Obama's Interesting Choice

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Barack Obama made an interesting choice by tapping Joseph Biden as his running mate. Mr. Biden certainly helps to address one of Mr. Obama's greatest weaknesses. But Senator Obama has three challenges he must face to win the White House, and while Mr. Biden aids one, it leaves the other two as even more problematic. It also cuts against the central theme of Mr. Obama's campaign.

Mr. Biden has a long resume. Serving in the Senate since 1973, he has been a presence in Washington for thirty-five years. During that time he has been involved in a number of issues.

Certainly Mr. Biden's greatest strength is foreign policy. As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he has been involved in the intricacies of many foreign policy issues facing the nation for years.

It is widely believed Mr. Obama's greatest weakness is foreign policy. His lack of experience with foreign policy issues, and his lack of familiarity with world leaders, has been touted by some as the greatest risk to his White House bid.

Mr. Obama's choice of Mr. Biden certainly addresses foreign policy. Mr. Biden can confidently advise Mr. Obama on foreign matters, and has longstanding relationships with foreign leaders. While Mr. Biden's approach to foreign affairs represents the Democratic emphasis on multilateralism, interventionism, and working through the U.N., there is no doubt that he is an authority on foreign affairs.

But it is debatable whether Mr. Obama's need is foreign policy. Voters rightly see the president's primary duty as protecting American lives and the American homeland. While diplomacy and knowledge of world events is part of that, it is only one part. National security is central to protecting American lives. That involves intelligence work, fighting terrorism, and securing vulnerable entry points. The instrument of our national defense is our military. Despite Mr. Biden's general familiarity with these things, he has never served in uniform, or in the Defense Department, or been responsible for national security. He certainly helps in this general area, but he is not seen as an expert on all of these issues.

Regardless of that, there are two other issues with which Mr. Obama must grapple, and far from helping with any of these, Mr. Biden actually makes Mr. Obama's path more difficult.

The first is that Mr. Obama's other big challenge is convincing moderate Americans he shares their values. He is already seen by many as a liberal, big-city politician who says people cling to guns and religion out of bitterness, associates with radicals, and attended a church with a radical theology. Mr. Biden is a fierce foe of gun rights, ardently opposes restrictions on abortion that have widespread support and promotes gay rights. He supports higher taxes, bigger government and socialized healthcare. That doesn't exactly help Mr. Obama with blue-collar voters in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

The second is Mr. Biden's lack of executive experience. Not only has he never been a governor or a cabinet secretary, he has never been a mayor, an agency head, or served in any other executive role, not even prosecutor or military officer. Given that Mr. Obama also lacks that experience, having two career legislators heading the executive branch of our government might create doubts.

And the third issue is Hillary Clinton. Many of Senator Clinton's supporters are still unhappy with Mr. Obama, and right now he is losing some of them to John McCain. This pick does nothing to help heal that rift, which could make the difference in a close election.

More broadly, it cuts against Mr. Obama's central campaign theme of change. His message is Washington is broken, and the old establishment needs to be swept away in favor of new blood and a new vision. How does picking someone who has been in Washington a decade longer than Mr. McCain jive with Mr. Obama's contention that Mr. McCain has been in Washington too long to change it?

Mr. Biden was not the best choice for Mr. Obama. Sure, Messrs. Bayh and Kaine certainly had problems of their own. But if he wanted someone with broad-spectrum national security/foreign policy credentials who could reach traditional voters, he could have asked Sam Nunn of Georgia. If he wanted executive experience and appeal to new constituencies while still getting foreign policy expertise, he could have asked Bill Richardson. And if he wanted to heal his party, he could have asked Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Obama has made his choice, and it's interesting. Now all eyes are on John McCain.

If I were Obama
I would have chosen Bill Richardson.....as you state, executive experience, foreign policy experience, a geographical help in close states, a secretary of energy in the past, one of the biggest issues in this election....as someone planning to vote the other way, I can be glad that he chose someone who either harms or has no effect on his chances. As far as the Hillary rift, she is happy to see it maintained, it creates a window for her to come back in 2012 and try again, especially if Obama loses.

THE BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA PLAN

In the beginning was the Obama Plan (Change We Can Believe In!). And then came the Obama Assumptions. And the Obama Assumptions were without form. And the Obama Plan was without substance. And darkness fell upon the face of the Voters.

And the Voters spoke amongst themselves, saying, “This is a crock of you know what, and it stinks.” And the Voters went unto their Party Supervisors and said, “It is a pail of dung, and we can't live with the smell.”

And the Party Supervisors went unto their Party Managers, saying, “It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it.” And the Party Managers went unto their Party Directors, saying, “It is a vessel of fertilizer, and none may abide its’ strength.”

And the Party Directors spoke amongst themselves, saying to one another, “It contains that which aids Plant growth; and it is very strong.” And the Party Directors went to Joe Biden, saying unto him, “It promotes growth and it is very powerful.”

And Joe Biden went to Barack Obama, saying unto him, “This new Plan will actively promote the growth and vigor of the Nation with very powerful effects.”

And Barack Obama looked upon the Plan and saw that it was good.

And the Plan became Policy.

And that, my friends, is how; “you know what” happens.

Richardson?
We who live in the state where Richardson is governor know what a slimball he is. Encouraging illegal immigration and telling the illegals that he will see that they get their "rights" respected, pushing his sanctuary cities on us, is only one aspect of it. His state party here fights voter I.D. tooth and nail. Wonder why? This guy, born in Mexico City (and should have stayed there) spends all his time campaigning nationally and pays little attention to state issues. Just another self-obsessed pol of the John Edwards stamp. And the dems here fall all over him, like they do Obama nationally. You can have the creep.
Both the creeps. America needs Americans.

Neal
Hard to top that one, very clever, kudos to you.

I do not understand the liberal mind. Why would John F. Kerry (he served in Viet Nam) choose as a running mate and possibele President a man who ran in the primaries and won nothing, not a single state? Even the Dem. base did not want him. Why would the nation as whole say "Hey! that's a brilliant choice and now Kerry's my man."?

Now The Annointed One has done the same thing. NOBODY WANTED BIDEN AS THE DEM. NOMINEE! How does that improve the ticket?

Maybe Kimberly can clear this up for me.

Not such a bad choice
Ken is saying that Biden does not fill every possible need that the Obama camp has. If he (or anyone else) did, they would have been the nominee. No matter who McCain picks they won't look like the perfect candidate because, they are not the candidate.

I met Biden when I lived in Delaware in the 80s. Its a tiny state so you interact with your senatorial candidates the way you do with city council members in other places. I found him to be genuine and articulate. As Ken said, his experience is a definite asset.

What is interesting to me is that this Obama pick does not seem to reflect a Democratic-party-centric agenda of setting up a successor in eight years. Sure, McCain is running as an older man than Biden will be at that time, but that is an unproven offer at this point.

Joe "Hairplug" Biden

Back in the 80's( when I was a blooming no-nothing liberal), I remember Joe Biden struggling with his "bald problem". Everyone knows that, if you have no other attributes to advance your political career as a US senator, well, then, at least have big hair.

As far as I can see Joe's hair is his single greatest senatorial accomplishment.

Democrat Royalty
First we had Prime Minister Pelosi and Arch-Duke Reid.

Now we have the royal Regent Biden ruling in the name of King Obama until he becomes of age.

To be President
For Obama to insure the Presidency lock it up he should have took Hillary as VP. The four years would have been hell with Hillary at your back Obama, but you would have won the presidency.

Predictability of the Democratics
The predictability of the Democratic Party is just amazing. What do the candidacies of Musky, McGovern, Dukakis, Kerry, and now Obama all have in common? They are all very liberal politicians from very if not completely liberal states, who have never had to run in tough general elections in state with 2 party politics.
Good presidential candidates are governors of large states with 50:50 (or close) party registration. George Bush running for governor of Texas against a reasonably well liked incumbent is a much better training ground running for President that the General election for Senator from Massachusetts or Illinois.

So does the press ever let you know how many of Illinois’s 39 counties Obama won in his Senatorial election. He won one, Cook County (i.e. Chicago). He lost the rest of the state.

Biden has basically the same qualities as John Edwards. Biden has only run easy elections in a totally Democratic Sate. ( I should know, I lived in Delaware for 5 years) But unlike Edwards at least he could reelection in his own state.

I think once the public uncovers just what a hollow suit Obama really is, McCain wins by default. Often this is the way things work out. Unfortunately this time the main stream press will use Obama’s defeat to tell just how terribly racist and bigoted we are as a nation. The will never come to the conclusion that Obama is an empty and unprepared candidate.

jaybird, Reprob8
Jaybird, I am glad to hear something about Richardson from someone in a place to know about him. On paper he looks like the ideal candidate. Suffice it to say, that would make an ideal VP. However, his moustache/goatee makes him look like a lounge lizard from a cheap lounge.

Reprob8, you must issue a spew alert. I was on my second cup of coffee when I read your post. I am only posting now after cleaning my screen. Have to love humor in the morning; it wakes me up.

Obama, Not My President
No President should be elected for their promise to take money from one group of Americans and give to others in a effort to make all Americans robots of the state.
Where is the equality in this?
Even the Bible says that all will enjoy the fruit of their own labor. It does not say that those that labor should be forced to share their fruits with those that don't. It is called "individualism" A word that Democrats never utter.

Obama's Choice
I wholeheartedly think he should have chosen Elmer Fudd.

Globug
It doesn't sound very democratic does it? Obama and Obiden do not march in lock step, however, when you look at Obiden's voting record. No Robin Hood there. Hmmm...

I'm BACK
New parody to Biden. My blog. Check it out!

I Would Argue That...
Obama's VP choice just gave McCain the election. Please read the following quotes from Joe Biden:

The Daily Show, August 2, 2005: “John McCain is a personal friend, a great friend, and I would be honored to run with or against John McCain, because I think the country would be better off, be well off no matter who...”

How about another:

MSNBC, October 30, 2007: “The only guy on the other side who’s qualified is John McCain.”

Obama just shot himself in the foot with this VP choice.

For these, and other quotes from Biden, please take a look at my blog site. Unless John McCain makes a horrible mistake, be prepared for President John McCain on November 5, 2008.

Question for Barry O
Who is more qualified to be leader of the free world? You or Biden?

William 7:39 am
"I wholeheartedly think he should have chosen Elmer Fudd."

Isn't that who he picked? (Or a reasonable facsimile of Mr. Fudd)

I have a mental image of McCain, Obama, and Biden in the forest:

McCain: Duck Season!

Obama: Rabbit Season!

McCain: Duck Season!

Obama: Rabbit Season!

McCain: Rabbit Season!

Obama: Duck Season! Shoot!

Biden: (Pulls the trigger of his shotgun while pointing at Obama. Obama's duck beak goes flying into a tree after being shot off.)

For Grape Guy
You said: "I met Biden when I lived in Delaware in the 80s...I found him to be genuine and articulate." I read the other day that Biden reminded them of a car salesman. Know why? His father was a car salesman. Biden strikes me the same way. No matter how broken down the wreck is, he is just as enthusiastic as he is about the new car on the lot. He's ready to sell you.....Obambi! This year's new model.

Biden is a Trader
Obama is a socialist, per his speech in Germany. His wife is militant, per her demeanor and spoken words. Joe Biden decided to become their spokes person and now I will remember him as a traitor. I am distressed that we have so called leaders in our country who think they can ignore our Constitution. Joe Biden, you have a state that is full of indigents, offer poor public education and call yourself an American? I think not! If the black man wins, I will stop working and use his socialism to ride out the tide for 4 years. I am not going to work so others can have an easier lifestyle. How dare this man use the system for his own benefit.

News Flash
I believe kimberly will not touch this issue with a ten foot pole. Reason being, his candidate, made the biggest blunder ever. Had he really wanted to win the presidency, he should have eaten crow and nominated Hillary who except for the DNC would have been running against McCain. Today I celebrate the demise of this stupid candidate. Cant be book smart and street smart and so life-dumb, I believe the power in that household is his hate-america angry wife.

Neal, great post
That explains a lot of the male bovine excrement the dems are spreading around, they tell themselves it has to be good becasue they say so.

A DEFEAT WITH A PURPOSE?
I begin to smell a rat.
Perhaps they ( the left- underbelly of Amerika)
may well be plotting massive demonstrations and riots in the city's on a grand scale when humpty obake (spook in Japanese)falls of his wall. With the ARMY'S BEING TIED UP ON 2 FRONTS
They will be hard stapped to interfere, and thus the mobs may well be able to pull off some type of a coup.ED

Biden my time
The real reason Biden was selected is that Nobama needs adult supervision on the campaign trail.

Will, Glad you are
not Obama. He would have had a snake to contend with. Even the obstrusive Mr. Clinton would have been a blessed event if he could have won the Presidency. In this case, with his choice he gave the "Republic" a chance to avoid the total leftist agenda spoused by Mr. Hussein Obama. His stupidity has no bounds, what about the fact that he gave up a running mate that accrued 18million votes for a primary contender who got 7000 votes at most. In a way I couldn't be happier, someone who believes American should be weaker whose wife calls us down right mean...she's never been proud in all her adult life of her country needs to be shipped to Africa, see how she likes it there.

That would be a gift from heaven if the Looney Left tries this. Remember the Rodney King Riots? The Korean store owners with their SKS's and AK-47's defending their stores?

Multiply the Korean store owners by 1,000,000 and this is what will happen. Conservatives (and NRA members) are already mad. This would just allow them to "vent" their anger.

The USA won't need the US military; it will need a bunch of caskets or body bags. There wouldn't be enough left of these kooks to staff a small grocery store (owned by Koreans)!

JOBAMA IS A GREAT CHOICE FOR THE GOP

.....Biden might have been the worst of all possible picks for OBAMBI ...

.....BIDEN brings nothing to the ticket ...Delaware is deep blue ...BIDEN is a career Senator with foot-in-the-mouth disease ...he was so popular with Democrats that he dropped out of the Presedential race after Iowa ...

.....Two northern Senators, both radically pro-choice and anti-gun will not attract very many southern white votes ...only McCain's VP pick can screw up this oppertunity ...he needs a strong conservative who is universally respected ....his supporters overwhelmingly want Mitt Romney ... Mitt should be the logical choice if the GOP wants to hold onto the White House for a few more election cycles.....COLOSSUS

VOTE FOR MC CAIN...AFTER ALL HILLARY IS GOING TO VOTE FOR HIM !
ELVIS

Surprise
I was surprised Obama, the Messiah, only picked one person for VP, I really thought he was going to pick twelve.

I did like the idea of the 3 am phone call (text) though. What a slap in the face to Hillary and her voters.

Foreign Policy Funds
With the threat of socialism at our front door, all I can imagine is that all of our highly educated, high wage earning citizens will begin to work on a part time basis to avoid the "distribution of their wealth".

FAR LEFT
Please the media and democrats labeled Newt Gingrich a member of the FAR RIGHT. What is OBAMA? The media tries to paint him as middle left. If he is and the democrats win what will the nation look like after eight years?

Obama Biden immediately attack Mr. McCain as being elitist because he has a wife with money. Many in America would like to be in a position of allowing family members to live in a home they own, like the McCains. Most people do not get to have a political supporter buy a portion of their property for them.

wil: Is that you,'will?' Banned again?

Hate to admit it, but I agree. If it was someone with foreign policy experience, Bill Richardson would be THE person...

BIDEN AND BO'S JAILBIRDS OF A FEATHER
The Chicago Sun-Times has an article on Biden's Rezko connection. So much for the exalted vetting process of the Dhimmicratic Party for VP. Link is:

http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/rezko/1124666,CST-NWS-r ezko25.article

Just a sample: Offering Cari a vote of confidence at the time, Biden said, "All I know is Joe Cari is a friend, and he's an honorable guy, but I don't know anything beyond that."

"Joseph Cari Jr. ... took part in an $850,000 kickback scheme, was Joe Biden's Midwest field director."

"In 2005, Cari admitted to taking part in an $850,000 kickback scheme that prosecutors say was part of a larger political fund-raising operation for Gov. Blagojevich overseen by Rezko, who was convicted in June of wide-ranging corruption involving state deals."

So much for the exalted vetting process of the Dhimmicratic party for VP.

“Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company.” - George Washington

Ken
Are you the surprise Senator McCain has in store for Dayton on the 29th? It certainly would qualify for his Maverick persona. While the dems would break their necks trying to criminalize your '04 role as Ohio Secstate, they would fail to provide evidence, since it doesn't exist, and the result would be to not only clear your name once and for all, but their efforts would spotlight their own crack for registration and fictional character voter registration of the time, while showing your superior executive skills, ( McCain's Achille's heel ). Mind you, it might have been better, had you beat Strickland, but then, we would have lost you anyway.

I suspect its Mitt, but would be very happy if McCain tapped you!

Joe Biden
I agree with what you said, but you left out one other item. Joe Biden voted for the Iraq War Resolution. Obama said going to war with Iraq was a mistake. Then how can he pick someone who also made a mistake by giving Bush the authorization to go to war?

Missed Bet
Obamarama missed out on a balanced ticket candidate - Texas' Chet Edwards.

Chet is good looking, popular (Nacy Pelosi's favored choie for veep), polished speaker, politically experienced, YOUNG, and a bunch of other adjectives.

Chet has recognition as "moderate Republican". That, I believe,is just a facade and that he is in reality as liberal as Kennedy, Biden et.al.
He maintains his cover because he represents a "GOP-leaning political district" in Waco, TX.

Chet was favored by Pelosi and Obama - even Hillary likes him - but ... In the Sunday (central Texas) papers, Chet Edwards reflected on not being selected was due to "name recognition/confusion".

Chet acknowledged he does not have the "national name recognition" of Biden (THAT probably could have been a positive), and some might confuse him with that other Edwards - the scandalous John!

Personally, I am glad Chet wasn't selected! His facade would have added legitimacy to Barack as unifier, and the name-thing could easily have been cleared up. He MIGHT have assured BHO getting elected.

Biden, on the other hand is just as "confused", liberal, radical, etc., as Obama. Biden also makes fauax pas as easily as Obama, and he makes them with drool-from-the-mouth, fire-in-the-belly rhetoric. Because of his selection, dimmies are now considering writing in Hillary's name, voting for Mac, or staying home election day.

What will Mac do?!? With the "right" VP selection, Mac can get a big bounce in the polls. If Mac annoints an "unconventional" running mate - as GOPers fear - he will commit political suicide.

McCain win even more likely
Aas I keep saying in posts on TH, there is a very good chance that McCain can win. Obama's choice of Joe Biden increases this possibility. Biden adds little to Obama. He is a tired, over-the-hill congressional Democrat whose track record in numbingly average.

The ONLY running mate who would have helped Obama with his own party was Hillary, but with Hillary, all of us know, would come Bill. And even a liberal Democrat like me doesn't want Bill Clinton anywhere near the White House.

All McCain has to do is sound tough and experienced on national security issues, and let some of those working for him rip gays a little bit and he's in.

will the 'Crats win?

Why not the Messiah?

I think that a number of little things make people nervous about Obamanation, and taken altogether they may prove fatal for him--

arugula... Rev. Wright... the militant wife they are trying to muffle... Rezco... virtually NO apropos experience-- the empty slate... a weird upbringing/background... vague promises about "change"-- BUT WHAT DOES THAT REALLY MEAN?!... "people in Pa. embracing their guns and religion amid fears"... the certain sense that he would raise taxes and social welfare spending-- though that has NEVER worked in the past, and we theoretically slowed that government giveaway trend in the late 90's.

Funny thing, except for "the Bradley Factor," I would have thought a short time ago that the Messiah could not lose because Presidente
Jorge had made such a mess in Iraq and he and Amnesty John had embraced ILLEGALS, and gas prices had soared, but the Messiah might be blowing this lay-up... the election will be a referendum on Obamanation.

Sen. Biden will have no impact
My opinion is that the VP choice will have only marginal impact on the election.

By this time almost all voters that follow politics have made up their minds on whom they will vote for. If they don't follow politics or live in the Delaware area then Sen Biden's name and positions will not be known to them.

Now everyone knows Sen Clinton so you either love her or hate her and her choice would be very polarizing.

For those who don't like Sen Biden's politics (I certainly wouldnt vote for him) well they wouldnt vote for SEN Obama anyway.

The great mass of undecided voters everyone talks about out there are really 'Ignorant or uninformed of politics' voters. These are people without strong feelings in either direction. In the case of these people they won't be swayed either way by a guy they barely know.

VP Cheyne, Gore, Quayle, and VP Bush were ALL less popular then the Pres they served for and NONE of them swung the elections for or against their President.
Tinsldr2@yahoo.com
P.S. Mr Blackwell should be ashamed of refering to SEN Biden as "Mr." Biden. However much we dislike the man, we should show respect for the "Position" in public discourse. (see my blog on that topic by clicking my name.

The Mr. Biden Disaster
This is a disaster for Barack Hussein Obama. Biden is nothing but a loose cannon and a know-nothing windbag. Like Teddy Kennedy he is proof positive that we need to repeal the 17th amendment. Biden will be a national distater and if elected, an embarassment to Obama as he is to the Republic.

Obama fell for the flattery
I guess Obama became smitten with Biden when he said he was an "articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy..". That son of a car salesman sure can lay it on thick and I guess Obama fell for it.

Gestell, tinsldr2
Obama got no bounce in the polls from picking Biden. HOORAY!

Obama Blew It
It would have been hard even with Hillary; now, imho, it will be impossible for Obama to win.

America First!

Tinsldr2, Welcome home
Nice to see you made it back to civilization in one piece. I must have missed it when you got homoe. Are you home for good, or just temporarily.
