Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It behooves us all, especially in this pivotal election year, to reflect on the words of our nations Founders in light of medical sciences capacity to infringe upon the first human right, the right to life.

The Sunday Times of London recently reported that a couple screened children shortly after conception who might have had an increased chance for cancer so they destroyed the embryos that had the defective gene. This medical capability in modern day eugenics has terrifying and profound implications for American public policy.

The article started, A woman has conceived Britains first baby guaranteed to be free from hereditary breast cancer. You would almost think that what she and her husband consented to was a good thing.

They had her eggs fertilized to produce 11 female children. They then had a lab genetically test all of them for a gene that increases the chance of breast cancer. Five of them were found to be free of the gene, of which two were implanted in her womb. Shes now 14 weeks pregnant.

The other embryos were all destroyed.

The couples rationale was they had two family members who had suffered with breast cancer. They wanted healthy babies, so they made sure the wife would only carry a baby that was not considered at risk for breast cancer. After all, breast cancer is one of the leading killers of women in the world.

But there was not even an ironclad certainty that any of them would ever get breast cancer. What the couple decided to do and what the doctors did is disturbing. Should we cull the herd of humanity, looking for genetic weakness and destroying life in the earliest stage for those whom we deem to carry too risky health problems?

This destruction of life ignores the chances of finding a cure.

Today there are illnesses we can successfully treat or even cure that were thought hopeless when babies were born with them. Every year there are increasingly effective treatments for cancer, and scientists say there is a solid chance we can find a cure for the disease.

What a tragedy it would be to destroy a life today to save that person from possibly encountering an illness in the future when we may have a cure for that illness years before they get sick.

I am a cancer survivor. Eight years ago I was treated for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is one of the leading killers of men in the world.

I am also 60 years old. What if there was a genetic screening test for prostate cancer 60 years ago? Would I have been born? As I look at the faces of my grown children, I contemplate that they would never have lived if their father had never been born.

No one knows the length of our lives. Families all across this country suffer the loss of perfectly healthy babies in the first years of life. Other people overcome enormous health obstacles to have extraordinary lives. And still others succumb to breast cancer, prostate cancer or other illnesses, but after long, happy, and productive lives.

There is a horrifying slippery slope here. Where do we draw the line? Again, these babies did not have a debilitating lifelong malady. All they had was a chance of developing an illness. Whats next? Poor eyesight or hearing? How about food allergies?

Better yet, why stop at abnormalities? How about insisting they be taller than average, or have superior abilities? While youre at it, why not also select the eye color and hair color? Dont just fertilize eleven eggs. Fertilize a hundred, choose the single best one, and destroy the rest.

Grotesque.

Yet that is the world we now live in, so our leaders must now take a stand on all such policy issues.

This is similar in one regard to our recent national debate on embryonic stem cell research. For several years the press and liberals pounded the president for opposing the destruction of fertilized embryos like those destroyed by British doctors for scientific research. But earlier this year scientists discovered a method for extracting stem cells from skin cells called somatic cell dedifferentiation. Now scientists can engage in all the research they like without harming anyone.

Thats the potential of medical science. And its the potential ignored by the aforementioned British doctors, and those like them in America.

We are in an era where science enables us to do wonderful things, but also terrible things. Our public policy must protect life, especially the lives of innocent, unborn children.

And we must never deceive ourselves that we do children a favor by ending their lives as they begin.

Whenever I read such a line, that contains "innocent children", I cringe. Invariably it is written by one or another of the fetus worshippers, who is trying to draw a false picture of a smiling, bouncing baby, where no such person exists. They are talking of course of embryos, who are no more persons than an acorn is a mighty oak tree.
IF they are selected and IF they survive to birth, they might BECOME a person. Until then, they are what they are in each stage of their development: a cell, a divided cell, a clump of cells, a zygote, an embryo, a fetus.

I am also surprised that they do not start their false pictures earlier in the development. We all have seen human eggs under the microscope. We all have seen sperm pictures. Human sperm are very much alive. They usually have a magnificent tail, which they use vigorously swimming upstream. For the sperm worshippers, every sperm is sacred.
Without a sperm you can't have a baby. Looking at the bouncing sperm, you can have pictures of a potential Joan of Ark, a potential Einstein, a potential Mother Teresa, apotential Jack the Ripper, a potential George Bush. Feh. No potential Jesus. No sperm involved there.

Of course, there are plenty of innocent children. They are here in America, waking up hungry to no breakfast, having gone to bed hungry. There are innocent children in Darfur and in a dozen other countries, who need a helping hand, a kind word, a human touch. They won't get it from the fetus worshippers. These kids are already born.

Well, they are going to die anyway
So, they don't get breast cancer. They may end up with Alzheimers (which I think would be a far worse fate). We are human, we are mortal, we die. People need to face it.

However, to prevent something really bad, like avoiding childeren with Lou Gehrig's disease or MS, which I have heard that you are likely to have a 50-50 chance of passing on to your children if one of your parents died of these, it sounds like a good plan.

I agree with AlphaOmega here. These fetus worshippers go on and on about the unborn, but once they are born, they are on their own with these folks. Sheer hypocrisy.

Selective Abortion
The blindness of Alpha Omega and Caligua to the moral relativism and great danger of selective abortion is quite astounding. Hate for those who defend the unborn drips from their comments. An unborn child is hardly akin to an acorn and such sophistry only illustrates the shallowness of the thought here. The reality is that an unborn child is a unique human being that both lives and grows and is distinguishable from the born by only its place of residence and, in comparison to some of us, its dependence on others for sustenance. The idea that such a dependent's very life should depend on another's view of the potential quality of that life is nothing more than selfish rationalism, particularly when those judging would bear the burden of care and, therefore, have a conflict of interest. The implications for the elderly, the infirm and the imperfect, all of whom are among the already born, are grave and that is the point these commenters miss.

Choosing the healthiest offspring...
Who can afford to raise 11 embryos into adults? What is wrong with picking the healthiest ones to raise & discarding the rest of them? They're too undeveloped to know they might grow into a person with a few years worth of nurturing. At some point you have to 'cull' in order to raise the 'innocent' children already here to adults. There are as many miscarriages as live births if you count every conception as a pregnancy. Not every fetus 'sticks' where it's supposed to until it results in a live baby. God's culling, maybe?

You know, I have heard other advocates of death such as yourself make similiar claims as this:

And yet, you offer no examples and no proof what-so-ever that this is, in fact, the case.

These are nothing more than medical terms. They don't invalidate the personhood of the one developing. In medical terminology a pregnant woman is called a Gravida. Does this mean she is not a person? We are all Homo sapiens according to science. Does the term invalidate our personness?

In fact, your statement actually makes the point that at no time in the human condition do we ever "arrive" at personhood. Human beings (Homo sapiens) are in a constant state of evolvement, development and change from the moment of conception until the day we die in old age. The stage of development does not confer personhood. There are medical terms for all these stages of development as well as the stages of devolvement.

Perhaps you would like us to pinpoint the exact moment when a person stops advancing and starts to deteriorate. Then we could declare that they are no longer worthy of life and are not persons because they are “devolving”.

Using medical terminology to try and give sophistication to your argument does not camouflage the living human being that exists in all stages of human life.

What will the moral relatists think...
...when the ever elusive "gay gene" is discovered and then the wholesale elimination of that sector of society takes place. Ah, but it's just a clump of cells.

The American Patriot lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.

The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness and the right to self determination and wish America no harm.

The American Patriot does not want to weaken America in dangerous times for political reasons.

The American Patriot does not put ideology first and America second to harm it in hopes it will learn a 'lesson'.

It's just an embroyo
But all these embroyos all have one thing in common. Left alone they become human beings. These cells aren't watermelons or puppies. What happens when alpha and cal start getting on the downhill slope, they have a terminal illness, will it be easier to send them off early? They were heading that way anyway, it's just easier for the family if they just go now. Callousness at one end of the spectrum leads to callousness at the other end. It's for the "good" of the family. Murder is murder, it's an innocent life no matter the age or development. Rationalization won't work.

The American Warrior
The American Warrior is someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness.

The American Warrior is someone who frightens many people because they live in denial of reality, the American Warrior reminds those people that violence exists in the world.

The American Warrior has the capacity for violence towards those who threaten America and the American way of life.

Most Americans are glad that they were not on the planes that crashed into the WTC and the Pentagon - the American Warrior wished they had been on those planes because they might have made a difference.

American Warriors were on United Airlines Flight 93 and defended unto death America and its citizens with the cry "lets roll".

The American Warrior waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, America and its citizens.

Get real you "CHOICE" NUTS
Regarding a women’s right to CHOOSE abortion/murder. Because, women do have the right to choose, it was before they opened their legs, that was where they failed to make a choice between responsibility of actions i.e. birth control or maybe morality. But by CHOOSING to be irresponsible and using abortion as the solution, making abortion nothing more than another form of birth control. In a more moderate tone to restate the issue, “The Choice needs to be made before risking a pregnancy or at precisely before the moment of intimacy, not afterwards.” Unfortunately we live in an era when society, lacking any faith based morality chooses to deny the ideology that each and every human life is created in the image of God and is held precious and deserving of protection. The concept that it is our right “to pleasure ourselves at the expense of the children” resulting from such acts seems not to fit in with any Judaic/Christian beliefs or for that matter, I believe the remaining religious doctrines either

Pancreatic Cancer killed my mother at 82 and lung cancer killed my dad at the age of 56, but he smoked 3 packs of Camels a day, had he chosen not to smoke he might have made it to 82 but you who are of the Hitler mentality of a pure and perfect race fail to see the value of human life with or without flaws. Why is it.....
...Ken Blackwell, Mad as hell GRANDMA, truetolife and others speak out so vehemently against parents who choose to increase the odds of THEIR children having a happy, healthy life? While at the same time saying NOTHING about all of the fertilized potential embryos that fertility clinics discard for no reason other than they are extras that are not needed. So it is ok to go to a fertility clinic to increase the chance of a couple (no single women need apply right GRANDMA?) to have a child as long as you pick your fetilized eggs to be implanted at random. It seems to me Ken, Grandma, trutolife and their ilk should be dedicating their lives to shutting down every fertility clinic on the planet. But as Higene correctly stated the technology exists and it will be used on a larger and larger scale in the years to come. No amount of "moral outrage" will slow it down because in the back of Kens, GRANDMAS, trutolifes, et al minds, if they were to be honest, they know they would take advantage of this technology themselves if they were in a similiar situation. Who wouldn't? You would be a fool NOT to.

Of COURSE I am opposed to fertility clinics. I am opposed to birth control outside of NFP. I am opposed to anything that interferes with our being open to God's plan for us and our reproduction. I am SO conservative that people just shake their heads at me in wonder an disbelief. I am in this world, but not of the world. Anything that interferes with God's plan of creation is in opposition to God. Period. Sorry to all you of other faiths who still believe birth control is alright. It's not. The pill is an abortifacient. Masturbation (I can't believe that Higene spelled that incorrectly--maybe his hands are too hairy to type-tee hee)is a sin. So anything that involves the use of masturbation in order to try to conceive is sinful. Laugh now--but we'll see who gets the last laugh. Except it won't be funny when we are all at the Last Judgement and every truth that people like me are trying to impart on threads like this will come to light. You'll never be able to say to Jesus, "But I didn't know."

Pro-life is ...
a spin term that is supposed to give anti-abortion activists that warm fuzzy feeling. The world is not that easily cut and dried.

Pro-lifers are rarely, truly pro-life. Many are pro-war and pro-death penalty and anti-social programs. A true pro-life person would be a vegan be against all of the above plus animal cruelty.

The basis for being against abortion is understandable and I doubt anyone is really pro-abortion but many are pro-choice meaning that they support the right of the woman to control her body and reproductive system. A fetus is not an individual. The fetus is 100% dependent upon the physical processes of the woman. There are many risks inherent to the birthing process and pregnancy. You cannot force me to support your physical being and a fetus does not have that right, either.


In reality, pro-lifers tend to be only anti-abortion. Why? I think there are several reasons. First, is that they often are ignorant of the process of conception and development. Second, their minds tend to be clouded by superstition and mythology. Third, they are inundated by the certain groups that spin and, sometimes, lie. Fourth, they have unrealistic ideas about the world and how it works. Fifth, they do not care about the views of others.

There is no such thing as the devil, there is no evidence for any such being. That is why people who claim that 'the devil made me do it' are committed.

Plus, a the concept of the devil is nonsensical in light of christian theology. God cannot be almighty if it cannot stop the bad works of the devil. That means that there would have to be 2 gods, one good and one bad. Otherwise, god would have to allow evil and that would not be a loving god. If you watched a rape, knowing that you could have stopped it, then you are culpable.

So, it is not up to man to judge God by what is fair and just....bad things happen to good people. Look what happened to Jesus. But God never abandoned him either even though Jesus 'felt' abandoned too.

I have watched many loved ones die after 20 years in medicine. Many of them were 'good christians,' as were their family members. Christians suffer and die just like muslims, hindus, buddhists and atheists.


There is no evidence that your religion is more true than any other. It is not about me hating anything, it is just a fact of life.

I find it odd that you disqualify Catholicism from being able to voice an opinion in eugenics because of the inqusition. The inqusition lasted for a brief time and though tragic it did not end as many lives as did the Holucast or abortion. The Holucast was based on eugenics. That Jews were considered genetically inferior. It was not based on a religious view, otherwise they could have converted to Christianity. This was not an option. The same basic argument is being used in the choice of which child is allowed to be born. Some genes are superior than others and the bad should not be allowed. If you compare the lives killed by Marxism/socialism/facisim or even abortion then you should follow your same logic and not voice and opinion about eugenics. It has ended far more lives than religion.
