Dems Melt in Heat of Burris Fiasco

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The Democrats are folding like an ironing board over this Roland Burris business, and for some reason people are surprised.

Just to catch up: The governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, is in scalding-hot water over allegations he wanted to sell Barack Obama's still-warm Senate seat. This was discovered via federal wiretaps of the helmet-haired governor's phone conversations and fueled by some juicy dialogue better suited for fleet week in Manila.

In response, Senate Democrats took a Churchillian stand, vowing that no Blago appointee would ever be accepted by the Senate. No appointee, the Democrats insisted, so tainted with scandal could be allowed to sit in the same chamber that Ted Kennedy calls home.

The party of the infinitely elastic "living Constitution" suddenly planted their flag of principle in the terra firma of constitutional concrete and watched it flap in the hot wind of their political bloviation. Even after Blagojevich announced he was appointing Roland Burris, a respected but unremarkable black Illinois politician, to Obama's seat, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada stood his ground, pronouncing the move "unacceptable."

But that resolve melted like a Hershey bar in a Nevada parking lot the moment Mr. Burris came to Washington. Apparently, the Constitution wasn't on the Democrats' side (Fancy that!) and liberals lacked the stomach to stand in the doorway of the Capitol and block admittance of a black man.

Indeed, that was Blago's thinking all along. When the Democratic governor announced his decision, he assembled various black Illinois pols to support the move, including Rep. Bobby Rush, a Democrat from Chicago's South Side and a founder of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party. Rush immediately played the race card at the press conference. "There are no African-Americans in the U.S. Senate. And I don't think any U.S. senator who's sitting in the Senate right now wants to go on record to deny one African-American from being seated in the U.S. Senate," he said.

In case you needed a ball-peen hammer to drive the point into your forehead, he added: "I would ask you to not hang or lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer ..."

Rush assembled more than 60 black ministers Sunday to rally around Burris at a Chicago church. "We are just faced with a hard-headed room of people in the Senate who want to keep an African-American out of the Senate," Rush said. He condemned the Senate, where until recently Barack Obama served before becoming president of the United States, as "the last bastion of plantation politics."

And that was all she wrote for Reid, who by next week should be on all fours like Kevin Bacon in "Animal House," shouting, "Thank you sir! May I have another?" as Burris paddles him.

Now, I certainly understand why Reid & Co. caved. For starters, Reid's not exactly the brightest crayon in the box.

But why all the fuss in the first place? Isn't this how it always works? The Atlantic's Ta-Nehisi Coates, an impressive African-American writer, is amazed that "Reid has been outmaneuvered by the sort of overt, hamfisted identity politics deployed in the '70s."

The '70s? So this sort of thing stopped more than three decades ago? I had no idea. What planet do my newscasts come from?

I thought this was simply what liberals and Democrats do. When Newt Gingrich introduced the Contract with America, black Democrats denounced it as racist. Charlie Rangel proclaimed, "Hitler wasn't even talking about doing these things." When impeachment threatened Bill Clinton, he draped himself in black ministers and staffers. The NAACP ran an ad narrated by the daughter of James Byrd, a black man brutally murdered in a hate crime, insinuating that then-presidential candidate George W. Bush's refusal to support hate-crime legislation in Texas was like murdering her father again. In the recent campaign, nearly the entire liberal punditocracy insisted that opposition to Barack Obama could only be explained by racism, a story line egged on by Obama himself when convenient.

And don't tell me Blago's corruption changes the equation. Has anyone read about the baleful history of minority set-aside programs in cities like Chicago? Cronies and grifters are routinely given sweetheart contracts under the guise of fighting discrimination when in reality it's all a riot of kickbacks, "pay-to-play" and cronyism. People don't call Jesse Jackson a shakedown artist for nothing.

There are two reasons why this spectacle shocks some liberals. The first is that Blago, Burris and Rush used this tactic on fellow Democrats. And since Democrats can't be motivated by racism, any ploy like this must be cynical. When the same gambit is used on Republicans, it's called "speaking truth to power." Second, some honestly believed that Obama represented a real change of the racial landscape. So far, alas, these folks just look naive.

Hypocrisy and corruption
The hypocrisy and corruption spreading from Illinois to Washington is monumental and blatant, but they get a pass since they are Liberals. I cannot count the number of stories the come across for review about this type of corruption in Washington.

Black (racism) is beautiful
No black person can be tainted by ANYTHING. How else to explain that BOs' list of close friends/mentors who are card carrying racists, marxists, traitors, etc. made not a mark on his 1600 Pennsylvania aspirations?

No wonder why jews vote for scum democrats like this by 10 to 1. It is obviously the "chutzpah" factor. Man, that Rush guy, what a set he's got, huh?

As usual -
Our Man, Jonah, knocks it out of the park! He's simply one of the best there is out there at cutting through the nonsense and telling it like it is - doesn't hurt that he's funny and just darned cute too! :)

Thanks, Jonah. I forwarded this one on to everyone I know!

Relish the Clowns
Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are the biggest clowns in Washington, D.C. In a year when Republicans lost a presidential election it is a small comfort that Congress is run by these two incompetent politicians and not by a Lyndon Johnson. We can count on Harry and Nancy for a few chuckles in what is probably going to be a disastrous Obama administration.

And just think...
...Reid is the smartest guy in Nevada!

Once again....
Well stated.

Irony
Isn't it ironic that all of the accusations against Reid by the blacks in Chicago are playing the race card? I thought all of the Obamabots voted for him to prove that America is not racist? Did anyone tell blacks that? They apparently voted for Obambi based on his skin color alone, and are still playing the race card at every opportunity. Frankly, I was surprised that Reid even tried to keep Burris out since Burris is black. But it seems Reid tried to dictate to Blago that he wanted a woman to be appointed to that seat. It's funny when Democrat identity politics blow up in their faces. How entertaining this has been. The Dems "discriminating" against a black man when they just helped elect an unqualified black man to the highest job in the land. Can't get any richer than this.

Tragedy and Comedy
Right on point again Jonah!

Our comedic relief over the next few years will be immense with these idiots and the idiot in chief acting like the Three Stooges go to Washington (which one is Curly?. The tragedy is that those of us that didn't vote for these morons will also be subjected to their corruption and lunacy. Hang on for a wild ride for the forseeable future.

Hard to Figure
As an American who is Jewish, it simply confounds me why any American of Jewish religion would ever vote for a liberal. particularly these versions of liberals.
These versions, support, people who want to destroy Israel. Announced it, swear by it and maintain the willing desire to destroy Israel.

In the fall election, there were 300 Jews who publicly announced through the Jewish Light in St. Louis they support Obambi, who would in one heartbeat abandon Israel and allow its destruction.

Yet, they did and when challenged in the paper, NOT ONE Jew answered me....
Makes no sense.

And I am a Jew with the same last name as Jonas!!!!

Great Article - and Entertaining also
Jonah, you must be the master of the simile and metaphor in opinion journalism. You seem to have an endless supply of them, almost every article has a couple original examples: But that resolve melted like a Hershey bar in a Nevada parking; who by next week should be on all fours like Kevin Bacon in "Animal House," shouting, "Thank you sir! May I have another?"

You churn out pithy similes like a Land-o-Lakes factory on steroids - see that one is not as good as one of yours. Or - the Dems demonstated about as much backbone as a carton of fish bait. That one is better.

That ability is truly a gift. I admire that.

Trust Democrats
to make a banana republic seem competent in comparison.

Anyone Shocked?
I don't think a lot of people are shocked by the senate going to seat Burris. By law they have to and all that grandstanding they did saying they wouldn't seat anyone appointed by Blago was just a smokescreen to try to reel in people to think they were doing the right thing. They don't want to take a chance on a special election so a possible Republican could get in there anyways. So they go thru all the bogus condemnation of this appointment knowing full well they were going to seat him in the end because, by law, they have no grounds not to. Burris says he has never played the race card and why would he have to as there are to many other willing participants to do it for him. Blago is a nut but he played this one right. Checkmate.

Buy Liberal Fascism
Our government for the next four years reminds me of the Simpsons episode that parodied "Lord of the Flies."
A bunch of lost children that set up their own government that is laugh out loud funny.
For the first time in my adult life, I am embarrassed of my president-elect.

Dirty Harry Reid

either has not read the Constitution, or if he has, he doesn't understand it.

Susan
You are absolutely correct. Why should we be surprised at Democrats playing the race card, when we suspect that our state's governor will likely put Princess Caroline into the seat that would be vacated by the celebrity occupant. Unfortunately, we are entering a live performance of "Lord of the Flies" without the benefit of being able to walk out of the theater. 2010 can't come soon enough.

Dems are not melting at all
Once Franken is seated, they will have 59 Senate votes. All is good.

This is fun
Watching Democrats hurl charges of racism and sexism at each other than at Republicans. Bobby Rush fabricating a charge of racism in the same way Obama did against McCain in the campaign. Blagojevich showing his party how hard-ball politics is really played. He did finally use the open Senate seat for personal gain, turning the tables on his accusers and eroding their standing on the moral high ground.

Democrats said they were going to end the culture of corruption but instead they just put it under new management.

Chloe
Yeah right. The 'Chosen One'© has not yet beed sworn in to office and there is already discord in the Democrats ranks.

Oh it's gonna' be fun the next sevaral years watching the Democrat circular firing squad.

And Franken is a not-so-funny commedian. I hope his sthick plays better in the senate then when he was on AirUmAmerica©

Democrats And The Race Issue
Republicans have always been painted as the racists by the left. It was a plan and it has wot=rked. We hear it every day.

However,it is the left who see color in every act and deed. They use race to buy votes and keep minorities under their thumb.

The Republicans believe in self-reliance and a color blind society. That everyone is on the same playing field and they need a hand up and not a hand out.

Crime Is Everywhere.
It is well known among keen observers of human nature that people will compromise their morals if a strong enough temptation is displayed. How can a hard working businessman like Madoff or a once honest politician like Blagojevich be expected to withstand the mind bending forces of temptation. Understanding people should give those who have yielded to strong temptations a second chance and the opportunity to start their lives over again.

For a rightwinger whose party has no black support, you sound quite sarcastic. Keep it up, wilderness guy.

Simply
Jonah Goldberg: the best writer on Townhall. Not nearly the intellectual heft of a George Will or Walter Williams (and I mean this not as a slap to Goldberg but W & W are genius) but by far the craftiest wordsmith. Keep up the good work Jonah!

And yes, as someone posted above, if you haven't bought Jonah's book Liberal Fascism, you should.

I also wonder why:

Only 31% of Democrats support Israel and Jews generally vote for them.

Jews were disarmed and almost exterminated in Nazi Germany, and Jews generally support gun control.

Jews are astute business persons and generally vote for government monopoly welfare.

Jews are a frequently oppressed minority but they generally support the recently popular concept of a democracy (mob rule) over the constitutional republic (government of laws) mandated in Article 4, Section 4.

Jews have a rich heritage but support government monopoly indoctrination of their children over the freedom of choice offered by vouchers.

Jews are bright, but they somehow perceive a distinction between left wing tyrants like Stalin and right wing tyrants like Hitler.

I suggest you have no understanding why blacks vote democrat. Millions are undereducated and are led by the belief that the democrats will up the welfare ante. Nothing like living off the dole to get one to vote for more dole.

I bet you think our country is a democracy? It will be a dictatorship pretty soon. The tipping point will come when the majority of voters draw their sustenance the government. It was 47% in the last Presidential election cycle. I bet it passed the 50%mark this time. There goes the Republic!

If you believe that everyone is on the same
