Win or lose, democracy stands

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

And now, ladies and gentleman, a final round of applause for the real winners of the midterm elections: The American people, democracy and, yes, Howard Dean.

Whether their candidates won or lost, Americans can't but feel grateful for a nation and a system of government that allows us every few years to peaceably reinvent ourselves.

On Election Day, no one had to step over a pool of blood to get to the polls; no one had to risk a sniper's bullet or an improvised explosive device to cast a ballot. And no one had to worry that sore losers might drag "traitors" from their cars for preferring a different approach to governance.

It is a remarkable thing, this process we take for granted; it is also good for the rest of the world to witness as Americans shift directions with civility and pledges of unity.

Whether those pledges hold is another matter, but the spirit implicit in the United States of America remains intact.

Following his party's "thumpin'," as the president described Tuesday's election results, George W. Bush articulated what is best about this nation. A reporter had asked how he could work with someone such as presumptive House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who recently referred to Bush as, among other things, incompetent and a liar.

Bush replied: "I've been around politics a long time; I understand when campaigns end, and I know when governing begins. ... If you hold grudges in this line of work, you're never going to get anything done."

Imagine those words coming from a defeated Baathist.

Or Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's as he stepped down. Paraphrasing Winston Churchill, Rumsfeld said: "I have benefited greatly from criticism, and at no time have I suffered a lack thereof."

We are all elevated in such moments when grace finds companionship in humility. That same humble acceptance was apparent among others who will be leaving government soon. All without gunfire, kidnappings or beheadings.

On Tuesday in Iraq, 16 civilians were killed and 22 others wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a cafe in northern Baghdad. Americans exhausted by a war they feel was unnecessary can blame the Bush administration for those events. But they should marvel at the privilege and miracle of democracy.

In exercising that privilege, Americans have voted to change course, as the sound bite goes. That was the clear message to Washington. But the equally important message to the rest of the world went like this: See, we can do this. We are capable of being self-critical; we can be flexible; we can adjust without resorting to chaos.

However our enemies may interpret the outcome of the midterm elections -- or how much they may cheer Rumsfeld's departure -- they must have noticed that we manage to sort our differences without killing each other. Continued...

Non-Voters ought to be ashamed?
Actually, this non-voter was no ashamed, but just pissed off.

I moved across State lines last year, and got caught in the confusion of differing "systems". In Virginia, from which I originally hailed, registering my vehicles, and myself as a driver through DMV automatically made you a registered voter.

Apparently here in WV they like to make it harder, and require you to take time off of work, make a special trip downtown to the courthouse, and fill out copious paperwork in order to be a Registered Voter. What stuff and nonsense!

I was not PERMITTED to vote, because West Virginia was too stupid to recognize my citizenship, despite payment of taxes in great volume. GRRRRRRR....

Guess who really won
Many people seem to think , now that the Demo's won control of congress, the war on terror is over. Judging from the celebration the insanists...I mean jihadists, are doing, they think the hard part is over. That indicates, to me, they believe the Demo's are going to force America to surrender. I believe they are going to have our commander-in-chief so busy testifying in defense of trivial , if not false charges against everyone remotely connected to the defense of America against the gangs who want to destroy our way of life, including as many AMERICANS as possible, he won't be able to carry on the war. The Demo's think they can talk things over with the terrorists and everything will be perfect, as if the jihadists, who gladly blow up their children at the outside chance of making our President look less than perfect, much less kill some AMERICANS, will make friends with them and leave us alone, if not become best buds. These people actually believe the war is our fault, that 911 was not the terrorists fault. Maybe the terrorists are not the only people who are out of their freaking minds. Rosie O'
Donnell, or however she spells that curse she calls her name, said not to fear the terrorists. They are mothers and fathers. Mothers and fathers do not strap bombs to their kid and send them to a mall to blow up kids who do not even know why the insanists..oops, are mad... I mean angry. Was she just trying to be funny? Either way, that was sick. People who base the choices they make in life on lies and other inaccurate information without any attempt to change their beliefs (jihadists, liberal leftists) are not sane and will destroy themselves and likely everything around them unless they are kept from having their way. In a way it is not entirely their fault, if they truly believe what they are doing is right. It is the people who teach these lies to them who are the true culprits. It is easy to see the holes in both the jihadists and the Demo's platform, if you do not get brainwashed by the media. The jihadists, with their 72 virgin orgy they have waiting for them in Heaven, yet still have riotous demonstrations whenever one of them gets killed, vowing revenge for helping one of them get to the orgy sooner. The Demo's criticize republicans for anything they can get anyone to listen to them bray...I mean say, then turn around and defend themselves or one of their cohorts for the same thing, or worse. Their are many , many instances of both of those examples of people basing everything they claim to stand on being an obvious, straight up, they don't care who notices, LIE. The real winners in the AMERICAN election was the colluding, mainstream media. Not to mention the 2 billion or so spent in the muckraking both parties were doing, the obvious agenda the media were promoting won nearly everything they wanted. Without the pitifully biased reporting (and exaggerating, and lying,) displayed in the mainstream media, where much of AMERICA gets all of their information about politics, the Demo's would not have had a chance. As it was, the Republicans still came close in many of the races. But close ain't no cigar in politics. Now, thanks to the mainstream media and the Demo's, much of AMERICA is basing a very dangerous part of their lives on lies and deceit. And the terrorists who want to do nothing less than kill every person in the world, who does not believe exactly as they do, are celebrating. Maybe they won.
