Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Is Hillary Clinton's inevitability less inevitable?

The growing consensus seems to be that the former first lady's ascendancy as first woman president of the U.S. is less assured than previously thought, thanks in large part to the junior senator from Illinois, Barack Obama.

This is polite talk from the emperor's court. The naked truth is, Hillary has a bigger problem than Obama. Anyone who has heard her speak knows what it is, so we may as well talk about it.

That voice.

Every time Hillary opens her mouth, Americans are reminded of two things: (1) she's not Bill, and (2) she's as tone-deaf in the presence of human beings as she was singing ``The Star-Spangled Banner" in Iowa recently.

Until that moment, it was not known that anyone could sing that badly. To her credit, Hillary has since poked fun at herself, offering to step away from the microphone, for example, when a group was about to sing ``Happy Birthday.''

No one can help the voice they're born with -- much. But they can learn to adjust the volume, and to take the temperature of a room before speaking. And especially, to avoid faking a local accent, pretending to be something they're not. Southern, for instance.

In Selma, Ala., last weekend at the "Bloody Sunday" commemoration, Hillary auditioned for a dual role -- not just Southerner, but Southern preacher in the style of a Martin Luther King Jr.

That dry rustling you hear is the sound of millions of people cringing.

It was clear that Hillary was trying to imitate the oratorical style of her black predecessors to the pulpit -- something no white person should ever attempt. But what she must have imagined sounded like passion was to mere mortals the screech of an angry woman.

Her audience, nevertheless, was polite and affirming (Southerners are like that), even as she turned on the worst fake accent since Kevin Costner played Robin Hood. Shouting the words from a gospel hymn, Clinton was so off-key that anyone tuning in would have assumed it was a joke -- a parody of a politician speaking in native tongues, Granny Clampett auditioning on "American Idol."

"I DON'T FEEL NO WAYS TIRED," she said with the robotic twang of a computer generated Southerner. "I COME TOO FARRRR FRUM WHERE I STARTED FRUM. NOBODY TOLD ME THAT THE ROAD WOULD BE EASY."

Somewhere deep in the brains of every man listening was a little lizard shouting: Somebody hit the mute button, for God's sake, hit the mute!

In politics, we're not supposed to talk about style over substance, especially when it comes to women. But no male politician would get away with what Hillary pulled in Selma. Moreover, speaking style is not irrelevant to leadership, as Americans have noted the past six years.

Tone. Voice. Cadence. These may seem superficial, less important than the substance of a candidate's message. But they suggest something innate about the person speaking -- awareness (or the lack thereof) and the ability to merge with an audience, to persuade, calm, inspire and reassure. Or not.

When a person's style distracts from substance, we have a problem. When a person's voice makes listeners recoil and want to be somewhere else, that person is not going to be an effective communicator.

But what about substance? What was Clinton thinking when she hijacked a gospel hymn and effectively mocked her audience? Her speech exposed not just an incompetent ear, but disrespect for the people gathered.

Would Clinton affect a Brooklyn accent with a Jewish audience remembering the Holocaust? OY VEY, LEMME TELLYA, HONEY!

The female Clinton, unlike her husband, simply lacks a feel for communication, no matter how many hugs she delivers. While President Clinton could become one with his audience -- his slightly hoarse voice conveying so much empathy that the hungry wanted to feed him -- Sen. Clinton's voice sends mannequins into a fetal curl. She is the rain to Bill's parade.

It may not be Hillary's fault that her voice sounds like it was fashioned from metal, but it is her fault that she sounds like a car alarm when she's handed a microphone. It is her fault that she panders -- badly -- to her audiences.

Her performance last weekend in Selma revealed more than atonality. Like a warped bell, Hillary Clinton rings untrue.

Preaching in Selma
Hilary is not the only faker, please note that Obama had his go at being a Black Southern Preacher too. And did nearly as miserably as Mrs. Clinton.

Sadly, it appears that the Black 'Leadership', will continue to support this farce, by both candidates.

Why would anyone vote for a candidate who wants to take your money and give it to someone else reputed to be less fortunate?

Luck, fortune, has little to do with success in life, redistribution of earned wealth has less.

Hillary is Everybody and Nobody
Well. It's obvious to me that Hillary is confused.

She took an internal poll (because she can't do anything without taking a poll or "listening")that revealed she believed her audience was Southern and wanted to hear something in a Sourthern dialect.

So Hillary did what Hillary does best. She said what she thought people wanted to hear.

Nevermind that she didn't have knowledge or skill in communicating this way. Nevermind that it wasn't genuine. When listening to polls, nothing is genuine - everything is merely response. There's no leadership, there's only followership.

Unfortunately for Hillary, America wants its leaders to have a firm foundation and sense of who they are, and to convey that integrity along with their messages.

Like all slick politicians that put their finger to the wind and position themselves to advantage (through polling, i.e. "listening") when the wind shifts, Hillary shifts. And occasionally, she gets a wrong reading, shifts and, well, Selma happens.

Awful
I cringed in absolute horror and disbelief. It was awful in the extreme. Unbelievably embarrassing. Further words fail me.

And GOD said
This is a wonderful observation pointing out the weight of "Voice". Remember Carl Sagan...and how he affected so many with what was actually pretty much drivel. Didn't matter, he did good. Listen to Stephen Hawking, which requires considerable effort, and imagine how little of his pretty heavy realizations have affect on any significant amount of people. Probably does more harm than good. Almost every used car purchased on a lot could be had for 30% less than paid... why do you suppose that is so? Bill Clinton knows why, so does Hillary and so does Kathleen.

Funniest (and most truthful) line...
"She is the rain to Bill's parade."
LMAO!!! Thanks Kathleen!

Kathleen on Hillar
Finally! Kathleen Parker became the "someone" who at last wrote what I've been thinking for years which no one else ever seemed brave enough to mention about Hillary, either verbally or in writing. The woman has an absolutely tin ear as to how she sounds. All her nurturing talk never rings true because the voice constantly reveals the opposite of a nurturing personality.

Yeah, but isn't it a little bit unfair..
...that a corrupt, iron-fisted, military-hating, hard-core socialist not get the Democratic nomination just because of her grating voice?

I really thought that she would be only candidate in the field by now. And if you think Al Gore went over the deep end, just wait until Hillary comes up short of her life-long goal.

my 2 cents
Ms. Parker, as usual, makes good points with just the right hint of humor without getting hysterical. Good point about Sen. Clinton's voice. No matter how smart the woman is there is just something about her that really turns a LOT of people off. So be it.

And somewhere Tammy Wynette is laughing.

BO to me is likable. I am not wholly in accord with some of his policies, but he does seem to be a likable guy. But is there any THERE there? We'll see.

As for seeing the actual performances - I missed them both.

Silly me

Hillary Clinton's Voice
Am I the only guy out here who hears Roseanne Barr's annoyingly nasal Chi-town whine every time HC opens her mouth? Think about it. Remember Roseanne shrieking the Star Spangled Banner at a baseball game about 10 years ago? It's the same damned thing in my ears. As a southerner who knows exactly how that hymn should have sounded - arghhhh!

Was that a voice or a train wreck?
Thanks Kathleen and Dave, Hillary's voice has set my ears on edge as well. Don't on air news reporters study voice modulation in school? You never hear regional accents from news anchors. Hillary's handlers should pull out the old hook when she goes off into the realm of regional accents.

Accents...
...hard to accomplish. Even actors need intensive coaching. Even M. Streep did badly in Sophie's Choice. And no one seemed to coach Hillary, as she accented her /r/ instead of allowing it to escape from a gently open mouth. (Hmmm....gently.)
Barack came closer, with his enunciation of "befo'e" for "before," but heavens to Betsy, when ever "befo'e" this day did you hear him with a Southern accent? Pshhh! Never.
Two phony folks running against each other. Lan' sakes alahve! Ah do decla'e! Don' that beat all!

Totally Off Key
Hilary can't sing, can't be honest, can't be authentic, can't be President. She can be vicious, she can be ruthless, she can be a total phony. All her phoniness came out in Selma. That accent was laughable but it is in keeping with her complete devotion to pandering and trying to convince the American people that she is qualified to be President .She is not. She was a failure on health care, was against the welfare reform bill and spent most of her time promoting her book. Duh ! I am a New Yorker and she is an ineffective senator. The only reason she won this last time was $$$$. She spent 30 million and her opponent had $350,000 to spend . Quite a race.....Barak has it all over her in terms of genuineness and honesty. Let's hope the American people find out all about the shady behavior of Mrs. Clinton and turn her out to pasture.

Hilarious Hillary.....
Gosh..... her voice almost makes me feel sorry for Bill.... Not only did he have to duck ash trays being hurled at him, but maybe worse..... that voice.... a screech owl would sound better.
I've had many occasions to hear people try to sing who can't. There seems to be a correlation between intelligence and being able to carry a tune.... Just a general observation.... Probably not always true..... But in this case....???
Some were just lucky. God gave them a lucky gift.... Enter stage left.... The Dixie Bitche.....errr....rather, Chickies....errr.....aahh.... Slu.... Now watch yer mouth Dick...

The enemedia must be horrified
Their annointed candidate is a disaster and there's no amount of lipstick they can put on this pig that can cover the phoniness, cynicism and naked quest for power of Mrs. Bill Clinton. Not even the most careful staging or selective editing can disguise the woman's creepiness.

I used to liken the sound of Hillary's voice to that of fingernails on a chalkboard, but that seems so inadequate to describe the shrill screeching she emits daily. Can anyone imagine living with that? My total disgust for her husband has gradually turned from sympathy to respect. The man is a saint, living with with a she-devil.

Don't get me wrong, he still ranks as one of the sorriest Presidents ever, but at least he comes off as a guy with whom I could have a beer and joke around (but not play golf).

She, on the other hand, is a carping mother-in-law, a crazy bag lady shouting at passing cars, or the pushy church lady who steamrolls everybody and runs everything.

These descriptions also seem inadequate, don't they? I'll work on some better ones, but M. Savage probably comes closest with his "Mommy Dearest" comparison.

Gathering of Eagles/Move America Forward
Not on topic but important. These two great organizations are combining efforts for the pro troop rally in DC on March 17th. Move America Forward has organized a caravan that starts tomorrow in SF and ends on the 17th in DC. There are about 20 stops scheduled for the caravan. If you can't be in DC on the 17th to show your support go to one of the rallys. You can find the information here:

Hillary's Worst Nightmare

.....Ms. Parker ...

.....A young articulate black opponent who threatens to take all the black voters that the Clintons took for granted ...

.....In a recent speech Obama sounded more like Bill Cosby than Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton ...if he can get blacks to buy into his message then he will marginalize the influence of the Jacksons and the Sharptons and that will be a good thing for blacks and for America ...

.....I think the GOP and Conservatives should be thankful that Obama has come onto the scene .....COLOSSUS

Summon a Vocal Coach
I very much enjoy singing in many styles, but I was born with "a little voice" as my various voice coaches have kindly told me. Mrs. Clinton has been born with a tin ear. This is the genetic sweepstakes and in neither case is it a personal fault or a fatal flaw unless you allow it to be one.

Mrs. Clinton needs to summon a voice coach instanter. She needs to learn to speak from her diaphragm, not from her nose; she needs to learn to moderate her volume (that's why God gave us pin-on wireless microphones, dear); and she needs to drop the pitch of her speaking voice at least from High B flat to the G above Middle C. A lawyer I worked for who was an ex-Marine taught me that the way to make the most of one's "little voice" is to drop the pitch -- a lower-pitched voice has a lot more carrying power than a high pitched voice, after you leave babyhood. (The batlike screech of a toddler can clear a room even faster than Ms. Clinton's voice and is in fact used to train Navy SEALs to resist interrogation.)

And the absolute bottom line of the tone deaf is "NEVER ATTEMPT TO DO AN ACCENT YOU DO NOT NATURALLY POSSESS." The same genetic flaw that made you tone deaf also makes you incapable of discerning the speech cadence and flow of a foreign accent.

But of course the first step on the road to rehabilitation is to admit you have a problem. Good luck with that one, Clinton Campaign Staff.

For once,
I actually felt a little sorry for and embarrased for Mrs. Bill Clinton. Nevah befo'e did I thinks that would happen.

What's the matter with you people?
I think Hillary's speech was wonderful. She was so charmingly "Southern Black" with her accent and she should not change a single "Y'all" as she tours all over the South speaking to other groups of people. They will all understand how warm, wonderful and fuzzy a person she really is...

Ms Parker
Good points, and HRC is fair game since GWB's accent and verbal gaffes have been fodder for comics and politicians alike. Goose and gander you know. Hey that voice does kinda remind me of a goose.

All Blacks?
Hey some of you, watch it with the 'all blacks' are falling for this Hilliary/Obama cr*p, or for that matter anything democrat. Most Blacks I know think they are crazy!

Ouch!
Hillary may be trying to wrest the title given to Al Gore by Jonah Goldberg--"human toothace"

Collossus, I'm not so sure we should be thankful for Obama. He seems to have gained a certain cachet among conservatives since he became a legitimate challenger to Shrillary, but be careful what you wish for. He is every bit as hard left as Clinton, and may have a better chance at winning the general election.

What comes through with her...
Motives DO come through...not always..not obvious to everyone...but when you have someone like Shrillery who's ONLY desire to govern is for power..then that disingenious, dishonest and malovent (sp?) motive is what speaks with most of her antics.

JohnGalt..
Obama is farther left than Ted Kennedy..he's just wrapped in a prettier package. I sure hope people start listening to the SUBSTANCE of his message..although he's trying his best to hide his substance is pretty Hallmark soundbites.

Like Hugh said yesterday...in the old days, you really knew where people honestly stood. Today the liberals try and hide what they really believe.
Isn't that disgusting?

Reverend Hillary?
I always thought that "Reverend" in front of a name meant that you were called by God to preach His unsearchable riches -- as, for example, by someone serving as pastor of a congregation. "Reverend" is an oxymoron when used by persons whose agenda is primarily self-promoting and/or purely political.

"Reverend HILLARY" makes about as much sense, I guess, as "Reverend Jesse Jackson" and "Reverend Al Sharpton." Somehow I cannot see these three Reverends serving the Lord in a place that is not in the limelight. The pay scale just would not be enough to support their regular lifestyle

Does Hillary remind you
of the character played by Angela Lansbury in the original "Manchurian Candidate"?

or the queen in "Sleeping Beauty"
or Cruella De Vil in "101 Dalmations"?

Just wondering.

Butterfly McClinton
Lawdy, Miz Clinton I don't know nuthin' about birthin' babies.

Been saying this for years
I'm glad people are finally picking up on this voice thing. There are lots of reasons southerners won't vote in droves for Hillary. Most of them are righty-lefty issues, some aren't ready for a woman president (not as many as you might think).

One thing most of the country does not understand about southern speech -- in addition to the backward canard that y'all is singular -- is that it is spoken softly. Southerners viscerally recoil at unmodulated speech. We dive for the mute button when Billy Mays comes on our TV to pitch his stuff.

At the end of the day southerners, and I believe people most anywhere, really, are going to ask themselves if they can stand four years of daily aural pounding.

I can't believe Hillary's buddy James Carville isn't all over this thing.

Carville probably
Carville probably did tell her and she probably ignored him like she does other advisors. After all , this is the smartest woman in the US. :>}

Obama the almost-slave descedent
Did anyone else catch Obama talking about how his grandfather was called "boy" even when elderly in Kenya? It sounded like he was desperately trying to find some common base with American blacks, and was clutching at the straw of a mutal past oppression. It sounded at once personally authentic and politically pathetic.

BO
BO is a Halfrican_American

Rodham?
What ever happenned to her "other" name?

Can't sing... but sure can dance
You are RIGHT on with her shrill voice and singing...... But no one dances around an answer,,,, ANY answer, better than Shrill Hill!

John Galt

.....I think you missed my point ...I know that Obama is a leftist and I certainly don't want him to win the general election ...

.....my point was that whenever the Liberal Media wants a black opinion they go to "so-called" leaders like Jackson and Sharpton both of whom are race hustlers ...if the press starts to go to Obama instead ...I think that would be a step in the right direction ..although I don't really see why blacks need a leader at all but the press always wants to annoints one ...

.....Obama does not bring anything to the table that would get him elected ...The Democrats already have the black vote by default ...but he hurts Hillary ...which is good ...and he steals press from the race pimps (Jackson/Sharpton) ...which is good .....COLOSSUS

sbmcgraw
The only package I can think of that is NOT prettier than Teddy Kennedy would be Janet Reno.

"in the old days, you really knew where people honestly stood. Today the liberals try and hide what they really believe."

That is because they would get zero votes if the country knew what they really believe.

Why either?
What experience or expertise makes Hillary or Obama qualified to be our President?
Neither have any executive experience.

Republicans are no better off.
RINO Rudy is the only qualified Republican.

It is early yet.
There are qualified Democrats & Republicans who delay throwing their hat in the ring so MSM has less time for the ainal exams & hatchet jobs.

Finally people are catching up
I lived in NH during the 1992 primary season. I have never been impressed by Hillary Clinton. I just don't think she's smart. I know she's well-educated, but honestly, what has she achieved.........on her own..........without her husband's coattails to ride? I've yet to hear her make an intelligent comment about anything. And remember Coretta Scott King's funeral last year? She spoke right after Bill, and it was insufferable. She should never follow her husband. It only magnifies her oratory incompetence.

It's not the voice, it's the eyes!
The thing that scared me more than her voice was her eyes! Has anyone noticed they look like the ones on the "Runaway Bride", what's her name, Jennifer Willbanks, in Georgia a few years ago? Some scary, bug eyes she's got. As for Sen. Hillary Rodham Rodham's voice, I can't decide whether it sounds like two chalk slates mating or goose farts on a muggy day. She turned a serious occasion into a joke.

Scary!
Kathleen is back! I've missed her wit and sass lately. She has Billary pegged! The thoughts of her sitting in the oval office is enough to send me running to the porcelain god/goddess..How anyone can seriously consider her as a viable candidate for the leader of this great country is beyond me!
