Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

What a relief to read in a new Pew Research Center study that Muslims in America are ``largely assimilated, happy with their lives, and moderate with respect to many of the issues that have divided Muslims and Westerners around the world.''

Phew. Praise Allah. No more worries.

On the other hand, the study's findings may depend on how you define ``largely.''

Here's another way of putting the Pew results: While a majority of older U.S. Muslims have largely assimilated, more than a few younger Muslims think suicide bombings are justified.

Having trouble remembering where you put those pompoms? Stick around. Despite the upbeat treatment of the Pew study -- and headlines that conveyed a positive message -- the devil in the details is less reassuring.

In fact, the survey found that though a majority of the 1,050 surveyed (a fraction of the Pew's estimated 2.35 million Muslims in this country) are prospering, a significant minority are not assimilating and sympathize with radical Islam.

There is good news among the survey results, to be sure, especially if you're Muslim. In classically American fashion, 71 percent think that one can get ahead by working hard and 78 percent report being happy. In delightful news, those who report being happiest are young Muslims ages 18-29, who also comprise 30 percent of the total U.S. Muslim population.

In less happy news, these young Muslims are also more accepting of Islamist extremism. Add to that disconcerting note the following:

Sixty percent of the young group consider themselves Muslim first, American second. Among all young Muslims, 26 percent think that suicide bombings are justified often, sometimes or rarely. Another 5 percent said they ``don't know'' or refused to answer.

Don't know? To kill civilians or not to kill civilians is not a tricky question.

If 26 percent are fine with suicide bombing and another 5 percent probably are, then we may reasonably conclude that 31 percent of young American Muslims -- or roughly 219,000 -- support murdering innocents in the name of Islam. Peachy. Given that 9/11 was a supersized suicide bombing, it would seem we have a problem.

In another finding of Muslim American disconnect, fewer than half of all American Muslims believe that Arabs engineered the 9/11 attacks. Another third expressed no opinion or refused to answer.

That means that the vast majority of Muslims in America think ... what? That the U.S. attacked itself? That Israel did it?

While a majority of Muslims of all ages view al-Qaeda ``very unfavorably" (58 percent), an alarming number seem to be ambivalent. A whopping 27 percent said they didn't know how they felt toward the terrorist organization or refused to answer the question. An immigrant population that does not recognize the enemy of its adopted country cannot be said to have assimilated.

Nevertheless, the Pew study authors tell us that compared to Europe, we're in good shape. Yes, sure, ``there is somewhat more acceptance of Islamic extremism in some segments of the U.S. Muslim public than others,'' concede the authors. `` ... Nonetheless, absolute levels of support for Islamic extremism among Muslim Americans are quite low, especially when compared with Muslims around the world.''

In other words, presumably, we should be grateful that only 200,000 or so local Muslims support terrorism. In Europe, where many young Muslims are unemployed and alienated, things are much worse. True, but seldom does America measure success according to a things-could-be-worse standard.

Not so great is bad enough for reasoned alarm.

All of the study's conclusions depend, meanwhile, on whether one trusts its population figures, which Pew warns should be interpreted with caution. Since this was a telephone survey using only landlines -- and given that 48 percent of Americans age 18-29 use cells phones exclusively -- the number of young Muslims could be much higher than estimated. The truth is, no one knows how many Muslims live in the U.S. because the Census Bureau doesn't ask about religious identity. Muslim organizations put the figure at closer to 7 million based on mosque attendance.

If there are 7 million Muslims in the U.S., 30 percent of whom are young, 31 percent of whom do not forswear suicide bombings, then that could mean that as many as 651,000 young Muslim Americans sympathize with radical Islam and terrorism.

All things considered, it may be too soon to celebrate Muslim assimilation. Let's do hold the fireworks.

As I've written before
until the Muslim community comes out strongly disavowing the actions of these terrorists, and does something to curtail the clerics and others in their community who espouse this type of thing, and basically GET WITH THE PROGRAM as Americans, I am going to consider them all one big monolithic problem.

The ones who keep silent, or worse spend their time running around squawking about being picked on in one way or another, are just as bad as the guys who actually do the deed because they aid and abet by their silence. Plain and simple.

You know, in the Old South, the KKK was quite a faction, as small in numbers as they were, because other Southerners wouldn't speak out against them.

The KKK lost its potency when the rest of the Southerners said "Enough!".

That's what needs to happen now, with the Muslims. Time to loudly say "Enough!" and do something about curtailing the problem in their own midst before someone else does it for them.

True and it only took 100+ years.

Just Wait
Until these young Muslims start acting the way they do in France and other European countries, setting cars on fire, routinely rioting when they disagree with some political decision and assaulting non-Muslims. There are places in France where the police dare not go. Maybe when enough libs have their BMWs torched they'll see the light.

my 2 cents
I watched on and off a show on PBS last night about Islam and during the part that focused on Indonesia there were some scary people an that show, including more than one imam or whatever they call them, who said more than once that Islam and democracy cannot coexist. We all know that already and it is in a weird way a relief to hear one of them them say it, but what it means is that: America - we have a problem. (And so does the rest of the world) and the only people who can really solve it are the moderate Muslims who can rein in their murderous brothers and sisters. The trouble is that the phrase 'moderate muslim' seems to me and I would venture to many of you to be a contradiction in terms.

And I for one would be quite interested to know what some of the people who have come on TH and proclaimed their jubilation over the passing of Rev. Falwell have to say about this.

Valin
And how long has islam been violent?

BrianR
The problem is, is that the "moderate" Muslims see the radicals as getting gains for THEM through violence. So why speak out and risk death when they can shut up and profit?

Muslim criminals/terrorists should be executed forthwith and buried in a pig skin, in a pig sty. THEN watch how fast the BS stops.

BTW, if you have NOT swung by the #1 blog in America, click on my handle.

MORE!! MORE OF THEM
And WHAT does US do?
Let more of the real killers in!!!
more! next second - more!!! Next second -- more of them, and more, and more!
Who swears to protect us?
Oh, they do swear - "those f*^&$%# Americans who do not want criminals in!" Close that border!!

Islamic peace
Islam has been violent since its very beginning. It overwhelmed the whole north of Africa and the whole Middle East; it invaded Europe (only being stopped by Charles Martel, in France) and continued as far as "the gates of Vienna". All of these conquests were by no means peaceful. We are told by the very Islamists today that they still hope to restore the Caliphate and their old conquests, including the Iberian Penninsula (Spain and Portugal beware). Islam was not spread by kindly missionaries. It was imposed on all by the force of arms. How can Islam change now, if the Koran is supposed to be Allah's own words, as told to the prophet? It would be a denial of the very word of Allah as revealed to Muhammad. Let us stop being naïve, for goodness sake.

WHO IS CRAZZZY?
qUOTE: "young American Muslims -- or roughly 219,000 -- support murdering innocents in the name of Islam."

And only a handful of them may kill thousands of innocent Americans.
And what do we do???
wE keep the borders open asking for more!!!!

Muslim first?
The number of Muslims in our country who support suicide bombing and who sympathize with Al Qaeda is alarming.

But I thought that the question about whether the poll's respondents regarded themselves as a Muslim first or an American first was misleading. If I were asked whether I regarded myself as a Christian first or an American first, I would affirm that I am a Christian first. But I am very patriotic, I put this country ahead of my ethnic identity, and I do not wish to see a theocracy established in America.

It would be more helpful to inquire whether Muslims would like to see a Caliphate and sharia law established in the USA. This would tell us more about their view of the "mosque/state" relationship, their attitude toward American citizenship, and the freedoms that we have fought long and hard to maintain.

If you were paid $50 would you?

Pew paid each person interviewed $50 per the Washington Post.

If you were paid $50 would you tell the person how you really felt?

The results are watered down so things are far worse than the answers.

Islam must be outlawed in our country as it is a TERRORIST ORGANIZATION MASQUERADING AS A RELIGION.

All religions are not the same and not all religions are religions. So much for the multicultural agenda of equality if you do not look beneath the surface.

SALTLICK
I take the survey with a chunk of the Subject Line. WE ALREADY KNOW they are here! Stay sharp and keep your powder dry!

Ill repeat it again
1.There is no such thing as a moderate muslim. 2. Islam is a crime syndicate not a religion.

Shift the focus
No one has commented on the one of the facts about Islam that makes it extremely unpredictable and difficult to handle.

There is no structure to the religion. No one elects an iman. They more or less become one by intense study, demonstrated piety and their own strength of belief in their correct, personal interpretations of sacred text. No one iman or ayatollah has authority over more than a tiny percentage of the faithful.

Okay, in some ways resembles the much looser associations of Christian evangelicals.

But consider: The New Testament is pretty firm about how it views violence. We still can trace a lot of violence to Christian zealots but by in large, the vast majority of Christians can plainly see the disconnect between professed belief and such reality.

No so with Muslims. Quite a lot of the sacred literature of Islam preaches violence. Jihad. Conquest. Out and out murder. Sacred suicide. The list can be expanded of course, so fill in your own blanks.

I think that makes Islam a hell of a lot more dangerous that Christianity.

Before anybody asks, no, I'm not a Christian. My own views are private and I prefer to keep things that way. But I will say I'm extremely worried about any faith that doesn't encourage -- demand actually -- those who practice it to take moral stands on such matters.

The KKK and the South Today
Brian R wrote, "The KKK lost its potency when the rest of the Southerners said "Enough!"."

Valim retorted, "True and it only took 100+ years."

The first incarnation of the KKK was formed in 1866 and was destroyed by 1871, a destruction made possible when the majority of the South rejected it. (Would it be uncouth to mention that the original KKK was a DEMOCRAT group that terrorized Republicans?)

The second incarnation arose in 1915 and was defunct by the end of WW II. (Would it also be uncouth to mention that this KKK existed just long enough to have the services of Robert C. Byrd as officer and recruiter, and that Mr. Byrd stills erves as a US Senator, DEMOCRAT?)

Today there is no national Klan organization.
There are about 3000 losers, NATIONWIDE (i.e. all 50 states), who call themselves Klansmen. There are more people than that who call themselves Starfleet officers, and with as much justification.

However, this does raise two interesting points. If the people killing US soldiers in Iraq are "resisting" an "occupation" as "insurgents," how does that differ from the original KKK?

And, since the Iraqi "insurgency" is OK with the Left, then why does the Left hate the Klan so?

All Religions have a Defense Mechanism
It's built into every major religion. Someone here mentioned the word Zealot.
The original "Zealots" were Jewish resistance fighters defending their very existance(once again) from total destruction by the Roman Empire.
The more any people of faith feel that their existance is threatened the more zealous they become. One ancient trick the Romans used to draw the zealous out of hiding was to threaten their fair, burn the temples, shrines, monuments, etc... This would fire up any people of faith and they'd usually come out of hiding and rise up with a massive army only to be hacked to pieces by the well trained armies of Rome. It didn't matter what faith, the same strategy worked time and time again. It was better than hunting them down one by one, back in that day it was a logistical impossibility. The losses incured by the zealots discouraged any future resistance.
Now we come to the present and our empire is beholdent of the dangers presented by of a people with a certain faith. So we threaten their faith, tell them where we are and hack them to pieces. Provoking a religions defense mechanism is a proven tactic, but it is not infallible.

One small problem. Our leader is acting like Augustus. Our general is acting like Varus.

Tom Sawer
As far as I know, no one is threatening the existance of islam. They are threatening the existance of every other faith.

I know
It's sad that they can't take a joke.

They proudly deceive and don't care
No one has mentioned that Islamic teaching says it is wrong to tell a lie except to infidels. Trying to have a dialogue with Islamofacists would be the most naive excerise imaginable
