Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- It is the curse of the journalist always to be present, but never really There.

The job requires that we stand slightly apart, seeing but not believing; hearing without being seduced. We jot down the words, careful not to let them get under our skin. Like surgeons in the operating room, we can't afford to become emotionally involved lest we notice the blood and let the scalpel slip.

Then comes the rare instance that penetrates the armor, when something causes you to put down the pad, turn off the camera in your head, and become part of the moment. The short list in recent history includes the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., the signal marches on Washington, the terrorist attacks of 9/11. To those we may now add Inauguration Day 2009.

It would be nice to have just the right words to sum up what happened Tuesday. As for so many in this frigid city, le mot juste is just beyond reach. This is why we have poets.

The days preceding had tested Washington's tolerance for the prosaic. Think Disney World and Mardi Gras combined. Add subfreezing temperatures, impossible traffic and maddening security. Throw in helicopters buzzing, sirens wailing, interminable lines and, oh yes, battalions of porta-potties standing sentry along the perimeter of America's Paris.

Despite confusion and frustration, the mood suggested that those helicopters were dropping fairy dust into the ozone. All aggravations seemed to fade as the sun rose on the event that drew perhaps millions to be part of the swearing-in of the first African-American president of the United States.

We knew it was coming. We had already exhausted the story before it was fully written. And yet, when the hour finally arrived and Obama raised his right hand, his presidency was somehow not quite imaginable.

Sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, extremities numb despite layers of wool, and seeing so many gathered to witness this thing they called "change" was, dare I say it, awesome. That most-annoying hipster term for anything remotely acceptable is suddenly useful for its intended purpose.

For awe is the truest word to describe what transpired and what was inspired.

It is not only awe for Obama's meteoric rise to the highest human power. It is not only that so many trekked so far to be present for the moment. It is not even awe for the peaceful transfer of power for which Americans are deservedly proud.

It is awe for what is, in fact, not change, but the natural, if difficult, progression of an ideal that is true and good and transcendent through time. Barack Obama's presidency isn't a change from, but a continuation of the American experiment toward its hoped-for destination.

Obama hinted at this in his speech by invoking American values of hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism. In honoring all those who came before, who fought and died from Concord and Gettysburg to Normandy and Khe Sanh, he reminded us that change is not a single event on Election Day, but an evolutionary process.

The change we've been waiting for? No, the goal we were always aiming for.

Americans really do believe in the dreams of our Founding Fathers, who envisioned and articulated what is at our human core -- the profound desire for a more perfect union. The vast majority of Americans really do believe, as Obama said Tuesday, in the "God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness."

And so, Barack Obama, biracial offspring of the American dream, came to be president.

It is now the day after. Work awaits, bills remain, wars persist. The afterglow is hard to sustain as the promise of yesterday becomes tomorrow's challenges. Armor on, cameras whirring, pens poised.

The march toward a more perfect union continues.

Good luck, Mr. President.

What?
What exactly is this sycophantic garbage doing on TH? Did I follow an off-site link to DKos without realizing it?

What's next Kathy? You gonna start describing which extremity the big O sends tingles down? Take a long walk off a short pier, and please hand off your conservative press credentials to someone deserving beforehand.

Excellent article! 5 stars!
It's great to read Ms. Parker's kind words about Obama. So many here are angry about Obama's victory. Why? It's your fault!!

You see, you all LET the GOP lose its way by failing to hold it accountable. When it became the party of big government social conservatism, you all went along with it (and denounced anyone who complained). When it advocated forcing banks to censor the Internet to stop adults from playing poker in its party platform, you all went along with it. When GOP politicians ran up the debt by TRILLIONS of dollars, you all went along with it. Now, you all wonder why Obama won. However, instead of looking in the mirror, you blame the media, including Ms. Parker, and everything else but the fact the the GOP lost its way.

Well, I'm glad Obama won (though I would have preferred Bob Barr, the candidate for whom I voted). You see, if the GOP won, there would be two big government parties. Now, there's a big government party and at least a possibility of a small government opposition.

Paul/Barr in 2012
'Nuff said

My Question
Would there have been the same reaction today if Barack Obama were a hard core conservative?

On that topic.....
Sen. Jon Kyl, the GOP Whip, went out of his way to grill Attorney General-nominee Eric Holder on his desire to ensure banks are censoring the Internet and to ensure the DoJ is spending lots of time and money trying to stop adults from participating in online gaming (which Kyl seems to think includes poker, though the Wire Act covers sports betting only).

Kyl also publicly stated his annoyance that banks didn't wish to censor the Internet and actually have the nerve to say so (I guess he thinks they are government agencies). He even said banks should stop complaining and should do this to show gratitude for the bailout cash. LOL!!!

So, that's your "limited government conservatism?" Don't act surprised that people are no longer falling for the scam.

I urge everyone to vote Libertarian until the GOP drops its big government ways.

Engineer
Your urge will fall on deaf ears. Few readers on this site are for small government. They love the GOP's huge government ways. If they didn't, they would have voted for Ron Paul in the primary. Alas, the Republican establishment and most of its loyal minions would rather Obama be President than Paul. The top brass can't stand the idea of truly small government and neither can the tools who vote for horrible GOP candidates like McPain and Huckleberry.

What's Missing from Obama's Speech?
Ms. Parker, could you please re-read the Declaration of Independence, and tell me what words are missing from this Obama quotation from today's speech?

"We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness."

My copy of the D of I states that in addition to the promise that all are equal and free and deserving of pursuing happiness, is the RIGHT TO LIFE. How did Obama miss that? he didn't, and that is why I can not vote for Democrats who misread and misquote our sacred documents, and more importantly, its meaning.

Nothing will change
Oh Parker...give it up. Are you and Olberman competing for who can best "service" our dear leader. Your talent for verbal fe11atio astounds me.

Obama's just another politician. In the end, deficits will continue to rise, taxes will go up, civil liberties will disappear, property rights will disappear, spending will increase, transfer payments will increase.

NO CHANGE!

huge mandate?
Kathleen,
Bush had 51% and his legitimacy was always questioned. He was fought at every turn, in spite of his 'new tone' approach to working with the other side of the isle. Obama received 52% and you gush like this? I think everyone should have an opinion. I think you should have a forum to write about yours, but it's normally on huffington's site.
Is the republican party completely dead, are conservatives completely dead? No wonder they can't get any more votes if this writer is the best we can do.
Where can I go and vote, candidates with this view won't ever get my support?

What the heck
is this nauseating fluff doing on a conservative site?

The Trouble With Liberals
Kathleen's latest column epitomizes what is wrong with liberals these days. They are readily seduced by superficialities like symbolism and pomp. They are easily impressed by "firsts" (first black, first woman, etc.), regardless of the actual qualifications, capabilities, or intentions of the individual who achieved them.

They are seduced by pretty speeches, lyrical phrases and high-sounding rhetoric that send them soaring emotionally, never thinking about what will happen if and when reality ever sets in.

Does one need to be a scholar of history to remind Kathleen that many a nation has been taken to very dark places by powerful symbols and soaring rhetoric?

I know you try hard......
Ms. Parker, and I will resist any type of bashing or name calling. Chris from Illinois had it correct, the RIGHT TO LIFE is basic for any society to thrive.

The symbolism of yesterday did'nt impact me at all because I know reality sets in the day after. And the civil rights issues of blacks?

If I recall my history, it was DEMOCRATS who were truly the racists, the plantation owners and Jim Crow supporters, but yet, this is the SAME Party blacks seems to believe cares for them. Even the KKK originated with DEMOCRATS.

The astounding irony is that it's BLACK babies that are aborted in large numbers....yet the blacks still support the Party.

The truth of the matter is simply that OBAMA is BI-RACIAL, so there is still NO BLACK PRESIDENT!

Only HALF of America believes in the principles of our Founding Fathers. You cannot have liberty or happiness without LIFE! The march towards a more perfect union that you allude to reminds me more of the march of Bataan, or the Trail of Tears.

The change that "we can believe in" is coming.....it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Reply to Jim in VA.....

"Black folks, alone, have the right to celebrate. Not you, Missy Whitebread."

Is that so?......

Millions of "whitebreads" worked SIDE BY SIDE with Blacks to end the scourge you allude to.....the victory belongs to ALL Americans who believe in equality...and should be celebrated as such.

Firsts
Firsts are always special. To see our country prove to the world and to those Americans that thought we wouldn't elect a black man, due to the color of his skin, is quite "awesome". I'm quite proud of my country (tho not for the first time). The thing is, conservatives have been sayn for awhile that we weren't a racist nation.

But, to be consistent (somethin Parker is not) other firsts should have been, or should be, recognized as well. When Colin Powell became the first black Sec of State, I don't recall any hype at all; any talk of "ceilings" broken. In fact, I remember the innuendo from the left that he was somehow a sellout to his race (by the left). Where was the press on that one?

So, now I have a dream. I dream of a day when the "free" press in this nation treats conservatives the same as they treat liberals. We're not there yet; but, God willin, we will be one day.

parker
seems to have missed the racist attack on American Indans, Asain Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, Southern European Americans, Northern European Americans in fact on all ethic groups making up American except for Black Americans. Guess that is change we can believe in open racism and bigotry particed in the white house.

For Jim and others
Jim:

1. He is half white. Somehow that side of the family never gets metnioned anymore. Would Black america have embraced him if he looked white? I have a nephew who looks completely white while his borhter looks ocmpletely Mexican: same Mom and Dad. Just wondering.

2. I don't know if you noticed but, whites voted for him. Whites stood out there in that cold to celebrate their President. Look at the numbers, um...He would not be president without the whites that voted for him.

3. He serves all Americans, and all Americans can jolly well have their opinion on 1/20/09. Even Ms. Parker who is taking sips of teh Kool-aid daily. It easy to get swept up in the euphoria of the day. Read some of the other columinsts in Townhall. File them for future reference and see where we are in two or so years. That seems about the right amount of time to asses and reflect on our new President's success.

God Bless America! (B L E S S Mr. Wright.)

And the Heavens opened...
I fell on my knees in tears! The power, the majesty, the glory of it all! I heard Osama Bin Laden stopped in his tracks and his heart was stirred. The idea of Jihad was suddenly anathema to him! I heard birds sing with more clarity and the sun seemed to shine brighter! I looked at my children and realized that "the fear is gone" "we are ALL going to be okay now"! I started to think- "My oh my we don't even need a standing army any longer do we?" I felt chills and sensations going up my leg. I realized God had sent His messenger (Or maybe this was God in human form again?) Oh its so clear to me now. I have seen the light. How foolish I have been. Before I was demanding proof of validity in terms of being qualified for the big job. I had demanded that a man have experience in leading people from an executive position. I had thought that a man whose resume was so thin should at least be judged somewhat by the associations he has kept. Oh how wrong I was. I have seen the light. Like Paul on the road to Damascus, and like Milton on the slave ship I have met my redeemer. Thanks THE ONE!!!!

The Orgasm of Kathleen Parker
She said:

“Then comes the rare instance that penetrates the armor when something causes you to put down the pad, turn off the camera in your head, and become part of the moment.”

“It would be nice to have just the right words to sum up what happened Tuesday”

“We knew it was coming.”

“to witness this thing they called "change" was, dare I say it, awesome”

“For awe is the truest word to describe what transpired and what was inspired.”

I knew it. Kathleen Parker was on heat all this time for Obama. Of course she was not the only one: CNN, MSNBC, FOX, The NYT, Washington Post, Oprah, and some “conservatives.”

And yesterday, for first time in her misleading life, her dream came true: she experienced the climax of sexual paroxysm: orgasm for Obama.

Important Moment
But a rather gushy article.

Look, I'm a liberal myself. I voted for O, not because he was black, but because I thought he was better than McCain / Palin. And I DO recognize that we have achieved an important milestone - one in which race does not matter, where we can elect a black man 53 to 46 (He won 53%, not 52%, of the popular vote - it just took a while for the last ballots to be tallied).

It's nice to have hope and to have competence again. But the problems that face us are severe and articles like yours are setting us up for a fall because the expectations are way too high.

Victoria it would be nice
if we had someone competent in the highest office saddly we don't. Maybe if the country survives we will have a chance to have a competent president in four years. Will be a new experence for those under 30 who at that time would have lived 24 years under incomptent presidents.

.
"Maybe if the country survives we will have a chance to have a competent president in four years"

And conservatives still don't know that this is going to be an eight year presidency! Priceless!

Parker's Idol
I can picture Miss K. Parker as one of those teenage girls waiting for their friend to come back out of the audition room for American Idol. When the person comes out with a yellow "I'm going to Hollywood" sheet of paper, the collective teenage females squeal with delight.

The writers for the Washington Post, NY Times, all the usual suspects filled out that crowd waiting outside that door. When Obama came on the scene, they pushed and prodded any detractors to see the error in their thinking. When other people tried out for the top spots in opposition of Obama they quickly shook off the vapors and attacked. Witness what the MSM did to Sarah Palin.

When Obama took his oath of office, he walked through the door with his yellow " I'm going to Hollywood" sheet and the collective media squealed like teenage girls. Miss K. Parker only joins the long list of MSM people displaying that sort of tingling-up-the-leg moment.

Must be weird
It must be weird to read columns from writers that don't vilify Obama as the end-of-all-things-good. I mean, this is Townhall.com!

It's also funny that if a conservative columnist writes something that is not completely anti-Obama, they are accused of not really being a conservative in the first place. It's like the first requirement to wear the precious conservative label is to despise and deride ALL things that are not in the tiny bubble called conservatism. There is little room for new ideas, little room for varying viewpoints. This is a classic mark of extremism and I'm sure the super-liberal people on the left would fit into this mold just as easily.

Pig
Kathleen, I'm going to refer you as pigwoman from now on. You really need to take your meds and quit as a "conservative" columnist. You're an utter joke now. Who the hell takes you seriously? I didn't even bother to read your column and I haven't read a single one for 2 months. I just came by to give you your deserved 1 check and read the funny comments (reply #16 was hilarious). You can stop the charade because nobody is going to hire you on the Obama staff and nobody likes you on either side of the aisle. Your career is finished! TH needs to get rid of this hog in heat. How long can TH keep posting her rants with the longest 1 checked rating in history.

Stb note I said
have a chance to vote not that the comptent candidate would win. Its also easly possible that in 4 years the republicans could pick someone as incomptent as obama to run they did so last year. Of course there was a comptent choice last year running as the Libertarian party candidate.

Nate as far as I know Parker has never been a conservative she has always been a bush style liberal. If and when obama does something positive for the country I'll cheer him for it. However being a naturial pessimist I'm not going to hold my breath that obama will turn out better than bush or clinton did.

Richard
My comment was meant to include people's reactions to more than just Kathleen Parker. She is not the only person to have columns appear on TH that are not 100% anti-Obama.

What happened to KP??
It's like someone clued her in that sucking down the liberal Kool-Aid will get her invited to more Georgetown cocktail parties. Hel-LOO, Kathleen?? He's a tax-spend quasi-Socialist liberal --- he's going to damage the country! I hope he doesn't; I hope he ignores the anti-American jack*sses in Congress and governs to the center-right majority, but radical liberalism was put on back burner for 8 years.....these foaming-at-the-mouth jackals are ready for "change" allright....they're HELLBENT on it.

Oh Kathleeen...
You should be quite proud of yourself that you were able to stop being a journalist(were you ever really?) and let yourself be swept up in the moment. Too bad you couldn't give Sarah Palin the same benefit of the doubt.

KP is a
Washington Post writer. It's not her fault. It's not her fault. It's not her fault.

She is who she is. It's Townhall that keeps buying her syndicated drivel. Complain to them.

The bleating continues....
Oh Baah Ma! Oh Baaah Ma! Oh! Baaaah! Ma!

Why oh why do I keep thinking (hoping) Kathleen Parker will come to her senses and bring us wonderful, inspired columns like this one from 2002:

http://yc2.net/parker.htm

for sdf
sdf says: "And conservatives still don't know that this is going to be an eight year presidency!"

Are you Nostradamus? If not, how do you know what's going to happen in 2012?

Here's a history lesson for you:

When Jimmy Carter was elected in 1976, nobody knew that four years later, he would lose in a landslide to Ronald Reagan.

When Bush 41 was elected in 1988, nobody knew that four years later, he would lose to Bill Clinton.

In politics, four years is an eon.

Come back in four years and we'll compare notes.

Right, Ms. Parker
Except for the pretentious blithering idiot masquerading as a poet, the insulting and uncouth "benediction" and the rather boring and disjointed inaugural address delivered by the president, it all was truly "awesome."

"Awe" or "aw, gee"
how much Kool Aide did Kathleen drink? Isn't she usually bashing Governor Palin? I guess Kathleen found time to attend the dumbed down inaugural with the crazy "blessing" by Joseph Lowry. I am disappointed in Denzel Washington - I always thought he had more sense. I guess I was wrong. Kathleen has become irrelevant.

Please leave Kathleen!
Kathleen, you are so far off base. Why are you on this site? Please townhall.com take her away!

CATIE COURIC AND KATHLEEN ???
THEY MUST BE LIBERAL SISTERS!

Sure Glad I DIDN"T GO!!
I could have been in big trouble had I ventured into Wash D&C yesterday!! I'm ALLERGIC TO
"FAIRY DUST"..CHEERS

Why is KP on townhall?
I thought by now (and after the bashing she gave Sarah Palin) Ms. Parker would have announced she had switched parties, so I was surprised to see her column posted today. It turns out it was just more of the Obama fest we have been subjected to everywhere, by everyone.

HATRED PERSONALIZED
The race baiters now have a face it is forever, President Barrack Hessin Obama. All bleeding heart liberals preaching mercy, grace, peace and
unity delighted in the debackled oath of office. What a great day for the United States in the name of civil rights every whinner could celebrate something about Obama. Blacks, mixed race families, drug abusers, homosexuals, marxist, muslems, racist, all claim Obama as their own. He is the leader of the free world dispite his brief and lifestyle of forced government intervention. But hatemongers writers are loving all the unity.

Yawn!
I see not much has changed on this site since I last visited. Another article fails to label Obama as the antichrist, & the articles' writter is villified; often in gauche & plebeian (orgasm for Obama?) language. Same old tribalism. Same old myopy. It sounds like the conservative movement is going nowhere- largely because conservaTIVES won't allow it to go anywhere. How tragic.

This comes as no surprise
Back on 9/19/07, KP typed, "Confession: I love Barack Obama…. I love Obama for his style, grace, intellect and his way with words. I want the healing power that an Obama presidency could deliver to this country."

I just drop in every so often to remind people, she sold out before THE Inauguration (as it must now be referred to, world without end, amen)

Lost
I am sad to see that we have lost Kathleen. She has left the conservative tent for parts unknown. She should soon be removed from this site.

all the TRUE CONSERVATIVES
to all who now hate KP. you all have the right idea. lets all wish, pray everynight that pres BO fails. lets wish that america gets wrost. that will show these none americans including KP thats what happens when people don't vote republican. we need to continue to listen to rush, ann, and sean's POSITIVE message. they will lead the way to greatness. KP negative message of unity is a discussting example of what the left is.

Jeez Loueez
Kathleen, you can remove your lips from Obama's posterior any time now.

The Parker Problem
Was there a point in there somewhere?

Servo69 -- LOL

Melissa -- We don't want American to fail. We only know to well that Obama's policy will fail because they have been proven failures in the past. Pardon us if we complain while Obama flushes our futures down the toilet.

Oh, and btw. You should capitalize American both because it is a proper noun and the best country in the whole world.

Even under this president.
