Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- "Damn you and the likes of you to the bowels of hell, you ignorant racist bastard!"

So wrote an outraged Muslim to political cartoonist Doug Marlette a few years ago after he drew a cartoon featuring the prophet Muhammad.

Tens of thousands of Muslims bellowed, blogged and clogged until servers collapsed with hate mail and death threats.

No cartoon -- or cartoonist -- would go unpunished.

Here we go again.

Similar passions are being expressed this week in response to another cartoon, this time on the cover of the liberal-leaning New Yorker magazine. And this time, those railing against an "offensive" image are not religious fundamentalists of the far right, but political secularists of the far left.

Without even a wink at satire, the same righteous literal-mindedness that we tend to associate with the unenlightened has found expression among those who regard themselves as the most enlightened.

The cartoon prompting this latest run on smelling salts features Barack and Michelle Obama in the Oval Office. The senator, dressed in Muslim garb, is fist-bumping his wife, who sports an Angela Davis afro and wears a rifle slung over her shoulder. An American flag burns in the fireplace, over which hangs a portrait of someone resembling Osama bin Laden.

Get it? The play on exaggerated stereotypes? The un-nuanced spoofing of Americanus Ignoramus? But no.

Oh, the outrage. It's racist! shouts the left. It's stereotyping! Well, duh, cartoons are like that. It's feeding the ignorant misperceptions of the loony right!

As Marlette would say: "Puh-leez."

The intent of the illustration should be clear to anyone attuned to current events. Cartoonist Barry Blitt was poking fun at all the rumors and fearsome phobias circulating about the Obamas among a certain contingent. We know who they are.

Viral e-mails claim, for instance, that Obama is a Muslim; that Obama was sworn into the Senate using a Koran instead of a Bible; that Obama isn't a patriot because he refuses to wear a flag pin or put his hand over his heart during the national anthem; that Michelle Obama is militantly anti-American. And so on.

All these claims have been clarified and/or refuted for anyone curious enough to seek the truth. Even so, a certain percentage of people will continue to believe what they choose no matter what.

In any case, those about whom the outraged presumably are most concerned are: (1) unlikely to pick up a New Yorker; (2) unlikely to be swayed or disabused of their preconceptions. So what exactly are they worried about?

That yahoos just passing by a newsstand will see those images and have their paranoid suspicions confirmed?

Such is elitism at its most self-destructive. Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist and former New Yorker staffer, put it nicely to the San Francisco Chronicle: "The essence of what they're saying is, 'I get it, but I don't trust the people in Kansas to get it.'"

Sanitizing satire either to buffer the sensitivities of those who consider themselves more highly evolved -- or to withhold kindling from those deemed less sophisticated -- is all of a piece.

Ignorance is the common denominator.

While one strain of ignorance likely springs from misinformation or a lack of educated knowledge, the other is more virulent by virtue of its opposite circumstances.

For his part, Obama may be missing a Sister Souljah opportunity to demonstrate both his smarts and his common sense. His campaign has called The New Yorker cover "tasteless and offensive." John McCain chimed in with "totally inappropriate."

Harrumph, harrumph, harrumph.

Far more important than anyone's feelings -- and Obama surely knows this -- is freedom of expression. Yet those who are objecting to the cover apparently think that only certain ideas should be expressed. And that some portion of conservative America is too stupid to get it.

Marlette, who died prematurely a year ago in a freak accident that robbed the world of his necessary voice, would say that we don't need protection from offensive words and images. Instead, he would insist that we need protection from those who would censor ideas they find objectionable and whose literal minds make common cause with fascist fundamentalists everywhere.

In the final calculation, unsophisticated yahoos, to the extent they really are, pose a lesser threat to the nation than an elitist intelligentsia convinced it knows what's best for the rest.

Amen, Sister
I kind of lean to the left most of the time, but I try to remain as neutral as possible. And I thought the cover was funny as heck. It pokes fun equally at both sides, such as the hard-left worshipers who follow Obama like a false diety and claim that this kind of satire will harm Obama more than help, or the original target of the cartoon, the WorldNetDaily crowd that really believes the kind of nonsense that Obama is a secret Muslim (Clearly, the Jeremiah Wright controversey should have put those rumours to rest.)
By the way, thanks for the mention of Doug Marlette, who will trully be missed because we need his type of bitting satire now more than ever. And ditto the shout-out to Art Speigleman, who himself was the subject of his own mini-Mark Steyn-style controversey in Canada because he wrote an article critiquing the so-called "offending" Danish cartoons that portrayed Mohammed because the article included the carttons (Ironically, he did find one offending cartoon from the batch mainly because it was poorly drawn and anti-semetic rather than anti-Muslim.)

-"Maus is in the house!"
-Art Speigleman, guest-staring on The Simpsons, season 19.

Is everyone brain dead?
This brilliant satire had the desired effect for the bottom line is that Obama derived the maximum possible benefit, didn't he? A groundswell of OOH and AHH over Poor Baby Obama and his fist bumping wife.

What was the effect? First, it gave the Obama supporters an opportunity to place the blame for all the "smearing" on the right wing when, in fact, most of it arose out of the Clinton Camp.

Second, it even got McCain to take sides with Obama, he too decried the New Yorker cover.

Anyone that think this and Jesse Jackson's gaffe weren't to Obama's advantage is naive to the MAX..........this is all part of the Grand Strategy.........

McCain won't play the game so they'll CREATE it for him.......and he bought it.

Are the rest of you buying it too?

from what I've read
It was really supposed to be an indictment of the mainstream media who have been hyping these stories of Obama being a Muslim, swearing in on the Koran (that was the other black guy, from Minnesota, whose name escapes me at this late hour - I know the blacks all look alike to these people), not wearing the pin, etc.

Hey, don't leave the Satiremeister...
...out of the conversation!

The brilliant candidate of the Democrat Party for U.S. Senate from my state, Al Franken, uses the fact that he is/was a satirist as an excuse for anything offensive that comes out of his mouth.

C'mon folks, IT'S ALL SATIRE! Lighten up! Life is a comedy routine, and evidently the U.S. Senate is a stage. Can somebody please keep us Minnesotans (yeah, we're the idiots who enabled Jesse Ventura to think he started a "revolution") from committing ANOTHER political gaffe??

This is satire?
The cartoon .... Barack and Michelle Obama in the Oval Office. The senator, dressed in Muslim garb, is fist-bumping his wife, who sports an Angela Davis afro and wears a rifle slung over her shoulder. An American flag burns in the fireplace, over which hangs a portrait of someone resembling Osama bin Laden.
===
Darn, here I was thinking they finally showed them for who they really are.

Is there no truth?
To hear all the howls, you might wonder if it is just a complaint about bad taste or something else.

Don't know about what the senator wears when he isn't campaigning, but I do know his wife has a low opinion of the U.S. She sounds a lot like the black socialist movement from the 60's.

He is a muslim, by name
If you leave Islam you must change your name and then you can be sentenced to death.
Barack and Obama are African muslim names Hussein is Arabic.

Barack Hussein Obama is 100% muslim according to Islamic culture and Sharia Law

Jeremiah Wright is a former muslim

Obama’s church posted a Hamas manifesto in the Trinity Church program last year

Wright’s affinity with Louis Farrakhan. Wright got his Masters degree in "Islam in West Africa"
I think Wrights church has muslims in attendance too.
Not positive if true or not, but I did read it there are some.
Why isn't the press digging into all this?
Its not like this guy wants to run a farm somewhere.

quote:
n his July 22, 2007, church bulletin, Wright reprinted an article by Mousa Abu Marzook, identified in the newsletter as a “deputy of the political bureau of Hamas.” A photo image of the newsletter was captured and posted today by the business blog BizzyBlog. The Hamas piece was first published by the Los Angeles Times, garnering the newspaper much criticism.

According to senior Israeli security officials, Marzook, who resides in Syria alongside Hamas chieftain Khaled Meshaal, is considered the “brains” behind Hamas, designing much of the terror group’s policies and ideology. Israel possesses what it says is a large volume of specific evidence that Marzook has been directly involved in calling for or planning scores of Hamas terrorist offensives, including deadly suicide bombings. He was also accused of attempting to set up a Hamas network in the U.S.

Refuted?
So, the author of this article tells us that Michelle Obama's knee-jerk anti-Americanism has been categorically "refuted".
Really?

Exactly WHEN and WHERE has it been refuted? Please give me your source.

Fatwah
The Barrack Hussien Obama ( Base ) issued a FATWAH on the New Yorker cartoon.
How ( stero ) - typical.....

Windshield Sticker
I would like to have a rendering by Doug Marlette of Muhammad with the bomb turbin on his head (similar to a calvin and hobbs sticker) so I could put it on the back windshield of my car. This way I could draw jihadist out from their hiding places!!
Having no sense of humor is a dangerous and deadly trait I see.

Call the WHAAAAAAAmbulance
is what we say in the racing world when a driver spends an inordinate amount of time bawling and flailing in an attempt to deflect attention from the stupid blunder that lost him th race and land it on someone who happened to be within three car lengths of him or at least on the same lap. In Mont Tremblant in 2007 this was Sebastien Bourdais, who accomplished the impossible feat of causing a French crowd to boo a French driver.

In this case, the WHAAAAAmbulance is coming for Obama and his Mommies who rush to his defence with cotton batting, bubble wrap and soft blankies to insulate the poor, frail tot from any criticism by a world filled with Bad Children!

Is Obama thinking he can bring his Mommie with him when he goes face to face with foreign terrorists? Does he really think Almadinijab is going to wilt and grovel when he shouts YOUARACIST!?

Inquiring minds are looking forward to watching that, from somewhre far away. Possibly Sweden.

The sad thing is
those, like Maher and Edwards, who have also been the subject of Liberal intolerance regarding Obama criticism, won't be able to connect the dots.

ask yourself this question
In the last week we have seen and heard
a) Jesse Jackson offering to make Barack Obama into a gelding. Much ado about nothing to be sure but BEAUCOUP PRESS COVERAGE!!! (And of course the fact that it occurred on the Reilly show only adds to the irony.) This gives bo the opportunity to act noble.

b) Now comes the sublimely ignorant cover on the new yorker. (SHOW ME THE MONEY!!)

For a good solid week these two NON-issues have dominated the "news". IOW there has been little or no talk of bo's positions on some issues and if THAT silly fact doesn't benefit the bo campaign I'm a muslim radical. (I'm a fat white Catholic). And also to be considered is the fact that this silliness keeps the race issue right out in front.

What I'm driving at is this: Does this not seem like a shell game?

And the question is this:

cui bono?

generally good column
Parker is right that the response from too many on the left has been humorless. And Spiegelman is right that that the criticism has been based on a belief that many Americans are stupid enough to believe these ridiculous rumors, when only a small percentage of the country is, and they were never going to vote for Obama anyway.

But Parker is a bit silly when she compares the outcry against the New Yorker with death threats over the Muhammed cartoons. Has she lost all sense of perspective?

And it is silly to pretend this is a liberal phenomenon. The WHAAAAmbulance that AudiR10 complains about is a cottage industry on the right. Would Brent Bozell have a job if not for his WHAAA columns?

Gandalf brings up the example of Bill Maher. But Maher tried for years to get Liberals to mount a campaign to silence him only to find himself losing his ABC show because he offended conservative sensibilities. It is unlikely he will forget which side is really into censoring its opponents.

And don't_tread_on_me reminds us that the rights respect for satire runs out when it is done by liberals.

n2win
You expressed an interest in obtaining a copy of the drawing of Mohammad with a bomb in his turban that stirred the huge controversy. I think you were referring to this cartoon:

http://www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/jyllands-p osten_cartoons/jyllandsposten_bombhead.jpg

The slight problem here is that the drawing is not by Doug Marlette. It is by Kurt Westergaard.

You can find all kinds of drawings by Doug Marlette here:

http://www.dougmarlette.com/

AudiR10 ...
Cut it out! My sides are hurting! I already jammed my shoulder playing sand volleyball. I don't need the additional pain from uncontrollable laughter!

I can just picture Obama with his finger in Ahmadinijab's face screamin', "YOUARACIST." What does Ahmadinijab do? Just what the Queen of Hearts commands: "Off with his head!"

It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

Joke is on the right.
So interesting that the one cartoon allowed to picture Obama in a negative light is actually described as a criticism of the far right. Will they be able to do a political cartoon that actually is critical of His Holiness?

McLame may actually win
if the only candidates the Dhimicruds can front are all crybaby-shills--especially if they get progressively worse, as they have since 2000!

Bob R
Have you noticed that Townhall routinely runs cartoons critical of Obama without there being any backlash? Where do you get this idea that noone can run cartoons critical of Obama?

What if?
The left is furious, and regardless of statements to the contrary, so is Obama and his campaign over the "cartoon" in the New Yorker. If the compassionate and oh-so-enlightened left can get in such a tizzy over a cartoon that was meant to lampoon the right, what reaction would they have had if the cartoon was on the cover of a conservative publication?

The left is hovering on the fringe of censorship with regard to their position on this well meaning cartoon. Had it appeared on the cover a conservative magazine, the editor would no doubt be receiving death threats at this point.

What is frightening is that those on the right are self-censoring for this very reason. Cartoon-gate, as this should be called, should be a wake-up call to the right as to just how successful the left has been in silencing their voices and their values.

Should the left, as is predicted, gain control of the House, the Senate, as well as the presidency, that silence you hear will be from the empty keyboards and printing presses of the right.

New Yorker Cover
I glad you (Parker)explained it to me. I was ready to subscribe to the magazine because I actually understood that cartoon. I thought it was good. I didn't know it was satire, which explains why I never understand the other cartoons in the New Yorker. I tnink that is why the Left is so upset. They don't understand them(cartoons)either.

2008 Pulitzer
For editorial cartooning should go to Blitt.

unity, comrades
Folks on the left are all the more upset because the cartoon was on a left-leaning rag. There can be no appearance of cracks in the ice, and certainly nothing that might confuse the clinging-to-their-guns-and-God types. All 'correct' media must carry pictures of the Obamaessiah looking angelic or presidential.

Both, if possible.

Kathleen Parker
Great analogy comparing Muslim outrage over cartoons and the current Leftist hysteria over the 'New Yorker' cover.

Could it be that the faithful are afraid of BO's family ties to radical Muslims/Marxists in Kenya resurfacing and ruining his chances of being elected POTUS?:
(see http://noiri.blogspot.com/2008/06/americas-new-first-famil y.html)

Or his community agitation er ah activism in Bill Ayer's organization?

Or Michelle's "tasteless" remarks about finally being proud of America?

Or BO's remarks intimating that terrorists will change 1400 years of murderous weltanschauung just by meetings?

cartoon
The same people that find same sex marriages O K and the sick Gay parades in San Francisco O K are more than likly to protest the cartoon. I find the cartoon not offensive, that's what polotions should expect as they are open season all the time.

OBAMA'S FAMILY TIES IN KENYA

Kathleen Parker's confusion
"And this time, those railing against an "offensive" image are not religious fundamentalists of the far right..."

Boy, has Parker got that wrong. They're obviously not 'of the far right', but of the 'far left' since they all support Hussein.

McCain...
..shud have just said "Well, I'm glad it wasn't me and Cindy in that cartoon.".

well after all
we are a bunch of rubes, just clingin' to our bibles. We can't order our arugula in spanish when in europe- how embarrassing! How could we possibly "get" the meaning of the New Yorker cover. I mean it's so sophisticated and all.

Reasonable People
Reasonable people have concerns that the Obamas are not primarily dedicated to American values. We are not kooks. To say that anything untoward that has been pointed out about Obama has been "refuted" is factually incorrect.

There appears to be some waking up going on in the media, but to hear a continuance of references to inferences made about his loyalties, based on his behavior and things he has said, is quite disappointing.

Jib Jab
If you have not yet seen the 2008 Jib Jab, head over to their web site and take a look at it. If Obama and his myrmidion are upset about this New Yorker colum, that video is going to make them burst out crying and run to their rooms.

P.S. If you are liberal, go anyway; it is an equal opportunity lampoon -- but the vision of Obama is hilarious.

What?
You mean he isn't Muslim? And I thought that his wife is Angela Davis! Isn't that why he associates with known Weatherman Underground Desperados? I mean he was after all a community organizer in Chicago, a term or two as a state representative, building a small fortune from handouts, 1/2 term as a junior US Senator for Illinois. That should make him qualified to be president. I mean that's better than riding in a F-3 Phantom Fighter for sure and a lifetime of congressional service.

I guess we really do know even less here in Mid America. I realize now that I'll never be sophisticated enough to read the New Yorker, let alone understand the dang thing. Oh well, I guess I'll have to settle for looking at the pictures...

Not sure I understand you
technical_editor - 2:08 PM EST

...to hear a continuance of references to inferences made about his loyalties, based on his behavior and things he has said, is quite disappointing.
=======
If one cannot question his loyalty on what he says or his behavior, what is left to judge his loyalty?

I will question his loyalty cause I do not believe it is to the America I believe in.
I sincerely believe he is a Marxist, quite probable a muslim.
At least he is sympathetic to every muslim cause I have heard him speak to.

Another thing, I want his birth certificate verified as to where this man was born.
He just may not even be eligible to run for President.

the b hussein cartoon cover
for those who might think conspiracy this may be no more than a less than subtle attempt by the left to provide cover further down the road for b hussein.

The clinton's were successful always saying this is old news. Perhaps the new yorker thought that with the cover they could defeat any further criticism of the b husseins closer to election time.

But this effort weill probably bacjfire on the bootlickers at the new yorker. They may have inadvertently given some on the right ammunition to oppose b hussein.

as others have stated, including b hussein himself, the public really has no clue who he is. But that is how the left prefers it. The campaign of smoking mirrors isn't in full stride yet and they don't want the train derailed while it is just getting ready to leave the station.

But it appears b hussein himself doesn't want tthe public to know much about him as he severely limits press access and fully relies on his acolytes to spin his lack of resume and very limited experience

times are a-changing
This from people who gave us a General Be-tray us" ad in the Times. So its okay to depict standing generals on the battlefield as a traitor, but don't mock an impression of a presidential candidate, hopeful. I don't remember Obama objecting to the times ad, and its verbal caricature of the General.

xpressit
You make a good point. After all there was no outrage about the Genearl Be-tray us" ad at all. So clearly there is something wrong with liberals who behave this way.

Outrage
I wonder how much outrage will be shown when New Yorker magazine comes out with its next satirical cover showing McCain with one foot in the grave and one foot on a banana peel.

But, as the saying goes ... in humor, truth.

HUMORLESS PRIG
HUMORLESS PRIG
The Obama Cult requires a 10-cent IQ.

Heard exerpts from the Larry King interview last night. Here we have an excellent opportunity for the "I don't take myself too seriously!" Barack "Barry" Hussain bin O'BoyToy (nee: Obama) to let it all out and just laugh. The topic is a cartoon and this guy sounds like he just lost his collection of Hari-Kari Knives.

I have written this before on TH, this guy is a humorless prig. There is not a legitimate laugh or joke about this guy. All he is is a case of serious aelf judgement bordering on mental illness.

Remember me when I wrote; George Washington used to take out his false teeth for a communal laugh at the dinner table, Abraham Lincoln liked racy French girl jokes, Teddy Roosevelt acting and making mug faces, George Bush gusting around with the 20 year olds at the Air Force Academy.

Barack "Barry" Hussain bin O'BoomBox (nee: Obama) "You know, I never take myself too seriously!" - pathetic.

The NYer Cover Will Resonate
There are enough legitimate facts about the Obamas' affiliations and histories that are proximal to the NYer satirical cover image that some fence-riding voters will be persuaded to vote against Obama. And this elction is essentially about voting for or against Obama.

Y'all will like this
There was an *awesome* article on HuffingtonPost from Tom Tomorrow, a really great cartoonist, about how absurd this whole conversation is.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-tomorrow/satire-by-the-bo ok_b_113049.html

Even the left knows this is not a big deal.

Satire is satire. In the comics, nobody's a sacred cow.

Strategy Backfired
The cartoon was supposed to depict how paranoid conservatives are with our myths. Their strategy backfired on them. The New Yorker is a liberal magazine. The liberals were supposed to laugh and say "See this! The Republicans are spreading lies and hysteria again, they're all just paranoid."

The problem is, the cartoon hit too close to home; the liberals aren't too sure about Obama themselves. Infact, some superdelegates are now planning to "unpledge Obama" when the vote is taken on the convention floor. Now it looks like the Democrats are getting a little "paranoid."

Good Question Talent Scout
Somewhere I recently read something about "extractions" taken from Obama's birth certificate and wondered what they were refering to. Was his birth certificate withheld from the public eye? If so, why? For what reason?

It's not even good.

Like the typical New Yorker cartoon, this one's a colossal dud.

Showing Obama making a cell phone call to Bin Laden from the inaguration stand saying something like, "What do I do now?" would be a lot more satirical.

Liberalism is Fascism
Hope you won't mind my referring to posts on a different article (Medved on Obama's Messiah status.)

Another poster noted that you seemed to know a lot about Nazism and asked whether you had insight re: their alleged "perfection" of the partial birth abortion? If so, would you be willing to post info. here?

Kathleen
"In the final calculation, unsophisticated yahoos, to the extent they really are, pose a lesser threat to the nation than an elitist intelligentsia convinced it knows what's best for the rest."

No sh*t! This ought to (rightfully) frighten the hell out of people favoring Obama. But they are too like-minded or naive to see the danger.

Honestly, it's by the grace of God that I didn't stay a liberal, so I don't want to be mean about it.

Now I'm thanking God for the "unsophisticated yahoos" who will rescue us from the greater danger!

AudiR10
You never fail to bring humor to TH. Keep up the good work!!

ps AudiR10
Thanks for the JibJab tip. They are great producers of bipartisan satire! I can't wait to check it out!

REILLEY ACE OF SPIES
?? did I get that "handle" right?

HUMORLESS PRIG descibes this bore perfectly. I cannot believe we might get stuck listening to him drone on in fits and starts for the next
4-8 years!!

I also have to applaud your stamina sitting through his interview on Larry King!! (Two drones, one simply more withered than the other!)

That's what I call "taking one for the team"!!

It's getting monotonous
The Obama campaign arranges a straw man challenge for Barrack to knock down. It is always about his race or religion. The left wing media praises Him for how wonderfully he rises above it. McCain falls for the whole shebang like a drunken teen angel falling for the latest movie stud. Lather, rinse, repeat.
