Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Barack Obama seemed to have survived the blasphemous rants of his preacher and remained relatively untarnished by the perceived dissatisfactions of his privileged wife.

But he may be less lucky with remarks he made recently about embittered, small-town Americans, who "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Those words now cling to Obama like Styrofoam packing peanuts. The more he tries to brush them away, the more they seem to burrow into the American psyche.

Being effete comes naturally to Democrats these days, though compared to Obama, Hillary Clinton looks like a mud-bogger from East Texas. Especially when she's slamming down a shot of Crown Royal, as she did recently at Bronko's Restaurant in Crown Point, Ind.

Nary a flinch did Clinton betray as the elixir trickled down her throat. If only Obama's words had been so smooth. Not only did he manage to un-charm many who were willing to give him a closer look, but his comments -- made at a private San Francisco fundraiser -- were before a crowd widely viewed as equally remote from the lives of regular folk.

That Obama would articulate disdain for what was once generally recognized as "American" culture feels like betrayal to former fans, including one Vietnam vet in Ohio, who interpreted Obama's comments in an e-mail to me:

"Those poor rubes and yokels out there in 'flyover country' . . . Since they can't sort through the ambiguities of world economics and the complexities of the 21st century, they are clinging to their First and Second Amendment rights . . . too simple-minded to think through the issues of culpability, so they resort to racism, xenophobia, isolationism, and protectionism," and "a simplistic Sunday school religion as a security blanket."

As Clinton herself noted following Obama's remarks, the Democratic Party has had trouble convincing working Americans that party leaders are not out of touch with so-called "Ordinary Americans." A few recent examples: John Kerry and his expensive toys; John Edwards' $400 haircuts; Howard Dean's stereotyping of Southerners as caring only about race, guns, God and gays.

Most candidates eventually expose themselves as "faux bubbas," the term the late political cartoonist Doug Marlette coined to describe yuppies trying to be good ol' boys. There's little less authentic than a New England-bred politician displaying his redneck bona fides. Even Edwards, whose family resume carries the imprimatur of true lint, couldn't pull off his populist act while appointing a new 25,000-square-foot home.

Now comes Obama, whose recent bowling expedition earned him membership in the faux bubba club and put the italics in cringe. To be fair, he gave it the ol' college try and was a good sport when his aim hugged the gutter.

The truth is, Americans don't really insist that their presidents be as "ordinary" as they are. Only pollsters think they do. But voters do like to feel respected, and Obama's San Francisco remarks sounded like contempt.

Too many generations of Americans have enriched the sod of flyover country and elsewhere with their blood, sweat and toil -- precisely so that a Barack Obama might some day aim for the White House -- to dismiss them so glibly.

These 21st century folks don't cling to guns out of bitterness, but often to hunt for game that ends up on their dinner table. In some families, that tradition is only a generation or two away from necessity. Their faith isn't an antidote to frustration but is a centuries-old framework for spiritual transcendence.

As for their not liking people who are not like them, what could Obama have meant? That people who are barely clinging to jobs are xenophobic rather than justifiably concerned that our immigration laws are a joke?

Obama has expressed regret that his words might have been offensive and artfully shifted focus to Clinton's own pandering about learning to shoot a gun as a child.

"She's talking like she's Annie Oakley. Hillary Clinton's out there like she's on the duck blind every Sunday, (like) she's packin' a six-shooter."

Fair enough. Annie got her gun and Obama got his boot stuck in his mouth. But God-fearing defenders of the Second Amendment -- who are in their duck blinds packing shotguns, not six-shooters -- know a decoy from the real thing.

If someone quacks like an elitist, he just might be one.

Mud-Bogger from East Texas
I grew up in East Texas but never saw or heard the term "mud-bogger" until I saw it in your "Bowling for Obama" column. From the context, a mud-bogger from East Texas must be an exceptionally ignorant person from an exceptionally backward part of flyover country.

There's a lot of irony in the use of this kind of term in a column slamming the candidates for elitism.

MoonBat alert
Silly Lilly might have drowned in that never ending stream of idiocy she spews, but, all is not lost. I saw Kimberly here someplace yesterday!

DEBATE!!
C'mon Dems don't let me down!! Will tonight's debate have all the action of the NFL at it's best? or will it be a milk-toast, love fest yawner? I'm waiting for Hillary to show herself the hard nosed crass witch (spelled with a "b") we all know she is and obama is shown as the girlie man, double minded politician we all know he is.... Oh! one could only hope!!!

Proud Liberal
Hmm...RUMORS about secret island meetings of elite whites, served by blacks and hated by locals. Well, here is a link to some interesting data on campaign monies...it takes a couple of minutes for the Spotfire player to resolve the data images. Go to the donations tab and play with the Household income slider. Obama has made much of the size of many of his donations, trying to give a picture of the little guy being his main source of funds. But watch what happens when you slide the income up - as you get up to the $180K range, well, let's just say that Democrats seem to get lots of money from elites. Suddenly, it becomes very clear why Obama could express such contempt for the Average Joes/Janes - he was in front of his REAL constituency - the elite liberal power brokers.

re: Hawk writes
Ok, Hawk. Let's ask Americans the question:

Are you more concerned in the upcoming Presidential election about raising gas prices or perceptions of being bitter? mortgage prices or snobby President? ending the war in Iraq or an elitist president?

The elitist right wing media considers its various Swift Boat agendas like Reverend Wright and bitter tirades as more important than, say, oh, a 3 TRILLION dollar war.

Now that's arrogance and elitism, the right wing media thinks they can fool enough voters to vote "bitter".

Proud Liberal
You have to remember that less than 50% of the votes were cast for McCain in the primaries when the nomination was still being actively contested. But due to the Republican primary setup where the winner gets all the delegates and the conservative vote was split amongst several candidates, McCain kept getting the plurality (not to mention the states with "open primaries").

Just imagine, if the Dems used the same formula, Obama too would now be the candidate for the dems and when these issues came out the Dems would have had no alternative. At least right now they can avoid the buyer's remorse (although Hillary would not be much of an improvement...)

Proud Liberal
Proud Liberal:
yeah, Carter was (and seemingly continues to be) a winner. Nah, I'll just sit back and watch the great obama implode from all the crap spewing from his mouth. What he's doing to himself should be on mythbusters or something.

Post (@ss)holer
Post Holer:
what does gas at $115 a barrel have to do with Bush? He's not kissing enough terrorist butts like obama would? Need I remind you that it is all the envirnmental, liberal groups that have prevented us fom sensibly drilling in ANWR? What about demand from Chinca and India? Second, if you think Iraq is a mess now, try packing up and leaving precipitously-remember how that was done in Afghanistan in the 1980's? Hmmm, wonder what then happened? And, finally you jerk, how the hell is it a mortgage crisis if 96% of mortgages are paid on time each month. Oh, I see, it's a crisis because irresponsible people who think they deserve a house in addition to flat screen tvs, expensive gym shoes, crack cocaine, and free health care, as well as speculators, got burned because they didn't live within their means. Yeah, just like Hurricane Katrina was Bush's fault and a crisis because despite three days of warnings and supplication, the blacks there refused to leave until it was too late...

Hawk
I realize I'm stuck in a time warp a bit. When I was younger the GOP was the party of big business, which translates to "rich," which translates to "elite and out of touch." There's an excellent book "Sleep walking through history," which describes the Reagans' belief that Carter had diminished the American presidency and that the Reagans were committed to re-establishing an imperial presidency. The author describes the monied class who ponied up and attended Reagan's inaugural. It was the "elite" my man who showed up for Reagan's inaugural.

So, times have changed, the coming republican majority came, America moved from blue collar to white collar middle class to post industrial information society.

Republicans, astonishly enough, seem to think of themselves as "ordinary people." champions of "the little guy."

And, oh by the way, perhaps you can explain to me why republicans are so bit**** about lattes. It occurred to me that republicans are playing with fire when they taunt the Starbucks crowd. If the Starbucks crowd goes for Obama en masse he's a shoo-in.

Proud liberal-why proud?
Proud Liberal:
great story. Man, and it's been all over the liberal media, right? Or was this a wet dream you had last night?

The obama dance
CW:
God, that's true. The video of obama "dancing" is truly painful to watch. I guess it's true what people say about "men" who dance with their hands above the waistline: they are pantywaists. I suppose it would be considered "unfair" and perhaps "racist" by the media for McCain to use that "dancing" in an ad but it would score points with all of us who thinks obama loves himself and his dancing and is therefore REALLY out of touch.

Beware the Wisdom of the Crowd
Conservatives should keep in mind that the primary republican electorate spurned the exhortations of conservatives and chose John McCain as the Republican presidential candidate.
So far you're 0 for 1.

Which is to say that a rant by Parker may be no more meaningful that a puff of smoke.

Many months ago at the beginning of the campaign a liberal spy described a gathering of republican big wigs on an island in (I think) Michigan. The place they held the meeting was patrolled by security guards who wouldn't let ordinary people within 20 yards of the gate. The attendees were all white. The wait staff was all black.

The liberal spy interviewed the ordinary people on the island. The ordinary people said they hated the elitist republican fat cats who were meeting on their island.

Lilly has vanished...
right along with Oprah. Perhaps Barack Boy has stuck his golden foot in his uncontrolled mouth one time to often. I'm with you, Wildwest -- I don't wish her ill, but it sure is nice not to have to scroll through (since I never read them anymore) her incessant ramblings.

JD's Handsome Son -- best laugh I have had all day! Thanks for taking the time to write all that. Just loved the last line because, all of us who read you regularly, know that you would never want to come across as harsh. BTW, I think we have already exceeded the number of generations of imbeciles that this country can produce, don't you?

I'm not so sure about the regulation of marriage thing, but I absolutely think -- and always have -- that there should be some kind of test you have to pass, or license you have to apply for, in order to have a child. For Pete's sake, you have to get a license to be a hairdresser or manicurist, but you have just produce kid after kid after kid with absolutely no oversight at all. But, as you said, generations of imbeciles.

the issue was made by the missus oblahma whining about why they were expected to repay their student loans as if they should somehow be excused from the debt. It gets to be a bit galling when persons with large incomes moan and cry about trying to balaance their lives, paying for summer camp and piano lessons when many americans are concerned about making the mortgage and car payments and putting food on the table. Listening to tales of woe from the wealthy over money matters has always been disengenuous

It is about intellectual
elitism, stupid.

Survival for Obama?
The rants, the slurs, the spin, the lies, the worldview of the Obama's and the DNC Congressional leadership may pass in a Democrat Primary but not in the General Election. I am praying that the RNC and 527's will keep the pressure on Obama in Sept-Nov. because we know ole John will not. He wants a too respectful campaign to get 273 electoral. So push this Empty Suit. He is fracturing from nose to toes. And what do we have? Another socialist pacifist in the stripe of McGovern et al.

elitist and privileged?
so, in other words, parker is saying that neocon pundits were WRONG about rev wright sticking, WRONG about his wife's "contraversy" damaging him and our now hoping this "bitter" thing will stick.

also, what is this nonsense about obama being an "elitist" and his wife being "privileged?" a look at their bios easily dismisses that. they both earned everything they got and shouldn't be demonized for being successful. they are, in fact, the least elite of all of the remaining candidates (hillary: parents paid for wellesly college, first lady of usa and ak, household made $100 mil since 2000, mostly by her husband; mccain: married to a $250 mil heiress). now, privileged and elitist would describe pres bush, who is the son of a billionaire career politician who was pres and vp and cia head, got into school on connections, not merits, operated several failed businesses, and had his daddy buy him a mlb team.

Values Voters
What Obama said was just a recapitulation of the term "values voters".

What do you think those "values" voters where voting if not gays, guns, religion and abortion?

The right wing calls them "value votes" or "social conservatives". Obama calls them "bitter".

In either case, values voters got hoodwinked into voting for Bush. And that's a fact. The values voters got none of their "values" addressed, meanwhile gas is at $115/barrel, Iraq is mess, the mortgage crisis is being left untouched by Bush.

Oh yes, gotta love those value voters who are easily hoodwinked by Swift Vote Veterans for truth. Yeah.

lilly
Silly lilly where are you. Maybe she is trying to figure out why they only pay here $20,000.00
a year teaching. They surely must have seen her coming because I live in Fla also and the teachers I know make allot more than lilly does.

Mongo
Maybe Lilly's out hunting somewhere. If you see her duck or you may be a dead duck, if her shooting is anywhere like her thinking.

Obama & Hillary tonight
I'd rather watch re-runs of who gets voted off Idol. Though I must say they have really ramped up the entertainment value of a campaign. Just think of what we'd be missing if it was a one-horse race for the Libs. I so want this to go on through August. And please tell me McCain will not take away the headlines by selecting some controversial VP.

Retired Geek
Good question. Not to mention the fact you didn't choose to make one of these possible ancestors your "spiritual mentor" for 20 years.

New Obama parody
my blog! enjoy

C'mon Kathleen,
Obama wasn't picking on poor whites from rural America!

He was talking to his fellow blacks! Re-read those words, you can't miss it.

RXLady
Odinga claimed they were in Jan. I just went though MANY web pages and they were all from Jan and Feb and they just say that Obama is not aware of the relationship. "Dem say what's it matter his relationship to him anyway?"
Let me think after reading all of the stories on Odinga I would like to know also. It would have a BIG impact on my decisions.

RxLady,

I think she is his half sister through his biological father and a woman in Africa.

Obama and Hillary Spar Tonight
It's on 7:00 central on ABC.

I'm curious if all those styrofoam peanuts sticking to Obama will be pointed out tonight, or will the media panel let him coast unscathed again.

Both of them disgust me, but I am really rooting for Hillary to smack him down tonight. He's due.

Wendy's just a more...
stupid (if that's possible) version of the libtard trolls that show up on TH. Wendy, let go of the BDS. You'll feel much better in the end.

Rocky on taxes ...
I followed your link and read a number of articles on Mr. Cryer's "not guilty" verdict. It is true that he was found not guilty of "willful failure to file" is taxes. But don't get that confused with the fact that he will still have to pay taxes.

The jury simply looked at the information and determined that he would have filed his taxes if the IRS had could have made it clear to him that he was obligated to do so. Mr. Cryer's good faith interaction with the IRS indicated that his failure to file was not "willful".

If you know the IRS like I know the IRS, they WILL collect the taxes. One way or another. The Nazi SS would look like Girl Scouts compared to the IRS. I know. I've been a tax protester going on 30 years now. Boy could I tell you some stories!

Can anyone find out...
what Obama's exact relationship to Raila Odinga in Kenya is?

Hey, that's right...
where is Lilly, anyway?

roadkill58...
GOOD ONE!!!!!!!

Wendy is the new Kimberly
whatever happened to Kimberly?

Wendy
Wendy I wonder if you could answer a simple question for me?

If Obama wasn't guilty by association with the "Hate America" and "racist" declarations from Mentor Wright - as a white dude, how am I guilty of association by ancestry?

And he can't even dance!
Great column. Anyone see Obama dancing with Ellen Degeneres? It looked like he was doing the girl's part. If I were McCain I'd use it in an ad somehow.

mongo
as lilly is ancient by her own postings. She claims to be 80. She is either on vacation or has finally succumbed to the rage she has unleased against the right. Personally her absence is a welcome relief. Her calling all racists who won't support her love object, the oblahma and her distain for everything outside of massachusetts is nothing to be missed. I don't wish her an untimely end but I likewise don't miss her empty comments

I question
whether Obama has escaped from the impact of the Rev Wright situation, the "bitter" speech, his association with terrorists and other radicals and his far left agenda. I have gone on liberal threads and found they will forgive almost anything about him. They are the party radicals populating the primaries. In the general election, he will pay for his positions by failing to convince moderates from both parties and all the other people in fly over country.

Where has Townhall.com's most outspoken
Obamatron silly lilly been regarding Ooobama's "cling to guns and religion" comment? She seems to be speechless. Amazing!!

Income Tax
On this day when frustrations over the Income Tax are uppermost in many minds, why is it that the collective news-media ignores the fact that a Connecticut lawyer, Tom Crier, won a case against the IRS solely on the grounds that there is no law requiring mandatory payment of the Federal Income Tax?????
The IRS campaign to convince us otherwise, is the biggest story, of probably the biggest con game ever invented, but no one in the media will touch it. Why?
If you need more information go to http://www.ideas-wanted.com for a start.

Ummm, I think you got it backward ...
animalgirl. W's a country bumpkin who tried the elitist ivy league thing. It didn't work out for him. He's been as good a "unificator" as Fauxbama has demonstrated on the campaign trail that he might be. Lord help us all.

W, anyone?
"There's little less authentic than a New England-bred politician displaying his redneck bona fides."

Uhhh, George W. Bush, anyone? He was the absolute worst in this regard.

Bowling for Obama
Man oh man, does Kathleen Parker have a bullseye on her office wall? Girl hits it EVERY time, and Bowling for Obama is yet another example. Well said.

Hunting trip
Can we arrange for Dick Cheney to take Osama Obama on a hunting trip?

Wendy
Did someone forget to tell you that voting for Bush isn't one of the options? It is also entirely possible that the same will true of Obama very soon.

my 2 cents
BO has foot-in-mouth disease, Hillary has over the top negatives.

Just another day for the dems and they wonder why the Republicans won the last two elections.

I'd vote for Obama over Bush now
Given the climate change proposals our President is about to announce tomorrow, I have decided that there really is no reason to prefer a Counterfeit Cowboy over an effete pretender (who at least doesn't pretend to be conservative).

Good Column, Kathleen
You and Michele really blistered this guy. The best thing McLaim has going for him is the two dhimmi senate aristocrats currently busy cutting each other up. May the blood flow copiously.
