Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Listening to President Obama and former Vice President Cheney give their respective national security speeches Thursday put me in mind of John Gray, author of "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus."

Different men, different planets. Or are they?

Obama, standing before the U.S. Constitution and speaking to members of the Judge Advocate General's Corps, was the calm voice of confidence, redeemer of reason. He spoke loftily of American ideals and invoked our better angels.

Reiterating his case for closing Guantanamo, voted down by the Senate a day earlier, he also said there's no guarantee that terrorists won't attack again or that Americans won't die as a result. But, we'll win anyway. How?

By being good people.

"Because the terrorists can only succeed if they swell their ranks and alienate America from our allies, and they will never be able to do that if we stay true to who we are; if we forge tough and durable approaches to fighting terrorism that are anchored in our timeless ideals."

Thus spake Venus.

And I thought: What a good man. This is what America needs.

Then came Cheney. Speaking at the American Enterprise Institute, he pulled no punches in his criticism of the Obama administration's security policies or in defending the Bush administration's.

His voice was also calm and reasonable, his remarks simultaneously sharp and blunt. Cheney said he remains a strong proponent of enhanced interrogation, which he said was used with only "hardened terrorists after other efforts had failed." The interrogations "were legal, essential, justified, successful, and the right thing to do."

Cheney was especially forceful in criticizing Obama's "selective release" of documents on the interrogation program without also releasing the intelligence those interrogations produced.

"The public was given less than half the truth," he said. "The released memos were carefully redacted to leave out references to what our government learned through the methods in question."

Hail, Mars! I'm thinking: This is just what the nation needs. Someone who shoots straight (well, figuratively speaking).

So: Soaring, inspiring rhetoric on the one hand and gritty determination on the other. Two very different men, worlds apart in nearly every way. The old-timer with decades of experience and a shiv for a smile versus the newcomer with a moonbeam in his eye. Which one is right? Is the answer only a matter of ideology or is there some larger truth therein?

Perhaps both are right in their own time and place, given their experiences and perspectives. From the relative security of hindsight, it is easier to say what we might have done differently. As Cheney put it: "Watching a coordinated, devastating attack on our country from an underground bunker at the White House can affect how you view your responsibilities."

It may be that Obama was simply wiser than all those other Americans who supported the invasion of Iraq. Maybe he is a man of greater moral character than those in the CIA and Justice Department who determined that enhanced interrogations were justified to prevent another attack.

Obama said it best: "There are no neat or easy answers here."

But it is also true that seven years ago, the burden of protecting the nation from another attack did not fall on Obama's shoulders. Since taking office, he has discovered the weight of that burden and tweaked his promises and policies accordingly.

Transparency isn't always in the national interest, he said Thursday. Obama sounded like George W. Bush or Cheney when he reversed himself on releasing photos of detainee abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying that their release would inflame anti-American sentiment and further endanger American troops.

Likewise, Obama has reserved the right to order enhanced interrogation techniques should circumstances warrant. What would those be, one wonders? Perhaps a massive terrorist attack on American soil? Bloody right.

Yet, as Cheney said, Obama's team speaks "as if they have resolved some great moral dilemma" in how to get terrorists to talk. In reality, they've postponed the decision "while assigning a presumption of moral superiority to any decision they might make in the future."

Nobody ever said Obama wasn't artful.

Whether Obama's worldview is the right one -- and Cheney's wrong -- may become clearer with time. We can all pray that Obama doesn't have to experience the revelations that occur in the White House bunker. But if he does, we might also pray that the man from Venus indulges his inner Martian just a little.

Kathleen - Just go away. Go join the rest of the adoring media who helped you elect our Obamanation of a president.

Moonbeam
Moonbeams in his eyes- not "true" light, but a reflection of what has been generated by another. Like real moonlight that does not disinfect, promote real growth, or provide adequate illumination to get the work done, the president's speech was one of platitudes, idealistic phrases, and of course, it's not my fault, this mess was created by another. His statements about Gitmo being created in a time of fear without adequate foresight sounded more like a description of his stimulus package. Cheney sound more presidential as more of a leader than anything i have heard in years (sorry W)

WOW
Perfect article for Kathleen. Prooves what everyone here at TH has been saying. Notice that if she uses her old brain, Cheney seems correct, but when she uses her "feelings", the messiah seem correct.

Don't "pray" to Obama, demand action.
"...we might also pray that the man from Venus indulges his inner Martian just a little."

In the same sense, I have 'prayed' that you'd depart TH and all other Conservative venues.

Hasn't worked though.

Not likely to influence Comrade Obama, either.

Getting rid of both of you will take action, not prayer.

How can K. Parker or anyone else for

that matter trust obama, the fraud and imposter, when he is unwilling to even reveal his past.

We have a man spending millions of dollars to keep his past secret telling us to trust him.

Am I the only person who finds that hypocrisy both ludicrous and disconcerting?

The man is not even an American citizen and his minions and some of you call him their/your POTUS.

That pretty clearly reveals the knowledge or intelligence of his minions and the other lightweights who are following him as their leader.

He cannot be POTUS because he is not a citizen of the U.S.A.

Actually...
While it is nice and "human" to try to see both sides of an issue, there is a moral absolute here. Earning the respect of an enemy who televises the slow beheading of their captives with dull knives will not come through restraint. The last time we faced an enemy with anything close to this mindset we had to nuke two of their cities. You must give them what they want and at least they give us a choice...their death or ours. That should be an easy choice.

Obama was only 5 or 6 years old
when the 9/11 attack occurred, so that isn't his fault... (or was that something else?)

Yes, Obama reads off the teleprompter with the best. But his actions don't usually match the words, so which Obama is the real Obama?

The chickens will come home to roost, soon enough.

I don't read Kathleen Parker
see above

Obama - 'The Artful Dodger"
"Nobody ever said Obama wasn't artful."

May I introduce Obama - 'The Artful Dodger'

Artful Dodger, in the novel Oliver Twist,is a pickpocket (community organizer), so-called for his skill and cunning, the leader of the gang of child criminals (ACORN), trained by the elderly Fagin (Salinsky).

Dickens describes him thus:

"He was a snub-nosed, flat-browed, common-faced boy enough; and as dirty a juvenile as one would wish to see; but he had about him all the airs and manners of a man. ..with rather bow-legs, and little, sharp, ugly eyes."

Ultimately the Dodger is caught with a stolen silver snuff box (phony birth certificate) on his person, convicted (impeached) as a "lifer", and is sent (removed from office) to a penal colony in Australia (Chicago). The Dodger fails to handle his adversity well, roaring in the courtroom (Senate hearing) "I am an Englishman (minority), where are my rights?" or similar terms where he considers himself a "victim of society". ... the jury (Senate) does not take long to convict him of the theft (phony birth certificate).

The nickname "Artful Dodger" is still commonly used to refer to someone who is good at avoiding responsibility or the consequences of his or her actions.

Bravo once again for an excellent column.

Of course, you will be chastized vigorously for

"The nickname "Artful Dodger" is still commonly used to refer to someone who is good at avoiding responsibility or the consequences of his or her actions."

Perhaps you would like to share with us how
Obama is avoiding responsibility or the
consequences of his actions. Or do you think
it is his responsibility to stand on the edge
of the New York harbor with cowboy hat and
guns at the ready showing the world just how
tough we are.

Will they all call hell home?
Washington DC mess is out of control by two partical parties agreeing to defraud the United states Constitution. Alcoholics, adulters, adultress, fornicators, homosexuals, drug abusers, prescription drug abusers, and illegal aliens supporters joined forces to deceive the American public while increasing the size of government, impowering the civil servant unions, impowering the national association of human rights workers through the grants of Americorp. Preventing DNA testing of civil servants, their religious and business partners allowed criminals to never have to face a day in court. It also allowed African Americans that was deemed to have bad attitudes to serve multiple years for crimes they did not commit or be held for ransom by Americorp or other quasi-government entities while denial of rights to due process, justice and constitutional rights and provisions from the CRA 1964 and other acts of congress. I believe this prove when Clarence Thomas was EEOC director he was right, the hypocrites continual to practice the discrimination they by the same means they fight to put into law.

Obamanation chief reporter
Hell is your future home and everyone is fully aware you are lost in space.

Kathleen
You sound like a teenager in heat when you speak of Obama. Get a grip, woman, and act your age, for chrissake.

To assume that both men were being 100% earnest reveals you as a dingbat. Cheney is a responsible adult who has kept our country safe. He's done so while bending over backward to stay well within the rule of law, while following some commonsense practices to extract information from some murderous humanoids.

Obama is nothing but a self-aggrandizind political animal, bereft of ideas but loaded with ideology. An incompetent sophomoric dreamer for whom an attack on America would be collateral damage at best and another "opportunity" at worst. I loathe him, as should any right-thinking person.

Obama will NEVER do what's best for America--only what's best for himself (viz. covering his @ss by not wanting the abuse photos released, although mark my words someone will anyway with his behind-doors blessing), or to further the juvenile Marxist utopia he's infected with.

Venus and Mars my rear end, Kathleen. The only Venus here is your wet infatuation with this idiot we reluctantly call our president, and the only Mars is the growing determination with which readers of good sense here at TH vote your "columns" 1 star for lack of anything less.

Tammy
I'll tell you how Obama doesn't have a whit of sense of responsibility:

1 - Running up a 10 TRILLION dollar debt in 3 months, after braying like a jackass about Bush's spending for the entirety of his campaign

2 - Vowing to close Guantanamo throughout his campaign, although not having the slightest idea of what to do with the dangerous elements housed there. Hence his flip-flopping on the issue.

3 - Releasing memos about enhanced interrogation techniques, but only about the methods, while keeping the results hidden. In other words: Hey, Al Qaeda, here's an appendix to your training manual, but God forbid Americans should find out what the detested "Cowboy" that preceded me has averted through these techniques.

4 - Flip-flopping about releasing "abuse" photos. Rolling over to the ACLU like a flatulent puppy, only to then come to his senses at the 11th hour after some adults around him thankfully made him sober up from his own gasses.

5 - Stuffing his cabinet full of tax-cheats, Marxists, thick-thighed wives of philandering ex-presidents, corrupt governors, community agitators, America-hating racists with a chip on their shoulders and Tim Geithner.

Let me be clear: after the last 3 months, for any successful terrorist attack on the USA the blood will be on HIS HANDS, as well as on the unspeakable lily-livered morons who elected him and tow his line.

Pray that this idiot keeps us safe--in his case, given his actions, through blind luck--or what this country will turn into is something neither you nor I will like.

Venus vs. Mars--Rookie vs. the Pro;
If I was a professor grading this column I would give it a "D." Ms. Parker is one of those columnists who writes "On the one hand and on the other hand..."

Come right out and admit it: you'd like to cuddle Barack Obama and consign that old pol Cheney to some place where he'd never be heard again.

For all his faults, Cheney is a real trouper. He's been through the fires for eight years and survived and helped us to survive. I'd welcome his sage advice in a foxhole but Barack Obama would be useless sans his teleprompter and straw man arguments.

The best way to view Obama is to think of ambulance chasers and crass lawyers who sue the medical profession. Obama would seek the advice of Army lawyers before shooting an advancing Islamic fanatic with a machine gun.

The difference
The difference between the two men is that Cheney spoke from his heart and soul while Obama spoke to his liberal base. So Kathleen that begs the question, why can't you tell the difference? Never mind the fact that Cheney was Secretary of Defence in Gulf War 1 and does have experience in these matters unlike Obama whose claim to fame is Acorn.

Let's follow Obama's / Parker's logic:
If we're going to win "by being good people", and having some among our ranks cause mild discomfort to terrorists means we are not "good people"...

Then we really need to quit killing anybody, whether they need killin' or not. Time to lay off the armed forces.

Why oh why do I read this womans
dopey columns?

I dunno, the comments are pretty good.

I saw an ADULT (Cheney) giving a snot nosed boy his comeuppance. Rather a Dickensian word isn't it? Goes good with Skulptyr's Artful Dodger comparison.

Parker
In the not too distant past, I read most of your articles and tyhose I disagreed with were just mildly disagreeable and I respected your opinion.Since the onset of Obamania, you have turned into aa rasping harridan. I blog on a site which is mostly conservative but, for years, has had a number of liberal regulars. While there was disagreement, there was courtesy, (save for a few, there's always a few).One of them was an extremely courteous person--UNTIL-- Obama won. He is a very poor winner. He has gone from a respected minority on that site to someone who is challeneged daily and Occasionally insulted.
So too, goes the Parker story.

In the above you say;
"Obama said it best: "There are no neat or easy answers here.""

What an absolutely cowardly copout for your demi-god. He cannot ever be wrong no matter how wrong he may be with people like you around. Your opinion and your piece illustrate the collision course of Mars and Venus more than either of the two players discussed.

And, oh, you lef out the other big copout---"it's a very complex issue". In Venus speak that means --I don't know how to defend my inane, insane position.

I seen
Cheney was here in this world and the obama was out in space.

I seen a real world view from Cheney v. a space cadet view from the obama

I see Parker

But haven't you noticed, that is Obama's favorite trope? He sues it constantly to appear "balanced". He gives both sides, pretends to give both a eharing, then paints the extremists on one side as "radical" and the extremists on his favorite side as "rational", thus pushing the debate in his favor while looking like he is not taking sides.

It is a clever debating trick, but a very dishonest way to argue. Which is the whole of Obama. He is a good speaker (or good at selecting speech writers), but dishonest and frightened to reveal his true beliefs.

(He also is intolerant of any opposition, but that flaw is not relevant for this column.)

So, of course Ms. Parker likes him, just like her, he is afraid to commit to any clear position but wants to appear to be "fair" to "all sides", while quietly smuggling in his foregone conclusion.

Says who
"It may be that Obama was simply wiser than all those other Americans who supported the invasion of Iraq."

Based on what, his life experience? Ivy league education? Tutelage from radicals and hatemongers?

And just what has he done since being elected that would support such a claim? Cripe, he can't even staff his administration!

" Reiterating his case for closing Guantanamo, voted down by the Senate a day earlier, he also said there's no guarantee that terrorists won't attack again or that Americans won't die as a result. But, we'll win anyway. How? "

~~~
" Reiterating " this poor tired misused word...
" re-repeating "
Yes, it is often re-repeated, but it seems the author knows not the true meaning of words. To 'iterate' means to spell out, usually in serial fashion, what happened.
To 'reiterate', at least to me, seems to be someone who nags.
Aha! We have the nature of k parker, the RINO 'clumnist'
Thin Veneer
Really, it's about time someone stated what is so apparent to any objective viewer, or evaluator of Obama and his positions. He's just not that intelligent. He exhibits virtually no comprehension of economic policy. He's been notoriously dismissive of any idea/thought which isn't aligned with his notions or agenda. His ability to speak extemporaniously (teleprompter malfunction anyone?) belies any keen intellect or command of the subject upon which he would be waxing loquacious. In essence he's at best a puppet. At worst, the true Manchurian candidate.
Kathleen - that was just awful.
Your celebration of indecisiveness and revelry in equivalence is enough to cause a little throw-up to rise in the back of the throat.
One star, because "zero" stars is not an available choice.
Just terrible, townhall.
Awful.
It's very sad and annoying...
that I bother reading this crapola put forth by this clown. Obammy is a good reader, he says whatever his teleprompter tells him to say. His blame Bush dung is really getting old. He says he doesn't want to dwell on the past, then spends the rest of his read blaming Bush. Cheney's speach was scheduled weeks ago but Obammy's read was put up on the screen for him in an effort to slander Cheney. Cheney cleaned his clock...however Kathleen Parker is just way to simple minded to see it, and much to dumb to see Obammy for what he is... a good reader.
Can I get a refund?
I just wasted 3 1/2 minutes of my life reading this column. I realize I was reading this very late at night, but I didn't see the point of this column. Did I miss it? Anyone??
Parker: Painful to Read
I cannot read her columns anymore. The titles and first four lines are all I can bear.
Jerseyvet, you have a much apter comparison. Let's add, "flash-in-the-pan" to "rookie" and "proven, seasoned" to "veteran."
Remember Our Fallen Soldiers
History will record that the American Soldier and those American Soldiers who have fallen, rank in the greatest humans who have ever lived on this planet.
The American Soldier have freed millions in bondage and defended the freedom of America with willingness of the ultimate sacrifice.
The Fallen American Soldier is someone who walked the hero's path. Someone who walked into the heart of darkness for Duty, Honor and Country.
The American Soldier waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, their families and America, its citizens and freedom.
The American soldier is the fiercest Warrior ever in history, because their mission is the defense of family, neighbors, America and freedom.
The families of the American Soldier, while their faces beamed with pride, their hearts were filled with anxiety and tears as they watched their American Soldier leave to defend them and this Great Country.
Families and neighbors look with horror as the military vehicle stops in front of the home of the American Soldier, to inform them of the ultimate sacrifice of their hero.
No honor can be too great; every tribute is too small for the Fallen American Soldier and their families.
God Bless the American Soldier and their families!
Weak Analysis
This is the first time I've read Ms. Parker. Weak and sentimental. Another case (like Obama) of someone who has never had responsbility for protecting or providing for others. Cheney was spot on.
Parker and centrism
Parker is a "centrist" in the worst sense of the word. She'd argue ax-murdering is fine if restricted to odd-numbered days of the month.
I've no doubt the overwhelming majority of Jews slaughtered by the Nazis were "good people," but that didn't enable them to survive. Brutal threats require forceful counter-measures, sometimes brutally forceful, e.g., Hiroshima.
Do we shoot mad dogs, or try to befriend them so they'll like and understand us? Do we fight cancer with radiation and strong poison, or with cough drops and chicken soup?
Compassion for murderers is treason to the victims. No American value requires us to refrain from waterboarding mass murderers in order to save innocent life - quite the opposite, in fact. Our "better nature" does not include shrinking from protecting the innocent in order to bask in the moral applause of fools.
MEMOGATE
What is Barack Obama hiding?
What is he afraid of?
Why won't he release the unpublished Torture Memos and prove Dick Cheney wrong about the life saving intell gathered from torturing three Al Qaida thugs?
What is in them that he wants kept secret, that he doesn't want us to know?
Is this what he calls transparency and integrity, an ethical administration second to none in morality?
No!
This is a scandal!
This is a shame!
This is MEMOGATE!
Come clean Mr. President!
We want full disclosure!
Release all the memos!
We deserve to know!
Style vs. substance
Emotion vs. reason; "cool young guy with awesome pecs" vs. "square old guy with heart trouble"....Obama's supporters are taken in by his performance, not his accomplishments. I'll take Cheney any day. And Liz Cheney is one of the most intelligent, articulate debaters I've ever seen. I would love for her to become more active in the Republican party!
Cheney is a Sore Loser
What history is revealing is that The "enhanced interogations" took place primarily during 2002 - 2003. Many in the CIA, Justice department and FBI did not agree with these techniques. The FBI started a war crimes file. There was disagreement from the begining.
Slowy over time, especially in Bush's second term, Bush started moderating his policies. He consider negotiations with Iran and N. Korea for example. By this time, enhanced interrogations ended.
As hard-right Bush migrates to moderate-right Bush. Cheney becomes margianlized. His influence wanes in the Bush White House.
The end of "enhanced interogations" happened in the Bush administration, not in the Obama administration. This is important to remember.
Cheney is still fighting against the moderates in the second term of the Bush administration. Rice, Hadley and Gates, who successfully marginalized Cheney and forced a more pragmatic foreign policy. As a result, you saw a moderation of Bush policies in his second term. Obama is just continuing were Bush left off.
Cheney lost and he is a sore loser. He is still trying to win the argument and save his legacy.
Voltaire and Tacitus X
Well said both of you!
Wrong Planets
Cheney is definitely from Mars but Obama is from Uranus
Obama won't experience the next attack the American people will. His first reaction will be to figure out how to blame someone else.
Bush and Cheney were the last grownups in office
You cannot have it both ways
Either Cheney is right or Obama. Your proposal that we wait and see if Obama is right will cost American lives. What if we have another 911? If we do I will hold you accountable along with the one.
Safety
It boils down to this-who would you rather have next to you in a foxhole?
I agree
Obama comes from a different planet in an alternate universe.
A fair exposition of both sides
If only Kathleen had been as fair and even handed with her treatment of Sarah Palin.
Town Hall Ratings Chart
TH - if you insist on allowing Parker to post her mindless drivel here please modify the ratings chart. The worst I can give her today is a 1, however, something in the minus range would certainly be more appropriate and would more accurately reflect the assessments of your readers.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, Parker produces tripe which should be ignored. She obviously doesn't have any grasp of moral certitudes and confuses "warm cuddlies" with values. We get enough of that from the dyed-in-the-wool empty-headed socialists, we don't need any more of it from CINO/RINO's.
No guesswork needed.
Obama had his first test. Four teenage, Somali pirates held the US Navy at bay for 36 hrs. The lone hostage escaped his captors and with the Navy watching was recaptured. The hostage was eventually rescued but, other than the crack shooting of the Seals, the episode was troubling. Obama spends more time thinking about how his decisions will reflect on himself to ever be an effective leader.
Venus Obama
didn't change positions on various issues because he's so kind. It's because he's feeling the heat from every level of government. When he has to make tough decisions he vacillates until pushed. It took days for him to decide to be a Martian and rescue the Captain and his crew from the pirates.God forbid a bunker situation arises.
Sore Loser vs, Weak Leader?
Stedes, let's assume you are right and Obama is just continuing Bush policies that were moderated in the second half of the Bush administration. What does it say about the character of Obama, the arrogant man-child, that he continues to whine about the early Bush policies like he is still a "candidate for president" rather than president of all the people of this country? The Left is always quick to point out the problems with “Bush Doctrines” but conveniently forgets to mention that according to Obama, his VP, his Secretary of State and the current Democrat Leaders in Congress, the war in Iraq was a lost cause and we should have withdrawn rather than support the Surge. Imagine the “mess” for Obama if Bush had heeded the counsels of messiah-Obama and the Left?
All presidents inherit “messes” from the previous administrations; it is the nature of the job. An adult responds by stepping up to a leadership role and works within the context of the circumstances; a child blames others. Cheney’s perspective is that enhanced interrogation was successful at stopping additional Americans from being killed. Reputable sources and apparent unreleased memos confirm Cheney’s assertions. Obama’s statements that alternatives were available which would have worked as effectively at revealing the plans of terrorists are mere conjecture. The proof of Obama’s hypocrisy; even as he has denounces the Bush tools and methods for combating terrorism, he continues to utilize them. He has even reserved the option of enhanced interrogation that he publicly decries.
Two different psyches
One, an adult with a lifetime of experience.
The other: a wet-behind-the-ears novice with little or no experience pretending to have some.
Who's Right? Cheney
Not bad Cupcake. I guess in all Obama's soaring rhetoric, you missed the part where he did his usual blame Bush routine and failed to deliver on his promise of a plan to close Gitmo.
As for who's right, since Obama seems to have duplicated the Bush policies almost verbatim, I'd say Bush and Cheney were probably closer to the mark.
House rejects probe into Pelosi CIA claims
Thursday, May 21, 2009
"House Democrats on Thursday defeated a Republican push to investigate House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's assertion that the CIA misled her in 2002 about whether waterboarding had been used against terrorism suspects.
"'This is partisan politics and an attempt by the Republicans to distract from the real issue of creating jobs and making progress on health care, energy and education,' said Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami."
Poor wimpy-limpy-shorty the Marxist is
so simple all he's capable of is blindly following Alinsky's Rules for Radicals... especially ...
RULE 5: "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon." There is no defense. It's irrational. It's infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions.
UNFORTUNATELY for these brain dead Alinskyites, it's not working...
In defense of KP
I think that too many are reading this article through the prism of KP's many other articles where she has mooned over Obama. This article isn't fawning or mooning, it is well written and presented.
KP actually takes Obama's argument apart and comes down in the side of Cheney, especially in the view that while Obama is always attacking the security policies of the Bush administration, he is in fact embracing them and continuing their usage. Her point is that Obama is an artful speaker and capable of great eloquence (her opinion, not mine) but when reality hits him in the face he embraces the very policies he claims were so detrimental to the American image. For example KP writes,"Since taking office, he has discovered the weight of that burden and tweaked his promises and policies accordingly." And this, " Obama sounded like George W. Bush or Cheney when he reversed himself on releasing photos of detainee abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan...", and finally this, "We can all pray that Obama doesn't have to experience the revelations that occur in the White House bunker. But if he does, we might also pray that the man from Venus indulges his inner Martian just a little."
She is not defending or boosting Obama here, but is in fact agreeing with the Mr. Cheney and his assessment of the security situation. If you want to slam KP just wait a few days and she'll probably give you a reason...but this one isn't worthy of the attacks she's getting.
Actually, skip the Alinskyites, whoever they
The reason is that first a person has to care
what you think before ridicule is effective.
We don't care. We first require some signs
Second, I find that a society that can do anything it darn well pleases is far more
civil revolution which means seeing that everyone has the most basic of things in our
WASHINGTON — With his sustained blitz of television appearances and speeches, former Vice President Dick Cheney has established himself as perhaps the leading Republican voice against President Obama.
Not a bad time, then, to be in the market for a multimillion-dollar book contract.
Mr. Cheney is actively shopping a memoir about his life in politics and service in four presidential administrations, a work that would add to what is already an unusually dense collection of post-Bush-presidency memoirs that will offer a collective rebuttal to the many harshly critical works released while the writers were in office and beyond.
Cheney vs Obama / Man vs Boy
Such different speeches. Such different voices. One a man....the other a boy.
One by one, the boy has learned that what he loftily proclaimed on the campaign trail looks different when faced with the actual job of doing what he promised he would do to get elected.
The man justifiably ridiculed the boy for his foolishness. He knows what works,because he has seen it in operation. His aim was to keep America safe,unlike the boy who only wanted to get elected.
Obama isn't Venus. He is somewhere out of the galaxy.
Ms. Parker said: "(Cheney) pulled no punches in his criticism of the Obama administration's security policies or in defending the Bush administration's". not a word about how President Gas Bag Obama said he was not going to look back, but nevertheless, his teleprompter spent a huge portion of his speech trashing Bush & Company.
Years ago I had to find a good oncologist. It was between a clownschool graduate like Biden, with all kinds of schmoozy bedside manner & a Cheney type, who was all business & knew his business & covered all bases, type. The fact I am still here to tell the tale gives you a hint of whom chose.
Mars and Venus
Are you implying that Obama is more woman like?
I find many flaws in him, but I have not thought that he was feminine. But then Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi and Golda Meier were surely strong individuals-tougher and stronger than many men. I do not find Obama to be in their category, however.
Donald W. Bales
The "Gift of gab."
Obama has what my dear old departed mother would call the "gift of gab." His ability to remain coherent without a teleprompter has been questioned and lampooned, perhaps with good reason, perhaps not but, certainly, with a teleprompter, his words and his delivery of those words are exemplary.
This skill coupled with his youth and good looks make him a commanding figure. There's only one problem and I will no doubt be excoriated for saying this; on the basis of experience he stands deep in Dick Cheney's shadow.
The Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the United States. It is the foundation and source of the legal authority underlying the existence of the United States of America and the Federal Government of the United States. It provides the framework for the organization of the United States Government. The document defines the three main branches of the government: The legislative branch with a bicameral Congress, an executive branch led by the President, and a judicial branch headed by the Supreme Court. Besides providing for the organization of these branches, the Constitution carefully outlines which powers each branch may exercise. It also reserves numerous rights for the individual states, thereby establishing the United States' federal system of government. It is the shortest and oldest written constitution of any major sovereign state. Further, it begins with "We The People" Not with "We The People Pay For Obamaism".
Where did you get that idea? Our Constitution gives Congress the right to levy taxes on the people and to allocate that tax money as it sees fit. Every civilized society uses taxation to pay the common expenses of that society.
Perhaps we differ in our definition of "charity"...Someone posted on townhall last week that medical care should be a luxury.
To The Atlmac and Arsofga
The Atlmac: You raise an interesting point that I heard somebody refer to on TV---that Cheney is not just attacking Obama now, he is attacking Bush also. Cheney got his way with Bush (kill 'em all, torture, start wars, keep secret prisons, no habeas corpus, send them to evil countries---the whole Cheney Nine Yards) more in Bush II Term I than in Bush II Term II, when Bush appears to have become less compliant with Cheney. There was a lot of publicity about how angry Cheney was when he couldn't get Bush to pardon Scooter Libby at the end of the term. It may be that Bush was getting nervous that he would be known to history as an evil man. Cheney, on the other hand, doesn't care. So there was growing difference between them, and Cheney now needs to justify his vile reputation.
To Arsofga: Where is the word "presidential" defined as "ignoring the law, placing a nation's leader above the Constitution, using personal contacts to force no-bid and very remunerative contracts upon the government, having no sense of ethics, being a bully, and having a deep and abiding love of sadism"?
The Constitution For Dummies 1
The Preamble of the United States Constitution begins with:
"We the people...."
Article I discusses The Legislative Branch.
Article II defines The Presidency.
Article III creates The Judiciary
Article IV establishes The States
Article V allows for The Amendment Process
Article VI concerns the Legal Status of the Constitution
Article VII defines Ratification.
The 1st, 2nd, 5th, 10th, 16th and 22nd Amendments still exist.
cont.
The Constitution For Dummies 2
Tariffs were the largest source of federal revenue from the 1790s to the eve of World War I, until it was surpassed by income taxes.
The first federal statutes imposing the legal obligation to pay a federal income tax were adopted by Congress in 1861 and 1862 to pay for the Civil War. The 1862 law levied a 3% tax on incomes above $800, rising to 5% for incomes above $10,000. Rates were raised in 1864. This income tax was repealed in 1872, but a new income tax statute was enacted as part of the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act in 1894.[4]
The United States Constitution specified Congress could impose a direct tax only if it was apportioned among the states according to each state's census population. In its 1895 decision the Supreme Court held in the case of Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Co. that a tax on income from property (a tax on interest, dividends or rent) was a direct tax under the Constitution, and so had to be apportioned.
The apportionment requirement made income taxes on property practically impossible, and Congress did not want to limit the income tax solely to a tax on wages. Therefore, in 1909 Congress proposed the Sixteenth Amendment, which became part of the Constitution in 1913 when it was ratified by the required number of states. The Amendment modified the requirement for apportionment of direct taxes by exempting all income taxes—whether considered direct or indirect—from the apportionment requirement. Congress re-adopted the income tax that same year, levying a 1% tax on net personal incomes above $3,000, with a 6% surtax on incomes above $500,000.
The Constitution For Dummies 3
By 1918, the top rate of the income tax was increased to 77% (on income over $1,000,000) to finance World War I. The top marginal tax rate was reduced to 58% in 1922, to 25% in 1925, and finally to 24% in 1929. In 1932 the top marginal tax rate was increased to 63% during the Great Depression and steadily increased, reaching 94% (on all income over $200,000) in 1945. During World War II Congress introduced payroll withholding and quarterly tax payments.
Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to impose a 100% tax on all incomes over $25,000 to help with the war effort. Top marginal tax rates stayed near or above 90% until 1964 when the top marginal tax rate was lowered to 70%. The top marginal tax rate was lowered to 50% in 1982 and eventually to 28% in 1988. However, in the intervening years Congress subsequently increased the top marginal tax rate to 35% which is the tax rate currently in 2008. President Barack Obama's budget consist of raising the top marginal tax rate to 39.6% in fiscal year 2010, at least.
You posted a tribute to your fallen comrades, on this occasion of Memorial Day. Please let me add a bit of poetry on this same subject. I wish it were better-known. This is AE Housman, an epitaph for military graves:
"Here, dead, we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is: and we were young."
On Memorial Day we remember those who died all the way; I hope we don't forget those who died only part-way because they also gave their lives. I have posted before about my uncle who served in World War II. In the South Pacific he held a jungle station for some incredible period of time after all his comrades were dead, before help came. After that experience he lost his mind. He lived another 25 years but spent them on the locked ward of a VA hospital because he was not safe to be let out. His life was as finished as if he had been fatally shot. His wife's life was very altered, and the children they never had missed out entirely on life. I hope on Memorial Day we will have a thought for those ruined soldiers as well as those who were killed.
Parker was right in noting the
differences in the way each party thinks. Democrats are the party of Venus, governing in an emotional, feelings-based way. Republicans are Martians, more thoughtful and practical and willing to do what is necessary, including fighting, to protect our way of life. Another way to say it is Republicans are like fathers, who want their children to grow into responsible and self-reliant adults able to survive in a difficult world. Democrats are the universal mother, who flinches every time her child gets a bump, and whose life is consumed with giving them self-esteem and "making it better". Fathers know they've succeeded when the grown-up child no longer needs them. Mothers want the child to need them always so they become super-enablers.
The Parker Problem
"Which one is right? Is the answer only a matter of ideology or is there some larger truth therein"?
Cheney is right and Obama is WRONG. Its just not uncomplicated Parker
correction...
Rather I meant to say Cheney is right and Obama is WRONG. Its just not that uncomplicated Parker
still ain't right....
And its not even the cocktail hour yet here.
Cheney is right and Obama is WRONG.
Its just not very complicated Parker.
There. I think I got it.
