Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"I have discovered that all human evil comes from this, man's being unable to sit still in a room."
-- Blaise Pascal

WASHINGTON -- We are sitting at a restaurant counter, sipping wine and chatting, when my friend begins twittering.

Not in the usual way. Two women twittering turn no heads. Rather, she is "twittering" via her iPhone, typing out a message to subscribers who inhabit the quantum universe of blogs, URLs and spheres.

For those who still commune by glance and gesture, "to twitter" roughly means to express an abbreviated thought or observation in real time to a live, self-selecting audience of brain voyeurs. People who want to know your every cogitation and sign up for the privilege.

Shorter than a blog posting, a "tweet" consists of a concise sentence or two and essentially answers the question: What are you doing?

Often, the answer is not riveting, as in: "Getting ready for work." Other times, as in the recent election, twitterers have been put to constructive use, such as reporting possible poll shenanigans.

Under ideal circumstances, a tweet would offer something insightful -- or newsy, such as: "Rahm Emanuel just walked in."

As, in fact, he did the evening of my twit-initiation. Instantly, my friend's twitterees -- all 5,000 of them -- knew what she knew and were, for what it was worth, As Good As There.

In the Information Age: Knowing equals Being.

Twittering isn't entirely new, of course. The Facebook generation has been sorta twittering for years, posting prosaic bulletins about their whims and whereabouts, thus providing a glimpse of what the world would be like if hummingbirds could type:

"Jordan is busy busy!"

"Josh is driving to the mountains today."

"Kate is sooooooooo never drinking martinis again."

On Planet Facebook, nothing in one's life is not worth mentioning. To what end, one can only surmise. I am, therefore I am, therefore I am. But what are friends for, if not to feign interest in what's not the least bit interesting?

Serious twitter subscribers expect more than a mood update, I'm told, and presumably won't stick around long for less. Or will they? I recently went to Twitter.com and created my own account. Nary a tweet have I posted thus far, yet already I have a dozen or so subscribers.

Who are they? How long will they wait? Why do they wait? Will they spurn me if I fail to twitter? Would a banter suffice? In the spirit of gamesmanship, herewith a tweet:

"James Dobson's letter-writing campaign to set me straight re God and GOP appears to be backfiring. Most e-mails from his Web site the past two days disagree with Dobson."

As my son would say, "Baaam!"

Truth be known, I confess to a certain, inexplicable calm. Gratification, if you will. Shoulders relaxing. Perhaps, just perhaps, there is something to this twittering business.

One's every-other-thought couldn't be considered compelling, surely. But there may be merit to this yet-new thing. Wouldn't we be interested in, say, Ahmadinejad's twitterings? Barack Obama's? Sarah Palin's?

Come to think of it, how long before we begin to expect, if not demand, that public officials twitter? Already, blogging is de rigueur for anyone seeking a wide audience or market share. Nearly every newspaper Web site now offers multiple, topic-specific blogs to which reporters, editors and columnists are expected to post.

The Obama campaign revolutionized political communication and fundraising. Fireside chats and radio addresses may nurture our nostalgia, but blogs and twitters feed our need for speed. They also give an impression of human contact without the muss and fuss of actual intimacy.

For serious twitterers, there is additionally a commercial aspect. Building one's base, so to speak, eventually leads to possible marketing opportunities. When one has a million subscribers to one's thoughts, then one may have a salable asset. A penny for your thoughts potentially becomes legal tender.

What all this means in the long term is anyone's guess. How much information can a brain usefully process? What end is served by the random tweets of countless individuals? The impulse to stay incessantly in touch can be viewed either as gregarious or as a sign of consuming anxiety. Twittering may be the opiate of the obsessively-compulsively disordered.

Who needs the couch, after all, when no thought is ever repressed?

Something to consider. Or, perchance, to tweet?

Well,
My sobriety date is May 20, 2003.

There now, I feel sooooooo much better!

Time to Step Aside
Ms Parker:

I honestly do believe that it would be better if you would graciously step aside. Are you sure you are okay? Something is not right.

I agree!
It's time to go, Kathleen -- sadly, because I used to love your writing. What is with this self-destructive path you are taking? Have you decided this is the only way to fame and fortune? Is this really better than integrity and wisdom?

It's comfirmed!
Kathleen Parker is cracking up! She's a phony who can't take the heat for her idiotic rants, and this latest piece of trash she has written proves it. Time to go away!

KATHLEEN IS A LIBERAL TWIT !!!!!!!!

Its no wonder she is impressed by other Liberal Twits....who cherish the most important things
in their lives??? So, what could that be?....

I was wondering when she and the other twits like Rick Sanchez and Campbell Brown of CNN would finally come to agreement on a site they could all feel at home on...hence the site....TWITTER.COM...LOL :o)

THE DOUBLE STANDARD OF LIBERAL TWITS??

"Our coins bear the words 'In God We Trust'. We take the oath of office asking His help in keeping that oath. And we proclaim that we are a nation under God when we pledge allegiance to the flag. But we can't mention His name in a public school or even sing religious hymns that are nondenominational. Christmas can be celebrated in the school room with pine trees, tinsel and reindeers, but there must be no mention of the man whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer if a student asked why it was called Christmas."

Already "...a dozen or so subscribers."
By god, I think that is the whole Twitter.Com site!

Manuel, you have it backward!
She is not depressed nor does she suffer from the other maladies you list. In fact, I think she is overly infatuated with herself. I've been a fan of Ms Parker's for a long time, but I'm beginning to feel like a fool.

Her inner narcicism is bubbling to the surface and she is unable to contain it. She twitters not communicate but to feed her inflated ego.

Ms. Parker, in all seriousness, please don't forego the couch. For some it is an absolute necessity.

Some of you people are just...something
@Manual : Flagged you as offensive. And you are. That was unwarranted, inaccurate, and crass. Your post reads like you're a mole from MoveOn and DailyKos--but without the large vocabulary.

Meanwhile: am I catching a hint of intolerance here? "What? SHE DOESN'T LIKE SARAH PALIN???"

Is she required to? Is conservatism an exercise in group-think? I thought that was the province of Socialists and Democrats. Wise up, people!

As for Twitter, well, it starts with the word "twit," and that ought be be clue enough. Twitter users exercise the kind of egomania that believes people who don't know you are inexplicably interested in what you ate for breakfast. It's nothing but personal vanity, and personal vanity is no darned good for anything. KP isn't the first person to trash Twitter, and she won't be the last.

I've been reading KP for years, long before she came onboard TownHall. I don't agree with her assessment of Sarah Palin, but there's no rule that says we have to agree about everything. KP writes her opinion. I compare it to mine. Where they match, I'm happy. Where they don't, I have to think about those differences and decide whether my opinion reflects a correct view of reality. Notice that I go ahead and THINK. I don't Tweet, I THINK.

Do you folks, calling for KP's ouster from TH, think? Me wonders. Me really, really wonders.

"Ale, man, ale's the stuff to drink, for fellows whom it hurts to think...." -- A. E. Housman, A Shropshire Lad LXII.

I do not tweet, twit or tritter
And I must have missed what most are reacting to. But as for the obsessive desire to exchange banalities, is this not what the bulk of human conversation been about. 99% of the people living in small villages across the globe, spend the bulk of their words exchanging pleasantries with their family, friends, and neighbors. Apparently, twittering is just the ability to do the same in a more scattered and hurried culture. I join many in wondering what harmful effect may come from the omnipresence of entertainment in our age, but twittering does not seem to be the problem. The ability to do via electronics what humans do all the time anyway is not the problem, and may be one of the saving graces of cell phone technology. If I had any friends with time on their hands, I would probably learn to twitter myself.

my 2 cents
K - You ROCK, girl.

IGNORE these grumps because you have already figured out that we are NOT gonna make it through the next umpteen or so years without a sense of humor, so you are waaaay ahead of them.

As for me - you STILL owe me a Geraldo column, and you have been promising that for 7 years ever since the first one, which was AWESOME!

How long must I wait?

p.s. - enjoyed your gig on EWTN

rinzai, it's kinda funny, doncha ....
think that you would chastise those here for not allowing individual thought, and then turn around and flag Manuel for being offensive? What, you have a problem with someones personal opinion?

Like yourself, I've read, and been a fan of Ms Parker long before I found TH. I appreciate her position in support of American men and boys, especially WRT how young males are given the shaft in today's public indoctrination centers (read "schools").

However, in the last few months I have seen her not just express a difference of opinion. She has proceeded to diss and disparage much of what I hold dear. I'm a big boy and I can handle differing opinions. But I will not stand by without comment, when, in my opinion, she goes too far.

You don't have to agree with me or anyone else here. But try not to get your panties in a wad, and flag as offensive, when someone expresses a differing opinion. Lest you be accused of censorship.

KP- Just Twitter Away
Considering you recent ridiculous columns, this one is, at least, banal; however, devoting a whole column to Twitter is inane. In fact, your columns are like a Bonfire of the Inanities.

Actually, I was surprised that you are STILL here. Obviously, you have not received the Memo from most of us. You aren't a Conservative, much less, a Republican.

Please just leave because we don't want your Kook-Aid, thank you very much. What we do want is for you to just leave as your Kook-Aid and 'shrooms are wearing thin. What you need to do is to be the diversity writer for the DailyKooks and the PuffHos.

'nough already. Just leave as you are no longer welcome here.

Writing
Email created an opportunity for aspiring writers to practice; Twitter creates an opportunity for practicing narcissists to aspire.

With so many major issues ...
... to debate and discuss, why did the editors at TH allow this mindless rambling to be published?

IT IS GOOD
to see the comments are so few and seem to be dropping for this idiot's "work". TH needs to send her elsewhere. Her shelf life here is expired...

Is Kathleen a Twittermatrix?
It's a shame she doesn't give her Twitter name.

Kathleen Parker = David Brock
That about sums it up.

I have nothing to say, BUT...
...I'm going to say it, anyway.

We've gone through a year of it because of the election. The reporting on Obama was much like a marathon of old "I've Got a Secret" game shows from way back when.

The election is over. NOW (and only now) do we hear or read about the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 signed into law by Carter, then beefed up by Clinton in both terms. This is where Fannie/Freddie was born.

Who is responsible for this? The republicans, of course! Thirty years after the fact. Some kid is walking into a McDonalds. His/her vapid friends know this. Couldn't name the new vice-prez, but there's only so much info one can retain. Big Mac or Chicken McNuggets? Fries with that?

Nobody may know (or be able to find) the news, but they can, with a bit of effort, know every store that some friend walks in.

If someone talking on a cell phone runs into your car and kills your wife, can you beat this idiot to death with a tire iron? If not, why not?

Elvis Costello got it right back in the 70s with his song "Waiting for the End of the World."

Yeah, some kid (or mother) will have fries with that. How tedious the wait.

Kathleen
"Twittering?" Sort of like your columns?

Kathleen Parker NEVER disappoints
Her columns are EXCELLENT Bird Cage Liners.

Speaking of twittering....
I wish Parker would fly away.

Rinzai: Dysfunctional Reader
I wonder what part of my comment hit Rinzai really hard?…Based on her scribble, I can assure that it has to do with the sexual thing. This is the problem with readers like Rinzai; they allow their hormones to control their emotions. By doing that, Rinzai loses track of the main issue and focuses on the wrong issue. I call it the “dysfunctional reader.”
Incapable to elaborate a sound argument, she does what her friends, the intolerant left does, censor the opponent.
By the way my name is Manuel, not Manual

So did the TP in NOLA, but after a year of hearing about The Messiah, without one story negative story, I dropped my subscription 5 minutes after their big endorsement. Of course, they continue to call, which at one time would have annoyed me, but, now, I get to tell them that I am keeping a call history to turn over to the FCC for "Do Not Call" violations and I love that radicals are so now en vogue because the words just spew out of me concerning where they can shove their newspaper. For a law-abiding citizen, I never knew how much fun it is to be a radical.

So, my suggestion to you is cancel your subscription and save your money during these troubling days.

I see, Kathy belongs to the

KP & Ishtar
KP, your columns are as great as the film Ishtar...

You both bomb.

Boycott Parker
Do not read her drivel.

Denise
My newspaper, actually is conservative editorially. When that changes,I will cancel immediately.

Most of the op-ed page is conservative, but they do carry Eugene Robinson,a loon, also. I justdon't read that.

They also have AP stories and we know what they are. I suppose I do take it for the local news, obits and crossword puzzle. I could read it on-line,though.

Parker Haters
Are twittering with hate at her every word. How very conservative christian of you!

TRAITOR...Need not apply
Parker get out of here !!! This is not liberal site

The last ditch effort of a twit...
is to stop writing offensive stuff and start writing mindlessly boring stuff. I seriously can't imagine an adult person putting this much thought into a column about "twittering". It's a good thing there's nothing actually happening in the world.

Pathetic
This passes for legititmate social/political commentary? Does TownHall pay for this inane drivel?

Parker the Phathetic
Absolutely mindless drivel.

WHY IN HELL does Town Hall allow her to use its blog to spew her nonsense?

I voted and left
Not worth reading Parker- move on

What In the World is this Drivel?
Sheesh. What in the world is the point of this article? I have had more stimulating conversations on the elevator. With all that is going on in the world, this is her commentary? This is what is in her mind? This is the best that she is capable of? This is one of the WORST articles I have read in years. Reading this article was like reading and talking in a chat room. I get much more interesting and lively discussion and analysis there. I hope TownHall has enough sense to can her and REPLACE HER WITH A CONSERVATIVE WRITER WHO CAN ACTUALLY WRITE!!!!!!!!!!!

She Must Have Liked the Title
The only thing I can figure is that she made up the title and thought it was oh-so-clever, which it isn't and then tried to write a story about it.
Hey Kathleen. Your title, not clever. Lame in fact.
Now here is a clever title by the Queen of ascerbic wit, Ann Coulter:

The Reign of Lame Falls Mainly on McCain! Now that is great!

What a stupid nonsensical
column. Yeah I tried twitter and it is more of a bunch of people who like to hear themselves talk.

Grow up and realize that information is not knowledge.

WTF?
What in the world was this all about? What a nonsensical column.

Still, she has to find a way to dig against God and Christians, even when writing this banal and useless garbage.

Suggestion for all KP readers
This is for those that can no longer tolerate the inane drivel of KP.

I know that we all love hitting the KP pinata, but we can find other sources of fun.

KP, probably, gets paid by the hits (even the hit jobs) so we should just ignore her. If she has to rely on her few supporters, I say fine.

KP, I have two poster boards and some string. It will help you out when you have to stand on a corner with a sign saying... "Will Write Drivel For Food and a Manicure."

Ditch the B#%ch
Another week and Parker is still here. Won't read her junk, but she's worth a "1".

I see Saxby Chambliss ignored Parker's advice and had Toxic Sarah Palin as his campaign's closer. Chambliss paid dearly for his mistake - he only won by 15% rather than the projected 3% - 5%.

rinzai
Meanwhile: am I catching a hint of intolerance here? "What? SHE DOESN'T LIKE SARAH PALIN???"

of course she didnt have to like sarah palin. but she should have kept that an unexpressed opinion, for several reasons. the recent presidential election was about the survival of our country. survival lost. obama may not be nearly as bad as we expected, but he will still be in power during the time that our nations decline becomes irreversible. mccain would have been a terrible president, but possibly some very strong opposition from his own party might have swayed him to hold up on the irrevocable destruction of our country by illegal immigration. with obama, we have no chance. kp's crime was aiding and abetting the destruction of our country by helping the worst candidate win. her opinion of palin was otherwise irrelevant, she wasnt running for president, and if mccain died, any random non-liberal, including sarah, would have been better than mccain, obama, or biden.

twittering
just a bunch of crickets drooling out drivvvell

not the first
i only read kp's drivel because it is not the first townhall column about twitter, and i wanted to see if the second was as banal as the first. it was, and more. since kp doesnt seem to have a clue why she should have not written her negative opinion about sarah palin, i will attempt to explain it to her. it is called giving aid and comfort to the enemy. she was in the same position as the traitors who aired the abu ghraib "torture" story, as well as the traitors who publicized the water board "torture" issue. you dont have to be for torture to recognize that you give aid and comfort to the enemy by airing such matters, and in my opinion the perpetrators should have been executed. they blabbed, and boys died on account of their verbal incontinence. kp's treachery was similar, and she should be dismissed from townhall for aiding and abetting the destruction of our country.

Thank You!!!
"I see Saxby Chambliss ignored Parker's advice and had Toxic Sarah Palin as his campaign's closer. Chambliss paid dearly for his mistake - he only won by 15% rather than the projected 3% - 5%."

Exactly.

Palin aside, I'm finding Parker to be less and less relevant these days. This column is no exception..."holier than thou" tone, all over the place, poor attempts at humor...how does she continue to be featured?

Do the TH rating votes mean anything ?
KP's columns have been rated poor for weeks. The majority of comments have been critical. Why is KP still here?

Fouled the nest
Kathleen
You messed up. By turning on your base readership you fouled the nest.
Even animals don’t foul their nest, they know better.
Can’t you see by all the negative response to your positions that the people you’re writing for don’t agree with you. Your job as a writer is to reinforce their political positions in a well thought-out informative way.
But it looks like you have the same hard head mindset of the Dixie-Chicks… ridicule the values of the people they depend on to buy their product, and then can’t understand or care when ticket sales of their concerts and albums go down.

Twit for Tat
Unlike Ms. Parker, since I am capable of a rational thought, suppose we disect what you said. THen I wil measure to other examples.

You said
“To what end, one can only surmise. I am, therefore I am, therefore I am.”

I get it like “I am, therefore I twit”. That’s sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard.

“We are sitting at a restaurant counter, sipping wine and chatting, when my friend begins twittering.
Not in the usual way. Two women twittering turn no heads. Rather, she is "twittering" via her iPhone, “

Kathleen, would you find that as rude as say “ignoring” someone? I wonder what Emily Post would say on twittering. Like are there any guidelines? Or like "do not ignore a person sitting one on one with you having dinner." I mean the idea seems to be no rules apply. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Sounds like
Teen aged narcissistic drivel. Please grow up.

What Does Dobson Have to Do WIth THis?
What does Dr. Dobson have to do with any of this conversation/article. It sounds like it was forced into the article in one of her bitter moments to slam the right. Sheesh. Sarah,
Did you just start reading KP?

Most of us do not want to read her drivel and it has little to do with Palin.

Not just for "banalities"
Posting this in case somebody is interested in actual information and not just critizicing Ms Parker. A LOT of people are using Twitter, and not all of them are narcsissists. If you'd like to read a little more about how people are using Twitter, here are a couple of links:

CNN that covers the use of Twitter in Mumbai (http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/11/27/mumbai.twitter/)

A web developer used Twitter as a help center during the San Diego fires.

Student 'Twitters' his way out of Egyptian jail(http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TECH/04/25/twitter.buck/)

Twitter and the China earthquake
(http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/technology/2008/05/twitter_and_the_china_earthqua.html)

Thanks for keeping an open mind.

I do have a tiny bit of bashing to do myself, though. Ms Parker, your tweet on Dobson was 169 characters long... 140 is the limit, so I suggest the following substitute: "Dobson’s campaign to set me straight re God/GOP may be backfiring. Most e-mails from his Web site the past 2 days disagree with him."

Twits are People Too.
Parker is a moron. However, it became very evident during the election. She even wrote an ignorant, distasteful article that McCain picked Palin due to some unrequited sexual attraction, etc. Very rude and just more of her salacious innuendo.
So, no, it wasn't one Palin column that most of us disagreed with. It is her, her viewpoints and the slams and idiocy of her writings. She is here to write CONSERVATIVE COMMENTARY. Not sure how talking about "twittering" has a darn thing to do with conservatism. Nor do any of her whiny articles after she was criticized for her Palin article. She has shown her true self. And, nobody likes it. But, I here the Dixie Chicks are looking for some help!

Tit for Tat
I think Daily Kos has an opening for a twittering nitwit.

Suggestion for all KP readers, again
This is for those that can no longer tolerate the inane drivel of KP.

I know that we all love hitting the KP pinata, but we can find other sources of fun.

KP, probably, gets paid by the hits (even the hit jobs) so we should just ignore her. If she has to rely on her few supporters, I say fine.

KP, I have two poster boards and some string. It will help you out when you have to stand on a corner with a sign saying... "Will Write Drivel For Food and a Manicure."

Parker is an Embarrassment
In the furor over Kathleen Parker's asinine opinions on Sarah Palin and religious conservatives, a simple and obvious fact had been overlooked: she is a terrible writer. Her prose is child-like, her thoughts banal, and her self-pity nauseating. I would suggest that she devote ALL of her future columns to her hate mail; I wouldn't be surprised if the bulk of it is more competently written than KP's scribblings.

Can we ask that Parker resign?
--Or how about impeach. Let's read the charges and put the matter to a vote.

Does Parker go or does she stay?

Denise -- I think you are wrong
KP has dissed her base. She will try to get it back but in doing so she will diss her newfound friends of the left.

KP has made a career ending mistake. We need to hold her accountable.

Keep up the heat. Make sure KP’s career is over.

This column
isn't worth wiping my butt with. Katty needs to quit and see a psychiatrist to increase her dosage of Zoloft.
