Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Senator John McCain has devoted his entire adult life to the service of our country. He served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years; he spent five-and-a-half of those years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. Later he served as the commander of the largest aviation attack squadron in the U.S. Navy. On the political front, John McCain has served over 20 years in the United States Senate, leading American policy on national security and military issues as chairman of the Armed Services Committee. He has been involved in every major foreign policy decision over the past two decades. In short, he has the experience, judgment, and character to lead our country as Commander in Chief from the very first moment he steps into the Oval Office.

Senator McCain's qualifications as a military and foreign policy expert far surpass the credentials of anyone else seeking the most powerful office on the planet.

John McCain's expertise on these important issues is what Americans want in a Commander in Chief. He has continued to run a positive and honest campaign, sharing his qualifications - for which his service is an important tenet - with the American people.

That is why as a retired military officer, I find the attacks and distortions against his record to be so disturbing. It is now clear that Democrats, including the Democratic National Committee and Senator Obama intend to misrepresent Senator McCain's words and stances rather than have an honest and substantive dialogue on the issues that matter.

By suggesting that John McCain is a "blatant opportunist" for discussing his military record with the American people and in the same breath uttering that McCain is "promising to keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years," Howard Dean is demeaning the chairmanship of the Democratic Party and should apologize not only to Senator McCain, but also Democrat voters.

Just last week, two nonpartisan fact-checking organizations called the insinuation that McCain wants to fight the war for another 100 years "false," a "serious distortion," and "rank falsehood."

What makes the Democrats' attacks even worse is that Barack Obama refuses to acknowledge the intentionally false and dishonest attacks he has launched against Senator McCain.

At a press conference on Monday, Obama finally acknowledged that the 100 years Senator McCain spoke of was referring to a peacetime troop presence in Iraq. Yet, as Obama consistently has done in the past, he continued Monday to distort Senator McCain's position irrespective of the truth or facts.

It's hard to fathom why Obama would consistently mislead voters with his rhetoric, unless of course his claim to represent new politics is nothing more than a tagline and a completely fictitious claim. On a number of occasions over the past few months Obama has used the "100 years" comment to unfairly attack Senator McCain. On Feb. 19, Obama said, "[Sen. McCain] says that he is willing to send our troops into another 100 years of war." And just a week later he repeated that untrue statement by saying, "[W]e are bogged down in a war that John McCain now suggests might go one for another 100 years."

These comments exemplify the same-old, dirty gutter politics Obama claims to oppose. If Obama wanted to run a clean campaign, he would be best served denouncing Dean's statements and ceasing to mischaracterize Senator McCain's record.

The Democrats' attempts to paint McCain as someone who wants continue the war in Iraq indefinitely is completely at odds with the truth. Just days ago, while speaking to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, Senator McCain stated, "In Vietnam, where I formed the closest friendships of my life, some of those friends never came home to the country they loved so well. I detest war. It might not be the worst thing to befall human beings, but it is wretched beyond all description. When nations seek to resolve their differences by force of arms, a million tragedies ensue. The lives of a nation's finest patriots are sacrificed. Innocent people suffer and die. Commerce is disrupted; economies are damaged; strategic interests shielded by years of patient statecraft are endangered as the exigencies of war and diplomacy conflict. Not the valor with which it is fought nor the nobility of the cause it serves, can glorify war. Whatever gains are secured, it is loss the veteran remembers most keenly. Only a fool or a fraud sentimentalizes the merciless reality of war. However heady the appeal of a call to arms, however just the cause, we should still shed a tear for all that is lost when war claims its wages from us."

Senator McCain is a veteran who empathizes with and appreciates the massive sacrifices our men and women in uniform have made. He also is a man with many decades of experience in the military and the United States Senate, overseeing the major foreign relations and military issues of our day. McCain is dedicated to victory in the War on Terror through stabilizing the Iraqi government and beating the terrorists as opposed to surrendering to them as both Senators Obama and Clinton have proposed.

Senator McCain will use his experience, judgment and optimism to lead us to victory in this war against radical Islamic extremism, and no amount of pandering and smear tactics by the Democrats will confuse or distract the American people from the significance of achieving that mission. I know who I want answering the White House phone at 3:00 AM in the morning, it's a battle tested veteran named John McCain.

Welcome to the real world.
" It is now clear that Democrats, including the Democratic National Committee and Senator Obama intend to misrepresent Senator McCain's words and stances rather than have an honest and substantive dialogue on the issues that matter."

Let's rewrite that sentence:

" It is now clear that Republicans, including the Republican National Committee and right wing media intend to misrepresent Reverend Wrights's words and stances rather than have an honest and substantive dialogue on the issues that matter."

Works on both sides. Welcome to the real world.

The right wing plays snippets of the most repugnant parts of Wright's speeches ad nauseum. They are not interested in having a dialog about race.

Mudslinging is a fact of life in politics, dating back to George Washington.

Welcome to the real world.

Post Holer: What a crock
I am NOT a McCain supporter, but your comparison is absolute hogwash. Criticism of Rev. Wright is based on WHAT HE ACTUALLY SAID. The supposedly parallel criticism of McCain is based on WHAT HE DIDN'T SAY. In other words, it was based on a "rank falsehood," a.k.a., a lie.

It is interesting, but completely unsurprising, that libs cannot tell the difference between a criticism based on truth and a criticism based on lies. That is because for many libs, everything is politics, and questions of truth and falsehood are unimportant -- only winning matters.

Look, there are many legitimate criticisms to be made of McCain based on his actual words and actions. You don't have to resort to lies -- unless you're a lib, I guess.

IL State Senator for 6 years
US Senator for 3 years.

Is their anything to discuss?

MDoggg
You are right there with Clinton and Obama in the surrender camp. You haven't the brains or the guts to defend this country nor do you have the brains or guts to bring needed stability in the a part of the world that for decades has needed it.

Please leave the fighting for peace to the real men and woman. We don't need sissies like you trying to "protect" us.

100 years in IRAQ
Newsflash: The Sadrists are poised to win the provincial elections in the south, effectively giving them control of Iraq'a oil wealth.

No matter how McCain slices or dices it, he will be associated with a 100 year commitment to one of the biggests strategic failures in history.

Colonel Repya
A person that "HATES" war does not make casual comments in that regard. Please understand that you are not talking to 20 years olds who have their views "Untainted".Also,a person, who comes to "VISIT" does not build a billion dollar house.I don't remember any Iraq inviting "US" to stay.Furthermore, your article while commendable, and somewhat expected, does not speak of the "SURGE".This once heralded feat, has now been relegated to a persona -non-gratis status.WHY?The mis-speak regarding the "Hundred Years War" has caused Iraq to erupt once more.Mr.McCain's fingerprints are on this major mistake.Truth is no "Respector" of person.Nor am I...

Thinking Americans
Obama and Clinton don’t know the difference between a Sergeant and a Major let alone a Sergeant Major. They have no idea what elements make up our Military Force, where it is deployed other than the few that are actually in the ME. And they have no idea what its history is and worse than anything what its capabilities are. They despise the military and will go to work to leave us defenseless. They care nothing about the security and safety of my family or yours. Their incompetence in this area is more than scary and should be left vote less by thinking Americans for this reason only.

MDoggg-example of stupidity
MDoggg:
If you're sitting with 8000 other "Americans" who jump and hoot and agree with a black bigot when he sits there and says "Goddamn America" and states blacks who commit violent crime agaist other blacks are picking on the wrong race, well, yes, I'd call that racist and relevant. As far as I know if there is "white oppression" these days it is represebnted by far fewer incidents than the daily we hear about coeds (white) being killed/raped by thugs (black). I mean, with all the federally forced entitlement programs throwing countless trillions at thge "oppressed" since th4e 1960 and what do whited get in return? To be accused (government = the man = white folk) of infecting blacks with AIDS. Forget about the fact tht it is the irresposibility/promiscuity/IV drug use in the black community causing the spread of HIV. But I guess it's much easier to blame "rednecks" for all of life's troubles. Hell, even barack does it ("grandma got runover by obama", now singalong everyone). And if you're agreeing with wright, not only are you an ingrate for biting the hand that feeds you but also a dangerous idiot; I'm sick of the socialist programs taking my hard earned money and giving it to slugs who only do one thing efficiently: have (out of wedlock) babies(I actually studied in H.S and college unlike the recipients of most entiltlements that hung out, did drugs, ad blamed whitey for everything). And finally, this is why I hate liberal democrats. Undeer the guise of up[lifting less fortunate people they perptuate this cynical dependency cycle to keep those, so chaned, voting for them. Or are you too stupid to see that, "MDoggg"?

MDoggg-example of stupidity
Excuse the spelling errors but I didn't think you'd notice, "MDoggg"!

Service?
Wjhenever anyone claims that being a politician is service to our country, I want to puke. Yes, Mccain served in the military, but his political occupation is not "service to his country." My mother, God rest her soul, who was in politics always said,"never vote for anyone who has spent their entire adult life in government." She was so right.

As for McCains military service, I applaud it even though he would not have even been accepted to the naval academy if his daddy and grandfather were not admirals. But, how does that make him better suited to be president? And his votes in the senate carried no responsibility. He voted for the war and then spent years bashing the president, the defense secretary and numerous generals. Only with the surge has he taken a stand. Again I ask, how does making a speech on the senate floor and voting make anyone a better Commander in Chief? Ronald Reagan did not have military experience. Abe Lincoln had no military experience. It is judgement and integrity that is needed to be Commander in Chief. None of the remaining candidates have these traits.

The Bryce is wrong
bryce:
Oh, I see your back. I need to sit down and listen to ridiculous mainline liberal propaganda...

100 years
As to the 100 years comment, I agree that it was taken out of context, but McCain needs to be a little less strident about war. I have spoken with many, many republicans who think he is a war monger.

He has already made statements about the Soviet Union and Iran that were ill advised. A President must choose his words wisely, realizing that the world is listening. McCains trip to the middle east showed that he is not ready to stand on the world stage. His misstatements and pronouncements showed a lack of knowledge and preparedness.

Are Obama or Hilary better? No, but that doesn't mean we should overlook McCains shortcomings in foreign affairs.

McCain's Hundred Years
McCain will not be beaten up over the 100 years remark during the general election campaign, he's made so many other mistakes the Democrats won't care about this one. He confused AQ and Shi'a Iran at least three times before Lieberman (R-CT) corrected him? Two weeks ago he told CNN that "His [Sadr’s] influence has been on the wane for a long time." Yesterday, he told CNN his view of al Sadr: "I said he was still major player and his influence is going to have to be reduced and gradually eliminated."
Most everyone likes and admires John, but as President?

Boomer
Lincoln was in the militia and Reagan was in the US Cavalry---I even have the film to prove it. Now… you may think that’s silly but the point is that in BOTH cases it’s a thousand times more military experience than either Obama or Anita Broderick’s rapist’s wife. Anymore examples?

Oh, brother...
Yet another McCain apologist.

Who said we should occupy Iraq for 100 years? McCain. Who sang "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" to the Beach Boy's Barbara Anne....and was caught on video tape....it was McCain.
Who supported amnesty, who was among the gang of 14, who voted for Ginsburg and Souter....McCain. Who crushed the constitution with McCain-Feingold? Well, why state the obvious?

Being an anti-war, staunch constitutionalist, anti-wealth redistributionist, liberty loving person as I am, the republicans are fulfilling George Orwell's perpetual war against Eurasia and Bin Laden gets to play the role of Emanuel Goldstein.

We have 2 department of defenses ...one just being called the department of homeland security...employing millions...and they don't even watch our borders. We have about as many private contractors in Iraq as military, and we seem to have forgotten who the actual perpetrator of 911 was. This is insane....costing Trillions our future's money....and where is bin Laden?

We have boobs in our military-industrial complex, embarrassingly can't obtain decent intelligence, and make decisions that cost trillions, invading the sovereignty of a country with no navy, and no airforce...meanwhile where is bin Laden?

According to Bush, he doesn't know and doesn't care....or is that a mis-representation of him too.

Hellernot
I don't believe either of your examples are relevant. Neither actually was in combat situation. Reagan narrated films and Lincoln never actually fought. Most young men in Lincolns time were "members" of a militia. I agree that Mccains service was a thousnad times better than Bill or Obama. Bill Clinton was an actual draft dodger. But, my point remains the same. Just having served in the military is not a prerequisite for being President. If it were, Bush senior and Dole would have won. Kerry would have also trumped George W.s military experience. It is judgement that is needed!

Believe me, I will not be voting for Obama or Hilary, but unfortunately I will not be voting for McCain either. You and others can decide who the next president will be. I have given up on a system that produces such a choice.

Boomer
I'm sorry you have given up. I may not be far from it. I agree that judgement is the most important quality however how can you make a good judgement when you know absolutely nothing about the subject? And we're talking about our safety and security---nothing else comes close in importance. Obama and Clinton havent got a clue whats going on in Iraq and their "judgement" could cost the lives of millions just like it did in post-Vietnam--only this time we'll have to go back.
So it isnt so much that I want McCain---but its necessary to vote for him----to keep the trash at bay.

some very intelligent posts
i am impressed with the civil discussion on this thread.

my problem is with his analogies.

yes we have been in korea and germany for a long time ( and i personally don't know why we maintain so many troops there but that is another issue) but it is not the same.

those countries had a finite end to the violence.

iraq has at least 4 wars going on at once.

turkey vs the kurds
(minor but could blow up)

sunnis vs shia
(calm for now but we are the buffer plus we are paying 10 million a month to keep them pacified.

shia vs shia
what happened in basra will be repeated as iraqi power blocks try to gain power over the oil.

al-queida (foreign fighters) vs america
only real war we should be in.

this is not at all like post war germany, japan or korea.

there was only one enemy and he had been defeated.

we cannot be constantly in the middle of all these battles in iraq , some of which have been going on for a 1000 years.

there has to be a point where we get out.

Not necessarily. Japan and Germany were constant reminders to the Soviets that they were surrounded and had better be careful. Japan and Korea serve much the same purpose for China. These in simple terms were our FOPs. Recent attacks by radicals from the ME mean we need an FOP right on top of them. You’ve never seen any huge movements in these countries to get us out. They unlike many in the US realize the dangers in the world and want our military presence (not to mention our money).
Hey dog…. I’m not sure who you’re apologizing for------your candidates lack of experience or something more personal?

100 Years
Germany 60 Plus Years
Japan 60 Plus Years (we still have troops on Okinawa)
Phillipines 90 years (with a level of insurgency similar to Iraq for about ten years) Read about Samar and Pershing's supression of the Moro revolt.
S. Korea 50 plus years
Bosnia 10 plus years.

I'm all for bringing the troops home. But lets start with Germany, Korea, and Japan. Nor BTW do I want to expand NATO.

Obama a constitutional scholar
That's nice to know. Does he actually believe the statements made by a bunch of slef educated farmers and shopkeepers? Does he actually believe that government should be limited? Does he actually believe that the rights not specifically given to the federal government belong either to the states or to the citizens? Does he actually believe that there should be no religious test for public office?

But
The troops in Japan are for the US benefit not Japan's--as a former Japanese PM said in the 1990s. Even during the bad old days when the Soviets were a threat, US troops were mostly in Okinawa, not near the threat in Hokkaido or northern Honshu. Japan's SDF would have been expected to do much of the heavy lifting during any war with the Soviets in Japan--the US would have bigger problems such as Europe.

As now the US forces are in Japan to project its power in the region, not protect Japan.

Germany serves as a key rear area for the US in the war in Iraq and Italy was used during the Gulf War and the wars in the Balkans, airbases in the UK were used to bomb Libya.

Japan
"You’ve never seen any huge movements in these countries to get us out."

Those in Okinawa wouldn't mind seeing you leave--yesterday. But since it is the Okinawans that bear most of the burden for hosting American troops and not the Japanese themselves, few in Japan really are that put off by the American bases--if 75% of the US bases were instead in Tokyo instead of Okinawa, you'd probably have a much different opinion there than there is today.

To sum up this article:
McCain is infallible because he was in the military. After all, having once been in the military automatically means you are correct on everything related to foreign policy, which is so much more important then domestic policy.

To sum up this article:
McCain is infallible because he was in the military. After all, having once been in the military automatically means you are correct on everything related to foreign policy, which is so much more important then domestic policy.

Lying about "expertise" Repya
Seems like "expertise" is tossed around pretty casually and loosely. Getting your a** shot off doesn't make you an expert in foreign affairs.

I want someone who can make good decisions and being in the military is irrelevant to making good decisions.

O'Bama's the man.

Safe Rear Areas
Akagi, I guess the question is do we really need to project force around the world?

I am not naive enough to believe that everyone would love us is we went home. However, I do not believe that a Wilsonian foreign policy has been especially beneficial for us. The only difference between Bosnia and Iraq is who thougth it was a good idea. The media thought Bosnia was a good idea (ethnic cleansing and all that you know). The neocons thought Iraq a good idea (supposed military threats and all that you know). Unfortunately, we find ourselves in the position of the Spartans after the Peloponessian war. We have accepted more military obligations than we (the people) really want.

On a separate thought line why should we apologize for not intervening in Rwanda?

Akagi
"The troops in Japan are for the US benefit not Japan's"

I disagree. The US is spending 8% of GDP for our country's defense. Japan spends 1% and South Korea spends 2%. Saving money on their own defense allows then to spend this money on R&D for hi-tech and manufacturing. These two countries can defend themselves now. Our job is done. Time to bring our troops home from this part of the Pacific theatre.

costs
The US has borrowed money to pay for the War in Iraq. The war costs $10 billion every month. This works outs to $33 per person, per month, in the USA.

For the typical US family that's $100 a month, basically, forever. Had Americans got an actual bill in the mail for the past 5 years, most conservatives would have advocated a 'cut and run' attitude long ago. Instead the entire bill has been put on the national credit card. Geez, I hope we get to hang onto our precious tax cut.

What Bush Will Do For His Legacy
I am afraid that the war supporters will miss - they always seem to - that tiny little paragraph in yesterday’s paper, “MILITARY LEADERS WARN OF WAR'S TOLL.” It goes on to say that the surge “has put unsustainable levels of stress on U.S. ground forces and has put readiness to fight other conflicts at the lowest level in years.” And that, “the deployments are inflicting incredible stress on soldiers and families.”

The Bush administration was reckless - negligent - in ignoring all warnings and going to war in Iraq without enough troops or an exit strategy and Bush was just as reckless with the surge. There is nothing he will not do to try and salvage his own legacy.

I am a military family member.

I would like to know, if the surge is putting such a strain on the Army, then why are re-enlistments up? I think the men in the field believe in the mission. They know it is vital to the national security of this country. I know that many families are being strained by the length of the deployments. So if you have a deployed family member, I thank you for their service.

100 years: Deadline given US by Islam

I like to think that remark about Iraq by John McCain was a general warning to jihadis testing American resolve in fighting terrorism. It seems like it might have been reality given the determination of those who aim to destroy Iraq. But we know the surge in Iraq has proved to be successful and Iraqi troops continue to train more successfully.

What may have unconsciously and additionally motivated John McCain’s remark raising to “100 years” is the ever-present recognition of the deadline that Islamic leaders have set for America and the world. Several Muslim leaders (at least ones that we know of) have predicted that America and/or the world would become Islamic within 100 years.

Note how long ago the following quotes were made:

The executive director of the American Muslim Council, Abdulrahman Alamoudi, told fellow Muslims in 1996 that the United States “will become a Muslim country, even if it takes 100 years.”

Author Serge Trifkovic has written, “The first imam to deliver a Muslim prayer for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1991, declared in 1997 that Muslims will eventually elect the president and replace the constitutional government with an Islamic caliphate.”

The CAIR co-founder Omar Ahmad announced in 1998, "Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith but to become dominant," The Quran should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth."

In 1993 the Jemaah Islamiah spiritual leader Abu Bakar Bashir preached in Sydney, "The Islamic faithful in Australia must endeavour to bring about an Islamic state in Australia, even if it is 100 years from now," he told the gathering.

John McCain’s long-time military expertise demands he not ignore this 100-year Islamic deadline threat. And neither should we citizens.

US Military options are nil
This whole ball of wax comes down to the elections, whoever controls the oil fields will be the power broker in Iraq. I've made it pretty clear who I predict the winner will be. Still waiting for the war apologists here to offer a real scenario in which the al-Maliki coalition prevails.

There Will Be Wars, Many More Wars
That is what McAmnesty said, or was he misquoted there, too? Or will they all be over in a few months? How is Economically Clueless going to pay for them when we already have a $9 trillion national debt? Was he "misrecorded" when McBeachboy sang "bomb, bomb, bomb... bomb, bomb Iran"? Did cost cutter ever see a military budget he didn't like? How about sending the troops all over the world yet facilitating the invasion of our country by over 25 million illegal aliens and terrorists, promising amnesty to ALL OF THEM? He has an out-of-control temperament that should never get near the nuke football. You know it, I know it, and the American people know it.

How about his religious "conversion" on the road to the South Carolina primary? Last year he actively sought and received the endorsement of the late Falwell who stated "God does not hear the prayers of a Jew," and that "Jews do not go to heaven." This year he actively sought and received the endorsement of Hagee, the outspoken hater of Catholics and Jews. Does anyone believe that his "conversion" from Episcopalian to Baptist at around age 70 was anything
else than political pandering? MCPHARISEE! We need a FULL investigation of that entire matter, just like Obama. Check the sincerety of Mrs. Clinton's religious views, for complete coverage.

How Long?
Surely John McCain does not want and is not suggesting he would accept a 100 years of war in Iraq. I accept his statement "That would be fine with me, as long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed". BUT, how long would he be willing to keep troops in Iraq while they are continuing to be killed or wounded? A very simple question that deserves an
answer. After we've tried a surge or other strategies for long enough but still falling short of keeping our military members alive and well, then when would President McCain advocate leaving? When would you all on this blog?

Great Article Joe!
Very good article Joe. "...Senator McCain will use his experience, judgment and optimism to lead us to victory in this war against radical Islamic extremism..." Right on target!

THIS IS THE BOTTOM LINE. "VICTORY" NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.

McShamesty
Quoted from VDARE.COM
"Nevertheless, of the three, John McCain has pandered more, and longer, and has proven again and again his contempt for US immigration laws. McCain defended the illegal alien marches of 2006. He opposed English Only laws and efforts to assimilate immigrants generally. He also seems fonder of Hispanic culture than traditional American culture: in one speech, he said the U.S. is better off not having a common culture, while in another, to Hispanic congressmen, he said that the Hispanic blood and culture was a "noble cause" that enriched the country. McCains’s Hispanic outreach director, Juan Hernandez, a longtime amnesty agitator, is actually a U.S.-Mexican citizen and a former Mexican cabinet minister!"

Runaway spending by the children in Congress.

Reducing the bloated Federal government.

Dealing with Judicial legislation.

Stopping the bleeding of jobs and business to foreign nations.

Talk honestly about free trade vs. how free trade is practiced today and then demand changes in our legislation to correct this mess.

Demand Congress support home schooling of children without legislating credentials for the parents who school their children.

There are many more issues but for every issue the root cause of the issue is often the Federal Government sticking its nose in and trying to control our lives. Will McCain address any of the above issues with honesty or will he still be of the mind to reach across the aisle and compromise. After all, you compromise in government when your desire to support and defend the Constitution is weak or absent.

McCain with all his foibles is still more likely to do less harm than to absolute Socialists that have absolutely no desire to follow the Constitution.

HARARE -- Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's government raided the offices of the main opposition movement and rounded up foreign journalists yesterday in an ominous indication that he may use violence to keep his grip on power.

The McCain Paradox
Dear Col. Repya:

John McCain has a far bigger problem than Democratic/Liberal mischaracterizations of his record.

Just as he has for years, John McCain recently on the David Letterman Show once again railed against Donald Rumsfeld for a "terribly mismanaged" Iraq War.

But, In doing so, Sen. McCain once again failed to acknowledge the fact that Pres. Bush as the man who calls the shots, appointed and stood by Rumsfeld for four years, ignoring criticism from his own party, even as casualty tolls mounted by the hour.

Also Mr. McCain continues to rate the "surge" in Iraq as a success, while ignoring the fact the "surge" was a consequence of the failure of the Iraq War during Rumsfeld's tenure as Pres. Bush's Secretary of Defense.

As long as two years ago the late Town Hall columnist and Conservative leader William F. Buckley, Jr., declared the Iraq War to be "Pres. Bush's failure."

The reluctance of Sen. McCain to hold the President accountable for Rumsfeld's Reign of Error and the Iraq War mess make for a John McCain paradox: Military hero, political wuss.

Qualifications
Senator McCain's lack of knowledge, and temper, along with his ethical and honesty problems, make him, by far, the least qualified of the candidates for the office of POTUS.

You Missed Something
MDoggg. We weren't allowed to win in Vietnam. We were not allowed to forcefully attack North Vietnam. We had almost enough soldiers there to form a police line and police the county up from South to North. But, the politicians in control wanted to "win the hearts and minds of the people." We fought a defensive war, staying in our own territory. It did not work in the Civil War [for which I am glad], and it hasn't worked since. I could give examples, but I doubt you would understand. Still, since you weren't there, I think comments referring to Vietnam are not appropriate from you.
