Time to Retire the Hakapik

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- It isn't every day that one's very own hakapik arrives in the mail.

It is probably reasonable to assume that I'm the only person on my block to be the un-proud possessor of the aptly named bludgeoning and hacking instrument used to slaughter baby seals. 'Tis the season.

April 15 may be tax and tea-party day in the U.S., but it's baby-seal death day in Canada. Although the season began March 23 (19,411 down), the largest phase was to begin Wednesday, during which sealers will destroy and skin another couple hundred thousand seals, most between 25 days and three months old.

It's a living. I guess.

Like most, I've known about the baby seal hunts for decades and have averted my gaze. From my fetal curl, I've merely wished feverishly that someone would put a stop to it.

I might have managed another year without weighing in on the world's largest maritime massacre if not for my hakapik, delivered compliments of PETA. It arrived innocuously enough in a flat, 5-foot long package. Unsheathed, the hakapik is menacing -- like having a "Shining" Jack Nicholson crouched in the corner -- and seems more suitable to an exhibit of medieval torture instruments than to the office of someone who delivers to the outdoors (rather than squishes) visiting insects.

My hakapik -- a phrase I never expected to utter -- has a 42-inch long handle with a combo hammerhead/spike on the end. The hammer portion is used, theoretically, to crush the seal's skull, while the spike is used to haul the carcass away. (Older seals are usually shot with rifles.)

Those who favor hakapiks argue that they are efficient and humane. Efficient because they allow for a "clean kill," meaning the pelt isn't damaged. "Humane" because a properly delivered blow to the head causes instant, painless death.

Opponents of this gruesome drill claim it isn't possible to properly administer a blow to the head when one is standing on a slippery ice floe swinging a heavy club at a small moving animal. Consequently, at least some animals are not killed humanely -- or even killed at all before being skinned and gutted.

A 2007 European Food Safety Authority report concluded that effective killing doesn't always occur, causing animals pain and distress. Another 2007 report by scientists at the University of Bristol found "widespread disregard for the Marine Mammal Regulations" during seal hunts (though bashing the head of a defenseless baby hardly qualifies as "hunting").

The researchers said that a maximum of 15 percent of seals observed on videos were killed in a manner that conformed to the regulations and that violations were probably worse because they didn't have access to continuous sequences for all seals.

Andy Butterworth, senior research fellow, wrote that "although many of the seals observed were clearly wounded by the clubbing and shooting, sealers did not routinely monitor for unconsciousness (as required) before skinning them."

Too gruesome to consider, but then, hunters argue, so are slaughterhouses. The baby seal "harvest" is simply more visible than, say, the factories where baby calves and lambs are destroyed for scaloppini and party chops. But does one cruelty justify another?

Increasingly, the answer is "no," as other countries follow the lead of Americans, who banned seal products in 1972.

As of March 18, Russia has banned its own seal hunt after the bear-hunting Vladimir Putin called sealing a "bloody industry." And, the European Parliament has adopted a declaration banning commercial seal products (but still allows for traditional hunting, e.g. Inuit). The Parliament plans to vote on a complete ban later this month, which could further emasculate the seal market.

In the meantime, market and other forces seem to be tilting favorably toward the baby seals. Pelt prices are down from $100 per animal in 2006 to just $15 this year, thus undermining government claims of the seals' economic importance.

In other news, which one may interpret as one wishes, the weather is making life difficult for sealers. Strong winds and freezing rain have been slowing them down. The pelts they seek so that human bipeds can be fashionably warm are secure for the time being on the animals who need them most.

Pressures, meanwhile, are mounting across the border where U.S. Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, recently introduced a resolution urging the Canadian government to end the commercial seal hunt.

Come on, Canada. See things Putin's way and I'll donate my hakapik to the museum of your choice.

Hackapik
I can see only one good use for the "Hackapik" and that would be to use it on Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank and all their friends.

You either value life or you don't!!!!!

Ouck Fbama

Wish she
Wish Kathleen would retire the pen and make the environment here more hospitable.

Killing of baby seals
Killing these baby seals for the purpose that they are killed for is what is so wrong with it. Not only is it inhumane but the use of their skins is sickening! I support many organizations who are boycotting Canadian seafood products until they stop this horrible practice!

This is so stupid
"A 2007 European Food Safety Authority report concluded that effective killing doesn't always occur, causing animals pain and distress."

SO??? It might take them longer to die, but if the point is to kill them, then what's the difference? They're freakin' ANIMALS! (And I do believe in evolution, thanks.)

What's next? Lethal injection? Oh, wait, we can't even do THAT right.

Tea Party
San Diego had a really great Tea Party last night, and I was proud to be a part of it. There were also people at many of the post offices to talk to taxpayers on this darkest of days in this country.

And the winner for
The absolute most useless drivel written on a political website ever goes to KP again. What the F does this have to do with ANYTHING going on in the US TODAY!!!!!!!!!!! KP, why don't you go back to spreading your chicken legs to that communist dictator man child POS POTUS. And update that ancient photograph. Everyone knows what you look like NOW.

Leave it to Parker!
The tea parties were an aside in this article! When speaking about the slaughter of a species Parker didn't consider the slow torture and death of the American citizens who toil away day after day just to keep a roof over their heads. Their reward after such heroic efforts? Death.

KP, why don't you crawl back under whatever rock you came out from under or, go play footsies with BO and the new pooch?

Parker's priorities are upside down
Kathleen:

How sad that you are more concerned over baby seals than baby human beings. Additionally, the most important story on this day was the peaceful demonstrations against big government and oppressive debt taking place all over this country. And all you can think about is baby seals? If you are going to express moral outrage against the killing of animals the least you can do is to apply the same sense of outrage for the violent killing of babies euphemistically called partial birth abortions. Responsible journalism requires a modicum of common sense.

Darn stupid computer!
I punched the button for Townhall.com, and it took me to Huffingtonpost. I gotta get this thing fixed.

ban seal hunts
It' not often that I agree with PETA, but in this case, they are right. Killing babies of any species is a high sin.

Obama not meet Constitutional criteria
Obama does not meet the criteria to be President under the U.S. Constitution. Why doesn't Obama release his college applications or his passport records? Because they will show that he is an Indonesian citizen, as he never gave up his Indonesian citizenship when he returned to Hawaii from Indonesia at age 10. (Obama's mother remarried an Indonesian when Barack was five, and she and Barack moved to Indonesia, where both became Indonesian citizens). In 1981, Obama traveled to Indonesia to visit his mother, and stopped off on the return trip to visit Pakistan with school friends. He traveled there on his Indonesian passort. Why doesn't Obama release his original birth certificate? Because it will show that he was not born in Hawaii, rather he was born in Kenya (his father's native country).

Either way, because he is an Indonesian, or because he was born in Kenya, Obama is not qualified to be President. Obama and the leadership of the Democratic Party know this to be true, and he deceived the American people by keeping it a secret and refusing to release the records. Mutliple legal cases are challenging Obama's status to be President. Check out-- wnd.com or obamacrimes.us or defendourfreedoms.us and spread the word, as the media REFUSES to cover this issue! The truth about Obama will be revealed.

WOW, 25 comments
and counting, your "catching on" ain't cha' Kathy. Maybe it's time to move on, to moveon.org.

fetuses have no brain?
Wendy, I am going to hope you are throwing around a term you don't understand because "fetus" is any unborn child after about 8 weeks gestation. The lady in labor is carrying a "fetus". Otherwise, you are using "fetus" the way the Klan uses the N-word, as a slur, a way to "thing" a person.
On the subject of brains, brain waves are detectable at 7 weeks gestation. An unborn child has spontaneous movement around 6 weeks, can be taught at 8 weeks to distinguish one sound from another. REM or dream sleep has been recorded before 20 weeks. I saw raw video footage of an abortion done at 10 weeks. When they put the dilator in, the baby girl scrambled to the top of the womb in a frenzy of flailing arms and legs. The average pulse of a baby at that stage is roughly 120 beats per minute. They measured hers at 220 and she achieved 240 by the time they killed her. (This video was later edited into the movie THE SILENT SCREAM. I saw it in 1984 narrated personally by Dr. Bernard Nathanson.) I remember that feeling. That feeling is terror, and terror requires a mind.

KP goes humane looney!
Come on, KP. Everybody knows that conservatives don't (and shouldn't) have any problem with clubbing the baby seals. KP sounds like she's been drinking way too much leftwing environmental/humane kool aid. Conservatives know that God gave the earth and everything on it to man, to use as he chooses. KP's distance from conservatism gets bigger and bigger. What next?

Good For Kathleen Parker
I have learned to wade into townhall columns being very careful not to gag, but I am starting to like Kathleen Parker quite a lot. I admire her for having a mind and a heart where her Inner Conservative Robot is supposed to dwell, parroting GOP talking points. Townhallers like their writers to be vicious and mindless---and any call for blood is guaranteed to go over big. But Parker, who surely knows that, seems to be quoting Martin Luther: "Here I stand. God help me. I can do no other."

Parker
Why did you avert your gaze? You have clout. Why didn't you take a stand?

Do you EVER take a stand on anything?

Wendy-
"And stop your yapping about fetuses. Fetuses are not people. They do not possess consciousness or a functioning brain."

-----
That said, can I club you, and all the Obama voters for that matter, over the head given that you apparently do not possess a "functioning brain." Using your new paramaters for what defines life, I guess an infant or small child wouldn't meet your criteria. Does an infant know right from wrong, has a functioning brain, etc?

Now, I do completely agree with you on the absolute pussification of this country. I am sick and tired of these hypersensitive professional victims. I am tired, especially of the so-called men in this country, who have been so feminized and emasculated that they have become a pathetic joke.

If you think about it, so much of our policy, actions, and new laws are driven not by whether it will actually solve the problem, rather by whether it creates a good "appearance" and akes people "feel" like something is being done. The examples are endless: from making 90 yr old white grandmothers take their shoes off at the airport to morons turning their lights off for Earth Hour. Just about everything...

Whatever Kathleen is for...
I am for.

(Sorry, I couldn't read this one through.)

So...
What's your point, KP?

So is anyone
surprised that parker is a supporter of one of the biggest domestic terrorist groups operating inside the USA?

Not flying
Not flying with Katie Couric today Kathleen? I thought you would be accepting your share of the award for helping to bring down Sarah Palin. But, you only used a rhetorical club unlike the one used on the baby seals.

Leave the seals alone.
Use the hack-a-pick on pirates.

Save the Seals
I say "Save the Seals, Club a Liberal."

This lady is truly a piece of work. She absolutely detested Palin throughout the campaign, much of it coming from Palin's strong stance on abortion. Not once have I heard Parker discuss the atrocities condoned by her beloved President "Born Alive Act" OBozo. She is worried about the seals.

Year after year,,.
..it goes on, and yet year after year it continues, despite dire warnings of how the savagery of man is going to wipe out the seal population.
How is clubbing a seal any different than 1800s plains Indians running hundreds of buffalo over cliffs or Northwest tribes skeining for salmon, or spearing whales? Is it because baby seals are cute?

I wonder if Parker knows that when she orders her veal parmigiana, it is a baby cow, raised in a pen, whacked between the eyes with a mallet or shot in the head with an air bolt (like the one used in No Country For Old Men),skinned, and cut up into tender chops for her enjoyment? Or that her chicken salad is made of birds raised in cages, shot with hormones and butchered in an efficient production line? Why is one okay by her and the other not? Is it because baby seals are just so darn cute with those big sad eyes?

If I'm not mistaken, KP is pro choice, is she not? Abort the babies but save the seals!

Anyone want to bet that...
... if KP received the instruments used to perform partial-birth abortions in the mail, not only wouldn't she write a column on the topic, but she'd probably just call the cops?

Sorry Kitty, but you still won't be invited to the White House tea party.

Hack-a-Parker
Kathleen,
Maybe it's time to retire, before becoming an Obamamaniacal hack? (AKA "HackaParker")

not as evil as abortion, but....
Kevin-
That was very well stated.

It's sad that certain elements within the conservative ranks are so callously dismissive of animal cruelty. And no, bringing up the massive horror of abortion as a smoke screen does not excuse a person from ignoring (and in some pathetic cases, even justifying....) the lesser evil of animal cruelty. Evil is still evil, suffering is still suffering, and cruelty is still cruelty. We should at least have the intellectual and moral integrity to recognize it for what it is, and not mock KP for "weeping for seals".

Honestly, attitudes like that are pathetic and miss the point entirely. I would hope that we could at least realize that the wonton and gratuitous slaughter of defenseless creatures, while certainly not as evil as abortion, is still a sin and is still a betrayal of our charge to be good and JUST stewards of the animal kingdom. Or would you actually like to stand before God someday and try to explain to him the goodness and godliness of clubbing infant seals to death? You might not land in the same depths of hell as the local abortionist, but I doubt you'd get much sympathy either.

Or as "lemonfemale" stated above, we can do more than one thing. At least I hope that we can.

Used-ta-Be
Lemonfemale: Parker used-ta-be a conservative. She's never written about the messiah's abandonment of infants - except in oblique terms. There's apparently a great deal of cognitive dissonance going on in that blonde head of hair.

Meanwhile...perhaps some pro-lifer will send her the implements which abortionists utilize in their ghastly task, plus a how-to-do-it DVD demonstrating the gruesome murders of unborn babies, as well as clips of babies strangling on their own tears as they're left to die all alone.

Meanwhile...animal cruelty bothers me, too - and even Putin has sense enough to stop the seal slaughter. But I doubt Putin would stop the slaughter of infants. He's too KGB.

It's not an either/or for people of conscience:
cruelty is cruelty. And the cruel - both right and left - have shown that they don't care whether it's a seal they kill - or the unborn, or the mentally retarded, or the homosexual or the elderly. They're coming for you, one day, perhaps me, should we not live up to their vision of perfection. Such things are Nazis made of; such thing are from Chairman Mao.

Meanwhile, the Idiot in Chief doesn't know if a baby is yet human after it's been born.

If PETA was as concerned about the slaughter of innocent human beings as they are everything else, I might just join them. Anyway...

Perhaps we'll see Kathleen in a PETA protest ad? The mind recoils.

the fallacy of "meanwhile"
Assuming I'm correct about what was meant by saying "meanwhile Kathleen weeps for baby seals." Suppose Kathleen Parker was OK with current abortion law, which she is not. Last I heard, were Kathleen Parker writing the laws, she would eliminate 95% or more of abortions. Suppose she was OK with it and wrote this article on baby seals. It's still a good thing to be concerned about them. One out of two, as it were.
Besides which, she's writing one article on one thing. I used to get this all the time at our Right to Life booth. "Why aren't you concerned about (fill in the blank)?" And I would answer "I am. But right now I'm here doing this." We can do more than one thing.
I'm not Peter Singer, to equate a baby with a harp seal but I've no problem with this column.

Nope
Kathleen has no sense of timing and I'm sure she opposes the tea parties.

So what better way to divet attention from the historic tea parties happening today than to write some drivel about seals in Canada.

With the slaughter of human babies taking place around the world and in America, I can hardly provide myself the luxury or sensitivity of caring about baby seals.

Write about partial birth abortion
if you want some real horrors.

The seals are killed with compassion compared to the most innocent among us.

Go ahead, ask Planned Parenthood for the tools used to break open a skull and the vacuum used to suck out the babies brains.

And you want to talk about baby seals when far more human babies are destroyed every year than seals. Please.

Sorry, but I can hardly draw any sympathy for the seals when so much brutality continues for the most innocent among us. The silent scream of the unborn speaks far louder than any seal or any column you could possibly write.

Idiotic and diversionary article, but I've come to expect this from Kathleen and her skewed perspectives.

And a Bit About Horses too
Kathleen,

Nice essay. Opps, apparently you deserve 30 lashes for addressing a non-American issue.

Maybe the Canadians aren't so nice warm fuzzy folks we make them out to be. Thank God, we always need more countries to point fingers at.

Should you decide it's necessary to do penance for casting your eye too far north, you can write an essay on the nasty things Americans do to horses--wild and domesticated. Since we have a bizarre appetite for gruesome stories, this horse piece will bring a few folks back into the fold.

Knowing you will be deluged with scorn mail for caring about animals----let me put out an advance response:

I'm no tree hugger. I've no time for the animal activists who bomb building to save lab rats, etc. I eat meat but would feel better about it if I was doing the killing to keep me honest like the Indians.

Where did we get the idea we have a right to perpetuate the most unnecessary, bizarre, and vicious acts of violence on 4 legged creatures ?

J.D. Salinger nailed it in "Cather in the Rye": " I would rather have a horse. Give me a damn horse--after all horses are human for God's sake". Damn right.

So, an invitation to all those who bash Kathleen with babble for having a bit of compassion for seals: be in touch with me.

I'm happy to use that hakapic or better yet a shillelagh to bust the heads of any readers who want to get a sense of what it feels like to get one's skull bashed in. Last time I checked, animals feel pain. We ought be 'humane' when we're doing our killing. I realize it might seem a stretch since there are still plenty of people certain that babies don't feel pain. No anethesia or analgesia when we do circumcisions among other things we subject infants to.

God help us. Kathleen---bring it back over the border to horses. We've strict rules for what you can write about !

Meanwhile,
President Infanticide endorses the slaughter of babies, including babies that are just about to breath their first breath. Let's see, how is that done?

First, you plunge scissors into the foramen magnum. (That's where the ice-pick goes when pithing a frog, too) Then you open them up so that you can either pith the squirming infant - (the frog kicks, too) - and scramble the brains or suck them out. The baby, expecting nothing more than mommy's love, is abandoned and betrayed by the ultimate betrayal.

Or the baby is born alive in Christ Hospital in Chicago, squirming and kicking like babies do. But someone has decided that the baby is not allowed to live, so it's shifted to a room - (in some cases, a dirty, dark washroom) - to be left alone. It dies, cold and alone and in the dark. The baby is alone, crying in fear and pain until finally dying.

This is the "procedure" the President endorses, the one he voted "present" twice for, the procedure he voted for once, the procedure he defended on the Senate floor in Illinois.

From such things are tyrants made;
From graves of babies
From cradles, slain.
The Emperor has no heart.

The Murderer in Chief says, to paraphrase:

"Why should a second doctor have to be called in to save the life of the infant the first doctor was trying to kill?" Take your abandonment issues, Mr. President, and deal with them. Killing babies is not an answer normal people come up with.

Even Putin has more heart than this gutless fool, though Russia kills babies like they were dissidents. But that's what you'd expect from the Russians.

Meanwhile, Kathleen weeps for baby seals.

Didnt bother
I didnt even bother to read this piece because I'm sure its the same drivel you post every other time. How about you retire!

Why, KP?

One line about a national dialogue of importance in THIS country (the issues brought up by the teabaggers, i.e., taxes, bailouts, spendings, printing money, deficits, etc.) and a whole article about Canada position on baby seal killing.

Could this article not been written, say, on Friday?
