Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- They just can't help it. As soon as politicians and pundits cross the South Carolina line, their IQs plummet 20 points.

I reckon the candidates figure if they say really dumb stuff, them lowbrow, redneck yahoos will vote them right into that great big ol' house up in Washington.

Yessiree-Bo, we're gonna rustle up some squirrels, suck on some hay straw, fry up some catfish, eat some Moon Pies and tell lies about how Diddy killed that cockfight cheat with a deer knife, and git us some dadgum votes.

Ho-hum, who has the remote?

Some of those yokels, like yokels everywhere, may be dumber 'n a box o' rocks, but they're smart enough to know what the newcomers want and, aiming to please, seem determined to give it to them. Good 'n' folksy-like.

Thus, media folk flying in have hardly touched down before they've spotted a real Confederate battle flag and discovered a genuine, gun-totin', pickup-drivin' fool who sounds just like John Edwards on a stump stop in the mill village.

On any other given day, a South Carolinian would have to hire a detective to locate a Confederate flag -- other than the one on the statehouse grounds or flying over a Maurice's Barbecue. Maurice, whose flagship joint happens to be located along the drive from the airport to downtown Columbia, is famous for his mustard-based barbecue sauce and his refusal to remove the flag from his premises (on principle, he'll tell you).

But somehow outsiders stumble right into the same old tired themes and recycled stories. My own theory is that the state keeps a stable of characters (gap teeth optional) on retainer and trots them out when the yankees come to town with their videocams. The rest of the year, Gomer and Gussie count the Canada geese on their estate property and bet on polo ponies.

The cliches are now so entrenched that the interaction of pol, pundit and The People has become a (BEG ITAL)folie a trois(END ITAL) -- a three-way dance of equal madness. Faux bubbas gone goofy. Everyone knows the script and each plays off the other according to stereotype.

What if everyone just stopped?

If there were no race-baiters, would there still be racists?

South Carolina is not without racists, of course. Nor is any other state.

But the South -- and especially South Carolina because of the flag flap and because it hosts the first Southern primary -- remains a quintessentially racist state in the minds of everyone except most of those who live here.

Thus, when pols and pundits cross the state line, they begin thinking racially.

The candidacy of Barack Obama makes race impossible to ignore, obviously. But what about when Republican Mike Huckabee comes to town and gratuitously starts talking about the Confederate flag? What does that mean?

It means that Huckabee -- smart, charming, witty though he may be -- is pandering to an audience that understands that states' rights is code for keeping blacks in their place. This is race-baiting with a wink and a nod, as well as a calculated attempt to steal some of John McCain's thunder.

McCain was confronted with the flag question in 2000: Should a symbol of racist hatred, albeit only for some, wave over a building that belongs to all? The polite and true answer is a simple "no," but back then McCain took the states' rights option. He later said he regretted his answer and believed the flag should come down.

The flag is down, though it is more noticeable now on the statehouse grounds than it was atop the dome. Yet here it comes again, compliments of Huckabee, who recited the litany without cue cards for his Myrtle Beach audience:

"You don't like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag. ... If somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell 'em what to do with the pole. That's what we'd do."

Applause, applause, applause. Scribble, scribble, scribble. Yawn, yawn, yawn.

In 2003, when Howard Dean lamented that the South had to stop obsessing about on race, guns, God and gays, he wasn't necessarily wrong. But it is once again clear that the pols and pundits will have to go first.

getting stupid in south carolina
I agree with Kathleen. Southerners liken Yanks as annoying gnats that bother you incessantly until you pull out the repellant. While stereotypes sell and make people richer, they ultimately become poorer in spirit.
All a southern girl do is say, "Bless their hearts...maybe they'll catch on one day, but until they do we'll just keep on doing what we do best--tolerate the untolerable."
I love the south and all the crazy, colorful, disfunctional folks who make us who we are.
Thanks for getting out the repellant and raising some questions that need to be answered.

serge - the unbearable burden?

serge writes: "A day does not go by that I am not behind a pick-up or jeep that's proudly displaying the contentious flag. That's here in upscale, yuppieland SC. You get a whole different outlook when you head upstate. We might as well be on different planets."

Man, serge... that sounds absolutely awful... how do you deal with that kind of mental oppression, day in and day out?

Wouldn't you be a lot happier living in a tree outstide a Starbuck's coffee shop in Seattle?

Oh, please.....
I'll agree with SJ Doc...at one time, for all of its other faults, the colony of South Carolina fought better fights over more important issues. I live on a SC island that is essentially a charnel pit. All slaves passing into the southern colonies were quarantined on this island; huge numbers of them died from the long passage. They were buried here and I'm conscious of them every time I take a step.

When I come down from the Ravenel (an arch-racist if ever there was one) Bridge into Mt. Pleasant, one of the first things that greets me is a confederate flag sign promoting its group's virtues. It stands alongside the Kiwanis signs and those of other real service groups.

A day does not go by that I am not behind a pick-up or jeep that's proudly displaying the contentious flag. That's here in upscale, yuppieland SC. You get a whole different outlook when you head upstate. We might as well be on different planets.

I can only take from this experience at your site that Ms Parker is a complete nitwit.

Cheers...

If Ms. Parker's IQ plummeted 20 points
... she's be into negative numbers.

Memories of South Carolina
--
When I was a kid, my dad was considering taking a job that would've seen the family move south to Atlanta, and he decided that our summer vacation would consist of a family drive from South Jersey (which I consider a wholly separate state from those goddamned Yankees fans in Trenton and parts north) to Georgia.

On the way, we passed through South Carolina. Y'know what I remember of the Palmetto State?

Cowpens battlefield.

Where the southern states' militia - private citizens, bearing their personal arms, "well-regulated" under the command of Dan Morgan and with the aid of Continental regulars from Virginia, Maryland and Delaware - destroyed the cream of Cornwallis' army, forcing the later battle of Guilford Courthouse and the retreat to Yorktown.

The beginning of the end for the British Empire in the territories of these United States.

The people of South Carolina today should bear closer in mind the lessons of Cowpens, and concentrate less upon the miseries of the Reconstruction.

They were once the cradle of resistance against overweening central government, and not the puling victims of the blandishments and tyrannies used by present-day "big government" politicians to cozen the gullible.

we lived in charleston for 10 years but moved to phoenix last year for new jobs. Whenever I ever went north and persons learned I was from sc the old racists charges would come out. Everyone in sc was a closet racist and slept between sheets emblazened with the conf. flag. No matter how many times you would tell northerners the flag was rarely seen they accused you of being a liar. For those ignorants living elsewhere they probably will never learn of either the beauty of charleston or it's gracious charm or it's friendliness. We had planned on retiring there but unfortunately for us things didn;t work out. Our only real consolation is that phoenix is an exciting place to be and ariz a very interesting place to live, but still.....

um, jnik...
the point is that it's people from other parts of the country, especially media heads, that perpetuate this hackneyed stereotype of the South, not necessarily Dems or Republicans. I fail to see the point of your post, except to prove mine.

Loribme
LOL, Hi, I'm from SC also and I voted for Fred. Since here at TH nobody from SC admits voteing for McShame, I wonder who did vote for him.

Contined..
On voting for McCain: yeah, I was very disappointed, too, although not surprised. Years ago, in my district, we voted on a referendum for a one cent sales tax hike to pay for roads. This referendum occured directly after a horrendous fiasco involving road improvements not far from me. Long story short: the contractor the county council hired kept missing the deadlines, costing this county bucku bucks. Now, they were asking for more money even though they proved they could not manage money properly. I voted no, of course. Sad, the referendum passed. So, no, I'm not surprised McCain won SC. I, of course, voted for Fred Thompson.

But, don't give up on SC just yet! Maybe we will come to our senses and get rid of Lindsey Graham!

THANK YOU PACKRAT!
Packrat, you hit the nail on the head. The point of the article is stereotyping. I live in South Carolina. I am not a gun-toting, confederate flag waving, truck driving hick. I do NOT eat squirrels even though they scamper allllllll over my backyard (they ATE my lawn furniture! geeeez!). Seems like we SC'ers get a bad rap in the media and that is not right!

About the Confederate Flag: let me remind everyone that it was the NAACP that brought that issue to public attention. The grievance was that this flag was flying on the dome of the capital building. So, our legislatures, including sevral black ones, agreed on a compromise. Instead of flying the flag on the building itself, they would fly it on a pole on the grounds. Ok. Seems reasonable. The reason they wanted to continue flying the flag was because this particular version (there are a couple of versions of the Confederate flag, just fyi) did not symbolize slavery but the struggle the south went through for states' rights. I saw the flag in question. It is no bigger than a legal pad. The compromise was a good one. But the NAACP would not be reasonable. They called for a statewide boycott. They couldn't care less that they were hurting the people they claim to champion.

Howard Dean not Wrong?
"In 2003, when Howard Dean lamented that the South had to stop obsessing about on race, guns, God and gays, he wasn't necessarily wrong. But it is once again clear that the pols and pundits will have to go first." I got news for you lady every one of those issues need to be focused on more and more. As for politicians IQ dropping 20 points. Trying to read your article and finding the point of it, makes one think your IQ needs to be 20 points higher before you start writing opinions to be published. Plus while seeing politicians turn on and off southern accents is sickening to see, reading your attempt at is downright insulting not only to southerners, but to every person in the United States. While I think political correctness is a bunch of hogwash, you my dear lady need to learn a little of it.

Packrat
One of the greatest Journalist of the 20th century,Walter Lippman, taught us, that the press and it's stories come with a "SLANT".I am a very sarcastic person,I understood the article fully.THANKS...

Killer
You need to read more than headlines to learn.

The point was the stereotypes in the minds of the media. If they can not present a true picture of what is happening, those of us reading their articles will not get a true picture.

Mrs. Parker
I could only read the introductory part of your article. You are better than THAT.I HOPE!!!

The problem is that they
all get their education from TV and movies like "To Kill A Mockingbird". To them that is ALL they ever see, therefore that's the way it is.

Except up in the hills, then it's like Deliverence.

Me too, LeishaC
A few years ago on my son's swim team in Myrtle Beach, two of the kids were from a mixed-race (white and black) couple. It was never an issue, never mentioned by any other parents. In Myrtle Beach, mixed-race couples are a common sight. They scarcely elicit a second look--from blacks or whites.

The school systems are integrated, there are black state troopers, black politions and black teachers and coaches. There is a thriving black middle class.

Liberals, however, are deeply invested in a world view in which the South is virulently racist. There not going to give up that cherished model anytime soon.

sick of it
As a proud lifelong resident of the South who started school in 1971, I am utterly sick of hearing people from everywhere else in the country continue to berate us for our race relations. Trust me, race relations are better in the South than anywhere else in the country, simply because we've had to learn to get along. The black population in the South is higher than any other region, so we live in the same neighborhoods, work in the same offices, play on the same teams, and these days, even go to the same churches. I remember the days of racist jokes and integration, but I also have had a front row seat to see how far we've come. I teach English, and when my kids read "To Kill a Mockingbird," they are always appalled at how terrible race relations used to be. Sure, racism still exists, but no more so here than anywhere else. It's easy to be magnanimous about race when you live in an all-white town. We've all had to face our prejudices down here and learn to live with each other. The biggest race problems of the last 20 years have happened in LA, Detroit, Boston -- places far from the South. The South is the finest part of the greatest country in the world. Why else are so many people moving here?

Thank You Ms. Parker
As I said a few days ago the battle flag is an old issue dead and buried, Idiot Huckleberry drug it up hoping to get some of the non-religious vote but it didn’t work.

Even the NAACP has given up on the flag as a losing proposition (for now) and has taken up the statue of Ben “Pitchfork” Tillman which is on the Statehouse grounds.

You see, there is always some token monument or item that the modern day race baiters must be offended by. If there wasn’t they would have to do something legitimate, like develop and encourage programs that would actually benefit the people they purport to represent.

And to you people griping about SC voting for McShame. Fewer voted for him this time than in 2000. There were just too many running in the race.

Let history be history
Even Andrew Young, that purveyor of midnight demolition orders to demolish what he called *white folks history* was intelligent enough to realize that it is necessary to continue to have monuments and memorials from the past in order to remind us how far we have come. Yet this puerile whine about the Confederate Battle Flag, another way to pander to Blacks who have too much time on their hands between teevee programs, continues to arise.

Instead of trying to stamp out every indication that White people ever lived in the South much less that they have had any influence over it, why not try to figure out why every single newscast includes the words *The suspect was described as Black*?

I hope this gal isnt a real writer
maybe its just me or the hour but what exactly was this gals point ?

south carolina has allot of explaining of not a flag choice but what the heck they were doing giving votes to Mccain or Mcamnesty

shame on SC and shame on fred for selling his staying in the race to allow mccain a victory

Be careful what you wish for, Kathleen...

Friendship with the world comes with a price you do not want to pay...

Besides, if I was fortunate enough to live in the beautiful state of South Carolina, I think I might be content to let the glitterati think whatever they like, in hopes that when they visit, they never want to stay any longer than it takes to get a nice tan... ;-)

P.S.
Now that I’m thinking about it, here is Miss Alison Krauss performing a beautiful rendition of JT’s “Carolina in my Mind”…

No liberal
Gop pundit could have put it better. You are obviously much more moral than the racist folks in SC. That flag is picking pockets and breaking bones you see, so can you help those poor, backwards, toothless fools redeem themselves?
