Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- If the truth sets you free, we're not quite born again yet.

After more than a week of pandering, pontificating and supplicating in the wake of Don Imus' firing by CBS and MSNBC, we've shed little light on the gleaming nugget buried deep within the rubble of rhetoric.

As is often the case, the truth was in front of our noses, captured in a single image: Imus and Al Sharpton facing off in Sharpton's radio studio the day the civil rights wrangler gelded the cowboy.

Both perched before mics and wearing headphones, they were twins of a different color, mirror images reflecting a co-dependency of provocation and outrage.

Both are products of American emotions that are real and often legitimate. The same culture that created Sharpton also created Imus.

Which is to say, for every lash, there is a backlash.

Racism isn't a myth, after all. Sharpton -- or someone like him -- was inevitable. If not he, then someone was bound to grab the spotlight and cast a high beam on the horrors that have been and are committed out of racial animus.

That Sharpton is appropriately called out for applying a double standard in his policing of justice doesn't change the fact of what brought him forth. Born of a rage that can't be denied, he is a reaction -- if overlong sustained -- to a central flaw in our humanity.

While some of Sharpton's advocacy has been reprehensible and has backfired, he nevertheless has been a voice for people who didn't have one -- a vent for long-simmering frustration among a portion of blacks who feel marginalized and disenfranchised.

Imus, too, was a reaction. Shock jocks come equipped with a range of dubious talents, but they have a market for a reason. Imus was a draw primarily for white males who feel marginalized by a culture that finds entertainment in male bashing, especially those of the pale complexion.

White males, in fact, are the only group left on the planet that can be ridiculed and demonized with impunity. Imus vented their frustrations for them, saying what they couldn't. In our PC culture, he was a tiny island where bad boys could assemble and make the sort of remarks that men have made among themselves for centuries.

The I-Man and his scatological sidekicks were liberated ids vicariously employed. In particular, Imus was a boy's boy. Saying he was a man's man seems a stretch given that his sense of humor often came straight from the backseat of mama's station wagon.

Or from the locker room.

The Imus show was pure guy play in the tradition of humor as channeled aggression. Poking fun -- laughing at each other and oneself -- is one of man's more charming instruments of survival. When guys spout off hostilities in an environment of mutual trust -- the sort that evolves from team play and common showers -- nobody gets hurt.

Humor can also be a form of peaceful rebellion, in this case against a sometimes too-precious culture. When you can't say anything, you want to say everything. "Just say no"? Just say bring it on in copious quantities of obscene excess. Yesssssss!

The reflex to do precisely what one is not supposed to is as American as the Boston Tea Party. They say we can't or must, and we say, "Yah, right."

Imus has been saying "Yah, right" for a long time. But this time, he said it to the wrong people, picking on individuals who weren't in on the game. Who didn't consent to the rules. Who were not one of the guys, but young women who don't belong to the culture of boydom.

Towel snapping is only fun and fair, after all, if everybody has a towel.

The success of both Sharpton and Imus, despite sometimes contemptible behavior from both, was owing precisely to their having served a constituency that feels beleaguered.

But when one's audience is a marketplace of misery -- when one's success depends on the perpetuation of victimhood -- the groove eventually becomes a rut. Sharpton's search for justice got bogged down in reverse racism; Imus' humor got mired in gratuitous insult.

Captured together in the same frame last week, Sharpton and Imus -- media stars fashioned by anger and sustained by self-absorption -- were cultural doppelgangers come face to face.

They not only mirrored each other, but also, like opposites, they canceled each other out.

Ms. Parker
What an interesting article and a different take on the situation that hasn't been voiced so far.

http://peppermintsplace.townhall.com
Chapter 14 is on my blog for those reading the diary series.

My 2 cents
What are al sharpton's qualifications besides the color of his skin?

What does it say about a group of people that they have someone like al sharpton as their defender? Surely they can do better.

Don Imus as a spokesman for someone? Please. I am a white male and I know a lot of other white males (a lot of times we run in packs) and NOT ONE OF THEM considers Don Imus a spokesman for him.

Usually I am an admirer or Ms.Parker's pieces, but methinks that this time she went too far - this whole silly story has been overanalyzed to the nth degree and beyond and let's just let it die.

1) Imus is now always has been and probably always will be an idiot and there is big money in being an idiot these days. But like most idiots he pushed it too far and ZAP!!! he's toast.

2) sharpton is now always has been and always will be an idiot and sooner or later he will go too far and methinks that he and jj both overplayed their hands on this one in laying claim to a moral authority that NEITHER ONE OF THEM HAS and a lot of people realized that on this one.

3) It is my firm hope that one of the results of this (finally) dying farce will be the realization that us white folks no longer have the monopoly on racism - in fact we lost it long ago.

Ms. Parker, you are a babe of the first order and I love most of your stuff but this one was a kabibble - you blew it.

If there are any white males out there in cyberland who feel that Don Imus speaks for them now (or ever did) and who feel that their civil rights were trampled on because their spokesman was fired (at the age of 70) for being an idiot, please step forward.

one more thing
when rosie comes out defending imus - isn't that a hint that somewhere a screw has come loose and this whole thing has GONE TOO FAR?

What's left out
The only thing I've not seen in the discussion of Imus is this:

Weren't many of the Rutgers athletes making an effort to look like members of the Hip-Hop subculture? And as such, isn't a description of women from the Hip-Hop subculture appropriate?

Someone noted that in the press conference, the Rutgers athletes wore long sleeves, hiding the tats to which Imus referred.

Don and Al - morallly equivolent...
"The success of both Sharpton and Imus, despite sometimes contemptible behavior from both, was owing precisely to their having served a constituency that feels beleaguered."

I think not. Imus is not a racist. Imus might be an aging juvenile, but he hasn't hurt anyone (except maybe some feelings, oh my) and he puts his much of his considerable fortune into very worthy causes. Imus apologized for stupid remarks. Sharpton's rhetoric and actions actually hurt people and in some cases ruined lives. Any apologies from Al? Any consequences for Al?

Dittos Uncle Max!... And Another Thing..
Would that the illustrative "gelding" proceedure Ms. Parker so aptly directs to Imus, would, in the name of DIVERSITY be extended equally, and inclusively to the Reverands(?) Sharpton, and Jackson.

These "book ends" of career muck rakers are pathetic jokes that are't funny anymore. I cannot believe Black's in America haven't told them to, "Put a sock in it!" long before now. I'd call them both horses a---s, but I love horses too much.

The Black Race is Better off?
Wow! Now that Imus has been sent packing, blacks can now have more jobs, better housing, a crime-free world where there are no drugs, murder, etc.! Isn't that the point? To improve the lot of the black race: that whites must be sacrificial lambs to the cause?
Pul-lease! If the "Rev" Al Sharpton was truly a man of God, he would have invited Imus to get down on their respective knees and pray together for forgiveness ("he who is without sin, cast the first stone"). Truthfully, I am sick to death of ALL the poseurs! Give us average Americans a break...let them all just GO AWAY!

I'm waiting..................
if some folks are so "sensitive" and/or "outraged" or "emotionally damaged for life" by remarks of Imus (the idiot) -- when will Rosie, Bill Mahr, Al Fradken, etc., etc. (the obnoxious) be canned as well.

As a middle aged, white woman not on welfare, I'm now a minority and I've become "emotionally damaged" by the likes of Rosie and crowd. Off with their heads --- or better yet, pay me $$ for my damaged condition.

Negroes
If Negroes can't "make it" in this country, who can? Immigrants, including illegals, who can't even speak the language come to this country to find work, make money, move up, buy a home or a business and enjoy the freedom they cannot in their homelands. But Negroes in every city in the USA live in squallor. Does anyone disagree? In a beautiful city in New York on the magnificent Hudson River, surrounded by mountains, the Negroes live in dirty, decrepit slums. The property with this view is gold, and they dissrepect it and abuse it.

Katy, Katy
Katy's analysis, while unique, does not hold up. Imus and Sharpton are not morally equivalent. Imus does not speak for the oppressed majority of white males. But then who does? I repeat, who does? . . . . . Still waiting for that answer. I would like to cite Tewana Brawley and its aftermath in reference to the Most Unreverend Mr. Sharpton, but like OJ's state sanctioned murder no one really cares, do they?

Wrong, Wrong
First, Sharpton is no champion of racial injustice. He is a self-promoting race hoe. Where there actually is racism, he exploits it. Where there is no racism, he creates it. There will never be complete racial harmony as long as guys like Sharpton and Jackson are around, and I'll bet that suits them just fine.

Second, as a white male I can say that Imus was absolutely not speaking for me when he made his idiotic remarks about the Rutger's women's basketball team. I can't say that I ever listened to him that much, but what I have heard didn't resonate or impress me. It's a shame it was left to the likes of Sharpton and Jackson to be his judge and jury, but, no great loss that he's now off the air.

Ms. Parker
Ms. Parker, Kindly let the Imus issue go. It appears the firing of Imus has had a deleterious impact on your week day mornings? Me, I found Imus a bore.

Poor White Men, the man keeps them down
Gee that is mighty white of Kathleen Parker
to stand up for white men.

"Imus was a draw primarily for white males who feel marginalized by a culture that finds entertainment in male bashing, especially those of the pale complexion. White males, in fact, are the only group left on the planet that can be ridiculed and demonized with impunity."

WHAT? WHAT THE FREAK? Poor white men.

I am a white men. Have a masters degree and fly big jets. I feel pretty good. I think men than are angry or feel inferior have some issues that are with in, not societal.

I don't feel abused or used. OK Oprah says there is always a white men on the dance floor that can't dance. Funny? Not really. True? Well I know some black men and woman that dance terrible. Oprah is not a good dancer.

Look why add racial divide and to say POOR WHITE GUYS. Sure there has always been the CLOWN, the fool. Sure men are displayed as the inept bumbler. They are also James Bond and Super Doctors, Lawyers and Hero's. One of the funnest movies, Dumb and Dumber, low brow, yes, funny, absolutely. No one thinks these are real white men. ITS FREAKING ENTERTAINMENT!

This argument is ridiculous and I am surprised a woman wrote it, except that she has no soul or is pandering to a white male audience that she thinks she is writing for, on a conservative web site.

PS Sharpton is not King of Black People. My Black friends don't like him.

For "Uncle Max"
"sharpton is now always has been and always will be an idiot and sooner or later he will go too far".

Your tense is wrong here; Sharpton went too far BEFORE the "Tawana Brawley" case he botched at engineering!

Negroes!??????
I haven't heard that used in 35 years.
Better watch for the "hate police"!!
Or worse still, you could find yourself apologizing on the Al Sharpton Show!!

Al's tp
It was awful nice of you to kiss Brother Sharptons backside Ms parker. At the same time you shoved a knife in the back of Imus and every other white male in the country. Imus and Sharpton are two sides of the same coin as you infer. Sharpton is out to destroy every white male and female in this country. You sadly are too naive apparently to see this.

What a moronic statement.
Nancibelle, are you so far out of it that you can't see the white trailer park trash all over this country? "Negroes" do not all live in squallor and dirty and decrepit slums.

Of course some do, just like whites who live generation after generation in poverty and ignorance. I do not consider myself particullarly sensitive about being an American of African descent, but your comments really frosted me.

I repeat my question. Can you not see the poor, ignorant white trash that are so numerous in America? Can you only see the black trash?

Understand that the trash of both races have the opportunity in this country to rise above their circumstances. Many do, in spite of the obstacles they face. That is what is great about America. I suggest that you open your eyes and see a more complete picture.

Nancibelle
I think you missed your turn back a couple of streets, this isn't the Huff-N-Puff Post. You make a hard turn to the left and follow your nose.

bigmick
I have to agree with you, I don't see any relationship with Imaidiot and Red State males. She seemed to imply there was some kind of White Guy bond there and to me I never saw it. This guy has Big City Democrat written all over him. Yeah I know, he's got a ranch and wears a hat, money can buy a lot of things but it don't give you brains.

Hey Mick!
I hear you, although you lost me with the skypilot reference. There are a couple of things I want to point out. The first is the MAJORITY you mention.

I submit to you that the majority may not be as large as you may think. There is a huge, successful black community in this country that is second or third generation middle class. Do you have any idea how many black millionairs there are in this country?

Now of course there are a multitude of poor, under educated to the point of illiteracy, criminal black people, who may in fact view Sharpton and Jackson as leaders. My children are grown and successful. I mention that because you reminded me of a conversation I had with my daughter a while back.

I had mentioned Jessie and Al, and my comments about them were as usual, very derogatory. She told me that it was only people of my generation who thought enough about these guys to take them seriously. She said that all of her friends and aquaintances recognized that Jessie and Al are nothing more than hustlers, and are viewed with contempt for what they do.

Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton have been designated as black leaders by the media and by Democrat Party leaders. The media shows you these clowns all the time. They also show you the underclass, black and white. Did you ever watch Cops on TV?

What they don't show you is successful blacks. They do show you all of the race baiters. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus, and the NAACP. All of these people make their living keeping the poor, ignorant, angry blacks in the ghettos of America feeling like victims.

These are the people who have been raised in the welfare tradition. They are the ones who buy into the garbage about reparations for slavery, and how they can't get ahead because the white man won't let them.

I wonder if the majority of whites are successful. Or are they like the ignorant, depraved white trash we see on Cops being wrestled into squad cars. What do you think Mike?

Oh! I want to try to make it clear. I don't intend to be attacking you.I really don't think that you said anything to be attacked for. You are probably expressing the thoughts of lots of people. I just want you to consider that you may not have the whole picture about what is happening in this country. I don't think any of us can look to the main stream media for truth or accuracy.

Poor white trash
I come from certified poor white trash: the Pineys of NJ, who are a disappearing minority as the state is rapidly losing what's left of any open lands, let alone the Pines, where it's more and more rare that people can elect to live in isolation and support themselves on a little kitchen garden, with some seasonal hunting and a bit of occasional poaching, intermittent work like wrapping some wreathes for the citifolk for their holidays, and a little fishing and a little rabbit trapping. They called my people dirt poor. When I was a child, an annual gift was a new silver dollar. Many times they were the only money in the house, but my mother had became a self-taught bookkeeper, my father worked in sales all of his life, so I could become a teacher who married an engineer who produced a son who is a computer expert who married a lawyer, who herself is the great-grandchild of Italian immigrants. Being poor is not ennobling, neither is it such an impediment that "hegemonic oppression" can exclusively perpetuate generation unto generation of impoverished populations in the US, where upward mobility and economic fluidity is great enough to keep the esteemed Fortune 500 in constant fluctuation from year to year. I have seen a Vietnamese immigrant for whom English was her third language graduate a high school valedictorian. I have seen a young black man achieve an 800 (perfect) math score on his SATs and secure an appointment to Annapolis. More interestingly, I have recently learned of a former student who could barely sit through a class period without disruption join the Marines and become a member of one of its exhibition bands. In a reading piece I use in college, the author uses an anecdote to say, "Don't let imagined forces keep you from achieving." The story is that she once saw an outdoor Barnum and Bailey Circus and came across the elephants standing at their picket stakes. She asked the animal tender how big the stakes were. He pulled one from the ground, and it was no bigger than a normal tent stake. The elephants didn't realize they were really being tied to a virtual peg and could easily break away. The big animals let the image of a giant, powerful force hold them in place. Victimology has kept entire segments of the Am. populace staked in place, even as they achieved the civil rights and voting rights movements of the mid-20th C., one of the greatest revolutions of all mankind. The Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of the world may occasionally achieve some economic release for a few chosen, like Jackson family members, but are mostly now themselves those tent pegs keeping control and making sure no one escapes.

Good riddance
Great column. The system worked the way it's supposed to. Imus crossed the line one two many times. His advertisers decided he cost them more customers than he brought in. They pulled the plug. End of story. The first amendment was not involved. Now Imus can continue his pathetic, juvenile, racist, sexist schtick by joining Howard Stern on satellite radio or spew his garbage from a bench in Central Park as he has a right to do under the Constitution.

Wrong about white males
Kathleen Parker is wrong on several counts, but mostly about the Imus show being a draw for white males. The show was a draw for anybody who wanted to listen to Imus being Imus--outspoken, outrageous, politically left of center, aging hippie and maverick. If anything, it was a draw for the liberal media elite who loved being alternately abused and showcased as Imus's guests.
