Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Senator Barack Obama recently gave us a disturbing foretaste of the contradictory doublespeak we could expect under an Obama presidency.

Last week, a deeply disturbed young man went on a criminal rampage at Northern Illinois University, murdering several innocent people before taking his own life.

Mr. Obama spoke out last Friday on the tragic event, and exposed the crucial disconnect between his rhetoric and his politics.

Speaking of his determination to do “whatever it takes” to end gun violence, Mr. Obama nonetheless acknowledged that the Second Amendment secures a right to individual citizens to keep and bear arms.

Noting that some argue the Second Amendment only grants state governments the power to arm National Guard units, Mr. Obama said he rejected that view in favor of the widely held belief that the Second Amendment—like the rest of the Bill of Rights—involves rights held by American citizens.

The Drudge Report last week even carried the story with the title, “Obama Supports Individual Gun Rights.”

But that title was wrong.

Because later in that same story it says that in the same news conference where he spoke of an individual right in the Second Amendment, Mr. Obama also said he supports the DC gun ban. This is the absolute ban on handguns and readily usable firearms in the city of DC that is at issue in the case District of Columbia v. Heller, currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.

I’ve written about that case before, as have others. The DC gun ban is a complete ban on having any sort of readily usable gun in your own home. You cannot have a gun at the ready in your house in DC to protect yourself or your family.

Yet while Mr. Obama says he supports your Second Amendment rights, he also says he supports that gun ban. He went on to say that local governments should be able to enact any gun control laws they consider necessary to end gun violence, and that any such measures are constitutional.

What kind of gun rights does he supposedly support? What kind of “right” do you have, when the government can completely rob you of 100% of the exercise of that right, anytime they decide they have a good reason?

That’s like saying you have the right to worship as you choose, but the government has the power to ban attending church. Or that you have the right to free speech, but that government has the power to stop you from speaking about any subject it wants. Or that you have the right against unreasonable searches and seizures, but that anything the government wants to search at your house is automatically reasonable.

A right that the government can completely take away at any time is no right at all.

So to say that the Second Amendment means you can own guns, but that the city where you live can ban all gun ownership, then you have no Second Amendment rights at all.

Last week I wrote that I have never in my lifetime seen a major presidential candidate whose rhetoric is so far removed from his policy record. Little did I know that he would give me a perfect illustration of that point the very next day.

This is what Americans could expect from a President Obama. He’ll wax eloquent about your rights, but then say government can take away whatever part of them—or all of them—that it wants.

It’s the disturbing pattern that’s starting to emerge of Mr. Obama announcing a principle or a goal, then endorsing policies that are the exact opposite of what would promote that principle or goal. It’s political-doublespeak. It’s Orwellian. In fact, it’s Clintonian.

Look for this pattern across the board. This is how he’ll empower private markets, by increasing government control. He’ll preserve our private-market healthcare system, by having government take it over. He’ll lower taxes, by raising them. He’ll cut government, by increasing government spending. He’ll create jobs, by raising taxes and fees on business. He’ll protect our results in Iraq, by abandoning that country. He’ll defeat the terrorists, by stopping attacking them and sitting down to negotiate. He’ll support our allies in Pakistan, by invading them with military force. He’ll do whatever it takes to stop threats to our nation, by immediately announcing that he’ll never use our ultimate weapons and by stopping our government from listening in on terrorists’ phone calls.

I hope nine months is enough time for the Americans to catch on to his rhetorical sleight of hand. Mr. Obama has shown what he thinks of your Second Amendment rights by endorsing the DC gun ban last week.

I wonder what he’ll say next week. It’s a long time until November.

this is scary
I'm weirded out by all this Obama hysteria. I just heard someone talk about how Obama can do more than "fix America," she said he could "fix the world."

What are these people talking about?

Now I read this, talking about Obama saying that he supports my rights, but that government should be able to take it away at the same time. You can't have it both ways.

When will people wake up to what Obama is saying?

Senator, You're No Jack Kennedy
Take a look at "Comparing Obama to JFK" at http://comparingobama2jfk.blogspot.com

Barack Obama made good ideas die
Barack Obama is bringing more and more division to our country in pitting young against old, the people vs. Washington, etc. Last night in his Houston speech, he said, “…the problem that we face in America today is not the lack of good ideas. It’s that Washington has become a place where good ideas go to die.”

He’s trying to make his critics and those more knowledgeable than him the bad guys as he continues to play Pied Piper to our youth. Yet he’s one in particular who made good ideas die in Springfield as an Illinois senator. Nurse Jill Stanek tells how good ideas died in Springfield –good ideas and infants in Illinois.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=51 121

At my age
(26) id say 75 percent or more of my friends support Obama. To tell you the truth, the man is scary. There is Obama hysteria, people passing out when he passes close to them, everywhere. Have you ever seen a candidate so successful in appealing to every interest? He tells the gun haters he is against guns, he tells gun rights supporters he supports guns, and everyone believes he is on their side.
If you believe in the Anti-Christ, this guy looks like he could handle the job.

Maybe...
...Maybe Obama believes in local control. If the citizens of DC don't want guns in their town, and vote to that effect, and the vote is strongly upheld by the local police, then so be it.

But I notice that Republicans are absolutely hysterical on the subject of state's rights and local control---until one of their own issues comes along, and then they want the state to force guns into a reluctant community. They want the state to intervene between a woman and her physician when both agree that abortion is the best option. They want the state to mix in when Grandma, Grandma's family, and Grandma's doctor all agree it's time to let Grandma go. They want the state to police people's intimate lives, saying who can marry whom. So, all in all, it seems that it's Republicans speaking with forked tongue, and not Obama. Go Obama.

Obama Cult
Laides and Gents, I want to welcome you the Greatest Magic show on Earth! In case you missed it in Houston, You will have a chance to see it again in Ohio! Prepared to be Amazed, Dazzled, And even alittle faint! Move over David Copperfield! Move over Cris Angel and David Blaine! It is time for Obama! OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH! This guy is nothing more than another cult leader in disgues. If you do not Believe me? Let's ask the Branch Davidians and the People's Temple and let's see!

I agree
Hey I'm with Free Speaker, Solo610, and Gino; something isn't right here. This is weird. It's like a cult or something, the Obama hysteria.

Look, we all want some compromise and a little congeniality in Washington. But it's a two-party system for a reason -- because one worldview or the other wins.

We WANT our politicians to mix-it-up a little. We WANT to decide if either the liberal OR conservative worldviews are better for our nation. We WANT some competition, some conflict to choose one worldview, or the other.

This hope / change thing is weirding me out too.

Why so freaked?
For every person who says Obama can "fix the world" is a nut job who says Bush is doing God's work. Each is equally freaky.

Can't anyone here concede that maybe, just maybe, his popularity is a sign that the American public (the real American public, not just the microcosm of Townhall posters) is ready for someone to get excited about, to have their morale boosted a little. The average American knows he doesn't carry magic in his pocket, but the idea of another 4 years of a republican presidency is just too much to bear, and like it or not Obama is the complete antithesis of that. That is why the word "Change" is brought up so much and guess what, it works, people want change.

If posters here want to classify his status as "cultish", "freaky", and "Branch Davidian like", which is amuses me in a chicken little sort of way, that is fine, but instead of calling his supporters sheep, hypnotized or whatever. Don't discount the last 8 years that have got us to this point. By a leader who I heard described by someone once as a man who could "fix the world". Your right, that does sound freaky.

I never contradict, but I do
I was curious as well at why a politician in an election year gets an article written about him for making contradictory statements. Is that really suprising from any politician? Bush, Gore, Kerry, McCain, Clinton, Carter, Nixon, Dole, Dukakis, pick one, any one and you will find a documented contradition. Thanks for the illuminating article on things I already know. How about an article on how peanut butter is made? At least I would learn something from it.

Hey Ken, here is a scoop for tomorrow. I hear Obama eats his lunch at 10:30 AM but refuses to call it "brunch". Go get em' tiger. I also heard that McCain (and you didn't hear this from me) doesn't floss EVERY day. I can't wait for tomorrow's column on things I already know.

Washington DC ban
While not intending to take issue with Obama's doublespeak, and I may be mistaken, the Federal Court of Appeals overturned the DC law, declaring it to be unconstitutional back in March of 2007.

If that's the case, then that's the law unless and until the Supreme Court says otherwise. Further, the law in place even before it was overturned did not prevent ALL firearms, the law was directed at handguns registered after 1976 but did not prevent a homeowner from other firearms like rifles, or shotguns.

I think the author has overstated the case and has used a poor example to illustrate his point. There's lots of other facts which can be brought to the table that are more defensible.

And to Lilly.........no, it would just be wasted words, forget it.

Weird because
Weirds us out because Obama pretends there's no two-party system in the US; and yet he's got people who seem to be equally hypnotized, passing-out in his presence.

Whether or not Bush is doing "God's work", people know he understand the two-party system - plus he's not wandering around monotonically repeating this montra... hope.. hope... hope.. hope... change.. change... change.. like cults do...

.. when this change supposes that it's healthy to have one, single, monolithic worldview in Washington. It's not healty - and it should be obvious to everyone; yet this body of people continues to Night of the Living Dead follow Obama around with baited breath.

Beware Charisma
The word charisma refers to a rare trait found in certain human personalities usually including extreme charm and a 'magnetic' quality of personality

When we start to worship any political figure because he or she exudes "charisma," we are in trouble. This attitude infuences us to project special traits and abilities on to the individual which may not be present.

Strip away the "cult of the personality" and analyze what is left. In other words, let's vote with our brains not our emotions.

Thank You, Lilly...
For demonstrating the inability of liberals to think.

Yes, conservatives believe in states' rights -- within the confines of the Constitution. The Constitution does not give them the right to abridge our freedom to keep and bear arms. "Forcing guns into a reluctant community" is a nonsensical statement -- we are not forcing you to own a gun, but we don't want you keeping us from the same.

Yes, conservatives believe in protecting the lives of the innocent -- and abortion is not healthcare, it is the murder of babies.

We also are wary about giving people the right to kill their "loved ones" just because they are sick. Where does that end?

Regarding same-sex marriage, any homosexual "couple" is free to walk into a church and have a marriage ceremony performed and consider themselves married. They just don't have the right to demand state sanction of that "marriage."

Excellent Article
This is an excellent article. Although I live in New York, I was born and raised in Ohio, and I financially contributed to Ken Blackwell's campaign for Governor. I hope there is still a future for Ken Blackwell in elective office.

K Trout
I don't think you have a chance of learning anything.
Your type is the very reason this country gets in bad shape.
You lie and make "facts", and those of us who are not in the Obama cult are a little more than fed up with idiots like you.
Either tell the truth or shut up.

Strip away the cult of personality
--What's left in Obama's case is one extreme-left worldview.

Obama's position in the two-party system he opposes - is the most extreme-left one; one that would put Saddam Hussein and his sons back in power immediately, if Bush hadn't killed them; become good buddies with the President of Iran; stand by and watch partial-birth abortions; put judges in the courts who would make Ruth Bader Ginsburg look like Maggie Thatcher; and as Ken Blackwell acknowledges here - ban our guns.

--Extreme-left positions which would quickly eliminate Obama as a serious candidate -- no wonder he opposes the US two-party system, preaching One World government in Washington.

"Strip away the "cult of the personality" and analyze what is left. In other words, let's vote with our brains not our emotions."

-- great points, Jamble

It's just Obama's way
of "keeping hope alive". By making sure it doesn't become a victim of gun violence.

No wonder this fraud rarely says anything meaningful. Whenever something of substance does slip out it's hard leftist ideology.

He might even be more of a leftist than John McCain. Oh man, we are in serious trouble --whoever gets elected.

Surrounded by liberal fools
...Maybe Obama believes in local control. If the citizens of DC don't want guns in their town, and vote to that effect, and the vote is strongly upheld by the local police, then so be it.

But I notice that Republicans are absolutely hysterical on the subject of state's rights and local control---until one of their own issues comes along,
************************************************

Go back to school, liberal. State and local governments CANNOT pass a law that abridges the Constitution. In case you are not bright enough to understand the term "abridge", it means "to remove or make less"

One party system
Obama preaches change to a one-party system of government; he opposes the healthy exchange of ideas / competition we get with the two-party system we have now -- the one we've become the lone world superpower using.

One party, One World government in Washington - where no one questions Obama's extreme left positions - is what he seeks. When you're political platform is national homicide, you demonize Washinton DC, so you can become its savior - not have to expose your true political platform to voters.

But what's healthy for the United States of America - is opposition of worldviews, competition, conflict in Washington. Not One World government.

Small Donations Add Up for Obama

Obama Pulls In $36M In January, More Than Clinton And McCain Combined

NYT-A cluster of cramped cubicles, tucked away in a rear corner of Senator Barack Obama’s campaign headquarters here, serves as the heart of a fund-raising machine that has reshaped the calculus of the 2008 election

Mr. Obama’s finance director, Julianna Smoot, who has helped him raise more than $150 million so far, does not even have her own office. A Ping-Pong table is the gathering spot for Friday lunches for her team.

The setting, which has the feel of an Internet start-up, is emblematic of how Mr. Obama, of Illinois, has been able to raise so much money. On Wednesday, the Obama campaign will report to the Federal Election Commission that it collected $36 million in January — $4 million more than campaign officials had previously estimated — an unprecedented feat for a single month in American politics that was powered overwhelmingly by small online donations. That dwarfed the $13.5 million in January that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York is expected to report Wednesday and the $12 million Senator John McCain’s campaign said he brought in for the month.

Lilly
Your time has come Lilly....it is time to let you go. Leave townhall forever.

if he doesn't win
If Obama doesn't win, will people burn our cities as they have done whenever they don't get what they want? Will we then back out and allow him to take the presidency just so that they won't burn our cities?

Lilly
If you were to Have lived in Illinois during his tenure, you would not have to ask if maybe it's because he believes in state's rights. He doesn't. He believes in the socialization of government. You have to stop putting your beliefs into someone who is not really telling you what he believes. You have to actually take a look and listen to what he is saying. C-Span has had his wife on quite a bit and she talks a lot about socialized government.

DO YOU REMEMBER
the cult leader that had all his followers poison themselves? Hussein Obama will do a different version of that. He will disarm the people, then open the door for the Islamo-fascist-terrorist murderers to come in and murder everyone.

Obama Pulls In $36M In January
But I thought McCain Feingold took the money out of politics! wink wink nudge nudge

I think we are in trouble in November no matter who wins. We have to try to figure out which candidate is the farthest LEFT, no real choice here for conservatives!

I cannot stand Hillary, her personality, her voice, her politics, her husband, her attitude. Obama is a very scary Marxist and his cult following is VERY scary. He sneezes or blows his nose and his cult applaudes. And I would have NEVER picked McCain as my candidate.

To get me to vote in November you will have to "taser me bro"

Mr. Blackwell
As a person, who is "Sick and Tired" of the second amendment debate, allow me to suggest, vote for McCain. You "Two for a Penny" writers, are not going to vote for the Democratic nominee, anyway. Also, the stupid group, that you seek to persuade is fading. If you do not trust our government,I here Cuba has an opening!

Lilly and all you left wing socialists
I know you've heard this before, but if you hate America so much (evident by your posts, especially those about letting the government basically remove all our rights and totally take care of us) - LEAVE! You and your ilk are EXACTLY what's wrong with this country and why sheeple like you with follow these nuts over the cliff!! It will be a real shame to have a totally inexperienced left wing nut President turn our wonderful nation into a third world country - and that's basically what will happen in any Dem gets the job.

killer
would you have us believe that you do trust our government?

Pray tell, why?

speechless...
Saw a pollster on tv interviewing voters about why they favor their particular candidates, and the young gal that spoke of Obama was so breathlessly adoring, she could hardly put her sentence together. What kind of hellacious spell has been cast on these people?

Weird doesn't even begin to describe it.

Guns
If Guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

pjal
You're partially mistaken, friend.

The DC law bans all handguns, even if they are broken. For long guns (rifles and shotguns) the law requires that the guns be unloaded and either disassembled or disabled with a trigger lock. Any ammo you have must be locked in a separate container. So what they author said is completely accurate, because it would take you 5 or 10 minutes with the lights on to be able to reassemble your gun, unlcok the ammo, and load the gun. No use during a break-in or home invasion.

Yes, the DC Circuit held the DC gun ban unconstitutional. However, since SCOTUS has taken the case, everything DC Circuit did is on hold, and will be entirely replaced by whatever SCOTUS says in its opinion. When a higher court acts, it totally replaced/overrides anything where its opinion overlaps the lower opinion. In the case of this lawsuit, the overlap will be complete.

“They want the state to intervene between a woman and her physician when both agree that abortion is the best option. They want the state to mix in when Grandma, Grandma's family, and Grandma's doctor all agree it's time to let Grandma go.”

And liberals want the state to intervene between a woman and her physician when both agree that she doesn’t need additional health insurance. They want the state to mix in when Grandma, and Grandma’s family agree that she should her house, her business, and her money to her family. They want the state to step in when Grandma says she don’t need no “social security.” They want the state to interfere when a worker agrees to a wage and benefits package with his employer…

Guns
If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

Lilly, I notice that you are all about the power of the federal government to dictate many things to us, and to overshadow the power of city governments. Unless that is, a local government decides to ignore a right that you disagree with, then it has the power to trump the constitution in favor of left wing ideas.

If a candidate was saying a local government had the right to put a strong right wing idea into place, you would be screaming for the federal government to go do something.

What a hypocrite you are.

Obama supporter are nuts
They faint when he speaks! They applaud when he blows his nose! They speak of him like the second coming, while putting up pictures of the mass murderer Che Guevara!

This guy scares me. Not like Hillary does. We know what Hitlary wants. Obamamama’s scary because I don’t know who’s behind the curtain. He’s associated with communists in the past, and clearly taken their advice on “what this country needs” and how to achieve his goals. So who’s advice is he taking now? What would his cabinet really be like? He finally came out with a rather lengthy list of proposals that made Hillary blush. Who is he going to work with to get this stuff done? There is absolutely no way he’d get half of it done, but that doesn’t stop his supporters from singing his praises to the highest.

No you don't
..Yes, conservatives believe in protecting the lives of the innocent -- and abortion is not healthcare, it is the murder of babies...

As long as you support the continued use of air strikes in Iraq that kill the innocent, then your rhetoric is hypocritical and irrelevant.

A backlash
Obama's popularity is a backlash from the last 8 years of the Bush Administration's mismanagement of everything they touch. It is a reaction to Karl Roves 51% strategy. To the promises of Republican Leadership in Washington that failed to deliver. The the trickle down that did not trickle down, to the happy talk about victory that was just around the corner and the realization of a decades and billions of dollar committment to a country whose leaders don't want democracy. It is a reaction to Katrina, FEMA trailers poisoning their occupants, lead paint in children's toys, $3.00 a gallon gas, tainted pet food, Enron, Walter Reed, the subprime crisis, and healthcare costs rising at three times the rate of inflation.

Obama may not be a perfect person but he has a very low bar to meet to given the record. Hillary's problem is that by positioning herself in the middle she through she could make herself appealing to moderates and independents.

No wonder the montra this season is change. As to Obama's comments about the second amendment. Many conservative believe in the first amendment but recognize it has limits. The same can be true of the second amendment.

killer
you think the second amendment issue is fading away?

just wait till scotus comes down with their opinion in the dc gun ban case.

let me just assure you that "fading" will not be a word that comes to mind when you see the reaction.

Coupla questions
He will change America. Change the world.
Just curious whether he changed Illinois at all..?

How does someone who is the most extreme idealog on his side of the spectrum "unite"?

Just a couple of questions.
(Note: I don't particularly value unity. I think too much of it would indicate that we were cowed and beaten or brainwashed. There was alot of unity at Jonestown, and in 1938 Germany).

Of course his tongue is no less forked than his opponent. It's just that the dems are not aware of that.

Notice there are no quotes attributed to Obama, just the author's statement that Obama supports the gun ban. Generally, when actual quotes aren't provided, the possibility of taking something out of context, or the possibility that th author's conclusion is incomplete is a very real possibility.

Can someone refer to an actual quotation from that news conference to support the author's claim? Or should we just accept something not in evidence as fact and proceed to call Obama the anti-Christ?

Your comments are very good up to the last.

The reason(s) for not allowing him in or near the white house are too numerous to mention. The U.S. can ill afford any of the present candidates, least of all, Obama bin Hussein. Regardless of who or should we say WHAT is elected, the next four years are going to be tough sledding. And imagine that the candidate for one of many reasons is unable to finish their term. Who will be VP and who will be speaker of the house.??. Nancy Pelosi.??. Mr $400.00 hair cut from N. Carolina.??.

Who would Hussein pick as a running mate.??. John Kerry.??. I see nothing but trouble no matter who wins. If only we could line up the three ducks in a row and put them in a carnival........??.

God save America, if he will.... He helps those who help themselves.... Are we still worth His trouble.??.

Yea, taft et al....

Obama bin Hussein is full of promises, all empty words.. Gone with the wind of tomorrow's morrow..

Obama is just as pro-America and Christian as you and me. Don't let the right-wing fool you.

There can be no words more empty than the immature and mindless termination of Obama as Obama bin Hussein.

Is this the lame story that Obama knew a guy in Hawaii that hung out with him a while named Frank? Is it the same Frank and in Obama's book? And, does hanging out with someone at an early stage in your life, make you automatically of that persuasion? The whole story his a hundred holes in it.
"According to Kincaid, Obama is a commie because when he was in high school in Hawaii he hung around with a black poet that he called simply “Frank” in his autobiography, and there was a black poet in Hawaii named Frank Marshall Davis who briefly and years before joined the Communist Party."

Maybe...
...Maybe Obama believes in local control. If the citizens of DC don't want guns in their town, and vote to that effect, and the vote is strongly upheld by the local police, then so be it.
- You can't violate the constitution by fiat of a group.I would like for you to produce one documented case where the residents of DC voted to ban guns from the district...votes of a council would not count...

But I notice that Republicans are absolutely hysterical on the subject of state's rights and local control...

- Acutally, we are against the federal gov't taking away states rights as enumerated in the constitution.

...---until one of their own issues comes along, and then they want the state to force guns into a reluctant community.

- Pleasee cite me an example of forcing guns into a community.

They want the state to intervene between a woman and her physician when both agree that abortion is the best option.

- We want the feds to turn the matter back to the states and the peoples who live there. Much like you claim that DC residents have voted to outlaw ownership of guns.

They want the state to mix in when Grandma, Grandma's family, and Grandma's doctor all agree it's time to let Grandma go.

- Is Grandma in a condition where she is dead except for machinery, or is grandma still viable with care and someone is just looking to save money or get their hands on an estate early?

They want the state to police people's intimate lives, saying who can marry whom.

- We don't really care about peoples intimate lives. Those can be conducted and supported by those people who are haveing "intimate" lives. But when you want the state to sanction them...then the state should get involved.

So, all in all, it seems that it's Republicans speaking with forked tongue, and not Obama. Go Obama.

- Yes by all means Go Obama, and take the other idiots with you!

Whoa! Wait a minute.

Obama said that Christian leaders who talk about abortion and gay marriage have "hijcaked" Christianity. How do you respond to that? What the heck kind of rhetoric is that? Hijacked? Who is he, as an elected official seeking the highest office in the land, to say that almost one third of all Christian leaders have hijacked a religion?

Your generic assurances fall flat against the record of what Obama says.

Are "we" the government?
Robert Novak in his column this morning admitted that he and his partner supported the policy of the United States government during the cold war to overthrow democratically elected governments by despotic military men who would be on our side in fighting communism.

Clearly, Novak's column makes the point, that the government is not always the people.

So, the question of individual gun rights versus the will of the people versus rights supposedly given by God (they weren't but that's a discussion for another time and place).

Conservatives are conflicted. As Fred Thompson said about abortion, "It's up to the state's" to make that policy determination. He is against abortion; thinks its murder, yet is supportive of states legalizing, in his eyes, murder.

Conservatives are in favor of local rule except when local governments make policy that conservatives don't agree with. Here in Colorado a couple of municipalities passed policies having do to with homosexual rights. Conservatives then manipulated a statewide election that nullified the local decisions.

So, is Blackwell against local government? Does Blackwell say that the DC government is acting on its own and doesn't represent the wishes of its citizens?

And what of George Will's column today, when he says that Edmund Burke told his constituents tht they elected him to use his best judgment, not to represent what they thought was best? Would Will defend the DC government against Blackwell?

And what about those individual rights? The constitution instituted a government, so our individual rights actually are given to us by the federal government. Is Blackwell saying that Federal law trumps local law?

Conservatives are soooo confused.

No one knows who Barack Obama is
We only know Barack Obama wants change, and he's the most extremely liberal voting politician in the US Senate.

We know that most liberals support gun-control; and it's been reported that Obama supports gun-control too. But then, since Obama only talks about hope and change, no one knows his true positions on much of anything, for sure.

Obama's only been around for a few yrs; he's a recent arrival on the public-scene, and he isn't specific about much of anything; so all this support for Barack Obama and his extremely liberal worldview - based on his voting record - is based on unfounded trust in what ??? This unfounded trust in almost nothing is what makes Barack Obama's supporters a weird, cult following of a "self-professed" Savior of Washington DC, who's unknown and destitute of miracles.

Ever hear of mentoring, it's all the rage these days, you know an older adult works with a youngster, trying to steer that one in the direction he/she should go. It can have a lasting effect on impressionable young people. If it didn't the left wouldn't get it's knickers in a twist if a hint of Christian values comes in contact with a young mind full of mush. Indoctrinate them with the Humanist religion, or the Marxist religion, teach them all the sins of the Founders but NEVER, NEVER EVER expose them to
anything like the Judeo/Christian heritage of this country. My my, you didn't

There is no such thing as Judeo/Christian heritage.

There is a Judeo heritage and a Christian heritage, and actually many Christian heritages.

I introduced the term "HIJACKED" into popular discourse 2 years ago.I used it at a meeting, of elected officials.I used it, to discuss how President Bush had "HIJACKED" the power advantage, by using war to avoid giving economic supremacy to China. If you would spend more time reading and less thinking without a factual basis, you would know the church and it's rhetoric is CHANGING.This is according to a Mr.Barna, an authority on such matters.WOW...FACTS are not in short supply, only those who are willing to use THEM.

for Kilgore Trout
Kilgore Trout asks: "Can't anyone here concede that maybe, just maybe, his popularity is a sign that the American public....is ready for someone to get excited about, to have their morale boosted a little."

Yes, absolutely.

I'm distressed by the lack of optimism and positive, uplifting messages coming out of conservatives these days. They seem to be much better at defining what and whom they are against, rather than what they are for.

Reagan's "Morning in America" optimism is dead in the GOP. No one is talking that way anymore. Not Bush, not McCain, and none of the columnists on TownHall either.

Reagan used to speak of the end of the USSR and the Communist threat, back when no one else thought it was possible. Why can't conservatives be that optimistic about America's future now?

At the VERY least, McCain should be able to promise the American people that if he's elected, al-Qaeda will be destroyed once and for all, and then we won't have to take our shoes off at airport security checkpoints anymore. That he has not done so, suggests that he doesn't have any comprehensive solution to terrorism except perpetual war without end. That's pretty depressing, not a message Americans will vote for.

WHAT SCARES ME ABOUT OBAMA

.....Besides the fact that he is a Marxist "One Worlder" and I don't want to live under Totalitarianism ...is that he is willing to allow the survivor of an abortion to die on a gurney without medical attention ...

Obama
From the rumors I have heard, what is going on between Obama and Larry Sinclair? Everyone seems to be dodging this issue.

Pjal,
NPA is correct, but even he does not go far enough in his explanation. Not only does the DC ban prohibit possession (in your own home remember) of any assembled or operable long gun, it makes it a felony to move an assembled or operable gun from one room to another. That means that even if you could lock yourself in a room against an intruder and put your gun together, you would be guilty of a felony offense if you took that gun out into the hallway to confront that intruder. A perfect example of how liberals want to protect you.

Obama and Scientology??
Is anyone noticing a strange correlation between Obama supporters and Scientology supporters?

Failures of local control
Here are two specific examples where conservatives dropped the ball on local control:

1. Medical marijuana: Local communities, and even state governments, out West would like to allow cancer patients to smoke marijuana to alleviate pain, if their doctors prescribe it. Marijuana is less addictive than morphine, which many cancer patients take. But the Bush Administration said no.

2. James Dobson and his gang of Christian social conservatives have been lobbying Congress for a ban on online Internet gambling. Simply because they think gambling is immoral.

Christian social conservatives do NOT believe in privacy and individual rights. They believe in using the power of government to promote (Christian) virtue.

Freedom implies the right to be free to choose immoral actions. As long as those actions are not hurtful to others. That's part of free will.

As an economic conservative, I believe in freedom.

Freedom implies the right to: Gamble, get drunk, smoke tobacco, smoke marijuana, download porn off the Internet, choose one or more sexual partners of whatever gender and sexual orientation I wish, or visit a brothel.

Freedom implies the right to hetero sex, homosexual sex, premarital sex, threesomes, foursomes and orgies.

And in conjunction with a priest or minister, the freedom to make difficult end-of-life decisions for loved ones.

All of these, WITHOUT the Federal Government mixing in, telling me what is and isn't morally acceptable to THEM.

Proud Liberal,
your last sentence is highly illustrative of liberal ignorance. The Constitution and Bill of Rights state that the government is instituted to protect our PRE-EXISTING GOD GIVEN RIGHTS, and that those rights may NOT under any circumstances by abrogated by government. It is a document delineating what government has no authority to do, not a document giving government unlimited authority to do whatever it pleases. Scary that people like you are not only proud of your lack of understanding of our form of government, but that you vote.

killer
Sorry, but that's just crazy.

Your position is fundamentally and profoundly wrong. You say the "church" is changing.

You may well--as an obvious leftist--belong to some religious body that uses the word "church" and changes its views of right and wrong to suit whatever current social trends are, and waters down its message of right and wrong, and truth and falsehood, to suit whatever the New York Times and MTV and MoveOn.org says those things ought to be.

I'm an evangelical Christian. I believe that the Bible is the Word of God, and I believe that right and wrong don't change based on the latest social fad or political polls.

Therefore the true church does not change, because God does not change, his Word does not change, and the truth does not change.

So I reject the premise of your argument. The church is not changing, nor is its message. And the message of the true church, spanning many denominations in every nation on earth, will still be true and unchanging long after your flawed ideology has been tossed into the dustbin of history where it belongs.

You state" Maybe Obama believes in local control. If the citizens of DC don't want guns in their town, and vote to that effect, and the vote is strongly upheld by the local police, then so be it." - What you say IS the essence of the problem concerning the issue of GUN RIGHTS...rights are NOT something that are granted, controlled or legislated. And the absurdity of the above statement is exactly why so many are concerned for this pacifist tactic of parsing words and playing mind and word games. RIGHTS as recognized by the BILL of RIGHTS is a detailed explaination of what GOVERNMENT CAN NOT DO and SHALL NOT DO....It literally leaves no room for discussion. It is ONLY the pseudo-intellectual and the pacifists/marxists who are looking to throw clouds of smoke and mirrors to CONTROL the populations that want those arguments. Check Obama's credentials. He has none...Save associations with known Marxists and Communists and absolutely NO allegience to anything that even remotely resembles the constitution of this United States of America.

Planting Ground
Try getting your rights without the police power of the government to back you up. Never happen.

The myth of individualism is among the most profound of the conservative myths. Conservatives say "just let individuals do their things and the consequences will automatically be good." Never happen.

But conservatives are also big on the rule of law. Now there is mob justice and lynching justice when individuals take the law into their own hands. But to have a fair, consistent, legitimate rule of law you need a stable and transparent government and judicial system.

It' nice that God gave us rights and the Constitution recognized that our rights are received from God, but just try to assert your God-given rights without the existence of government and see how far that gets you.

"Whatever it takes to end gun violence?"
Has anyone wondered how the Lefties plan to enforce the law if they outlaw private citizens owning guns?

They will of course come after you ARMED and take your firearms at gunpoint.

All the while saying "guns don't solve anything!"

Of course, the real reason that the Left doesn't want you armed is because they want a harmless public that can do nothing as they take over and turn American into a socialist state.

Just Time
You are correct.

The States cannot take away rights that are explicitly stated in the Bill of Rights.

For example, the right to no cruel or unusual punishment: do you imagine that if the state of Texas decided they wanted to torture child molesters they would be permitted to do so?

Of course not!

The Left hate the 2nd Amendment because it enables the citizenry to protect the nation against hostile take over. They are having to take over the slow way and it sticks in their craw.

lilly the fickle
in the past she was an ardent defender of the clinton's but has spurned their affection to take up a new love interest. But pathetic lilly your hatred of everything that doesn't meet your socialist standards is getting boring. You label other areas of the country as either racist or ignorant but the only thing that comes out is your bigotry. That you are now guided to support oblahma and his socialism and to assuage your white liberal guilt don't make a coherent argument. The truth is oblahma is an empty suit with no plans to do anything more than increase taxes spend more money on previously failed plans. His short tenure in the senate has been one of obstruction and not the ability to work with repubs. Oblahma's bootlickers are pushing his canidacy based on only one fact, he is the black canidate. Sinced he offers nothing of substance why should america bank on a naive and inexperienced senator with no understanding of the dangers facing america

Double Speak
One of the requirements for graduating from High School should be reading three pieces of liturature. 1) The Prince by Machivelli,
2) 1984 by George Orwell, and 3) The Constitution
of the United States.

Double-speak has been a feature of Government for a long time. (about 10000 years)

As to the second amendment, one must undertstand the context of the time in which the constitution
was written. The U.S. was mostly frontier, the
Native Americans were more than a "little upset"
about the encroachment by Europeans that was
occuring. The Europeans had their fears too.
1) Attacks by "Those murdering red-skinned savages" (John Wayne's words not mine)
2) Slave uprisings.
3) The U.S. had no real standing army or
national police force (nor did they desire one)
4) The thirteen original states were really
nations in their own view, and only banded together to fight off Great Britain.

Having said that, the REAL brillance of the Founding Fathers, is that they created a constitution that is a "Living" document.
i.e. It can be amended to meet the needs of
WE THE PEOPLE as time and circumstances change.
As far as Mr. Obama's credentials go, he's no
different than any other Politcian ....
To qoute a famous American Patriot;
Malcom X ... "The difference between the Democrats and Republicans is the same difference
between foxes and weasels...they both steal chicken. ..."

What this country needs is a third party that
will implement the will of WE THE PEOPLE.

So Obama believes in local control?

Bam! The locals say no more freedom of speech and NY Crimes!

Let's see how well that goes over.

You are obviously incapable of seeing the bend in the road or the forest for all the trees!

After thought for Planting Ground
Part of my last sentence you refer to was right. The Constitution did institute a government. It did not institute individuals.

I do agree with you on one point about individualism, however. And that is my right, liberty and freedom as an individual to advocate and work toward changing the rules of the game (a la Captain Kirk). It may not be in the Constitution, but one of the things that should have been prohibited to the government by the Constitution is to forbid me from changing the Constitution in whatever way that I see fit.

If you say that the Constitution puts me in a straight jacket and that I can only change the
Constitution in the way the Constitution says I can, then you are no lover of freedom, liberty and individual rights.

Buffy T
I feel the same way about the presidential candidates. There's no good choice for conservatives.

BUT DON'T STAY HOME on election day.

The balance to a bad president is a good Congress (or at least the best we can get).

Support your conservative (or at least reasonable) Congressional candidates and go out and vote for them.

Yes, I'm really sick of the "hold nose and pull lever" voting for President, but don't miss your chance to vote where you can do some good.

devbravo
There is more to the Second Amendment than you're stating. While your points may have some validity, you omitted the main one:

The founding fathers also knew that the only real way to keep government in check was to keep the people armed. A disarmed population is easily controlled... just look to any dictatorship. You see an armed population?

Mr. Blackwell-Great Thoughts!
[From Taft's post]
I am a devout Christian. I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful" Obama

I must admit that I am always skeptical of politicians who use the example of Jesus Christ to support their agenda, as if doing so legitimizes actions that would otherwise be deleterious to our modern society. Case in point: The miracle of feeding 9,000 people only happened once, IT WAS NOT FOR A LIFETIME!! In fact, when those followers who were only followers because of the "free lunch" realized that the only free thing they were going to continue to get was spiritual food, they "ceased to walk with him."

To put this miracle in the perspective of Hill/Obama's campaign promises, will we have to endure 4 years of a presidency which promised "free lunches"-aka health care, tighter gun control, amnesty for illegals, etc.-before people realize that the price that will be exacted for such "freebies" is a price we are unwilling to pay?

Much has also been said about Obama's charisma. Christ had charisma too but it ended up that only those who stuck by him through thick and thin were those willing to be persecuted and/or be killed for their beliefs, and even some of them, like Peter, faltered.

Hitler also had charisma but when it became obvious that the Third Reich was not going to become a reality, he and his cronies "bailed out" in many different ways, as is the nature of true cowards. Toward which end of the charisma spectrum is Obama? Only the voters of America can decide that!

“The myth of individualism is among the most profound of the conservative myths. Conservatives say "just let individuals do their things and the consequences will automatically be good." Never happen.”

Wrong – individual is far from a myth. Even any group is just a collection of individuals. Look at the current infighting in both of the major parties. They are fighting over Individuals, by Individuals. Many represent various groups, but even within those groups, you find competing Individuals. Also, I have not heard one conservative say the consequences will automatically be good. But there will be consequences, and we will face them Individually. If I screw up, I face the consequences. It’s not up to someone else to bail me out.

“But conservatives are also big on the rule of law. Now there is mob justice and lynching justice when individuals take the law into their own hands. But to have a fair, consistent, legitimate rule of law you need a stable and transparent government and judicial system.”

I will agree with the last sentence, as many other Individuals will. But, by definition, mob justice is not done by Individuals, but by a mob. The rule of law is one of the functions of government, laid out in the Constitution. The government is not all knowing, though. The government usually takes 2-5 minutes to respond, or longer. In the mean time, I’ll be trying to assert my God-given rights by myself, Individually, albeit with the assistance of Mr.’s Smith and Wesson.

“It may not be in the Constitution, but one of the things that should have been prohibited to the government by the Constitution is to forbid me from changing the Constitution in whatever way that I see fit.”

And how would you see fit, at the point of a gun??

I watch the debates, do you? I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears, when posed with the question on what to do with Iraq, Obama did say he would withdraw and negotiate. He also wishes to negotiate and meet with all dictators who are enemies of the US.

Even Hillary slapped him down for his answers. It goes to show his inexperience. When Obama speaks off the cuff without his little cards in front of him, he is completely unqualified to run this country and our military.

Perhaps Obama thinks the dictators will scream, throw their panties at him and faint once he enters the room?

Jakota already caught your other missing point on the second amendment. Hitler banned guns. The KKK wanted to ban guns. Banning guns makes it easier to prey on people.

It is very difficult to change the Constitution for a reason. To protect We the People from changes in governmental thought. It seems that the only things that Liberals want to change and evolve is the Constitution.

JamesJ, this brings me to you:

There is a girl who sits next to me in the office, a liberal, and we can politely discuss politics with each other. Although we are on opposite sides of the political fence, I can usually reach her and make her understand the negative effects her party can do to her livelihood.

Not anymore. She has the disease, she is an Obamaholic, and I don't think she can recover now.

I asked her what was it about him that she liked him enough to vote for him. Her answers:

"He's not Bush and having a black president would be the biggest historic event."

I explained what he could do to our hurt country, our economy, our tax dollars, the quality of our lives.

She just shrugged. She doesn't care. It has no impact on her. There is no getting through to anyone anymore.

The day we can cease being the bottom-feeders we are (in the general media)...it is sinful; is the day we may finally live free...with the liberty America was built upon.

Why is this so difficult to 'get'?

I can only urge intelligent people to silently search their doubts about their own candidate and vote for the one who most offers good judgement, good sense, good values. Which one would you most trust in your emergency? Because that's the leader this nation can most benefit from.

But Dear Lord, KEEP YOUR PERSONAL NEGATIVE CRITIQUEING TO YOURSELVES. I, for one, am intelligent enough to research my candidate without being baraged and force-fed your interpretations of your findings.

The media coverage in this country leaves me ashamed to be an American. You should be ashamed of yourselves. News does not voice opinion. News reports: substantiated, events (without adulteration, personal expression (facial or otherwise)or bias.

And you wonder why Mrs. Obama said what she said?
Let me see; When was the last time I really felt proud of my country?

Tears came to my eyes when I shook the hands of Senator John Glenn and his wife, as they proceded to tell me how they met, in their childhood playpens.

The day I met Caroline Kennedy-Schlossberg (fogive my spelling)and her family, and she asked me if I would have a place to stay...
ME!? (She was without accomodations, and she showed concern for me).

What class. That's American. Where is that, today?

Me, me, me. Greed, greed, greed. We are lost, Americans. Get it?

Faith, hope and charity go a much longer way, if good is your honest goal.

SteveL you might find this excerpt somewhat englightening. It's from a letter that I wrote and was published in a newspaper "out west" to disabuse another uninformed liberal of their mis-information.

...In 2005, the uber-liberal Justice Stevens, writing for the SCOTUS majority, cited Wickard v. Fulburn (a nail in the Federalist coffin) in deciding Raich v. Gonzales. The liberals on the court (Ginsberg, Stevens, Breyer and Souter joined by the rudderless Kennedy) voted unanimously to deny Californian Angel Raich her marijuana based on “commerce clause” rationale, which allows the federal government’s intrusion into almost any area of our lives.

Conservative Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in dissent, “Respondent Rachel Raich uses marijuana that has never been bought or sold, that has never crossed state lines, and that has no demonstrable effect on the national market for marijuana. If Congress can regulate this under the Commerce Clause, then it can regulate virtually anything and the Federal Government is no longer one of limited and enumerated powers.”

Enjoy.

Actually, you're the one who's wrong.

The DC gun ban covers all firearms, including shotguns and rifles. Shotguns must be kept disassembled or trigger-locked, and shotgun ammunition must be kept in a separate locked container.

You should check those things before posting a comment accusing the author of making a mistake, when the real mistake is yours.

Proud Liberal
You write: "And what about those individual rights? The constitution instituted a government, so our individual rights actually are given to us by the federal government. Is Blackwell saying that Federal law trumps local law?"

… ummm. The PEOPLE instituted the Constitution, which created a government of the PEOPLE. Our INDIVIDUAL rights are granted by the CONSTITUTION, the same CONSTITUTION that created the government.

Federal Law, indeed, trumps local law: Article VI, paragraph 2, of the US Constitution:

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Law of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

Can you give me any examples of an armed population that kept itself from being controlled by its government?

No. Serously.

Aren't you describing civil war? And in many cases in South America it is a leftist "insurgency" that has the arms and is fighting against a military junta supported by the United States government. Supported and armed and financed by the United States government.

Look at China. It was an insurgency that fought against the dictatorship of Chang Ki Shek.

Look at colonial America. It was an insurgency that overthrew the King's rule.

So, you want an armed population to overthrow tyrants, right? I don't think control enters into it. It's like all or nothing. You have the arms you become an insurgency. But you seem to be suggesting that a citizenry which is armed will scare the government enough so that the government will ameliorate its practices. I don't think that happens. Such governments just arrest the insurgents when they can find them and throw them in jail or lock them up.

Pancho -Doesn't exist
Your 10:25am comment regarding Judeo-Christian Heritage indicates to me that you don't understand the term. Christian heritage or beliefs are based upon the beliefs held by Judaism. Because Christians share this heritage, it is appropriate to combine the two names.

Bush was a uniter too...
And everyone who wanted to be united was; those who didn't weren't and complained about all the flags and lapel pins.

And those who didn't now think we're all going to be united by this empty suit from Illinois -- on the basis of what? He offers "change we can believe in"? Well, I don't believe in it. It's not change: it's the same old failed Socialist nostrums and group hugs, but now it's coming from the non-Hillary candidate. So what.

Yes, America will be better when we can all hug and cry and "believe" and "hope" and "change" together. And if we all unite behind Hussein, we'll all be... um... united. And we'll have change. We hope.

Sickening fascistic drivel, with an Oprah Winfrey spin.

If McCain ever bothers to secure his right flank, the field will be his.

(By the way, to those of you who might bristle when I call him "Hussein", it's because the candidate and I are on a middle-name basis.)

Obama & Gun Control
Obama's comments at a church last Sunday went way beyond your comments in your article. Obama wants a ban on the private sale of modern firearms between individuals. a ban on "Saturday Night Specials" which the ATF has never been able to define, a requirement that firearms bo operable by only their original owner, which is technologically impossible, a ban on gunstores from bieng within 5 MILES of schools and parks, a ban on purchasing more than 1 firearm per month, and felony penalties for the interstate transportation of firearms.
These comments are probably the first time Obama has said anything specific on the campaign trail, and such statements should be reported to the general public.

Proud Liberal
Now you're writing about how we can only practice our individual rights with police power behind us. Ummm.. and when no police are around? What then? Skip our rights?

Using your logic, then, if I want to protect my life, liberty or property, I have to call the police? I can't protect them myself? And if the police are too far away or too busy or just not around, I have to watch my kids killed or my house robbed because I am waiting on the police?

Nope - self-defense, defending life, liberty, property, is in the law, Pal, and everywhere people are allowed to carry guns crimes against people and property decline.

Police are like locks on doors - they keep honest people honest. Keeping the bad guys off your butt requires little individual rights to do so. (It also requires initiative, but Libs also don't get that - always waiting on the Feds to do something for them.)

You think the gun bans in the UK and Australia, and the enormous increases in the numbers and rates of violent crime immediately following those bans aren't linked?

May I repeat myself? It's cute that you're proud, but find some time to educate yourself, too, OK?

an example of "change"?
"Obama wants a ban on the private sale of modern firearms between individuals."

That's interesting, because word has it that at a different time in his life, Hussein had a different opinion on the "private sale ... between individuals" of contraband items.

How did that story end?

Obama disadvantage to blacks

Osama's stance on gun ban is one that denies the blacks in DC ant chance of self protection.

Shell
Get your hearing checked. Obama beats all the candidates in dealing with our enemies.

"These remarks were aimed at Barack Obama, and they are lies. Obama never advocated invading Pakistan with US ground troops. He said that the US should strike at al-Qaeda if it had actionable intelligence about its whereabouts in Pakistan, even if the Pakistani authorities refused to give permission.

This stance is US policy. In fact, George W. Bush implemented it with a Predator attack on an al-Qaeda leader in Pakistan just a couple of weeks ago, an attack that the Pakistani government declined to authorize.

Actually, one of our overly deferential journalists should please get some backbone and just ask McCain what he would do if he had intelligence on Bin Laden's whereabouts in Pakistan and could not get authorization from Islamabad to strike at him.

And I think there is good reason to ask whether McCain helped create al-Qaeda and the mess in Pakistan to begin with. It is time for someone to start holding the Cold Warriors who deployed a militant Muslim covert army against their leftist enemies accountable for the blow-back they created." Juan Cole

Liberal judges have a God-Given right to interpret the Constitution any way they d*** well please. It is their God-given rights as individuals. The Constitution can't take that away from them."

No, Proud Liberal, they don't. Our founders were much too wise (or inspired) to give that much power to nine (or in many cases only five)mere mortals. Their job is not to interpret the Constitution, but to decide whether the laws and actions of government CONFORM TO the Constitution.

The Constitution is supposed to be changed ONLY by the amendment process, two-thirds vote of the House and Senate and approval of three-fourths of the states. You will find no other legal process for changing it.

The runaway courts are a usurpation of unlawful powers, not the exercise of any powers actually granted them.

Focus on what I said.

Obama said it during a debate with him and Hillary.

She smacked him down, exposing his idiocy towards foreign policy. Even a leftist she-devil like Hillary could see what a terrible idea he blathered on about.

New parody. My blog.

I had a student where I teach
ask who I wanted to win the election. I pointed out that we hadn't gotten down to the two nominees, or even the "other candidates" yet.
I then asked him who he would back. He of course chose Obama. When asked why he said because things cost too much and taxes were too high. I asked how Obama was going to cut Health Care costs...he didn't know. I asked how Obama was going to cut energy costs...he didn't know. I asked how taxes were not going to go up when Obama lets the tax cuts expire...he said something to the efect of having business pay for it. I pointed out ho business will just add the cost of the tax onto the price of the good or service...he wasn't aware they would do this.
He said the minimum wage was too low to live on. I asked how a small buisness man was to pay additional monies when their taxes would be raised and profits cut and not let people go in order to pay some more by gov't edict...he didn't know.

He is wondering though.

Actually USMC (Ret) did an excellent job of teaching. Telling would have been been pointless and would have gone in one ear and out the other.

I've seen some silly things come from your keyboard in the past but this latest offering is simply amazing.

""The myth of individualism is among the most profound of the conservative myths. Conservatives say "just let individuals do their things and the consequences will automatically be good." Never happen.""

Maybe on your planet you have a Hive mentality where everyone is connected, but here on earth, no matter ow many people are in a room, they're all Individuals.

""It' nice that God gave us rights and the Constitution recognized that our rights are received from God, but just try to assert your God-given rights without the existence of government and see how far that gets you.""

So you're saying that if I'm in the alaskan wilderness with no government protection around me and some idiot tries to rob me, I'm just supposed to let him because I 'have no rights"?

Dude, that's seriously twisted

""I do agree with you on one point about individualism, however. And that is my right, liberty and freedom as an individual to advocate and work toward changing the rules of the game (a la Captain Kirk). Why I Oppose Obama the Tax Man

Larry Kudlow of the National Review tallies up what an Obama Administration would mean. Specifically:

* He would raise spending by $800 billion
* He would increase tariffs and other barriers to trade
* The capital gains rate would nearly double, from 15% to 28%
* The dividends rate would nearly triple, from 15% to 39.6%
* The top tax on wages and self-employment would rise from 37.9% to 54.9%
* The death tax would explode from 0% to 55%

This is why I oppose Obama, the Great Socialist Re-Distributor of America’s Wealth and Income.

Barackattack
Barack Hussein Obama is a socialist whose mentor was Frank Marshall Davis. He attends a church with anti-American and anti-white leanings.Check it out for yourself.Read what they believe. If he did not agree with their teachings,I doubt if he would have attended there for all these years.
He is a good orator and is mesmerizing his audience when he speaks. They don't care WHAT he says but HOW he says it.He did get specific the other night and to hear him tell it,he will solve ALL our problems, with Big Brother's help.It was scary.
There have been other great speakers who could whip up the crowd. One comes to mind who was the best. His name was Adolph Hitler.Remember him? You do? Remember the pain he caused.Could we be next?

I have often wondered, why my parents forbade my attending state schools.Your post crystallizes their concern.By your logic, the young student was allowed to see the inefficiencies of Mr. Obama. However, when you examine my method, it shows him how to examine the inefficiencies of the WORLD.Base your decisions on fact, not personal prejudice.

Leftists are Leftists
Like any good socialist, gun control advocates could care less about crime. We all know guns (or access to guns) cause crime, like flies cause garbage.

Gun control is all about social control, take guns from free people and you will not be able to stop other rights from being run over. Government does not grant rights, it takes them. Rights exist, rights are God given.

Both Demoncat candidates are socialists, both are empty of any though and just spew the same socialist manure that has been spread since Woodrow's time. Barak is an empty suit with no "gravitas", Hillary is a hack politician of the old school, steal what you want, destroy your opponent and pull the wool over peoples eyes... but we're not that stupid anymore.

Second Amendment
The second amendment does not apply to the states. Most of the other rights enumerated in the "Bill of Rights" do bind the states because they have been "incorporated" by the equal protection and due process clauses of the fourteenth amendment by the Supreme Court, by decision. The SCOTUS has never incorporated the right to keep and bear arms as a prohibition to the states. In other words, each state is free to regulate guns any way they wish. The reason the DC case is important is that it is a Federal creation, and not a state. Therefore the second amendment prohibits the DC city council, or the Congress of the United States from abridging the right to keep and bear arms. That is what they will say in their decision. You heard it here first.

Dear Great Patriot
What purpose would calling Barack Obama names like Osama, or Hussein serve? I don't get it. Are you really that childish?

Tampa Dave noted tax concerns about Obama that have him worried. I would say those are debatable and highly speculative, but at least it is a valid concern with data backing it up.

I highly doubt that any great patriot would ever support or validate such a childish request as yours.

HotPat
Your statement is inaccurate.

The Fifth Circuit has incorporated the Second Amendment. SCOTUS has not yet weighed in on the matter. It doesn't mean that the Second Amendment is not incorporated, it just means SCOTUS has not yet taken up that question. It has not been decided either way.

If the Court applies the same criteria it has applied for other rights, there is a very solid argument in favor of incorporation.

American 'healer' verses Antichrist
Ahhhh...I'd go with the Antichrist. Fainting at his rallies, females swooning, applause when he blows his nose, saying it both ways in the same speech...sounds like 'America' is buying into his kool-aid.

Obama banna the gunna
Keep in mind that Obama has never said that the DC ban, in particular, is constitutional. Dubya has avoided weighing in on the DC law as well. Obama said that cities may constitutionally place certain restrictions on gun ownership. Now this is vague, as all politicians are in this stage of the election cycle when they appeal to the lunatics in their party. Nevertheless Obama is entirely consistent with precedent in regards to the second amendment, and all amendments regarding individual rights for that matter. Every individual right has its limits. Yelling fire in a crowded theater endangers the public safety and may be outlawed without infringing on our first amendment rights because it does not measurably delimit our ability to speak freely. Allowing the possession of unregistered firearms in cities makes it easier for thugs to obtain them and thus endangers the public safety. Outlawing unregistered firearms *may* take effect without infringing on our second amendment rights because it does not measurably delimit our ability to defend ourselves (you may obtain a registered firearm). Of course DC made it too difficult to obtain registration and so effectively infringed on peoples second amendment rights and the law was overturned last year. Here is part of the courts ruling:
"this is not to suggest that the government is absolutely barred from regulating the use and ownership of pistols. The protections of the Second Amendment are subject to the same sort of reasonable restrictions that have been recognized as limiting, for instance, the First Amendment."

As usual, you cannot bin Obama down on this one as hard as Blackwell tries.

Jackpine Savage
The points I'm making - since you missed them - are about the contradictions and confusions in conservative rhetoric.

So, I'll say it again, since you missed it:

If God gave us the right to liberty he gave us the right to change the Constitution whenever and however we d*** well please. You see - now let me spell this out for you - there is a contradiction between God given rights and the legitimacy of the Constitution to take away the rights that God has given us to change the Constitution whenever and however we d*** well please. That's just the God side of things.

On the other side, the Constitution cannot logically set up rules that say you can't change the rules. Of course you can. Anytime, anywhere.

This is like setting up the rules of baseball to include the rule that you can never play basketball, that once you start playing baseball you are forbidden to ever do anything else.

Jackpine Savage
If you are in the wilderness and stake a claim to an acre of ground and a couple of guys come along and tell you to move along because it's their land now - and there is no government - you certainly have only a few choices. The choices you have do not include bringing the police power and judicial power of the State to bear on this dispute.

You may think that God gave you the right to that land, but if they want it bad enough they'll get it.

You've heard about the Gold rush in California where land on which gold was found changed hands three times in one day due to the current owners being serially murdered.

This is extreme individualism. Some conservatives like it.

Jakota
I'm asking you to document your assertion. (If you actually think about your assertion it doesn't make sense).

Hot Pat- you must be a Leftie Lawyer
This is the way you Lefties are garrying out your plan to turn America into a socialist state.

Just chip away at the Constitution a piece at a time until it is unrecognizable, and you weenies will have won without firing a shot.

Well we are fighting back, so you can stop already with the propaganda.

One eye: A and Non-A
This is the only thing I actually remember from Logics. Two different things cannot be the same thing.

Either God is the supreme power or the Constitution is the supreme power. They cannot both be the supreme power. Hence, whatever conservatives say is wrong.

The truth as I see it is that rights are given by men, not God. Hence, God did not create all men equal. Conservatives have a much better argument if they claim that men create all our rights and the Constitution is where a few men at a passing moment in time wrote down their ideas on the subject

Charisma
Charisma is the mark of the beast, specifically of the classic psychopath. They are usually charming, intelligent and charismatic. They are also utterly ego-centric, to the extent that their definition of truth is that if they say it, it is the truth; therefore, in their minds, it is impossible for them to lie. This should sound familiar.

Obama is the cubic zirconium
Obama is the cubic zirconium of presidential politics. He looks good, but upon closer examination, there is very little value there.

disconnect between speeches and policy
It's just mind-numbing how the media swallows everything Obama says. Look at the litany in the article. He makes these generic statements, and then endorses policies that would do the opposite. Yet all the media can do fawn over him. And they just pass it along to everyone without a critical word.

you mean he has contradictory
ideas about bearing arms?

Like, what, every American who has thought about it, except nuts on
both extremes?

I read the 2nd amendment to mean I can have nuclear weapons which
is arms that as I read it I should be able to procure, to keep it and to
bear. This I think is crazy. yet I believe I can have a hand gun, a
rifle, etc. but that is not all that is possible according to the language
of the Amendment:

http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/amendment02 /

The courts have wildly different interpretations to wit:

"[Footnote 1] A sampling of the diverse literature in which the same historical, linguistic, and case law background is the basis for strikingly different conclusions"

The Constitution is tyrannical
in the hands of conservatives.

Men make laws. Men write constitutions. But after they write constitutions the constitutions does not become more important than men; it never attains a brain or will to think and act on its own.

The existence of a constitution does not deprive men of succeeding generations of the same powers of choice and freedom that the writers of the constitution had. That's just plain ridiculous.

If you want to get down to first principles we should be debating Natural Law and Natural Rights.

proud liberal
You don't understand what a constitution is.

As the Supreme Court has made clear, the Constitution overrides any other governmental act. If the people in a later generation don't support the Constitution, they can change it through the amendment process. But until it is amended, it remains the supreme law of the land.

That's not ridiculous, that's just first-year law school.

Better to support McCain
John McCain will put judges in the courts who respect the US Constitution, and who respect the US Constitution's original content.

We only know that Barack Obama proposes vague, non-defined hope and change; Barack Obama seems to oppose our strong two-party system in Washington - where strong competition of worldviews gives us the most successful, healthy system of government in the world.

Also, I'm not supporting Barack Obama; I'm supporting John McCain in this election, big-time; but people here referring to Barack Obama - with names like "Hussein" or "Osama" or names OTHER than his true name: Barack Obama, are utterly lacking in class, and give us Barack Obama opponents bad-names. It's the utmost lack of class, and completely childish. If you're going to oppose Barack Obama, do it on the issues / merits like grown up voters - not on some stupid play on his name "B. Hussein" ... "Barack Osama" - so stupid.

Well, not going back to the 18th century. But arming everbody is a good idea.
That way the crminal element would know that most if not all of their potential victims are armed and think twice before committing any crimes.

The crime rate would be next to zero in no time short.

The university is a "gun free zone" and in CO, we believe in the right to bear arms and defend ourselves from "imbalanced people". The church shooter in Colorado was not shot by a casual onlooker who just happened to be there, armed---he was shot be a hired security guard who was present and armed for the purpose. There is a difference. The argument that armed citizens are the best protection against a criminal shooter and will boldly save the day simply doesn't work. Explain to us what happened at the shopping mall in Omaha. Nebraska is a very gun-loving state---concealed carry is OK--- and a large crowded shopping mall during Christmas shopping season is crowded---it holds many potential armed citizens---and yet not one citizen took out the shooter---they just all gathered up their children and ran like hell. And please don't bother saying that a mall is a gun-free zone when posters on townhall brag all the time that they carry where they please---college classrooms, malls, church, anywhere.

If we need armed guards, we should hire them. But depending on passers-by to a) react and draw quickly b) shoot accurately and c) stick around instead of taking off---too risky.

What you post doesn't make sense. If the woman is sitting with her doctor and they are agreeing that she doesn't need health insurance, who is paying the doctor? Either he is receiving a fee from Grandma or he is on salary from someplace. Even if he is working as a Christian missionary serving Grandma, he still has to be compensated in some way so he can feed his children.

Some people choose not to pay for health insurance because they don't expect to get sick and they'd rather spend their money for fun things. When they do get sick, or have a car accident, or fall off a ladder and break their leg, they usually end up in an emergency room where, by law, they are taken care of. When they are billed theycan't or just don't pay the bill they can end up in deep financial waters. Meanwhile all of us who do have insurance pay higher hospital rates because indirectly we are paying for the deadbeats.

Back to your original scenario of Grandma and the doctor. If you expect her to pay all her expenses out-of-pocket, unless she is Grandma Rockefeller this is unlikely. When Grandma finds herself on Intensive Care for a week, four times within one year, and has a couple of major surgeries besides, her bills totaling $400,000 will definitely get her attention.

"Hope is hope, how do you define it more than that. Obama had definite policy planks. He's on t.v. tonight and will probably explain them a bit."

Hope is very non-specific / uninformative when proposing policies. Barack Obama would be more informative by telling people what he's hoping 'in' or hoping 'for'; is he proposing complete withdrawal from Iraq in a short time period ? If so, what if the US is required to go back to Iraq again and start from scratch ? Is Obama proposing higher taxes ? Is Obama proposing to put liberal judges in the courts ? Is he proposing to cut or increase federal spending ? Is he proposing negotiations with Iran's President ? What would his policy be if China invades Taiwan ? What would his policy be if Pakistan's government and military transitions to fundamentalist Islamic ? What would his policy be if Israel is attacked by its neighbors ?

Barack Obama referring mostly to 'hope' and to 'change' is non-specific and should be confusing to voters - an indication of Obama's inexperience / unpreparedness. It's truly a mystery to me how Barack Obama has garnered so much support with his vague, undefined political platform.

Informed voters know Barack Obama has the most liberal voting record in the Senate in 2007; but he mostly talks about 'hope' and 'change' - so uninformed voters support Obama with almost zero knowledge of what he stands for - other than 'hope' and 'change'. Not a wise way to choose the leader of the free-world, in my opinion.

Barack Obama's name
Yes, his name is Barack Hussein Obama - I know (how could anyone not know - as much as the children of the world parrot it); but what's the point of using his middle-name every time Obama's referred to ??? Is it just because you guys like using people's middle-names ? Or what ?

Plus it still would not make his name "B. Hussein" or something involving "Osama" - would it ???

It's just childish to refer to Barack Obama using his middle-name, or any OTHER name that's not part of his true name; it makes us Barack Obama opponents look like children, with no sense beyond grade-school - surely we can do better than such nonsense ?

It's just more grown-up to be respectful of people, no matter what you think of him/her as a candidate or person - whether you agree with him/her politically or not. Conservatives or Republicans being disrespectful to Barack Obama regarding his name, do not deserve win the election. We can do much better than that childishness.

Listen
Lilly is Silly!!!!

God given rights...
The Bill of Rights recognises certain rights which are inherent to humanity. As a result they are said to be, "...endowed by their creator." This being understood to mean, regardless of government power, lawmaking, and regulation, men will act upon these things which are inherent to their personal and individual desires. Thus they are said to be, “unalienable.” Some may obey out of fear Others will resist and sacrifice their lives, fortunes and honor to oppose them.

Regardless of laws, individuals will say what they think (right of speech). Some will even print it on a piece of paper (the press) Granted, some will do it in secret, others in the public square. Likewise, freedom of religion; Pass all the laws you want, you won't stop people from practicing their faith (e.g. catacombs of Rome). People will defend their life, their property and their freedom by any means necessary; (i.e. keep and bear arms). Guns are simply the most efficient means of achieving that end. The founders also recognized the occasional need to organize as a group (the well-regulated militia) for a common cause (national defense), This is not the sole purpose of gun toting. Nor is law-enforcement. The idea of ‘policemen’ came about as a more efficient way to uphold good in towns. It was easier to hire a sheriff and some deputies than it was for every farmer or merchant to stop what he was doing and come a runnin'. To posit otherwise is absurd and does not require an abrogation of the individual right to self-defense.

The purpose of government is to uphold good and punish evil. This simple concept does not require a law degree to comprehend. Nor does understanding the constitution. To set up a government in order to regulate the minutiae of everyday life is a fools errand. Any government regulating every matter of business and personal activity will result in only tyranny and ruin. Always has always will.

I like to use his full name ,just as I like to use Hillary's full name. What is your problem? So far ,it's a free country.

Founders expected moral agreement
The Founding Fathers put trust in the moral consciences of human beings - who are given freedom, sovereignty, and value by God Himself - and who corporately govern themselves based on that principle first; it's called 'self-government' and it's supposed to be literal.

So the government of Americans is supposed to start from the consciences God built into us, and also from the morality taught to us in the Bible - then to evolve into mutual-consent of the governed. American government is supposed to get its authority ONLY from the 'consent' of the governed - otherwise it's completely moot and void.

Nowadays however, ONE WHOLE POLITICAL-PARTY ignores these basic principles, and decides that this 'seperate entity' of the government (not the mutual human-consent one) decides for EVERYONE what's moral and what's immoral - and writes its own laws on that inevitably corrupt basis.

Meanwhile, the other political-party is so WEAK in understanding the Founding Fathers' original premise (even tho they have a rudimentary idea of it), that they almost completely stand-by and watch the first, zealot party build this idol-of-worship known as "big-government"... also referred to as socialism here on Town Hall I've noticed - tho I'm not sure it's the correct term.

So the true crisis in America - is in the basic understanding of the Founding Fathers' original worldview / vision for American self-government; one party is polar-opposite opposed to it, and bent on destroying the Founding Fathers' worldview/vision of self-government - turning it completely INSIDE-OUT; while the other party is merely sniffing-the-fumes of the Founders' original, brilliant worldview/vision - so they have not the wisdom NOR the conviction to fight for it. It's all sad, really.

Hopefully we won't end up with the political-party that despises the Founders' worldview, controlling ALL 3 branches of government, come January.

If you like to use Obama's middle-name, you're right you're free to do it.

I was talking about people going out of their way to be disrespectful to Obama - how it's lacking in class and childish.

The facts
Here's an idea. Let's look at what he actually says:

When the massacre happened at Virginia Tech, I think all of us were grief stricken and shocked by the carnage. But in this year alone, in Chicago, we've had 34 Chicago public school students gunned down and killed. And for the most part, there has been silence. We know what to do. We've got to enforce the gun laws that are on the books. We've got to make sure that unscrupulous gun dealers aren't loading up vans and dumping guns in our communities, because we know they're not made in our communities. There aren't any gun manufacturers here, right here in the middle of Detroit. But what we also have to do is to make sure that we change our politics so that we care just as much about those 30-some children in Chicago who've been shot as we do the children in Virginia Tech. That's a mindset that we have to have in the White House and we don't have it right now. Source: 2007 NAACP Presidential Primary Forum Jul 12, 2007

I believe in keeping guns out of our inner cities, and that our leaders must say so in the face of the gun manufacturer's lobby. But I also believe that when a gangbanger shoots indiscriminately into a crowd because he feels someone disrespected him, we have a problem of morality. Not only do we need to punish that man for his crime, but we need to acknowledge that there's a hole in his heart, one that government programs alone may not be able to repair. Principles that Obama supports on gun issues:
Ban the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic weapons.
Increase state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms.
Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks with firearms.

Voted NO on prohibiting lawsuits against gun manufacturers.

Women, guns and Obama
First…
Women who support gun bans are a great mystery to me. How many women are assaulted and/or murdered by men every year? Why would you want to deprive yourself of the one weapon that might prevent your becoming such a victim? So I don’t want to hear any more whining from women who complain about their victimization, if in the next breath they’re going to assure that such victimization continues by demanding that women be deprived of the only means to protect themselves.

Second…
Unfortunately the Obama crowd has taken on the characteristics of a mob, and mobs are notorious for having a momentum of their own without anything resembling thought or rationality.

It’s not an accident that all non-supporters of Obama are honing in on the same criticisms. To wit, on the rare occasions when he says anything of substance, his rhetoric doesn’t jive with the history of his actions. Never has it been more important for people to remember that actions do speak louder than words.

Finally…
I’d vote for Oprah before I’d vote for Obama.

Yankee Sue
Thank you for looking up the record.

Appreciated. Does anyone else know real facts, we might form our own opinions from?

Black Hillary?
Mountain Rose, I'm with you. I look at Michelle Obama and think, "Black Hillary."

Obama=Biggest boost to NRA in 10 years
If anyone is going to push the NRA membership past 5 million members again, it will be this mental midget. Mr. Gun rights supporter has supported every gun ban and confiscation law that has ever crossed his desk. He isn't for local control, he is for big government control. In 1999 he supported an outright ban on every semi-automatic firearm produced-handguns, shotguns, and rifles. He has also has supported legislation to strip all CCW holders across the country of their state issued licenses with a blanket federal law against CCW.

Wonder if his administration will order gun owners killed and burned out of their homes like the Klintons did? He'll give new meaning to "fired up, ready to go".

Me, after reading this I think I'll load a couple hundred more .223s before I go to bed tonight.

Lily, get your facts straight
Ummmm.........maybe Lily should go READ the articles about the church shootings again. The "security guard" in question was a parishioner with a CCW license who decided to come back to the afternoon service with her gun and keep an eye on things.

I have a lifetime issued CCW license from the FREE state of Indiana, and I will continue to pack my Glock or Kahr until the day I die, regardless of any laws that "leaders" like Mr. Obama support.

No Support of Guns
I doubt very much that B. Hussein and others of his ilk desire an armed American public. If he studied any United States history (as opposed, say, to African history) in his Ivy League schools, he probably knows that the 'right to bear arms' is not so that Americans can necessarily defend themselves against petty thieves and small-time thugs, although that is a healthy life-style choice in many situations. Instead the intent is defense against an intrusive government of elected thieves and congressional thugs who would attempt to enslave the people to a welfare state, steal their wages and property, and misappropriate constitutional freedoms as they see fit. Do any of these people support gun ownership? Of course not.

And if anybody is still reading . . .
I'll put it succinctly by simply pulling a quote from the above article, which put it in a nutshell --

"A right that the government can completely take away at any time is no right at all."

Save us from BHO.

what are they drinking?
I've checked the grocery section on drinks; not too much kool-aid is missing. Where is he getting all those voters? Have they all had a lobotomy? The only logic I see is, Mr. O has his head in a dark hole and he sees no problems to address.

Blackwell - Yea, Obama - Nay
Not the best of Blackwell's columns but point taken.
As I read the comments here, I just couldn't help but add one myself.
So Obama and his fans want socialism. Well, America's founding fathers didn't seem to. I suggest those of you that are fond of socialism go live in a socialist country for a year and tell us what you think.
China tried it. Read up and see how it worked. Check out old Russia.
We need to get back to the priniples that made this country great. And the divisive Obama isn't going to do that. His admittedly close relationship with his pastor isn't encouraging. Not very unifying. Oh, that's right. They were close for 20 yrs and the pastor was a mentor and my goodness, how could Obama have any idea the man felt this way! (someone fell out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down) I won't mention other questionable associations here.
We'll have less national security. Forget border control. And the economy will worsen. Middle class backs & spirits will be broken.
Obama has a lot to learn. Needs to grow. Because right now, he's not thinking straight.
When we value life, decency, fairness and common sense, we'll be back on track. And that's not likely to happen this election year.

Obama's Silver Tongue is Forked
I read approximately 40% of comments posted and quite honestly, I am extremely surprised. I did not realize so many folks dislike Sen. Obama. Please don't attack me,but if you must, that's cool - I like him over Clinton any day. Just an observation, but many comments from folks here are raging on Obama's relationship with that idiot pastor. Seems like you all want Clinton to win since she keeps shouting, pointing and waving her arms about every chance she gets to attack the Obama/pastor relationship. Or, perhaps you want McCain? Just wondering.

Reply to Lilly in #5
I'm not your typical Republican, in fact very libertarian, but can't find a Libertarian candidate that a.) has a chance of getting elected to national office, b.) believes any issue other than legalization of hemp is important. I, therefore, subscribe to the philosophy that the politicians can't force me to go to church, but they damned sure can force me, under threat of prison, to pay taxes. Thus, I generally vote for the candidates I believe will keep their hands out of my wallet and nose out of my bedroom the most. This gets more difficult with time, unfortunately, but the Republicans still hold the edge.

The reason local governments should not be able to set their own policies on gun control is simply that 2nd Amendment prohibits it, and the Constitution specifically says that powers granted to the federal government via its provisions are not the purview of lower governments. The other issues you mention, are not Constitutionally protected rights by any normal interpretation of the Constitution. In the case of abortion, the Supreme Court made it a Constitutional issue by accepting Roe v. Wade. The other issues are not Constitutional issues, either by writ or by usurpation. I personally think the government should stay out of the abortion issue, but the Supreme Court made it a Constitutional issue by fiat.

Nontheless, there is a very big difference between a right explicitly protected by the Constitution, and by extension, the Bill of Rights, and issues for which the federal government has no jurisdiction.
