Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It is axiomatic that when you reach the summit, people will try to take you down. Witness history, and now, Katie Couric.

The rising "CBS Evening News" anchor, who is trying to shed her morning "perk" for evening gravitas, has been dissected, analyzed, criticized, labeled, niched and positioned to within an inch of her life.

Can she do it? Of course she can. Can she talk? And how. Can she conduct an interview? Yes, of course, but we'll probably have to forgo the legs.

See what I mean? I hate it when I do that.

But let's face it, when you appear on television wearing a short skirt and high heels, revealing gams only a personal trainer can buy, you invite commentary. Couric can't have wished it otherwise, and there are worse things than being noted for great legs.

Such as having a public colonoscopy. There I go again. In fairness to my inner feline, certain acts invite objective criticism, and surely having a colonoscopy in front of millions of television viewers qualifies.

At the time, I wrote a column critical of Couric's now-legendary probe and was rewarded with a slapdown by hundreds of her fans, including my mother, who saw only courageous public service in the televised procedure.

That is to say, Couric has the sort of base any politician would envy. Her fans may tilt toward the taupe end of the age demographic, but that's called a majority these days as increasing numbers of baby boomers enjoy senior discounts.

To put an end to any speculation, I'm pulling for Katie. She's paid her dues and earned her place at the big table. The idea that a woman is somehow less acceptable in a "serious" role is silly on its face and otherwise is the stuff of Taliban fantasy.

That said, the decision to send Couric around the country on a "listening tour," scheduled to wrap up Monday, was a poor calculation. First off, the free-associative mind goes straight to that other trailblazing female, Hillary Clinton, who launched a listening tour before running for U.S. Senate.

Katie, Hillary, Katie, Hillary - two liberal peas in a pod? The question burrows in the mind and wants to stay.

And what's with this listening shtick, anyway? Couric isn't running for public office. Being an anchor isn't an elected position, though viewers ultimately will vote with their remotes. But shouldn't a newsperson be about the news rather than about the person?

The fact of the tour, which is taking Couric to six cities in order to expose her to what the media like to call "Ordinary Americans," merely confirms what those same Americans already dislike about the media - and especially about media personalities on the celebrity level of a Couric.

That is, Couric and others who decide what Americans should know are out of touch with real (preferable to "ordinary") Americans - the ones trying to raise families with familiar values, who volunteer to serve in the military, and who believe that the media are working against the country's best interests.

If you only talk to others like you, which is the case for many journalists inside the media centers of New York and Washington, you begin to think that everyone thinks - or should think - as you do. The joke in the green room, where talking heads gather before the food fight, is the guy who says, "I've been out there! I've got the pulse (of Ordinary America)."

Which means he flew to Topeka that morning, parked himself at the counter of the Roadkill Cafe during lunchtime, interviewed a few locals, and flew back to D.C. in time for "Scarborough Country."

Couric's tour has the same feel. The girl has pizzazz enough to bottle and sell on eBay and the kind of charisma that will get her through red and blue America with Clintonian (Bill's) effect. But what she'll learn along the way shouldn't come as a surprise.

Most Americans want one thing with their evening newscast - news.

The old-fashioned kind that offers depth and context without spin. Straight reporting without commentary, implicit or otherwise. News that respects viewers' intelligence and allows them to draw their own conclusions.

With all the talk shows and galaxies of opinionators orbiting the blogosphere, the world is not starved for commentary. What's most critical to the mix - indeed what drives the rest - comes down to three words: reporting, reporting, reporting.

All Couric has to do to set herself apart from the pack is dig deep and tell it like it is. The rest is opinion. And, as Couric once so vividly reminded us, opinions are like colons. Everybody's got one.

Couric is a mental midget
She has all the gravitas of a Roadrunner cartoon.

BrianR - don't bad-mouth "Roadrunner"
LOL - Couric - a mental midget!! Love the visual - so appropriate.

I haven't watched Kutie Katie in the morning for years - I see no reason to try and stomach her in the evening. Besides, when I want unbiased news, I watch Brit Hume on FoxNews - or anyone on FoxNews before I'll watch, listen or believe ANYONE in the national media.

Give me a break
Elkiejg - you are one dim bulb if you believe that
ANYTHING on Fox News is unbiased. Creepy old Rupert himself would laugh at that statement.

I haven't watched Couric in years either, except in passing. She may be a piece of fluff for all I know, but
she doesn't spew venom a la Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity &
Franken, so she is at least better than those creeps.
When I want news I read the newspaper.

Opinion vs. Journalism
Lisa, there's supposed to be a difference. Just the fact that you put Couric in the same category as Coulter, Hannity or Limbaugh shows that you don't get it, and neither does Couric.

Couric?Are you serious or delerious?
Lisa,

Venom is what keeps our attention, and Couric certainly has provided her cutesy share, but might I embellish just a bit further?

Franken gives us venom, Coulter and Limbaugh give us humorous perspective and Hannity takes no prisoners.

I suspect Katie will add a vaccuous presence that'll make you wish for Connie Chung's return.

Another reason NOT to watch the news!
<< Can she do it? Of course she can. >>

Yes, I, too, can read!

<< Can she talk? And how. >>

What woman can't?? Can she say anything intelligent? Barely.

<< Can she conduct an interview? Yes, of course, but we'll probably have to forgo the legs. >>

Was not aware Katie's legs in any way qualified her for this position.

Of course can she conduct an interview. Can she conduct an unbiased interview? You know, instead of lobbing softball questions to liberals while pouring on the heat, and actually being very rude to conservative quests. Extremely unlikely.

Big dael
So the Perky One is going to fill dan Rather's old seat...big whoop! So we trade one dyed in the wool liberal for another, nobody cares. You know what you're going to get with all of the MSM talking heads, someone who reads the teases that someone else writes. I can read and write, so I guess that I am qualified to be an anchor on a network, right?

Flagwaver...
... you said you "can read and write" so you're qualified to anchor the news.

Actually, you're probably overqualified since you can write. Kouric et al are only news readers.

I have a hard time envisioning Kouric actually writing it.

Thinking... thinking... thinking....

Nope. Totally drawing a blank on that image.

to BeeBee
Sorry, but I do get it. I am aware of the difference
between a journalist and political pundit. I am also
aware of the difference between a political pundit and
a satirist. Unfortunately, said satirist decided to
become a politician so one would hope that he would clean
up his act, but I don't see anything pointing in that
direction so far.

That you should think that calling people names (the nicest thing they do) is a humorous perspective, maybe you should grow up. Sounds very adolescent to me. The person who wrote immediately after you said that "venom is what keeps our attention." DO YOU GET IT! Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh, and Franken bring out the worst in people. It doesn't matter what side of the aisle they are on. Katie does not have that effect on people. Therefore, she is better. It is the ATTITUDE I have
been talking about all along.

If you want to know what this venom is doing to us, take
a look at all the articles on this website. By every
one that has an ounce of compassion in them (check out
immigration ones by Chavez and Colson and the one that
deals with mental health), these are the ones with the
fewest checks. The least read, the least admired. It
is not only incredible, it is a terribly sad commentary
on what we have become in this nation. There was one
written today on the mental health issue that could
make any decent person cry. The self-centeredness
is nearly beyond belief.

I don't know if LCH&F have made us what we are today, or
if we have made them not only what they are by feeding
off our hatreds and insecurities, but making them rich
in the process. And don't they handle their wealth
well? Does anyone really think that viagra is the most
scandalous part of that trip to the Dominican Republic?

And to make matters worse, Coulter and Limbaugh are
calling everyone who is not of their ilk godless. So they are trying to define the terms of the Christian religion, which I also resent thoroughly. I do not want
to be lumped with them in any shape or form, especially
when it comes to religion. I don't know about Hannity. I know him only by reputation. I have never seen him on TV for more than a couple of minutes.

If you want to hear a brilliant satirist without an
ounce of venom, tune in Steven Colbert. John Stewart is
not too bad either.

I think I finally understand it...
How do you argue that can be brash and in your face and yet be different and acceptable when compared to liberals. I'm not sure liberals will agree. But it comes down to having core principles. (also explains godlessness to some extent) Conservatives like Limbaugh, Coulter, and even Hannity (though he grates on me) hold core values and measure the world against those values. They may do some name-calling, but mostly, they expose the hypocrasy of liberals. Liberals believe anything that feels good is good. They also want to make sure everybody does what they, the elite, think everybody should do. So they are torn between telling people what to do and pandering to people to get/keep themselves in political power. They live and die by soundbites rather than arguing for a political position on its merits. The result is that they say things which are dutifully recorded by "professional" journalists and amatuer scribes. With the technology today, it takes little effort to go back and identify where somebody has said one thing to appeal to one group and something else entirely different to appease to another group. Ann and Rush have made a fortune exposing these things that liberals have said. Liberals have no defense, because it is all out there in the public record. There could be an issue of context, but in most cases there is not.

Franken, Moore, and the Air America, looney left types want to believe that conservatives, and more importantly, Bush and his administration are evil. So they create scenarios and dig for embarrasing situations. But they don't provide any context if it would be exculpatory and they often resort to exaggeration and outright lies. Unfortunately, the lies are also easily proven as lies and that is the other thing people like Ann and Rush do. They point out the lies. So now any liberal who wants to retain credibility (like Alan Colmes) must twist and bend or draw the worst possible conclusion as the most likely or assume evil intent where there clearly is none in order to impugn conservatives and shield their own "warriors". It's sad really. How many times has Rush called a specific person a feminazi in over 15 years of broadcating 3 hours a day, 5 days a week? Compare that with how many times Bush specifically has been called a liar or worse by Franken or Garafolo on Air America in its short existence?

No doubt Rush and Ann can be quite harsh on liberals. But mostly they simply replay quotes that liberals themselves have made rather than using ad hominem. Liberals see no difference, but conservatives can see a clear difference. Liberals appeal to conservatives sense of what is right and wrong, because conservatives have a sense of right and wrong, whereas for liberals, anything goes. You can't really embararass a liberal. You can only upset them by exposing how different they are from mainstream, values-holding Americans, who in the majority do believe in God and decency.

BTW, again many liberals express pride in their atheism. Other liberals are like atheists who are afraid of being exposed as such to the American public who is largely Christian. And I can't speak for Ann, but I don't think she would say that everybody who isn't Christian is Godless. She might consider some religions to be following a false god, or in the case of Islam, a false prophet. But I think somebody who doesn't follow the teaching of God as best they can and who doesn't repent when they fall short, is pretty much godless. One has to wonder which god it is that liberals believe in, follow, and repent when they sin against that is for abortion and assisted suicide and legalized theft and adultery and homosexuality and lying or fraud? Ceertainly none that I have been exposed to take that position.

Hi feedfwd
Just what is it that you understand. I would suggest
that one of the most important things you don't understand
is that all liberals are not Al Franken/Bill Maher liberals. Most liberals wish they would just shut up.
However, unlike like O'Reilly who invites the opposing
side on his show and then screams at them to SHUT UP, they are just too darn polite for their own good.

AF/BM are the ones who are making all the noise and the ones who will be responsible for the left losing the next
election, if in fact they do. It is not because Americans
are in love with the present powers that be either in
their policies or personal lives.

Are they saying that Bush is evil? I don't know. I
can't even get Air America where I live. I'll be they
are saying that he is inept, and they certainly have
the truth there.

Bush thinks he was selected by God. Who am I to argue
the point. If it is true, I think that it is time
for another rainbow and a promise to never do that again.

Lisa:
FYI: Bill O'Reilly's no conservative.

I don't expect much from newsreaders
I can't get real excited about anybody who is a newsreader--These people aren't profound thinkers. I don't believe they really mold the opinions of the public. (No, Walter's eyebrows didn't really make his audience oppose the Vietnam war.)

As for Katie, I say, bring on the short skirts and the leg lights.

Dear Lisa,
If you think you are getting unbiased news from a newspaper you are deluding yourself.

2 peas
Katie Couric and CBS deserve each other. I can't stand either. It's amazing to me how many people can't see right through her. She is such a B*tch underneath that phony front she puts on. It is so obvious.
