Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The Obama Campaign dominated college campuses this fall. There is no way around that. At my own campus, the University of Virginia, seeing Obama paraphernalia on my way to class became as common as seeing North Face fleeces. Thus, it was no surprise that voters under the age of 30 voted for Barack Obama 2 to 1. The youth voter turnout increased one percentage point to 18% from the 2004 presidential election.

But the youth vote is not a lost cause for conservatives. Ronald Reagan won it in 1984 and a conservative candidate can win it again. College campuses are a major battleground in the war of ideas and this election shows that conservatives on campus must become more effective in conveying their ideas. Countless stories have been written about how the Obama Campaign successfully used new technology to reach students who might not normally be interested in politics. Text messages, Facebook groups and Twitter diaries became successful political tools during this election cycle. Conservative students should embrace this new technology, but they should not ignore the importance of good messaging, sound policy and picking their battles. From my experience of four years of college and almost three years of law school at the University of Virginia, here are five ways that conservative students can become more effective on campus.

1. Build relationships with the school newspaper.

Conservatives should keep in mind the old Mark Twain adage, "Never pick a fight with a man who buys his ink by the barrel." Despite new technology, school newspapers still play an important role. School newspapers on large campuses are printed five days a week and are often the main daily source of information for college students. Many conservatives have started their own newspapers or magazines, but these usually are weekly, monthly or even quarterly publications. Regardless of if there is an alternative conservative paper or not, conservatives should develop relationships with the school newspaper and encourage other conservatives to join. This will likely lead to better balanced stories and more coverage of conservative events, which will help conservatives spread their ideas more broadly.

2. Co-sponsor debates with the opposition.

Hosting an articulate conservative speaker can reenergize the conservative movement on a college campus. Yet these speakers often only reach supporters as opponents do not attend. To become more effective, conservatives should co-sponsor debates with their opposition. By doing so, conservatives will have the opportunity to reach a wider diversity of students, including those who usually disagree with them, and possibly gain more supporters.

3. Address more parochial college issues.

Conservative students should pick issues directly affecting college campuses and work tirelessly on them. While students can add something to the debate on nuclear nonproliferation, international crime and the War in Iraq, most students are obviously not experts on these issues. Students are experts, however, on issues affecting college campuses. Students know how university policies can have impact upon their educational experience. Many conservative students have won arguments on speech codes, university funding of only liberal speakers and proposed new curriculum.

4. Recruit and support conservative candidates at every level.

Who controls how student activity fees are distributed on college campuses? Often, it is a student elected to a position such as Vice President for Organizations. This person decides how much funding the University Democrats and College Republicans receive each year. Among others, student officers often make decisions about office allocation, what clubs to recognize and what speakers to host. Just as students should address university issues, they also should run candidates for these student positions.

5. Take responsibility for a conservative education.

Rather than just complain about the lack of classic conservative books in university curriculum, conservatives should read them on their own time and find others with whom to discuss these books. Students must educate themselves on conservatism to effectively educate others. Ultimately, and as always, conservative success rests on ideas--not slogans.

Ms. Agness
An excellent article, and one that college conservatives should remember if they are to survive in academia.

Karin
Don't panic Karin that the battle HAS to be won amoung younger voters. There are groups you need to hold your own in and college age people HAVE ALWAYS been a liberal majority. Winston Churchill said "If you aren't a liberal when you are young you have no heart and if you are not a conservative when you are older you have no head." Emotional arguments and intentions not results are a fact of life when you are in your 20's. Take for example school newspapers. If you think liberals generally go into journalism then college newspapers are way out there left. In 1984 the year you mention I remember the best you could do was write a counterpoint editorial but not much past that. We won 49 states in 1984 because even young people didn't want "change". It wasn't because young people suddenly became conservative. The same thing now. The country wanted change and so if the average person is voting to the left then you would be statistically shocked to see numbers other than the ones you did for Obama. Concentrate on the fact we all get one vote and it doesn't matter what the demographics are. That is a mistake that will demoralize you. Get as many votes as you can, where you can and don't get caught trying to chase demographics. People will vote for what they feel is best for the country at the end.

well put
graduated with my bs degree this last summer. Still in contact with friends on my campus I used facebook to tell my beliefs, lies by the media, and policies used by both candidates.

WOW!
Agness really gets it. This is the first time I have seen a truly strategic approach towards expanding the GOP electorate so far. This is one smart cookie. If she keeps this up we could be saying President Agness at some juncture.

it can't be done
Radicals (not liberals) run most college campuses. Political correctness and orthoxy is in control (espeically in non-science programs). Just study what happened on the Duke campus after the false rape charges. Literally, the professors used slurs, encouraged marchers to carry signs saying "castrate." Moderate liberal Lawrence Summers had to resign from Harvard due to his stating of a rhetorical question.

These same campuses teach lies (similar to those of Jeremiah Wright) teaching how all "whites" are guilty of evil. The revisionist history that they teach has no basis whatsoever in fact. Even though so many "white" historical groups never really had any power (or colonies or a slave trade) every single "white" is considered "guilty."

On one level, it is ironic that Obama was comfortable going to a church where "whites" were demonized for slavery and Jim Crow -- ironic since he (unlike most "whites") has multiple white slaveholding ancestors. On another level, it shows a profound and deep bigotry. Facts and history do not matter -- what matters is what you "look like." If you "look like" slaveholders from 200 years ago, you are guilty of historical oppression.

I'm doing my best as a Mom of 4
to teach my children the basic differences between socialism and conservativism and the simple laws of economics and our Constitution. To tell the truth it would be much easier if our elected Republicans would act like Conservatives by studying economics and reading Our Constitution themselves instead of helping to keep this country in a funk.

Don't Be Silenced
Another thing conservative students need to remember is not to let the liberals on college campuses intimidate them. Liberals have gotten away with bad behavior simply because most conservatives do not want to become involved in controversy. I would not let a liberal professor silence me.

Another way to stop the nonsense on college campuses is for parents to withdraw their students when faculty conduct is inappropriate; then go to the news media. Colleges do not like adverse publicity. They also do not like dwindling student populations. I think it is time for conservatives to unite to put a stop to this liberal tide.

sorry Katz
What do you suppose happened to the students at Duke who carried banners saying "castrate" and the professors who said vile bigoted things -- and almost caused innocent people to go to prison for decades. Professors actually failed students for being on the lacrosse team to "punish" the "evil white man." If you even said on a college campus (as a student or as a professor) like "Obama is a hypocrite -- he goes to a church which talks about how "evil" whites are -- when he actually has white slaveholding ancestry, when most "whites" do not" -- you would be toast.

There is no way to take back campuses -- they are too far gone.

As I told my sons

As I told my sons before going to college.

Its ok to date a liberal but marry a conservative. Think of the children.

Social Alchemy

The taxpayers are the sugar, the ruling elites are the yeast and the alcohol is the by product of the government programs.

At some point like 2009 when the elites have eaten too much of the taxpayers sugar

The elites will be poisoned by the alcohol by product they produced. (Drunk with power)

They will try to print money (sugar) and spend it.

The money (sugar) becomes worthless the more they try to prime the pump.

When the elites and the by product of their social experiments out number the producers
Something has to give.

We either are going to be all communist or all capitalist we can’t be both.

A nation divided will not stand I think we have reached that historical point.

Not just messaging
Ms. Agness has plenty of perfectly worthwhile ideas for how conservatives can better market their ideas on college campuses. But messaging isn't enough. Quite simply, conservative positions on a number of issues seem so reactionary that no amount of marketing savvy will earn student support. Is there any thoughtful conservative strategist who thinks that the GOP's position on gay marriage, for example, is anything but electoral poison in the future? That college students who have seen gay couples for much of their lives will decide, just because of improved messaging, that the GOP's visceral disdain for gay couples is anything but an abominable affront to human dignity and privacy?

Conservatives have decided to pin their electoral hopes on nostalgia for the past. It will work from time to time. But liberals have on their side the only absolute -- the passage of time. You can have the past. We'll take the future.

Conservative_Sexuality
A very good place to begin would be to lampoon the Progressive Left's use of Sex manuals by which students are supposed to "ask permission" before a kiss, a touch, etc.
It's an SNL type of sketch waiting to happen. Government intrusion hits the back seat in Makeout Lane.

Get Involved in Student Gov. & the Paper
Excellent Ms. Agness. I couldn't agree more with all of your points, most importantly getting involved in student representation on your school campus. I spent two years as a Senator in my student government and gained excellent experience and even made may way onto the Senate Finance Committee; the committee in charge of appropriating student funds annually.

There were a number of other staunch Conservatives on the committee and provided for excellent balance and good representation for the student body. And when there are millions of dollars every year being appropriated, it's best to have such balance and Conservative representation, especially when one sees some of the budget proposals that came across our desks.

Thank you again for an excellent article and excellent advice on fighting the Conservative battle on college campuses.

Being Nasty Doesn't Work
Listen again to the excellent reminder provided in this article---Mark Twain's "Never pick a fight with a man who buys his ink by the barrel". Then attend carefully to all that is said, in a steady drumbeat, by conservatives as they revile the New York Times and all other major newspapers, magazines and journals, network and cable television, colleges, universities, professors, teachers, public elementary and secondary education, lawyers, scientists, academia, and higher education---all part of the hated "elite". College students get the message loud and clear, and it's hard to influence people who know you hate them, their institutions, and all they care about.

conservative campus newspapers
Excellent article.
Conservative students might also consider banding together with other conservative students at nearby campuses ("campii" ?) to produce their own paper.
Students are more likely to listen/read a paper touting a (conservative) philosophy rather than the arguments of a (political) college Republican.
For students especially, it has to be about winning the argument first, not simply being a volunteer for candidates a "party" picks.

Good Points
I agree with what was said in this article, but in order to implement any of these ideas, students need to enter college with a background and foundation of conservatism. Their parents must have helped them to see through the cloud of liberal "feeling politics" and address the issues with both logic and passion. Only by us educating our children on logic and persuasion can we hope to convince any liberal that their way of "thinking" is wrong.

Karin, We're at war, total undeclared...
war from within. They don't debate in the arena of ideas because they cannot win, those in the know, know it's a sham.

We've got to hit them square between the eyes with everything we've got! Nearly every societal ill can be laid at the feet of the marxist-leninist conspiracy, it's all been a charade to take over our country. Now they've really done it. If Conservatives and Christians don't wake up and start fighting now, today, then all is lost. President Obama and his comrades do not want to spread freedom and prosperity at home or world wide. They are the useful idiots of the utopian dream of Communism. They are the moden face of evil.

Great article
If I may suggest a "number six," conservative groups usually need an advisor. Find a good one that is articulate, respectful, and tenured. Any conservative non-tenured professor that does an "up periscope" in the murky waters of academe will be terminated.
Lastly, as Lilly points out, tone is everything. Conservatives are held to a different standard than liberals. We need heaps of evidence, presented in a polite, reasonable fashion and with a winsome sense of humor like the Gipper. Everything she asserts that conservatives do, "revile the New York Times and all other major newspapers, magazines and journals, network and cable television, colleges, universities, professors, teachers, public elementary and secondary education, lawyers, scientists, academia, and higher education---all part of the hated "elite"." is usually based on evidence. Our tone when we present the facts, however, must remain respectful. The audience may then revile the aforementioned, and vote them out.

Pennsylvania Yankee: Really?
“Quite simply, conservative positions on a number of issues seem so reactionary that no amount of marketing savvy will earn student support.”

Really? Do often consider invalidation language a viable substitute for rational discourse? As opposed to the progressive positions on a number of issues that are centered on their fundamental bigotry focused on the demonizing western society in general & minimally-franchised white males in particular? Progressives and free speech? Who is implementing “hate speech” codes to silence critics of the gender/racial spoils game, e.g., quotas, affirmative action? Progressives and civil rights? How about 13th Amendment vs. involuntary servitude: Men being held in prison indefinitely after not paying court-ordered child support. How about the 14th Amendment: a) Civil Rights vs. institutional discrimination: anti- white male affirmative action/quotas b) Right of Due process vs. Sexist “Violence Against Women Act” (VAWA): Men automatically assumed to be guilty when accused of “domestic violence” or rape (e.g.,Duke rape myth.) Thanks to ubiquitous feminist women’s centers on nearly every college campus spewing out their misandry, don’t you think that the same thing that happened at Duke University couldn’t happen on other campuses? How long do you think heterosexual white males are going to put up with their 2nd class citizen status?

Progressives like you have been pinning your hopes on the nostalgia of the same old “Marxist canard” in the guise of feminism and hyphenated-American victim hood in perpetuity. It will work from time to time. But libertarians have on their side the only absolute -- the passage of time. You progressives can have the past with your gay/black/female entitlement. We'll take the future.

Tell me, does having your backside firmly planted in that “to each according to her needs” column of that great socialist equation after obviously helping to elect a MSM hand-picked Fabian Socialist into the White House grant you your morally superior hauteur?

Diversity
Mainstream Academia’s idea of “Diversity”: ethnic, racial, national, gender, and sexual-orientation heterogeneity while maintaining socialist/neo-marxist ideological purity.

Unfortunately, as evidenced by the "DUKE" rape episode & the latent anti-male climate at Duke University, the institutionalized "counter-culture" that dominates most college/university campuses is now the “Establishment” in need of reform.

FeargalX: Hating Whitey...
“On one level, it is ironic that Obama was comfortable going to a church where "whites" were demonized for slavery and Jim Crow -- ironic since he (unlike most "whites") has multiple white slaveholding ancestors.”

I would suggest reading “Hating Whitey” by David Horowitz, “Paved with Good Intensions: Failure of Race Relations in America” by Jared Taylor, and “Ten Things You Can’t Say in America” by Larry Elder- mind you this is from memory.

Unfortunately “Hating Whitey" is not only deemed socially acceptable by the "O-bot" MSM, but also quite lucrative as a profession- just ask Rev. Wright and other hyphenated-American poverty pimps who cling to the myth of "black liberation theology." In fact, Rev Wright is in the process of writing a book. This is just conjecture but I would guess that the title is "Hating Whitey for Dummies." And Rev. Lowery, the author of the Presidential benediction, will likely write the introduction- assuming he can write anything beyond vapid rhymes.

Karin
I sent Senator Obama an e-mail in 02/07,which explained that 1/2 of the people living in America had been born after 1964. This one fact was revolutionary,in that it marked a shifting political landscape. In 1980,when President Reagan won, demographics were being summarized useing the old methods. Things have changed and so have the issues. Today, issues are evaluated through a "Worldview". I joined the words "World" and "View" to expose a metaphor. The future of America, especially for the "Young",is tied to the World. No more sectional, regional or state issues. With this being the landscape of today, the Republican party must first reestablish it's relevance. Hatred and prejudice must give way to compassion and tolerance. GOOD LUCK!!! We will always need a "Two- Party System". We have the Democrats? Can I have a 2nd?

Won't Happen
This won't happen. Conservatives are done. First of all you have to catch these kids before college, college is too late. Kids these days do not beleive in the negativity that the conservative party stands for. Kids are used to being around all different types of people, and not just those that look like them. The republican party is non inclusive of people that are different. The day is over where that is acceptable. Face it, the kids don't want that anymore. Your time is up.

Tuition bills include $ for liberal PIRG
The liberal group PIRG gets donations by sneakily adding them to college fee bills.I discovered that you can opt out of paying the automatic $5 charge on every tuition bill that goes to PIRG- a liberal activist group that garners millions from the agregate of all those little unquestioned fees.
Rather than asking students if they want to contribute, the student has to go through a process online to opt out and have the charge removed.
It may be only $5 for me but to think they have the audactity to charge this in the first place is unconscionable. They assume we are all ONE with their agenda.
If you are incollege-check your bill and opt out of PIRG.

Pennsylvania Yankee: OK
“GOP's visceral disdain for gay couples is anything but an abominable affront to human dignity and privacy?

OK. I’ve got news for you but the one demographic group that overwhelmingly opposes gay marriage are single, black heterosexual females who vote Democrat over 95% of the time- just look at the results of the recent California gay marriage referendum (Proposition 8?) sometime when you aren’t bashing uppity white males who disagree with your esoteric insights.

That being said, speaking as a Jesuit-educated Deist who none the less believes in the salient values associated w/ Judeo-Christian Philosophy, I nevertheless have a strong libertarian streak: ““Morality” shouldn’t be legislated, but “Amorality” shouldn’t be subsidized. You and I would probably agree on most “gay-related” issues, i.e., I am ambivalent WRT “gay civil unions”. I also have a problem with anyone bringing in their own biblical interpretation into the argument. But, in purely secular terms, I have a problem with homosexuals (i.e., congenital sexual dyslexics) trying to attain de facto “normalization” for their behavior via activist judges. Please do not attempt apply you left-wing “invalidation tactics” (i.e., Homophobe-label) on me- I am Homo-hostile like most reasonable people: I don’t fear homosexuals & I think that hey have right to privacy like everyone else, but don’t ever try to convince me that such behavior in “normal.” But in purely secular, biological terms please consider the following: was Darwin wrong?

Big Issue Here
This is a multi-faceted issue. Let me start by saying that the current conservative universe stands little chance of making many inroads on college campuses. The main reason was encapsulated by Lilly.

The kind of conservatism spewed by Demosthenes here or the Limbaugh/Hannity clones on talk radio is based on division and enmity. It ONLY works if you consider those who disagree with you as the enemy. Contemporary college students do NOT accept this as a basic principle. As long as these types are the face and voice of conservatism, you are out of luck. As long as college campuses are your number one enemy, which they seem to have become, you will not change campus culture.

Lilly doesn't get at some of the other reasons. All of the conservative brouhaha is based on sand. The vast majority of students do not experience any of the things you guys whine about so often. Business schools the nation over are pretty conservative places. Engineering and tech programs the same. Students spend way more time trying to get through calculus and chemistry than being brainwashed by the single sociology course they may have to take. College students know that the conservative attitude toward colleges is a fraud.

Young people believe in conservation. They are not distressed by gay people. They enjoy financial aid. They believe education is a good thing. Why would they find conservatism attractive?

So-called Conservatives Don't Understand
...the real problem.

A majority of incoming college freshman have just completed 13 years of liberal (worldview) brainwashing complements of the socialistic, government-funded, public educational system. Wake up!

No amount of "new technology" or 5-step strategies will undo the damage, except for a small handful.

Want change?

Pull the plug on K-12 public education!!

mario: Really?
“The republican party is non inclusive of people that are different. The day is over where that is acceptable. Face it, the kids don't want that anymore. Your time is up.”

Really? That’s quite a bromide. From my perspective as a minimally-franchised & thoroughly disposable white male all I see is a group of morally superior “International Socialists” (iNazis), e.g., Mr. Obama, Ms Clinton, et al, pandering to the same small tent containing a cloister of like-minded organisms: Marxist public school teachers, Marxist women-children, Marxist gays, Marxist minorities, Marxist poor people, Marxist uneducated people (an oxymoron if there ever was one), etc. Every one of them, just like you, fully ensconced in the “to each according to her needs” column of that great socialist equation. Where do these iNazi get their gravitas? Leftists seem to think that their particular ideology imbues them with an esoteric insight on all matters pertaining to the reality in general and the human condition in particular. If the rest of us were intelligent enough to appreciate the subtle beauty of social engineering (gender/racial quotas, wealth-redistribution, etc.) we would of course be morally-superior leftists as well. Hence, because we don't agree with the dominant leftist-paradigm we must be stupid or immoral. Jus because the campuses “thought police” i.e., Academia have cowed the majority of white males, et al into silence doesn’t mean you’ve changed their minds- the Democrat Party has been hemorrhaging white male membership for years. But thank you for attempting to enlighten me.

John: typical "open-minded" progressive
"The kind of conservatism spewed by Demosthenes here or the Limbaugh/Hannity clones on talk radio is based on division and enmity."

Actually I'm a Libertarian & try to dispense w/ the invalidation technique of characterizing me as just another "Limbaugh/Hannity clone" merely because I disagree w/ your "Progressive Establishment" viewpoints.

Tell, me do you have a degree w/ the work "SCIENCE" actually printed on it? have you read anything besides Chomsky, Friedan, Alinsky, Zinn, etc.? Ever spent any time at MIT? Do you have a real job where you actually are required to pay federal income taxes? Have you ever been responsible for the lives of anyone else besides your own sorry skin? Enquiring minds want to know?

John:1 Demosthenes: 0
John observes that college students appear to be unpersuaded by the typical combative style of the Hannityesque conservatives, so Demosthenes answers . . . in the typical combative style of hannityesque conservatives.

Get a clue conservatives: people are tired of arguing with you. People are looking for solutions to problems not Jerry Springer yelling matches.

Start offering solutions instead of complaints.

John: Really?
“College students know that the conservative attitude toward colleges is a fraud.”

Really? You like the “Duke Rape” fiasco couldn’t happen on other campuses? You think that the other misandry expressed didn’t strike a chord w/ most white male college students? Just because it is fashionable for white males to overtly hate themselves on most college campuses because the “thought police” doesn’t tolerate dissent doesn’t mean you’ve changed their minds. By the time they get real jobs where they realize they’re part of the majority of the top 50% of all income earners who pay 97% of all income taxes IOT finance a “welfare-industrial complex” that inordinately benefits women and hyphenated Americans they become more and more fiscally “conservative.”

Ever wonder why the Democrat party has been hemorrhaging White male membership? If you would bother to look at demographics, you might notice that the “Entitlement wing” of the Party of the “Majority of Income Tax Consumers” (i.e., the Democratic Party) consists of the usual suspects: so-called poor “legal” immigrants (80% of whom are unskilled, functionally illiterate 3rd world escapees), hyphenated-Americans & of course “why marry a man when you can marry the government” single women & mothers. This is in contrast w/ the “Majority of Income Tax Payers” Party (i.e., the Republican Party) which is inordinately white & male. How long do you think men in general and white males in particular are going to put up w/ this situation? It is only a matter of exposing college students to the socialist burdens (i.e., being penalized for being successful) they will be expected to assume in the future for the benefit of the "disadvantaged" victim groups in perpetuity.

Demosthenes
Wow, that was fun.

One reason it's easy to emply a dismissive tone with a pompous gas bag such as your self is that you are so easily dismissed. (See election results for 2006 and 2008, in whcih you were officially dismissed.)

The other reason it's easy to dismiss you is that you have apparently decided that you'd rather hear yourself talk than actually convince anyone of anything. A little core ego weakness I suspect. My sainted ma would have sggested to you that its better to light a candle than curse the darkness.

As to your questions? Yup, Got an S in my degree. Never read any of those folks. Never been to MIT. (Why? did you get thrown out?) Pay lots of taxes. And finally, I have been responsible for other folks since I was a kid.

Demosthenes yes REALLY!!!!!!
All you had to do was to watch the 2 conventions and you saw the difference. The Republican convention was a sea of white faces. Nothing wrong with that. The Democratic convention was a rainbow of various types of people. Which one seems more like the world that we live in? Maybe you did'nt see the youtube vidoes of the Mccain/Palin rallies where there were bigoted people making ridiculous remarks. Thats not the real world. And it is most definitely not the way that college campuses are.

tubbs: Really?
Tubbs:
Really? Given your moniker and your geographical area, as a minimally-educated hyphenated-American, you need to get a clue: individuals who don’t agree w/ the “progressive establishment” are tired of doing all of the heavy lifting while at the same time being invalidated by progressive pedantic intellects who can’t be bothered with debating facts, i.e., hyphenated-Americans who are afraid of losing their privileged existence in perpetuity. It’s like the liberal fascists who insist that Anthropogenic Global Warming is settled science and doesn’t merit further debate.

Additionally, an inordinate number of you seem to be living vicariously through a Fabian Socialist who you apparently think will undo the collective negative consequences of a lifetime of poor choices, irresponsible behavior & stupidity while ignoring the fact that today’s Hyphenated-American’s are victims of their our stupid behavior (i.e., 70% illegitimacy, 50% school drop out, 25% prison incarceration, etc.) more often than they are victims of a mythic “institutional racism.” Pretty pathetic.

Has your sense of institutionalized entitlement served you well? Given your inarticulate nature you must be extremely successful. Or is it more convenient to blame whitey in perpetuity for your personal set backs? How long have you been intimidated by uppidity white males who don’t agree with you?

I would entreat you to go back to school and obtain an education but I doubt that you have that much time left…

All good ideas
I'd add two more for conservatives no matter their age:
-- Never apologize.
-- Demand apologies from those on the left.

Demo: Yes. Really.
Everyone with whom I discussed the Duke case learned a great deal from it. In an interesting way, it makes my point.

The vast, vast majority of college students have experienced NOTHING like that. They are quite capable of realizing that while weird stuff can happen anywhere, one can't generalize from such a small sample to such a large body. Your insistence that the Duke case is representative of collegiate experience simply doesn't ring true to any but a few.

Now, I happen to agree with you in regard to the male-female dynamic. It is one area in which liberals have a nearly complete blind spot. That is why I have engaged many of them in productive discussions on the topic. This inlcudes pointing out to Democratic officials that a more rational apporoach would yield more votes from white males. Unlike you, I am interested in making a change instead of just listening to myself whine.

Why can't the GOP get young people?
Young people support gay rights.
Young people have no use for the coded race-baiting that characterizes the GOP, especially its Southern variety.
Young people have lived much of their life under an incompetent Republican administration--they have no memory of Carter, only of Bush II.
Young people recognize we live in an interconnected and globalizing world, and so have little use for the GOP's framing of "small town" values.
The GOP isn't cool. Obama is.

Reaching out to the student newspaper won't cut it when the dogs don't like the dog food.

States, Alumni, & Young Skulls o' Mush
There is no excuse for state-supported schools in conservative states to be hotbeds of leftist radicalism, sinecures for unqualified leftist radical faculty, forced support of leftist causes, & persecution of nonleftists. If college presidents & boards of trustees got grilled by legislatures about this kind of thing on their campii when appropriations time rolled around, they might be less inclined to look the other way when such things happen.

Furthermore, they could protect the rights of their students by law. So, what about it, guys? Doesn't anyone see possibilities in conservative-friendly state uni's as opposed to pandering to leftist radical faculty?

Also, there are the alumni. If begging letters started garnering, instead of fat check$, letters expressing concern about the school's "speech code," discrimination against conservative viewpoints, tolerance of leftist hecklers-vetoes against conservative speakers, & so on, somebody might start waking up.

Young people just out of hi school come from a life experience of being protected & having their needs taken care of. That's why socialism is so appealing & natural to them; the guvamint just steps into loco parentis. Aside from the ex-GI's & other mature students, the task is not impossible, esp in the practical fields like science, business, & engineering. After all, they should expect to work & to be compensated for producing.

young
Conservatives won't be able to capture the youth while they are still against women's rights and gay rights.

Today's youth have grown up in a multi-cultural, global, technological world. The GOP prides itself on being against diversity.

Demosthenes
What you and others like you don't understand is Conservatism. Conservatism is a summary of a single value system, which reflects those values harbored by the majority population. Today,America no longer has a majority. Most of the 20th century Conservatism was used to house and dispense "White Values". Sadly,if these values are mixed with other values, they become diluted. Yes we need strong values but they cannot be predicated on moral turpitudes. If the Republican party had not chosen"Divide and Conquer" as it's theme, things might have gone differently. A true "Politician" has but one requirement; BE RELEVANT!! No one in the Conservative movement has a watch and time is important.

Don't Tread
Interestign nickname in this context.

Every state has it's own higher ed structure and its own relationship between legisltaures and high ed. Trying what you describe would be completely ineffective in most states and counterproductive in the long run.

For one thing, if conservative legislators did succeed in swaying university culture in their direction, nothing would stop the next legislature from swaying it back. The entire operation would suffer.

For another, whcih states are you talkign about. Mississippi, Alabama and Alaska? real education hotbeds there.

silly season for Demosthenes
Don't get testy with me because John made you look foolish.

Whatever slurs you'd like to throw at me don't change the fact taht the GOP is on the verge of extinction because simple minded anger freaks such as yourself would rather argue for the sake of arguing than address the country's problems.

And by the way, I graduated from a top ten undergrad in 1996, worked as an analyst for a Presidential commission for three years after that, then attended and graduated from a top ten law school, then worked for the DOJ for about four years, now I work for a consulting firm and I'm happy (and comfortable). My tax money pays for the welfare that you likely live off.

Hope that doesn't shake up your numerous misconceptions about Black people too much.

Students of today
do not know the structure and history of our country. Therefore, they are imbued by America hating professors with a lack of reverance for this country and what is possible here in contrast to the rest of the world. Also, they believe in government doing what they should do for themselves. Hopefully, later when they have become employees and spouses and parents, they will change their views.

The GOP...
is, because of its fundamentals, never going to win the youth vote. Young people are more idealistic, and fault all the old folks for not already being energy independent, not making the connection between environment and human health, and as someone stated earlier, they don't remember Carter, but it will be hard for them to forget Bush. Reacting to or thinking about situations which may happen 10 years down the line (See GOP and technology: or Reagan and Energy Independence) is not the GOP's strong suit.
From recent conservative presidents, the youth will think the GOP will talk about small govt and fiscal responsibility, but will start wars, give extravagant tax cuts, borrow all necessary funding, and then complain when they have to be taxed and pay the piper.

Add an Item #6 to all of this
6. Let college students know there is a real world that they must enter into after graduation and little, if any, of what they saw in academia will have any realistic place in life outside of academia.

In the real world, people must work to pay bills and if there are no jobs available and too much money is being confiscated through taxes, there will be very little work and paying those bills becomes that much harder. Relying on the government to bail you out only mortages more of our children's and grandchildren's future. That's reality. That's what we need to be teaching.

most universities get funding by the gov
so the more taxes that go towards funding of their school the more money and stuff teachers would get. Also, a lot of these teachers who are full time professors are disconnected from the real world and can only rely on educated guesses about the working class. All they have are their untested ideals. In my 4 years of college there where professionals who come in for certain courses or lectures and full time professors who preach theory out of a book. Both had an opposite version of reality.

Gotta love the NRCC tech team
NRCC headline today....

"Thanks to Republican economic policies, the U.S. economy is robust and job creation is strong."

You make it so easy for us liberals. Thanks!

Conspiracy
It amazes me how people think that colleges somehow brainwash kids into believeing this or that. I am a college graduate, and I never had a professor or anyone espouse liberal or conservative viewpoints with regard to anything. They were there to teach english, economics, political science ect... and not to espouse their personal beliefs. I just find it ridiculoius that conservatives are complaining about colleges being the reason that they lost the election. You lost the election because your ideas are old, stale and negative, and the only people that believe that stuf are old, stale and negative. Its as if the world has moved into the 21st century and you guys are stuck in 1980 with Ronald Reagan.

GOP and Conservatives
Social Conservatives are anti-unions, anti-poor, anti-gay, anti-Latino, anti-African American, anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-women, and anti-science.

The Social Conservatives are defined by being against everything that doesn't favor rich white straight male Christians.

That is their problem. They hate diversity and free thought.

GOP and Conservatives
Reply to Michael in KY,

I think you need to expand your horizons as far
as the GOP and Conservatives are concerned. I am a social conservative, a woman, middle class and my husband is a union member. My two oldest children are in the science (medical)field, one in medical school and the other physical therapy. It sounds like you to need to start thinking for yourself, rather than following some websites talking points, and get that giant chip off your shoulder.
Or, wait and maybe the government will send
someone to do it for you!

last line
Conservative success rests on ideas - not slogans. Obviously ideas don't matter in our society anymore, slogans won the election.

Michael is wrong
Social conservatives are against union activity that gets above-market wages for its members. Such wages will not hold in a competitive market and will deny jobs to others.
Against the poor? They oppose marginalizing fatherhood that creates single-mother families where children are denied a real father and financial support. They hope that the poor will take advantage of free education to improve their lot. I have seen this success time and time again.
Anti-gay? How about anti-gay behavior that is very unhealthful?
Anti-women? Just the opposite. I could write a book on this one. I will tell you this--when I was having my two children in the 1970's, no mother-to-be ever called her unborn child a fetus. It was always "a baby." Fetus was adopted to de-humanize the baby so that it could be killed. Murder of the helpless & innocent is evil. The unborn baby is a separate human being deserving of life. Anti-other people. Ridiculous. Science? Yes, I oppose politicized science. I don't agree that human's cause global warming. Environmentalism has gone too far and has become an ideology.

It's too bad Michael is so bitter. Such emotion is unnecessary, because none of what he believes is true.

Coillege conservatives need to join up
This column needs a more political focus. College conservatives need to connect with the larger right-wing voting base--conservative Christians--and join them in opposing the Obama administration in all things. If conservatives, wherever they may be, truly want to gain power, they will organize to drive Obama from office.

College conservatives should be on the front lines in the battle against Obama. Consider what conservatives said about Obama during the campaign: anti-American, covert Mulsim, Marxist, gay-lover, anti-life, pro-terrorist, etc. etc. If Obama is what conservatives say he is, then the times require organization and action. Colleges should be hotbeds of young conservative activism, supporting efforts to unseat Obama in every possible way. College conservatives need to be clear about drawing boundaries around what is acceptable to them. There can be no tolerance of gays, pro-choice believers, liberals of any sort, and more. College conservative groups neeed to take very seriously their role in bringing about resistance to and defiance of the Obama administration. A good place to start is to get mean and dirty with your fellow students who are liberals. Dig up or invent scandals to embarass liberal faculty members. Contact those marginalized groups on the very far right; they have the energy and know-how to teach college students how to be successful right-wing activists.

Above all, college conservatives should reject the politics of civility. "Civility" only benefits the liberals against whom you fight. Don't buy into their deceptions.

Miss Agness
Everything that you said makes perfect sense. Itis just so sad that it has to be this way.

Dear Mr. Gestell
I doubt that college conservatives will adopt the liberal playbook that you so aptly describe.

Many other observations here are relevant. Many young university students have left home for the first time and are idealistic. The demographics of the university population has, however, changed from 30 years ago. The average age of students has risen, due to the "non-traditional" student group. These are people who have been in the market place, and have gone back to "re-tool." That population in particular, from my experience, is much more conservative. They do not, however, have as much time for flag waving and rallies, but they usually blow away younger students in focus and critical thinking. In fact, "freshman essay competitions" have had to change rules to include age restrictions. Older "freshmen" have life experience and bring much more to the table than the normal wide-eyed idealism of eighteen year olds.
So, conservative ideas resonate best with people who have something to conserve. Young people generally do not have anything to conserve at all.
So, college conservatives are often sowing seeds that will germinate when the individual has more depth of soil.

What are conservatives conserving?
And what are liberals liberating? I don't get it. There's no more of a difference between conservatives and liberals than between fans of opposing baseball teams as far as I can see. It's just 'them' and 'us' nothing more.

Liberals and conservatives both oppose abortion. The only difference is that one group wants more legal restrictions and the other wants it to remain a family matter.

Liberals and conservatives both want smaller government and lower taxes but both, paradoxically, want greater government spending, one group for national security and the other for poverty mitigation.

The list of basic similarities between the two camps, albeit with subtle, almost miniscule, differences, is so long that it is hard to undersand how we've managed to achieve such massive political polarization.

cogent recent post by Linda

re:
"Most of the young people I know are less-government and fiscal conservatives but more middle of the road on social issues. They don't agree with abortion, but they don't want to outlaw abortions either. They don't support gay marriage, but they don't think gays should be vilified. They believe in God, but they want a reasonable separation of church and state. If the RNC will get back to fiscal responsibility and reduce some of the high-stakes social rhetoric, these young people could be relied on to support Republican candidates."

A splendid summary, here... those who are pro-life have a right to their viewpoint, but it loses to a clear majority.

People miss an important point about this election-- it was more a repudiation of neoCONism (a profligate war of CHOICE), unbridled spending and govt. growth, and especially a failed economy than an embracing of the ObaMessiah. He signed up new voters, BUT the total vote was DOWN from 2004 because many true conservatives stayed home.

America remains closely divided on what it wants government to attempt to do, with much overlap. The summary above would seem to relate to a clear majority, however, and not just of young people.

It's also about branding
Pinto Man was halfway right—except he forgot branding. For the first time in campaign history we had a logo that could be plastered everywhere to go along with the slogans. It is no different than than the neon orange Tide detergent box or the current Apple vs PC ads. Get your audience to glom onto a brand that they think is hip and pound your message home. There was NOTHING interesting about McCain other than Sarah Palin. And look how quickly and vehemently the experts of branding—the MSM and big advertisers that own and support them—attacked her. They CONTINUE to attack her. She is a truly NEW brand that could've toppled the newish Obama brand and they (the MSM) knew it.

As they say in the corridors of every large advertising agency, "Fresh is best". Hopefully, the Republicans can hire the best in all phases of branding and marketing and "Sell" better in the future. Why?

Because there is a sucker born every minute....
