Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Oh, for a good riposte.

Barack Obama's levity-free reaction to the now-famous New Yorker cartoon leaves one reluctantly wondering: Is he humor-challenged? Perchance, does he take himself too seriously for a nation of wits and wags?

So soaring has been Obama's rhetoric and so dazzling his smile that we've missed the possibility that the Illinois senator is less the lanky rock star and more the purse-lipped church lady, clucking his tongue in disapproval of the chuckling masses.

His campaign's angry reaction to the magazine cover shows a stunning lack of political dexterity. It wasn't always so.

In earlier days, Obama was self-deprecating and light of touch. But something happens as people get closer to Washington, as Obama himself has pointed out in other contexts. A popular story that Obama tells concerns a Las Vegas debate during which he was asked about his weaknesses.

Obama answered that he has trouble keeping up with paper, that his desk is a mess. OK, it wasn't knee-slapping hilarious, but it was honest and, therefore, endearing. A real answer from a real person.

In contrast, two of Obama's contenders, both Washington veterans, responded to the same question with the kind of painful earnestness that makes dogs cynical. As Obama recounts it, one of them said his biggest weakness was that "I'm just so passionate about helping poor people." The other said, "I'm just so impatient to help the American people solve their problems."

Ooph.

Obama continues the story: "So then I realize, well, I wish I'd gone last and then I would have known." (Laughter, applause.) "I'm stupid that way, I thought that when they asked what your biggest weakness was, they asked what your biggest weakness was. And now I know that my biggest weakness is I like to help old ladies across the street."

Now, that's funny. And there's a reason the other two candidates -- John "passionate" Edwards and Hillary "impatient" Clinton -- aren't leading the Democratic ticket.

Obama's self-deprecation was his most charming bit, but lately he is, well, less charming. He and his wife seem more like a finger-wagging principal and teacher tag team, with Michelle Obama promising that her husband will make us work harder when he becomes president. You get the feeling that should the Obamas take over, we'll all be staying after school. They used to call that detention.

Of course, John McCain isn't exactly a merchant of mirth. He didn't like the cartoon either, or so he said. Although his usual disregard for politically correct reverence is refreshing, his humor often seems not offbeat, but off-a-beat. Spontaneous jokes, such as his singing "Bomb-Iran-bomb-bomb-bomb," are actually less funny than the fact of his telling (or performing) them. Does he get it?

When I hear McCain "being funny," I'm reminded of a booklet of after-dinner jokes my father compiled to help pay his college tuition. The World War II-vintage jokes simply aren't amusing anymore. They belong to another time and place, another set of cultural markers, the common understanding of which is crucial to humor.

What's missing -- and much missed -- are the timeless, biting quips of politicians past who put the "rip" in riposte. Classy, biting and pandering to no one, these elder statesmen knew something about language -- and American attitudes -- that we seem to have forgotten.

Chris Lamb, a College of Charleston (S.C.) journalism professor and cartoon historian, reminds us with his recent political-comeback collection, "I'll Be Sober in the Morning," that the wicked retort is invariably more effective than righteous indignation. A couple of sample anecdotes:

Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, told that he couldn't play golf at a Chevy Chase, Md., country club because it was restricted, replied: "I'm only half Jewish, so can't I play nine holes?"

Sa-wish.

U.N. Ambassador Adlai Stevenson was giving a speech in Dallas when a heckler demanded to know the ambassador's beliefs. Replied Stevenson: "I believe in the forgiveness of sin and the redemption of ignorance."

Sublime.

There's no better tonic -- nor better defuser of enemy bombs -- than humor. How refreshing it would have been had Obama merely pointed to the New Yorker cartoon and said: "He didn't get my ears right."

With a deft trip off the tongue, the cartoon and the baseless controversy would have been rendered impotent, revealed as what they were: laughable.

It's not too late. Humor us.

She has a way to sum up everything everyone is thinking.

New Yorker cover

Ms. Parker,
You certainly have a right to your opinion about the cover on the New Yorker, but I think you are a bit hard on those of us who think it was absolutely despicable. I'm quite aware that political cartoons tend to be satirical and overblown "caricatures". What bothers me is that many persons, including you, don't seem to recognize a really bad and insensitive editiorial production when you see it. Satire - "Sarcasm, irony, or wit used to ridicule or expose abuses or follies." Do we really need someone ridiculing the first black man to have guts enough to run for president in this sick nation??? Just what personal abuse or folly of Obama's is his or his wife's that "needed to be exposed" by that cover? Supporting terrorism? Ties to Bin Laden? Being a practicing Muslim? I'm not even an Obama supporter, However, I am 80 years old and know the art of sarcasm, irony, and wit when I see them. Believe me, this isn't it, and you're off base when you mock the protest of it.

Affirmative Action and "accomplishment"
When discussing the Obamas' achievements, the media always cites the fact that they went from humble beginnings to attend Ivy League universities.

The problem is that they got into these prestigious schools based on a much lower standard than the level of excellence usually required.

It would be like the president claiming to be a major league baseball player because he gets to throw the first pitch every year.

Right on!
Ms. Parker makes an excellent point. BHO's failure to poke fun at the New Yorker cover is a testament to his own empti-suitedness. The Senator is simply an empty vessel to be filled with and spout liberal PC drivel whenever it seems appropriate, which of course is always.

Re: Reply #39????
"another right-wing desperate hack-job"

Paul, right before you went into your left-wing apoplexia over the cover did you happen to notice the big black letters at the top that say "The New Yorker". There not really known as a bastion of conservatism, even when compared to Pravda! Maybe the vast right-wing conspiracy got G. Gordon out of mothballs to break in a reset the cover graphics.

Element of truth
Obama and wife Angela, oops Michelle, can't laugh because the cover is too close to the truth they want to hide.

Funny how conservatives can joke about their candidates AND even laugh at the possiblility of a Marxist communist Obamination presidency, but liberals short circuit.

Remember, Obama has been raised in the self esteem, victimhood, diversity rules, school system of the past 25 years so no wonder he has no sense of humor. You are not allowed to say anything that would hurt his feelings, refer to his race (or the color black), or speak against the religious god of diversity. No humor in any of that.

NEW GOD
GRAND SET:

Sunny Day with soft balmy breeze

Different Field: Slender nymphs wearing gossamer tunics spread floral ambrosia to the breeze so the floral scent absorbs the host of adoring love

Main Field: Cast of thousands kowtowed with heads touching the ground. Masters wearing Harvard Crimson Gowns pace through the throng keeping those bent down in position.

Close Focus: Master Priest with a golden miter adorned with a bejeweled “O” comes forth:

“””””” RAISE YOUR HEADS – LIFT YOUR ARMS “””””””

”””””””” OAH – BAAAH – MAH “””””””””””

”””””””” OAH – BAAAH – MAH “””””””””””

”””””””” OAH – BAAAH – MAH “””””””””””

Different Close Focus: Descending unto all comes forth the New God:

”””””””” OAH – BAAAH – MAH “””””””””””

I remember...
at the start of the primaries when he was whining because someone commented on his ears!! As I recall Maureen Dowd told him to get over himself and toughen up.

Guess he didn't listen because he has been whining ever since.

Cover is easy to see through
The first thought ot come to mind when I saw that cover was, "another right-wing desperate hack-job". After years of this kind of stuff, it's really easy to see through.

HUMORLESS PRIG
HUMORLESS PRIG
The Obama Cult requires a 10-cent IQ.

Heard excerpts from the Larry King interview last night.. Here we have an excellent opportunity for the "I don't take myself too seriously!" Barack "Barry" Hussain bin O'BoyToy (nee: Obama) to let it all out and just laugh. The topic is a cartoon and this guy sounds like he just lost his collection of Hari-Kari Knives.

I have written this before on TH, this guy is a humorless prig. There is not a legitimate laugh or joke about this guy. All he is is a case of serious aelf judgement bordering on mental illness.

Remember me when I wrote; George Washington used to take out his false teeth for a communal laugh at the dinner table, Abraham Lincoln liked racy French girl jokes, Teddy Roosevelt acting and making mug faces, George Bush gusting around with the 20 year olds at the Air Force Academy.

Barack "Barry" Hussain bin O'BoomBox (nee: Obama) "You know, I never take myself too seriously!" - pathetic.

---------------------------------------------
The O'BoyToy is cornering the market on American Flags but none call it "Jingoism".

ObamaCrats are all Hypocrites "HypoCrats"

Delightful
It is delightful to read the increasingly hysterical articles and comments on Obama.

Anyone who upsets the Bush apologists, Neo-Con freaks and "Christian" this much is going to be one terrific President.

Sense of Humor?- The American Ayatollah?
I would bet that "Barrack The Audacious and Articulate",-"The Hope Pope" [DOPE] and --Michelle, "The Eternally Pi$$ed", [who's facial expression makes her seem like she SMELLS a Pile o "$heet" Somewhere Really Close By], Laugh all the way to the White House, {AND the Bank!!} This Commie/Socialist-Elite Montebank, and his "Insignificant OTHER will Play the RACE card, and "Great White-American Guilt" card, Laughing all the way into the History Books.

Didn't get my ears right
What a great article.

I think what we see in Mr. Obama is someone who depends on his staffers and speech writers for everything of substance. All he delivers is the delivery and the nice big smile.

Oh, is Juan still running for President?
Reading stuff here, and reading the papers, you'd think Obama was the only candidate running to be POTUS.

God forbid! McCain should make some noise, like maybe "Drill, Drill, Drill"!

Give us Something, please, John.

Frog, that's perfectly Churchillian!
"Another quote I've heard attributed to Churchill was where a woman says, "Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your drink." Churchill replied, "Madame, if you were my wife, I would drink it." Now THAT's ballsy and funny!"

That's perfectly Churchillian, what a glorious ba*stard Winston was. Where is he now that we NEED him so badly? Or someone like him?

FROG
I have no idea what you are talking about. I mentioned his appearance on Larry King, hardly a private conversation between me and him. Parker, in the column above, gives an example of his sense of humor. He has also made appearances on the Jon Stewart show and Stephen Colbert in which he exhibits his wit, as well as on the Letterman show. And all of this before the silly, Obama has no sense of humor nonsense.

What you seem to mean is that you won't bother to listen to Obama but will accept any criticism opponents make of him. But if you are jealous of my inside information about Obama which is based on my actually paying attention to what he says, rather than forming my opinion from right wing critics, then it would be easy for you to get that kind of inside information as well.

"Humorously challenged"
Some years ago the comic strip "Beetle Bailey" came under criticism for its depiction of Miss Buxley. Feminists accused the comic strip of demeaning women and promoting sexual harassment. In succeeding years, other special interest groups attacked the strip, saying it gave a negative depiction of Asians, blacks, bald people, fat people, and assorted other matters.

Mort Walker, the creator of "Beetle Bailey", came up with a politically-correct term for his critics. He called them the "humorously challenged."

I think Barack Obama must be applying for membership in that group.

Obama takes himself too seriously?

How could anyone think that? Just because he believes small town and rural Americans love God and keep guns because they are frustrated with government; and he wants innocent survivors of abortion to be murdered through neglect; and, he thinks prenancy is a punishment; and, he has listened to hatred preached in his church for 20 years; and, it is embarrassing how many Americans speak only english; what is there to laugh at? Are his defiant same-sex sodomite supporters laughing? about American culture? Are his communist sympathizing buddies laughing? Are his radical feminist proponent of murder laughing?

He would not dare laugh with supporters like his. They are totally humourless.

John Doe, you may be correct ...
on WC Fields. I know I read somewhere that the quote was attributed to Churchill, by I could understand if it was WC Fields. Another quote I've heard attributed to Churchill was where a woman says, "Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your drink." Churchill replied, "Madame, if you were my wife, I would drink it." Not THAT's ballsy and funny!

Frog, W.C. Fields?
I believe responded when a woman accosted him "Sir, you are drunk!" W.C. said, "Yes, and you are ugly. However, in the morning I shall be sober".

On of the GREAT ripostes of all time!

McLame defended Obambi
Why?

All McLame had to do was deflect any questions. It's not up to him to protect 'Bama.

Maybe Juan wants to be bambi's VP.

goatlocker....
Man, you gotta give a spew alert when you post a joke like that one!

BHO
and mean spirited hags acting in contravention to their own "pacifist" and sissified selves. Maybe if we leash their sharp tongues on the terrorists they will just tremble themselves to death. BHO has been funny but he's losing it.

Ohh, and Ms. Parker, thanks for the ...
reminder about the Churchill Quote, "I'll be sober in the morning." Now Churchill, from what I've read, that was a man with a sharp wit and the cajones to use it.

From now on, I'm only going to believe..
just what I hear coming from Obama's mouth. Nothing written by some commentator or some other spokesman will do. It has to come from Obama's mouth only. Well, unless of course the person doing the reporting can present evidence that it came from Obama himself. Maybe something like some stone tablets or something.

"I present to you these 15 comma....(one tablet falls and shatters) these 10 commandments from Lord Obama...."

Since you seem to know him so well, ...
Lon, next time you talk to Barry O, ask him what he thought and then you can give us a direct quote. No sense us having to hear it from some spokesperson, as if they speak for BO. I mean c'mon, who do these spokespeople think they are anyway? Gawsh, speaking for Obama, harumph!

My prediction
Obama will soon appear on Saturday Night Live or another comedy show to counter the current remarks that he is humorless. Heck, the master of image reinventing may even come out with his own joke book--"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House."

Great article

The really funny thing is, ...
not ha-ha funny, but sad funny, is that liberals love to tag conservatives as mean spirited. Who have been the ones to lampoon Bush and morph him into a monkey? No attempt at humor there, just pure hatred and animosity. Mean spirited liberal hags!

good column
It is interesting that most of the commentators did not seem to read the whole thing.

Obama has shown he has a good sense of humor. But his campaign responded ham-handedly to this cartoon. Of course this cartoon did not exactly present an occassion for a riposte, which is a response to a direct comment. And from what I hear, Obama responded properly in an interview with Larry King.

But he let outrage on the part of his spokesman and his supporters become the story. And that is a tactical mistake because it lets his opponents push this ludicrous idea that he has no sense of humor. And the people who are most vulnerable to such stories will be the people who do not follow him closely and so have little basis for knowing better.

Ahhh, but then we have you, Roy....
to enlighten us and show us the error of our ways. Thank you, thank you, Roy for blessing us with your time and illustrating how us fire breathing heathens err in our understanding of politics, life, et al.

You are truly inspiring!

Of course he got it...
he's just trying to get as much mileage as he can out of it.

Unfortunately, many people will vote for him because he is the 'victim' of 'racist' attacks.

Life in the liberal universe
I think we'd better get used to the humor-free life that most liberals want us to have. Oh well, maybe in eight more years, when the economy is in a complete shambles, will we get rid of some of these democrats, but i doubt it.

Reason 0blahma's humour-sense absent
Because 0blahma IS a joke!

My fear is
(great article, by the way) is this new talk of inner-city riots if Obama doesn't get elected - like the O.J. riots, but on a larger scale.

When is the last time anyone was convicted for "Inciting to Riot" or "Treason"? Anybody know?

I can hear the screams already - "Election Stolen" - "Racists!" as cities burn.

Could Bin Laden cause more destruction?

MRCMRC
Amazing. A one word post. One single word, and yet, as is always the case in your longer posts: No capitalization, no punctuation, no indication of a point trying to be made, and, above all, no sense. You are remarkably consistent.

Obama's problem
Rather than this being a nation of wits and wags, my perception is growing stronger that we are merely a nation of drips and drags

The problem with Obama is
that he's gotten to the point where he considers criticism of him, his wife and his policies to be blasphemy.

McCain...
...has the American style sense of humor. Where we can joke and laff at things that really can be life or death. But a lot of the new pansified Americans can't understand this.

Hell...I ain't got time to bleed.

You don't know who you are
Context is everything in humor. McCain telling the ape-rape joke could be funny in some bizaar context, but not when it's repeated publicly years later.

The New Yorker cover is funny, and edgy, in context of the readership. But lots of folks will see it who take it seriously, who won't get it as a joke. It's not funny that our last election was decided by people who believed the myths of WMD and a 911-Saddam connection.

There are enough hatefilled, ignorant people out there who look for any excuse to vote against someone out of bigotry-- some of them are probably reading TH every day.

answer
no

No Humor in Messiahs
Conservatives are happy that he doesn't have a sense of humor about himself because that is the one missing dimension in his persona--a self-deprecating humor that illustrates, hey, he is just like you and me. If he did he would cakewalk to the presidency. Instead one gets the feeling he actually believes in the heroic, superhuman image that his wife and followers are spinning.

A Pretty Good Joke
I've heard attributed to John McCain:

You know why Chelsea Clinton is so homely? Because Janet Reno is her real father.

Now that's a good joke. And not because Chelsea is really homely - she's not (hold your fire, liberals). I think she's reasonably attractive, and maost red-blooded males would undoubtedly agree.

But the implications about Reno and Hillary - well, that's thigh slapping funny.

So I would say McCain does have a pretty good sailor's sense of humor (but I am admittedly biased).

here's what's funny
Obama doesn't speak French.

Why
Why do people think Obama's rhetoric is "so dazzling"? He has a fairly resonable speech writer, but can't talk without a teleprompter.

And if you actually listen, he doesn't say much of anything.

Maybe he just seems like a great speaker compared to other recent candidates...

Coming to a theater near you!
A deadly boring presidential candidate comes to town...

Great speech-maker but...

No sesnse of humor..

He aims to put an end to anyone who dares joke about him...(but he's not secretly a Muslim)

Opening in a theater near you...

The OBAMA-NATOR

Make fun of him at your own risk...

You'll die laughing... or at least extra get community service hours.

The Obama-Nator!

Obama has no sense of...
humor, and that's not funny!

It also probably means that is secretly a Muslim afterall, because they have no sense of humor either.

Just ask Salman Rushdie. Gee did you notice his name is spelled: RUSH - DIE! Yikes!
