Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- When Sarah Palin took the stage Wednesday night, the reaction of conventioneers went beyond mere appreciation. It was gratitude.

And relief that the first Republican woman on a presidential ticket wasn't going to let them down. No one was going to be embarrassed by John McCain's maverick pick.

Several days of brutal scrutiny leading up to her acceptance speech had given them cause to wonder. Ethics questions about her possible involvement in trying to get a former brother-in-law fired are legitimate. So are critiques of her performance as a self-professed tax-cutter and government reformer. But attacks on her family have been blistering and over the top.

Thus, much of the off-mic talk in St. Paul the past few days centered on whether she was up to the fight. Would she be able to make it through? Would she crumble? Did Palin have the stuff to withstand the bludgeoning scrutiny?

Awaiting her performance reminded me of the day 13 years ago when Shannon Faulkner became the first female cadet at South Carolina's The Citadel. Agree or not with the politics that propelled her there, women wanted her to be at least competent. To be fit. To make them proud.

We know the history of that disappointment. I suspect that even many Democrats would confess to a private hope that Palin would do well. There aren't enough women in high places yet for us to enjoy a first-woman's stumble, no matter what the arena.

Palin delivered.

What she showed was strength, conviction, determination, confidence, a willingness to rumble and fearlessness. No caribou caught in the headlights, she.

Whatever conclusions the punditry might draw from Palin's remarks, we can be fairly certain that Middle America felt nothing but redemption and salvation. Dozens of e-mails in my inbox confirm as much. "Pumped" is the word I keep hearing.

Palin's role in this election is as groundbreaking as Barack Obama's for the obvious reasons. Both have validated the best instincts of their parties and our nation. But there's more. Both also seem to be filling a need that isn't specifically about leadership or qualifications for office.

When Obama fills a stadium with tens of thousands of admirers, you can be sure that part of the draw is the audience's sense of being part of something new and extraordinary. They want to be part of the Next New Thing and people feel elevated in his presence.

Similarly, when Palin brought Republican conventioneers to their feet, they weren't just applauding their vice presidential nominee; they were applauding themselves. They were proud of her, sure, but they were also proud of themselves. Why, they had nominated a (BEG ITAL)woman(END ITAL)!

It is delightful to feel good about oneself and Palin delivered energy where spirits had flagged and inspired a vision that had become blurred.

Glancing around the convention center in St. Paul, it was not hard to see that the GOP is in dire need of a transfusion. I've been to retirement villages that had fewer gray hairs and to Old South parties that were more diverse. For whatever reason, the Republican Party has not been able to attract young people or minorities in numbers that reflect the mainstream America they purport to represent.

Is it the message or the messenger? Both -- and Republicans know it. Behind closed doors around the Twin Cities, talk focused on the need for new templates, new models. Republicans have to communicate that they, too, care about the issues Democrats have claimed as their own -- education, health and the environment. They need new ideas and new -- younger -- faces to deliver the message.

Voila. Enter Palin.

Some have criticized McCain for cynically selecting a woman only to try to attract former Hillary Clinton supporters. Obviously, there's some truth to that. Being a woman is part of Palin's appeal and running mates are often picked in hopes of securing a particular state or demographic.

But Palin brings more to the ticket than the possibility of a few female voters. She has animated voters who had little enthusiasm for the race. She has given them the very thing Democrats have been enjoying the past several months: hope and change.

That's potent medicine. It also should come with a warning label: "May cause delusions and a false sense of power."

McCain's choice...
I think that McCain’s choice of VP nominee Palin has nothing to do with attracting Clinton supporters, but has more to do with Palin’s history of getting the job done.

What has been revealed so far is an ability on Palin’s part to effectively get that job done sans the partisanship so common to the political process today. The result is a major gain for the people subject to her governance.

Not just relief
When I learned that McCain had picked Palin I was simply relieved he had not picked Romney, Ridge or Lieberman. Then I watched her speech, and I knew I was seeing a future president, and one we will need in times which, believe it or not, are going to be even more troubling than the present.

McCain's choice
I honestly didn't see Palin as a way of reaching out to Hillary supporters. McCain nor his staff is dumb. They knew they weren't connecting with their base and were looking for someone to energize the Republican party. They could not have been more right!!

He really has energized the party. In this small town the MEN were ready to vote before Palin spoke, now it's over the top. If I were in better shape I'd volunteer to help the campaign, and I've never even thought about that before.

Mission accomplished. Now to get them elected!! The key will be can we get a majority of Congress to insure these changes they envision will be a fact. That would be the icing on this Republican's cake!!!

Republican lack of growth
You mention the shrinking Republican party and it's failure to attract young people 'for whatever reason'. You might want to first look at the politics and the exclusionary tactics of the faculty in our university system. Almost without exception,Conservatives are shut out from positions and denied tenure. Therefore, young people are exposed to only one side of the spectrum, and strongly discouraged from seeking conservative viewpoints or speakers.

Just one bone to pick
KP says: "Glancing around the convention center in St. Paul, it was not hard to see that the GOP is in dire need of a transfusion. I've been to retirement villages that had fewer gray hairs and to Old South parties that were more diverse. For whatever reason, the Republican Party has not been able to attract young people or minorities in numbers that reflect the mainstream America they purport to represent."

I respectfully disagree. IMHO, the reason the convention attendees skew the way they do is NOT a symptom of an aging white-bread party. This is a classic book-and-cover scenario. All of the varied demographics that KP longed to see DO exist in the GOP. The thing is, we're all at home, MAKING THIS COUNTRY WORK. The overwhelming majority of us simply don't have the discretionary time and resources to devote to a week-long made-for-TV political love fest. We save our discretionary time and $$ for family and rest from our labors. Fear not KP, we will ALL stand up and be counted on 4 November.

Sarah Palin
"Sarah Palin for her entire political career has been underestimated," said Paulette Simpson of the Alaska Federation of Republican Women. "She's tough, she's tenacious. I believe that she does have what it takes to get out there. Again, her ability to connect with voters and make a case is very, very, very strong."

STOP THE PRESS! This statement has been in every bit of print media on the planet and out of the mouths of every radio and TV talking head…and it was revealed that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

The boys and girls of the mainstream media are digging for everything they can find with their special research teams. They even reprint lies!

Sarah said, "I intend to give this campaign all that I have to give," she said. "And I look forward to these 60-plus days on the trail. My family looks forward to this, we're up for it, we are excited about it."

Sarah, said, “When oil and gas prices went up so dramatically and the state revenues followed with that increase, I sent a large share of that revenue directly back to the people of Alaska -- and we are now... (cheers and applause) We're now embarking on a $40 billion natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence.”

Obama made decisions that have affected millions of people and billions of dollars in finance ($865 billion of our tax dollars for the UN…Americans NOT included), decisions that became law to allow millions of unborn babies to be killed and decisions NOT to drill for oil and gas to stop sending $700 billion annually to countries that finance terrorism round the world that forces Americans to be enablers of terrorism.

Collectivism
This whole idea of voting for someone because they are a woman or of a particular race, etc. is such a sad commentary on the state of our nation's slow meandering course away from the principles that made this country great to begin with: individualism, self-reliance, hard-work, rule of law. From sports to politics, we are a nation of collectivists who take unearned pride in the accomplishments of other who are in our camp. We don't have enough self-esteem and pride in our own accomplishments, so we look to others of our race, gender, or community, to give us a sense of vicarious accomplishment. Either that or we demonize people of ability who are holding the world on their shoulders, and the ugly, vicious little mediocrities known as government bureaucrats continue to persecute men and women of ability with impunity. Here in Utah, for instance, even though an independent audit of the Division of Securities uncovered a web of corruption, unjust prosecution, lies, and deceit, including felony violations of the law. The Governor, John Huntsman, who has jurisdiction over the entire Department of Commerce, refuses to hold these people accountable for their actions. Is this really the America that our Founders bled and died to give to us?

Cheryl, do you think the Hitlery-bots CAN be reached by conservatives?

Redmanrt
Spot on. Now we can look to the future and have one.

Why Sarah Appeals to Americans
I agree with Ms. Parker that the GOP needs an injection of young blood. Whatever happened to all the young people that Reagan energized? I know--they grew old.

Reagan used to say no subtle colors, put up a bold banner. That's what Sarah Palin represents and the liberals and Rockefeller Republicans look on with dismay.

She is not willing to accept scraps from the Democrat table like some of the aging Republicans in Congress. She wants the whole meal. She wants Republicans to take over the government, build the economy and jobs, and protect the USA from the growing fanaticism all over the world.

Conservative Republicans want to revitalize and renew this country and not with the Democrat nostrums of "Tax and Spend." Republicans care about people but not as loyal serfs dependent on Washington but as free, hardworking, patriotic citizens who want the government to stay out of the way as they work to raise families--like Sarah's--and stand ready, as ever, to defend the greatest country on earth.

Iraq war God's plan?
That's what Palin thinks. Supported Alaska recession. Husband member of a fringe conservative group for five years; never gave one order or made one decision about national guard; was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it. Went to six colleges in six years (reported)? It keeps getting better and better.

Parker's blurry vision
Parker seems to be studying the individual brushstrokes so intently that she does not see the beauty of the painting. As such, she’s gotten an awful lot wrong in reading the GOP convention.

First off, McCain didn’t pick Gov. Palin BECAUSE she’s a she. Oh sure, it’s not a bad idea to try to peel off a few voters who were enamored of Hillary strictly on the basis of her sex, but if you make that a primary motivation, it falls flat. We love Sarah because she is the new face of conservatism – straight outta the bottle, the way our boy Ronnie used to swig it. When you have Michael Reagan, of all people, gushing about how she is the reincarnation of his father, you’re on to something good, and it doesn’t matter whether she won a state basketball title playing for the girls’ or the boys’ team.

Parker picks another bone by remarking about the age of Republican conventioneers. Well, that speaks to a basic truth about political views in general. Young people, who in larger numbers think the whole world needs fixing and they’re just the ones to do it, will tend to gravitate toward the philosophy that advocates wrecking the old world and starting anew – liberalism. It’s when people grow up and realize that there’s nothing wrong with the way our institutions have evolved, so long as the power of the manipulators is checked, that they find conservatism. We’re not the party of the old – just the mature.

Maybe Kat just needs a change in her prescription lenses

The 2 Demo Witches on the Left Coast
Are silent and that is too bad. I can hardly wait until Bozo Boxer or Femnazi Pelosi opens their yap to critize Sarah! The Barracuda will move in for the kill and eat them and their young for lunch.
MCCAIN-PALIN 2008 - Say it LOUD! BIG and PROUD!

A GOP female governor who is

pro-abortion made an interesting point about Palin and women. She made the point that if Sarah is not elected VP women will have to wait at least eight more years before they see a woman elected to national office.

She indicated that most women are not single-issue voters, i.e. voting only on a candidate's position on legalized abortion.

Pregnant daughter is NOT over the top.
It's just the normal hypocrisy of the MSM.

Lets see... impregnated without being married outside the continental United States at the young age of 17. Later to marry the father and give birth at age 18.

News worthy? Sure is! And doubly so!

So how come the MSM only mentions Palin's daughter, and leaves out Obama's mama?

Sarah rocks!
We're so proud of her here at home. You folks haven't seen anything yet... like Todd says, "Just try to stay out of her way". She's more than amazing.

GOOOOOOOOOO SARAH!!!

Palin's Not Your Ticket To Victory
Wednesday's convention reminded me of the Nuremburg party rallies - a demonstration of open and obvious hate and condescension. Palin's attitude and demogogic speech was just like Adolf - and Giuliani made a very good Hermann Goering. The only thing missing were some good German bands and a final singing of "Die Fahne hoch..." If this is the example of "small town values" be afraid, be VERY afraid.

Palin is an ultra-right wingnut - a Floyd Turbo in skirts. She will drive independents and Republican moderates to the Democratic ticket in droves. Beat your tribal drums all you want - you people are going to lose big time on November 4th.

conservative
oh yes, someone who left a town of 5000 with a debt of $20 million. thank you, this is the fiscal conservative i have been waiting for. she's very much in the mold of George W who added 3.3 trillion in debt in just eight years to the 5.7 trillion we racked up in the previous 225 years. thank God we ended up with him rather than those high spending liberals.

Who's the nut?
Let's see Wolfgang, you just compared Sarah Palin to Hitler and Giuliani to Goering. Yeah, me thinks thou dost protest too much.

Palin may not be middle of the road, but if you think she's anything like Hitler, than she's a lot closer to the middle than you are. If we should be scared of anyone, its you not her.

illegals
I didn't hear one word in either convention about illegal immigration. This is McCain's weakest issue. What does he intend to do about it? He and Palin need to come up with a game plan before the debates as to how stop these border jumpers from murdering any more innocent people.

There must be swift and severe punishment. Deportation doesn't seem to be working. God knows Obama will welcome them with open arms.

Question for the left to ponder
How is Joe Biden going to prepare to take on Sarah Palin in the VP debate??

The myth of the aging GOP
Personally, I know quite a few "young Republicans" even in my True Blue-State of Minnesota. I'm not (quite) over the hill myself. Deal is, young Republicans have these things called JOBS which require our attendance; we don't have time to be traipsing off to political conventions to help lower the median age.

Why
Have we not seen Palin in a single unscripted moment since she was picked?? Not even at Phyllis Schafly's event!

When will Palin give an interview?

HP
Don't forget--not only did she leave a town with a debt of $20 (it had no debt when she came into a town), that debt was due mostly to a sports complex she had built that has CONTINUED to be a revenue sink for Wasilla.

People on the city council recommended that she build a wastewater treatment plant instead of a stadium, but she pushed that stadium through. Not even the $27 million she got in federal earmarks was enough to cover all the wasteful spending in Wasilla during her tenure.

correction
$20 million, not $20.

Wolfgang
Thank you for sharing your lack of knowledge about World War 2 history with us. Now we know we can ignore you.

The Nazis started as the National Socialists - does that sound familiar to you? It should because that is what your own party is turning into. Just witness all the hysterical lies being told by the MSM to cover the sorry rears of the Dim-o-crat party. Goebbels would indeed be proud of the MSM.

By the way, I am guessing you did not know that when Hitler was starting to rearm Germany, Poland saw what was happening and tried to get France and Britain to help in disarming Germany and deposing Hitler, even if it meant invading Germany again. France and Britain were both tired of war and refused. Think what could have happened if Germany had been disarmed and Hitler sent packing. Of course the liberals of today would have screamed about Poland, France, and Britain invading a soverign country. (sound familiar?) I'm sure your party also would have leapt to Hitler's defense. Liberals in America at the time already had a love affair with both Hitler and Mussolini - especially Mussolini!

At last I can vote w/a clear conscience
Wow!!! What I saw last night was just how much these two candidates and their families have committed personally in their lives to this country, with true heartfelt loving service not only in the USA, but all around the world. I had no idea that Cindy McCain was doing so much work for the good of ALL PEOPLE IN THE USA AND THE WORLD, and I was blown away with a sense of patriotism that I have not felt since Ronald Reagan.
Both candidates with sons in the service, and their families giving of themselves selflessly to better our country and serve others in the world.
I am very proud to vote for these folks who already make a huge daily difference in our world by example. As a famous 'dem' once said...."Ask not what your country can do for you...ask what you can do for your country" Seems the other side is saying the opposite of that famous piece, and their record...which isn't much, does not show me service to the USA or the world like the McCain/Palin ticket has.
I guess I cannot compare these apples and oranges, because I don't see the same service and sacrifice from Obama/Biden that I do from the McCain/Palin ticket. Obama & Biden do tons of complaining about how terrible everything is, yet they don't have any real solutions besides taking more of my hard earned ca$h. I am looking at the Obama and Biden records searching for what they do for the good of ALL here in the USA and the world, and I just don't see it...AT ALL.
Where is their service and sacrifice to country besides their own little neighborhood and communities? Has Michelle Obama served others out in the world like Cindy, or just helped her own community?
When it comes to the solid feeling of safety and security and commitment in America, I will feel more safe and secure with a REAL commander in chief at the wheel who holds our country first. And what a support system behind them! I will be so very proud to cast my vote for the right party, McCain and Palin!!!

Stearman's Historical Ignorance
Sir - your pompous ignorance says it all. If you want to argue history, then know the facts. The original members of the NDSAP were right wing in the extreme - many were former and ongoing Freikorps members - a group that was anything but left-of-center in political orientation. And read up on your Polish history - Pilsudski's government signed a 1934 mutual nonaggression pact with Germany - in recognition that even then the Polish Army could not fight a two-front war and recognizing that the far more dangerous enemey was the Soviet Union. You Floyd Turbo-types are downright frightening.

False Sense of Power
I've jumped on this bandwagon in terms of admiration for a fresh face, a fresh voice, maybe even a more hopeful future.

On C-SPANN yesterday, Michael Scheuer, a Jordanian neocon and Peter Bergen presented on al-Qaeda. If one quarter of this discussion is true, our long term prospects are not helped by either candidate--though, again, Palin, with 30 years ahead of her, offers hope for real change in our energy/foreign policy.

We have GOT to get our obnoxious hides out of the Arabian Penisnsula--not to mention half a dozen other spots where our vital interests are nada, nothing. Our meddling, oil-addicted ways have been our potential self-destruction. One of the panelists broke down the percentages. He had the names and countries of some 300 suicide bombers--these kids come from so-called "friends" or ours--Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, etc. Why are they so angry?

Why doesn't anyone except for Buchanan, Pape, Scheuer, Novak, Peters and a few others bring these facts into the light of day?

Scheuer's "Marching Toward Hell" should be read by anyone who has doubted for one minute whether the tail isn't wagging the dog in our "friendship" with Israel.

Hey OBAMBIE TROLLERS!
First Sarah Palin kicked your butt...

Last night John McCain kicked your butt..

and now your candidate and all his sexist surrogates are out trying to destroy Sarah Palin...

This after the Obambies went out of ther way to destroy Hillary and even managed to tarnish Geraldine Ferraro as a racist...

You people are despicable and your candidate of change is a disgusting incompetent...

McCain LOVES this country and your candidate hates America...

The American people know authenticity when they see it...

And Obama - with his styrofoam pillars and adoring (m)ASSES - is phony as a plug nickel...

You and your candidate are finished...

Linda
I don't think Michelle Obama has stolen drugs from any of the charities she worked with.

And also, conservatives have a fundamental disagreement with themselves...are the Obamas elitists, or not? Because if they are, then how are poor people in Chicago 'their own community'?

Also, you extoll country first, but then you disparage working for the good of your own country, instead of jet-setting about to do high profile charity work like Cindy...you're saying two things at once.

I don't question McCain's dedication to this country, I really don't. Palin I have a bit more doubt about--up until she ran for Governor, her husband was a member of a secessionist party, whose founder said he hated American and prayed he wouldn't have to be buried under it's flag (he didn't get his wish, as he was killed last year in a plastics explosives deal gone bad). Palin attended two conventions of this party. Their motto is 'Alaska First. Alaska Always.'

Also, her son only joined the military to avoid criminal prosecution after vandalizing school buses-shutting down the schools for the day and causing $10,000 in damage. I STILL respect his service and pray for his safe return, but I am not sure we should lionize people when their kids join the military to avoid the clink.

Dear Jack in Texas

Once or twice today I saw posts from you that I found OK, if not really cool. You're wasting that capital here.

Because; we have never sent EVEN ONE --Not one obnoxious hide anywhere from our country. We sent good soldiers from the Land of the Free. We sent them as fighters, not as obnoxious representatives of this country. It's YOU who are the obnoxious and clueless hide, spouting this BS. I have little doubt you have NO CLUE what the hell you're talking about. We might as well be talking with Cindy Sheehan. Though at least to her credit, she lost her son fighting for our country.

We definitely do have national interests where her son and so many more Americans gave their lives; despite what you and other America haters may say. Stop shaming the state of Texas with your low intelligence on display.

Journalistic Rigor
"Some have criticized McCain for cynically selecting a woman only to try to attract former Hillary Clinton supporters. Obviously, there's some truth to that." Ms. Parker, what is the basis for this statement? I would have thought that your English /Journalism professors would have broken you of the habit of writing like this. This is the type of thinking and writing for which contemporary journalists have come to be so disliked.

Journalism 101
To MD-KP is an opinion writer and this is an opinion piece. That statement is an opinion. Coming from her, it is an opinion that I agree with and is to a large degree, self-evident to anyone that has been following Republican politics for the last several months.

hypocrisy on "family values"
An earlier note blamed Barack because his parents didn't marry until they were pregnant with him. Barack had no control over what happened before he was born.

Sarah Palin was pregnant when she married her husband -- supposedly they eloped to save money, turns out now there was another reason for a quick marriage. (Married 8-29-88, Track was born 4-20-89). Sarah controlled the timing of her own pregnancy and marriage.

Sarah also ran the household Bristol was living in when Bristol became pregnant. Sarah is STILL against "explicit sex ed," which can prevent teenage pregnancies, such as the one in her own home. As for "they plan to get married," well, it hasn't happened yet.

Polar Bears
Did you know that Sarah Palin tried to get Polar Bears off the endangered animals list, so she could drill for oil off the coast of Alaska?

Personally, this makes me slump in dismay. Perhaps we should elect someone from the Indepent Party.

Sarah Palin
Where I grew up we were short on lipstick but we knew if you put silk on a goat it was still a goat... Unfortunately for McCain he has backed the wrong person. Sarah Palin may be great for Alaska but for the lower 48 she is a dud... no matter what way you cut it. This has nothing to do with small town values .. it has to do with big brain capacity.

Ms Parker you are seriously backpedaling
All of this praise for the woman who should do her country a favor and back out of this race? Come on now, you know you were correct in your position that Palin is NOT in any way qualified for this position? Why the backpedaling? Did you get too much for expressing the truth?

Big Difference
Indeed, why the backpedaling tone.Suddenly, all those starry-eyed words for Palin. Your instincts were right the first time around. There's a big difference between the two. One inspires the lowest instincts in people and is a rabble-rouser; the other inspires the best and evokes the citizens' highest aspirations. That should be pretty obvious by now. You're singing somewhat off-key with this one.
