Mixing Politics and Bonuses Doesn't Pay

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Hats off to Larry Summers. The president's chief economic advisor told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on Sunday that there's nothing to be done about the fact that American International Group is contractually obliged to pay millions of dollars in bonuses to thousands of employees, some of whom helped ruin their company -- and, to some extent, the national economy. "We are a country of law; there are contracts. The government cannot just abrogate contracts."

From what I can tell, the bonuses do stink -- although some are as small as $1,000 and presumably go to people who had no significant part in the credit-default-swap-derivative mania of recent years. But let's assume that they're all gratuitous. Summers was still right.

When the federal government, on behalf of taxpayers, opted to essentially nationalize AIG -- we now own 80 percent of the company -- we made a choice to keep it alive. If the firm had gone out of business through bankruptcy -- what the gods wanted in the first place -- there would be no bonuses. But we chose not to do that. Which means those bonuses are just one more toxic debt for which we are on the hook. For good or ill, we chose to defy the natural order. And now we own this monstrous white elephant.

Here's a good rule of thumb: When you buy an elephant, you can't refuse to buy the manure that comes with it. You can try, but, soon enough, you'll be knee-deep in problems anyway. And they'll continue to pile up no matter how loudly you complain, "This isn't what I paid for."

Unfortunately, it looks like Summers is fighting a losing battle.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is getting set to churn out subpoenas to investigate the bonuses. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) demanded that AIG Chief Executive Edward Liddy, who came aboard after these contracts were signed and the company imploded, resign. Somehow I doubt that would make hiring a new caretaker any easier.

Meanwhile, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) wants to fire anyone who takes the bonuses. "These people may have a right to their bonuses. They don't have a right to their jobs forever," Frank said on NBC's "Today" show Monday. "Forget about the legal matter here for a second. These bonuses are going to people who screwed this thing up enormously, who made terrible decisions."

One wonders, given that logic, why Frank is accepting a congressional pay raise considering his role in the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac debacle.

Later on Monday, President Obama caved to the populist chorus. He said he asked Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who also helped oversee the mess we're in, to "pursue every single legal avenue to block these bonuses and make the American taxpayers whole." Obama said all Americans ask "is that everyone, from Main Street to Wall Street to Washington, play by the same rules. That is an ethic that we have to demand."

Again, an interesting standard given how many tax cheats Obama has invited into his administration, starting with our supposedly indispensable Treasury secretary.

Still, hypocrisy aside, Obama is right that everyone should play by the same rules, and that's called the rule of law, as Summers suggested.

We should have learned from the government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac what dangers lie ahead: The rule of law and political manipulation of the economy don't mix well (Indeed, AIG's toxic loans were made with considerable regulatory and political oversight). Liddy -- the front-line sweeper behind the AIG elephant -- has already warned the administration that letting politics dictate salaries and bonuses will make it difficult for the firm to retain talented staff.

But the unintended consequences surely won't end there. What signal does it send when the president and Congress make it clear that they will revisit legal contracts that run afoul of populist outrage? Already, many banks that have received bailout money are returning it -- or trying to -- because the political strings attached hinder them against competitors. Worse, the highly politicized climate requires financial firms to become dependent on the whims of Washington, which can't help thaw out frozen credit markets, particularly when Geithner has yet to explain what his actual policy will be.

Wells Fargo Chairman Richard Kovacevich, who was forced against his better judgment to take TARP funds, is livid with the Treasury secretary. "Is this America," he asks, "when you do what your government asks you to do and then retroactively you also have additional conditions?"

The New York Times reports that the administration is worried about a coming "populist backlash." It's right to be worried. But further blurring the lines between politics and the market isn't the answer. That's how we got in this mess in the first place.

Hypocrites !!!
Senator Barack Obama received a $101,332 bonus from American International Group in the form of political contributions according to Opensecrets.org. The two biggest Congressional recipients of bonuses from the A.I.G. are - Senators Chris Dodd and Senator Barack Obama.

CALLING ALL PATRIOTS
Yesterday I sent - vis certified / registered mail - a copy of Dr. Orly Taitz's law suit demanding that a special prosecutor be appointed to investigate Obama's BC issue as well as the many illegal and criminal activiites engaged in by his thug supporters.

Today I called the Office of the Attorney Genreal - Eric Holder - and left a voice message demanding the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Am I a little scared? Yes. Why? Because Obaman and his minions are ruthless thugs who kill fetuses, harvest brain-cell stems from fetuses, attack private citizens like Joe the Plumber and Rush Limbaugh to name just two... and they LIE.

But the above reasons - among others - is why I want to take on Obama ...

I do not want to live in a nation where the POTUS - especially a fake one - can declare open hunting season on American citizens any time for any reason.

I beleive Obama is NOT a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN of the United States, and is therefore NOT qualified to be POTUS - he is a usurper and an imposter.

If you would like to get in the fight to Preserve, Protect, and Defend the Constittion of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic ...

The AIG that laid the chickens.
Chickens who did not have enough gumption to ask before voting to give the money. Ask who is watching the store?

Every one of our leaders is smeared with this manure pile. Americans are finally getting a little sunshine on this group of self serving fearless leaders.

Good Article.

The Usual Suspects
"The two biggest Congressional recipients of bonuses from the A.I.G. are - Senators Chris Dodd and Senator Barack Obama."

Remember how they were also the two biggest recipients, along with Frank, of Fannies and Freddie 'campaign contributions'?

Given the context in which these 'contributions' were given, considering that Fannie and Freddie were run by leftist slush fund managers, Raines and Gorelick, who parachuted out with hundreds of millions, might these be considered 'bribes' or graft.

We are witnessing criminality on a monumental scale and no one dare call it for what it is.

Shapiro
Don't bet the rent money that something can't
be done about those bonuses. You have a vested
interest in the bonuses going forward. If they
do, people will be angry at Obama. If he finds
away to stop them, they will love him.

In your heart of hearts, you are PRAYING the
bonuses will go through.

Frank is the poster boy for the mess
Frank said on NBC's "Today" show Monday. "Forget about the legal matter here for a second. These bonuses are going to people who screwed this thing up enormously, who made terrible decisions."

Using his logic and outrage he, Dodd, Reid, Freak-bag Pelosi and the arrogant puppet with the big ears leading this circus should all be fired and put in jail. Enough of amatuer hour get rid of all of these punks.

Buy Out Their Contracts
Perhaps the American people could give a separation bonus to President Obama after he signed a binding contract to just go away. The same for Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Then we could move on to Pelosi and Reid.

These officials are the most inept in my lifetime and it would be worth it if we could rid ourselves of their stupidity, no matter what the cost!

Barney is confused
"They don't have a right to their jobs forever," Frank said....."

I'm confused, I thought democrats understood that a job was yours forever once you'd been hired. The union folks aren't going to like hearing this "you don't have a right to your job forever" stuff coming from Barney's mouth.

Be nice to see some humility from Dodd and Frank and other democrats for their culpability in this entire debacle. Yeah, hold your breath....

Socialist America
"We" are now getting what "we" voted for and support, the communistic "progressives" in the Democrat Party and their cowardly "conservative" allies who refuse to stand up for and promote Capitalism with their weak "I told you so's" after saying NOTHING during 8 years of the drunken frat boy spending our money like daddy's trust fund.

We had the perfect opportunity this past year to get rid of these clowns. Now we will get the "change" we so richly deserve for not staying faithful to the principles of our Nation. Have fun Comrades.

Made whole?
The idea that taking money back from people are legally entitled to it is going to "make the taxpayers whole" is nonsense! I was listening to Rush Limbaugh yesterday and he said it best; if the government takes those bonuses back, are any of us going to be able to check our wallets and find any of the money there? Is there going to be a check sent out to us in the amount that we are "entitled" to that can make us "whole"? Stealing their legally obtained money won't help any of us one bit, because you know the G doesn't give a damn about relieving the taxpayers. Stealing that money would just give them more of our money to waste elsewhere.

now, now, Hoss...
those weren't union jobs. if they'd had the benefit of 'card check', then all those paper shufflers' jobs would have been as safe and sacrosanct as any birthright.

Red Herring
The real intent of the bonus issue is that the major banks are giving the funds to offshore banks. AIG really used a small percentage of the funds for US taxpay assistance. Just like all Obama's plans, big guys get the gold and little guys get the shaft. Look at what he is trying to do the the Veterans now.

Georgann
Do you understand how contracts work my friend? If AIG thought those guys didn't merit the bonuses then they would not have put them in contract regardless of the outcome of the company. We see this in professional sports all the time - guaranteed contracts regarless of outcome. What is really at stake here is the peoples right to keep what is theirs without the government picking our pockets further.

Apparently
liberals do not understand how contracts work. Well have someone renege on one of your contracts, and maybe you will learn. Realize that there a lot of contracts that you aren't aware of. Your mortgage is a contract. Your employment is a contract. So what would happen if those were reneged? What would happen if your employer decided not to pay your wages? Or your lender just wiped your fixed rate off of the table arbitrarily? Bet you would be ticked and run to court.

BTW...this is not new. Punitive taxes have already been tried and the SCOTUS has ruled a big fat no-no on it. Anyone who thinks punitive taxation is good I suggest then you don't tick off the government lest you be punitively punished.

The populism in this country has gone to mob rule, which isn't rational, but then again neither is populism.

hail to the chief
Gee, I am surprised that the Chosen One has asked his Secty to explore every legal option to negate the bonuses. He is a Lawyer. The government has no right to negate a contract as bad as this is, it is still a binding contract. Sooooo, Mr. Messiah, eat ssoup, and shut up. Four years of this clown. Wow.

best column I've read on the subject.
As outrageous as bonuses for execs of failed companies is, this pales in comparison to the outrage government officials (including judges) voiding or rewriting legally binding contracts without due process.

Doesn't the fifth amendment have something to say about this?

"Forget about the legal matter here for a second." -- Barney Frank

I guess the 5th amendment is nullable whenever it is convenient for these swine.

WAKE UP!
If you are going to fire someone, how about firing the congressional legislators that started the whole thing and ignored the red flags brought to their attention since 1999.

This isn't just a "BUSH" deal it goes back to Clinton, Franks and Dodd in the late 90s. Wake up news media and start covering the news! Where is the reporting that should be uncovering this information. Why do we need to go online to get it. Oh, and if we can get it online, what's so hard about them doing the same thing?

Lower standards (sub-prime loans) legislated by corrupt politicians (Republicans and Democrats) equals world wide recession (you and me paying for it for the rest of our lives) while the politicos don't even have to vote for their raises any more. Just outrageous!!!

That's because they think that they are exempt from all rules, laws, etc. Also see the BF(ironic initials) quote about the legal thing.

FDR, OBAMA & AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM
Excerpt from FDR and Barack Obama: American Exceptionalism Verses the United States of Mankind

"Obamanomics is the New Deal without FDR, as Reaganomics was FDR without the New Deal. And the New Deal minus FDR = political failure. Obama is no FDR, he lacks FDR's optimistic temperament, irresistible charms, political skills and genius for war. Obama’s rhetorical powers are miniscule compared to FDR’s. FDR was adroit at raising public morale and sustaining it through difficult times. He projected the image of a father figure, a great benevolent parent, and made you feel that he loved you, cared for you, would provide for your needs and lead you out of danger. FDR didn’t just feel your pain like an empathetic Bill Clinton, he took it away as if he were an opiate.
