Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"Bring em' on" vs. "Do Tell"

With the nomination of one Sarah Palin, presidential politics is no longer a battle of economic policies and national security; it's a Saturday night brawl between the Rednecks and the Elites.

On the left, we have the smugly smiling, smarter-than-thou, Ivy Leaguers. On the right, we have the gun-clinging, God-toting, cowboys.

Make that cowgirls.

The two parties are both more and less than that reduction, of course, but this is approximately how each side now views the other.

Barack Obama is an elitist who doesn't understand small-town, traditional America no matter how many times he cites his Kansas roots. And John McCain is, well, who knows?

McCain isn't a redneck, but his running mate meets most of the criteria from the elitist's perspective. She hunts, fishes, loves driving four-wheelers, making babies and beating up the boys.

She gets small-town America because she is small-town America. The question is, does she get the Great Big World? And can she lead it, if necessary?

McCain seems to think so. Or does he? Whatever the case, his political judgment in selecting the Alaska governor was keen. With that singular flourish, he signaled the Republican base that he isn't a RINO (Republican In Name Only) after all. And, he co-opted the Democrats' claim to represent women's interests by picking a woman who makes feminists look like sissy-girls.

Both a frontier woman and beauty queen, the square-jawed Palin not only neutralized the sisterhood, but she animated the brotherhood. Men are suddenly riveted as never before by the frontal lobes of the vice presidential candidates.

Like all caricatures, the elitist and the redneck are based on partial truths, but there's enough substance to justify some of the contempt from both sides. Obama does have that little chin-lifted, smile-down-his-nose, teacher-pet look that says, "I know better than you." Palin does exude the kind of biblical certitude last observed in a president by the name of George W. Bush.

It was Obama who said that small-town Americans, embittered by a lack of jobs and government accountability, "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

A big game hunter like Palin couldn't ask for better ammo. She knows that her neighbors don't cling to guns or religion because there's nothing left on which to hang their hopes. They cling to guns to hunt and to protect their families; and they cling to religion because they believe in a power higher than themselves.

It was also Obama who, in trying to commiserate with Iowa farmers about low crop prices, said: "Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?"

I confess to arugula fatigue at this point. Arugula may be a funny name for lettuce. (Hey, Solzhenitsyn was a funny name for a writer!) But arugula has been on American plates for a couple of decades now. It isn't the symbol of nouvelle cuisine that it once was.

That said, Obama's lament before a crowd of soy and corn growers was so out of tune, he made Hillary Clinton sound like Sarah Brightman.

To sway voters, it isn't necessary to agree on every issue, but it is helpful to share a worldview. From that perspective, Palin is a perfect storm of God, Mom and apple pie: a pro-life, pro-gun, career woman, happily married to a snowmobiling -- not a windsurfing -- guy.

Jeff Foxworthy is undoubtedly revising his blockbuster book: "You Might Be a Redneck if ..." to include a chapter on Palin. Note that being a redneck is not considered a negative in the Foxworthy franchise, nor is it in most places where elites fear to tread.

On the other hand, another confession: Palin is so comfortable in that whompum-stompum, good ol' girl way that one really wouldn't mind catching her doodling in her journal, "Madame Bovary, c'est moi."

The truth is that both elites and rednecks could use a little more of each other. If some rednecks are a little too proud of selective ignorance, elites are too confident that rednecks know nothing useful. A little less smugness on the left and little less righteousness on the right would be refreshing about now.

Breath-holding and farm-betting are not recommended.

RINOs
Parker says McCain's "political judgment in selecting the Alaska governor was keen."

Very true.

Parler continues "With that singular flourish, he signaled the Republican base that he isn't a RINO (Republican In Name Only) after all."

Sorry - not buying it. I wish Palin was heading the ticket - I would love to vote for her for POTUS. Maybe I will be able to do so one day.

But McCain's selection of Palin is a signal that he knows he needs real Republicans (or conservatives, anyway) on his side to win, not that he is one.

I still don't think I can vote for McCain. The really big thing for me is McCain-Feingold and his continued lack of apology for it - it shows his complete disregard for the kind of freedom / government non-intervention on which this country was founded.

The other big issues - amnesty, failure to support Bush's tax cuts, falling for AGW - could be forgivable by themselves.

But as long as he is unrepentant on campaign finance, McCain is not acceptable. I'm sick and tired of voting for unacceptable candidates as "the lesser of two evils."

But hey - now that Palin is on the ticket, McCain doesn't need my vote in Alabama anyway, so what does it matter...

If you think your vote doesn't matter...
Chris, this election isn't only about the Presidency, its about the Supreme Court nominees, about the Senate having a majority of conservatives, the House having a majority of conservatives, all the way down to the State level House and Senate. Even here in Texas the down ballot local judges and sheriff's races are in contest to be taken over by the liberals. Not the Democrats...but the liberals. If the President does not have the majority in the Senate, then he will get nothing done, it'll be another stalemate. I implore you to vote for McCain, for you will never agree 100% with one candidate. Its the philosophy this time...and what is right for the whole country, and we cannot afford what Barack Obama has in store for this country, especially if he has a Democrat ruled Senate & House! Your vote will always count more than you realize!

If you want Sarah...
...You've got to vote for McCain. I respect him and his service deeply, but I disagree with his solutions.

I'm with Chris, McCain-Feingold was the unpardonable sin (in the parlance of we who cling bitterly to religion). It was a full frontal assault on the first Amendment of the US Constitution. That document that the conservative party is supposed to hold dearest of all.

If the intent behind McCain-Feingold was to reduce corruption in Washington, John McCain should be put in the penalty box for his lack of understanding about simple economics and human nature.

The power of the government to redistribute wealth is the source of corruption in Washington. The various special interest groups assemble on K Street, then line up to bid for a place at the trough.

They invest in the form of bribes, kickbacks, favors, jobs, trips, gifts etc... While their Return on said investment is the annuity of taxpayer dollars that goes to subsidize business interests and lifestyles.

This is, at its simplest, the source of all corruption in Washington. Wanna get rid of corruption?...Get rid of wealth redistribution.

common sense
Small town folk are always in tune to someone who looks down their nose at them.
It's called common sense. Rarely seen in the Ivory Towers of learning....and at a distinct premium in the halls of Congress.
My money is on the small town folk, not the Harvard bree and cheese groupies.
What fun!!!

It is your right not to vote,
but it is laughable that you think McCain isn't regretful about his role with the incumbent's bill of rights (McCain/Feingold), especially when the Obamanation backed out of voting for it after saying he would, then backed out of using public financing after agreeing to do so. Talk about coming back to bite you in the backside.....

Bad advice
Right now both need to present their best case. Then we can vote and go back to living in purple America. Is arugula purple? I live in a very sophisticated market but am unaware of it.

Not quite on board with you, Ms. Parker
I loved the "frontal lobe" comment - very wry, and it evoked a chuckle.

But you being a Washington journalist/pundit, I think you might not quite get it just yet. It shows in this article in the attempt to define the sides into 'simpleton' terms. (I know, you get it, and we don't. So you'll explain it for us, right?)

While most of us recognize the MSM, Obama, Ivy League elist leanings, defining Ms. Palin as simply a glorified female version of George Bush (redneck) is completely missing the point.

She's not redneck. No really, she's normal. She's not just smalltown, she's everytown. She's surburban mom/dad/family. She might shoot guns and hunt and fish, but so what?

She's also a Governor, a professional, and very sharp. And she cooks burgers and takes out the trash and braids hair. And damn if she isn't happy.

And despite your assertions about Arugula, it may have been common cuisine on Washington, D.C. plates for 2 decades, I'd never heard of it before last year. I'm willing to bet most Americans, not just small-towners, haven't either. Lettuce is just lettuce to us.

liberals taking over
at 1:21 Susan encouraged me to vote for McCain.

The SCOTUS is a non-reason to vote for McCain. He will not be able to get anyone better than Kennedy past the Senate. Remember that 7 of the 9 current SCOTUS judges were nominated by Republicans - but only 4 are reliably conservative. I don't trust McCain to nominate the kind of judge that would overturn his campaign finance monstrosity - but that is exactly the kind of SCOTUS judge we need. I'm just thankful that the 4 reliable conservatives are the young side of the court.

For what it's worth, I will be voting to re-elect my senator - Jeff Sessions - even though he's a big spender (voted for the farm bill and other budget-busters). It irritates me that even the most conservative Republicans such as Sessions keep spending like crazy. But allowing the Dems to take 60 seats - a filibuster-proof majority - would truly be a disaster.

Susan writes that many seats are being "taken over by the liberals. Not the Democrats...but the liberals."

Right. McCain is a liberal - not a Democrat, but a liberal.

Now, I appreciate his conservative stand against spending (unlike Sessions, for example), but he's got too many liberal positions and votes to be acceptable. Many of his current conservative positions (domestic drilling, taxes, immigration) conflict with his recent voting record.

Susan writes: "If the President does not have the majority in the Senate, then he will get nothing done, it'll be another stalemate."

Federal Stalemate is a good thing. Remember that the GOP did a very good job limiting the growth of government when opposing Bill Clinton, but completely fell down on that job under the "compassionate conservative" Bush.

I will be voting for POTUS - but for a limited-government third party. It will either be Bob Barr of the Libertarians or Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party.

REDNECKS
Sarah is the one !! If she is considered a redneck then that is a complinent from small town america. You dhimmicrats can't hold a candle to her and McCain.Sarah will be president in our future and thats for sure.I think that sarah should put all of you liberals, dhimmis, democrats and small town american family bashing evil bastards on an iceburg and push you all towards the equator.Don;t you know that she is a true patriot and she is truely the one that we have been waiting for and not that anti american freedom hating bonehead obamma (did i spell that wrong ? )to bad. WE LOVE YOU SARAH AND ALL THAT YOU STAND FOR,GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY,THANK YOU FOR RUNNING FOR VP,WE NEED YOU AND WE WANT YOU.

THE COMING OBAMA MELTDOWN! !
It's all over for this poseur, charlaton and deluded American Idol...the greatest fraud in American Political History...he's amazingly thin skinned and bitchy and cann't take a punch!
This is what comes from AFFIRMATIVE ACTION !
Obama will be destroyed in a Dukakis like LANDSLIDE...15 STATES OR less!!

We need the Sarah Change
Say potbelly I take it your not one of the elite. You should sleep off
those beers before going public. You're last line should be
buurrrrrrrrp!

Question: What do the rednecks and the elites have in common?

The need for a good caning. One to learn respect, and one to learn humility. Yeah, I'm mean, but we need it. I dislike the crude morons and the whining wimpos that reign in our society.
Sarah represents a God influence, integrity, and convictions, faith, core beliefs, facts and truth, kindness, goodness righteousness, and honor. American flag and apple pie. The CHANGE all of us true Americans need for the redemption of our souls and the health of our nation. She should
represent us, that means we are to be like her in our character.
She's not perfect but she needs to rub off on BOTH parties, the
sooner she starts up housekeeping in the White House the better. She is tall beautiful Sarah Snow-white beckoning the 700 political
dwarfs to come clean up. There are a lot of Grumpies that are
going to really squeal when reformer Sarah gets ahold of them.
Their character should be our concern, if it's not, we the people are
lacking in character and deserve what our stupidity gives us in leaders. It's really that simple.

I pick the fox hole candidate
In grade school we did values clarification exercises that included prioritizing each person's practical greater-good value in a shipwreck situation. The builders, hunters, doctors, etc... always made the cut. The poets, actors, lawyers, were gleefully left adrift because whithout a society made for them by people with more pragmatic skills, they became useless bread eaters. Where Sarah Palin is concerned- I'd want her to have my back in a dangerous situation because she's versatile and pragmatic. Obama and Biden are not the types to have your back- they are beholden to an ideology that maintains there are no backs to have.

You might be a redneck if
you never eat things you cannot pronounce. We just have lettuce around here and only the Yupscale shop at Whole Foods anyway because we need our money to support our families.

The only reason I need to vote McCain/Palin is that mainstream Canada hates them and worships and adores Obama. Anybody the Canadians hate (they last went for Al Gore, Prime Minister and all) is right for America.

That, and the increasing rumble that if Obama does not win, race riots will erupt all over America. Yep,that is what we rednecks call Post Racial Behaviour. If you are a Black person please try to convince your brothers and sisters that race riots are a lot like the sixteen year old throwing a shrieking tantrum to prove she is mature enough to stay out past midnight.

REDNECK PRIDE
Ms. Parker: you certainly succeeded in coming across as an elitist yourself. -
'Palin is so comfortable in that whompum-stompum, good ol' girl way that one really wouldn't mind catching her doodling in her journal, "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." ' -

We rednecks don't know whom Madame Bovary is and most of us do not speak French. You must explain the reference if you want us to improve ourselves. Palin is comfortable in her own skin (whompum stompum good ole girl): so what? At least that's the way she comes across to moi, a certified A#1 redneck.

"The truth is that both elites and rednecks could use a little more of each other. If some rednecks are a little too proud of selective ignorance, elites are too confident that rednecks know nothing useful. A little less smugness on the left and little less righteousness on the right would be refreshing about now."

Rednecks are not too proud or righteous (as I understand the way you use the term). You reveal your elitism by condescending to inform us that we need to improve ourselves, and allege that our ignorance is selective. Hmmm, are you a trained psychologist capable of evaluating all rednecks indirectly based on impressions gained via ... what, watching re-runs of He Haw?

What you mistakenly interpret as pride, righteousness, and selective ignorance is actually the fact that we are comfortable with ourselves the way we are and the fact that we are not going to change to suit other people. The more elitists, like you, tell us we need to change and give up our guns, GOD, 'rustic ways' etc, the more we dig in our heels and tell them to buzz off and mind their own business. We aren't harming anyone. This is America and we have a right to pursue happiness as we define happiness.

Next time you want to write a column regarding rednecks, don't. Go read Madame Bovary instead.

Rednecks & Elite
Funny how things change.
Being on the old side I can remember when the Democrats were the everyday people and the Republicans were the Elite!
Me - I'll take a redneck to have common sense before an over-educated fool. Fool who believes what college professors, who have never worked a day in the real world, teach.
Palin is the driver for me to vote Republican.
I don't care for McCain. The McCain of the
McCain/Feingold bill and McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill. Just maybe she'll become President and straighten things out.

Bone Head Obama
Robert in CA has it right
You can take the boy out of the Ghetto but you can't take the Ghetto out of the boy.
I'd rather put lipstick on a pit bull. Sarah will pull this one out. I am a 70 year old Redneck woman from Georgia and I am here to tell you that one day Sarah will be the President. John McCain knew how to get to Obuma. If Obuma had taken Hillary for his VP, we wouldn't even be having this conversation now. He S--- in his hat. My whole family is for McCain. He has showed real enthusiam with this race now. He was dead in the water before he made this decision. You GO John!!!!!!!
Pat in Georgia

The elites are not very sophisticated
The liberal elites are much less sophisticated than they think they are. Here's why:

1. They have never understood the Reagan Democrats.
2. There are lots of things going on in Europe that they don't know about, because it's not covered in the media they get their news from.
3. The media they get their news from consists of the NY Times, The Nation, and NPR. These are all American media, which means that they get all their foreign news from other Americans.
4. Instead of seeing the rest of the world the way it actually is, they see it through the lens of American wrongdoing. If a conflict elsewhere doesn't involve us, they generally don't know about it, and if they do, they can't think of what to say about it, until someone explains why "it's all America's fault."

Here's a typical example of their lack of sophistication. In 2003 when the movie "Bend It Like Beckham" came to America, the NY Times movie reviewer had never heard of David Beckham, despite the fact that he had been well-known outside of the U.S. for several years at that point and despite the fact that he was married to a well-known pop star.

By the way, since Madame Bovary committed suicide, I sure hope Sarah Palin doesn't identify with her.

Chris ....
go ahead and throw your vote away and then keep your mouth shut - no complaining allowed.

I look at Sarah and I see me, my sisters, my sisters-in-laws, my friends, my garden club members, my church members. YUP, REAL women are going to vote for Sarah when they made not have voted for McCain - REAL AMERICAN WOMEN are going to put Palin/McCain in the White House!!!!

chris

and your non vote?

If there are enough non voters and voters from the dead to get Obama elected, what have you accomplished. A more liberal SCOTUS.

Sorry, Robert
Had to flag you on that one.

I might have even used the same language, 20 years ago, but the longer I live, the less I'm like my dad - an ignorant bigot, sad to say.

Obama bin Biden doesn't sell out in flyover country for the simple reasons Kathleen Parker states. The fact that Barry Apollo is 50% Caucasian, 40% Arab, and 10% Negro gives him a lot of the "white guilt" vote, but his politics are just as left, and offensive, to us as Kerry's, Algore's, Dukakis, Mondale, or Carter.

A young black man I work with remarked to me the other day that had one of Obama's daughters gotten pregnant, we would never hear the end of it.

I pointed out to him that since BO has already stated that he wouldn't "punish his daughters with a BABY," no one ever know about the pregnancy because he and Michele would have whisked her off to an abortion mill.

My fellow employee is a good and decent Christian, but I can tell he is still vacillating between voting for the so-called black man, or a party he and his family and community have NEVER voted for in two of his lifetimes.

Joe Blow and BO will continue to spew offensive and ignorant blather about us bitter clingers, because they and their advisers are patronizing snobs and now getting desperate.

Amen, Ron Jones...
You said it well, brother. Very nicely put.

McCain shows he still doesn't get it
with his comment about "reaching across the aisle."

His choice of Palin may have been inspired, but if he hasn't learned the lessons of the energized base by now, he never will.

The only thing he'll get when he extends his hand is to have it gnawed off by his enemies.

When will these hapless Republicans ever start acting like the understand that?

Since when...
... is Sarah Palin a "redneck"? Is this how we refer to people who get college degrees, stay married, hunt for recreation (and nutrition) and wear $300 glasses?

BTW, this election will be determined by TURNOUT. So all you folks who are determined (still) to "teach the Republican party a lesson" had better rethink your position about not voting. President Obama will translate to horribly naive foreign policy that will leave us and our allies at risk, and domestic economic policies that will tax us all out of our homes, cripple our existing businesses and thwart our ability to start new ones -- which, by the way, is the way most people in this country have left poverty behind.

It staggers me that so few seem to understand that.

Spot on Parker
Parker nailed this one. This election has boiled down to symbolism. The same kind of symbolism that drove the election of 2000. Do you want the smug wonky Al Gore or the good ol boy W. We went from who would you rather have a beer with to who eats Iceberg ve Arrugala and who is packing.

The problem is that none of this matter. What mattera are the things that get lost in all of this. Who is in the best position to get us out of the mess we are in. Who has the best strategy for winning the war on terror or steering us on the best economic future.

You really can't fault the politicians on this you have to fault a very stupid electorate that is more obsessed with symbols than with substance. I frankly find it scarey. I would have thought after the disaster that was the Bush Administration that people would have been looking for substance over style. Details on policy rather than myths. Troubling no matter who wins.

LAURA
I know you already know this, so I am just confirming that you are not alone in your thinking. Yes, to be like Sarah Palin is to be a redneck in the eyes of elitists. Education, marriage, recreational pursuits and fashion don't matter. It's thinking like them that makes one a non-redneck. Since we rednecks don't want to change or be told what to do and think by others, elitists like Ms. Paker call us too proud and righteous etc.

Thru and Thru
Amazing is the power of the myth. Take this frat boy from Yale, give him a Texas Twang, let him clear a little brush on a phoney ranch in a workshirt that still has the creases from the packaging and you eat it up. One of us. Then you get a Tax cut and regulations tailor made for the real base of the Republican Party Wall Street, which is anyone did not notice is in New York City.

It's the National Media, Stupid
This column has one major part missing. That would be the part about the liberal and conservative national media that sit on their high horses in major cities, but mostly NYC and DC for the presidential election coverage, who don't know squat about the people that Sarah Palin appeals to because they never talk to them when they're doing their news job. You media guys know who you are. You're the ones that drag along your NYC/DC news posses when you go to places like Iowa, Wyoming or West Virginia to explain why people in those places vote the way they do instead of you talking to editors, local station reporters and local officials in the small and medium sized towns that make up those states. You're the ones who don't know anything about an Alaska governor because the ones you talk to regularly are from NY and Virginia. In fact, the national media types are trying to make this a gender/race election because that's all they know and feel comfortable talking about. This Palin appeal is URBAN versus THE REST OF US. Listen to the TV news media fumble why she's apparently appealing to a lot of male voters according to polls. The national TV news dodos so don't get it that they are resorting to say, "She's hot." We get the national news from an urban viewpoint. We all know it and we're sick of it.

Don't Blame Parker
Don't blame Parker for the Redneck image. This is exactly what McCain was looking for someone who could make the hearts of conservatives go a flutter and at the same time exxagerate and play on the resentments of Small Town America.

Being one of us seems to be more important than working for us.

we've seen this before, kathleen
you're trying to stick the candidates in neat little boxes for us morons, right? You pay lip service by saying that "redneck" is a compliment in the trailer park society and you don't think we get the insult! I am now pointing my finger and you and yelling, "Elitist!"

And, no, arugula is NOT something the regular folks are buying...we got yer iceberg, red leaf and green leaf---the rest is weeds from the yard.

Palin
Palin is no Redneck. But her story appeals to rednecks and Parkers point is that this election is turning on resentments and moving away from policy. These are difficult times and we need a great leader not someone who makes us feel good or sticks it to the other side.

Troubling.

Arugula fatigue
If Sarah Palin were running for President, I would vote for her. I do not yet believe McCain understands the difference between honest immigrants and foreign criminals (or pawns). Yes, "They are people too.", criminal people! How many more can we afford to wharehouse in our prisons? On the other left: doesn't It just turn your stomach to hear one of the leftist elitists declare " What the American people really want",or "are really saying", or "really need is...."? It does mine!

Parker Trying to be Honest Broker
and it is failing. Parker conviently leaves out one major item: the MSM being an accomplice to the Palin smears. Most of the viscious smears on Palin orginated on the blogesphere (DailyKos being just one). That is nothing new; what is new is the fact that the New York Times, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ABC News, and the Atlantic took these little nuggests of slander (ie the story allegy that Bristol Palin was Trig's mother) without question and ran with them.

This is the Brave New World of journalism. No fact checking, no judgement. This abuse of the public trust just hit a new level. Parker reamins blissfully unaware of angry many people are, and if she keeps up this effort to be "Fair and Balanced" will eventually lose readers..

Elites vs Regular People
Having lived and educated in the Elite community, I chose a small town as my permanent home. Small towns are comprised of regular people who truly love their country and people. They solve problems within the community without demanding government meet all their needs. Regular people reach out to help each other. For the most part elites compete to be the richest, smartest, most powerful and will stab others in the back to succeed. Regular folks do not all have advanced degrees but have lots of common sense. Many of us do indeed have advanced degrees but find the phony sophistication mask of the elites to be something we want no part of. Elites make the mistake of thinking they only are bright and educated and small town folks are just dimwits. Elites do not understand us at all while we regular folks understand them quite well.

Sarah
What a lady. What a patriot. Athena, Diana, Aphrodite, Minerva, and Hera all in one. The anti-pelosi. The woman of the year. Let freedom ring, the let the white dove sing.

Murphdog,
I want to thank you for such a thoughtful and interesting comment. I think you did pick up the slight arrogance of the author and I agree with your comments. Arugala? Hell, I spent a couple of weeks in Terra Haute Indiana with an old friend this past summer and Pizza was still viewed as kind of exotic. I then of course returned to my very blue state of Maryland and sufferred through enduring our idiotic one party democratic state political discussion. We might know arugla but not much else.

Rednecks?
I don't know if my family and neighbors here in small-town Pennsylvania are rednecks, but we sure don't relate to a "community organizer" from Chicago who mocks our culture. We will all quietly vote for John McCain and surprise the pollsters when McCain carries Pennsylvania.

So Impeach
You seem to feel calling Palin a pig is ok, but just about everything about Obma is off limits. Can you imagine the uproar if Kenyan, Muslim jokes, or anything else about Obama became fodder for the name callers?
It was a very stupid remark politically, and once more shows how helpless he is without a script.

He-girls
"Feminists" is a misnomer. Hilary is as femine as Rosy O'Donnell.

Governor Palin is very feminine and makes the liberal "?ists" look like he-girls.

Laura Cap
Thanks for adding something to the conversation. I really enjoyed the insight you made about the urban bias of the media. I live about forty five miles from Washington,DC and the spin is so great here that you have to shake yourself every now and then to see clearly.

Impeach Bush
Palin denigrated Obama's claim that Community Organizer entitles him to be President. Wow, that's really heavy. I don't even think Clinton could have handled that below the belt insult.

Here is what Obama's Minions, who work for such eteemed media outlets, have said about Palin:

1)She had a steamy affair years ago
2)Her daughter is loose
3)Her daughter is the mother of Trig
4)Trig should have been aborted
5)She is a rotten mother

These below the belt insults and salnder have not fazed Palin one bit.Yet, mention that Obama has done nothing since graduating from Harvard and he falls apart.

Impeachbush
1. I oppose Obama because he is a left-wing big-government Socialist, not because he is black.

2. Us hicks here in small-town Pennsylvania are not all poor or uneducated or unemployed. We are more interested in low taxes than in unemployment benefits or job training programs. Only Obama and his elite friends think we are hopeless.

3. However, you are right in one respect. Obama will lose many votes in rural Pennsylvania because he is black and/or because he is perceived as a Muslim. Unfortunately for Obama, most of such voters are working-class labor union Democrats.

And that is why the polls are wrong.

impeachbush
"She was put on the ticket as a cynical ploy to get the woman vote--not because she is a brilliant person."

In your dreams. But let's say it's true. Have you ever thought about why McCain was able to use a cynical ploy like that? It's because feminism is a failure, at least as far as the Democrats are concerned. Back in the 60s, the Dems abandoned the very loyal workers for women and blacks. Blacks have come through for them; 90% vote for the Dems. On the other hand, they only represent about 15% of the population.

Women represent 50% of the population, but they haven't come through for the Dems. It is true that women lean towards the Dems, but they don't vote for them in overwhelming numbers the way blacks do.

The result is that it's not hard for a Republican politician to pick out a conservative woman.

Maybe it's time for people like you to consider abandoning feminists and going back to the workers.

The impeacher man
You say Sarah and McCain are thin skinned?
Hussein Obma has already placed many things that could be said or talked about concerning himself off-limits.
His middle name, his big ears, etc..
He is a wimpy elitist.

Impeach Bush
"One more time, dummies--When he used the lipstick on a pig comment, Obama was referring to John McCain trying to pass himself off as a change agent when in fact he agrees with Bush on everything. McCain himself used the lipstick on a pig comment referring to Hillary Clinton and her healthcare policy during the primary."

Either Obama is rattled or he is unaware of the impression he has left since the RNC. The piling on Palin by the MSM has created a serious problem for Obama. It appears as if he and his handlers are obsessed with her. Appearances are everything in politics. Since the convention, Obama has been way off message. Only someone politically tone deaf would have mentioned pigs and lipstick in the same sentence.

JM051, I'm afraid that...
...you just don't understand, son. What you and your liberal buddies don't get is that we are very proud to be "rednecks". What you throw down as an insult, we rednecks pick up and wear as a badge of honor.

Maybe you could take a look at JimP's 7:22 post and learn a little something.

It would be interesting to hear from you as to what you perceive a redneck to be. Have you ever spent a substantial amount of time in rural America? My guess is that you have not, but I could well be wrong. I'm honestly interested in learning just what you believe a redneck to be.

Your Obedient Servant,

George Washington

I'm with Chris, McCain-Feingold was the unpardonable sin (in the parlance of we who cling bitterly to religion). It was a full frontal assault on the first Amendment of the US Constitution. That document that the conservative party is supposed to hold dearest of all.//
==
Ron, when NObama appoints multiple Ginsberg-level judges that rule on emotions and "International Law" vice the Constitution you will regret this decision.

http://thehill.com/campaign-2008/obama-says-he-would-look-i nto-court-nominees-hearts-2007-07-18.html

As we can plainly see, NObama wants SCOTUS judges that legislate from the bench based upon how they feel, not the Constitution.

Who is the redneck here?
To suggest that Obama's "lipstick on a pig" shot, was not directed toward Palin,is to confess self-idiocy. Was his audience rolling in the aisles because they had never heard the line before? Please!
As for the long over-due demotion of Mathews
and Olberrman at MSNBC, we can only hope CNN gets rid of some of its over-the-top sycophants,
who, among other things, recently attacked a congressman for using the word "uppity"; a term they declare to be unacceptable because somewhere, long long ago, a reference appears in which a slave was described as being such.
Yes, Bush made mistakes, but OBama and his neo-marxist followers are not the answer.

Impeachbush
is in denial. The Obama campaign is toast.

George Washington
Thank you for giving me the benefit of the doubt. I am more traveled than you think. So here is my view. We have real problems in this country today and we need leaders who are open minded so that they can explore all of the possibilities before making a best choice. I don't consider myself a liberal. I am a moderate and I don't think all of the answers to our probelms are going to come from one side or another. Also in my travels I have come to discover that people are more alike then they are different and that sadly our local cultures are giving way to a blanding of America. I can go from the Suburbs of New York to Dotham Alabama to Peru Indiana and when I turn on the TV I see the same shows, when I go the mall I see the same stores and same resturants, and the kids wearing the same fashions.

I have believe that the Red State/ Blue State thing is a myth it is more a matter of proportion. 60-40 vs 40-60. I also see lots of contradictions like good baptsst girls from Alabama, and Missisippi taking off their shirts in wet tee shirt contests at spring break time.

I do see some differences as I travel. I see more public demonstration of faith in the South then even in rural parts of my own state.

BTW I live in rural part of upstate new york in a town with as many cows as people. Many of my neighbors Hunt and Fish, but I don't. Not my idea of fund, but I respect them and think of them as good people and good neighbors. One of my neighbors mother's drives as car woth a bumper sticker that says Impeach Bush, but I bet if I asked her to identify herself she might say she was a Redneck or a Country Gal.

The problem with mythical identification is that they are full of contridictions. Like suggesting that a Mitt Romney or a John McCain is anything but an elitest. My point is that proud of your heritage is terrific. Proud to be dumb is dumb.

JMO51
Please clarify: are you saying rednecks are proud to be dumb?

Also, you did not anwer GW's question. Define redneck in your own terms.

Lastly, the point I was trying to make and that GW was trying to underscore is that we rednecks feel good about ourselves and are proud, but not in a boastful way. To have elitists branding us as rednecks is a badge of honor to us. It confirms for us that we are on the right track. So we are 'proud' about being rednecks and wear the monicker thusly. We are not willfully ignorant and unsophisticated or self-righteous. We are just ordinary Americans exercising our God given rights, doing our best to obey the Ten Commandments while acknowledging our own imperfections. The 'pride and righteousness' that Ms. Parker refers to is nothing more than we rednecks telling a bunch of pretentious judgemental busy bodies to mind their own business and if they don't , we will resist them with relentless vigor. So, yeah, I too am proud to be a 'Redneck'.

Impeach et al

If Obama was not aware of the implications of his pig comment, perhaps he does not have enough experience.

I can see it now, sitting with his foot facing the Saudi king or telling the leader of China to come to his table using his finger in stead of his hand, or eating with his left hand. The possible gaffes are endless, given the ammo he hands out in the US.

Look
I'm just as angry as you guys are (Chris & Ron Jones)and wasn't sure I was going to vote for McCain. After watching, reading and praying, I have concluded that this country is at a Crossroads, both figuratively and literally. Obama doesn't have a clue as to what makes this country exceptional and as far as I'm concerned he views it with contempt.
YOu are cutting off your nose to spite your face. If anything, vote against Obama, as Susan
said, we have downticket candidates that can win if there are coat tails. It's up to you to make that happen. You are forgetting, that
we had a President that was/is in the tank for immigration, who signed the McC/Feingold abortion but he was BEATEN by the American people. MaCain was BEATEN by the American people. We couldn't have won those battles twice without the House standing with us, LED by Conservative Republicans. McCain can only do so much, he can propose legislation, as President unlike as Senator he cannot write bills, vote on bills or pass bills. We need
MORE downticket conservatives right up to dog catcher. We are in a war for the soul of our
country..do we remain a representative Republic or will we slip down the slope not only to Gomorrah but to Marxism. BHO is a Marxist, he's endorsed by the Communist Party of America, they are on record as saying with him in office, their work all these decades will finally succeed. That in itself should make every patriotic American of every political stripe to race to the polls Nov. 4 and vote
the Republican ticket..believe me, I thought long and hard about voting third party at the top of the ticket but that's not going to
stop the Marxists. The GOP via McC have realized that without us, the Conservatives they are toast. Without us the country is toast. I don't want my grandchildren suffering as a former co worker did under any form of
marxist rule..the DemonRATs running that party
are closet Marxists.

McCain thinks you are stupid
Choosing Sarah Palin does not prove that John McCain is not a RINO. It only proves that he understands that he needs the conservative base votes to become President. It makes me laugh that people can be dumb enough to believe it.

GOTTA LOVE IT!The libs are going NUTS!!

Gov. Palin IS going back to Alaska right after the Fairfax rally... and she IS going to speaking to the troops (including her son) tomorrow before they leave. Happy now???

BUT, she's coming back to VA.

And, btw, what business is it of YOURS who might be watching her baby?

The answer is, NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!

But if you're so concerned, why don't you demand to know from each of the women in Congress who is watching their children?????

You can get the list of women in Congress off the internet! :-)

Obama an elitist?

Ah, Mr. ImpeachBuch, I'm sorry to..
...bring up this rather embarrassing question, but since you have mentioned the "bridge to nowhere", well, after all, you did bring it up...

There are two U.S. Senotors who are prominent in cuurent news who voted for the "bridge to nowhere" earmark. Would you care to take a guess as to who I'm referring to?

One U. S. Senator currently on the national stage voted against the earmark. I wonder if you know who that is?

Could I offer you a hint?....naaaah...I think I'll let my fellow TH posters educate you.

You liberals keep it up, this is great!

Half Right
Well, Kathleen, you might be getting better. At least you are half right in this article. Obama is an elitist.

Impeachbush
Who is guarding America while you and your ilk are spewing your hated? It is our men and women in uniform, Sara Palin's son included. That is who are protecting your rights to be such a first class idiot.

Government out of my skirt!
Government should be limited to those things that people cannot do for themselves. It should protect us by fighting when we need to. It should build our roads and bridges. It should make sure that certain rights are upheld for every citizen -- like getting a basic education. Otherwise, it should trust us and respect basic folks enough to know what's best for our own lives.

I think it's fantastic that Sarah Palin chose to have Trig. She absolutely walks the walk of pro-life. But I'm pro-life, too, and I like to think that a personal, private decision like that should be up to me, my husband and my God, not up to Sarah Palin. To me, that's not a conservative value, it's an invasive one. It's saying that I don't know what's best for me, but she does.

That's a government that doesn't trust or respect me, and I find that offensive.

Michael: But you've got to admit that

Marxist Obama would LOVE to BE an elitist.

Poor guy, just doesn't have the upbringing, class (and I DON'T mean money!) and good taste.

Let me get this straight....
some Americans, specifically cons, would rather elect a person based on their persona/life story/who they could have a beer with rather than elect a person based on substance and their policy prescriptions for the ills of our nation.

Haven't we been down this road before? GWB comes to mind.

Secondly, how exactly is Obama an "elitist"? Hell, the McCain's personal net worth makes the Obama's look like a charity case. Exactly how is Obama an elitist?

Finally, what is wrong with entrusting the presidency with the smartest person in the room? I'd prefer to have someone who is a
"nerd" running the nation rather than a messianic cowboy anyday.

Libs going nuts....................
Anne and others of TH, If you think the libs are going nuts here. Go over to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ and listen to the slander and smut being pumped out.

It is no wonder they are shakeing in their cesspools and blabbering their swill.

Democrats and the Liberals are so pathetically inept, lying, 'OH I can not say it I promised God I would stop'

I see why they pray to satan, believe in smut, porn, work on Sundays, Gay's and Lesbieans, tax tax tax, and all forms of debotchery. If they had to tell the truth their lips would catch fire and consume their faces.

Dancing on the Ellen show.
Both Barack and his stately wife have appeared on the Ellen show and have done the obligatory dancing and prancing. I don't know if that establishes his elitist credentials or not but I hope that Sarah will not schedule a similar appearance. I prefer to see Sarah shooting at targets with great precision and accuracy.

Ralph Ellison
How do you come to the judgment that Obama is "the smartest person in the room"? Just because he has a Harvard degree (based on affirmative action)?

Obama has never held an honest job. His carreeer as a "community organizer" is a euphemism for "voter fraud specialist." He proved his elitist status with his remarks about the "unwashed" at his San Francisco fundraiser.

PS to Ralph Ellison
The "smartest person in the room" would not make lame jokes comparing a woman to a "pig" or "smelly fish." I thought you lefties were supposed to be PC, but I guess race trumps gender when push comes to shove.

Ralph Ellison writes:
Finally, what is wrong with entrusting the presidency with the smartest person in the room? I'd prefer to have someone who is a

we've tried that a few times in history, and got stuck with Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and the Adamses.

Dancing with Ellen Degenerate
Dancing might be OK in the proper setting, but prancing with a lesbian is definitely elitist (and worse).

Charles
"Just because he has a Harvard degree (based on affirmative action)?"

AA? First off, he went to Columbia first. He then went to Harvard Law School. He was an outstanding student and had great accomplishments. Sorry AA has nothing to do with that. AA opens doors, but doesn't give easy grades. Speaking of AA, why don't you hold GWB or Clarence Thomas to the same standard?

"His carreeer as a "community organizer" is a euphemism for "voter fraud specialist."

So setting up job training program, a college preparatory tutoring program, and a tenants' rights organization in Altgeld Gardens is a bad thing? Serving your community is a bad thing? Oh wait, your a Republican.

"He proved his elitist status with his remarks about the "unwashed" at his San Francisco fundraiser."

So his comments prove that he is an "elitist"? wWhat is McCain then? A welfare case?

impeachbush
Jealous?

PS to Charles
"The "smartest person in the room" would not make lame jokes comparing a woman to a "pig" or "smelly fish."

Um no. He wasn't even talking about Palin. So is McCain "sexist" for making the same remark about HRC's health care plan 2x?

"I thought you lefties were supposed to be PC"

I thought you cons didn't give a crap about women's rights or sexism. Isn't it stated in the GOP Platform that a woman's place is in the bedroom and the kitchen?

" but I guess race trumps gender when push comes to shove."

Beautifully stated by a member of a party had as many people of color as a KKK rally. Also, didn't our party nominate a woman for VP 24 YEARS AGO? Didn't we have a serious female contender run for our nomination? Historically, isn't it amazing that Twenty-two female senators have been Democrats while thirteen have been Republicans. Did you know that of the sixteen female senators currently serving, eleven are Democrats and five are Republicans?

Ralph
Affirmative action applies to grades and job performance evaluations, as well as college admissions. It is almost impossible to give a poor performance evaluation to a minority, or to fire a minority, even if their job performance is abysmal. So what should make anyone believe that Obama was a brilliant student, considering that he cannot speak without a teleprompter?

Tenant's rights? Job training? All things that people do for themselves unless they are professional victims.

Yes, I am a Republican, and I have worked hard for everything I have without expecting or receiving a free pass.

He wants to help our failing education system with more money for teachers. CON 2
He will balance the budget and resolve our fuel shortage price gouging crisis CONS 3 AND 4.

"we've tried that a few times in history, and got stuck with Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and the Adamses."

I'll agree with you on your point somewhat. However, I wouldn't put Wilson or the Adames on the same level as GWB. I personally think GWB is down there with the likes of James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, Warren G. Harding, John Tyler, and of course Andrew Johnson.

Redneck
I'm from a small New England textile town, so I don't know if I qualify as one, however if you
stretch the definition further..it really means we are AMERICANS who believe the Founders were a lot smarter than the elitist, Progressive/marxists that look down at American exceptionalism. We are the Constitutionalists, the descendants whether by bloodline or spiritual line of those who manned the Concord Bridge, those who rallied to Washingtons call,
those who prayed, fasted for victory; those who attended churches throughout the colonies, listening to their Pastors teach them (years prior to the shot heard round the world) the responsibilities and privileges of Christian free men and women; then followed the Pastors out the church door into battle; the ones who love Freedom and are willing to sacrifice for it. In New England we were Yankee Doodles, mocked by the elites..the Tories so we took it as our own throughout the colonies. The modern elitist still don't understand Yankee Doodle.

We are in another Revolution whether we realize it or not and these enemies within must be soundly defeated otherwise we will no longer be a representative Republic, the 9% majority is sending signals already. Rednecks instinctively know this..and we got Zerobama's
message in San Francisco. He laid the gauntlet down at his whine and brie party, and we picked it up.

Redneck is an incredibly perjorative
term and I think it's one of those things where people who have been stereotyped as rednecks can use it but everyone else cannot. Seriously, the book "Redneck Manifesto" gives a good history of the people labeled such and the discrimation and abuse they have faced from indentured servitude is not pretty.

Charles
"Affirmative action applies to grades and job performance evaluations, as well as college admissions."

Actually no.

"It is almost impossible to give a poor performance evaluation to a minority, or to fire a minority, even if their job performance is abysmal."

Really? Have any objective evidence to prove that?

"So what should make anyone believe that Obama was a brilliant student,"

Grades. SAT scores. President of the Harvard Law Review. Take you pick.

"...considering that he cannot speak without a teleprompter?"

Really? Are you faulting the man for using a teleprompter? Seems as if John McCain can't speak with or without a teleprompter. Let's not even bring up GWB.

"Yes, I am a Republican, and I have worked hard for everything I have without expecting or receiving a free pass."

As do numerous Americans, including Obama. You want a pat on the back?

"Robert "Sheets" Byrd, (D-WV) the only Klansman in Congress. Nuff' said."

No friend of mine. Just curious, are you proud of Jesse Helms or Strom Thurmond? Enough said.

Obama and the Harvard Law Review
I've heard that the year Obama was made president of the Law Review was the first year they did not base it on merit. Many schools have gone to this as a form of so-called affirmative action.

And as Ralph brings up Obama's SAT's I'd like to know what his numbers were for the SAT and the LSAT and how they compared to the other students admitted to his college and law school.

So Ralph where are these numbers?

A womens right..........................
A womens right is to be where ever she wants to be, same as you and me.
A woman is far more qualified to run a Government than any Senator with just 1/2 of one term in and not pushing for anything.
Obama said, he wants change in so many things, then why did he not propose one change to anything on his list while in the Senate.

Answer, He was too busy getting ready to be the 'CHOSEN ONE'

And why must a person of colour be granted the right to the highest level of Educational standards at tax payers expense, when I needed to sign a $25,000 dollar loan note for each of my three college grads, who were all 4.0 or better, my son was Suma Com Laude at his graduation from Akron U. A good but lower priced college. Why did his lazy as$ parent qualify for affirmative action, 'Because of Colour' nothing more nothing less and that does not make you the smartist one in the room Mr. Ralph Ellison.

Ralph Ellison writes:

For Butcher @ 13:30
0blahma's statement on "tax only applies to those making greater than $200,000" may be true--as he DID NOT mention that it meant "US dollars" (he actually meant Zimbabwean).

b0's budget-balancing claim sounds a lot like treasonous former Canuck PM Mulroney's failed sales-pitch for GST--which even Grit Senators*** rejected.

***Canadian Senate is like British House of Lords; by appointment, holds seat until age 75 (easy to reach, as the role is stress-free). Basically, even those who would have benefitted from GST considered it unnecessary--and Mulroney got it pushed through by adding more Senators (some of whom were between 45 and 53 in age--meaning 20+ years of taxpayer burden) which disproved (to the very few Canadians who actually believed the long-chinned traitor) his claim royally!

For Butcher @ 13:46
You wrote "A woman is far more qualified to run a Government than any Senator with just 1/2 of one term in and not pushing for anything".

"And as Ralph brings up Obama's SAT's I'd like to know what his numbers were for the SAT and the LSAT and how they compared to the other students admitted to his college and law school."

Very fair question. Unfortunately, we don't hae access to his SAT scores nor his LSAT score. However, the median score to get into HLS at that time was 171 on the LSAT (95th Percentile). Pretty impressive. Actually, that LSAT core would qualify anyone for MENSA membership. He graduated with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) magna c@m laude. Pretty impressive.

Even more intersting is this column by one of TH's columnists:

LuLu (and Ralph)
We all know that if Baraq Hussein Soetoro-Obama and a white student had absolutely equal qualifications for Harvard Law, Obama would be admitted purely on the basis of race (and possibly a double minority as a Muslim). In fact, Obama would beat out a white male with better qualifications. That is the crime of affirmative action. If we were a minority, we would demand "reparations" for the discrimination practiced by Harvard and other schools.

Lumberjack
"Your fellow Dems want to bring back the so called "Fairness Doctrine" to stifle dissent from talk radio."

Um I personally don't. Let cons have their say on talk radio. If someone wants to insulate themselves with the opinions of only Limbaugh or Hannity, then go ahead. I like to watch Olbermann and Maddow (I got a crush on her!) as well as Bill-O or Hannity (sometimes). Now, I can't stand Limbaugh. So, I don't listen to him. Simple as that.

"and I like Wilson was an eddicated idiot to use my Granddad's parlance"

In many ways yes. His views on race and immigrants were deplorable.

Charles
Since you like to dwell in hypotheticals as well as personal resentments, i wonder how many qualified people regardless of color were beat out by GWB and John McCain simply because of who their fathers and grandfathers were. Aren't legacy admissions just as "heinous" in your opinion?

Then Obama should continue to use those sick jokes and go down in flames. The voters will judge, not you or the media.

Ralph
Obama's refusal to release his SAT and/or LSAT scores tends to confirm that he has something to hide, i.e., that his scores were well below the median for Columbia and/or Harvard.

Actually, unlike you, I watch all three major cable news channels in order to gain a cross-section of opinion. Olberman stands out from the crowd of liberals because he is much less intelligent and just your basic smart a$$ wisecracker.

re: The term Redneck
Redneck was a term applied to indentured workers (aka white slaves) because the sun burnt their necks red. Most in this country don't realize that indentured servitude was a thriving business in this country. Once a person was indentured usually for a 7 year contract either to repay a debt or pay for passage they rarely left indenture as the food they ate, clothes they wore and shelter they were given were applied to those contracts extending them. When by some stroke of luck the contracts came due to expire they were simply sold which extended the contract for another 7 years plus monies added for support and maintenance. Basically, this was a thinly disguised form of slavery exported from England to the new world.

signs Obama has lost
What other election was it ever natural to compare the #1 candidate on one side to the #2 on the other?
I don't think that's ever happened, but it's a bad sign for the freshman senator.

The fact that the freshman senator himself has gone out of his way to attack the VP of his opponent is a sign that there is a grave power differential here.

Heck, just watch his interview with O-reilly. He looks like a goofy kid trying our dumb ideas on his dad.

Personally, I think the postmortems will pinpoint a time several months ago when he really lost it (either Rev Wright, or the Pennsylvania primary clinging remarks.)

Rednecks for Cowgirls
As a Redneck (I like to shoot guns, fish, hike in the woods, camp, etc), I for one would be honored to have a cowgirl as VP.

Obama peaked in February and has been going downhill ever since. Hillary beat him up badly in the primaries (assist to Rush and Operation Chaos). But I think the "jump the shark" moment was the bogus Presidential seal and the Berlin inaugural speech. When he "dissed" Hillary, he blew his last chance.

Obama got some influential
people to recommend him to Harvard. Among them was Khalid Al-Mansoor. So yeah he's got a lot of things to hide.

Palin's solution was
for her son Track to join the military. Great place for some discipline. Perhaps when she is President in 4 years she will send a select group of congressmen and senators to 3 months of bootcamp. When faced with a problem, this lady has some great solutions. She's a problem solver - whether it's family or community.

You hit my nail on its head- the thing I find so offputting about the guy-he's not someone you'd go into tough times with.
Just the very idea of someone like Junior "having your back" is kinda frightening. This is the guy who was taxed to a hissy pique over having to answer 8 questions.
He doesn't strike me as having much staying power (look at his work history), or much backbone, or much interest in anything more than himself.
I think in a tight spot with him, you'd be seein' alot of az and elbows goin the other way.
Too delicate.
Too effete.

Lipstick on a pig-- DELICIOUS!
Good column, Kathleen.

Once again, the 'Crats are running scared when this should be easy for them. Presidente Jorge has stunk it up terribly, but they NEVER seem to get the culture war thing [see arugula, wind surfing after publicly badmouthing his country (Cohen-Kerry), lack of wrath if his wife were raped (Dutaxus)]... they remain tone-deaf because they fundamentally look down on Middle America and think that guns, patriotism and religion are silly.

The left's "religion" is their desire to use their "superior intellect" to direct our lives for us. Example: Shrillary simply did not get the drivers' license thing in her own blue state of New York where 75% vehemently opposed giving ILLEGALS licenses-- because they KNEW that it was REALLY a scheme to let them vote.

Barack is an elitist... while I agree with a few things he says (even a blind hog occasionally stumbles upon an acorn), I see why he makes Peoria anxious... and ironically, Peoria is RIGHT to be angst-ridden about what he would REALLY seek to do with YOUR $.

As Keith Olbermouth and Chris Matthews screech louder still, Middle America is once again moved more by Rush, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and the great Lou Dobbs who better relate to them. When the left and the myopic miscreant employer crowd get enough ILLEGALS here voting, that will change, and America will be lost forever-- enjoy it while it lasts.

Firstly, I never said a word about Rednecks in my orginal post. My only point is that we to direct this very important election towards policies not identification. I see a real attempt to divide us as a country based upon our own regional prejudices and misconceptions. For example, on occasion I have had someone make a comment about NY based up the assumption that New York is only New York City.

But just for the fun of it let me answer you question. To many people of color and to a few gay friends of mine. Redneck recalls visions of the Jim Crow south. Of lynchings, of gay bashing of prejudice and hatred of people who are different. That is one way I have heard the term used and my mother if she were still alive today would probably say that was her definition of Red Necks.

Another definition was one I heard not too long ago when I down at my Place in Panama City Beach, FL which as you know is affectionately referred to as the Redneck Riveria. Nice nice couple from Birmingham Alabama he's career military and she is a retired school teacher was complaining about the noise mess and drunkiness of some these Redneck, who come from deep in the back country of her own state and don't know what a trash can is.

Then their is the endearing and unassuming were just regular folks that I hear from my neighbor often refers to himself as a Redneck. He would define Redneck as the real people doing the real work with their hands.

That is the best I can do. Now you try defining eliitist.

The policies debate
has been settled a long time ago - decades ago. Americans don't like leftist policies, or leftist politicians (like Obama, Kerry, Gore, Dukakis, Mondale...and on and on and on).

George Washington
The Bridge to no where was brought to you by far right conservative Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska and yes John McCain opposed it. But Sarah Palin while running for Governor prised Stevens for delivering for Alaska and support the bridge and never said no and kept the money when Congress, yes with John McCain on the right side of the issue said no.

Palin lied about this and is continuing to repeat this lie on the stump everyday and News Oragnizations including the Wall Street Journal have caught her on this lie and yet she continues to say it. He has refused an interview with any member of the press Left or Right Wing because you know that this will be the first question asked by any responsible journalist.

Why - Because it is this made up story about the bridge and the chef who was reassigned that provides the link between traditional conservative Palin and Maverick John McCain. Without the link how to you rationalize the pick that warms the hearts of the far right and appeals to the reformist views of independents.

This is the problem with the Palin/McCain Match, it requires bending the truth to make the myth work.

RED NECK
Good example, maldain; however, there must be one-half a dozen myths of how the term "Redneck" came into being.
The most common I've heard is that folks who worked outside, such as on a tenant farm in the South, suffered sunburn on their now-bare neck after a Saturday haircut.
Came across another last year in West Virginia -- an article in a newspaper and in The Goldenseal -- Book of the West Virginia Mine Wars, which claimed the term originated during the mine wars in Southern West Virginia when two or three thousand miners crossed Blair Mountain to do battle with the thugs Baldwin-Felt agents. Supposedly, the miners tied a red bandana around their necks so other miners would recognize them during the fighting.

Montani Semper Liberi!

Give me a redneck anytime.
The 'rednecks' fight in the wars, go to church and own guns. "Hoot" Gibson at ABC and all the city slicker elites will never understand honesty and freedom.

They don't even know why we hate them. They are the Tories and we are the Rebels. We will never quit fighting the failing communist systems.

Dan
Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000.

If Palin lied
where exactly is the bridge to no-where? If you find it we'll put it on Ebay right away and sell it.

Redneck
"Redneck" means many things to many people. In my mind, a "redneck" is someone who is fed up with political correctness and not afraid to express an opinion that might offend the overly sensitive. A "redneck" is not necessarily political.

You are right..
but that got corrected in 2004 (isn't it just mind boggling that Bush won pretty decisively in 2004 - even after an all out attack by the left)
Remember - that Al Gore was running as the third term of Bill Clinton who was a guy from the south and a centrist (Bill Clinton wasn't a lefty like the other Democratic nominees). Same story with Carter.

I have never been what anyone would call a Redneck, but ever since I was first handed a ballot, I have been happy to vote like one.

It never ceases to amaze me to see otherwise intelligent people falling for this con-artist from Chicago. Despite that all his policies would be disastrous for our economy, our security, etc., they seem driven to endorse his will to power, if for no other reason than to rub certain people's noses in it out of pure spite.

As anyone who has read my posts could tell you, I wasn't feeling good about our candidate at all. And I was prepared to jump ship if he reinforced that apprehension with some carbon-copy colleague for a running mate. He was repeatedly warned that his base was wavering, and he listened. I still expect to be fighting him on a number of issues throughout his presidency, but knowing that I have in Mrs. Palin a staunch ally sitting at the Cabinet table is the reassurance I needed. And I'll be picking up yard signs and bumper stickers for my neighbors and myself from the local GOP HQ tomorrow (they had run out of both when I went down there the other day) and casting my ballot this November for John S. McCain for president.

By the way, my mother was born and raised in Wiesbaden and worked in that very hospital after the war. She always liked seeing it on TV, not least because that was usually where the cameras turned right after those in the Middle East now enthusiastically cheering for Barack Hussein had just released one or more of their American hostages.

About community organizers
I've heard community organizers describe themselves as people who help people find resources, hook them up with services, and provide advocacy. This is social work, and as a social worker, I have never, ever seen a lawyer get dirty or work for nothing aside from the occassional pro bono case that some firms require. The community organizers in my experience have always told other people what to do and do not actually engage in the direct work themselves- their staff does.

This is why community organizers have absolutely no idea what they are organizing because they look and situation and react to it based upon what they need to look good- to be a good Massa. Just as there are root causes for poverty, there are also root causes for prosperity. Unless as a social worker/community organizer you are actively promoting PERSONAL choices and behaviors that undergird prosperity and discouraging focus on the external, you are doing more harm than anything else. Obama is such a person, because if he really worked in the trenches he would not be rich and would not turn to big government for answers because he would know the deal. He doesn't.

Impeach, JMO51 et al
Keep up the McCain/Palin = Bush (W) argument.

It won't be long until McCain/Palin make the Obama/Biden = Reid/Pelosi argument. I understand that Reid/Pelosi run houses reached the 15% approval mark! Oh, yeah, that increase is from their 5 week vacation! Reid/Pelosi are in play for 2 more years. Bush term ends Jan.

luckymick
"Reid/Pelosi are in play for 2 more years."

Aside from the fact that Pelosi has to face her constituents every two years just like any other member of the House, and that she's got fierce competition from Cindy Sheehan this year, it is not carved in stone that either will still be holding their respective gavels come January. Granted, the Republicans' taking control of either chamber is astronomically unlikely, but there is a simmering rebellion in their own party glaring angrily at Reid, and Nine-Percent Nancy richly deserves the same.

startled that we could agree on anything
"God bless all of the people who died at the hands of these evil men and may those evil men rot and burn in hell for their deeds!"

I'm simply amazed that you and I feel exactly the same way toward the God-cursed Mohammedans who carried out the mass murders of 9/11.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that ALL centuries from the last one on are American centuries. It's a unipolar world, and as long as we stay alert and don't succumb to the European disease, we'll be sitting in the big chair.

(Which reminds me of a joke from early in the war, and I can't resist retelling it: to the question, "why are there no Muslims in 'Star Trek'?", the answer, "because it takes place in the future.")

Another origin for redneck.
The rich planters used to look down on anyone who actually worked his land and got dirty. The long hours in the sun burned their necks red and the term was a form of derision directed at hardworking farmers by elitist "planters".

Bring em on
Bush's "bring em on" comment came right around July 3rd of 2003. Things were not going well in Baghdad and at this press conference Bush was showing the strain a little: "bring em on." There appears to be an endless supply of suicide bombers. Why?

Our country was united, in a way, after 9/11. But, as usual, we dropped the ball. The instinct to just HIT BACK prevailed over analysis of what had happened and why.

Until we face, as a country, just why this happened, we are just ignoring the reality that 1.4 billion Muslims have the perception that we are out to do in their way of life. This perception is indecently exacerbated by our troops on the ground IN THEIR LAND!

I was told
all republicans were rich; is that true. If it aint true which issue do you care about cuz obviously its not the economic condition. Thats why Im curious if you all are all rich

Frederick- concerning the "rich"
At this point in American history, "rich" is anyone with an income. You decide- I earn $52,000.00 per year, hold another part-time job that yields an additional $17,000.00 per year, and had one child because that's all I reasoned I could comfortably afford. I hold no credit card debt, and drive my cars (I like Saturns) until there are around 200,000 miles on them, and get my clothing from Kohl's or places like it. I am looked upon as "rich" by some of my colleagues because my daughter attends a private high school and I bought a new compact car for her this year. Is this rich, or is it the result of effective practical decisions?

Prosperity has its root causes just as poverty does. I find most Americans (for now) can prosper to varying levels if certain choices are made and disciplines exercised. I am a conservative republican precisely because I see what government dependence creates due to my experience in my profession; people want the results of the "rich" despite personal decisions. This is where big gov't opportunists, at this point many democrats, move in with promises of 40 acres and a mule.

BTW- those who made good decisions about what to do with the 40 acres and the mule prospered!

Mme. Bovary
Kathleen:

Madame Bovary was a novel-reading, fantasy-living husband-murderess in a stifling social setting where women's lives were defined by the men they were attached to. Governor Palin, as far as I can tell, is an honest, straightforward, faithful woman who works with her husband to achieve family and community goals, for the betterment of both. Like my mom, aunts, both grandmothers, and countless women across the Western United States. I beg you not to sell us short! The Mme. Bovary comparison is so demeaning to American women of the 21st century. And 20th. and 19th. Please give it the quiet burial it deserves and give Sarah Palin the honor she deserves!
Thanks,

We need nothing waived. What's needed is for people to know what they are looking at and a reliance on recorded- often anecdotal- achievements and reputation.

The best couselors I know are not hung up on community awards and organized public recognition. They rely on the feedback from kids who visit and call for years to come. When a counselor is doing a great job, its only those who made hard decisions and changes who remember the work that was done together. In fact, the best counselors often frustrate the administration (bureaucrats)! The same is true for any public servant- look to the public they served. There's the answer.

Let the HIPPA laws remain. Instead, exercise the discernment skills!

Still nothing on Immigration
I know nobody cares about illegal immigration except those of us that are seriously effected by it.. I LOVE the Palin selection and think she will take us Rep.'s over the top. But as a native Californian and retired L/E officer here for 32yrs. I can only cry at the damage to the quality of life done by the massive invasion of Mexican's.. Ca. used to have one of the best public school systems in the nation, we invented the paramedic system and our trauma center were the best. LA County used to have 16 trauma centers, now there are 6or7.. Because of the unpaid bills brought on by the illegals. Don't get me started on "achor babies".. My anglo grandson went to a elementary school where he was the minority and had to sit up to two hours a day while the little Medican kids were taught English that their parents refused to use. NOw they have take over several municipalities, getting voted on the the city councils of Huntington Park, Cudahy, Downey and several others. They order the police dept.'s not to do DUI check points because to many drunk, unlicensed, un insured mexicans get arrested... But MCCain is still a wiennie on illegals and I wish someone else was on top... Maybe Tom Tancredo/Palin!!!

Robert - JUST MOVE!
We moved from CA 9 years ago, and it was the best decision we've ever made. I am a minority and I enjoy diversity but CA is becoming Mexico and not in a good way. I think the democratic leadership in CA will make every good american leave town leaving liberals and mexicans. PERFECT! No immigration law can help CA because it's too late. However, other states like CO have on the ballot the need to show proof of citizenship before receiving public services and this makes this state - a great state to reside. What about the tax madness? Did Hugh say he is moving to CO?

Frederik - BHO aint a N, he's Bi
and incase you missed it, did you see any brothas from inner city chicago where he earned his 'community organization' roots on his DNC acceptance speech? Did you see any black people on his life story except his father who abandoned him? His entire video was with 'typical white people'. BHO is out for himself not for the blacks or white, heck not for americans - period! It's all about the messiah, and soon he will find out that there is only one messiah - and it's not him. Nobody thinks of BHO as a N, americans do lack trust because the man had few accomplishments that could make him a good president. Let's not mention his associates who have recently been jailed. Forget it, I guess he is a brotha with a little white in him even if he did not mention King on his big day and everyone watched hoping to hear him discuss 'race issues' you know the speech he gave when wright happened to him before throwing uncle wright under the 'i did not really know him' bus?

What is Change? And who gives it?
After listening to the change mantra for so long from obama, I decided to think about it some more. I realized that Obama did not represent change except in skin tone. His ideas are not new, they are all like Kerry's ideas in 2004. Americans want change, but they don't trust Obama enough to give him the honor to bring it partly because nothing on his resume can earn him that trust. He has voted along party lines 97% of the time. And that means, he won't be different than the average democrat (although he had us fooled in January and February long enough to steal the nomination). McCain admits to the failure of congress on both sides to serve americans. He further defines the failure is due to putting self interest above citizen's needs. He uses his life story to explain how he is now owned by america and his life story is used as a backdrop for the argument - forget party and vote for country first because change can only happen when the leaders admit to mistakes and act less partisan and more american. He will win this election because HE AND PALIN offer that hope which Obama talks about but does not have anything to back up. His entire acceptance speech was 'bush has been wrong 100% of the time'. Really? really? Even a broken clock is right twice a day - making bush out to be a consistently wrong guy is not a winnig strategy. He has lost his 'fresh face' appeal that made him likable - he has become angry and bitter and insulting. This is not about Palin, it's about his belief he is 'above being called unaccomplished' and Palin's life story does just that. the small town americans are unforgiving.

Impeachbush - Not Track, Sarah-huh?
Don't you libs ever learn, aevey! you trashed Bush's daughters for partying then kept reminding conservatives cheney's daughter is gay (including Kerry using it during a debate) without the understanding that THE PARENTS, NOT CHILDREN are running for office. So run off and find something like....Obama's pastor, rezko, ayers etc and maybe americans will distrust Sarah. But using her children to discredit her is well.......an old tactic that has NEVER worked. Adult children and older teens do rebel - what a shocker to americans because that is really a Palin Family problem LOL!

california, trade and...arugula
Robert, we're about to buy in california, now you're getting me worried with your comments...

"...small town americans cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

the funny thing is that Obama himself attacked NAFTA during the primaries, so I think his anti-trade sentiment might be stronger than small town America's :-). Even these days on his campaign trail he keeps complaining about these trade agreements, and how many jobs have been outsourced, blah, blah...if it's so, why isn't he looking fwd, help re-train your workforce to face and sustian competition from abroad, ot oups, sorry this is what McCain said in his speechat theconvention...it's funny how a 72 year old man is more fwd loooking than a 46 year old who wants to reverse the trade agreements and possibly go back to some form of protectionism that is going to hurt the economy even more. those times are gone, I don't think you can go back to the protectionsit times...

ok, and the arugula thing :-)...people, don't you know arugula also by the name 'rocket'? I'm European originally and lived in the UK for the past 6 years and only recently I got to the US, and I was susrpised to see that nobody calls arugula 'rocket' here... ok, arugula is known in the Mediterranean part of Europe as 'arugula', but in England the term used is 'rocket', if you say arugula probably you won't get much of a reaction either there. So, is there a chance that if Obama said 'rocket' he wouldn't have come across as 'elitist' :-) I mean now seriously, arugula is no 'elitist' lettuce in Italy or elsewhere in Europe, actually historically it used to be used more frequently by people in the poorest parts of Italy, even to this day arugula is probably more popular in the Southern Italian cuisine than in the N. one for instance.

Arugula/Obama
Arugula's not lettuce, it's one of those fancy little greens that you put in a salad to make it a bit "fancier", here's a picture of it, sort of resembles an oak leaf.

Sarah Palin, now that's more like lettuce, strong, well liked, sturdy and everyone knows what it is or should I say, what she is, an authentic All American girl next door, the kind you want along on a camping trip.

Now arugula, that's more of an Obama thing, something you don't mind having around now and then, just not too much of it and something you just wouldn't think of bringing along on a camping trip. You just know that Sarah's kids would pull their weight while his would be wanting to go to their dance lessons.

Like so many TH'ers, I was just about ready to leave the ballot blank, then along came Sarah Palin to breathe some life into what I thought was surely the last gasp of the conservatives.

Bsrack's reacting like he's losing his composure, his cool demeanor, his elitism has slipped away and he's babbling like an actor who lost his lines and no one can find the script. The real Obama's beginning to surface and he's coming across like bad cabbage.

Meanwhile, his campaign workers are busily posing as disenchanted Alaska residents composing phony emails smearing Sarah from one end of Alaska to the other, they're even telling the same blatant lies as though they get them off a shelf..........

That's what a community organizer does, in case anyone wanted to know....

Rednecks vs. big city elitests
How do us poor old rednecks in "flyover country" vote?

Remember this?http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/2004_election_county-by-county/

Palin is normal
For too long we have not had a picture of a normal American
that we could identify with--Sarah Palin brings back sanity
to a political process beset by political speak lawyers. She
glaringly demonstrates how far we have moved government
from the control of normal citizens(our red necks).

It is my hope and prayer
that fiesty McCain hears middle America through this woman.
She isdescribed in a negative way as a heartbeat away from the
Presidency-but that's a heartfelt loyal American heart beat from
McCain to Palin.

Palin may or may not
make it into the Margaret Thatcher class, but she is certainly in the Harry Truman category. If given the chance, she will do a good job. Too bad its McCain at the top of the ticket.

Common Ground!!!
HEY! If the left is smug and the right is self-righteous....then they agree!! FINALLY!

;->

McCains Lessons Learned
John McCain is a good man, but not a perfect one. I don't always agree with what the does and says, but I do respect him for his service to our country as well as his sons. I cannot image any democrat putting Country First and allowing one of their family members fighting for our Country. He also shows us that he Loves our Country, as I do. I think Americans forget how good we have it here. They need to travel outside the United States to see how others live.
