissed out of hand.

If Republicans really do want to retake both the congress and the presidency, a goal I am not sure they actually wish to achieve, they will in fact need to return to Reagan Era principles.

Mr. Blackwell came up with a total of zero specifics for Republicans. Let me try to fill in the blanks. If Republicans want to offer, as one of your guys once put it in my youth, "a choice, not an echo," then they need make sure they move hard right. Tell the American public that the benefits they expect--Social Security, Medicare, environmental protection, and much, much more--are (a) too expensive to fund these days and (b) morally wrong. Conservatives generally believe both points, but they don't connect this with a presidential campaign. McCain should have posed to the voters the genuine alternative of eliminating all social programs--a position consistent with genuine conservatism.

McCain should have insisted that the campaign focus on restoring respect for biblical religious beliefs and values, and maintaining them with the power of government. He should have stated unequivocally that Republicans have no use for gays and no interest in furthering the gay agenda. He should have said, from the first ay of his campaign against Obama, that Obama was a Marxist, an Islamist, pro-terrorist, anti-religious, anti-American, anti-white, etc. He should not have left attacks of this sort in the hands of bloggers and TH columnists and readers. By the time McCain got around to even saying that Obama was a liberal, it was way too late. Hatred, fear, and loathing should be the watchwords of Republican campaigners. Republicans will continue to lose as long as the party is dominated by social conservatives. These past 8 years of Republican rule look nothing like what conservatives claim to represent. Passing a constitutional ammendment banning gay marriage and making abortion illegal are moral issues which Republicans attempted to ram down electorate throats.

Note that the Republicans have been actively pandering to groups Ken mentioned as supporting Obama: Hispanics, women, older Americans.

This pandering has been directly at the expense of white men, who traditionally vote Republican and are a major component of the Republican base.

Race and gender preferences ratcheted ever upward during the Bush administration, at a serious expense to white men. Race and gender preferences are institutionalized discrimination.

Bush also pushed banks to make loans to illegal aliens, helping to cause the mortgage meltdown.

If the Republican party continues to pander to these same groups and continues to discriminate against white men, it will not regain power. I'm sure we will find that one of the major reasons McCain lost was lack of support from white men. Yes, Obama got majorities in the pander vote, but McCain didn't get the percentage of the white male vote usually gained by a Republican. Because McCain has been a panderer too.

Yes, I voted for McCain, but I would have much more gladly voted for a different Republican. For instance, Palin. Or Tancredo. Or Hunter.

Good analysis and good approach
But I think it is time for the GOP to realize, the anti-gay victories (with their ever-narrowing margins) notwithstanding, that there is a fundamental divide between the theocratic philosophy that wishes to use the power of government to advance a conservative social agenda and the political philosophy of traditional conservatism - a belief in individual liberty, limited government, and free markets.

The first of these paths leads to Christian Nationalism, the statism that we fear in our opponent's policies, the erosion of individual liberty and religious freedom. There are many reasons why the Republicans lost the center this election cycle, but it was not due to the failure of the middle to recognize the value of traditional conservative political ideals. It was unhappiness with the abandonment of these principles by the Bush admnistration. It was fear of the conservative social agenda, and a growing belief amongst reasonable people that the Republican party is becoming the party of intolerance, of bigotry, and that it has abandoned its philosophy of governance and its role as the protector of the individual from governmental interference in his or her life.

The second of these paths is the right path, the message we need to get back to. The Republican party ought to stand for the best way to govern a nation, not to seek to governmentally mandate to people the best way to live their own lives. People who think that only a Christian should be our President should be told by the party leaders "That's not how we think. That's not what we stand for. That's not what the Consitution says." Until we do that, we can expect a lot more elections like this one.

Stop the blame game
As I've said before, if Republicans will pull out their own platform, the Constitution ans a Bible and read them they will find all the vision they need. People love to use the cool, illuminati phrase "going forward" these days. How about looking to our history and foundational documents for the road map first? And quit pointing fingers like little kids.

Let's get one thing straight
McCain did not lose "despite... his centrist credentials," but BECAUSE of his mushy moderate positions that kept conservatives away from the polls. He was impotent to attack most of Obama's positions and record because McCain's own positions are more leftist than conservative.

It didn't help that the corrupt MSM, in a chilling display of partisanship, helped Obama scrub the record clean of his radical alliances and radical leftist voting record in an attempt to portray him as a generic, moderate Democrat. They also refused to even mention social issues like abortion and guns because they knew that would destroy Obama's chances of winning.

Remember over the next few years that Obama ran on a platform that was at least as conservative as McCain's. Obama a tax cutter? Ridiculous, yet that's how many independent (i.e. least informed) voters saw him. Those voters wanted to punish Bush and the Republicans, so all they needed was to feel reasonably comfortable with the Democrat. That was a very low standard to meet, and the MSM easily managed to fool those lazy, uninformed voters.

You can slice and dice the demographics all you want, but they're all connected by that common desire to punish the GOP. There was no ideological re-alignment of the electorate. It was a repudiation of big-gov't Republicanism, as well as a reaction to five years of relentless media bashing of the war. The MSM are well aware that the truth matters very little in propaganda battles, and since they control most of the audience, they can sway many lazy, uninformed voters however they want.

As I've been saying for months, the GOP needs to go. It is firmly controlled by the blue-blooded liberals. We need a conservative party with a charter that says if it is changed or amended the party will legally cease to exist.

Conservatives have the winning message. It is the "moderates" in the GOP who have been dragging us down to defeat. Let the "moderates" and the socially liberal libertarians have the GOP. We'll fight with the Dems over the other 90% of the electorate.

I hope Blackwell is not suggesting that we need to pander to specific groups of people just to win votes, even if we have to abandon conservative principles to do so. A great illustration is that McCain, the champion of amnesty for illegal aliens, did much worse with Latinos than Bush did. But the amnesty battle was supposed to win over those voters. It seems they were too concerned about other issues to give McCain "credit" for his betrayal of conservative principles.

Maybe it was unintentional, but suggesting that we need to "appeal to" certain groups is usually code for pandering, usually with leftist positions.

I doubt that McCain could have won this election but catering to the Republican base made no sense at all. But McCain would have been better off reviving conservative principles as a standard for running the government.

On racism and bigotry:
- You may not want to believe that people look at you this way, but I think the results of this election and the last Congressional races suggest that you all have an image problem and racism may be a part of it.

The perception of hostility is the problem. First Blacks and now Latinos have gotten the message that there are things about them that the base of the GOP doesn't like.

Think about your personal life: If someone seems to think that you're unkind how do you resolve that (keep in mind that you need their vote)? Do you tell them they're wrong? Do you ignore them? Or do you try to show them that they're mistaken?

Pandering
You must realize that there's a difference between pandering and selling your product?

Elections are just that, selling your product and hoping that you a) have a better product than the competition, and (b) do a better job of advertising and convincing people that you do indeed have a better product.

As far as Blacks and Latinos (and Asians) are concerned, the GOP has been shown over the last 8 years to have an inferior product (trickle down; government growth, ill conceived and executed wars, etc) and you all have done a poor job of advertising said product.

The world is changing and you can't win with Southern whites alone anymore. You need to find a way to sell your good ideas and not alienate your consumers.

Be clear about what you mean. If your beef is with people who are socially conservative but economically liberal, then articulate that. Don't try to smear social conservatism by equating it with economic liberalism.

I agree that conservatives need to sell our message better, but part of the problem has been that the Republican president has both taken liberal positions and refused to defend his conservative positions to the public. The rest of the GOP has rarely dared to go against Bush because he has wielded power against opponents in his own party with a heavy hand; he's nicer to his opponents than to his allies. That was a temporary problem that will not hamstring us over the next four years.

What I object to is the notion that we must dilute our message to win votes. The Reagan and Contract with America models showed that the way to win landslide victories is to be more conservative than the average GOP candidate. Reagan did not win his landslide victories "with Southern whites alone". Conservatism, when clearly articulated by candidates, draws Democrat voters who are fundamentally conservative but strangely loyal to the Democratic Party. As I wrote, perhaps Blackwell was not suggesting pandering but rather that we present our message better. That's fine, but he needs to be aware that the language he used is often a euphemism for pandering, and that he needs to present his own message more clearly.

This week Scott Eckert was forced to step down from his position of director of the California Musical Theatre in Sacramento, California, merely because he had contributed $1,000 to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign.

It is also appalling that radical activists are busy combing records, trying to find out who supported Prop 8 so that they can violate their civil rights as well.

While the Anti-8 Aunties are marching on churches all over the state, and targeting the Mormon Church in particular for vile treatment, conservatives are once again sitting on our hands, wishing this issue would go away.

Well, guess what! It is not going away! The Nasty Nancies plan to sue, sue, sue, and intimidate the California voters with their thuggish behavior until they get their way.

Don't you all think it is time that we at least get one article about this horrendeous circumstance?

Two things:
Lestat I don't disgree with you. I think this country needs the best ideas from everyone, including conservatives. And George W. Bush certainly didn;t do you all any favors.

That said (and I don't think you'll disagree) you all, again, aren;t doing a great job of selling your product/your ideas/your party.

The question you (all) need to ask yourself is: what part of my message appeals to voters? Emphasize the positive (like Ronald Reagan did) and step away from the negatives.

If you examine exit polls you'll find that those who designate themselves "liberal" and "conservative" voted in similar numbers to how they've voted in the past. But moderates swung toward the Democratic Party this year and in the previous Congressional election.

Why is that?

What is turning moderates away from your message?

I submit that the answers the GOP usually comes up with for these questions ("they want handouts"; "they're communists"; "they're stupid") may not be very helpful in solving your dilemma.

Liberals went through the same thing. We shunned religious voters and pressed unpopular policies like welfare and affirmative action. Our answers to why we kept losing elections were generally "people are too stupid for their own good" (see: What's the Matter with Kansas).

Obama and the Congresspeople in 2006 changed this strategy. The Congressional candidates like Jim Webb in VA or John Tester in Montana were not typical liberals. Obama is not a typical liberal (despite what you all like to tell yourselves).

Anyway, I have an interest in seeing this country do better and I know that's not going to happen by having only one party's ideas. We need for Republicans to get back in the game so that there's an active competition in the marketplace of ideas.

Once again Ken is right on target. All these GOP guys need to read Newt's book: "Winning the Future". His great ideas would certainly put the GOP over the top!

I agree it would take some imagination and some effort, but its not impractical. Plus, it would make folks feel like they were actually doing something productive, not just bloviating. I beg to differ with you, Ken. McCain is a long way from centrist, he is merely non-confrontational to the Democrats. Secondly, Obama ran on tax cuts, "free" health care and job creation. Two of which are conservative tickets.

2012: Romney/Palin. He has the knowlege to put together an economic and tax plan that will right the economy. She has the tenacity to stay on the "right" course. They need to start planning now and working to get rid of Republicans that aren't conservatives (Olympia Snow, Hagel, etc.)

Start Jamuary 2009 targeting ANY politician that is corrupt or has harmed the taxpayers. Take no prisoners. Especially Secretaries of State. Get the funding to Acorn, the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and La Raza cut off. Expose the Union payoffs.

The Deocrat's are pulling so much crap it will take four years to inform the public of what they are up to.

No simple answer
The Obama win is a mixture of several things, and is almost a perfect storm.

-The votes in Virginia, Ohio, and Florida were extremely close--but the end result was a flood of electoral votes for Obama.

-The media was in the tank for Obama in an uprecedented way, so much so our message was drowned out, suffocated, and even perverted...the misrepresentation of our message was repeated forcefully to the point that it became fact. Perception of Palin TRUMPED the reality of who she was. Voters based their views of Palin on Fey, the Palin impersonator, than on Palin herself. Voters based their view of Palin on the edited versions of interviews by reporters hostile to the GOP.

-Obama took private funding, McCain stuck with public. Not a level playing field.

-The timing of the economic crisis went against the incumbent party. Had this not happened, those battleground states that were CLOSE could have gone to McCain.

-ACORN--who knows? Even if the instances of fraud were small, in some of the close races that could have been a factor.

Had all these factors been equalized, the race may have been different--and we wouldn't be talking so much about how to re-tool the message.

There's nothing wrong with the message, so let's keep perspective here. We need to address what went against us, and preserve the conservative message. Counter the slander from the media. Investigate ACORN. If one candidate takes private funding, then why allow them that unfair advantage?

GOP needs better support
The Democrats supports their candidate 100% why can't the Republicans. In the contest between Obama and Hillary. Fox news and talk radio jumped into that contest and supported Hillary more then their own candidate. Hillary got 50% of the support McCain should have gotten. Thats no good for a candidate running for the Presidency. Support for Hillary was on a 24/7 basis, and McCain was totally forgotten by Fox news and talk radio. It wasn't the GOP who forgot who McCain was during the contest between Hillary and Obama, it was Fox news and talk radio. The next time we go searching for someone to blame like McCain, missed opportunities, President Bush, Sarah Palin, and the economic meltdown, lets not forget who we hear from the most in elections. You state problems within the Republican party quite well; I feel that everyone must embrace them and move forward with solutions. A big step to finding solutions could be for several of America's leading newspaper people, writers and owners, along with major radio/television broadcasters/personalities like Rush, Sean, Hewitt, Prager, Ann, Thomas S....and many, many others could all gather in some kind of council/conference/meeting to come up with a clear Republican agenda and strategy to win the hearts of the American people. They could at the very least lay down some guidelines...brain-storm about what to do next time around!!

Get back to the basics
How about getting back to the things that are honest and good. How about doing the things the constituants voted them in for:
1) Build the fences to stop the flow of illegals (Doesn't matter what Nationality).
2) Give the ones that are here, after the fences are built, 90 days to get their US paperwork started or have it completed then do a sweep of the US and deport those that are not compliant.
3) Clear out the prisons of Illegals and send them back to their country of origin.
4) Now reform the welfare program by putting those that abuse the system to work doing the jobs Americans supposedly wouldn't do. If they are going to get a check they should put in 40 hrs doing something and then be subject random drug testing prior to pay.
5) Ask the countires in which we have occupying troops, whether they want us there or not. If they are going to bad mouth us we move out and let them fend for themselves.
6) Get out of the United Nations completely and oversee our $$ we send to help 3rd world countries.
7) Bring our unwanted troops home to secure our borders both North and South.
8) Once again fortify our military and remain a Super power that will intervene when needed especially in Darfur type situations.
9) Work on helping OUR poor and needy by teaching them how to work and earn a living. No work no eat.
10) Become energy independant. Drill starting tomorrow, start more geothermal facilities etc..
11) Re institute religous freedom nationally. I think if we would look back and be totally honest, as to how we got where we are we could trace it to the kicking of GOD out of everywhere and trying to repalce him w/ anything and everything. We didn't have the lunacy we have now.

I find it unbelievable...that America would elect an unknown far left Liberal/Socialist as President of these United States of America. What have we done? Do we realize that we just enabled a far left Liberal/Socialist agenda upon ourselves? Our forefathers must be turning over in their graves. Mr. “HOPE AND CHANGE” with a total lack of grit will, both at home and aboard; be tested early and often. What if he fails these tests? Then WHAT…? Can we afford his failures?

Once we wake up, we will see the ring and wonder who exactly we married last night.” If President Obama is able to parley Congress to get what he has promised (taking from Peter and giving it to Paul; you will always get Paul’s vote), this wake-up-call may come to late to save America. We made the mistake of giving him the ring on November 4th. We were so disposed in doing so, only time will tell if we will live to regret it. Nov. 4th, 2008 will become known as “Judgment Day”.

The collective judgment displayed by the majority of the voters on Nov. 4th, 2008 is very disturbing. Obama reminds me of others throughout history, with their ability to so quietly and enchantingly say one thing, mean and do another; and people will shake their heads in approval of the very things they oppose. What is amazing is they believe they have agreed with him. The results of this election provide proof that people can be hypnotized to the degree that they not know what they are doing. You just listed the principles of The Constitution Party, the only 100% Conservative party that ran in the last election. It's a shame they couldn't get their word out to the American People.
