Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Some days you have to ask yourself, my God, what if these people were Republicans?

Democrats took back Congress in 2006 and the presidency in 2008 in no small part because of their ability to bang their spoons on their high chairs about what they called the Republican "culture of corruption." Their choreographed outrage was coordinated with the precision of a North Korean missile-launch pageant. And, to be fair, they had a point. The GOP did have its legitimate embarrassments. California Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham and lobbyist Jack Abramoff were fair game, and so was Rep. Mark Foley, the twisted Florida congressman who allegedly wanted male congressional pages cleaned and perfumed and brought to his tent, as it were.

Of course, it wasn't as if Democrats were without sin. Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson was indicted on fraud, bribery and corruption charges in 2007, after an investigation unearthed, among other things, $90,000 in his freezer. Then-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was busted in a prostitution scandal.

But that's all yesterday's news. Let's look at the here and now. Barack Obama, who vowed he'd provide a transparent administration staffed with disinterested public servants with the self-restraint of Roman castrati, appointed an admitted tax cheat to run the Treasury Department -- and he's hardly the only one in the administration.

New York Rep. Charles Rangel, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, is under investigation for, among other things, failing to report income from his Caribbean villa. Meanwhile, Sen. Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, got sweetheart deals from subprime lender Countrywide and has yet to adequately explain his too-good-to-be-true deal on his million-dollar "cottage" in Ireland, which he may have gotten in exchange for finagling a pardon (from President Clinton) for a felon. Oh, Dodd also secretly protected those AIG bonuses that raised such a ruckus.

Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania, Nancy Pelosi's moral authority on military matters during the Iraq war, has been revealed as a kleptomaniac of sorts, delivering as much of the federal budget as possible to various cronies and lobbyists.

Former Sen. John Edwards, who had an affair even as he was scoring Oprah-points as the supportive husband during his wife's battle with breast cancer, is being investigated by the feds for the improper use of campaign funds. It looks like the silky-haired champion of the little guys may have used their donations to bribe the alleged "baby mama" into silence.

And it would be a shame to let it pass that Obama's Senate seat was put up for sale by the then-governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich. A congressional ethics board is investigating whether Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. tried to buy it.

But you know what? We ain't seen nothing yet. For starters, the real corruption isn't what the media are ignoring or downplaying as isolated incidents. It's what the media are hailing as strokes of bold, inspirational leadership. The White House, as a matter of policy, is rewriting legal contracts, picking winners (mostly labor unions and mortgage defaulters) and singling out losers (evil "speculators"), while much of the media continue to ponder whether Obama is already a greater president than FDR.

If a Republican administration, staffed with cronies from Goldman Sachs and Citibank, was cutting special deals for its political allies, I suspect we'd be hearing fewer FDR analogies and more nouns ending with the suffix "gate."

Take Obama's "car czar," Steven Rattner. According to ABC's Jake Tapper, Rattner is accused of threatening to use the White House to smear a Chrysler creditor if it refused to back the administration's Chrysler bankruptcy plan. He's also connected to a massive pension fund scandal involving the investment firm he used to run. One allegation is that conspirators used investments in the low-budget movie "Chooch" to expedite their alleged chicanery. Chooch, by the way, is Italian slang for "jackass," which just happens to be the Democrats' mascot.

More to the point, political corruption is inevitable whenever you give hacks -- of either party -- too much discretion over public funds. Businesses look to Washington for profits instead of to the market. The thing is, this has become the governing philosophy of the Democratic Party, from banking and cars to health care and now student loans. The federal government is taking over, and the culture of corruption inevitably trickles down. That in itself should be a scandal. Call it "Choochgate."

Pundit Puffery
I sure think that our pundits got fat, happy, and self important. Hungrier journalists would be revealing the particulars of the quid pro quo lobbying scandal involving 50 democrats. That could be a game changer but it is being supressed. Instead we get relativist fluff.

TRICKLE DOWN DISASTER
is more like it. Click my name scroll down and read my piece: Trickle Down Disaster

One of your best Mr. Goldberg!
And it is very difficult to read without becoming more P.O.ed than I already am!

I think that my anger is really for my "Fellow Americans" who chanted "YES WE CAN" all the way to the polls to cast their vote for "HOPE and CHANGE."

Well...,they're getting it aren't they? Of course the rest of us are getting it right along with them.

What no poll will ever tell you is..., Barry Dunham's continued approval ratings are because every person who voted for him is dumber than a sack of hammers,(my apologies to the hammers).

Above the law....
Like media is going to expose the corruption. When GE owns NBC, is a huge campaign contributor, stands to gain billions in sales and subsidies from making wind turbines and solar panels... Heck, Immelt is Obama's energy advisor. Havn't heard any investigation into GE Medical Systems & Healthcare involvement with Medicare or other govt contracts. No one's looking.

There's a reason that there are legions of lobbyists pushing for nationalized healthcare and cap and trade. Those who directly benefit from these massive governments cash cows are again pushing for fast track passage. How did that transparent, but unread, omnibus spending bill work for everyone?

I'd love to see every single member of Congress audited. Wouldn't it be nice if the Federal Reserve were audited?!?! If those found in violation of existing tax law were to be removed from office, stripped of their pensions and perks, and permanently barred from lobbying after their departure, things might change a bit. Will never happen. Turbo Tim, instead, announced the hiring of 800 new IRS agents to go after American corporations doing business overseas. That really inspires confidence!

Until we the people vote these crooks, scammers, and incompetents, out, there will be only more of the same.

Entire Gov't is Corrupt
Until We The People wake up and stop the corruption , nothing will ever change. It is time for a complete change in Washington. It is time for Term Limits, no more not paying SS , no more of the same benefits they get if they only serve 1 term.Thats is stealing from We The People who pay the bills. No more paying of Nancy P's air protect , this is total waste of American Dollars . What give's her the rights to be better than the rest of the American's.The People are tired of the Gov't waste being given to Lobby and Special Interest Groups. The American People DO NOT OWE a Penny to the UNIONS. The UNIONS are nothing but theifs that sit on their assests and dictate to workers what they have to do. This is a RIGHT TO WORK COUNTRY.The UNIONS are a bunch of WORTHLESS PR_CKS that scam American's. America it is time for WE THE PEOPLE to take charge of OUR FUTURE and make changes in Washington and go back to the real America that made this Country Strong and to get back our HONOR and PRIDE again.

At Least Someone Can See
Thanks for a great article. However, I must respectfully disagree with your trickle down theory. Politicians tell the same lies to same people, over and over, and they believe them. Education is broke. Medicare is broke. Social Security is broke. The Children are broke. Then they proceed to come up with 1,001 ways to tax the American people to fix the broken things. No it's not trickle down, it is the Culture of Corruption period. And, the Vote is not going to change that. It is all about the "Benjamins" because they all become Multi-Millionaires, while taxing the American People to death for good intentions.

Joonah,Jonah.Don't you know that as a dem the bigger the law breaker the better the dems like them

Bingo!! That's a direct hit. So-called journalists today see themselves as 'players' helping to shape policy, rather than chroniclers of current events. Instead of simply reporting on a story, they all too frequently use their soapbox to advance an ideological agenda. Many probably believe that they are 'fighting the good fight' for one oppressed group or another, but when they adopt such attitudes they cease being journalists, and become ideological advocates.
Never the twain will meet.

IS OBAMA DESTINED FOR GREATNESS?
Is Barack Obama destined to be a transformational president-a blessing to America and world history-or will he end his presidency in failure and defeat one of fortune's tragic fools? For the answer click ApolloSpeaks.

Obama Promised ...
He promised he was going to make a chance in the standards of good government. He did ... he lowered them.

Oh no, you are all wrong there. What amazes me
about Goldbergs list is that it is all cockeyed.
Everyone knows that the Democrats will still
your wife and the Republicans will steal your
bank account.

And It seems like he is trying to turn everything around. Except that no one can
accuse Foley of stealing the wife.

He has already achieved greatness. And it looks so good on him. He wears it so well.

The saying is
Don't try to pick out the sliver in my eye when there's a log in your eye.

In this case your log is a 200 year old giant redwood.

For my take, it's not that I dispute the particular issues presented against those Dems, it's that the list excludes a giant swath of Republicans.

Yuh'all forgot Craig, Stevens, Lott and Delay for starters.

What about the Abramoff and Rove connections.

The list is endless against Republicans and you will find an endless list of the truth and perceptions about Dems.

There are always bad apples. The hope we have right now is that cronyism is on the ebb and being held accountable is on the rise.

I'll let you know what I think of that after I know what happens to Luis Calderon.

correction:
It is Louis Caldera that I refer to.

Rick, you’ve confirmed Goldberg’s point. Lott was removed, Craig was removed, Delay was removed. If these people that Goldberg mentioned were Republicans the media would never have allowed them to be appointed. One of the only moral standards that Democrats have set for themselves is that it is “patriotic to pay taxes.” Do you not find it just a little hypocritical that Obama has appointed the majority of his cabinet with tax evaders? Timothy Geithner was given money by his company to pay his back taxes … and he STILL didn’t pay them. He didn’t pay his delinquent taxes until he was appointed by Obama to the Treasury. Now he’s in charge of telling us that we need to pay our taxes! Do you really not see the inconsistency in all of this? Obama has just added people to the IRS to find tax evaders out of the country. Don’t you think he should look a little closer to home … like the seat next to him in his daily meetings?
