Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Next week General Petraeus will report on progress of the war. It will likely mark a turning point in America’s role in Iraq, and will refocus voters on what they should be looking for in a president. It also reminds us that the elephant in the room in 2008 is the global war against radical jihadists and their reign of terror.

Iraq may well be coming full circle. Our stunning military victories in 2003 degenerated into an ineffective plan for securing and stabilizing post-Saddam Iraq. After serious missteps, consternation from all corners, and a bruising midterm election, President Bush gave the country a new defense secretary, a new commanding general, and a new strategy.

Now all but the most obstinate war critics and partisan snipers are compelled to admit that things in Iraq are getting much better. Just this week Mr. Bush was meeting in a relatively peaceful al-Anbar province — which months ago was written off as a lost cause — with local Iraqi leaders that used to be fighting against us. Such a visit and meeting would have been impossible before the troop surge, and shows better than anything how successful the surge has been.

As this progress continues, the issue will evolve from military victory to political stability. As American troops take out insurgents and more local Iraqi leaders turn on the terrorists, it creates breathing room for political leaders to work out a way to live together. While it’s clear that Iraq won’t be a Madisonian democracy, there has to be something better than bitter distrust and being dominated by their neighbors. And even if the al-Maliki government has been disappointing, local leaders are stepping forward and making a difference.

The fact that we’re now talking about Iraqi politics instead of street violence is more evidence of how much better things are there.

And now presidential candidates will likely be coming full circle as well. First, consider the Democrats.

Hillary Clinton will be faced with a difficult dilemma. She’s an ardent liberal who understands that that classification creates doubt that she can effectively protect the nation against a brutal enemy. She’s also a divisive politician that many Americans simply don’t trust. So on one hand, she needs to recast herself as a tough, hawkish moderate.

But her party base is currently dominated by radical anti-war activists, many of whom not only oppose efforts in Iraq but also Afghanistan and the war against terrorism. If she doesn’t pander to them, they will put their money and votes behind Barack Obama and John Edwards.

Yet Mrs. Clinton’s poll numbers may allow her to do that. Having reopened a substantial lead over Mr. Obama, she’ll likely track more to the center to woo moderates.

Unfortunately, for Mrs. Clinton, however, Mr. Obama has proven himself to be a formidable candidate who may well close the gap again, having more money than she has, and showing the magnetic personality that she lacks. Now that he’s gotten over his early mistakes he’s in a position to climb again.

Mrs. Clinton will do everything she can to keep Mr. Obama from getting close. Until that happens, look for her to talk like a warrior, distancing herself from her liberal record.

She may even create a Sister Souljah moment like Bill Clinton in 1992, turning on one or two radical groups that she’s currently allied with — like DailyKos — to align herself with Middle America.

Now, look at the Republicans.

There can be no doubt that the chief beneficiaries of progress in Iraq are Rudy Giuliani and John McCain. This is Mr. McCain’s top issue as a war hero, and for Mr. Guiliani it gets back to his proven ability to stand strong and be calm in the midst of tragedy and crisis.

This also creates a challenge for the governors in the race, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. They will have to make the case that they’re ready to handle these overseas challenges.

The Petraeus report is certainly something Mr. Huckabee needs to consider closely. With his very strong showing in the Iowa Straw Poll, he’s now accepted as a viable candidate. Money is pouring in, fundraisers are being held, and he’s pushing forward in additional states. It’s his chance to play in the major leagues.

Mr. Huckabee should invest some of these newfound resources into expanding his foreign policy team, and add national security and foreign relations material to his stump speech. He’s gotten people’s attention with health care, education, and family. Now he needs to do it with Iran and North Korea.

America is looking for a commander in chief who can fight and win the war on terror. This is a conflict against radical Islamic militants, waging a global jihad against Western civilization. Every candidate needs to explain what they would do, and every voter must demand a president who can keep us safe.

Obama
I would like to see him put up a stronger fight against HC. Somebody needs to pin that woman's ears back.

Forget what you think you know
Al Qaeda and Iranian surrogates are biding their time, catching their breath and building their insurgency groups'depth and breadth. Bin Laden's greatest victory would be to determine the direction of the presidential election. By the time the election rolls around, the violence and American death toll in Iraq will be worse than ever. If the Republicans think they can win in '08 on the terrorism issue, they are dead wrong.

The real elephant in the room, the one that ONLY the republicans are talking about, is Amnesty. The Republicans need to shove this 80% issue down the throats of the Dems. The 12 million that will turn out to be 20 million, the 20 million that will bring five "relatives" each, the $3 trillion that will become $5 trillion, the unprecedented run on resources (energy, food, police and heathcare).

This is the issue that can make or break America. A win for thrift-minded Republicans is a giant step toward correcting all of the problems in this country. A win for the Dems is a guarantee that they will never lose another Presidential election and that a bankrupt, poverty ridden, socialistic, police state will be the end result of 200 years of toil.

next week will be interesting
I'm interested in hearing the testimony next week, and then the responses to it. I saw that even Katie Couric reported yesterday or so that there's definite security progress in Iraq.

I bet a lot of Dems are just going to ignore it. I saw Congresswoman Tauscher (sp?) of California, making remarks that she saw no difference when she visited Iraq a couple days ago.

What do you bet that she wrote that speech before she ever went on the trip, and that a lot of Dems have already written their "reaction" to Petraeus' testimony next week?

u pachyderm libturd!
"Our stunning military victories in 2003"

like Omaha Beach or the Battle of Stalingrad?

the vaunted Iraqi Army dissipated like a fart in the wind! Our courageous soldiers have been trained to beat better armies than the 'cut and run' Iraqi Republican Guard!

huhhhh????? again
"partisan sniping"

General Shinseki got fired for telling the truth that the USA needed 500,000 troops to secure Iraq.

Generalismo Cheney had intelligence that the "insurgency is in last throes"

Generalismo Rumsfeld was a bottleneck between the US military and the Pentagon in accurately accessing the problems in the field.

Lincoln FIRED General McClellan in the Civil war after only 7 months of incompetence!

Zapoodat...
Grow up.

What do you want? A vice president who would say, "We can't do it," like you? Is that what you want? Yeah, that's good leadership. As for Rumsfeld, that's a profound statement. Of course, you were there in his office, you were there at the Pentagon shuffling policy notes. Spare us.

Just because General Shinseki said something YOU want to hear doesn't mean he's right. There's all kinds of generals, and Shinseki is a peacetime general who thought it would be cool to give everyone in the Army the same black berets the Rangers wore.

As for Obama, he's a front. He's not getting the nomination, and he's there to make Hillary look stronger than she actually is. His statements are reckless and insincere, effectively staged.

Blackwell's right - Iraq is the Elephant
The Democrats have realized Iraq could be trouble for them for some time now. They're strategy has been to convince Republicans that Iraq is a losing issue for Republicans; so we've got to get out of Iraq, accept a humiliating defeat, admit we're all idiots that made the country more prone to terrorist attacks; and maybe in about 2 decades the country will consider Republicans again. If not - we're screwed.

That became obvious after the release of that stunning piece of idiocracy from something called the "Iraq Study Group."

In truth, the Democrats are looking like they're in a box now. We will still be in Iraq next November. It also looks like Iraq may look like a real viable legitimate state by then. They've become so vested in an American failure, they can offer no foreign policy strategy in Iraq that is consistant with the past 2 years of defeatism, their left wing kook base, and the American people who HATE TO LOSE.

Looks like its' global warming and health care to the rescue for Dem issues!!! This election is going to get very interesting!

More than politics
There was a democrat rep who got caught telling the truth when he said if General Petraeus gave a positive report it would be bad for the dems. Sorry I don't have the exact quote but the basic message is that dems are invested in defeat, period!

The war on terror is the elephant
I think that Secretary Blackwell meant the War on Teror is the elephant in the room, not the war in Iraq. I think he would say that Iraq is one part of the War on Terror.

Military vs police actions
The military defeated Saddam totally. There only option was to go in hiding and create this kind of chaos. We have been in a police action for several of these years. The "surge" really meant clean out an area of terrorist and then hold that area. The holding will continue until such a time that the Iraq military can hold it on there own. The problems wont end until the Iraq's figure out they are better off with an elected central government than continued tribal strife. The strife has been exacerbated by outside influences and corruption (not a new phenomena we have some of our own). How long will it continue? Until its over! We (Americans) look for instant fixes. I am afraid that does not apply here. Just look how long it took for our own government to take hold and settle down. Our tribal strife wasnt resolved till 1865 so if the clock started at 1776 it took us 89 years. If we are truely locked in a global struggle with Islamofacists how long should the struggle continue? Again I say until its over and we prevail

The Elephant in the Room
The Dems are already subverting the upcoming report on Iraq, calling it "The Bush report". This just serves to underscore the Dems disdain/distrust for our Military and utimately...their inablility to use the military to KEEP US SAFE!

Radical Left;allied with Islamo-Fascism
All of the anti-war groups like UFPJ, CodePink, WCW, MoveON, ANSWER want surrender. They think if we are nice to throat-slitters they will be nice to us. WRONG!!!!

The surge is working in Iraq and we here in this country have to surge with it. Support the troops and their mission. copy and paste or click on http://www.moveamericaforward.org
Join the effort with the cross country caravan, attend a rally in one of 27 cities, or donate whatever you can afford. Support our soldiers who believe they can win.

Roadkill58
The Dem who said a good report from Iraq would be trouble for them is James Clyburn. Blackwell wrote about it sometime in his couple columns.

The elephant is the world wide Jihad
and it worries me that democrats seem to dismiss the threat as a mere police action. The recent situation in Germany whereby a tremendous plot was prevented along with numerous such situations around the world is only the beginning of what we face. Victory in Iraq will prevent a base for the terrorist from being established there and will provide a free zone in the midst of numerous countries that wish the west ill. Ron Paul in the debate last night was dead wrong when he reduced the Iraq war as a consequence of our presence in the middle east. War against us is because we are not muslin therefore the enemy according to muslin holy writings. Inevitably, with time, attacks would have come in greater volume then those already committed. They were at war with us and we didn't realize it.

Democrat policy on Iraq
Contrary to popular belief the Democrats are committed to a principled policy on Iraq. This policy is but one branch of their master policy. And that master policy can be summed up as follows:

Deny Bush anything that can be called a "success" or an "achievement".

That means they have to claim that "the war is lost" (Harry Reid). They have to refuse to reauthorize the tax cuts, FISA and the Patriot Act. They have to denigrate the progress in Iraq after refusing to meet with Petraeus (Reid and Pelosi). They have to travel to Syria, wear a burka, and kiss the feet of our enemies there (Pelosi).

Their Presidential candidates have to vie for the honor of being the first to propose legislation demanding troop withdrawal from Iraq (Clinton and Biden) and then change their position when the 'surge' appears to be succeeding and claim "I'm your girl" if you want fight terror (Clinton).

Decades ago, when the Supreme Court was first asked to rule on the constitutionality of anti-porn legislation they came up with a standard that literature that appealed primarily to the "prurient interest" was not protected under the First Amendment unless it had "socially redeeming" value.

I submit that the Democrats master policy of denying Bush any successes for the sake of denying Bush any successes does the country great harm and has no "socially redeeming" value.

Nick, unfortunately you're half right
The insurgents and Al Qaeda probably WILL pull out all the stops as the election approaches. But this will be bad for Democrats, good for Republicans and sad for our country.

It's not a bad thing if Republicans win the White House in the middle of a war. They are the ONLY party SERIOUS about our security. It's just going to be sad that it will take attacks by our enemies and the deaths of our countrymen to wake up a somnambulist citizenry.

I Don't See Any Elephants

The phrase "The Elephant in the Room" refers to an obvious thing that everybody is ignoring. I don't think that any of the candidates is ignoring the War or terror and/or the War in Iraq.

So far
the only thing I hear about the war from the Dems is not how to win it, only that it was a mistake. The real mistake is burying your head in the sand about terrorism. Yeah that will sure show them!

lolo
the problem with oblahma is that he is even less authentic than the missus clinton. How can you be amodern thinking when you are locked into a 60's mentality. Has oblahma put forth anything new and decisive? I still maintain that edweirdes and oblahma were put on board as the preseason jv team to get the missus clinton ready for the varisty ghame against the repubs. The problem was they offered no competition and the missus clinton is now thinking she is battle tested and is showing a very false sense of bravado. She had her typical yelling at the mike in iowa this past week-end. She hoilds her own against the very weak dim contenders but once the primaries are over and full attention is focused on her and her positions and her wacko statements things will change.

The real elephant in the room
is the Dem/GOP/MSM propaganda machines that want to keep power amongst themselves in order to bring about the one world government all these elites believe in.

If you consider it, you will see how effective they are. Ask yourself, could I vote for someone other than a major party candidate? If you say no, you cannot, then you have been duped into believing the myth perpetuated by these elites using the old tactic of telling a lie often enough until it becomes accepted. The lie is that only "they" have wisdom, knowledge, and experience, only "they" can govern. Once you accept this, you give them a virtual lock on power in Washington and re-enforce their belief in their own invulnerability.

As for you, well, since "they" consider you just a common man who didn't go to Yale or Harvard, you can go home, shut up, vote for the lesser of two evils while holding your nose, and by the way, don't forget to send in your tax dollars.

If we fall for it again, hoping for the different result that never has and never will come about, the we deserve the evil that we get. If you want your inheritance back, you need to do something totally different. Visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG, and see how we can do what we need to do in order to restore our great nation to its founding principles. Check it out. What's to lose? The elites have already stolen our birthright, let's reclaim it. Thanks, Joe

Elephant in the living room ,nothing
If America is the living room, we have an entire jungle with a herd of elephants and tigers.

Scattered across the floor knee deep in rattlesnakes.

Man, this analogy brings lots of creatures to mind, like Mike Savage and his "Political Zoo".

Flaming liberal
You ignored my comment and others like it that suggests that the "elephant in the room" is the one ignored by democrats in spite of the ovious. Radical muslims have been at war with us for years (Under Clinton, truly ignored) and now it is obvious by the attacks around the world that militant islam is on the march. Witness today the reports from their websites indicating messages similar to those from just before 9/11. Do I hear any democrat alarm? Of course not. If we just pull out of Iraq now everything will be OK and we will be safe. This is alarming and this is the "elephant in the room."

Calling ALL Vets
Rush has audio of Senator Schmuck Schemer (L-New York) went on the floor of The US Senate Wednesday and said The Surge has nothing to with improvements in Iraq. THE IRAQIS DID IT THEMSELVES! This Lying, Liberal, SOB denigrated our troops on The Floor of Congress! Rush later reported that he was trying to take it all back today.

Bottom Line, Look closely at Schemer. He has no lips, like other belly-crawling reptiles!

KenYou just do not git it
"This is a conflict against radical Islamic militants, waging a global jihad against Western civilization.

The battle is not against militants its against ISLAM aqnd every last Muslim who not one can you trust.

Bro wrote:

The truth is that none of these organizations care about the troops OR the war on terror, except to the extent that it can be manipulated to get the democrats back into power. The same could be said for the Dems themselves. I suspect that if you drilled deeply enough into these organizations, you would find people with billions of government spending on the line, if they can only get the Republicans out of the White House.

THis is just another side effect of too much govt spending. It creates polarization and special interest groups whose sole aim is to get more and more money for their benefactors, even at the cost of tearing the country apart.

Bush had a chance to cripple govt spending, but tried to be a "fence mender". And the only way politicians soothe over problems is by spending money. We need some who will put on the brakes, and tell the public why they are doing it.

Schumer's hateful, disgraceful rant
This is what Senator Charles Schumer, the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate, said on the floor of the Senate yesterday.

"“This is a policy of last resort! This is a policy of desperation! And let me be clear: the violence in Anbar has gone down despite the surge, not because of the surge!” The lack of protection for these tribes from al Qaeda made it clear to these tribes, ‘We have to fight al-Qaeda ourselves’. It wasn’t that the surge brought peace here. It was that the warlords had to create a temporary peace here on their own. And that is because there was no one else there [US soldiers] protecting them!”

This man is a traitor. I have heard that he tried to "backtrack" on these remarks today, but I am not accepting any explanations or apologies.

Larry Craig has to resign because he played footsie with an undercover cop, but this traitor gets a pass for denigrating our troops and lying?

It's time for all you libs who claim to support the troops to stand up and be counted. Schumer won't resign just because a bunch of cons like me say he should. Stand up and show us how much you really care about the troops. Run this traitor out of DC on a rail.

I Agree With Sen Schumer

He's right. It is at best a leap of logic (with a backflip or two thrown in for good measure) that Sunni tribes in Anbar would take up arms against Al Queda BECAUSE more American troops have arrived. It seems more reasonable that they are protecting themselves because no one else was doing so. Maybe it was unfair of Sen Schumer to say "in spite of". Perhaps "independently of" would be closer to the truth.

No, he's NOT a Traitor, he's NOT an 'appeaser', he's calling it like he sees it, and he makes alot of sense.
