A Biblical Political Move

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Just as news breaks that political fundraising is down for both parties, Republicans have lost one of their more generous contributors.

In what one might call a biblical move, Christian philanthropist Howard Ahmanson -- one of three major funders of California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriages -- has abandoned the GOP for the Democratic Party.

No one ever said the multimillionaire isn't idiosyncratic.

In a rare interview Thursday, Ahmanson shared some of his thoughts about why he switched parties. In a word, taxes.

Specifically, he was offended by the California Republican Party's insistence during a recent state budget battle that there would be no tax increases for any reason, no matter what. "They're providing one issue and it's just a very silly issue," Ahmanson told me by telephone.

So, without fanfare, Ahmanson printed out an online form and mailed in his Democratic Party registration. Thus far, he's heard nothing back, but confesses to hoping he'll receive a little card or something.

Ahmanson, who was born to and inherited great wealth, has spent a lifetime trying to figure out what to do with his good fortune. It has been, at times, a burden of guilt, complicated by a lonely childhood. He also has Tourette's syndrome, which has contributed to his reclusiveness.

Now 58, Ahmanson is recognized as one of the nation's leading evangelical Christians and one of conservatism's most reliable supporters, though he is hardly a Republican talking-point man. He follows his own script and has parted company with social conservatives before. He thinks those who argue for school prayer, for instance, are confusing the moral with the religious. Morality is how we relate to one another, he says. Religion is how we relate to God "and it's not the government's business."

One can't mention Ahmanson without also discussing his association with Calvinist theologian R.J. Rushdoony, who believed in a literal application of biblical teachings and is credited with inspiring the Christian home-schooling movement.

Rushdoony's ideas captured Ahmanson's imagination in what the philanthropist now calls "my wild youth," but he has mellowed. Ahmanson certainly doesn't believe that homosexuals should be executed, as some of his critics have suggested, but he does believe that gays should "come to Christ and then recover."

He is also no longer the welfare abolitionist he used to be, "though I hate the attitude that welfare, once granted, is a moral entitlement that can never be reduced. And Social Security and Medicare are included in my definition of welfare."

Ahmanson's conversion to the Democratic Party, following decades of donating millions to conservative think tanks and causes, certainly qualifies as a "shocker" in political circles. "What!!!!!" has been the typical response as I've sought reactions.

A few Republicans have e-mailed Ahmanson, but he hasn't gotten around to responding yet. He figures most are curious to understand his thinking. Some also may worry whither goest those deep pockets, though Ahmanson's contributions to individual candidates are relatively modest. As one conservative philanthropist put it: "He's more issue-oriented than party-oriented."

Thus, it isn't possible to draw conclusions about the direction of the Republican Party based on Ahmanson's joining the "enemy camp." He did make some observations about the GOP, however, and sees the party's current problems as tension between "the upscales and the downscales" -- the upper middle classes and the lower middle classes.

"If I were in the GOP, I'd advocate the party should be downscaling." Heading, that is, toward a populist position.

Yes, he liked Sarah Palin all right, but he favors Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. "I'm now a blue dog Democrat for Bobby Jindal in 2012."

On Barack Obama, it's too early to tell, he says. "He may do well or he may not do well."

Ahmanson was disappointed, but not surprised, by Obama's overturning of Bush administration restrictions on abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

It is probably safe to say that when Democrats decided they needed to start talking more about faith and take God back from the GOP, they hadn't quite figured on landing Ahmanson. But Ahmanson is certain he'll find friends among Democrats who believe, as he does, that conservative ideas are not exclusively Republican.

On the other hand, he says that Democrats who have contacted him think he will be disappointed to find a lack of support for his views. Says Ahmanson: "We'll see how tolerant they really are."

Senility?
Hey Parker, I think you need to go see your doctor to examine if you have early onset Alzheimer's disease. How old are you anyways or more to the point how old is that picture?

PRESIDENT OBAMA
IN NO TIME AT ALL PRESIDENT OBAMA WILL SEND DEMOCRATS RUNNING FROM HIM. IT IS GOOD THAT CONSERVATIVES ARE JOINING THE DEMOCRAT PARTY TO RID THE COUNTRY OF LIBERALS FROM TWO FRONTS. IT IS EASILIER TO DEFEAT A LIBERAL IN A PRIMARY THEN IN THE GENERAL ELECTION IN LIBERAL DISTRICTS. CONSERVATIVE MONEY IN THE DEMOCRAT PARTY IS NOT A BAD THING FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY BESIDES OBAMA THINKS HE IS KING OF THE WORLD HE SOLD CHRYSTLER TO THE ITALIANS.

Really Lost?
No doubt Howard, you can find a friend in the Democratic party but when the platform is pro gay, pro abortion then where is your Christian foundation? I don't think its friends you're looking for. If you really believe in social respondsibility then reduce the size of government by cutting spending and not raising taxes. California's legislature has been Democratic for years and our lawmakers have this state to show for it. Has your thinking evolved to this over the years or is this April Fools?

and for those who claim
that not knowing the name Ahmanson, means it is insignificant, consider that...not everyone who does good, who is philanthropic, who has influence....flaps his mouth, stands in front of a camera, or pushes to get his face on the evening news. Some people do what they do quietly, behind the scenes. Many, many, many times, you don't even know their names.

Just because a person has not infilitrated your personal webspace, myspace, friendspace, or line of vision, is NO indication of their value, importance, or influence.

Some of the most influential people in history have lived and died, and you never knew their name. But that doesn't make their existence and their work any less valuable.
Get over yourselves.

Duh! Who cares?
Ahmanson probably has Altheimers. that is the only thing that would make sense.

Parker just really need to get her journalism on. This is so boring and unimportant. Really!

I think it makes the point that conservative, Social, and Christian ideals supercede party affiliation

ellen, you are wrong
You say that inner city schools are failing the children, then say it is the parents who are responsible. In the early part of the 20th century, immigrants poured into America from all over Europe, not speaking English, desperately poor, existing in hovels and ren-down tenement buildings, 14 to a room, and no indoor plumbing and no hot water. There was nowhere for children to go to escape the relentless screaming and fighting and the squalid conditions. Once those kids got to school, though, there was structure and order, a belief that all children could learn and a curriculum rich with American history and literature and all the basics, including English immersion.

With or without good parenting, kids can achieve in good schools. Public schools are a disaster and they are destroying the country. I am a former teacher, and I didn't ebroll my sons in public schools, and I advise others to find an alternative. Separation of school and state!!

Hal Donahue will burn in Hell
for all eternity. Hal the Militant Homosexual, caught with his pants down in the mens room. Abortion apologists will all burn in hell.

Back to HuffyPuffy no Fluffy Hal you ignorant butthole. Why don't you keep your ideas to yourself, instead of trying to infect the Republican way of life with your life draining libtard positions. Cheers

Why do I even read Parker's columns?
...because I'm a sucker for middle-aged blondes?...

Perhaps...

Sometimes I wonder about myself.

Sheesh.

Ahmanson states:
"There is not a single right-wing opinion I hold that some section of the Democratic Party doesn’t support it. Opposed to “marriage equality” and freewheeling abortion rights? A lot of Democrats of color will agree."

Guess what? Ahmanson will be rejected unless he becomes pro-abortion/pro-gay marriage.

The democrats will take his money as long as he doesn't try to change the Democrats hard line positions.

This may help the Repubs if Ahmanson's influence causes factions within the Dem. party to attack each other.

Maybe that's his ultimate goal.

mum's the word.

WHY I REGISTERED DEMOCRAT(cont.)
I describe myself as a “social conservative, an economic moderate,” and to a considerable extent a property libertarian. By “economic moderate” I mean that the philosophy of “starve the beast” has failed. The beast will feed welfare and pork and starve infrastructure. If we want to confront irresponsible spending, we have to confront it directly. We have to confront directly the issue of the role of government and what we want it to do and not do. And when we do want government to do something, we want it to have enough money to be able to do what it does pretty well (at least considering it’s a government), but we have to fight the mentality of entitlement. The whole mentality entitlement is dangerous. The nearest thing we have to entitlements are property rights, and they are to defined things that actually exist. And all other rights, in the end, depend on property rights; freedom of speech, religion, and press is freedom in a place, or it is nothing. I am not one to radically abolish all welfare programs, as I was in my wild youth – and Social Security and Medicare are welfare, whether you like it or not – but the attitude of entitlement, especially to resources that may not even clearly exist, makes it impossible to pursue any kind of a rational fiscal policy.

I may have made a rash move, in that it will be hard for me to find Democrats that I can actually support – there probably are some, though; social conservatives in the inner city, Democrats with an open mind to vouchers and tax credits and in other ways willing to confront the public sector union beast (I don’t consider private-sector unions, for the most part, a serious enemy nowadays), Democrats open to fiscal sanity, Democrats open to property rights rather than “urban redevelopment” social engineering schemes out of City Hall. And by the grace of God, there probably are some!

WHY I REGISTERED DEMOCRAT
By Howard Ahmanson

About six weeks ago, I, a known leader of the Religious Right in California, decided to reregister in the Democratic Party. Why did I do this?

Well, I think I was reading about the budget struggles and threatened purges in the Legislature, and I was getting more and more tired and disgusted of it, and I realized that, had I been a Republican assemblyman, I could have hardly escaped being purged myself. The Republican Party of the State of California seems to have decided to narrow itself down to one article of faith, which may be described as NTESEBREE: No Tax Shall Ever Be Raised Ever Ever. Now, I’m concerned about this constant tax ratcheting, but I don’t think this is the answer. The Democratic Party in California, however, is now so big and diverse and all-inclusive that it has ABSOLUTELY NO PRINCIPLES WHATSOEVER. The Hollywood and San Francisco establishments within the Party may hold to some pretty detestable principles, but the party as a whole? I have not changed any of my opinions. There is not a single right-wing opinion I hold that some section of the Democratic Party doesn’t support it. Opposed to “marriage equality” and freewheeling abortion rights? A lot of Democrats of color will agree. And also many of them will agree on the importance and social justice of vouchers and tax credits for non-government schools. Opposed to fiscal irresponsibility? A lot of Silicon Valley Democrats will probably agree. Opposed to “urban redevelopment” schemes that run small business and residents out of the way for the benefit of the politically important? Got a high view of property rights? Lots of Democrats, including Robert Cruickshank and Senate President Darrell Steinberg, agree with me to a considerable degree.

Evangelical?
This guy really confuses me. So his only beef is his taxes aren't being raised? Is he kiddin' me? His opinions are mostly conservative, but he's changing parties anyway? I guess he doesn't OWE us an explanation, but forgive me if I question his duplicity.

Ahmanson -- he's actually powerful
Any number of posts here ask: Who is Howard Ahmanson, Jr.? They seem to think that because he is "unknown," he therefore is a non-story.

Well, here's a primer. He's not unknown. In fact, for many years he's been one of the most wealthy and powerful shakers in the California Republican Party. His father, Howard Ahmanson, Sr., was the prime player in the state's S&L/thrift industry back in the 50s and 60s. The son inherited a lot of money. And a lot of free time. He delved into the nutjob R.J. Rushdoony's theocratic philsophy for a while, but that's well behind him.

Ahmanson's party switch means a lot of money is moving to the other side -- a word to the wise who think that the GOP's future lies with the radical religious Right. Kathleen Parker was right to bring this up. His decision ought to send a clear message: The Religious Right is a bad investment for our party.

If you want to call me a "RINO," go right ahead. I've been called worse.

What kind of Christian is that, really?
If I inherited great wealth, I might not be terribly worried about higher INCOME tax rates either. (See also: Ted Kennedy, et al.) But it's not very Christian of him to favor increased taxes that make it harder for others to achieve, on their own, even a fraction of what he was GIVEN.

Alan, Good Quote
Simply put: if you want more of something subsidize it. If you like poverty and all that it brings, have the government give
money to the poor in the guise of a hand up.

Society is the best means for helping people in need. We are losing our compassion for one another because of government meddling in society's legitimate role.

Ellen
You say that the poor need access to health care, education and job training. Sounds good. What does it all mean.

Who exactly are these poor?

Are you saying that no one who is poor (whatever that is exactly) has ever, every lifted themselves out of poverty without these things? I find that hard to believe. If some have then it isn't essential as you would suggest here.

What do you mean access to health care? Hospitals taking any public money have to accept everyone who presents themselves. Is this not access to health care? If not why not? I think the real argument is whether everyone is entitled to health insurance as a right. I keep hearing that costs will go down if we do that. If that is true then why do taxes have to go up to pay for it? Why don't these brilliant government minds just fix the problem and send me a refund check. I'll tell you why. They are either dishonest, stupid, or both.

I will grant you education. I just read the Constitution and didn't find the word education in it anywhere. Is this a legitimate role of the Federal Government?

There are many questions raised by these simple pronouncements and assumptions. Not the least of which is the incorrect assumption that resources are without limit and government is the best agent for allocation. Both are wrong assumptions.

ellen Location: OH
"...to emerge from poverty in today's world you need a good education and access to health care."

In California we have free education and health care for the poor, including illegal aliens.
"access to health care" please explain how that lifts someone from poverty.
Good education is available from community colleges and state colleges for nominal fees which can be eliminated or reduced by gov. and private grants. The remainder can be financed with student loans.

We have a program called WIC (the illegal aliens love it)
WIC provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

Free education, free healthcare, WIC, welfare payments, and they work and pay no income taxes. No wonder there's a huge sucking sound coming out of Mexico!

p.s. Don't tell anyone in Ohio about all the freebies in CA, the state is bankrupt;we can't take them off your hands.

Hey Anne
Just flipping through. As you know I've thought for a time the Republican position regarding taxes was wrong.

First, if trying to convince being against (taxes in this case) is not the best policy. Second, some level of taxation is necessary to have a society. So just saying, as Republicans do, that they want to keep your taxes low isn't a strong message. Third, borrowing to fund government when one doesn't wish to tax is not responsible as Democrats, pre-Obama, were only too happy to point out. They don't seem bothered by Barry's approach to government.

It seems to me that the proper considerations are to return to the principles of limited government, which is to say constrain the Federal Government to its Constitutional boundary. Second, we should right-size government at all levels. They should take no more from the economy than is necessary to maintain society and promote robust activity.

My argument is that government at all levels should be right-sized, and limited, to maximize every person's liberty. Just remember a government big enough to grant something is big enough to take it away.

Thanks Alan
Thanks, Alan. I loved the Benjamin Franklin quote. It's as timely now as it was when he wrote it.

I agree that giving money to the poor does not really help in the long run. BUT in order to emerge from poverty in today's world you need a good education and access to health care. We can argue about the merits of vouchers, charter schools vs. the public schools but that doesn't alter the fact that many inner city and rural schools are failing the children they're supposed to be serving. It's also true that parents are the most important teachers any of us will ever have. At least President Obama sets a good example by taking such an active role in his childrens' lives and education. I hope inner city parents will listen to him when he implores fathers to be there for there kids and to turn off the tv and help kids with their homework. Maybe inner city boys will look to him and see that they don't have to be basketball stars or drug dealers to make their way in the world. We can only hope.

The poor need access to healthcare, education and job training. The low skill jobs of the past have moved to China. We need to find ways to help the millions of outsourced workers become productive members of today's (and more importantly tomorrow's) American society.

How is this "biblical" you bimbo?
I can't believe the Arizona Repugnant (oops, Republic) printed this drivel today. Who really gives a rat patooty about this contributor or this worthless "writer". Go home and play with your Obama dolls you twit!

This column goes to show ...
... why the GOP should NOT abandon the Conservative viewpoint for the centrist viewpoint. In doing so, we lose people like Ahmanson.

The GOP should have stuck to it's guns on the tax issue.

Helping the poor
"I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. -- I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer." — Benjamin Franklin - 1766

Let's sum it up
Kathleen Parker is writing this article to gloat because she thinks that religious conservatives have taken a big loss.

To her, this is wonderful, because she hates everything religious conservatives are.

Kathleen Parker is a woman filled with fear. She is terrified of being aligned with a seemingly weak political party. Darn it, if she could just ridicule religious conservatives enough to make them compromise their principles (but not stop voting as fiscal conservatives), she reasons, then the Republican party would be a stronger and safer place for her. And not so darn embarrassing.

I also suspect that she hates religious conservatives because she fears that they may be right, and she has many personal reasons for wanting them to be wrong. Like, fear of God actually being in control of her life, instead of keeping her illusion that she is in control. That's OK, Kath, sometimes the most antagonistic ones are the closest to the Kingdom.

The "loss" of this "influential" man (who I have never heard of) makes her think she is winning her little battle with religious conservatives. I suspect he'll be back--sounds like with all of his principles he is still quite the opportunist. Or when he finds out how much hatred there is in the Dem party for people with moral views that threaten them.

Political Fundraising-
We can relate to that.

Enough is more than enough.

It is time for all of this to end. Please see my blog here at Townhall.com for "A Proposed Solution ..."

There is a bit there about political fundraising.

What is the true Christianity?
I read Ms. Parker's article and posts written about it. I see so much angry name calling and vitriol. What would the REAL Jesus think of all this?

Jesus called for loving our neighbors and our enemies too. He told us not to judge others. It is God's job to judge humanity and we will be judged on the compassion we showed to "the least of our brothers and sisters"--the poor, the sick, imprisoned. Let those of you without sin cast the first stone.

Jesus told us not only to love one another but to forgive.

Jesus never said anything about gay marriage or homosexuality at all for that matter. He did say a lot about divorce but divorce is common and accepted in our society so I guess it's okay to just ignore that part of the Bible.

There's an excellent Christian website called Matthew 25 Network which I believe reflects the true Christ. Check it out. Personally, I think the people who wrote the various (and often conflicting) books of the Bible were inspired by God but also limited by the knowledge and culture of their times. So often religious people seem to put God in a box and limit His scope to that which we humans can comprehend. God is not a Christian. God is God.

He's What?
"Now 58, Ahmanson is recognized as one of the nation's leading evangelical Christians..."

So, that's how we know they are Christians; By their wallets. May your money perish with you, is what Peter said. I concour.

The "successful" pick "winners"
Just a thought, but Ahmanson may have done the same thing that Warren Buffet did. These highly successful men got where they are by picking "winners." It is against their nature to not throw off a loser, principles or not. Even though Obama's policies could only hurt Warren Buffet, he championed him anyway. (Then, started complaining about Obama's policies almost immediately).

Ahmanson might just be picking the "winner" here. The Republican party, at present isn't looking much like a winner.

Ahmanson influential? Never heard of him and I have been a Christian since 1991 and an avid consumer of Christian and Conservative media. I guess the people I consider influential aren't so because they have money, but vision and conviction.

moderates
I say: "Don't let the door hit you in the _ss". Just what we need- another "centrist" so-called moderate telling conservatives what they should and shouldn't be thinking. Now that he has switched parties he will get to see real intolerence first hand!!

Q&A Parker/Ahmanson
As a supporter of President George W. Bush, how would you rate his presidency now? What did he do right and wrong?

For the most part, he did all right. But in the end, I think he was a big spender. It was annoying for him to talk about tax cuts when he was doing that. On the social issues, he did pretty good.

During a 1985 interview with the Orange County Register, you said your political agenda was “total integration of biblical law into our lives.” Is that still the case?

That’s a bit compromised. We have considerable biblical law in the law now. We’ve already succeeded in outlawing murder and robbery and perjury. I don’t think there’s anything wrong or unconstitutional about that.

Well, I think your critics would be talking about things such as biblical treatment of gays.

I certainly don’t mean that now. Maybe in my wild youth.

What changed?

I guess just living and aging or something.

Have you mellowed with age?

I suppose so.

Do you have any gay friends?

I don’t think so, but I would stand with them on my opinions. And I would be willing to tell them what I think they should do.

Which is?

First come to Christ and then recover.

So you think homosexuality is something from which one can recover?

Yes, I think we can recover from a lot of other things, too. But I think we’re all equal as individuals.

It stilll amazes me...
... the vitriol hurled towards Ms. Parker. If you don't like her writing, there's a simple antidote: don't read her. However, trying to silence her only seeks to restrict the opportunity of those of us who prefer to read her.

Silencing those with whom you disagree is not the correct approach, nor are personal attacks and insults. Instead, why not debate their points with facts?

rushdoony?
It's dishonest to limit Ahmanson to Rushdoony. Hardly what he's about. That was YEARS ago and rushdoony is dead. Looks like Parker never heard of Ahmanson and did a quick Wiki search.

Brian
Better get your facts straight. Jindal's mother was four months pregnant when she and her husband moved here. Jindal was born in America, that makes him a natural born citizen.

http://www.usconstitution.net/consttop_citi.html

The world really has gone mad
At least Rushdoony isn't alive to see this. Can't blame him for leaving the Republican Party, but to go Democrat? From the frying pan of evangelical intolerance into the fire. Why not Constitution Party or even Libertarian?

ha!
This is funny. Type in "Influential Evangelicals" and Ahmanson is number 1. But it's ok, Gestell has never heard of him, so the TIME list must be wrong.

"it's ok," so Gestell says. Bet she hasn't heard of half the people on the list and I could name a dozen more--without googling.

Really Gestell?
"I'm a liberal who pays a lot of attention to evangelistic conservatives and I'd never heard of him."

Are you the end all and be all? If you don't know, than it can't be true? is that how it works?

I bet money I could give a long list of influential evangelicals that you "have never heard of."

Hey...,Thanks! ... if he knew of you ,he would want you on his team with the rest of his blithering idiots."

He does know me but I do savor your bitterness. LOL

Rowly...
Thank you for the encouraging words. And I will definitely keep you informed on the mental status of sir-drinks-a lot. Because I believe by doing so, I am providing a very valuable public service: )

Kind Regards.

The Psychiatrist
Thank you for your professional assessment of your patient. I know it is against the rules to reveal a patient's medical records, etc.

This is a special case,no doubt, since he has access to a computer 24/7 and is able to harass anyone he sees fit. He never has a positive word to say, usually just putdowns and ridicule.

He says he does this pro bono. I seriously doubt that. Would a prost!tute work 24/7 pro bono? I seriously doubt it. Arianna expects to see results or else he would be fired just as Obama fired GM's boss.

Keep us informed about 'His Bardness'. We eagerly look forward to any bit of info on him.

LMAO...LOL..ROTFLMAO.

No big deal
The defection of Ahmanson is no big deal. I'm a liberal who pays a lot of attention to evangelistic conservatives and I'd never heard of him. Besides, as lots of TH readers have made clear, no one who is a Christian can possibly turn Democrat. Since this guy turned Democrat, he's clearly not a Christian. That should settle the matter.

I do agree with readers who think that this is yet another of KP's attempts to show that conservatives should become more moderate. I think that's absolutely the wrong advice. If you right-wingers want to get power, you have got to keep your doctrine pure and your organization equally pure. No RINOs, no CINOs, no gays, no pro-abortionists, no evolutionist, no AGW believers. Make sure you limit your organizations to biblical Christians who are straight. And above all, attack, attack, attack Obama. Somebody please dig up the old Southern "massive resistance" rhetoric, do a few revisions, and start motivating a mass protest movement against the Federal government. Disrupt its operation, shut it down. If you start doing this, you'll see just how much popular support your conservatism has.

About Hal Donahue
To the good people of Town Hall: If I may, I would like to say a few things about Hal Donahue.

First, I would like to offer my humblest apologies on behalf of myself and my staff for failing to keep Hal in his padded room, and away from a computer. Because of this failure, he has managed to log on to TH and bore every thinking person to tears with his constant babbling about the virtues of Liberalism.

Second, it is important--in order to make sense of his inanity--to understand what he is suffering from. So I will give you a little background info on him.

Hal's mental development is extremely slow, as evidenced by the fact that he took his first steps, ( i.e. started walking) at the age of six; He started talking at the age of ten, and his first words were " Government ", " Taxes ", and " LMAO " ( in that order ). When he was sixteen, and finally stopped breast-feeding, his parents thought it best ( finally ) to seek professional help.

They decided to bring Hal to the " Mental Care Facility " where I work as a Janitor. . .er. . .psychiatrist. After much evaluation of the subject, I came to the conclusion that Hal was suffering from the very same thing that millions of other Americans suffer from : It's called HUTRCS ( head-up-the-rectal-cavity-syndrome ). In other words: Liberalism!

It should be said that not all who have this disease exhibit the same symptoms as Hal, e.g, talking and walking late, or breast-feeding into his mid teens, etc; Never the less, all those who are afflicted with HUTRCS are oblivious to reason, logic, and facts.

So, I hope this explains why Hal--who is in his sixties--acts like a giddy teenage girl ( or boy ) and uses " LMAO " and " LOL " to express himself.

Thank you for your time.

STRAW MAN POSITION
According to Ms. Parker, Mr. Ahmanson "was offended by the California Republican Party's insistence during a recent state budget battle that there would be no tax increases for any reason, no matter what." What she failed to even mention in her article is that the California Republican party broke at the end and supported the tax increases in history, along with Governor Schwartzeneger. Many of these Republicans are already the subject of recall action and proposition 1A that they voted for to extend the tax hikes for an additional two years is already losing in the poles. Mr. Ahmanson got it wrong. The California Republican party got it wrong. We can do without either.

hal donahue
Hey...,Thanks! Thanks for turning everywhere you go to post into an abyss of stupidity!

You are the Tokyo Rose of Town Hall. Barry Dunham could not have a more willing lackey,(that's you Hal), and he isn't even aware of it.I am certain, if he knew of you ,he would want you on his team with the rest of his blithering idiots.

My guess is that the GOP has lost part
of its following, not because of social issues, but because not enough has been made of social issues by the Republican candidates. Chances are, if the general public knew what was in store for it as a result of having Democrats both in the Oval Office and dominating Congress, they'd have voted a bit differently. My guess is that they didn't know that their public restrooms would become "unisex." In Colorado, where such a law was passed last spring, women have been intruded upon by men in the ladies' rooms, and at least one little girl was subjected to the sight of a man exposing himself to her in the "ladies' room." Is that the kind of change people voted for? I sincerely doubt it, but I knew it was coming last spring. How? I listen to SOCIAL conservatives. They warned us what was coming down the pike long ago. Now it appears to be here. At the rate things are changing, I doubt the 2010 election will make any difference. It will be too late, if it comes at all. It appears to me that other voters elected a Communist government.

I'd not heard of either one--thanks Kathleen, for this informative and rather centrist article. I like your style!

Good Riddance To Another RINO
The more RINO's that can be weeded out,for whatever reason, the better. If not for RINO's, we would not have the dictator-wannabe ,B.Hussein.

It doesn't matter now who comes and goes, unless there is a Devine Intervention,we are on a sinking ship, steered by Democrats and RINO's.

Confusion and surprise?
I suspect both are waiting for him.

a) Jindal is also, and documented, as a non-natural-born-citizen (both parents were non-citizens when he was born), so is ineligible in 2012, or ever, for POTUS and CIC.

b) He's in for a major shock as far as "how tolerant they really are". The only tolerance in the Democratic party is for enemies of the US. No others need apply.

Good News
The GOP gets most of its money from small donors. The big fat cats give to the lib-nazi party because they know where the corruption is. The GOP is doomed because most Americans are either stupid, ignorant, lazy, or corrupt, and the government promises to help stupid, ignorant, lazy, and corrupt people take advantage of the people who are dumb enough to pay taxes.

The Lord doesn't need man or his money..
"I have no need of a bull from your stall
or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.

I know every bird in the mountains,
and the creatures of the field are mine.

If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

Neither of us will have to do so because neither of use want abortions to increase we want them to decrease unlike your ilk who actually cause more abortions; I guess because you get money or donations?

He appears to have a major difference with the California Republican Party on one thing. I, in much lesser part, support gay rights, gay marriage, won a local ALCU award once, and am Republican. Because the Democrats are pro abortion. That was the only reason I switched. Because I am no one in particular, nobody noticed. He is still going to send money to the same causes whether his name ends in an "R" or a "D".

Politically incoherent doners
There are many rich and brilliant entrepeneurs who have limited knowledge of American history and no coherent political view of government. They might be insecure or just opportunistic, but they swing and sway and switch allegiances and parties. I'm tired of thinking about them.
Walter Annenberg was a close friend of Ronald Reagan, then gave millions to the Marxist public school reform that Obama was shoving in. Go figure.

Once again, I have wasted a few minutes of my life to read this crap. When will I ever learn...

Whoop te do
He switched! More than likely he was
just like Spector,Snow,Collins who are repub in name only!

Invasion of the Democrat Party
After Reagan beat Carter and it was apparent the Democrat Party was in decline, many long-time Democrats switched parties and became "Republicans". Eventually, they began to pull the party to the left, to the point that now the Republican Party is more like the Democrat Party of the 80s than it is like the Republican Party of the 80s.

Maybe it's time for Conservatives to start infiltrating the Democrat Party and pulling them back from the radical edge to which they have moved. Maybe Rush's Operation Chaos has more merit than most of us thought.

For Anne
Anne,

I had to chuckle at your response to the other poster where my words were quoted back at me to try to engage me in his running dialog that has been ongoing for far too long. Eventually you would think the guy would get writer’s cramp. Personally, I no longer waste my time with such posters. When I find someone who has an honest question or who might be bitterly hurt and who needs to be heard, then I may well respond. Years ago I posted under a different name, and I had many such conversations then.

This gives me an opportunity now though to address this subject of who is and who is not a Christian—and even who has a right to judge. I forget the missionary’s name, but in decades past he visited China to contact Christians who were part of the underground church that was being persecuted by the Chinese communists. He came into contact with an old woman who was thought to be a Christian, and yet who was also wise enough not to trust strangers. When he told her that he was a Christian, she replied in an unexpected way: “Prove it. Pray.” I can’t recall what he said her exact words were, but that was the essence of her reply.

The missionary did in fact pray. She knew at once that he was a Christian, and then she prayed. He said that her prayer was something extraordinarily precious, and he was greatly humbled as this little old lady poured out her heart to God.

So, I’ll close in saying that it is certainly not our place to judge with a condemning attitude (wanting to see someone consigned to hell), but it is our place to examine everything carefully and hold fast to that which is true, to avoid evil, and to sharpen our senses to discern between good and evil….all of which I can of course support scripturally. At the same time I know that the natural man (one who is not spiritual) cannot understand these things, which is another point that the Bible openly acknowledges.

I need to attend to some other things now. Best wishes…..

A No Moral Idiot Rino
Evidently this man votes with his money. One day he will stand in judgement and have to answer for his throwing his vote and money to the side of the murdering abortionists. God says, "It would be better that a man have a millstone tied around his neck and thrown into the oceans than to offend one of these (children) (quote is paraphrased). I wouldn't trust this man on the battlefield to protect my back from the enemy. His real name is Frog.

in Defense of Howard
If Howard Ahmanson is defecting to the DNC, it's a big deal. The man has a LOT of money. And no doubt is a major funder for the RNC.

I know Howard. My husband and I had dinner with him years ago. And he and my husband have corresponded over the years.

A more socially awkward individual, you probably will not meet. But neither will you find a more compassionate and intelligent man. He has money just to give it away, but fears giving to the wrong causes.

He's a genius with a photographic memory. When he travels, he carries along a suitcase just for books. In just a couple days he'll not only read them ALL, but will quote you paragraphs from everything he's read.

He's not a "brat," as some have called him, not "godless." Faith in God and Jesus Christ are what guide him. If he is switching party's the RNC needs to do some soul searching. And I think they better pay heed to what Howard is saying.

Are you a coward?

Are you too stupid???

What is your problem???

Tolerance in the Democratic Party
Says Ahmanson: "We'll see how tolerant they really are."

Don't hold your breath waiting for some tolerance, Mr. Ahmanson. I've been a born-again Christian for over 30 years, and have noted all the attacks on Christians in our media and in our culture. Where do most (I'd say 85 - 90%) come from? People aligned with the Democrat party, the "party of tolerance and enlightenment", the "party of the people", the party of Frank and Dodd.

Mr. Ahmanson would have done better to have gone Independent in my opinion.

For Clivesdad
Well said. I would only offer that there is a gross misunderstanding when it comes to the label of "Christian". Consequently, I would not be too quick to believe that all who claim to be Christians are in fact wholly devoted to Christ and accept His teachings. They might in an abstract way admire His example and His message, but real faith in God produces a changed life--something that Jesus Christ also taught and the apostles explained in detail. That you are not easily swayed by those who claim to be Christians is to your credit. There are many, many counterfeits, which you obviously understand. I'll go a little further since I started down this road:

What scares me is the religious and cultish devotion to Obama. As a believer I am called to pray for our leaders, and I do pray for Obama. But it is not for his success as a socialist--it is for his soul and for some humility, for anyone who could comfortably sit under the teachings presented in the church that Obama attended has serious problems with a defective knowledge of God as He has revealed Himself in and through Christ. Those teachings in that so-called church are incompatible with Christianity.

Kathleen keeps searching and successfully finding the drones on the pseudo right to verify her conviction that the Rebublicans need to "change course". There are and have always been plenty to fulfill that quota. The fact this guy lives the high life should not surprise us in the least. It's so typical to see this type lean over into the libs playing field and justify raising taxes on the people. I have two younger children and live in California and my deduction per child is declining to satisfy the need to pay down a budget that rewards sloth. I have a mortgage and I am told to foot the bill for the drones who overextended themselves. The fact of the matter is that there are two classes of people in this world- the decent and the indecent. This guy can be the greatest Christian leader in the world and it makes no difference to me. I could never "move" to the dems- as their whole philosophy of hammering at the middle class, supporting abortion and rewarding bad behavior is antithetical to anything Christian. So, Kathleen keep finding the converts to the "change" you wish to see. The left has done NOTHING for 50 years of attempting to feed the poor and stop poverty- they have in fact increased it and have created a dependent underclass. Welcome to more of the same with or without a Christian face it doesn't work.

Hmmm, he is not exactly a household name among any Christians or conservatives that I know.

Bit of a reach, eh Kathleen?

For my fellow conservatives: the reason Ms. Parker is allowed to continue to contribute to Townhall is our fault...mine included today. Townhall is interested in web traffic so that its advertisers can be assured of visibility. As long as we read, vote on, and comment on Parker's articles she will have her slot assured here--regardless of consistent one-star ratings. Same thing goes for engaging the liberal trolls. Their visits to these sites proves traffic which equates to advertising dollars. This is a business--not an ideological endeavor by committed conservatives.

Actually I
don't know what Howard A. is talking about. California is getting a lot of new taxes, and that is precisely the problem. California is the most over taxed and over regulated state there is.

If you want to see what the country is going to look like in four years, just look st California currently. If Howard A is going to walk around dazed and confused, obviously never part of the real working world, then he fits right in with the Dems. they can have him, but the Daily KOS, Huffington crowd, along with the other looneys will skin him alive lest he give in to their demands.

Thus have gone 100,000's of people with
many more to follow. The extreme fundamentalist conservatives have destroyed the Republican Party by failing to govern; dividing the nation and refusing to accept responsibility for failure in the international and economic arenas. You folks are sad do nothing obstructionists.

Ther is a common thread ...
between the wealthy and the poor.

1) Their detachment from their children.
2) Their dependance on government to initiate and sustain their financial agenda.
3) Their dependance on the large swath of the population between them for their support, directly or indirectly coerced from the middle by legislation.

Ahmandad
Admittedly I am perplexed by his reasoning. The only reasonable explanation seems to be that the GOP has truly sabotaged itself with the likes of Schwartz...of California, Specter, and all the other liberals masquerading as conservatives. Really!

the party needs to investigate people before they get behind them. This non-understanding of Conservatives is inexcusable. I, too, am switching (already in my voting, etc.). I am a true Conservative not a Republican. Therefore, I see no alternative but to become part of the Constitution Party. Mr. Ahmandad, we could sure use your funding and connections.

Kathleen pseudo woman
Let me see how many women I can tick off. Kathleen, like most "modern" women, is trying to be androgynous. We have been told since bra burning days that if we want to be "good enough" or "equal" that we must think and behave like men. How stupid. Men and women are not supposed to compete with each other but rather compliment each other. Anything with two heads is a monster. Thus men qualify. But somebody has to tame the beast! Isn't this fun?! Really, if women would stay home, sit down and shut up, Jesus would return tomorrow because thats how long it would take men to really screw things up. Read the front of the book. Eve screwed up and we've been accused of being the problem by every ensuing Adam since then. I say let the men have it. We usually outlive them anyway:) Oooohhh, think I got more than just the women!

Ever since her plane ride with "The Light of The World"Ms. Parker has behaved like a High-School sophomore asked to the senior prom by the quarterback of the football team.It appears she will write anything no matter how ridiculous to show she is his girl. So good by good riddens, I say. Christians are still supporting the Party, just not as deeply as before. Why?
We are all suffering from the misguided and stupid leadership we just suffered and the ignorant and wasteful leadership that has be placed into power.
The liberals can spend, spend and spend till they are blue in their Arse, the America I once knew will never be fixed by them.
Clean Coal, is a joke that will only get bigger laughs from Ecologists and Enviromentalist. Making Autoworkers into Nurses will only last till they have a glut and put them on part time.
Building more fast food and discount shops will only make the Average American poorer will, those in the few major cities wil fair better, they will be the flunkies of the Wealthy Demoncrats.

Defections--Is that all You've Got???
Ooh I'm soooo scared!! What is the point Parker? Slow to come up with something really relevant on a conservative forum? So you wind up picking through the trash? Were we supposed to get all teary eyed over this guy who has switched his allegiance to the Dems, but will support Jindal?

Gee, I'm supposed to believe that THAT decision won't have its own defection in the future????

Well Kathleen you should be so happy today. Another "Republican" just like you, has left the GOP of the dems. I know whenever I see your name is brings me joy and comfort - it is time for you to write for the Huggington Post - as we don't need you here.

O is a fraud and a cheat
and until he produces a legitmate birth certificate, I would never address him as president.

I also don't understand exactly why 24 hrs. afrer *Joe the Plumber* asked a simple question of candidate O, Joe's MVA records were available, his plumbing license was published, and his marriage status was common knowledge, but no one can get a hold of O's birth certificate or Harvard records.

They must have been transferred to Fort Knox through part of O's million-dollar defense against releasing any of his personal documents.

Figures
Figures this doorknob would ferret out this "story" so she could throw it in our face on townhall.com. I really don't care about some whiny millionaire faux Christian that has thrown his support behind the abortion president. I say good riddance. But just like a petulant child, Parker couldn't wait to let us know about this CINO's defection to the democratic party. Her rantings now require her to spend inordinate amounts of time tracking down these obscure accounts that build support for HER decision to defect to the democratic party. I won't be losing any sleep over Ahmanson's decision, but I bet HE will.

Kathleen Parker
You are a worthless writer. I do not know why Townhall wastes space with your ineffectual nothingness.

Who cares if this one man transfers party affiliation?

I am not a republican party devotee, but a devout Christian Conservative.

You on the other hand, can't figure out what you believe.

Maybe this millionaire wanted to change the statistics of giving for the pathetic (democrat) party, who are the cheapest, government sucking citizens in history.

I don't care.

We are stewards of God's resources. One millionaire "searching for himself and a cause" does not worry God one way or another.

Maybe you should retrain yourself for a new career.

This is the first article f yours I tried to stomach in about 6 months, confirming it will be the last.

Obama is American
J10- Obama is American, Americans are a mix of the world;I am an American-I am a MIX of people before me. If you must put a color on him-go back to ART CLASS- black and white gives you GRAY. If you want a color lighter- mix in some white. You could say there is a little White and Black in all of us,just more of one in some people. So we have a MAN president,or we have a GRAY president.{No charge for this tutoring} Oh ya-think on this. someday Obama may have a Dark colored san-in-law, and a very Light grandchild.

RINO's
Do we have a Party platform? Is there any Conservatives left? Out with the RINO's, Outwith Michael Steele! Out with McCain! Will a Conservative step forward and save our Party and our country!! In with Bobby Jindal, In with Sarah Palin!
If any elected official identifies theirself as a Republican, they most support the Party platform or stop using the R as an identifier.

A and B
A) It would seem that the good Mr. Ahmanson is an excellent candidate for a lofty position in the Democratic Party. Wikipedia informs us of his anomalous mindset and subsequent “colorful” associations which place him in the ranks of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi.

B) Ms. Parker, it seems, is now doing her research for her articles at Wikipedia. Seems that she prefers copying and pasting the leftist dogma found on its pages, calling it research. This revelation explains everything.

Another bi-polar twit
who is naturally at home with the dhimmicrats, the party of envious, ADHD, children. He doesn't mind higher taxes because he doesn't pay any, like Kennedy, Kerry, etc. We always hear about the few people who jump ship on the weepublicans, but not peep about the tens of thousands who have given up on the dems. I personally know dozens.

I have a wealthy friend who inherited his Father's investments and properties after he committed suicide. My friend was a spoiled rich kid, in no way prepared to take over, but he worked hard and quickly become competent enough to protect and increase his families wealth.

His Mother gave him a plaque for his desk which reads something like, "Those who inherit wealth must earn it again before they possess it."

My friend is also very Christian, very conservative, and I assume, charitable. He doesn't give his money away because he's guilty about it, nor does he think it's fair the the guvmint should take what it wants either.

P.S. Everybody have a good Hour of Power last night? Tucson looked like maybe 2-3 people gave a rat's patoot about Earth Hour, and "let there be light" seemed to be the order of the night.

Ho-hum

Anyone who can be ambivalent about the new president's pursuit of infanticide is a stunning example of what is wrong with them, not what is wrong with the Republican Party. I'm sure your own ambivalence, Kathleen, is a sign of something amiss with your central convictions. Personally, I could scarcely tolerate McCain and flounder to the right with Palin to be most fortunate--at least we lost with some evidence of conservative character.
So drawing the line on tax increases is intolerable for Ahmanson...excuse me if I cry later. Noone tried to hush him when he stood up for tax increases. Indeed, let him see how tolerant his new pals are with whatever 'conservative' beliefs he still holds on to.
Get out the violins...

Political Stew---
Through It All- I've Learn To Trust In JESUS-I've learned To Trust In GOD.....These words from a song are all so true as to who you can trust.Take History out of school for old stories aren't important..{STUPID PEOPLE THINKING} If you don't study it,it will repeat itself.Fact is we only have Government...Not REPUBLICANS or DEMORCRATES.They hope the fence when they sit by someone who wears another perfume/after shave than theirs now it's just Political Stew of kids flanting their money.

Kathleen Parker
Another article about the loss of a loon. Who cares if this inherited wealth bozo wants to take his ball and go home because he isn't getting enough attention? Go sir, and take Kathleen Parker with you.

Help!
We need to support the Libertarian Party

Ms. Parker
Thank you for showing the "World" how the republican party deals with "Traitors"! Mr. Ahmanson decides to leave your party and now he has Tourette and is the "Victim" of a lonely childhood. I don't know if you're making a basis for"Guilt" or"Insanity". You and others talked about Mrs.Clinton. The woman is an "Angel" compared to you. I guess there is no chance that Mr.Ahmanson will "Change" his mind? I am going to take a "Wild Guess",Hell No. We may need a "Third Party" after this. Damn....

If Parker is a Republican

What's the difference?
======================

There is no difference in her and the Democrats is there?

Christians who are Democrats
I will never understand how Democrats who believe that life begins at conception could possibly be Christians.

What's the difference?

J-10
now you are talking! glad we could be of service to you. :)

Ranger
You win. I'm giving up on conservatism.
Obama will be my Shepard, I shall not want.

I don't think anyone should ever have to work again, especially me. I'll run around necked, in tune with nature, live of the fruit of trees. Thoughts of shared sacrifice will warm me at night. Knowing that the mice in ca. are safe will relieve my guilt. I'll never fa*t again so I can reduce my carbon footprint. And all those nasty repubs will live horrible lives because they can't deal with a black president, who won, and they just need to get over it.

Nooo!!!
First Parker, then Ahmanson; whatever shall we do!

Go away, Kathleen
Why are your columns on a conservative site? What kind of ratings do they get here at Townhall?

Go back to the WaPo and write about Obama's Inner Buddha. Or ask your friend Andrew Sullivan for a gig at the Atlantic.

which is it
Parker writes:
"Ahmanson -- one of three major funders of California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriages -- has abandoned the GOP for the Democratic Party.
===================
Then writes:
"So, without fanfare, Ahmanson printed out an online form and mailed in his Democratic Party registration.

"mailed in his Democratic Party registration."

"has abandoned the GOP for the Democratic Party."
