Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Barack Obama is a magician.

He could tell me it's raining on a sunny day, and I'd grab an umbrella. He could tell me the moon is the sun, and I'd reach for my shades.

He could even tell me that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's rants god-damning America and blaming AIDS on a white-man conspiracy were wrong but essentially justified by a racist past ... and I'd have to slap myself before I saddled up a polka-dotted horse and galloped down the Yellow Brick Road.

Obama's speech Tuesday from Philadelphia -- the city of brotherly love -- was eloquent, inspiring and will be read in schools for generations. But between the lines of change and reconciliation were a discomfiting hint of buried fury, a sense of racial righteousness and a tacit approval attached to his expressed disapproval of Wright's now-famous raves that will leave many Americans wondering: Is he with us? Or is he against us?

In a flourish of brilliance, Obama framed his Rev. Wright problem in the context of America's unfinished work toward "a more perfect union," as envisioned by the nation's forefathers. It isn't that Wright is off-the-wall, we were to infer. It is that our country is falling short of its promise.

Which isn't completely false, of course, but not completely true, either. America isn't finished with its business of equality -- and race does still bedevil us -- but our progress since the twin blights of slavery and Jim Crow isn't insignificant.

Ever conscious of his pledge to unity, Obama acknowledged as much, saying that Wright wasn't wrong to talk about racism -- even if it was one-sided. He was wrong to speak "as if our society was static: as if no progress has been made."

But what he didn't acknowledge is that Wright is completely off-the-wall, even if the snippets we've seen are only a fraction of his life's work. Give Wright credit for helping the unfortunate and for leading Obama to his faith. But those accomplishments don't quite neutralize the anti-white message of the man Obama selected as his spiritual mentor.

Like the best politicians, Obama senses our restlessness. One of his many gifts is his ability to lull people with flawless logic and uplifting rhetoric.

Of course he disagrees with some of Wright's controversial statements -- just as most people disagree with some of what their pastors and rabbis say. We're yum-yumming that idea, thinking "Yeah, that's right," when our inner reality-checker kicks in and kills the buzz.

Then we remember that advancing lies and conspiracy theories that pit black against white is not, in fact, defensible. And that what many find offensive in Wright's statements is not comparable to the minor differences they likely have with their own pastors and rabbis.

The question still remains: Why did Obama, future author of racial harmony, stay with a preacher whose black nationalist leanings were no secret?

Obama said he could no more denounce Wright, who is "like family," than he could denounce the black community -- or his white grandmother. Instead, he praised Wright's larger presence and purpose in the black community as outweighing the YouTube replays of a profane man on the verge of paranoiac hysteria.

Moreover, the minister whom Obama first got to know 20 years ago spoke of "our obligations to love one another." But given Wright's racist eruptions, white Americans are justified in wondering whether those charitable thoughts also apply to them.

Finally, Obama suggested that if Wright is occasionally angry, he has a right to be, as does the community he serves. And if white Americans are startled to witness that anger, they haven't been paying attention.

That was a risky message, but one that counted on a reliable well of white guilt. Then Obama took another pre-emptive gamble and implored Americans to look at Wright's anger, rather than avert their gaze, and to embrace that anger as a prompt to change.

In other words, he artfully shifted focus from his still-perplexing relationship with Wright to our own dark hearts. The choice is ours, he said:

We can focus on one ol' crazy uncle who sometimes gets a little carried away -- and in so doing, destroy the audacity of hope. Or, we can keep our nation's date with destiny, fulfill the dream imagined 221 years ago to form a more perfect union.

And elect Barack Obama.

Anyone who fails to embrace the only appealing option -- eschewing cheap spectacle for a dance with destiny to the tune of hope -- begins to feel a little woozy and, oddly, un-American.

Abracadabra.

I See No 'Tacit Approval'

...and I think Ms. Parker is seeing what she wants to see, for the basest of partisan reasons. Obama called the Rev. Wrights comments "a profoundly distorted" view of America. That says it all.

It was disown, not denounce
If we're going to quote Obama, let's get it right. Obama already rejected and denounced what the Reverend said before he made this speech. How many ways can Obama reject what the Reverend says in words that will satify everyone. If Obama says this, someone will say Obama should have said that. If Obama explain's why he stay a member of the Reverends church for twenty years, someone else will say it goes to reason Obama judgment has been compromised because of Reverend Wright. If Obama says he didn't go to Reverend Wright for political advice, someone else will say what is Obama hiding. The ridiculous keeps on getting more ridiculous. It used to be, if you don't pay attention to them, they'll go away. Not so in the media. Some of those ridiculous ones are now in the media. Especially talk radio. Let's get other facts straight, it was Bill Clinton who conned his way into the White House with his charm. Hillary has no charm, still she's trying to con her way into the White House with the help of talk radio and Fox. If Hillary is elected President, do those who attacked Obama on her behalf, thinks for one moment she will be grateful to them. No way, she won't waste any time in disowning them, in the way they wanted Obama to disown Reverend Wright.

Flaming multi-culti
Obama's speech was born of the basest partisan motives--to retrieve his suddenly imperiled candidacy from the fire.

The rhetoric of Obama's speech was dishonest and insincere. I have no question whose side Obama is on, and it's not American racial equality and it's not the well-being of this nation.

The only question now is, Is there enough white guilt to whitewash the hatred that underlies the Obama campaign.

A Speech With Honor
If Obama shot his pastor dead and burned down Trinity Baptist Church, conservatives still would not be satisfied. Fortunately, Obama appeared to know this when, this morning, he spoke with honor and stood his ground. He did not quote the words of Martin Luther but he may as well have because this was the general meaning of his speech:

"Here I stand. God help me. I can do no other."

(The words of Martin Luther (not King---the original one, who, around 1500, got into quite a lot of trouble for splitting off from the Catholic Church and establishing the Protestant Reformation, which led to all Protestant denominations.)

Obama throws his pastor under the bus
Then he back up and runs over Jeremiah again, and then says he is a life long "friend".

I would not want to be one of Obama's lifelong friends.

If thats not enough, after denying his beloved Pastor three times before the coc.k crowed, he then used his running dogs to disenfranchise the voters of Michigan. What a perfidious, back stabbing weasel!

B. Hussein Obama, the "civil rights" advocate has now thrown Jeremiah under the bus, and worked to stop re-votes in Michigan

Good luck Hussein: you will need it in November if you swindle the millions of voters in two of the largest states, and back stab your "friends".

Barack's non-apology
...It is not good enough to say that Obama disapproved of some of the things his racist minister preached.

Reverend Wright worships Louis Farrakan, thinks white people are the devil, and hates America. Why should Caucasian people vote for him?

Pinch your nose people and vote for McCain.

Read the Obama's speech
And you will easily notice that Obama actually shares his pastor's views of racial issues. One expresses his racism openly, the other rather shyly.

No Longer On The Fence
As much as I disagree w/ McCain on a myrad of issues, atleast the guy's not a racists; Obama is. I'm votn McCain.

Obamaramalamadingdong
Sorry, empty-suit Barack Obama is where he is because he is half black and knows how to pile on the b.s. And, unfortunately, highly qualified Mitt Romney is where he is because he is Mormon. Collectively, America has O.D.ed on stupid pills.

Obama has been given a free pass by the liberal, touchy-feely media until now because questioning anything about him would have been construed as being racist. Well, I hope the game is up and that those kid gloves will be coming off. Obama is being exposed for the fraud that he truly is.

Oh yeah?
Ms.Parker writes:"America isn't finished with its business of equality".

I am.

Unless you get up and go to work, support your family and your country, you are NOT my equal.

Amen, Katy
And since when did a sense of fairness make you "mean?"

Lilly, how dare you...
quote Martin Luther to defend a mouth-foaming racist and his acolyte?

The fact is Obama learned at the hate-preacher's feet for more than two decades. As they say, lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas. My prediction is Obama's campaign is about to sink to the bottom of Lake Michigan.

I don't believe there's enough white-guilt to whitewash the racist, America-hating rhetoric to which Obama has given his tacit approval.

Fightr4right
Why thanks honey!
Unfortuately I have to deal with white and black trash every day.
So sick of the bull crapola excuses.

I believe it says "Life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness".

Enough !
What’s your point? Would you not have disagreed with Obama’s speech had it been written by God himself? Even those on here with an authentic conservative bent must tire of the innuendo without humility, accusation without substance, and argument without logic. Your self-aggrandizing words will soon drift into oblivion while these honest and courageous words of this junior Senator will most likely remain a part of our political legacy for years to come.

At some point we as Americans do have to come together, and certainly it will be more of his words and not yours that may begin that movement.

Did Obama apologize for his own remarks?

Did Mr. Obama lead the way for apologies for playing a blatant race card last week when he told supporters in Mississippi, “They’re trying to hoodwink you.” Hardly any news media reported this. Even if he had apologized, the damage was done, and he got the massive vote in Mississippi.

Besides the “hoodwink” comment made by Obama last week, I remember he has made the “Okey-Doke” comment to appeal to black audiences to stoke old hurts.

Wasn't it James Baldwin who wrote,
...the fire next time?
You can bet you'll see fire with Michelle & Barack in charge.

Ms. Parker, you've spoken the truth. Great column.

Barack expects us to buy the idea that only a couple of times in Jeremiah's career has he erupted like a lanced boil...the rest of the time he was sweet, like my slightly crazy uncle.

I've got a bridge to sell....

Great article title

Excellent title to your article, Ms. Parker!

You know little about the power of God.

I prescribe delving deeply into the Bible. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is a wonderful accompanyment for note taking.

What you will come away with is something so substantial. I'll look forward to the elevation of your works.

Then you will no longer tolerate sensational topics. God Bless.

Listen, stormrunner,
But it WASN'T written by God himself. You can "what if" from now to November, and it won't change the facts.

Furthermore, re Jeremiah's jeremiad about rich white people being in control: given that blacks are about 12% of the population, ANY white people in control would be more likely. Besides, what about the rich blacks who are also in control? Let's be plain: Jeremiah feels disenfranchised and is encouraging his congregation to feel that way too. He's egging them on.

Read John McWhorter's works.

Obama is not black
but black AND white. He hates the white half because he is a racist. Pure and simple.

How come after 20 years Obama is just NOW calling Wright's words "profoundly distorted?"

For Lily to compare Obama with Martin Luther is repugnant.

And then there is Nellie who says, "kathleen Parker You know little about the power of God.
I prescribe delving deeply into the Bible. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is a wonderful accompanyment for note taking. What you will come away with is something so substantial. I'll look forward to the elevation of your works. Then you will no longer tolerate sensational topics. God Bless."

If you read "Science and Health," which is neither scientific nor healthy, then YOU know nothing of the power of God. Christian Science is neither Christian nor science, but a non-Christian cult.

How sad to read some comments
I am just glad that Almighty God was able to look beyound the man Saul of Tarsus, and the greatest of man was born. What my little family of 3 saw as legal immigrants 52 years ago traveling on Greyhound to LA, through the South is enough for me to consider Obama's speech very understandable and actually even more necessary. Yes, before coming to America one got the story that America is second only to the Heavenly Paradise, and yet, that sort or smoke screen was soon lifted as one had to read sings that said: White, Colored on eating places and even restrooms. Yes, of course the bus driver, a coal black man, an impecable gentlemen he had to order all blacks bordering, to the furthest back seat in the bus. It is my prayer that especially the White folk will take this opportunity to make Ameirca a better America, as even courts are still passing sentences for the evils perpetrated upon black people, etc. Yes, Obama is not perfect, neither do I support his political agenda, while at the same time I find my party nothing but Imperialism on top of being only a sliver less Socialistic than the Democrats. By the way, as I can detect, McCain to me is a sort of a refried Hitler, with dreams to bring peace to America and to the world the more places he can shoot to pieces. Of course King and Emperor George W. has already prepared the way. I base these remarks on what I more and more learn about the hopes and dreams of the Founding Fathers. If they would rise they would faint immediately seeing their America as an Empire.

Obama
His Pastor does not want Obama to be elected President. What kind of sermon would he give then? Can he still condemn us as racists after we elect a black man? This is the way he became famous. There are many honest good black pastors. So this is the way he competes. He preaches hate to not only adults but children. I am white and have had black friends all my life. And they would walk out of this church the same way Colin Powell did.
He will be glad if Obama loses. Then he will have new hate material for his sermons.

No pictures of Mom?
Why doesn't the Obamamama machine spin out some pictures of young Barack with his mother? Because he WANTS to hide the fact that she was white. HOW can he lay toxic guilt on the entire white population and have photos of his white mother all over the media?

-Ray

Barack Obama

Barack Obama grew up without a father and Rev. Wright’s role in his life needs to be seen in that context.

In his books, Barack Obama has told the story of the family into which he was born; about a father from Kenya whom he barely knew, who left when Barack was age 2, and about his white American atheist mother from Kansas who along with his father was a college student at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. By age 6, young Barack was already living in Jakarta with his mother and his Indonesian step father before moving back to Hawaii at age 10, to be raised by his maternal grandparents when his mother and her second husband divorced. His "birthright," says Senator Obama, was that he was given love, a good education, and hope. Barack Obama was raised in a non religious atmosphere by his mother and grandparents. Barack Obama has said that although he very strongly disagrees with Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s sometimes very harsh and racially bitter language, it was Pastor Wright who helped Barack become a Christian believer and it was Wright who married Barack and Michelle Obama. Wright is "part of the family" despite his very harsh language with which Barack Obama obvoiusly severely disagrees. It is absolutely certain and clear, however, that Barack Obama truly and deeply loves America and very much believes in a strong and united America as he has indicated in his second book The Audacity of Hope published in 2006.

Given the nature of human psychology what most of us generally see and hear is continually filtered through the prism of our previous experience, our principles and our beliefs. For many avowed "conservatives" this means that a "liberal" like Obama who sounds so right on so much must somehow be wrong and deceitful.

A few Facts: Part One
Now that Obama has played his racial trump card and is hanging his candidacy on white guilt, it finally becomes clear what the nature of the man is. But I, for one, refuse to accept any responsibility for American slavery or even the racism that exists in America. If America is a racist country, then it means that most in America are racists. That’s absurd. Here’re a few facts to munch on.

First, slavery has been abolished for 143 years - over seven generations. There are no more slaves left and no more children of slaves left.

Second, overwhelmingly, most of white Americans are not descendants of slave owners. Most Americans of all colors – purple, green, brown, red, yellow, black or people of pallor, are either immigrants themselves or (like me) descendants of immigrants.

Most of the blacks in America are not descendants of American slaves. They are descendants of immigrants from all over the world (legal or illegal) or are immigrants themselves. (I refuse to use the term "African-American." It is a misnomer. Most blacks in America are not from Africa any more than I'm from Ireland. My grandparents were, but my parents, and (I and my siblings) were born here and are therefore "Americans." Period. The insistence of most blacks, and the rest of those Americans who’re duped into using that misnomer, is consistent with the rantings of Jeremiah Wright. I can only make the assumption that they either hate America, or are ashamed of being an American. Fine. Have at it. But don’t expect me to feel guilty about their perpetual hard-on against the country I love.

Third, racism in America exists; it exists in every culture, and not just with whites. There are blacks who hate whites and browns, whites who hate blacks and browns, etc., etc., etc. There are people of every color who hate the Jews. It’s a fact of life. Accept it and move on.

Great Article
Obama attempted great spin yesterday. He attempted to use his oratory skills and white guilt to spin himself out of this situation.

Truth be told, he didn't know he was even in a situation until he saw the American reaction to his Pastor, friend and mentor, Rev. Wright.

He beleived the majority of Americans felt this way. Certainly the looney far left does. Obama has surrounded himself with such people. Which is why everytime I turn on the tube, there hs is denouncing this, rejecting that.

In infuriates him that he must do so, because he believes most of it but can't say it. He may have a glossy, polished exterior, but inside is just another set of dead men's bones.

The same racist assumptions...
...lurking in Obama's heart, as evidenced by his remaining with a church led by a bigot for 20 yrs, and his wife's shame for those white racists bastards who have run America for 200 yrs, remain. It is apparently inconceivable to Obama that he might be racist, or to his fans that they may be. He reiterates all the liberal racist doctrine, oblivious to it's essentially racist character.

This is a dangerous man, largely because he himself is unaware of his own embrace of evil, in the person of "Reverend" Jeremiah Wright. This blindness is a fatal flaw and would be catastrophic in a president of the USA.

Obama supporters
It has been reported that the Obama "base" consist of Blacks and "Elite white collar" Liberals; I see no problem for him with either of these constiuencies when it comes to the "hate America" declarations of Rev Wright.
The Blacks will rally due to race (and in many, many cases common racists beliefs) and the "Elite" of the left have hated America openly for decades (and in some cases, like those who obstruct military recruiters and bomb their offices have said and done worse than Wright).

Kathleen Parker
Well, I just lost a whole lot of respect for you. In view of your opening lines, I don't think you are qualified anymore to be a journalist. You are as much as admitting that you are no longer objective where Barac Obama is concerned.

Personally, he doesn't do a thing for me, and for the life of me I don't see the attraction. He's just another politician (albeit a bit more polished than most) telling the people what they want to hear.

The Wright Color
Imagine you walk into a church. You sit down in the pews and the preacher comes out to the pulpit and says, "I hate each and every one of you because you are white, but I will still try and preach the word of God and speak of the Gospels."

Everything after that sentence must be taken in that context. His heretofore sentiments will color everything else he says. That's what those defending Obama are missing.

For Bluepiper
Your comment on Obama reminds me of the Charon episode (I think the title was "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield"?) of the old "Star Trek" series. The natives of that planet were all coal-black on one side and ghost-white on the other--and defined "us" and "them" based on whether the left or right side of the body was black.

In a battle aboard the Enterprise between the last representatives of each of the Charon races, the combatants exchanged insults of "half-black" and "half-white".

Basically, in writing that episode, Roddenberry proved 40 years ago to be ominously prophetic about Obama!

If obama really wants to
sell himself as an agent of change and bring the races together,I think he should have made a Cosby-like speech.
Challenge these assertions that studying in school is a "white thing".
Stop blaming people long dead for the problems of today, keep the history alive, but getting back at white people for sins they didn't commit only keeps you stupid.

Accepting welfare because you think it is owed to you will never get you respect, only scorn.

Respect must be earned,America respects men like Colin Powell and most were very upset that he declined to run for president, that's how far this country has come in 40 years, yet people like wright still beat the drum about how terrible this country is...I'm sure he makes a nice living from his America hating rants, at the expense of his flock.

Be proud that the Condi Rice is the face of American foreign policy, instead of calling her a "sellout" along with others like Colin Powell.

Are they considered sellouts because they embraced the American culture of study and hard work and succeeded? What did they sell out? the idea that blacks are perpetual victims or children that have to be taken care of as the dems imply?

Every other ethnic group accepted that precept and all have succeeded. Many of the black churches thrive on perpetuating victimhood and do their parishioners little good outside of allowing them to vent.

Obama blew it, he showed himself to be just another pol.

A Few Facts: Part Two
Fourth, the term “racism’ means different things to different people. As with “misogyny” and “homophobia,” the term “racist” has become, to some, a term to describe anyone who even criticizes anyone of color. Well sorry, I don’t abide such foolishness. Let me give you an example.

I own a small company that requires a high level of technical knowledge. Nearly everyone in the company, at some time or another, comes in contact with customers. Consequently, as a condition of employment, all employees must abide by a dress code. This is to reflect the professionalism of the company. This is clearly stated in the employee manual, along with the penalties for not abiding by the dress code.

Some time ago, shortly after hiring a bright young black who we were training in the Adobe Creative Suite, he started showing up for work wearing baggy pants, sneakers with the laces undone, sweatshirts and a Raiders cap worn askew. To make a long story short, after a series of warnings, disciplinary actions, and a six-month long, carefully documented, unsuccessful attempt at reasoning with the man, he was fired for failing to abide by the dress code. I simply could not get through to him that if he wanted to be a professional, he had to dress like one while at work. I didn’t care if, on his own time, he ran around town in a clown suit, orange wig and a red rubber nose. But while on company property, he must abide by the company dress code. He promptly filed a discrimination suit against the company and to this day, I truly believe that he believes he was a victim of racism. I’m sure that Lilly and Hal/Robert would agree. Fortunately the jury didn’t.

I can’t count the number of times applicants have shown up dressed like punk rockers or gangsta rappers and who fully expect to be taken seriously. Racism? Hardly. I get sick and very tired of people of any color who, after refusing to play by the rules, wrap themselves in a cloak of victimhood.

More for Bluepiper
Actually, Obama's true colour is the one described as "pale" (for one of the four horsemen) in Revelation (most English versions of Bible)--which I translate as "cremains-grey", due to the context. He proved it somewhat before trying to obfuscate about Wright--when he claimed to "regret" voting along with the other 99 Senators to prevent the judicial-murder-by-starvation of Terri Schiavo!

Please explain
“America isn't finished with its business of equality -- and race does still bedevil us -- but our progress since the twin blights of slavery and Jim Crow isn't insignificant.”

I would like Ms. Parker to elaborate on the above comments. America isn’t finished with its business of equality? Race does still bedevil us? Perhaps she would like to furnish some details.

It is whites who have been persecuted by the likes of the Mike Nifongs of this country. It is innocent white students who have had their lives ruined by unsubstantiated accusations.

It has come to the point where it is no longer equality of opportunity that blacks demand in this country but equality of results. If they aren’t making the same money as some CEO even though they don’t even have a high school diploma, it is our country’s failure as a nation. It they can’t get their butts out of bed in the morning to hold down a job or get an education, it is somehow the fault of racism.

Our country has laws that protect everyone’s rights, and all people, even blacks, are protected by those laws. There is no more work to be done, unless you want to make it illegal for people to dislike blacks. That is what is really going on here. Blacks don’t want equal opportunity. They want to be universally loved, and any white person who simply retains their God given, American protected right not to associate with or love someone that they don’t like should be put in prison. That’s what they all really want.

I am sick to death of people like you, Ms Parker, and people like Barac Obama who constantly try to tell us that America has failed, and yet, they don’t ever supply any details. You show me where any blacks are suffering persecution or don’t have their rights protected in this country today and then, maybe I’ll agree with you.

For Seawolf
A notable fact about Wright is that he knows that in very few nations (the US being one of these, Canada managed to prove to be such historically***), the government will allow a man to preach hatred against the nation ON ITS SOIL.

***In 1982, such hatred has been demonstrated (in 1982) in front of media by a PM. I hope never to see the day when a similar (so openly contemptuous of the nation of which he has been elected leader, or aspires to such post) one is elected POTUS.

Selling the Kool Aid

The glib jiv merchant is back and the progressive/liberals will faint and the liberal media will lap it all up.

This constant liberal quest for NIRVANA will lead to another version of the Balkans.

Kathleen you are wrong
Kathleen,
Your quote, "Barack Obama is a magician." I disagree. He is a con artist and a charlatan. Lastly, he is socialist, talented-tenth(er), and a slick salesman.

F
That's his grade for the speech. If Obama's goal yesterday was to calm the fears of independent voters regarding his association with his America-hating pastor, then he had failed. He didn't need to change the minds of the Democratic base. The people he needed to convince were voters like me who are looking for an alternative to the Republican Party. Judging from comments of his base supporters, Obama did a wonderful job of appeasing them, but he hurt his chances badly by making matters worse when became partisan. He brought up divisive issues and was attacking people who don't agree with affirmative action and calling it reverse discrimination. Well, guess what? Many of us do feel that way, and when you try to marginalize us, you do yourself no favors by attacking us. While his words has been about bringing the races together, his actions and assoications has had the opposite effect. Hillary must be smiling.

Hypocrisy is thy name
"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus," Obama told ABC News, "but I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude."

Barack H. Obama, April 11, 2007

i have never
owned a slave or discriminated against anyone.... i own no guilt. and i'll be damned if i will assume it so mr wright can feel his righteous indignation.... this is what you get from a no nothing empty suit racist like obama.

icedog
didn't hear that quote. thanks for the info. shows that obama is a liar as well as an empty suit racist.

A Black John Edwards
Barrack Obama is not a magician but a snake oil salesman. Mr. Obama is the black version of former Senator John Edwards, he will promise the world, he lives in la-la land, and spend, spend, spend you money.

Robert
Man...I use to believe you at least skimmed the articles before you started scribbling your Marxist rants, but it is now obvious you don't even glance at the friggin' titles. Loser.

robert
what did kennedy get right about vietnam. more people died from jfk's incompetence then have died in iraq. or can we say bay of pigs. better leave the "keeping america free" to your betters. you would do well in obama"s so called church. fit right in with all those whitey haters.

MSM
Did you guys happen to see all those whiteys on the MSM stating that OBAMAs speech was great or greater than the MARTIN LUTHER KING SPEECH. What a bunch of suckarses they looked like. He couldnt hold MLK jock srtap much less make a speech that would have equaled MLK.

Guilting America.................
Then your an idiot, like 72% of the Americans who believe in Racial equaity.Because African Americans do not. They believe and have always believed in the superiority of Black over white.
When ever a African American begins spouting how they are going to change things, I first grab for my wallet, then head for cover. I am sure that the change they speak of will cost me both money and liberties for the rest of us.
Currently we other minorities cannot use the `N' word, yet they can call us everything. Add to that, we are racist if we call a black a thief, Ever count the alias names a black convict has, clear case of Idenety theft, multiple times.
Convict a black for murder that is televised and you get a bias jury pool.

If you think about it
This was a very easy speech to give (and a boon for a candidate to have a national forum to do it!).
All he had to do was wrap himself in the American Flag (for a change, and reportedly 8 of them no less!), utter high flown rhetoric (his specialty), include many one-liner quotable platitudes to supply his supporters with justification for continued support and defense.

Now, a press conference--answering questions--that would have taken some courage. He probably would have had more than 8 of them though.

Look, I wrote this guy off ages ago as someone I'd even consider voting for. Not because of his race, religion or anything personal, but because of his voting record and his stance on issues (or lack thereof). I'm just an interested spectator. I haven't seen his speech yet (any of them for that matter), and probably won't bother. I'm sure it was wonderful.

you need to leave the thinking to your betters. not all whites participated in slavery, you make it up as you go liberal

So much for MLK's dream.
You know I really didn't know this reverse bigoted racism is in existance in of all things a Christian Church. That is hate speech. It has nothing to do with love. And to think that Obama didn't know it is such a hypocritical lie. I guarantee everybody knows what goes on in a church. Everybody practically worships the pastor and hangs on his every word. His sermons are talked about, recorded and is sold to all. It most likely was the conversation of many a Sunday dinner. If someone disagreed with the pastor and what he stands for he is usually shunned and made to feel unwelcomed for disagreeing. Obama got busted for coming from the same atmosphere he is trying to campaign on, is a total hypocrit and was caught with his hand in the cookie jar. As far as I have read MLK was not like that. I highly respect him and what he stood for. Too bad Obama, his preecher, and his church can't be that way. They are continuing racism in this country. They are adding to the problem!

Yes, you may. For being such a good boy, you get an extra slice of watermelon tonight.

A Few Facts: Part Three.
The perception of racism is also something that is, most often, in the eye of the perceiver.

My watering hole is an Irish Pub in central Massachusetts. An Irish-American owns it and most of the regulars are either Irish, Irish immigrants or descendants of Irish Immigrants. Few, as you might imagine, are black.

Included in the tight clique of regulars, however, is the local Rugby team. Half of the players are either black or Hispanic, including my friend George, who is a recently naturalized citizen and an immigrant from Kenya. He is a huge, fearsomely imposing man who speaks impeccable English and is impressively educated. I’ve had long discussions with George about racism and his experience with it in America. He once said something that struck me.

George explained that what he usually runs into is fear or discomfort, rather than racism. For example, the first time he ever walked into the pub, heads swiveled and conversation stopped when the regulars gazed on the spectacle of six-foot-four-inch, 225 pound, jet black George. After George seated himself (next to me in fact) at the busy bar, conversation slowly resumed, but he could still feel the change in the air. So could I. We were all uncomfortable. George’s demeanor was stern and stoic. Everything changed instantly when the bartender asked George what he wanted and George cracked a smile and gave his order in that beautifully accented perfect English. George also felt the change and chalked it up to the fact that he was no longer a threat.

George and I formed a friendship that night and have been close ever since. When he told me that story, it reminded me of the first time I ever walked into an all-black bar in town to see a black band called “lots Of Papa.” I got the same reaction as George, until I spoke up and asked the guy next to me if the band is as good as I’d heard. The tension broke immediately.

Robert/Hal
What does that have to do with Obama and Wright? Do you have a comprehension problem as well as an identity problem?

The Reverand Wright
The Preacher Wright is WRONG, and so is Obama.

One thing
The one thing that Pastor Wright was right about was the CLINTONS. His statements were wright on. The Clintons thought that they had the Black Man
hoodwinked ,well pastor I will agree with you on that. I like hearing people like lilly try to defend hate speeches by blaming Conservatives.

Well lilly my dear I was a DEM for almost 40yrs and when I retired from the military in 1994 I went to the DMC to volunteer in Fl where I live and the Church burning thing is correct but it wasnt REPS that wanted me to tell Black People that REPS would burn down their Churches and burn croses in their yards if they didnt vote for DEMS it was the DNC who wanted me to tell Black people that LIE.

They also wanted me to tell the Elderly people that REPS would take their SSN checks from them if they didnt vote DEM.

To make a long story short I REFUSED and was told not to return anymore because that is our Message and if I wasnt willing to do that then dont come back.

So I am here today to tell you that almost everything that has happened to the LIBS and the Black Man can be contributed to no other than LIBERALS. You LIBS gave the Black man everything he wanted just for his VOTE and now it is coming back to BITE YOU IB YOUR ARSES.

So go away with your HATRED

On a white guilt-free zone.
I did not see the Obama speech.

There was no need to.

If a politician seeking the presidency had had a twenty year association with the Ku Klux Klan, or even David Duke, and when the association was revealed to the public, the politician went on television to explain the matter, why would I tune in?

What could he possibly say that would justify it?

So too with the Jeremiah Wright/Obama association.

Wright has said innercity blacks are murdering the "wrong" people when they kill fellow blacks, and Wright has embraced the view that God must be on the side of the blacks, and against whites. This guy is virulently anti-white.

It has reached "critical mass"...a seismic event in the political aspirations of Obama.

Obama now is damaged goods.

Nothing can change that.

By the way, I long since have divested myself of any notion of white guilt.

I am free, brother. Free.

What?
Got the memo from John Moody, Huh?

America has nothing to be guilty about.

How can a country that spouts religion, or Christianity be so divided by something like......race......gender......political party? Guilty? HUH? It is White Americans right to say, do and be whomever they want.

Why should they have guilt for upholding a church that is entrenched with child molestors, until this day, with tax-exemption and all. Why?

Yes, White Americans are the victims.

The Infamous Guilt Trip
How can you continuously listen to your so-called spiritual advisor's inflammatory rhetoric against our country, for 20+ years, and not take it to heart at some point in time? I am so tired of Senator Obama duping everyone into believing that he is "America's Choice". Not all of us in the African American community has sipped the Obama Kool-Aid. There is something about this guy that makes me feel uncomfortable. You have to have more than a smile and a speech (at least I would hope so) to get my vote. He lacks the experience that we need and I feel absolutely nothing whenever I hear one of his speeches. I believe that he is playing the race card to his advantage. If it's an Obama & McCain ticket I will be voting for McCain although I am a registered Dem. Wake up America, did you really know who he was before he began running? Look at his portfolio, look as credentials. He's how old? Is he truly a Muslim? Does he even salute our Flag? Swear on our bible? Was his wife not feeling very American before he began running for the presidency? I think Mr. Barack Hussein Obama (is he truly a Muslim or what? Hussein-Obama?) has more skeletons in his closet and I can not wait for them to come out! And for the love of God please do not compare this man to MLK, Please. Black America needs to stop already. You're voting for this man simply because of the color of his skin and you know it and I think that it's a real shame. GO HILLARY!! or GO MCCAIN!! Anyone but Mr. Hussein!!!

I would drop my pastor if:
He were breaking these commandments and leading the flock in this direction.

10 commandments, how many did he break and his flock agree with him and therefore they broke?

#3. You shall not take the Lords name in vain.
#9. You shall not bare false witness against your neighbor
#10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house/possessions.

No matter how angry you are you do not have the RIGHT to break these commandments and lead your flock into breaking them also!

We are to be Christ like, and this man is not acting Christ like. You do name curse your own country, you speak blessing over it. Obama is right that word have meaning, to bad he and his pastor don't understand that.

Vorian.

mldogg (your 9:10am post)
I think your characterization (colorfully written as it is) of republicans is dead wrong. Do you know any? I'm not one, but that is not a mentality that I would attribute to any republican I know, or any democrat for that matter. I'm talking "most folks", not extreme bigots, which you can find on both sides of the fence.

The "plantation" characterization you present is more often attributed to liberal thinking, because it's the intrinsic result of many of their policies (in many cases unintended--the result of naivete about unintended consequences for those they seek to help).

I think the liberal view tends to be "let me help you with handouts", and the conservative view is "you're better than that, come work alongside me". The liberal view is "I gotta give you a fish" (underlying message: because you can't do it on your own), while a conservative would lean more toward teaching people to fish for themselves. To me, that's more respectful.

Look: I think anyone ought to be genuinely saddened by the fact that some blacks choose on sundays to listen to a pastor who tells them how oppressed they are by the white man. And make no mistake: he himself has a stake in keeping them believing that--which makes him more an example of your characterization than any white republican I've ever heard of.

MDogg
"let's keep talking about Reverand Wright - after all - it's SOOOO relevant!"

You're damn right, it's relevant. Obama didn't have a father figure growing up. From all indications, Wright had filled that void, being his spiritual leader and mentor. Having attended services for 20 years, Obama probalby agrees with much of what Wright have said, you think? If elected President, his governing philosophy will be based on those core values. On foreign policy, he will see the US as the evil one and will cave into any demands of other countries which do not have the best interest of the US in mind. On domestic issues, he will see whiteys as the cause of all the black people's problems and make decisions accordingly.

"God damn America, God damn America". Just words?

Mr. Wright
There is no excuse for Mr. Wright's behavior. He is influencing people with his words. He is in the pulpit but who is this church worshipping?

Michelle was there
While Barack said he wasnt there for the Revs' comments I guess Michelle was. It would explain her comments that America is a mean country and she wasnt proud of her country. I guess a Princeton education can't protect you from the influence of Rev. Wright.

MDogg

"There is no excuse for Mr. Wright's behavior. He is influencing people with his words."

I don't worry about the adults in the congregation, because they already have their minds made up. The ones I am conerned about are the children who have listened to all that hate speech all those years.

Race relations in our country.

I disagree with Obama on many issues, yet this speech open up dialogue that could transcend race relations in our country.

I was very touched by his story about his white grandmother. I am Jewish and my wife is Christian and her grandparents made comments with similar insensitive type tone about Jews in front of me. Yet when they were alive they treated me like their own son.

I had many mix feelings about what they said and how they open their hearts to me. It was comforting to know and refreshing that America can have this real conversation about race and religion.

Obama
I actually thought Obama's speech was pretty good. It was just the wrong time to give it. His credibility is gone.

Unfortunately, there is always going to be a racial divide in this country. When it is acceptable to listen to divisiveness from the pulpit of all places, we have no chance of coming together.

MDoggg says, "Your sense of history is appaling. If you're white and your family has been in America for more than a generation or two, you profitted off the discrimination of blacks."

Both my grandparents immigrated from Norway to Idaho. How have I profited off the discrimination of blacks? Back up your accusations with facts, MDoggg, or shut up.

what bothers me is
the timing - Wright makes his "America had it coming!!!" speech on September 16, 2001.

No matter WHERE bo was on that day there is no way he will ever convince me or millions of others that he didn't know about that speech.

6 1/2 years later the speech becomes public knowledge. Suddenly bo denounces it.

The timing?

MDoggg
Now who's using stereotypes?

Like Hal/Robert, you also have a comprehension problem. The threat thing was GEORGE's conclusion. Since you weren't there, HTF would you know?

"Obama was the ONLY candidate to talk about going into Pakistan to capture bin laden - you rmember him - the guy who plotted 9/11. And republicans called him inexperienced and headstrong. Now they say he'll fold to our enemies."

Talk is cheap, just like yesterday's speech. In his three years in Senate, what has he done substantively to end the war besides talk? Did he lead the charge to defund the war? As for Pakistan, Dems are now OK with unilateral invasion of a sovereign nation? A suggetion like that toward one of our allies in an unstable region is just the kind of inexperience you alluded to.

Wrong again, Lilly
Most anybody with any common sense knows Obama can't justify his relationship with Wright if he truly disagrees with Wright's hateful, inflammatory rhetoric.

It's also hard to swallow that Obama didn't absorb Wright's rhetoric. Did he really sit there and listen to hate speech Sunday after Sunday but was not influenced by it? Only if Obama admits what's probably true -- he joined the church to further is political career and he's not really that close to Wright -- can those claims be believable. But Obama has already painted himself into a corner and can't admit that.

I don't think MDoggg can handle your facts. Why don't you shoot another one at him.

In the military RACISM isnt accepted but on the civilian side theres problems.

The enemy doesnt care if you are white or black you are AMERICAN.

Most racism comes out at election times and WHY?

Because it SELLS and MSM makes a living off of peoples problems.

If I told you if you voted for me I will give you this or that if elected. Now if I told you that if you dont vote for me then the BIG BAD REPS will take everything away from you then how would you vote?

The problem isnt Racism its people wanting there to be RACISM. Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton would go broke if they didnt push RACISM. Where are they when 2 Black males rape a white women and are gpoing to jail for it. NOWHERE, but where are they when 2 black men are treated different than 2 white men IN YOUR FACE. If they were truly against RACISM they would be there when all types of problems are going on with the Black man not just when they think theres RACISM

The Great Divider
Obama's speech was excellent. The problem is that it divided this country more than people realize. After reading the previously posted blogs, the speech had the impact I expected it to have. White people were slammed in the speech time and time again. It is obvious that he does not particularly care for white people and that he feels they are still the root of all evil when it comes to the progression of blacks.

Blacks have every opportunity white people do. They have the right and freedom to have a family, go to church, support themselves, value human life, etc. Blacks also have the same ability to decide between right and wrong.

He had an opportunity to unify the country; however, he chose to divide it more along racial lines. He had a great chance to inform blacks that they and they alone are responsible for themselves. He should have told them that they need to support and be actively involved with their children. He should have told them that they could improve their lives by taking their education seriously. He should have told them to get off their lazy butts and get jobs. But no, he chose to basically blame the shortcomings of the blacks on the white people. I am sick to death of white people being blamed for the blacks' lot in life.

If he thought he was going to help undecided voters make their choice. He did! The Reagan Democrats and the middle class working white men more than likely made their choices yesterday. Unfortunate for him, they are probably not going his way. He cannot profess to be a unifier but come across as a divider. It will not work! Can you say flip/flop!

Mixed Feelings of a Mulatto
I get the idea that most of you have no idea what it's like to actually BE of MIXED heritage. I am fortunate enough to not be one of you ppl. Do you know how ludicrous you sound when you call Barack a racist? he was raised by 2 white women & 1 white man, his BLACK father having left him as a child. He was educated in the the most heralded (aka whitest) institutions in the country and I would bet money that this man has more WHITE friends than black, if for no other reason than he hangs out in predominatly white establishments. Every person with a drop of black blood in them knows an old timer with a bit of a racist tint to their views, which the reverend wright obviously has. However, that does not make him a racist, no more so than knowing a criminal of any sort makes you an accomplice. If you were to be honest with yourself, you might be able to understand why... Barack, in my view, is a healing candidate. The only real weakness (it's sad that this is a political weakness) in his game is that he is HALF black, and so failing to breach his armor anywhere else, the Clintons, went for the old tried and true, Beware the crazy darky approach!!! He has experienced racism from BOTH sides of the aisle, and rather than choose one to spite the other, he took the road less traveled and is trying to bring them together... can't you at least give him credit for that? I'll leave with a fun fact, 4 of the most influential presidents in this country had LESS formal gov't experience than Barack before they took the reigns: T Roosevelt, F Roosevelt, W. Wilson, & G Washington... think on that.

God damn America
I recently watched a program on CNN about the upbringing of Muslim children in Middle East mosques. They showed video tapes of spiritual leaders telling parents to always get their children to say "Death to America" before they go to bed every night. Sounds like Reverend Wright, doesn't it?

HA HA HA you are a lost soul you need to go and see PASTOR WRIGHT so he can get you back on track. Oh im sorry you are supporting a REP for President and that might not work becuase everyone knows that ONLY REPS ARE RACIST. HA HA

This is Obama's Swiftboat

It doesn't matter what the devil his heritage is. No one is going to excuse his way into the White House. He can take private psychiatry on his own with our taxpayer dollar out of his own salary.

Neither the Mrs. nor the B. Hussein has any more ability to be US pres. than my dog.

That's what puzzled me. I thought the entire goal of yesterday's speech was to sway the undecided voters. While he made the base proud, some calling it a Lincoln-like speech, he did further damage to his image as the uniter by lecturing the "intolerant whiteys".

Yeah, it's called committing a crime.

Obama has wonderful writers...
that craft his speeches. Wonder who they are. I am sure they at one time were selling ice cubes to Eskimos.

I would like to hear Obama speak without notes, without pre-written speeches and without access to the questions to be answered. That would be the measure of the man. What we have now is the measure of his speech writers.

Another measure of who Obama is would be his lovely wife, who has just found a small reason to be proud of America. Seems like Mrs. Obama has absorbed much of Mr. Wrights venom. Could Obama himself have avoided what his wife could not? I think not!

The Truth

FROM TOM BAXTER AT THE AJC

When W.E.B. Dubois introduced the concept of double consciousness, on the eve of the 20th Century, he was talking about the dilemma of African-Americans in his own time, of “measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity.”

Those aren’t words Obama or those of his generation would use to describe their inner selves today. But in an ever more hyphenated world, Dubois’ idea of seeing things through different lenses in the same set of eyes has proven to be intellectually elastic, and useful for talking about many aspects of modern life.

The Obama speech could be read as a new – and to those used to thinking of a fundamentally divided America, surprising – twist on the concept of double consciousness. Its critical section is the one in which he relates his divided feelings about the black minister who baptized his children and the white grandmother who helped raise him, and who both expressed racial sentiments he rejected. To understand its importance fully, we have to think of this in a generational perspective.

ucanthandletruth
I don't think Obama is a racist. I think he showed poor judgment. "White America" will never understand how "Black America" feels. Obama is suppose to be a uniter, but how can he unite people when he associates with people like Rev. Wright? Wright preached about "Black America", not "All America". Our President is suppose to represent "All America". By being a member of a black separatist church for +20 years, Obama chose to represent "Black America". This is how the average person sees it.

Gambler5112
Yeah and there are reasons why certain people are more likely to be involved, caught and convicted of said crime (whether or not they were actually involved). It's called the paper bag test... Try getting dressed up in black face one time & driving through the nicest part of your neighborhood. Look lost and see how quickly the cops help you find the nearest exit (if you're lucky) or cell... I know racism isn't your problem, seeing as how you're a part of the winners in the racial struggle sweepstakes. However, that does not give you the right to dismiss the fact that it is a problem.

Deacon
Obviously you are not following the news. You would know Obama wrote that speech largely by himself (not that it matters to you; I'm sure you'll hate him all the same).

Peggy Noonon, Ronald Reagan's scriptwriter (she wrote 2 of his major scripts) thought Obama's speech was a "breakthrough". She praised Obama's thetoric; she said "I was glad a grown-up could talk to other grown-ups about this topic."

There are a whole lot of children on this thread who obviously want to be pandered to regarding race relations (that's why you all read some TH columnists: they pander, without ever challenging your assumptions, which might upset many of your latent prejudices).

ucanthandletruth
"I know racism isn't your problem, seeing as how you're a part of the winners in the racial struggle sweepstakes. However, that does not give you the right to dismiss the fact that it is a problem."

Do you live in America? Everyone has the right to dismiss anything they want. Race is only a problem for losers. If the shoe fits. I work with mostly blacks in Memphis. You know what? They don't see life as you do. But, when I leave work and hit the streets of Memphis, many think like you. They are all oppressed by the white man. Never mind that they conceived a baby at 16. Never mind that they dropped out of school at 15. Never mind that all their after-school time is spent at the gym and not on the books. Never mind that they love the bottle more than their family. As been said many times before by others, why is it that Caribbean blacks don't seem to have these problems? I believe they don't look for excuse, as you do, are take on the world head on.

Flyfisher
You do make some good points. However, I think it is a matter of perspective. Reverend Wright speaks to a portion of the black consciousness, the portion that is angry about Jim Crowe & being oppressed and those who used anger as fuel to "move on up to that de-luxe apartment in the sky." This is in know way a separatist movement, but rather an integral part of the black community dialogue since the panthers v vicelords, martin v malcom. Yes this is a part of his heritage, but it doesn't define his outlook. Rather it is just one more viewpoint he has insight on. A truly racist man wouldn't act the way he does, or surround himself with the ppl he has. If he were truly that influenced by the Rev. Wrights inflammatory comments isn't it fair to say that he would have run a much different campaign? Maybe instead of influencing him negatively, as most like to assume, it gave him a chance to understand where the hurt between black & white lies & some perspective on how to mend it...

ucanthandletruth
Can you please explain this statement:

"Do you know how ludicrous you sound when you call Barack a racist? he was raised by 2 white women & 1 white man, his BLACK father having left him as a child."

I am truly glad about one truth that has come out through all of this. The fact that many, many blacks can and are just as biggotted and hate-filled as they accuse whites of being. This has proven that white is NOT the only shade of racist. It may or may not change anything in race relations. But as they say the proverbial cat is out of the bag on that one. The dnc-liberals have lived on identity politics for years. I hope now that they die by it. As, Ms. Parker indicates and even Obama somewhat alluded too...there has been tremendous change in this country in the last 50+ years from our history of slavery and Jim Crow. It will NOT continue as long as people like Wright, Obama continue to use the bloody pulpit to preach and endorse hatred.

ucanthandletruth
"Maybe instead of influencing him negatively, as most like to assume, it gave him a chance to understand where the hurt between black & white lies & some perspective on how to mend it...".

OK, I can possibly see that. But the big question is, can the average voter see that?

Bravo, Ms. Parker
You are correct. What Obama did, and fairly successfully, was to divert attention away from the fact that he has sat in Rev. Wright's congregation for 20 years listening to Wright spew his racial hatred -- and toward racism in America. He re-ignited the racist fires and made the discussion about race, NOT about his 20-years of benign-neglect behavior. And in doing so, he showed his true colors which are politician politician politician through and through.

Deacon, BTW, I agree with you. Obama (regardless of what naive Will thinks) has magnificent speech writers. Among the best I have ever heard. And he himself is an accomplished orator. It is one of his finest skills.

But -- I heard him when he was interviewed by a Fox News reporter last week, and he stumbled and faltered quite badly when he had to think on his feet. He is NOT an impromptu speaker, and that is exactly why he doesn't do press conferences. What he does -- and what is always the easier option -- is to deliver canned, prepared speeches where he will not be required to answer without prepared responses.

The guy embodies an empty suit. And now, a racist empty suit.

ucanthandletruth
"If he were truly that influenced by the Rev. Wrights inflammatory comments isn't it fair to say that he would have run a much different campaign?"

Yeah, right. If Obama agrees with the anti-America, anti-white comments, then he would have opened up his campaign by saying "God damn America. America is no better than Al Qaeda". Get real. That is no way to get into the White House. How naive can you be? If a man harbors such hate, and I do not know what is in Obama's heart, do you think he'll reveal any of it in his campaign? No, you tell everyone you are a uniter, not a divider. When David Duke ran for Congress, he did not say blacks are inferior, which he truly believes.

Hey funny thing, have you ever considered that A. your co-workers aren't totally honest with you or B. they just think you would understand so why bother? I did mispeak when I said you don't have the right. You do have the right to ignore anything you want. But as a grown citizen, who I assume prides yourself on being responsibile, do you think it's a good idea to disenfranchise a large portion of the population? Do you think that a free nation should be the leader in prisoner pop. by numbers & % (which we are)? Do you honestly believe that the circumstances a person is grown into do not effect the ultimate outcome of their life (reference to those 16 y/o who you seem to spend alot of time with)? Do you beleive that the state should, if not help, at the least not hurt a populations attempt to uplift itself (something that has occured frequently throughout OUR history to browns)? In a republic it's about asking the right questions, not just accepting the given answers.
FYI I am part Caribbean Black and very successful by all the conventional means we define it with in this country. The only people that can say, "Race is only a problem for losers." are the people who have never had that problem.

P.S. You can find me in Philadelphia.

After reading your posts, it is obvious you feel racial hatred and discrimination in our country is running rampant and you also believe Obama has the perspective on the, “hurt between black & white lives & [has] some perspective on how to mend it...”.

Please, do tell, can you give us a general idea of what you believe it would take to “mend” our racial division? What would it take to get every black man and woman (or at least the overwhelming majority) to declare, “Racism and discrimination in America is now a dead issue!”?

Working Class Whites: Affirmative Action
Working Class Whites: Affirmative Action takes from YOU and YOUR children. This character would further enshrine the victim culture and affirmative action for Blacks. Upper class White libs don't care, THEIR kids will still get the good jobs and schools. You and your kids are dirty crackers to them anyway. Don't fall for it.

Gambler5112
but Duke didn't run on a Uniter Platform, nor did he speak of getting rid of poverty and leveling the playing field for ALL. Obama would have run his campaign more like Al Sharpton & J Jackson, had he truly believed all that Wright had to say, which he hasn't. But good attempt at a soundbyte.

Thanks man...now I'm gonna have that damn song stuck in my head all day.

ucanthandletruth
The truth is that while he was raised by his white grandparents (I understand his mother according to his book, refused to acknowledge she was American, she HATED her own country.) She raised him from birth to age 10, then he went to the grandparents in Hawaii with it's
diverse racial population. I don't think Grandma deserved being thrown under the proverbial bus, because you don't cut down the racial mixture of a child you love. My adopted son is a troubled man but we NEVER referred to race and he's Puerto Rican, Black and Caucasian.
So I'm not buying that, it's another lie. But
having said that, Wright being a father figure is perfectly plausible. We had a couple of young men whose Dad abandoned them at ages three
and my husband became a father figure to them in their teens.
And when these young boys find a hero they absorb
everything that surrogate tells them, they learn
to emulate the man that's been such an influence in their lives, for good or bad. These father
figures fill a deep void in these boys lives,
and Wright has a lot to answer for even though
Obama was a grown man when they met. A Pastor
has to answer to God for the souls he's responsible for, Wright may look up one day
and find a hand writing on the wall

What's American About...
What's American About...Our country being in a war we shouldn't be in and spending 12 Billion a month. What's American About...Last month we lost 63,000 jobs by rough estimates. What's American About...A Financial firm receiving a 30 Billion dollar bailout when the economy is suffering. What's American About...A tanker contract goes to a foreign country instead being here where it would provide jobs and help the economy. What's American About...Blue collar jobs experiencing massive layoffs and/or being shipped abroad. What's American About...People losing their homes at an alarming rate. What's American About..focusing on what a black preacher has said and totally ignoring the fact that's it's not a Black, Hispanic, Asian or Native American man but a WHITE man who put us in this position in the first place! What's American About that?

To question 1, I'll say it again. Don't commit the crime and you won't go to jail. Very simple. To question 2, government has done its part. It abolished slavery 143 years ago. It implemented affirmative action 47 years ago. That is all they should do. It is up to the individual to take the ball from there. How many more years of affirmative action do you want? Another 50 years? The Constitution only guarantees the pursue of happiness. It never promised happiness.

Take a breath. George W. Bush isn't up for re-election.

Gambler5112
Funny how you left out the part how your black cowworkers could be less than honest. As for affirmative action, one of my earlier posts said it should be about wealth not race at this point (something I hope you can agree with but...) As for crime, yes criminals should be punished (i even believe in the death penalty) however, I also do believe that there are things that the gov't could do to help the situation, let's start with channeling, just 1 billion from the war into basic CHILDREN's HEALTHCARE & EDUCATION. You don't think it's a misappropriation of our money to put it more into wars (based on lies and egos) than our own infrastructure? There are reasons that America is lagging further and further behind in basic education and health services.

"David Duke didn't run on a Uniter Platform, nor did he speak of getting rid of poverty and leveling the playing field for ALL. Obama would have run his campaign more like Al Sharpton & J Jackson, had he truly believed all that Wright had to say, which he hasn't."

"Getting rid of poverty". I love that phrase. It's code for income redistribution. That's what everyone has been saying, that Obama is a far-left socialist. Now, that will really unite America, especially the middle-class working Americans who pay most of the taxes. HaHaHaHa!! As to your comment that Obama is no Sharpton or Jackson, wrong again. Each black candidate learned from the previous one to what NOT to say in order to get elected. Jackson was very divisive and was never a factor. Sharpton toned down the "black, black, black" rhetoric and had a little better success than Jackson. Obama took it one step further. He tried to leave out "black" all together and called himself a uniter, but it is the same candidate in different packaging. Twenty years in a separatist church contradicts everything he is preaching. Same old, same old.

Tea Party
I do agree with your assessment on children and commend your adoption. However, it seems liek you could you agree that there is a difference between the child's tendency to deify their heroes and a grown-ups tendency to admire theirs. I never said Barack hasn't been influenced I just dispute the kind of influence ppl are trying to assert.

Full of it

Obama is full of glib jiv liberal pap. The media liberals will lap it up and line up for the Kool Aid.

Reveal the Puppeteer
Read Luke 4:1-8, Obama, and then realize that it is not possible to cling to the Puppeteer and simultaneously do what Jesus did when offered the same deal the Puppeteer has offered you.

Or if you really did sleep through church for 20 years, get a copy of Lord of the Rings and check out how Saruman fared when he tried sharing power with Sauron.

Guess we know now the identity of the Puppeteer.

Gambler5112
If by income resdistribution you mean not funding a $12 billion a day war... Funny how you have lost the fact that Barack is no more black than the shade grey. Separatist? Do you even know what that word implies? What exactly did the church separate from? and in what way is it trying to establish its own autonomous region? You seem to be a hype man, focusing on your points instead of the questions i pose. Same old... ignorance that is...

Gambler5112, Flyfisher, Icedog, & Others
Time and an open & honest dialogue are the only cure. For the record I don't think it's rampant just more alive than most of us would readily acknowledge. Also for the record, I despise ppl who make a living off of stoking white guilt.
Truthfully, racism will never be totally eradicated unless we all end up having mixed babies, which is highly unlikely. Even if that did happen, we're human and we'd find another reason to oppress/fight/hate, we always do. It is my hope that we can move beyond the race debate & move into the poverty debate, because that is where we need progress now more than ever. I just regret how race, and all the s**t around it, has gotten thrown into this election.

As for my earlier statement. In this world I would be an idiot to say it’s not possible that he is a racist and that being raised in a white family protects him from it. However, being raised in a similar situation I would have to say I don’t think it is likely. When you love your mother, which I would hope we can all agree he does, and you wake up every day to a loving white family, how could you hate white people in general? You might hate a couple (i.e. Falwel) but I’d be willing to bet he hates some black people too (i.e. Farrakan).

Also, I do not think that the avg white American will see it this way (once again a matter of perspective) but that does not mean we shouldn’t shout it from the mountaintops.

desperate repubs/cons saw a opening
or at least thought they saw an opening to destroy and derail the prez candidacy of dem front runner and "empty suit" Sen. Barack Obama by trying to use "guilt by association" with his mentor the Rev. Wright by "morphing" the two into one and making Rev. Wright inflammatory racial rhetoric
come out of the mouth of Sen. Obama...

Well, after Sen. B. Obama's brilliant, very accurate speech yesterday on race relations in the U.S. and clearing the air about his relationship with Rev. Wright I'd say without a doubt the repubs/cons desperate strategy didnt work and they are back to square one and have to figure out another way to reload the RNC SLIME MACHINE which shot its wad a missed by a longshot...lmao

You are too easy. No, I trust my co-workers to be 100% honest. I have no reason to doubt them, especially the ones who go to the drag strip with me and eat out at the local seafood buffet. They run into occasional discrimination, as we all do, but they see it as just an inconvenience, not an excuse to blame whiteys for all their ills.

Typical liberal thinking, more money cures all. If something doesn't work, pump more money into it. Tell me. How does pumping billions more into healthcare and education for this generation of youths help make the next generation become more self-reliant and less dependent on government? More and better teachers, smaller class sizes, more computers, better school buildings, none of that will mean squat if the student doesn't want to learn.

As to the war, I have always said we should have come home the minute Saddam was ousted, but that's another topic for another day.

Will writes:
'Deacon Obviously you are not following the news. You would know Obama wrote that speech largely by himself (not that it matters to you; I'm sure you'll hate him all the same).'

Ah yes spoken like a true liberal. You have to accuse someone else of something that diminishes them so you can feel superior. Sorry to bust your bubble Will but I don't hate Obama. I just don't trust him.

Self Examination is a Hard Pill...
Self Examination is a hard pill to swallow! Most people won't even acknowledge that they have racial bias'. They just look at their own situation and not what would be the greater good. The reality is only one race has ever been President! The problems we are going thru now were not caused by a black preacher. Who has caused the most damage to our country, George Bush or Rev. Wright? It's George Bush! The focus needs to be on the current problems, we as a country, are going thru and nothing else. If you can't even consider or have the ability to bring the country together and speak out on controversial issues you don't deserve to be President. Barack is the only one trying to do that!

Study of Obama
I disagree. In the future, I believe students will study how someone can try to fool some of the people all of the time and fail dramatically.
The implosion of the Obama Drama and his jettison from the fold is coming.

Obama/Billary
Maybe now is the time for all American's who love their country, despite it's faults, to come together, both Democrat and Republican, and not listen to party politic's but vote for the lesser of three evils. McCain was/is certainly not my choice - he was fostered upon the American people as was Obama. As far as Hillary is concerned this has been her ambition for years...a pact made with Bill. She has proven to be the typical Clinton, lying, and corrupt. Obama obviously is misguided, and has obviously very poor judgement - how can you stay in a church for twenty years and not be influenced by the hate mongering pastor? We cannot afford to have a President with questioning values. What exactly does he mean when he says, "Change"?Voting leaves us McCain - at least he loves his country.

I don't believe the basic American is racist - leave that up to the racist pimps - Jesse Jackson, Sharpton, Farrakhan...who continue to stir the pot.

Left Angle
Keep thinking that way. Your perception is skewed toward Obama. Most people including many, many Democrats aren't buying it. The writing is on the wall.

"Separatist? Do you even know what that word implies? What exactly did the church separate from?"

I had to look it up on Webster.

Separatist: Somebody who favors keeping members of racial, religious, gender, or cultural groups separate.

Reverend Wright has very inflammatory things to say about white people. He has very inflammatory things to say about Jews. His words and actions (visiting Libya with Farrakhan) discourages the attendance of non-blacks in his church. When Greta Van Sustren on Fox wanted someone to interview some of the congregation at the church, she had to seek out Ted Williams, a black, to do it, fearing rejection or even possibe physical harm by some of the members. After all, their pastor just resigned due to white pressure. Yeah, I say that is about as close to separatist as you can get without a sign at the door saying "No honkies allowed".

jabobceo
Speak for yourself. If you're a racist then that's your problem. But don't start foisting your psychobabble and the broad brush of ignorance on the rest of us.

...desperate racist/liberals see nothing...and know even less about truth. Unfortunately, there is nothing to laugh about in that.

jabobceo
After this Wright thing, many are questioning whether Obama is that person to bring the country together.

Whose fault is it?
No one who is worthy of entering the White House would attend a church for twenty years whose pastor preached racial hatred and divisiness.

This is unacceptable behavior.

Today, there is a group of people keeping some African Americans down. These people constantly tell African Americans that racism is the cause of all their problems; therefore, it's never their fault.

These people don't care about African Americans; they only want their vote.

jacobceo
and then you woke up.

Whats America all about, its about Black people quiting school and blaming it on the white man, What is America all about, 8 out of 10 Black children being born today without a FATHER, What is America all about, its about giving Black athletes scholorships by what they do on the court not what they do off the court, what is America all about its about creating programs to KEEP the Black people on the PLANTATION, Thanks to LIBS, What is America all about, its about being resonsible for your own actions not the actions of others. Whats America all about, its working hard for what you have not what you think white people owe you. Whats America all about, its about had enough of all this BS. If America is so bad then have the black people of America raise their hands if they want to go back to countries in AFRICA that sold their families to the white man for Trinkets, satin and BOOZE. Then lets ask everyone WHAT AMERICA IS ALL ABOUT.

AMERICA, AMERICA, AMERICA

flyfisher: wishful thinking....
On a scale of one to ten as far as damage to Obama is concerned I'd rate this bs as a 1.5.

the only people having orgasms about this bs are desperate repubs/cons, who were not going to vote for him in the first place. It has no traction with dems/libs or independents...

instead of worrying so much about the dems you repubs/cons got your own problems:

a highly unpopular incumbent repub prez bush who has done immeasurable damage to the republican brand.

an equally unpopular unending Iraq War.

a bad ecomonomy

a repub nominee in McCain that base conservatives clearly detest.

a think of this even if Obama does go down you got Hillary and Bill Clinton to deal with and you know they have a proven record of defeating repubs/con in genral elections and kicking repub con arse.

so who do you really want to face in prez election 08?

jacobceo
Barack was hiding it until he got caught. Then he had to say something about it. Not that he wanted to. Theres a big difference

white guilt
Do you suppose the topic of reparations will ever be broached in interviews with Obama? It seems that might be the next step toward healing the intense pain and agony today's African-Americans have had dished out to them by people who lived 150-300 years ago.

If you stay in outlandishly expensive private schools (the tuition for which is paid by your racist granny) and obtain advanced college degrees you, too, can become the candidate of hope and change.

Or ignore your homeys' accusing you of "acting white," stay in the woeful public school system until you graduate; and don't get (or get someone) pregnant before you're married; and show up for work when you get a job; and if you live in a big city with more than one church of each denomination, LEAVE the one whose pastor is a ranting anti-American racist and find a more sensible place to worship.

The Chicago Democratic Machine may not open any doors for you, but then you won't have to make embarrassing speeches either. Reparations or responsibility.

Bob C
You're exactly the racist individual I speak about. To be in a racist society and not acknowledge that some things bother you on some level proves you're not in touch with what's going on in the world.

The latest Rasmussen poll had Obama's lead over Clinton declined 6 points in the last week. If Republicans are not going to vote for him anyway, as you said, and all the Dems base haven't changed their mind, the 6 points must be independents. Can you handle the truth?

robert
re your post to truth seeker-you can't see the comparision jfk/bho?
your "medical" is rescinded- you're blind !
that is if you have a medical

Left Angle
Did you look at the latest poll, showing McCain beating both Hillary and Obama? Independents are the key to the White House. Independents are taking a whiff of Obama, and not liking what they now smell. The Wright thing is just the beginning.

Isn't it amazing, with all the bad things you just mentioned, McCain is ahead in the polls? The Repubs should be losing in a landslide. The Dems have a perfect political storm this year. But your two leading candidates are so flawed, the electorate is turning to McCain.

Keep dreaming. Inside, any honest Dem is scared to death of what is happening. If you guys can't win this year, good luck ever winning.

MDOGGGG
My family is legally immigrated from Europe. My mother is first generation born here, my father second generation born. We have lived in the North forever. Not only did we not profit from slaves, we lost relatives who died fighting to free them Where do WE go to get OUR reparations?

Great article. Our choices will be limited this election cycle. I, for one, will never vote for the D's.

flyfisher/gambler: a response
the only poll that counts is the one that takes
place at the end of the election.

Chuck
You're showing your racist side! The problems going on today were not caused by a Black, Hispanic, Asian or Native American and that's a fact! But a Barack is trying to bring the country together.

If money is important
Why do countries like Japan spend far less and do much better? It isn't the money, it is the system and you can't change the system because the teachers and their unions aren't interested in education, but job protection (like any union). And the DP in part is owned by the teacher's unions (NEA and AFT)..so nothing that matters will change except for pouring more money down the drian. Atlanta Public Schools have some of the highest per pupil spending in the US and yet it is one of the worst school systems in the country.

One high school when the SAT was based on 1600 had an average high score of less than 700 and you get 400 for your name if I recall. Only one HS had a 1000+ in the entire district.

I agree. I haven't seen this kind of self-destruction since 1972. Like today, we had a very unpopular Nixon and an even more unpopular war. The economy was in the tank. The White House was the Dems to lose, and they self-destruct by nominating a far-left, polarizing George McGovern. The result was a landslide victory for the Republicans. Will history repeat itself?

I Wonder..
I wonder what would happen if a major presidential candidate was discovered to have a pastor who baptized his children, preached about Aryan superiority, called for the extermination of mud peoples, and said the Holocaust was a Jewish lie.

I think you will have a stroke from worrying before then.

Kathleen says it all
Kathleen Parker has said everything that needs to be said, and done so perfectly in one column. This will be an issue right through the general election, assuming the Dems don't come up with a way to unload Obama before then. He might end up underneath Hillary yet(on the ticket).

Gambler5112
First: more money doesn't definitely fix a problem but it is more helpful than starving the system (which we are doing now). Even you would have to admit that there is some merit to the fact that if we paid teachers more, we would get better candidates for the job, because this is after all a capitalist society. Better teachers would lead to a better classroom environment (as better LEADERS do in any situation) which would encourage and enable more children to learn. Granted there are always problem children, but we could lessen their impact in a classroom setting if resources weren't constantly being stripped away for other purposes. Better education always leads to more self-reliance, or at the least a better chance to be self-reliant, just look at the avg lifetime incomes for non hs v hs v college grads, you don't think all that extra cash as you go up the scale leads to more self-reliance?
As for the kill whitey comment, lol, look man, It is a fact that winners write the rules. In this world, whites have been the historic victors. Am I saying that there is a conscious plot by the white man to continually oppress brown ppl... NO. Am i saying that there is a latent current of racism running throughout this country that has an influence on the day to day lives of people... YES. (Btw when have you encountered racism in a meaningful way - just curious). As for your friends, look man, you will rarely hear blacks expressing to whites their true feelings on racism. 1 because it's counterproductive (a la wright) 2 because it's like speaking english to a chinese farmer, it just doesn't translate. I know you feel different and you're entitled to that but how do you know the club rules if you've never been invited to a meeting? but ahh those good ol days at the track ;)

Gambler5112 pt 2
As for wright, he doesn't want to keep whites out, no no, rather what he wants is for whites to let blacks in (which to mind has happened in many ways, albeit incomplete ones). his views might discourage ppl of particular persuasions to not want to come, but he never says they can't (he took the sign down in 83). All he wants is a seat for blacks at what he sees as an all white table (a view that i don't agree with but i do understand).

As for Fox's take, Pah-Lease. FOX! We're talking about Fox! They would do anything to bump the ratings & disparage a dem. If they can do both at the same time all the better. I would take anything on that network with a grain of salt.

"If Obama shot his pastor dead and burned down Trinity Baptist Church, conservatives still would not be satisfied".
That's right, we wouldn't. There can be no EXCUSE for a major presidential candidate associating with this kind of filth for over 20 years. Even Oprah stormed out that church in horror for Pete’s sake.
To stay and listen and cherish Wright for over 20 years means Obama BELIEVES this filth.
No amount of empty rhetoric and political snake-oil salesmanship will suffice.
Conversely, unlike liberals, we would reject John McCain if he spent 20+ years listening to David Duke's sermonizing.

And MD/MG
Few people living in the south today have any Confederate roots and even those have them few are from slaveowners. Only 25% of southerners in 1860 had slaves. There were also black slaveholders--do they get paid or have to pay?

Does Colin Powell get a check--his family is from Jamacia?

If blacks today who were never slaves (nor their parents and for most you have to go back to their great great grandparents to find a slave) get them how about poor southerners who had their farms burned, how about those whose great great great grandmothers were raped by the Union army? How about those whose family members were Chinese railroad workers--do they get a check?

He made a statement that IMUS should never have another job for what he said about NAPPY HEAD HOS and the country went wild why?

Because he was a WHITE MAN, now a Black Pastor preaches HATRED for and TO AMERICA and its OK becuase of RACISM..

BULLSH'T

This is why there will be RACISM in AMERICA foreever. Its OK for the Black Man to say how he feels but GOD forbid A WHITE MAN say the same.

When Robertson said that CHAVEZ should be assinated for what he has done you LIBS went BESERK and all you could do was Blast the RIGHT WING CHRISTIANS on TH, that no man of the cloth should preach that to noone. It's a win/ win for McCain.

You can deny it all you want, but this Wright thing is going to continue to haunt Obama all the way to November.

"As for Fox's take, Pah-Lease. FOX! We're talking about Fox! They would do anything to bump the ratings & disparage a dem."

I watch CNN as much as I do Fox. Do you? It's not a matter of what Fox says. I was pointing out that they had to send a black man, Ted Williams, who is normally their crime expert on the show and not a street reporter, to do an interview at Wright's church. Something is very wrong when whites are afraid to enter a church or think that maybe a white reporter would be shunned, especially if the church is the one that the presidential front-runner attends.

Flyfisher
"I don't think you understand Independents. Obama did more damage in his speech to Indys, than he did to shore up his base."

Alot of independents are your average, non-political person. The last week, I have heard water fountain talk about Obama's pastor and his assoication with him. These people knows little about the issues, but they will not vote for Obama after the latest revelation. Those are the voters who will hurt Obama. BTW, fly fishing for trout is good in the western Carolina mountain streams.

Gambler5112
I think you are spot on. Independents are the key, and they will not put up with this.

For the Dems, this whole situation is just like a teenager getting pregnant. First there is the denial phase. Then when they realize it's true...shear horror hits them in the face.

I live in Idaho, which flows with milk, honey, and trout.

Too bad Townhall wasn't around during
the 1960's. The same people berating Barack's speech today would have no trouble at all berating Martin Luther King Jr.s speeches if it were politically expedient.

I wonder. If Obama wins the presidency, do all these people continue berating the president? So many conservatives love to pat themselves on the back & rhetoricaly call each other "great americans".... These "patriots" are more obsessed with the symbols: with wearing the patriotic pins, with the flag, with Bibles, than with actual security & a healthy economy.

Will this war cost taxpayers an additional trillion+ dollars during the coming 5 years? NO PROBLEM! says the "true" conservative. It's only money. Does the continued american presence in the middle east foment resentment & muslim anger & actually make americans less safe? What about this recession? Oh, that's all left-wing media hype! says the "true" conservative. There is not "recession"! And we're winning the war on terror!

Then the "true" conservative searches for his patriotic pin to wear. And searches for another "true" conservative to slap on the back & call a "great american". Some ritual.

Simple Fact
If you can't energize your base, which McCain can't, you don't win general elections. Polls suck, especially when they're more than 6 months out from the event in question. McCain may end up winning slightly more indys but for a man who has flip-flopped more than kerry (tax cuts, immigration, etc.) do you really think he'll be able to stand the heat when it's all focused on him? I don't. O and one last tidbit, there are more registered dems than reps in this country, and their base is energized. All hillary and this whole situation has done is better prepare obama for the attacks he will face in the general. Since it's out so early, it will probably lessen in importance just because we americans have such short attention spans. O & btw, McCain didn't know the difference between sunnis & shias & who iran was supporting. That's basic. a little too basic to be confusing...

flyfisher: more wishful thinking...
On your part, but what you seem to forget is this:

ALL democrats black, white, orange or polka dot are UNITED by one thing, THAT is defeating REPUBS/CONS in prez/congress elections come Nov 08. It would be a great thing for the U.S. should that happen.

Of course I watch CNN, i also read, Times, Journal, TH (duh), BBC, ZNet, the list goes on.

Of course they sent a black man, logic stands you're more likely to get an honest answer from ppl when you send someone familiar. Wright and his church haven't been associated with physically harming anyone, for race or any other purpose, so whitey need not fear. unless they were afraid they would come down with a case of the dreaded disease blackulitis.

The base will show up for McCain. The thought of either Obama (#1 liberal in the Senate) or Hillary (need I say more) will bring the Repub. base out in force. The 2nd amendment argument before the Supreme Court right now reminds the base of how in the next term, 1 maybe 2 nominations will be made by the next President. I have no worries about the base not showing up. The Independents will be the key again in this election.

Very nicely put
Maybe we missed the boat on the speech event; were there any fainters in the crowd? That should gauge the success – it seems to be his trademark. And he arranges to deliver it in Philadelphia. Seems to be his answer to a major problem is make a speech. Then tells us that it's all up to us? Elect him and all our problems will melt. It reminded me how inexperienced he is.
