Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Do it, President Obama, please. Take the side of democracy.

Declare yourself and your nation on the side of hope and change where it is more than a slogan and better than a rationalization for ever-bigger government. Stop measuring the success of your diplomacy with Iran by the degree to which the grinning, hate-filled stooge of a clerical junta will "temper" his rhetoric about the pressing need to destroy Israel and slow his ineluctable pursuit of nuclear weapons.

*** Special Offer ***

Instead, choose a higher standard. Look to history. Look to the aspirations of the students risking their lives and livelihoods to protest a sham election. Stop fawning over the mythological Muslim street only when it hates America, and look to the real Iranian street at the moment of its greatest need, when its heart may be open to loving America.

You often invoke President Kennedy's pledge to put a man on the moon to justify your domestic agenda. You and your supporters invite comparisons to Camelot. Well, what of John F. Kennedy's most solemn vow? "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

No, we should not bomb Iran, or invade it. Those prices are too steep; those burdens are too heavy. But maybe you could lift a finger for democracy?

During the campaign you mocked those who belittled your rhetoric as "just words." Well, what you've offered so far is less than just words. You've put a fresh coat of whitewash on Iran's sham "democracy." On Monday, you proclaimed yourself "troubled" by the events in Iran, before hinting that you'd negotiate with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad no matter what an official investigation into his "landslide" victory found. (Would you trust Mafia internal audits, too?)

Before the sham election you cheered Iran's "robust debate." But that debate has been robust only if you are grading on a curve. Ahmadinejad's main opponent, Mir Hossein Mousavi, was an accidental reform candidate. The mullahs had disqualified about 400 others, leaving in the race only four presumed hacks deemed pliant enough not to rock the boat. Mousavi's popular support and the robustness of the debate he ignited were an unintended consequence of a rigged election and a clerical politburo indifferent to its people's desires, not the intention of a democratic regime.

Reportedly, you are biding your time, waiting to see what happens, as if it is a great mystery. Your campaign lived and breathed YouTube. Check it now, check it often. You and your team promised "soft power" and "smart power." How about moral power? Because by not clearly picking a side, it appears you have chosen the wrong side.

Do you fear antagonizing the powers-that-be in Iran? That ship has sailed. Though I am sure they're tickled by your eagerness not to roil the seas around them. Is it because you think "leader of the free world" is just another of those Cold War relics best mothballed in favor of a more cosmopolitan and universal awe at your own story?

"Enough about those people bleeding in the street. What do you think of me?" Is that how it is to be?

During the Bush years, what was best about liberalism had bled away. One of the worst things about the Republican Party has always been its Kissingerian realpolitik, the "it's just business" approach to world affairs that amounted to a willful blindness to our ideals beyond our own borders. The Democratic Party may not have always gotten the policies right, but it had a firm grasp of the principle.

In the 1990s, liberals championed "nation building," and many conservatives chuckled at the naivete of it. Then came Iraq, and Republicans out of necessity embraced what liberals once believed out of conviction. The result? Liberals ran from their principles, found their inner Kissingers and championed a cold realism whose chill emanated from the corpse of their ideals.

Labor unions, such as the AFL-CIO, once battled tyranny abroad on the grounds that workers everywhere need democracy. Today, the president turns a blind eye to the independent labor movement in Iran, and the unions and Democrats spend their time trying to figure out how to eliminate the secret ballot in the American workplace.

So far, "hope and change" has meant spending trillions we do not have on expanded government we do not need. Meanwhile, the huddled masses of Iranians yearning to breathe free think hope and change means something more. But the new American colossus stands all but silent, her beacon dimmed, her luster tarnished.

Please, Mr. President, prove me wrong. Stop voting "present" on democracy.

And, how about you (Obama) lift your little pinkie to further democracy?

Thank you, Jonah. All that you wrote is truth. Of course, we know that the Liberals will come and criticize you and I because they do not like to be caught short. And, right now, Obama has been caught short. He is behind the French and the British newspapers have called him a coward. This makes the Liberals further stick their heads in the sand, for they would surely explode if they faced the facts.

Carpe diem, Mr. President; Seize the day

Jonah Goldberg writes: "Your campaign lived and breathed YouTube. Check it now, check it often. You and your team promised "soft power" and "smart power." How about moral power? Because by not clearly picking a side, it appears you have chosen the wrong side."

President Reagan publically supported the Polish people against the oppression of the Soviet Union in the early 1980’s. He had 'moral authority'.

Our current president has no 'moral authority' or 'moral power'. Whatever he began his administration with was squandered almost immediately. Without honesty and integrity, there can be no 'moral authority'.

But as our elected representative, he COULD offer the moral support and encouragement of the American people, and he SHOULD.

And it is a disgrace that he has not done so.

The best hope we have at regime change in Iran is from an uprising of the Iranian people themselves. The very least we could do is support them publically, condemn dictatorial oppression and vocally support those who are putting their lives on the line, struggling for freedom.

This opportunity may not come again for generations.

Carpe diem, Mr. President.

Seize the day.

The ship has sailed on liberalism

Liberalism has moved into its next stage of development - the passive, self-indulgent stage. In this stage, a nation is not to be judged by its principles or adherence to them, but rather by how much money it spends on its lowliest citizens.

Equality is another standard of measure, such that wealth is good only so long as it is spread around equally, e.g. the state takes and spends 50% of GDP while the other half stays in the private sector, and a brain surgeon's after-tax income is not more than twice the income of an unemployed single mother on welfare.

Adherence to quixotic nonsense like global warming, moral relativism and multiculturalism is a third standard of measure. Therefore, an America who believes that she is exceptional is forgetting that she despoils nature by consuming too many resources, is deeply racist and genocidal against non-whites, and has no real claims to Truth, especially all that quaint nonsense in the Declaration of Independence about inalienable rights endowed by the Creator (creator? - hah!) to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What mush!

Welcome to postmodern liberalism, which should now be called "progressivism" because liberalism is saddled with too much negative baggage, e.g. all that stuff that JFK said about liberty.

>Yea ... Mousavi really deserves are support<

WHO IS MIR HOSSEIN MOUSAVI REALLY?
Tuesday, June 16, 2009 11:17 AM

As the demonstrations against Friday’s rigged elections rage in Tehran, Mir-Hossein Mousavi – who finished second to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with 33% of the vote – has arisen as the symbol of Iran’s insurgent pro-democratic movement. But Mousavi hardly deserves this recognition. Indeed, far from being a liberal “reformist,” Mousavi owes his rise within Iranian politics to the very “tyranny” that he now claims to be fighting against.....

Following Khomeini’s removal of President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr and the execution of Bani-Sadr’s allies in June 1981, Mousavi joined the new government as Minister of Foreign Affairs. Only four months later, the parliament affirmed Mousavi as Iran’s fifth prime minister – a move that The Globe and Mail interpreted as signaling Tehran’s desire to “expand its world role and ‘export’ its Islamic revolution.”

In this regard, Mousavi didn’t disappoint. During his premiership, Iran founded Hezbollah – a Shiite terrorist group based in southern Lebanon with active cells scattered worldwide.

More Grandstanding Please !
Obama needs to Grandstand on the issue of the Iranian election. He needs to tell the Iranian people that the same country the orchestrated a coup against their democratically elected government in 1953 now wants to promote 'Democracy'. Even though no one in Iran has asked for Obama's support, he should give it anyway because by not doing so the Townhall conservatives will remain upset and the ruling clerics of Iran would have a new issue of their on to use to Grandstand: " American Imperialism Behind the Riots"

It appears that the Iranian people themselves have given their own voices to the dubious outcome of this election. Our meddling is not a requirement or necessary except to appease American conservatives. Period !

Jim, Co

I know all about Mousavi's past involvement with Iran's nuclear weapons programme (the 1980s). I was warning people last week not to buy into the crud that was being peddled that Mousavi's election would represent a sea change in Iran.

You are making the assumption that the protestors are out in force solely because they support Mousavi. My belief, which is supported by governments and journalists, is that the protestors want to get rid of the theocracy and Ahmadinejad. They just voted for the "other guy", not Ahmadinejad.

Why should not Obama speak up in their defense or, at least, in favor of small d democracy? He is behind even France on this one.

No one is suggesting military intervention although the UN could approve sanctions and a naval blockade, which would bring down the government. I believe that it is incumbent on the protestors to fight their own Revolutionary or Civil war, like this country did.

But, does it really hurt to have Obama offer a little more than tepid concern for the protestors?

The Return Of Idealism?

"So I have been struck over the past few days by the response of American pundits to the events in Iran. I cannot remember the last time that there was such a clear consensus across the political spectrum that one side in an internal political dispute in another country deserved our unabashed support. Every publication from The Weekly Standard to The Nation seems exhilarated by the prospect of Iranian liberals standing up to the theocrats who rule their country. Of course, there are sharp disagreements over how we should support the protesters. Should Obama speak out loudly on their behalf? Or would a forceful American response simply aid the mullahs and undermine the protesters? These are important questions, but they are tactical ones. What no one seems to be disputing is the underlying idea that Iranian liberals deserve our support--that their fight is our concern.

It remains to be seen whether this consensus on Iran will trickle up to the White House. Obama has shown little appetite for criticizing other governments, for making the kinds of moral judgments that are at the core of foreign policy idealism. For now, you can at least make a plausible argument that Obama's relatively quiet approach is serving Iranian protesters well. But if we reach a situation--for instance, a Tiananmen-style crackdown--where it becomes obvious that strong condemnations and tough diplomacy will be required to protect Iranian liberals, will Obama have the stomach for it? And will public opinion be able to pressure him to do the right thing? That is when we will find out just how strong a comeback idealism has made."

Mary - Positively Bob Dylan, 1965 ;-)

A great, great song, thanks for bringing it up!

You got a lotta nerve,
To say you are my friend…
When I was down,
You just stood there grinning.

You got a lotta nerve,
To say you got a helping hand to lend…
You just want to be on
The side that's winning.

You say I let you down,
You know it's not like that…
If you're so hurt,
Why then don't you show it?

You say you lost your faith,
But that's not where it's at…
You had no faith to lose,
And you know it!

I know the reason,
That you talk behind my back…
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with…

Do you take me for such a fool,
To think I'd make contact…
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with?

You see me on the street,
You always act surprised…
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck!"
But you don't mean it…

When you know as well as me,
You'd rather see me paralyzed…
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it!

No, I do not feel that good,
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace…
If I was a master thief,
Perhaps I'd rob them.

And now I know you're dissatisfied,
With your position and your place…
Don't you understand,
It's not my problem?

I wish that for just one time,
You could stand inside my shoes…
And just for that one moment,
I could be you…

Yes, I wish that for just one time,
You could stand inside my shoes…
You'd know what a drag it is,
To see you…

France Is Strong, Obama Is Weak
The President yesterday denounced the "extent of the fraud" and the "shocking" and "brutal" response of the Iranian regime to public demonstrations in Tehran these past four days.

"These elections are an atrocity," he said. "If [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad had made such progress since the last elections, if he won two-thirds of the vote, why such violence?" The statement named the regime as the cause of the outrage in Iran and, without meddling or picking favorites, stood up for Iranian democracy.

The President who spoke those words was France's Nicolas Sarkozy.

The French are hardly known for their idealistic foreign policy and moral fortitude. Then again many global roles are reversing in the era of Obama. The American President didn't have anything to say the first two days after polls closed in Iran on Friday and an improbable landslide victory for Mr. Ahmadinejad sparked the protests. "I have deep concerns about the election," he said yesterday at the White House, when he finally did find his voice. "When I see violence directed at peaceful protestors, when I see peaceful dissent being suppressed, wherever that takes place, it is of concern to me and it's of concern to the American people."

No wonder that the British press has called Obama a coward.

Obama's plan...

Obama's plan...

Let the rest of the world go to hell.

He's taking US there, on the FAST TRAIN !

A high speed motorboat ride across the River Styx, if you will.

"Present" at the Presidency
President Obama has demonstrated, once again, that past performance is the best predictor of future performance. He has always been indecisive on controversial issues. He only takes sides when the vote is over and he has strong liberal support. By voting to elect Obama as president, Americans had the "audicity of hope" that past performance would somehow change. Ha Ha! I don't have such audaucity. His "concern" about the votes in Iran, and his "grave concern" about the nuclear threat from both Iran and North Korea show that he is just "present" as our President. We needed more than that last November and we still do. Now you know.

tens of thousands killed
"does it really hurt to have Obama offer a little more than tepid concern for the protestors?"

Yes, it killed tens of thousands in Iraq. The first president Bush encouraged the Shiites and Kurds on so strongly that they incorrectly assumed that he would back them up militarily. As their revolution escalated, Saddam Hussein ended up killing tens of thousands of them with poison gas.

That lead to UN no-fly zones and a whole chain of events including the current Iraq War.

The "present" President.
Because we Americans don't like the Iranian government and it muslim dictators it should be easy for our president to condemn the apparent voter fraud in Iran. Furthermore is should be easy for our president to condemn Iran for its response to the protesters in the strongest terms. But we did not get that from our president. France, the object of appeasement accusations for the last century, has out did us on this one. On foreign policy matters, we stand for "talk" but not for "action". Talk is cheap. Cheap talk cheapens America.

If the choice is to do or not to do, the better choice is to do. Anybody can do nothing, but it takes "Sombody" to do something. Is Obama a Sombody or a nobody. Actions speak louder than words. Now you know.

Obama is a moral relativist
who has never had to make a tough decision in his pampered life. The man has never filled out a job application, for heaven's sake! His baseline belief system is faulty, and disallows critical thinking and decision making because it denies reality: that is is good and there is evil.

For Obama, life has been one great big accommodation and indulgence festival, and he has no reason to think that everyone else in the world- including depots and tyrants- won't rise up and call his poop blessed.

Obama - man of action
Barack Obama has already proven himself to be a great commander-in-chief. It's because he's a man of action.

Case #1 is Pakistan. George Bush never had the courage to do anything about it, so Al Qaeda, the ones who launched 9/11, sat there year after year laughing at us, facing nothing more than drone missile strikes.

But the first thing President Obama did when he took office was to publicly say that if Pakistan didn't remove the terrorists, that we would. Faced with a man of action, the Pakistani government has taken action. Hundreds of terrorists who were safe during the Bush Administration are dead. Others are trying to flee overseas.

Case #2 is North Korea. For 16 years the Clinton and Bush administration appeased NK, wrongly assuming that with the correct package they would give up their nukes. Obama realized that was a mistake. He has said no more negotiations and has shifted to military action, boarding and searching North Korean ships.

ANYONE but Bob Dylan
The man is as profound as a little neck clam and has succeeded in elevating whining to a whole new, nerve-wracking level.

Jonah
What you said!

Additionally, I believe it is not just the election that Iranians are protesting, it is the control of the country by the Mullahs that is the root cause of the situation.

Neo-Cons have weak stomachs
One thing for sure: any terrorist who kills a few civilians can get neo-cons to do whatever they want. Neo's like Goldberg have too weak a stomach and can't stand seeing anyone suffer.

One example is 9/11. Bin Laden said all along that he wanted to use terrorist attacks to trigger a Christian vs. Muslim holy war. The neo-cons have done exactly what that terrorist wants. Bin Laden, that enemy of America, played them like a violin.

Same thing in Iran. They kill a few foreign civilians, and all of a sudden US neo-cons stop talking about what is best for America and our self defense. Instead they do exactly what those killers wanted, for the US to respond exactly as they want.

It reminds me of the weak liberal Jimmy Carter lecturing the whole world about "human rights".

OBAMA, JFK& IRAN; A PROFILE IN COWARDICE
Boiling anger at Ahmadinejad and the mullahs is turning to disillusionment with Barack Obama as the Iranian masses see our unsupportive spineless leader for what he is: A PATHETIC MORAL COWARD. "The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who stay neutral in time of moral crisis." said JFK quoting Dante. The time is now, the crisis is here and where is Obama the messiah of morality and enlightened world leadership? Where is his outreach to Moslems? To the enslaved suffering people of a theonazi state wanting their freedom like the people in neigbhoring Iraq? Where is he? Sitting on the sidelines thinking that he's prudent when he's letting down millions. Think of Ronald Reagan, think of Poland, think of his crucial support for Lech Walesa and Solidarity. With good reason we say that Obama is the anti-Reagan, his antitheis and polar opposite in everything from wisdom to valor and presidential leadership.

By slow degrees this president is turning the White House into a hell house that will engulf him in flames and burn him to cinders becoming his funeral pyre. If JFK were alive today he would be deeply ashamed of Obama; deeply ashamed that his brother and child were his kingmakers; deeply ashamed that he's the leader of the Free World; deeply ashamed at his profile in moral gutlessness and unpresidential weakness. May merciful God take him from us, sparing us from the harm that he's doing our Republic and saving him from the torments of failure and despair.

Sigfried
Obama's foreign policy:

1)Pakistan let him in fearing the Taliban would win against their own country. That wasn't an Obama thing. That was completely a Pakistan thing. If Pakistan invited any President Bush, Clinton, (even Carter) they would have bombed Northern Pakistan. Again, Obama wouldn't have bombed a sovereign nation if they didn't ask him to.

2) Seizing North Korean vessels. This is actually a good policy. One that would have destroyed the Bush administration because the press would have called him a warmonger. But sometimes it takes Nixon to make peace with China so I am actually somewhat happy with this one and won't criticize on him. But again if a Republican did this guess how the press would have treated it? Heck, 6 parties talks were treated as if Bush was a warmonger. But I am certain you would have called him level headed for seizing North Korean vessel.

Jonah isn't that much of a Neocon. A Neocon wants Iran bombed ASAP like most people in Israel want to bomb Iran. All this article is saying is don't support Iran's decision to suppress democracy. Say something. You blow the article out of proportion to make your argument look better, but it just makes us think you didn't read the article. I had to reread the article over just to see if I had missed the bomb Iran into obvilion line that you so cleverly discovered (it's not there).

This just in. . .
Responding to a column by Jonah Goldberg, the president replied:

"Uh . . ."

This just in. . .
After consulting his advisors, the president, with the aid of a teleprompter, further responded to a column by Jonah Goldberg:

"This is the type of divisive and hateful rhetoric that has destroyed our once great nation. Instead of reaching across the aisle to embrace my entirely reasonable stance on this issue, Mr. Goldberg can only criticize and lament. His position is unfortunate and naive."

real conservative, not neo-con
"I am certain you would have called him level headed for seizing North Korean vessel"

I am a conservative so it would have been easy to praise President Bush. Like I compliment him on his initial reaction to 9/11, and the liberation of Afghanistan.

I am an American above anything else, including party, so if Obama does something right, I'll say so.

But I am a real conservative, not a neo-con, and I have no problem criticizing them. Bush's mistake was listening too much to the neo-cons.

Silence always benefits the bully;
it always works to the detriment of the ones being harmed.

I agree that it would be a mistake to speak in such a way as to give the impression that America would come to the aid of the Iranian people with military assistance, but a sound rebuke to the governing parties, as was done by Sarkozy, would at least give the protesters the knowledge that the free world is on their side in spirit. (But then, that wouldn't give Obama "wiggle room," would it?)

Since Obama loves to speak
to the Muslim world so much, why not give one of his "major" speeches to the citizens of Iran, "inspiring" them to embrace democracy and freedom at all cost? After all, aren't we learning that Obama can change the global political climate with his rhetorical skills? Juan Williams all but said as much yesterday.

Take a stand, weakling in the White House!!!!

poseur President
Obama will no more offer a clear, decisive response, than he will pick up his pin and reclassify the detainee images, which will be made public when he signs the war funding bill. A Commander in Chief, who will not lift a finger to protect his troops, can hardly be expected to support the Iranian demonstrator.

He'll either blame Bush, or blither some platitude, and strike the "above it all" pose... again.

Can't sort out whether he's incompetent, or simply a gangster.... firing an Inspector General who is investigating one of his cronies at Americore.... That was quick and decisive!

He can certainly find time to push a domestic agenda which is crippling our own economy.... usurping OUR freedom, frittering away OUR wealth, undermining OUR currency, threatening OUR choices in healthcare, restricting use of OUR natural resources, pandering at every turn to his powerful contributors.... and he poses.... and poses.... and poses.

Obama
"Do it, President Obama, please. Take the side of democracy."

Obama is taking the side for democracy. Iran stayed out of our Florida mayhem, we should stick out of theirs. We overthrew one of their presidents already in 1953.

Goldberg is a child
It's obvious that Goldberg is letting is hatred of Obama get the better of him.

Below is what Obama said to CNBC yesterday. Obama sounds far more reasonable than the neocons.

"[It's] important to understand that although there is amazing ferment taking place in Iran, that the difference between Ahmadinejad and Mousavi in terms of their actual policies may not be as great as has been advertised. Either way, we were going to be dealing with an Iranian regime that has historically been hostile to the United States, that has caused some problems in the neighborhood and is pursuing nuclear weapons. And so we've got long-term interests in having them not weaponize nuclear power and stop funding organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas. And that would be true whoever came out on top in this election.

The second thing that I think's important to recognize is that the easiest way for reactionary forces inside Iran to crush reformers is to say it's the US that is encouraging those reformers."

to be continued

marcmat
Obama interfering now in Iran would be like letterman telling Palin she needs to keep a better eye on her kids.

Obama's words continued
"So what I've said is, `Look, it's up to the Iranian people to make a decision. We are not meddling.' And, you know, ultimately the question that the leadership in Iran has to answer is their own credibility in the eyes of the Iranian people. And when you've got 100,000 people who are out on the streets peacefully protesting, and they're having to be scattered through violence and gunshots, what that tells me is the Iranian people are not convinced of the legitimacy of the election. And my hope is that the regime responds not with violence, but with a recognition that the universal principles of peaceful expression and democracy are ones that should be affirmed. Am I optimistic that that will happen? You know, I take a wait-and-see approach. Either way, it's important for the United States to engage in the tough diplomacy around those permanent security concerns that we have--nuclear weapons, funding of terrorism. That's not going to go away, and I think it's important for us to make sure that we've reached out."

Comparing the two, Goldberg sounds like little whiney little brat. Obama sounds like a wise leader of the world's most powerful country.

Oh, and by the way, he didn't have a teleprompter.

siegfreid
"Case #2 is North Korea. For 16 years the Clinton and Bush administration appeased NK, wrongly assuming that with the correct package they would give up their nukes. Obama realized that was a mistake. He has said no more negotiations and has shifted to military action, boarding and searching North Korean ships."

Yeah, Lil' Kim is screwing with the paper tiger. He could waited to detonate a nuclear bomb, but he chose to do so when Obama was overseas on yet another apology tour.

North Korea has stated that any interdiction of one of its vessels by the US will be a declaration of war by us. Obama has NOT stated that we would be boarding the boats. The UN has NOT stated that such is permissible. So, what? Is Obama just going to order the Navy to follow the ship into port? What will it do then?

You are seriously short some marbles if you think that Obama is going to make more progress with Lil' Kim than did Clinton or Bush. He is a madman, a nut with nukes.

Lastly, why has Obama not requested that China shut off the oil and water supply to North Korea? Why has he not played the Japanese Card to force China to do so?

The one thing that scares the crap out of China is the thought of a nuclearized Japan.

Japan
Apparently has it set up, like Iran, that if they should start to feel over threatened by bullies, like China, they could threaten to go nuclear, pretty rational of them.

Because we should be careful

Why should not Obama speak up in their defense or, at least, in favor of small d democracy? He is behind even France on this one.

>Because it is one thing for us here or even in the Weekly Standard to enjoy the discomport of the Ayatollahs over this. But does Obama really want to give them the weapon of accusing these protestors of being backed by the "Great Satan"?

It is much better for this to be a purely Iranian protest ... besides for all we know, Ahmadimanut may have really won.<

Coward in the Whitehouse
Standing up for anything that requires a modicum of courage is not O's style.

Jonah and the Whale
Now, Goldberg says we don't want to bomb Iran, and only months ago he was a leading cheerleader in the "bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran" chorus troop. Does he not remember.

Balls vs. Brains
OK the new knock on Obama. That he is vacillating on Iran. Not true. There is absolutely no benefit in making some cowboys atatement about Iran and a lot of risks. The last thing that Obama wants to do is give the Mullahs a weapon that they can use against the opposition in Iran. There may be a time to speak out more forcefully for example if the regime violently puts down the rebellion.

Any conparisons with Poland just don't make sense and Goldberg knows it. Goldberg and Senators wanting to score points with their red meat wing nut constituents can pander all they want with big brazen statements but a president must be smart. And finally, we have one who is.

RL
Ready, fire, aim is not courage it is stupidity and have had enough of that when the Neo-cons were in power.

Troubled?
Of course Obama is troubled. He's afraid that those who want something other than an Islamic controlled state in Iran might just win.

He’s afraid his Muslim brothers might just get kicked out of office and their theocracy will become a democracy.

HORRORS!! Not another democracy in the Middle East!!

Republicans
Does anyone doubt that, if Obama had declared the elections a sham and openly declared solidarity with the protesters, the right wing pundits like Goldberg would have been calling Obama reckless, naive and inexperienced?

It's so obvious that the right will NEVER approve of ANYTHING Obama does.

You guys cheered Bush while he spend a trillion dollars invading Iraq when there was absolutely no need to do so, but you're ready to march in the streets when Obama spends the same amount to try and stop our country from going into an economic free-fall.

Don't you people see how transparent your hatred for Obama is to the rest of us?

This mindless hatred of Obama and Democrats is what is turning so many people off from the Republican Party. You people don't think anymore. It's all emotional outbursts and tired slogans about the evils of government. This is why college educated people are running away from Republicans.

Simple solutions from simple minds.

Ms. Kelly
Are you you aware of Iran/USA history?

"..President George W. Bush's inclusion of Iran in the "axis of evil" (alongside Iraq and North Korea) and his calls for regime change in Tehran have produced precisely the opposite of what Bush hoped for. The label may have had a nice ring to American ears, particularly at a time when the United States was beginning to prepare its case against Saddam. But it dealt a severe blow to those in Iran who were fighting for political liberalization. Bush proclaimed the "axis of evil" in January 2002, soon after Tehran and Washington had cooperated in setting up the government of Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan -- their only successful joint venture since the Iranian Revolution. At the time, the reformist administration of Muhammad Khatami was struggling to sustain itself against its radical opponents. Although President Khatami's failure in Iran was due to many factors, not least his own timid leadership style, Washington's contemptuous dismissal of his democratization program appears to have been phenomenally self-defeating, especially considering the slash-and-burn rhetoric Ahmadinejad favors today."

A few thoughts
Obama's reluctance to embrace the Iranian dissidents suggests that he's not completely obsessed with foreigners' opinion of him. Perhaps he has found a part of the world where he has no wish to be hailed as a savior. His failure to give the dissidents perfuctory symbolic support suggests that he realizes some symbolism is utterly empty. His refusal to endorse Mousavi suggests that he knows no major player in Iran is a moderate in any sense recognized by polite Western society.

Can it be that Obama is showing signs of maturation? Nah.

He doesn't give a damn about democracy in Iran. Provided that he and his party remain in power, he doesn't care much about democracy in the United States, either.

Further, he knows that making a big fuss over the procedural details of Iranian elections could eventually expose him and his buddies to unwanted scrutiny. He ran a fraudulent presidential campaign. (As I've said before, he meets the current, woefully lax standards of American citizenship. But he has systematically suppressed his personal information because he expected informed voters to reject him as a noncitizen -- or because he has doubts about his own citizenship.) He's funneling vast sums of public money into criminal organizations with a history of electoral misconduct. He's trying to hijack the census for partisan advantage. His AG has condoned voter intimidation by racist thugs. His filibuster-proof Senate majority depends on two ailing dinosaurs (Byrd and Kennedy), a smelly court case (Coleman vs. Franken), and a creep who bought his office (Burris). There's no telling what Obama and his more extreme supporters will do to consolidate power in 2010 and hold onto the White House in 2012.

The last thing Obama needs is a lot of potentially embarrassing talk about free and fair elections.

Will You Trolls Learn What A Neo-Con Is?

Neo-cons are former Democrats, who are overwhelmingly Jewish, that defected to the Republican Party over Carter's disastrous handling of Iran.

Carter was brought down be the economy and his inept handling of Iran.

He abandoned the Shah, which led to the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

Americans were held hostage for over a year.

Carter's attempt to free them resulted in an episode that would have been laughable had it not been tragic.

Obama can follow Carter's lead. In fact, I beg that he do so.

History has been known to repeat itself.

Jimmah Obama will be begging the next President to remove AQ from the terror list, just like Carter is doing relative to Hamas.

Are you aware of Iran USA history?
TAFT is absolutely right.

His is a more thoughtful statement than Goldberg's. Kennedy's action toward Cuba, which Goldberg admires, led to the Bay of Pigs, distaste for the United States, and the stifling of democracy on that island for the next 50 years.

Obama's handling it just right, in a way that won't stir up resentment against The Great Satan (us) while giving the democratic opposition a chance to succeed on its own.

St. Denise
"
He abandoned the Shah, which led to the Iranian Revolution in 1979."

The Shah, his agrarian policies - Iranians very upset about the Shah's White Revolution. Agrarian reform a disaster.}, his gestapoish police, and his bad ruling are what brought on the Iranian revolution.

"After October 1971, the shah hardened his position further and indicated that he would no longer tolerate any internal dissent or political opposition. ...The new policy resulted in a reign of terror . These systematic use of the ugliest forms of torture became the order of the day. "

WOW!

You lunatics scream for the right of woman to allow an abortionist to punch a hole in a near-term unborn child, suck out its brains collapsing the fragile skull, and tear the child limb from limb from its mother's womb.

You lunatics scream bloody murder over the Iraqis and Afghanis, who have died in the (now) overseas contingency operations.

You lunatics want to meddle in Israel's internal affairs and intervene in Darfur.

Blah, blah, blah...

But, when Iranians are being macheted and/or killed in the streets of Tehran, you argue that it is not for us to speak out against the atrocities.

I can be against abortion, the death penalty, and Iraq and for allowing Israel to determine what is in its own best interest for survival, aid and assistance to help the Darfur refugees so that they can defeat the Janjaweed, and standing on the side of small "d" democracy by supporting the green shoots of freedom in a totalitrarian regime.

You are so hardlined that you tie yourself up into knots of hypocrisy.

Taft

You are correct that the Shah was a dictator for 26 years, but he was followed a regime made up of madmen like the Ayatollah, the Mullahs, and nuts like Ahmadinejad.

Who is worse? Does it matter?

At least, the Shah did not become a lightning rod, whose actions threaten to ignite an arms race in the ME. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and other countries in the region have stated that the worst possible event that could occur in the ME would be if Iran became nuclearized.
Most of the countries in the ME detest the Iranian regime and are petrified that Iran will attack them, too.

You can always
tell when one of the TH columnists hits a homerun -- the nutjobs come out in droves, scream about Bush, and blather on and on about perceived moral equivalencies that don't withstand the slightest scrutiny.

The irony is palpable
Taft -- you are absolutely correct. Why one earth would Obama make one of his "major" speeches at the precise moment that it might actually have some impact????

Go figure.

The answer, of course
is that Obama is not interested in leading, but rather selling snake-oil to the American public. It stands to reason since the man has never actually done anything in his life.

Now Do You See?
This is why the left is so determined to repeal the second amendment. When B.O. and A C O R N try this in 2012 they would prefer that all we have are rocks. I bet the Iranian people wish they had a way to defend themselves against tyranny.

A Question
Question: Why is the U.S. so consumed by Iran? We spend more time worried about them than we do the nuclear powers combined (China, Russia, India, Pakistan).

Answer: Because they are an enemy of Israel.

The people in the media who want us to get involved with Iran should register with the government as foreign agents for Israel.

Weakness at home leads to weakness abroad...

"You cannot spend your way out of a recession or borrow your way out of debt. And when you repeat, in that wooden and perfunctory way, that our situation is better than others, that we are well placed to weather the storm, I have to tell you, you sound like a Brezhnev era apparatchik giving the party line. You know and we know and you know that we know that it's nonsense. Everyone knows that we are possibly worse off than at any other moment in our history as we go into these hard times. The world has said so. Our people have said so. The Chinese have said so as we monetize our money or, as Mr. Geithner would say, we use quantitative easing, which all others except you recognize to be monetization. The Germans, the French, the Russians, and Pravda have all but said so. The value of our dollar says so, which is why it is falling like a rock. In a 18 months, the voters will have their chance to say so, too. They can see what the fundamentals say and what those not drinking the Kool-Aid have seen all along: that you are the devalued Leader of a devalued Government."

Obama is a Weak President
For Obama to dodge support for the People demonstrating the obviously rigged elections in Iran is Totally weak. All Obama is good for is bad mouthing this country that has done nothing but give him Opportunities to succeed. He is absolutely Pathetic.

Do Not Beg for BO
Dear Mr. Goldberg,
He is supposed to be working for us. We don't have to ask him to do his job with such pleasing niceties. We should tell him what to do as an employer tells an employee, giving him good advice such as what Sun TZU said:
"The skillful leader divides the enemy.
He disrupts cooperation between their divisions.
He prevents the strong troops from helping the weak.
He confounds the officers’ ability to rally their troops.
By injecting chaos into the enemy’s ranks he achieves victory."

Thanks for Your Attention to This Matter.

The whole world know's Obama is a coward by the way he reacted to the Georgia/Russian conflict. He doesn't have the guts to stand up for Liberty and Freedom for oppressed people. George W Bush freed 33 million Iraqi Muslims from a brutal mass murderer and virtual slavery then gave them the gift of Democracy. All Obama gave the Muslims is a Ahsalam Alekum speech and apologies from their American brother. The North Koreans and Iranian's know Obama is soft and they are going to push hard. Obama is way out of his league, he needs to go back to the Illinois Senate where he can make good speeches that wont ruin our Country.

Are you serious?

Bush "freed" 33 million (?) Iraqis' and gave them the gift of democracy.

Total nonsense.

The war was a complete debacle and the people of Iraq are worse off now than before the war (especially the Christians). The millions who fled the country pretty much says it all.

Bush was the coward not Obama. Bush attacked Iraq because he thought they were weak not because he thought they were strong.

Calling Planned Parenthood and Dr. Tiller's sucessor!

Since the fly was possibly pregnant, would not have Obama wanted to use tax dollars to send it to Planned Parenthood for verification?

If it had been pregnant, would he not have given it the "freedom of choice" to visit Dr. Tiller's successor.

Of course, if the baby flies had been born alive due to a flawed fly fetus abortion, the BAFPA (Born Alive Fly Protection Act) would not have applied. No, Obama would have insured that the Mother Lode had the right to let the baby flies die, cold and alone, inside of an utility closet.

Live free or die? I think NOT.

For those not in the know, Rush killed a fly on television in 1995. Why do you not know this? The state-run media did not run endless, breathless loops of the fly murder.

You must be a Bush advisor, don't bother with the reality of the world, just act on your ideologue. Obama is obviously for democracy like most Americans, but he is more worried about Iran getting a nuclear bomb. And there is no difference between the two Iranians on that point. Since he will have to deal with whoever wins this election, what would he possible alienate and make someone hate us even more when the stakes are about a nuclear bomb? Your advice is some of the most reckless and dangerous to the national security of this country. This is the exact reason the people rejected someone like Sarah Palin, the know when someone is in over their head and can not be trusted to keep this country safe. I am sure you were one of those telling Bush to charge into Iraq without thinking of the consequences. They were reports warning Bush that Iraq would break up along religious sects, and the Sunni and Shiite sects would probably start a civil war, but did Bush even take those reports serious, no, he claims God told him to invade Iraq. How delusional can one person be before he is considered a national security threat to the country itself?

PRESENT? OR PRESIDENT? WHICH IS IT O?

About Islam

"....A true cynic could attribute the multiple appearances of Nazis in Star Trek to an abundance of extra Nazi uniforms filling studio costume vaults. ..
But the use of Nazis on Star Trek goes a bit deeper, since the thematic and philosophical precepts of Trek are in direct opposition to what the Aryan Nazis stood for. The term Nazi comes from a shortening of National Socialism, the movement which took hold in Germany after the First World War left the nation in tatters. The Nazis rallied Germans together under one ideal, proclaiming the German people as a superior race, whereas the future of mankind in the Gene Roddenberry vision is one of tolerance and mutual respect for all races across the galaxy.
"Patterns of Force" served to demonstrate the contrast between Federation ideals and Nazi rhetoric. When Earth historian John Gill attempts to help the planet Ekos by introducing Nazi culture, he does so hoping that he can accomplish the positive outcomes of a fascist society without the negatives that ultimately led to Germany's defeat. On the one hand, the Nazis in Germany managed to turn around, economically, the destitute and downward-spiraling nation, but only at a terrible cost.
What the failures of Nazi Germany and John Gill's Ekosian effort demonstrate is that when beings of any kind fall into the mindset of their own superiority, it always means they must find someone to be superior to. In Germany, the Jewish people (among others) became scapegoats. On the planet Ekos, beings from the neighboring planet Zeon assumed that role.
Even in the optimistic future of Star Trek, "Patterns of Force" warns us that the price of maintaining a tolerant and peaceful balance between races, groups and nations is to stay vigilant against dangerous ways of thinking. Whenever any one group or race begins to consider itself right regardless of the circumstances, catastrophe is lurking nearby.

Mariane Pearl

Time Magazine July 2, 2007

Five years ago, extremists murdered her journalist husband Daniel in Pakistan. Mariane Pearl takes some questions.

"Has your view of Islam changed?"

"No, it hasn't changed at all. I grew up with Muslim people, so I was very acquainted with Islam. So it is not like the people who killed Danny taught me what Islam was about. They are hijackers of their own faith."

Was the Cairo speech relevant?
It seems like it would take someone familiar with the culture and language to get a feel for what the mood is - like a cia agent. My bet is that the protesters would want Obama to be more vocal - but again - who knows? I think Obama was just grandstanding in Cairo and doesn't want to deal with an actual situation.

Let's mind our own business
I was disappointed when the obnoxious and possibly dangerous Ahmadinejad was declared the winner of the Iranian election. Nonetheless, I am not in favor of our President or our nation choosing sides and meddling in Iranian affairs. Jonah Goldberg (who I agre with on some other issues) complains that Pres. Obama has chosen"not to choose". But guess what. It's not our business to "choose" who gets elected president of Iran or how that country should be run.... any more than it is Iranians', or other foreigners', business to "choose" who gets elected in the U.S. or how we run our country.

Some things to keep in mind: First, we do not know, and probably never will know, who really "won" the Iran election. I don't doubt there was a lot of fraud and vote-rigging and that Ahmadinejad's vote total was inflated. But he still may have genuinely won majority support from the Iranians. Protesters in the sreets don't necessarily represent the Iranian majority, any more than left-wing protesters after the election of Reagan or GW Bush were a more accurate reflection of majority opinion than the polls.

Second, our "support" could well be the kiss of death for the people we are supporting, by making them look like traitors and American puppets to other Iranians, and by giving the government more excuse to crack down violently on them.

Finally and most important, not only to we not have the duty or the right to meddle all over the world promoting our own idea of democracy, we obviously do not have the power. Our military, economic and diplomatic resources are near exhaustion, thanks in part to our previous nation-building,democracy-spreading crusade in Iraq. The last thing we need is another war, which seems to be the end goal of many who demand "courage" over Iran.

WRH Bill .. Is it a regional change?
It's a tough call. I'm an isolationist at heart and think other nations need to step up - especially on the other side of the planet. But this might be a real opportunity - what if Iraq and Iran both have free elections?

The France analogy
Joel De Oppresso Liber posted in part:
"So, back them up! If a people show that they are willing to fight for their freedom, let's help them! Or do you think that France should not have helped us win our Revolutionary War against England?"

As a history buff, I find a couple of ironic things about your France in our Revolution analogy. One is, while there were a few French pro-democracy idealists like Lafayette, the French royal government intervened in the war for strictly self-interested motives, because they thought the American revolt would weaken their rival England and so make France stronger. At this point, we need to be at least as self-interested, and act only if we are absolutely certain it will benefit our own country, the U.S.A.-- not out of some fuzzy-minded dream of world democracy.

Secondly, and most ironically, the French royalists turned out to be wrong about what was in their interest. Historians generally agree that the cost of aiding our Revolution and making war against England, helped to bankrupt the French government, and the economic collapse led to the French Revolution-- and the executiion of the king who had helped America. If the Iranians can make themselves freer by their own efforts, fine.... but I'd rather we didn't bankrupt ourselves (if we're not already there) trying to help them.

Superb peroration Jonah
What happened to the Democrats? It's complex, but somewhere in the past several decades they became enmeshed in moral relativism, convinced that post-modernism is the only absolute.

That led their infatuation with dictators, from Stalin to Chavez, and to their studied--read resilient--moral ambivalence when it comes to toppling those dictators.

Which is why they never saw the connection between a fledgling democracy in Iraq and the possibility, however small, of it migrating to the likes of Iran (Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia were more likely).

What does Barry have to lose by speaking out? Why doesn't he?

He has the opportunity to literally change the world.

Instead....., he busies himself with a 3 trillion + government Health Care Program and firing an Americorp Inspector General who tried to root out corruption.I guess that's because the one being accused of malfeasance was Barry's buddy. This took precedence over Iran.

Will "Pay-Go" Really Pay?
With his first two federal budgets projecting the largest deficits in U.S. history, each above a trillion dollars, Mr. Obama wants to be seen speaking the gospel of fiscal discipline and distancing himself from the free-spending ways of Congress, of which he was a member for four years.

With his first two federal budgets projecting the largest deficits in U.S. history, each above a trillion dollars, Mr. Obama wants to be seen speaking the gospel of fiscal discipline and distancing himself from the free-spending ways of Congress, of which he was a member for four years.

“Paying for what you spend is basic common sense. Perhaps that's why, here in Washington, it's been so elusive,” he needled an audience in the East Room this afternoon that included some House members.

But briefing reporters, White House Budget Director Peter Orszag conceded some of PAYGO’s limitations. It doesn’t cover discretionary spending.

“PAYGO only applies to the mandatory side of the budget and to revenue,” said Orszag. That means entitlement programs such as Medicare and revenue programs like taxes. It’ll cover the compulsory health care plan the president wants Congress to pass – but over five or 10 years. In a single year, the plan may exceed PAYGO limits.

It will not covered the "public option" of Obama Care.

In addition, about 40 percent of the federal budget, programs for education, energy, the military, etc., would not be covered by PAYGO, said Orszag. A different set of Senate and House rules apply to those programs, he said.

Channeling Hannan

It doesn't matter who won?
Obama said it really didn't matter much whether Ahmadinejad or Mousavi won. YES IT DOES. What about the rule of law? What about the principals of democracy? What about the will of the people? What about winning an election versus stealing one? In these very important ways it does matter. Obama's statement shows a blatant disregard for any sense of morals or principals.

Mr Kissinger
I just watch Henry Kissinger on Greta Van Susteren's show.

Kissinger said that Obama has it about right. Any candidate he supports will lose support among the Iranian people. So all he can really do is express support for the democratic process.

Bomb throwers like Goldberg rarely have anything constructive to add.

STAY OUT OF IT!
This screed is truly one of the worst (and angry) columns ever published here.

Here's the thing Mr. Goldberg: If the goal is to overturn this fraudulent election and not to protect a principle as you advocate, then President Obama should follow the advice of all but a handful of Iranian analysts and the pleas from the Iranian opposition. That advice is as follows: STAY OUT OF IT!

The only request coming from the opposition is for the US to not acknowledge the validity of the "vote" as some other countries have. That's it. That's all they want from us.

The protesters don't need our help and don't want our help.

As for the anger...Does Mr. Goldberg get this worked up over the plight of the people in Darfur? If not, why not?

Mr. Goldberg is simply concerned about opposing the President. He could care less about the Iranians.

another example...
of obama skipping the hard choices by voting "present."

Herman in IL
Herman, you asked, "When did Obama say he would side with Moslems over Christians? Obama is not my favorite person but he wouldn't be crazy enough to say that (even if he wanted to). And even the fawning media would stand up to him on this issue."

Well, here 'tis...

‘I will stand with the (Muslims) should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.’ Quote by Obama: From Audacity of Hope. p 261

Also, Herman, I notice you are all lathered up about any support for Israel. Herman, might your last name be "GOERING, Jr."???
