Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” — Alexis de Tocqueville

The quintessential American worldview is founded on the centrality of God and the primacy of the individual in the life of our nation. Good societies are not created by great governments. Good societies are created by good people acting freely in their own self interest and the interests of others.

That notion is in stark contrast with recent revelations regarding Senator Obama. We are now beginning to see more and more evidence that he has a worldview regarding government, property, and self-determination well outside the mainstream.

Consider what we have learned over the past three weeks. Leaving aside all the social issues in this column, just examine the economic issues.

Healthcare:
First, paying for healthcare. The past several years have seen several million Americans start Health Savings Accounts. They enable people to save and accumulate money tax-free to pay for personal or family medical costs. They empower individuals to shop for the best deals and eliminate waste, stewarding their own resources to care for their own families.

But Mr. Obama has different ideas. He opposes HSAs, and his now-infamous 1996 questionnaire shows he has always opposed personal health care autonomy. Instead, he wants the central government to make all of those decisions for you and your family. A massive federal bureaucracy will decide what medical procedures doctors can perform, who qualifies for what treatments, and who can perform what services.

The price tag for this bureaucratic colossus is a stunning $800 billion, and that is just for starters. And how will he pay for this? He is going to raise taxes. While some might say that would all come from “the rich,” even a quick glance shows “the rich” cannot provide almost a trillion dollars.

Capital Gains Taxation:
Second, Mr. Obama now wants to double the tax on capital gains. Supposedly, this only taxes “the rich” and is consistent with the publicly expressed doctrine of his church, which decries the accumulation of wealth. This includes the wealth accumulation by those of middle income.

His plan taxes the middle class and those who have saved. In 1980, 20% of Americans owned stock, which would be subject to the tax. But now almost 60% of Americans own stock, so this tax would take money out of every 401k, every IRA, every college-savings investment account, and away from retirees who put any money into stock for retirement.

Charitable Giving: Third, giving. Since 2000, in the years where Mr. Obama and his wife made between $200,000 and $300,000, they gave about 1% of their income to charity. Much of that 1% was given to Jeremiah Wright’s church.

This again shows Mr. Obama’s worldview. He clearly believes that rather than giving generously to those in need and to worthy causes and charities, the government should do the giving. Since government has no money, that means it needs to take more of your money through taxes, so that it can decide who deserves your money.

For those who might object that these are cherry-picked incidents, consider this: according to National Journal Barack Obama is the number one most liberal member of the U.S. Senate. National Journal is hardly a conservative mouthpiece. Its ratings are well accepted as an objective benchmark, and Mr. Obama’s record puts him to the left of Ted Kennedy and Barbara Boxer.

Trusting the People:
In the American system, we trust the people to make self-interest and informed decisions, according to their own wants and needs. That is freedom. This is opposed to collectivist decision-making from a central government.

But, central government planning is what Mr. Obama’s policies require. He would rather tax you and spend your own money for your own good than trust you to decide how to spend your money.

More good is accomplished for more people by private organizations and citizens freely giving as they see fit than a bureaucratic national government amassing and redistributing billions of dollars according to some political formulation.

High taxes, but low personal giving, also is consistent with this emerging picture of Mr. Obama. Someone who thinks that government carries the primary burden for caring for the poor, feeding the hungry, and housing the homeless, is likely not to give much money to charities, but require all citizens to give hundreds of billions of dollars to the inefficient central government to address these issues.

I wonder if we can afford Mr. Obama’s generosity.

Part II of this series will deal with what has been revealed in the past couple of weeks about Senator Obama’s cultural and social values through his 1996 questionnaire, and recent unscripted comments.

Liberal generosity
The entire concept of charity has been distorted by liberal theology. Liberals derive wonderful feelings of self satisfaction if they can get government to steal from honest citizens to support redistribution initiatives they are all too ready to claim credit for.

In doing so, they punish effort, stifle enterprise, reward non effort, and create dependency - all the while basking in the glow of an approving liberal media applause machine.

Personally, there's nothing to lose and everything to gain - a perfect win-win.

And Oblahma is waiting to unleash his horde of race hustlers on the country to take such theft to new quantum levels. There's at least one group that has hope for the future.

A Hero With Other People's Money
The hypocrisy of liberals is astounding. In 2005, the Obamas gave 4% of their income to charity.

In contrast, in 2005, Dick Cheney, the second most hated man in America, gave 77% of his income to charity. The Cheneys donated $104,425 to charity in 2006 alone. This brings the Cheneys’ total charitable contributions during his Vice Presidency to $7,800,019 - that's 7.8 million. Obama, on the other hand, gave a measly 4% during that same period, (146,042 out of a $3.6 million AGI) and most of that was in the last two years after he decided to run for POTUS when his handlers told him to step it up a notch.

Like most liberals, Obama apparently wants to do good work with OTHER PEOPLE's income; certainly not his own.

Hillary Clinton still refuses to release her returns, so we have no idea how stingy (or generous) the Clintons were. My guess is that it's the former.

To Bob C
Barack Obama has explained that in the years following his graduation and his wife's graduation from Harvard Law, much of their income was diverted to paying off their student loans, a monthly amount greater than their mortgage payment. I don't know what tuition was when the Obamas attended, but current tuition (I just googled it) is $41,500 per year.

And it doesn't take a CPA to figure out that Cheney gave so generously to charity for the purpose of tax relief.

Ah Lilly
Lilly, Lilly, the bottomless pit of excuses.

Cheapskate Obama gets a pass, but Cheney is just doing it for "tax relief."

Silly Lilly. Your hypocrisy is incredible. Most people who have large student loans don't live in huge homes before they pay them off. In fact, most people don't even buy a home before they pay off their student loans. But then Obama, like you, is a bottomless pit of excuses.

HSAs vs Good Care
Proponents of Healthcare Savings Accounts have been clear about their intention: when people have to pay for medical care out-of-pocket, they will seek less medical care "and not go running to the doctor for every little thing". Such prophylactic care as yearly physical exams (including screening for early signs of diabetes and cardiovascular disease), mammogram, PSA and PAP Smear tests, and colonoscopy will soon become unaffordable luxuries for many, perhaps most, Americans. Public health gains of recent decades will be lost as we revert to the good old days when people went to the doctor only when so sick they couldn't avoid doing so.

Online we see "John McCain's Health Plan" which of course is HSAs with very high deductibles, usually $5K per year per person. Tax incentives to employers to offer medical insurance will be ended; it is anticipated that we will see the death of Blue Cross and its fellows within five years.

Third-party payor systems have given us superior health care. We will lose it when the standard of practice becomes "what can the patient pay for out-of-pocket". Meanwhile we live with the conservative lie that third-party care is "free" to the patient; when I pay $6K per year for premiums, my care is not free, but it is surely the greatest bargain in my life.

grubby
Well said!

Liberals have re-defined almost everything including generosity. "Limousine Liberals" and their mind numbed minions are perpetrators of the greatest crimes ever committed against America.

The deeds of Al Capone pale in comparison to the deeds of Liberalism.

When will we see "American Patriots and Heroes" stand against this evil!

Grubby you are a patriot!

Bob-C
Have you looked at this morning's online news? There's an article in the Wall Street Journal titled "Solving the Hillary Problem" which describes HC's pursuit of the Democratic nomination as "futile...unwinnable" and addresses her "selfish and grandiose sense of entitlement for the presidency...". The author's idea is that HC should quit. In other words, Obama is looking pretty good, and this is the WSJ talking. What was it that you conservatives were saying about him, that he was an empty suit, a know-nothing, a do-nothing, just a pretty smile, a puppet, a figurehead for white liberal guilt?

Well, well. How this man scares you, that you are all in feeding frenzy mode. Frankly I don't care whether he gave one cent to charity---he has already offered to give up everything he has to his country. This is a man who could have named his salary in corporate law and lived a good life in luxury and privacy: instead, he puts up with the likes of you, ripping him apart and pouring acid on the pieces.

As for paying off student loans for advanced education, it took my husband and me fifteen years to pay off ours, and certainly we did not raise our children in student-level housing all that time.

What Student Loans?
Where's the evidence that he had ANY Student loans? Please don't tell me that he paid them all off before the year 2000......see his tax returns for that year.

Nor Michelle either, not a dime toward student loans.........

Bob_c
You Sir, are a Patriot!

American society was founded on the premise that the individual has the right to self determination.

Liberals are nothing more than collectivists and their various and sundry "bottom feeders" who want to live off of our labor.

lilly
Save it for the yokels.

Your characterization of Obama as a selfless hero, riding in on a big black horse (white would be racist) to save us all from ourselves is the height of absurdity.

lilly
The health care industry is currently run on insurance. Insurance is a scam. Just like pari-mutual betting, the public comes away poorer. The insurance premiums not only go to pay doctors, hospitals, etc. but also support the entire insurance industry. So the public puts $1000 in but does not get $1000 worth of health care.

The vast majority of people don't, in their lifetime, use the amount of money paid in premiums. The minority that does use more than paid in are basically welfare recipients - living off the work of others. Socialism is never fair or moral.

capital gains
Why do liberal politicians never learn? Whatever is taxed will be avoided. Tax capital gains and capital formation will slow down or cease. Capital formation is the engine that drives investment in manufacturing and every other aspect of the economy.

Remember the exise tax of the 90s? It was only going to be on luxury items and was only going to affect the rich. The problem was that the rich stopped buying luxury items. In our area, we are heavily into boating from boat building to service to marinas. Several boat buildlers decimated their workforce, marinas laid folks off, one friend of mine had been a successful yacht salesman for years and suddenly found himself looking for another career. Sure showed those rich, didn't we? I know of not a single rich person touched by that tax but a whole lot of middle and lower class folks took a hit.

lilly
Most HSA plans pay for annual physicals, etc., without tapping into the HSA. Further, the tax break to business for providing health insurance should be ended, with that break being given to individuals. This would make one's health insurance portable and not linked to employment. When that happens, look what happens to the numbers of uninsured that your ilk decries.

But then, what do I know? I'm just an M.D. with 21 years of private practice experience and who owns his practice which provides health insurance for its employees. Oh, and I have an HSA policy.

My out-of-pocket, taxable healthcare expense is way down.

Obamacare
If anyone wants to see where nationalized health care will take them, watch this:
http://www.freemarketcure.com:80/brainsurgery.php

The Constitution does not allow the government's intervention in anything Obama wants. He expects the government to take care us from the cradle to the grave, from the womb to the tomb. And in order to do it he will steal money from those who have earned it (the "rich") and give it to those who find it more convenient to do nothing but allow the government nanny to take care of them.

As for student loans; hey, don't use that as an excuse to avoid giving to charity. My mortgage still allows me to give to charity. If you take the loan, don't whine about it. Work your way through college and don't expect others to pay for it. If more people did that the cost of college wouldn't be so high. Its cost reflects that the gov't pays huge amounts.

Glenn

individual freedom or collectivism
A wonderfull summery of what is really at stake with candidate Obama. The quote from de Tocqueville is spot on as well. In fact, every citizen seeking to understand the American character would do well to read all of "Democracy in America," it is a classic of insight and as relevant today as it was in 1835.

Generousity
To be unselfish, big-hearted, magnanimous,selfless.

Give me your money so I can be generous.

They feel everday they get up they are donating their time to you, therefore they do not have to make their own monetary contributions.

Hillary donates Bill's old underpants.

BO and Al not much cash.

One of the huge problems
with trying to be a self-sustaining, self-reliant American is that the government (elected officials) keep changing the rules on us.

When I was in my late 20s, I realized that no company and no pension was ever going to take care of me. I had to prepare to take care of myself for the duration of my lifetime and especially for those years after I ceased working. I began to save -- voraciously. I paid myself first. If I got a bonus at work, I always saved it. I became incredibly thrifty in my consumer purchasing. I succeeded too.

But much of the money I saved, I invested -- a lot of it in stocks. It's one thing to invest a chunk of money in stock, make a profit, and pay 15% on the profit. It's another thing to pay 25% or 30% or 40% on the profit. And of course, the BIG problem is -- you initiate your life-plan under Rules A. Then some lunatic socialist Democrat like Barack Obama gets elected, the lunatic Congress changes tax laws, and you have to LIVE on those investments under Rules B.

I am just an average middle class American who believes in self-reliance and plays by the rules that were in effect when I started. I CANNOT afford the lunatic "generosity" of Socialist Barack Obama. He will end my retirement and force me to go back to work to support of a bunch of shiftless do-nothings that he wants to put under the control of Nanny State.

lilly - cheapskates
Many studies have already shown that liberals are tightwads and do not give charitably. Whereas conservatives do give and quite generously.

In addition, liberals earn more money than conservatives.

I guess it can be summed up as liberals are selfish and conservatives selfless.

Health insurance DRIVES UP COSTS!!
my doctor has to raise his costs 72% for insurance handling and gives a big discount if you pay out of pocket.

BTW: Studies show that a lot of the preventative health care does nothing but enrich those that are providing it. WASTE OF MONEY!!

Bob C What?
Bob C---I don't know which country you live in but most people purchase nice houses even though they have student loans still to pay off (which takes an average of 10 years). Nice attempt.

Let's see I will take these one by one
Health Care:

Why do socialized countries like France, G.B.,
have cheaper health care and the same life
expectancy. I opposed health care reform in the
1990s because I thought the free market would
show the world that we could have the most
relatively inexpensive and best health care in
the world. (I do acknowledge that perhaps our
courts/liability system have something to do
with the price.)

Capital Gains:

Methinks, 401Ks used after retirement and
college savings programs used for college will
get exempted.

Charitable giving:

"The most recent return, for 2006, shows that Obama and his wife Michelle reported wages of about $430,000, plus another $507,000 in business income, mostly from book sales. Their tax bill topped $277,000, and they received a refund of nearly $41,000. They also gave more than $60,000 to charity."
http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2 008/03/obama_posts_tax.html

That's about 10% giving after taxes.

Trusting the people:

Well, I trusted the health care industry to see
the situation for what it was - that many
Americans wanted government funded, that means
taxpayer funded healthcare - and take appropriate
steps to drop prices and keep up quality. This
did not happen since my health care costs have
gone up well over the cost of other things.

The other thing I would like to stress is that
whoever takes office what I would most like to
see is a $0 yearly deficit. This has not been
the case since the hated, this includes me,
Clintons left office.

Instead of being against tax and spend people
of either party I support them over
representatives of the people who spend more
than they tax. This is a conservative principle.

lilly and HSAs
Contrary to your characterization, an HSA has NO deductible. (I know -- I have one.)

What Mr. McCain's proposal is, in fact, is that people carry catastrophic health care insurance with a high deductible, and then use the money in the HSA to pay that deductible when the time comes. Personally I use mine to pay the deductible for my prescription drugs, to pay the $300 extra not covered for my eyeglasses (which covers only $200 every 2 years) and recently for emergency dental care on a Sunday.

If you understand in the least, tiniest way what the purpose of insurance actually is, i.e. TO COVER THOSE HIGH COST UNEXPECTED (repeat UNEXPECTED) medical events in your life, you will see why an HSA makes perfect sense. Out of your HSA you cover physicals, mammagrams, and doctor visits, for example; when little Joey breaks a leg sliding into first base, you use it to pay the deductible -- and when newborn Susie is born prematurely, your insurance pays for her UNEXPECTED high-cost care and your HSA makes up the difference.

If you google AAFLAK, you may understand this concept better. Give it a try.

another thing on charitable giving
from personal experience I can say it is often
under reported because you'll need proof if you
are ever audited. You don't have proof you don't
report it.

when were the students loans paid off
An earlier post raised a very interesting point:

When were Obama's student loans fully repaid. If seems to be well before the year 2000, yet in 2000 and in the years after (2001, 2002, etc) the Obamas still only gave about 1% of their income to charity.

Yet he's blaming student loans for his lack of giving. Amazing. People should really be talking about that.

RED
That's BS.

First of all, if the student loan is so big that the payments are bigger than the mortgage (as Obama claimed) the bank wouldn't give him the mortgage.

Second of all, anyone is was making enough money to be able to pay student loan payments which are larger than their mortgage payments is not "most people." It's a load of crap.

Nice try.

As a conservative,
a Hillary or Obama presidency does not scare me as it does most conservatives. Why? Because we have been on a slow course to socialism anyway the last 40 years. It creeps up on us without anyone noticing it, and consequently, there is no objection. That is dangerous. It's like a slow cancer that sneaks up quietly on you. When you find out about it, it's too late. With Hillary or Obama, Americans will get a crash course in socialism. These two ultra liberals will try to grow government to unprecedented levels. Like HillaryCare, they will try to do it all in a relatively short time. By doing so, the American people cannot help but notice their income taxes go up by another 15%. They cannot help but notice gas prices go up to $7 a gallon due to additional taxes. In fact, every facet of life will be taxed to the gill. That is the wake-up call we drastically need. I am much more afraid of a McCain presidency because he is part of the slow cancer I am speaking of.

everyones"facts" fallacies
You have obviously taken "Sicko" to heart, but it will pain you to learn that all is not as good as you thought. Medicine is so unattractive a career in Great Britain that the vaunted National Health Service has to recruit and import any warm body with an MD degree. The majority come from the Middle East, a region not very kindly disposed to Europeans and the English. Or did you not wonder why the fortunately unsuccessful bombing attempts in London last summer were carried out by doctors from the Muslim world? It must come as a great comfort that your medical care in your last years will be provided by people sworn to your extermination. With any luck they are better doctors than bombers.

youhopes post retirement and college saviings programs will be exempted. Sad to see someone sooo naive.

Mr Right is right. The insurance industry is the culprit in the astronomical increase in the cost of health care. When I opened my practice in 1976, health insurance was cheap and paid well. Today it is prohibitively expensive and it takes two fulltime employees to extract the money to pay for the services I provided three or four months ago. The profit margins of those who provide health care continue to shrink, but the insurance company executives enjoy obscene salaries, bonuses, stock options, and golden parachutes when their incompetence finally forces the board to terminate them. I plan to get off the grid, and I will see patients for health maintenance on a modest cash for services basis.

Don't you just hate it when other people are generous with your money?

Interesting how my wife's
recent out-patient surgery was going to cost $23,000; if we billed it on our insurance, but only $5,000 if I paid cash!

I guess they were going to charge the insurance company for my wife's surgery and maybe a few others that didn't have insurance or the means to pay.

I paid cash!

The Limits of Hope ...
is the name of the main article from the April edition of National Review. It is an eye-opener concerning Mr. Obama and his wife. Here is one of her comments:
"We need a leader who's going to touch our souls because, you see, we are broken. He will demand much of us. The change Barack is talking about is hard, so don't get too excited, because Barack is going to DEMAND (emphasis mine) that you, too, be different."

Oprah Winfrey states that Barack is The One - because we don't simply need politicians who can tell the truth, "we need politicians who know how to be the truth."

His Messianic approach is heralded throughout the article. We left a church years ago because the minister we listened to likened himself unto an equal with Jesus Christ. Yes, we walked out and never looked back. (That church has since ceased to be.)

The thing to remember is "Obamania is doomed to fail for the same reason all such movements are doomed to failure: You can't create a heaven on earth."

If this man is elected to the presidency, no one can say "I never knew ..." when he begins his sideshow of taxing us to extinction and his socialist worldview of the United States. Like Jeremiah (the Prophet in the Bible) who sat down by the waters of Babylon and wept for his beloved Jerusalem. I weep for my beloved America.

Obama's Generosity
1. Obama's healthcare policy is weak. I agree with Blackwell here. HSA's are very successful for families and individuals who opt for them. And its bad enough SS will be gone before I retire, don't touch my 401k too!

2. Blackwell should be ashamed of himself for his other point. Although I don't mind the disclosure of charitable givings (via tax records) for presidential candidates, it is the epitome of self-righteousness to judge whether or not someone is giving enough of their money. This is a personal, moral choice.

And how does he calculate the value of community service? Obama was a community service leader before he joined the state Senate. He was a worker, organizer and helped many poor people in Chicago have a voice at City Hall. What $$ value would Blackwell give to that? It's not all about dollars.

$300K is not chump change, but it's not riches for a family of 4 in Chicago. Especially after taxes (which of course Obama would raise if he was prez so...).

These are two Ivy League grads. Michelle said that they didn't pay off those loans until Obama was paid for his last book.

Who knows what other bills they had? Debt? Private school tuition? What about savings? Sick parents? What about gifts or favors they've given that they didn't claim or tell anyone about?

If they had given 10% to charity and it was disclosed that they were up to their asses in mortgage, auto, credit card debt, etc. Mr. Blackwell would be criticizing Obama for not dealing with his own financials before he starts giving all his money away.

It's just not anyone's place to decide what is enough. Stick to the issues.

Student Loans
We all know how Obama owned a hugh home while paying off hugh student loanns---don't we??

All of Lilly's remarks
are pretty much centered on herself. She just wants to make sure she gets "hers". Always wanting something for nothing while proclaiming her generosity. That's why she doesn't care if Obama never gave a cent to charity, neither has she. Don't worry Lilly, these entitlements aren't going to change anytme soon. We'll keep paying for your kind while your kind takes the credit.

Lilly's misunderstanding
Once again, ignorance tries to trump reality.

Dear Lilly,

Please take the time to research before you comment. All HSAs are coupled with High Deductible Health Plans. Virtually, all the HDHPs have preventive care built in at no cost to the consumer. You see, the health plans want to keep people healthy and want to keep them out of hospitals with their attendant high costs. Check your facts before commenting. I have an HSA with a HDHP and it allows me not only to save on premiums, but also to choose with whom and where I spend.

If you think Obama's idea of federalizing health care is so great, explain why Canadian regualarly come to the US for care. Oh, now I remember. They can't get care without interminable delays and waiting in line.

For example, the waiting time at some facilities in Canada for maternity care is more than 9 months. Better plan well! ;)

Bob C
Only one sentence will suffice..I would love to see your charitable giving stats for 2000 forward.

Beyond Obamas beauty
I just read an article sent to me by a relative
about Obama...and the Anti Christ....and I was
wondering where you had gotten your information.
I am reading my trusty old bible now...it is\
pretty old....and I am trying to find where it
says that the anti christ will be of Muslim
descent...and in his forties....that is pretty
scary...

Liberals Don't Understand Math Do They?
According to Lilly, "it doesn't take a CPA to figure out that Cheney gave so generously to charity for the purpose of tax relief."

Please explain to me why anyone would give a dollar to charity for $.50 in tax savings? I suppose 6th grade math must have been too tough for you.
