Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The recent YouTube presidential debate -- the oxymoronic event of history's longest political season -- has been dubbed "groundbreaking" and "historic."

Let's also add "ridiculous."

Not that the concerns of snowmen aren't perfectly valid, of course. One of the questions posed during the CNN-sponsored "debate" came from a talking snowman who cited global warming as the most important issue for snowmen.

"What will you do to ensure that my son will live a full and happy life?" he asked the Democratic candidates.

And not that it isn't important to know what each candidate likes and dislikes about the other. In another taped question culled from about 3,000 submitted for consideration, each candidate was asked to turn to his or her left and say what he or she likes and doesn't like about that person.

Brilliant. If you're 5.

John Edwards turned to Hillary Clinton and said he wasn't sure about her coral-colored coat. Barack Obama said, "I actually like Hillary's jacket."

And everybody felt all better.

Some questions were serious, including one about health care for illegal immigrants and another about Iraq -- but too many of the 39 were beyond silly.

YouTube invites silliness, which is part of its appeal, but inviting so-called "ordinary Americans" to film themselves posing questions to presidential candidates does not advance democracy, no matter how much hoopla we manufacture.

What anybody can do, anybody can do. Anyone can make a goofy video and ask a goofy question, but the man or woman intending to lead the free world should resist dignifying the charade.

Joe Biden came close to showing his disdain for this insult to American intelligence, such as it is, when a Michigan fellow asked whether he and his Second Amendment buddies could be sure their "babies" would be safe. He then cradled his own baby, a military-grade automatic weapon.

Biden said he wasn't sure the fellow was "mentally qualified to own that gun."

Even if the candidates were irritated by this faux show of democratic connectivity, they had no choice but to participate. If you refuse to play with the YouTubies, you risk being viewed as elitist and out of touch with Tha Peepul.

Thus, they all seemed relieved when a question was so silly that they could break from pretending to take the evening seriously. The candidates smiled broadly as two Gomers at RedStateUpdate.com wondered if it "hurt y'all's feelin's" that everybody talks about Al Gore all the time.

Naw, heck, no.

Yes, well, the Republic is certainly stronger for that.

Arguments favoring the debate have circled around the notion that this techie-feely approach would attract The Young 'n' Restless -- that hallowed demographic of 18-to-34-year-olds so coveted by advertisers, newspaper publishers and politicians.

Turnout, alas, was less than spectacular. A total of 2.6 million watched the debates -- 6 percent fewer than watched a more traditional debate from New Hampshire in June. Of those, 407,000 were ages 18-34, only slightly more than the 368,000 among the June audience.

Some critics have noted that the debate wasn't sufficiently democratic because CNN editors selected the final questions. Given that the questions aired apparently were considered the best of the lot, insufficient democracy would seem to be one of the few achievements of the evening. What genius, one wonders, lies undiscovered on the cutting room floor?

Otherwise, the only conclusion to draw from this exercise is that Republicans, scheduled for a similar trivializing gantlet in September, should decline. Let's give the Democratic candidates applause for gamesmanship, but concede that playing buffoon to the masses is not a requirement for the presidency.

If it is necessary to submit to anything demanded by anyone, then no one worthy will run for public office. To wit: At a recent off-the-record dinner party, a congressman was asked who he thought would make a good president. His response was telling:

"Do you mean among those running or those qualified people who won't run because they're unwilling to submit to the humiliation of our political process?"

Commenting on that process recently, Newt Gingrich doubtless spoke for many when he called the debates "auditions" and ridiculed "the idea of 10 or 11 people standing passively at microphones." He said he refused to "shrink to the level of 40-second answers, standing like a trained seal, waiting for someone to throw me a fish."

If America deserves a better candidate, it would seem that candidates real and hoped-for also deserve a better America.

Laying the groundwork
It seems to me that the right wing pundits are laying the groundwork for the repubs to avoid a similar debate because it is beneath them, or simply silly.

Yea, I agree that some of it is silly, but I think a similar debate with the repubs would be vastly more entertaining.

I think is would be very interesting to see what the GOP base would come up with in terms of questions. My guess is that it would be difficult to get questions for these guys. They are not even remotely mainstream. Does the base know how to use Youtube?

Imagine a video a two lesbian woman asking that group of white middle aged conservative men whether they would support the right of the women to marry. That would be incredible entertainment.

I don't think these guys want to get anywhere a situation where they are required to take questions like that from mainstream Americans.

What do you think?

Political views are boooor-ing!
The UTube forum was perfect, for it modeled the "New" America. Leaders no longer need to be stuffy old men that only think of politics. We want cool people to run for office. It isn't important for our president to lead us. It is important that he (or she) be able to entertain us.

The only real critique of the event was that there was no talent competition. I think time should have been devoted to allowing the candidates to display their skills at singing, dancing, or maybe doing a little mime. The candidate that gets the most applause and highest ratings should be the next president.

You mean to tell me
People are still watching these slimey politicians?

does not advance democracy,
So what are the Republicans doing to advance Democracy?

Let's see, the MAJORITY will wants us out of Iraq. Majority will IS Democracy.

The majority in this country will NOT vote for a pro-Iraq war president. Period.

That means the Republicans are advancing democracy by rejecting majority will.

The Republicans have already conceded the presidential election. That's real Democratic.

You can p**s off some of the people all the time, p**s off all of the people some of the time, but you can't p**s off all of the people all of the time in a Democracy.

The Republicans are arrogant about Democracy. The Republicans believe they don't have to talk with the American people, only talk down to them. That's why the MSM is liberal. Until the Republicans come down off their public high horse they have no grounds for criticizing Democrats for not advancing Democracy.

The Youtube Debates were a classic example of how the Democrats will talk to the people at their level and Republicans only want to talk down.

American people are just plain STUPID
You are a perfect example of Republican arrogance.

Thanks for playing.

If you really believe the American people are just plain STUPID then you have to realize they will vote STUPID. Duh, kinda makes sense doesn't it? Further more, if you really believe that then in order to win an election with a stupid people majority, you need to TALK STUPID. Duh.

If STUPID people are the majority in a Democracy then that's the cards that's dealt. If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Mexico comes to mind. We could use some reverse immigration and I'm sure Mexico would benefit from your very high intelligence.

drivebyposting...
We're a representative democracy, known better as a Republic. We elect our leaders to manage government for us, not necessarily to cower to majority rule. True, we can make our voices heard, and in certain cases we have made considerable influence in the government. Our triumphs against the amnesty bill is an example. But leaders make decisions based on what they believe to be so, not what the majority thinks is so because the whims of a majority can change on a dime. It is so that the majority do not have access to the sort of information that the president or other government officials have.

Now, as for the rest....how do you know that the American people won't vote for a pro-war president? Do you think Americans want this nation to lose this war? Do you think Americans want to retreat in the face of the enemy only to perhaps have to pay for the same territory again with more blood and sweat? The onus of victory is entirely on America, not on the terrorists who have no means of securing territory, ensuring military supremacy in any form, and can only hit us and our allies, including the Iraqis, with very small scale guerilla attacks that target, not individual soldiers or innocent civilians, but people in America like you who are all too willing to quit when the going gets rough.

If anyone opposes democracy it's Democrats. Look how they want to pass legislation: in secret, through the courts if possible, in any way that denies voters a say in the matter. From gay marriage to abortion to the amnesty bill, to all their own pork barrel spending it just goes to show that Democrats are nothing of the sort. And when things don't go their way at the polls they cry voter fraud.

Democrats talk down to people when they expand welfare spending, claiming that people can't make it on their own without government aid. Democrats talk down to people when they say America can't win in Iraq. Democrats talk down to people when there are efforts to cut taxes, claiming that the government can't afford tax cuts, even though it's the citizen's money, not governments! Democrats talk down to people when they purport the hoax of global warming and insist that people diminish the quality of their lives and lifestyles on the basis of junk science. Democrats talk down to people when they restrict the right of businesses to allow smoking in their establishments. Democrats talk down to people when they deny children to pray or otherwise express their faith in public schools. Democrats talk down to people who want to hire who they want, pay them what they want, and conduct their businesses how they want. Democrats talk down to people in order to promote class warfare, which is childish in and of itself, claiming that others aren't paying their fair share and that the rich are the way they are through unfair practices. Democrats talk down to people when they accord more rights to wanton criminals than to the victims they hurt. Democrats talk down to people who want to keep more of what they earn rather than give more of it to the government.

Republicans have their problems, but talking down to people is hardly one of them. Staying true to conservatism, which embraces freedom in ways modern Democrats hardly understand, is something the GOP has to work on.

Driveby Posting is on the money!!
Since the United States is a democracy and not a constitutional republic, the majority should always get its way.

Driveby correctly points out what is evident to all of us on the left; people are stupid, and they need the superior insight of the Democratic candidates to direct them. The Democratic candidates are all mentally superior to common people, so they must talk like morons in order for the people to understand them.

Yet, even though they lower the level of intelligence in their speeches to near retard levels, it seems that only leftists are understanding their message. Conversely, those on the right still fail to see the wisdom in such words, so they are obviously stupider than those on the left.

To All UTube Afficianados
Why not just stick a sock puppet on Chris Matthews' fist and have the puppet ask questions of the candidates? That would be a VAST improvement over the truly MORONIC UTube spectacle to which we were treated.

If anyone really thinks having a jerk fitted out like a snowman asking questions on global warming is the way to select a President, then you would qualify to be the sock puppet.

Loyal Democrat Posting
The United States is NOT a democracy; it is representative democratic republic.

If the majority ALWAYS got its way: we would not have any type of affirmative action or racial quotas, the death penalty would be used almost everyday in multiple states, busing would NEVER have been used, a wall/fence would have been built years ago at the U.S./Mexico border; our troops would be shooting AND killing Mexican soldiers and drug smugglers (perhaps a redundancy) who have temerity to shoot at our border guards, we never would have given the Panama Canal away, “affordable housing” would not exist (and consequently our neighborhoods would not be being ruined by our “liberal” local governments), crime/gangs would not be tolerated or excused (“root causes”), absurd lawsuits would not be allowed, prayer in public schools would be permitted, Christmas displays on public property and government buildings would be permitted, abortion laws would be decided by each state—and many of then would outlaw the practice, people would have a right to do what they wanted to do with their property—even if it was a swamp (so-called wetlands), English would be the official language, and illegal immigration would NEVER have been tolerated.

There are plenty of other things that would change if the majority were to always get its way.

you people
should not talk to liberals the way you do.
You have to talk to them like you would a 5yr old.
And pray there is a sudden surge in their brain
growth.

my 2 cents
The title of Ms. Parker's commentary says it all.

I have a dream
That one of the Republican candidates on you-tube whenever jumps on the first REALLY stupid question (are there any other?) and asks the simple question - "Can we get serious here?"

But that's just a dream

it says here that this all started
15 years ago when someone asked candidate Bill Clinton what kind of underwear he was wearing.

Fools names and Fools Faces
are always seen in public places.

That is what my Sainted Southern Granny would say when we passed someone's scrawl or carving on walls or fences, or someone makeing a spectacle of himself on a street corner. YouTube is that saying writ large. YouTube tells everyone that It Is All About Me -- the mantra of Generation Whine and their Bratz.

YouTube by and large encourages people to believe that the louder, ruder, dumber and more licensious you are, the more people will love you. Encouraging Clarabelle the Clown to cross examine serious people about vitally serious subjects is Government by The Simpsons.

Someone recently commented that democracy is 11 wolves and a lamb discussing what is for lunch. I thought that was the best description of the YouTube Spectacle, too.

Sean, if you think for one second
that CNN is going to actually use questions from the Republican base, I have a nice bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. As much as the Democrap "debate" was a setup of soft questions, the Republican "Utube debate" will be another round of "gotcha" questions from more of the looney left, just like Mathews used on the first CNN Republican debate.

One thing should be obvious to thinking adults (that rules out most Democraps) is that the Republican are willing to knowingly face the rediculously biased CNN questions, but the Democraps are afraid to face Brit Hume. How can anyone afraid of Foxnews convince anyone that they can face the terrorist sponser state leaders with any respect from them at all. Demowimps all the way through. Not a spine in the bunch.

Democracy vs Republic
The best example of the danger of a democracy I can think of is the one that involves 2 lions and a lamb debating what to have for dinner...(answer for liberals) It ain't grass!
Aren't liberals in favor of minority rights? Guess not.

On another subject: Why is it that the libs want to lose the war? A President does not lose a war, a nation does! How would losing help anything except maybe their election prospects? And isn't that fact (taking advantage of a short sided popular trend that would weaken us as a nation- solely for political power) reason enough for people to reject them?
I just don't understand liberals.

signed,
exasperated and furious in Florida

Only one quibble ...
...Kathleen. That was a Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle the fellow was holding, not an "automatic weapon."

Boxers or Briefs
This debate is what you get when the President of the United States answers stupid questions about boxers or briefs from some airhead bimbo, anyone remember that? I didn't see the debate but from what I have read it was fit for a five year old. The Republicans need to resist the temptation to lower themselves to this sort of buffoonery. There is a time for serious debate and a time for SNL skits.
"The Youtube Debates were a classic example of how the Democrats will talk to the people at their level and Republicans only want to talk down." Talking to people in snowman suits is not talking to people at their level it is playing to the goofballs. This think was more like Monty Hall on the old Let's Make A Deal studio.

As of Sean's posting "Imagine a video a two lesbian woman asking that group of white middle aged conservative men whether they would support the right of the women to marry. That would be incredible entertainment." I would love to see that too. They would most likely say no next question and the vast majority of Americans would agree with them. This is a Democracy right? In reality watching the Dems twist themselves into pretzels trying to please the you tube crowd while not alienating mainstream Americans would be fodder for Jay Leno! Ok the inmates had their day running the asylum now turn it over to the staff.

Theatrics Vs Substance
The YouTubers' desire for their 15 minutes of TV fame and CNN's desire to be entertaining was reflected in the stupidity and theatrics of many of the questions. You can involve the public in the presidential debates, and get better questions, AND a larger, more diverse group of public participants, if you require the questions to come via e-mail.

Snowman vs. Chris Matthews
C'mon, now, Kathleen..What's really the difference between some of these moderators asking stupid questions and a talking snowman asking stupid questions? At least the snowman proffers a spark of creativity.

Why is it that on the Republican side, it is reported that only McCain and Ron Paul have accepted the upcoming Republican youtube debate invitation? I suppose it's too far below the knighted chosen three to accept such piddly drivel from their lowly constituents.

I'd like to hear them collectively say, "Let them eat cake..."

Ron Paul 2008, the PEOPLE's candidate

Republican Youtubies
I just cannot contain myself until the Republican debate in You Tube format. The traditionalists on the Republican side have just as many children with gadgets you tubing it, and facebooking it, as the Democrats who is kidding who here. Surely, Mr. McCain is hoping that one of his fellow candidates comes up looking dumb and dumber. What would have been interesting is if the Republicans did the format first and really made it groundbreaking. We are still waiting for some new ideas from the Republican side on any issue, and about anything for that matter.

not ron paul
ron paul wants to lose in iraq as well and will not fight the islamofacist. if a pesidential candidate is unwilling to see the dangers threating the country that person has no right to be a leader.

lefties will never stop...
...in their quest to make the candidates jump through the most demeaning and ridiculous hoops imaginable.

Let the Dems play this game. It just gives more ammunition for their 'Dukakis tank moment'. It makes them all look small and silly.

There are many more dignified arenas in which to take questions from You-tubies. Just because the Dems are willing to look stupid on CNN in order to satisfy the moonbats- doesn't mean the GOP should.

Remember what your mamma always said about jumpin off that bridge!

I wonder if the 2.6 million
who watched the debate includes people like me who gagged after 45-50 minutes and had to depart for nearly half an hour to recover.

As silly, stupid and definitely NOT entertaining as the debate was, it's not all that surprising. YouTube is not an appropriate vehicle to be used with the debate. It is a great vehicle for young people to do whatever it is they do on YouTube and a good vehicle for older people like me to see video clips of musicians I liked from 30 and 40 years ago. But it is definitely not an appropriate tool for prefacing a debate.

My hope is that the Republicans set some ground rules for CNN. No snowmen, no lesbians, no questions about reparation for slavery. How about terrorism, protecting Americans and America's borders, adequate oversight for foreign goods (like food and toothpaste) coming into this country, illegal "immigration," the 2nd amendment, taxes, the AMT, capital gains, the housing market, the economy. Oh -- and maybe someone could address when we are going to get the fence built, to say nothing of enforcing federal laws on the books so that cities like Hazleton, PA don't get creamed. How about some real stuff?

On second thought, nah. CNN couldn't handle it.

Dittos Kathleen.
Excellent article.

Also, An Army Vet you're so right too. Libs are just moronic.

Loyal Democrat, I get a tremendous laugh every day when I read your posts, particularly your post at 2:44am. I just can't stop laughing.

But down to the subject at hand. I would not watch anything on CNN (Communist Nonsense Network) or any network "news" that is a propangda machine of thse Marxists. These Marxists have nothing to say to me that is worth wasting my time and energy. They are so predictable. You know what they are going to say....the same old Marxist BS. "We are the elitists intellectuals and we'll tell you what to do, what to think, and what to believe." I would rather watch paint dry then waste my time with these elitists and Marxists talking down to me, because in reality, they are the real moron's moron.

This stupidity
has got to stop.

You cannot select the leader of our country, because he/she is sexy or is funny on youtube.com.

Morals, intelligence, experience, and integrity have got to matter or we are doomed.

ANYWAY,
Is there anything more important than closing our borders, to prevent criminals, terrorists, nuclear bombs getting through?

IF SO, WHY DON'T THE MEDIA SHOUT ABOUT THAT EVERY DAY, 24/7....?????

Great Column!
I can't for the life of me why everyone thinks this is such a good thing. America's youth? Your kidding right? since the minute something shiny is presented they will lose their attention span and not vote. Get real. Unless you understand how the real world works and how it fully effects you there is no incentive to vote. That applies to America's youth.

Wayfinder
Regarding your post earlier
Truer words were never spoken.
Man I wish I could have thought of something like that. Did you write that all down becuase I would have had a hard time trying to think of something like that and type it in at the same time. LOL

pianogirlee/katee
The questions will be asked by Anti American Rebels-picked by cnn & the liberal mob bosses in
congress.
American patriots will be disallowed.

The questions will come from your TYPE: certified idiots!

"Why not just stick a sock puppet on Chris Matthews' fist and have the puppet ask questions of the candidates? That would be a VAST improvement over the truly MORONIC UTube spectacle to which we were treated."

I heard today that only 2 Republican candidates have agreed to appear on the next YouTube fiasco.

The debates so far have been less than high school level and have done NOTHING to enhance anyone's position.

I stand firmly with the remaining candidates for avoiding such a degrading environment. This is why I'm so glad that Fred T has held out as long as he has. RUN FRED RUN

roadkill58
I agree with your post - my "high school level" comment didn't go low enough! Age 5 (especially with regard to BHO's sex education is good for kindegarteners)is a bit more like it.

I truly hope the Republicans will join together on this important issue and ABSTAIN 100%. This is NO format for a legitimate debate...of course, none of the preceding have been either!

Rich L.
Are you equating Fox News with state sponsors of terror - check your logic.

bman - "two lesbian woman" is typo

utube debates
tech savy people and political numbskulls found in the same body. What a surprise. But what is truly discusting is CNN editing of the questions. Showing "cute" questions insults everyones intelligence and answers no questions about the candidates view. So edweirds doesn't like clintons jacket. How revealing

Sean
you wrote: "I think is would be very interesting to see what the GOP base would come up with in terms of questions. My guess is that it would be difficult to get questions for these guys. They are not even remotely mainstream. Does the base know how to use Youtube?"

Typical liberal bullsh**t meat. Like gays, lesbians, drug addicts etc, you know the Dims favorite causes, are mainstream. And of course we don't know how to use YouTube because we're too busy havin' sex wit our sistahs and burnin' crosses of the lawns of them thar colored people like Rush and the Pope tell us to do. We might have some people who don;t know how to use it but those people are out working while you sit in Mommy's basement surfin' the 'net.

"Imagine a video a two lesbian woman asking that group of white middle aged conservative men whether they would support the right of the women to marry. That would be incredible entertainment."

Yeah cuz conservatives don't know nutin' about dem lezbeans. Read about 'em once. If ah eva saw one I don't think I could even speak.

"I don't think these guys want to get anywhere a situation where they are required to take questions like that from mainstream Americans."

Dude: unemployed people, gays lesbians, drug addicts, and criminals - you know the Dim base - are not mainstream. The people who make America work while you jack-off to YouTube are mainstream. YouTube debates are stupid and undugnified. The future POTUS does not need to speak to those people. Get a life meat.

YouTube selections
I'd REQUIRE the individuals who selected the YouTube choices be seated in the front row of the audience and when a particularly stupid one appeared, REQUIRE the camera to focus on the chooser. I would also REQUIRE that the choosers define themselves politically to the audience, so that information can be posted under their picture each time a question was presented.

Might make the choosers a bit more cautious in their selections, especially in a Republican candidate debate.

Format
Traditional format vs. You Tube format. So far, the Rep debates have not been significant enough to narrow the field. If done right the You Tube format would be a good thing for republican candidates. Republicans have to operate in the media that is out there, regardless of how liberal those outlets are. Rep's should not fear undignified or silly questions. I believe they would handle a You Tube debate much better then the dems. It certainly would help widen the appeal of Republicans.

What are Republicans scared of?

YouTube reply to the chicken-hearted Republican candidates who are too scared, or think they are above, answering questions from the general public in the YouTube debate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIoQ6MhhhDQ

Liberity. Why are your Libs afraid...
FOX NEWS? Hmmmmm. Afraid of having tough and precise questions of your candidates stances on the war on terror; Dims always raising taxes; wanting socialized medicine; always supporting the enemies of the United States while not supporting the country that you live in and take for granted; never supporting the military in any way, particular during a time of war; trying to destroy the Constitution; trying to destroy the American family that you so despise; always attacking Christians and God; fabricating nonexistant scandals while actually ignoring, applauding, and rewarding felons in your own Marxist-Lib Party; wanting to eliminate free speech, unless of course it complys with your own (McCain-Feingold and the Unfairness Doctrine) and don't give me that McCain is a Republican because he is a Lib first (RINO); etc. I could go on and on.

But I and all true conservatives know what you and your ilk are really afraid of.....THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT YOU PEOPLE REALLY ARE....COMMUNISTS and SOCIALISTS!

Correction.
I mistyped your TownHall name, "Liberty". Sorry.

But I'm not sorry what I
posted at 2:06pm because it is the truth about your Marxist-Libs.

Crawfish
Nice try, bud. But, I've been a conservative all my life. From passing out Goldwater literature when I was a kid to Reagan being my first Presidential vote.

What you seem to be confused about is the fact that the Republican Party has been hijacked by a pack of BIG government socialists. Myself, I would like to kick them the hell out, reinstate the Constitution and the rule of law. Which is why I am voting for Dr. Ron Paul. The only real conservative in the race.

-------

If Republicans want to win in November of 2008, they must nominate Ron Paul.

If they nominate anyone else, they will assuredly lose.

The Reagan coalition has turned into the Ron Paul Revolution.
