Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

If a newly hired employee led his organization to a 20-year low in profits, Donald Trump’s famous phrase, “You’re Fired,” would most certainly be invoked. Well, for most people. Apparently, this general rule doesn’t apply to women because the public is actually to blame.

In June, Katie Couric brought the ratings for the CBS Evening News to a 20-year low. Rather than taking responsibility for the low ratings, CBS has decided to rely on an old favorite feminist argument—blame female failures on sexism.

There are many possible reasons to explain Couric’s failure, but CBS has chosen to reject many complicated arguments for simple sexism.

First, there is an argument to be made that people are turning more and more to the internet for their news. (This does not turn Couric’s failure into a success because she is still in last place standing behind ABC and NBC.) But this can be partially relied upon to explain the low numbers.

Second, viewers have permanently left CBS because of Rathergate and the station’s leftwing bias.

Third, Couric herself is not cut out for an evening news program. Couric was successful on a morning television program, but the evening news and morning news are like day and night. Success in one arena does not automatically translate into success in another arena. Would Matt Lauer, Al Roker or Regis Philbin be taken seriously as an evening newscaster? No. They are better fit for the morning shows.

Fourth, Couric is a victim of blatant sexism. Which argument did CBS choose? CBS picked the last argument. Leslie Moonves, CBS chief executive, said Tuesday, “I’m sort of surprised by the vitriol against her. The number of people who don’t want news from a woman was startling.” Not surprising, CBS does not blame Couric’s failure on different viewer habits or Couric herself, but instead attributes her failure to institutional societal sexism.

But this is only one side of the coin. The other side is that Couric has benefited more than anyone because of her gender. CBS specifically made Couric’s gender an issue and sought Couric in part because she is a woman, which it thought would draw in more female viewers and in turn, help the program. While CBS will be unlikely to admit that Couric would not have the job if she was not a woman in the first place, this is a fair assumption. CBS implicitly acknowledges this. The Financial Times reported on Tuesday that CBS was hoping to draw younger, female viewers and that Couric has received a 2 percent increase in women age 18 to 49.

Furthermore, CBS spent huge sums of money conducting a large-scale public relations campaign to sell the public on Couric. Why? CBS hoped that a female anchor could push CBS to the front of the pack. There are always risks involved in switching news anchors and the structure of the program. The extensive public relations campaign CBS conducted shows that CBS was aware of these risks. CBS should recognize that the program failed and change something—the format, the anchor or the type of news it covers.

Instead, CBS has adopted the typical radical feminist attitude that has been so destructive on our culture: They get put in the game without the proper qualifications and then claim victim status when they cannot compete. Feminists take advantage of their gender to get ahead and then cry sexism when they are no longer propped up, try to play the game and fail miserably.

Unfortunately, this is the attitude that dominates college campuses today. For example, the Equal Rights Amendment is still a highly discussed and supported topic among female professors, especially those in women’s studies departments. They claim it will equalize men and women before the law. Realistically, these women want to pick and chose when their gender will be a factor. For example, they want women to have the same access to promotions within the military. Yet, when asked if they support drafting women into the military, they resounding reply “no.”

If women want the same opportunity to succeed, we should have the same opportunity to fail.

Couric more than benefited from her gender by getting the CBS news anchor job and CBS gave it to her expecting to benefit as well. CBS shouldn’t expect to receive bonus points on the Nielsen’s ratings just because it hired a female anchor. Rather than claim sexism, CBS should take responsibility for the failure of the CBS Evening News.

I meant right on!!!!
Sorry

drolmorg
right one with the Rather comment! For once I agreed with him :~)

The real reason behind this decision
I believe CBS wanted its morning show to succeed and bought Katie expressly for that purpose - to shoot down their competition. I never watch Today or the CBS morning show, but I think I've read that the CBS one has done better since she left NBC. That ought to really make Ms. KC feel great! What a loser!

Watched her only once
and that was when Rush had his time to express his views...immediately switched channels when he was done and have never turned back.

In fact, we watch the local CBS news but at 6:29, the tv goes off! I turn away when she is shown on a commercial during the local news. By the way, has anyone else noticed that they are no longer using her voice as a come-on for the national news, just shows her sitting there looking "perky" Makes me want to upchuck!

What does the sex of the feeder matter
when the dog doesn't like the look, smell and taste of what it is being fed?

CBS
Network news and newspapers are doomed. It is simply a matter of time. But the saga of the CBS news, in particular, is rooted in the Rather SNAFU and its own bias. However, the real impetus sparked by the forgery was the attention it brought online and on talk radio, to the reality of Cronkite's culpability in the loss of the VietNam war. From his assessment of the TET as a loss to the hammering of public opinion into blaming every aspect of the war on Nixon and republican policy, ( which had little to nothing to do with it ), Walter drove the public disdain, led the other networks down the path, and probably caused as many KIAs in Nam as we've seen all told in the GWOT, including the WTC

I'll never forget my brother telling us all it was like having our Grandfather tell him the news every evening, ( arguing against our long-standing Huntley & Brinkley Report tradition on a visit home from Northwestern ) I personally have much greater respect for my Grandfather than I felt that conveyed.

Rather's demise was a great opportunity for Rush et al to remind us of the historically accurate version of CBS, and they educated millions of us!

Katy Couric
I watched Katy the other night, for the heck of it, and she is boring. It is my own reaction to her. I don't watch much TV anymore, but I remember when Connie Chung was an anchor.

Connie had presence and something in her eye that spoke of intelligence and passion for her job. Couric simply doesn't have it, that I can see. Perky and attractive in some ways, but I cannot make out a serious intellect, especially given some of her absurd poltical comments. They defy much understanding of the issue(s) she was commenting on. Very much according to the liberal playbook, but not thoughtful, more learned as rote. A talking head. Making a huge salary, easily above market for the job and discriminatory to her favor.

The impact of Rather and some 20/20 exploits also has poisoned the well. CBS needs to clean house and stop blaming viewers for its problems.

60 %
Uh, that's in reference to Pirate's post entitled "look at the different physical standards", above.

60 %
Totally off subject, but I though the coincidence interesting:

Didn't the constitution originally count slaves as 3/5 of a person for census purposes? So does the military think a female is 3/5 of a soldier for recruiting purposes? Or am I reading too much into the coincidence? (Note: these are sarcastic, rhetorical questions, not intended for serious consideration).

JG sums it up
Exactly as JG says. This is all about executives trying to save their jobs.

Moonves
I doubt Moonves really cares all that much about Katy or sexism; he probably had a stake in the project in some way, so if it fails, it's his tail on the line. He's doing what he does best, pointing fingers at someone else, anyone else.

Kind of disgusting that a lot of executives are in that position because of their ability to take credit for success and shift blame for failure to others, muddle the situation if necessary or blame it on external factors (like the unwarranted sexism of the American public).

Can't CBS find any competent people?

CBS
Who is CBS?

BuckBean

Excellent analysis (your 9:29 a.m. post). I hadn't thought about the targeted audience angle.

Still, CBS can't relish being DEAD LAST in ratings and falling. I sense some real desperation in Moonves' statement.

Sigh
No clue why that posted twice.

... has an interesting point. Getting to act like a "Princess of Generation TXT-MSG" isn't the same thing as being "hot." This is particularly so when the Princess has a little age on her around the edges.

Katie is a Princess. Princesses are those gals women like to moon over and fantasize about being, because they're perky and/or dramatic and/or lovably quirky in the limelight. Men, on the whole, take little interest in Princesses, thinking reflexively when they see one: "High maintenance."

Credible women, who can hold their own in the world of hard news, politics, or leadership, have to not be Princesses. Princesshood is incompatible with credibility. A Princess, by definition, is someone's kid, at best a junior actor on the world stage even if there is a literal "Principality" in question. The function of a Princess is to exemplify qualities, not know boring facts or make grim decisions.

For all her liberalism, someone like Christiane Amanpour is an Anti-Princess, which is why she has credibility. Margaret Thatcher and Condoleezza Rice have credibility. Frankly, not all the blonds on Fox have credibility with me, but some do -- because they don't look like they're playing to an audience of girlfriends, or like any minute now they're going to do an adorable pratfall in public and giggle about themselves.

Katie Couric does look that way. She's a Lifetime Original Princess, Living the Dream. The thing CBS doesn't seem to understand is that women, the natural audience of Princesses, don't watch Princesses for the purpose of hearing the news. It's not a viable fit and never will be.

-
I tried to follow Moonves' instructions - I always try to do what self-centered TV executives say, especially when they accuse me of sexism - but it was just too painful. I tried, Les Moonves, but her dullness behind those eyes and her meanness behind that award-winning, pasted-on chearleader smile made it impossible.

I'll try again next week, Les, because I certainly don't want to be sexist.

Who cares??
If you ask me, CBS is irrelevant, no matter how hard they try to tell America that they are...even if they have to cook a few stories to get noticed.

Actual cause of CBS' failure
Their logo is taken to be a command to the viewer--"See B.S."! Quite simply, they forgot that the viewers DO NOT like a steady stream of trash.

Truth in labeling.
The person who posted the comment about teleprompters was right. I don't have overwhelming enthusiasm for the British, but the do have the intelligence to call the people who read the "news" stories on television, "News Readers," which is what they are.
We call some of them "anchors." "Anchor," "A heavy object attached to a vessel by a cable or rope and cast overboard to keep the vessel in place either by its weight or by its flukes, which grip the bottom." Maybe they are.

>Ever notice how the Fox Blonds...
...Ain't Dumb?

And, let's face it, they're HOT. Most of them. Katie Couric is MSM's idea of hot. She's not, she's perky, she's chipmunkish, but definitely not hot. The same people who think she's hot think Princess Diana was hot. And I don't know a single male who thought that.

Sweet Little Katie...
Barbara Walters played in the "BIG Leagues" while you were still in elementary school. I know, we are not that different in age.

Katie you were a "cute" kid starting out and the biggest prize in your life was making the "Today" show. Why in heavens did you do this job, one you ARE NOT qualified to perform? Did you think with "good writers" I can do it?

Now, I have a fondness for supporting other women to have equal chances -- to pass or fail, not to be held to "different performance standards."

Other women HAVE sat in the CBS anchor chair, many have not succeeded. You have to be a "journalist" or "reporter" FIRST, and after many years "pundit" can be added.

You need to lead, not follow, and definitely NOT “tag-along”. I know you had exposure to "leadership" in Girl Scouts, I did too. But you have to step up, lay down an ethical standard and follow it. Katie, you didn't and you don't and you just "don't get it" do you?

It has gotten so bad, I cannot watch it. Like many an old corny sitcom that showed an incident too dumb for words, I can not watch the unfolding of events. It is a train wreck in slow motion.

CBS made a HUGE mistake with your hiring, like Connie Chung’s before you, and Connie had years of journalist and reporter experience behind her in a very LARGE media market, Diane Sawyer with whom you were often compared is another “News person” that made a successful transition to morning programming, and her partner Charles (Charlie) Gibson, as well. They were “reporters” long before being celebrities.

Katie, you’re a celebrity trying to be a reporter and it is not working.

BOTTOM LINE.....
Networks suckle at the teats of advertisers. Advertisers tell them that the number one shopping group is female 18 - 49. Any block of network time that can show a high percentage of viewers from this group will bring in good revenue from willing advertisers. The nightly news has always been a struggle for the networks. Obviously CBS decided to damn the overall ratings and shoot for a higher percentage of this target group. Couric increased that audience by 2% for CBS, but they don't tell us how their female 18-49 viewership ranks among the other networks. It's possible they could still be getting prime ad dollars regardless of overall ratings. And CBS has nothing to lose by crying "sexism". So they offend some guys - big deal! Such a statement might get them more female viewers who relish that victim status.

Fox women aren't just babes...
> Justa Thought Here writes: Why are so many
> women on FOX? And seemingly making it?????

Ever notice how the Fox Blonds Ain't Dumb?

I don't watch the evening news ...
and I don't have cable TV. I read the local liberal rag with a jaundiced eye knowing that they have their own agenda. All bias comes through in reporting, even when reporting on local crimes. The words people use automatically ascribe position. There is no such thing as unbiased reporting. If they try to tell you they are unbiased, they're lying to you. Go somewhere else for information.

it's television

does anyone really believe you couldn't get a ton of people twice as talented who would take one thousandth as much money--to read a teleprompter?

this kerfuffle is all about super-egos and their "special" problems. they don't call TV the idiot box for nothing.

Why are so many women on FOX?
And seemingly making it?????

Institutionalized bias??? I don't think so.

We just expect the truth.

Couric and both sides of the coin
Katie Couric has always wanted the best of both worlds, and the media went along with it.
Witness her long-ago confrontation with Bob Dole, when he accused of carrying water for one side. She wanted to be considered "hard news" and able to ask the "tough questions" but when Dole didn't flinch, and came back at her, the outcry was "how could he be so mean to sweet littld Katie?????"
You wanna play with the big boys, Katie, be prepared to take a lump.

Katie Couric on CBS Evening News
I do not like Katie Couric. I never liked Katie Couric. I didn't watch her on the Today Show. I watch cable TV news, mostly Fox News Channel with a bit of MSNBC and CNN as well. I always thought Katie was too perky. And, quite unattractive, no matter how much money she spends on new hairdos and clothing. I was shocked the way she interviewed the Edwards family about Elizabeth's breast/bone cancer. I am not a fan of John Edwards (except he is good looking). I always vote Republican, Conservative, or Right to Life tickets.

Other Factors
Could it be that another factor in Katie's decline is her infamous usage of what turned out to be plagiarized material, for recounting her fond memories of obtaining her first library card? That only brought more focus on the fact that she wasn't even the source for original material for her 'personal' commentary. What a fraud!

CBS Ratings - CBS Mission ?

Excellent Article

At age 68 I have learned some things just do not work, no matter how hard you try. CBS attempted to force the public to accept their model, and it might have worked if Couric had been able to evaluate, understand, and capsulize important news issues, after all it is a news program. She was not capable. I wathced the first show, including her interview of the President to "see if she had it". She did not! Since then I have waited for the other shoe to drop. I think its free falling now.

Agness has it right, "they get in the game without qualifications"! Agness will do well in the society I love, she will become qualified and play the game well for whatever she chooses in the future.

Liberals Are Watching American Idol
Katie Couric and CBS News have dug themselves into the same hole as my hometown newspaper, the San Jose Mercury News.
Both "news" organizations are liberal and wrongly think that they can capitalize on that liberalism by appealing to a decidedly leftist demographic.
What they fail to take into account is that most liberals, in the case of the Mercury News, don't read newspapers at all, or for CBS, when it comes to TV, don't have the attention span to endure an hour of serious news and would prefer to watch the "daily show".
Liberals, for the most part, are only liberal because they simply want Government to give them something. That's it. They are not serious thinkers and students of current events. THOSE people are called conservatives, and most conservatives are appalled by the socialist spin that CBS specializes in.
But yeah CBS, go ahead and call me a "sexist" because I don't watch Katie Couric, just as the Mercury News calls me a "bigot" for being opposed to illegal immigration.

look at the different physical standards

Take, for example, the US Army standards for men and women.

A male has to do 71 pushups to score 100%, while a female only 42 -- and a man only doing that would get a score of 60%.

A man has to run 2 miles in 13 minutes to get 100% while a woman only 15:36, for which the man would also get 60%

Hence a female soldier is only 3/5 of a male soldier... See:
http://www.usarec.army.mil/hq/apa/rc/apft.htm

The same thing is true (sometimes more extreme) in local police and firefighter jobs. And why the women who *can* do these jobs aren't upset about this is beyond me.

And the winner is
"Second, viewers have permanently left CBS because of Rathergate and the station’s leftwing bias."

Number 2. Walter Cronkite would have fallen right on his butt if he had to follow the same mess. Wrong place at the wrong time.
